Jharkhand: Medical student found brutally murdered in Patratu dam, netizens demand #JusticeForPujaBharti

0

On Tuesday, the Jharkhand police recovered the body of a 22-year-old medical student named Puja Bharti Purve from Patratu Dam near Ranchi. The incident has triggered a social media outrage, prompting netizens to demand justice and fair investigation from Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren. She was a resident of Godda and a student at the Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College in Hazaribagh.

The autopsy, conducted under the supervision of a three-member medical board, has confirmed that Puja died due to drowning. During the post-mortem, the doctors did not find injury marks on her body or private parts. The police have sent the victim’s undergarments, vaginal swab, nail clippers, ropes and other items to the State Forensic Science Laboratory (SFL) to probe the angle of rape, as per a report in Jagran.

As per the CCTV footages and police investigation so far, Puja left her home in a normal condition and did not return even after 6 pm on Tuesday, when the main gate is closed. She had boarded an AC bus from Hazaribagh and arrived in Ranchi, although the bus driver failed to identify the exact location where he dropped her. The victim’s body was recovered from the dam, with her hands and legs tied up.

Police investigation and the curious case of ‘second phone’

Reportedly, the victim had a second phone, which has been missing ever since the incident. The investigating team is of the view that the phone would help solve the mystery in the case. As such, the cops are scanning the ‘call drop’ records in the area, where Puja was found dead.

The case is being investigated by 17 teams from 3 districts, namely, Hazaribagh, Ranchi and Ramgarh. The police is also investigating the footage from CCTV cameras, located in Buti More and Kanke Road. Deputy Inspector General of Police (Hazaribagh) AV Homkar has been supervising the probe in the case. On Wednesday, he visited the medical college and interrogated the Principal and others.

The Patratu police station has lodged a case of murder against unidentified people. On Wednesday, SDPO (Patratu) Prakash Chandra Mahato reached the crime scene for further examination. At the same time, divers were sent underwater to find crucial evidence in connection to the case. The police is also scanning CCTV footage of hotels, in the vicinity of dam, besides Patratu Lake Resort.

Netizens demand #JusticeForPujaBharti

After the news of the Puja Bharti’s murder came to light, netizens took to social media to demand justice for the victim. A user wrote, “A medical student raped and murdered brutally. The government should need to take strict action against this case. RIP puja bharti.” It must be clarified that the rape angle has not been established as of yet.

“Due to some criminal mindset, our daughters, sisters are being murdered and raped ,such ill mentality people should be hanged. Justice for puja Bharti, Hazaribagh medical student who is brutally murdered and drowned alive,” another user wrote.

“What is happening in this country? I am speechless. This is very cruel. We want justice for puja bharti,” tweeted another user.

Many social media users pointed out that the Jharkhand police have not been able to apprehend the accused, even after three days of the recovery of the victim’s body.

Parliamentary panel on IT to summon Facebook, Twitter over data safety, banning accounts

The Parliamentary Panel on Information Technology, headed by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor will summon social media giants Facebook and Twitter over data sharing of users, alleged political interference and the changes in their privacy policy. As per reports, the standing committee has decided to summon social media giants Facebook and Twitter t explain their conduct in the recent days, in banning user accounts and sudden changes in privacy policy.

The decision by social media giants to ‘ban’ outgoing US President Donald Trump immediately after the Capitol Hill incident had raised concerns and opposition from all over the world. While many left-leaning politicians ane media persons had welcomed it, many world leaders and experts had raised concerns over the political bias and subsequent political interference by the social media companies.

Worldwide, several policymakers have been raising concerns that while social media companies like Twitter and Facebook claim that they are an intermediary, and claim to believe in ‘freedom of expression’, they have been increasingly behaving like censor and publishers. Concerns have been raised that with their control and ‘watchful eyes’ over the opinions and information that significant populations in most countries share, these companies may misuse it for their own gain, bias and goals. Businessmen, politicians and policy experts all over the world had expressed concern over the behaviour by Facebook and Twitter.

In a significant recent development, the government of Uganda had banned the social media giants ahead of their presidential elections. German Chancellor Angela Merkel had voiced that she finds the ban on Trump ‘problematic’ because ‘freedom of expression’ cannot be determined by the bosses of online platforms.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who leans towards the Left himself, said, “How can you censor someone? Let’s see, I, as the judge of the Holy Inquisition, will punish you because I think what you’re saying is harmful? Where is the law, where is the regulation, what are the norms? This is an issue of government. This is not an issue for private companies.”

WhatsApp change in privacy policy

WhatsApp, owned by Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook had recently changed its privacy policy, stating that Facebook will have access to WhatsApp user data, a step that had raised objections and criticism over several quarters. WhatsApp’s update message had included that user accounts will be dysfunctional if they do not agree to the new policy by February 8, 20201. Several Indian politicians have also voiced concerns over social media companies having the power to manipulate, withhold information and ‘ban’ users, a power that is certain to have political ramifications.

As per reports, the panel will send official notices on this regard soon. Reports have stated that the panel members have unanimously agreed upon the concerns over Twitter playing the role of publisher and censor. However, a schedule for the panel’s meetings is yet to be decided.

0

In a bizarre incident in Sindh, Pakistan, a police station was reportedly ‘terrorised’ by a couple of pigs. Apparently, Pakistani cops had a tough time dealing with the unusual miscreants. According to reports, some pigs made Pakistani police personnel run for their lives as they barged into a police station.

Cops waited outside the police station

In an incident that reportedly happened on January 12, some stray pigs entered into the building of a police station in Moro city of Naushahro Feroze district of Sindh. The sudden entry of pigs made the cops present in the police station panic and run away. The cops reportedly could not muster the courage to enter the police station building till the pigs remained inside the police station and therefore waited outside the station building till the pigs were removed. It is notable here that pigs are considered ‘haram’ in Islam.

Police sought the help of locals to remove the pigs

One of the pigs was brought out of the police station as informed by the Station House Officer (SHO). However, the other pig continued to give a tough time to the cops. The police had to seek the help of locals to get rid of the pigs from the station building.

Rohingya problem in India

The Government of India has deemed Rohingyas, an ethnic community from Myanmar, a threat to national security in 2017. There were several reports of their links to terrorist outfits. The government has been trying to filter out and send them back to their native country. In December 2019, Home Minister Amit Shah had said that India would never accept Rohingya in any circumstances.

BBC airs ‘Death in Bollywood’ documentary which traces the controversial Jiah Khan death case

BBC Two has launched a three-episode documentary series on the mysterious death of late actress Jiah Khan who allegedly died by suicide in 2013. The first episode of the documentary titled Death in Bollywood was aired on Monday, the rest of the two episodes aired subsequently. The documentary reportedly includes the version of her death given by Aditya Pancholi, who is the father of Khan’s alleged boyfriend Sooraj Pancholi who is accused in her death case.

Jiah Khan, who was 25 at that time, was reportedly found hanging at her apartment in Mumbai in June 2013. She had left a lengthy suicide note running into 6 pages highlighting her strained relationship with Sooraj Pancholi.

Rejecting the suicide theory, Jiah’s mother Rabia Amin has been calling it a case of murder. She accused Sooraj Pancholi of murdering her daughter. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) initiated the investigation into her death in 2014. In 2016, the CBI had re-confirmed her death as suicide after investigation.

In January 2018, a Mumbai court had charged Sooraj Pancholi with abetting Jiah Khan’s suicide. However, the case has not yet been decided. Earlier this month, the CBI had reportedly said that a further investigation would be carried out in the Khan’s case. Responding to this, Panchol’s lawyer had sought action against the central agency for contempt of court as the matter was still being investigated.

Jiah Khan’s mother accused Salman Khan of influencing investigation

The case of Jiah Khan’s mysterious was death was raked up following the mysterious death of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput. After allegations of murder started emerging in Rajput’s purported suicide, Rabia Amin had drawn similarities between the death of Rajput and that of her daughter.

She accused Salman Khan of sabotaging the investigation in her daughter’s death case. She said that Rajput’s case reminded her of how the CBI told her that Salman Khan called them up and asked them not to harass Pancholi as he had invested a of money in him.

“What happened with Sushant, has reminded me of 2015 when I went to meet CBI officer who had called me down from London. He said please come, we have found some incriminating evidence. I land up over there and he says, ‘Oh, by the way, Salman khan calls me every day and says he has invested a lot of money, please don’t harass the boy, please don’t interrogate him, don’t touch him. So what can we do, madam’? He was annoyed, he looked frustrated”, Amin alleged.

Mahesh Bhatt asked me to keep quiet: Jiah’s mother

Last year in August, after the death of Sushant Singh Rajput, Rabia Khan has opened up about how film director had intimidated her during the funeral of her daughter. She alleged that Bhatt tried to convince her that her daughter was mentally depressed. She further alleged that Bhatt threatened her to keep mum or face death. Khan also said that Bhatt used to intimidate her daughter when she was just 16 and was working with him. She called Bhatt a mouthpiece of Bollywood mafia.

NCERT says it has no information on source of claim made in textbook that Mughals had rebuilt temples after destroying them

The NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) has said that it has no evidence to prove that Mughal emperors had rebuilt temples destroyed in wars, even when it claims the same in its history textbook. This was revealed in an RTI application seeking evidence for the claim made in the textbook.

The RTI application filed by one Shivank Verma had sought details regarding information in the book ‘Themes of Indian History (Part II)’ for class XII. On page 234 of the history textbook, it says, “All Mughal emperors gave grants to support the building and maintenance of places of worship. Even when temples were destroyed during war, grants were later issued for their repair – as we know from the reigns of Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb.”

Page 234 of the textbook Themes of Indian History (Part II)

The chapter labels the Mughal empire as “a unifying force”, quoting Abu’l Fazl, Mughal chronicler and author of Akbarnama. It mentions how Akbar had abolished the jizya, and people from various religions and ethnicities were given awards and positions in the Mughal empire. However, in the paragraph claiming that the Mughal rulers had rebuilt temples after demolishing them, no source is given.

Therefore, an application was filed under the Rights to Information Act seeking the evidence of the claim made in the NCERT textbook. The petitioner had sought two details, regarding the claim, first, the source from which NCERT concluded that Mughals had issued grants for rebuilding temples destroyed in war during the regime of Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb, and second, the number of temples repaired by Aurangzeb and Shah Jahan.

As reply to the petition, NCERT said that it does not have any information regarding the claim it made in the textbook. The reply to both the queries were “The information is not available on the files of the Department. The reply was furnished by professor Gouri Srivastava, head of the Department of Education in Social Sciences and also the Public Information Officer.

Nawab Malik, who had claimed that Arnab will commit suicide, faces embarrassment, son-in-law arrested in drugs case

Sameer Khan, the son-in-law of NCB leader and Maharashtra Minority Affairs and Skill Development Minister Nawab Malik, has been arrested by NCB in a drug case. Earlier in the day, he was summoned by the Narcotics Control Bureau to question him in connection with the case.

NCB has found an online monetary transition between Khan and one of the accused in the ongoing probe into the Bollywood-drug nexus. In this case, British national Karan Sajnani and two others were arrested with 200 kgs of banned drug last week. The other two persons arrested along with Sajnani were Rahila Furniturewala and her sister Shaista Furniturewala. Rahila Furniturewala is former manager of activist and film actress Dia Mirza.

The transaction took place on Google Pay between Sameer Khan and Karan Sajnani, which the NCB believes was a payment for drug purchase. Accordingly, he was issued summons to appear before the NCB on Wednesday. After detailed questioning, the NCB decided to put him under arrest.

On Tuesday, NCB had arrested one Ramkumar Tiwari in connection with the case, who is one of the owners of the famous Muchhad Panwal shop in South Mumbai, which is frequented by celebrities, businessmen and industrialists. NCB had found drugs in the warehouse of the paan shop.

Tiwaru was found dealing in drugs including ganja, imported contraband like ‘OG Kush’ (a strain of cannabis indica), and curated marijuana, some of which had been sourced from the US. Tiwari was granted bail on Wednesday by a city court on payment of bail amount of Rs 15,000.

It may be noted that in October last year, Maharashtra minister and NCP leader Nawab Malik had ‘predicted’ that Republic Editor Arnab Goswami will commit suicide after getting frustrated with numerous cases filed against him by the Maharashtra govt. In a sting operation, Malik had said about Arnab Goswami, “this man will have a lot of problems. I am scared that he will go into a zone himself. This is madness. It becomes a phobia. A phobia created after a point of time becomes paranoia.”

Ormanjhi beheading case: Police recover head of the victim, accused Shiekh Bilal still on the run

0

On January 12, Ranchi Police recovered the skull of a beheaded 22-year-old woman, the body of whom was found earlier. The police had recovered her headless dead body from a paddy field in Chandwey village. The head was recovered from the paddy field of the prime accused Shiekh Bilal. The skull was unearthed around 5 KMs away from the spot where police found the body.

Bilal lured Sophia to spend some quality time

The police found out that Bilal took Sophia on the pretext of spending time together. He took her to Parsagarh forest on January 2 where he killed her with a sharp-edged weapon. A few hours later, he reached home with her beheaded skull to hide the evidence. He asked his son to bring a digger and went to his farm in Chatwal village where he dug up a pit and buried the skull. He had added salt while burying the head so that it decomposes quickly.

Sophia’s brother Shamsher has identified and confirmed that the head was of his sister. Police have sent blood samples from both the body and head to the Forensic laboratory for DNA matching.

During the initial investigation, police found out that Bilal had killed Sophia, who was living with Bilal as his second wife. SSP has formed a special team to arrest him. The reports suggested that Bilal had recently come out of jail. The police have put up posters and asked for public assistance to arrest him.

Shabbo Khatoon, Bilal’s first wife, pointed out the location of the head

Bilal’s first wife, Shabbo Khatoon, was aware of the murder. However, she did not inform the police. The police detained her and questioned her on Monday after which she broke down and narrated the whole incident. She also pointed out the location where police could find the skull. Police have not yet arrested her formally.

The police suggested that there were several reasons why Bilal killed Sophia. It was Sophia who informed the Pithoria police about Bilal when he was arrested with a weapon. Secondly, she came to live with Bilal after leaving her first husband, Khalid. However, she was in contact with a third man. Lastly, Bilal wanted to get rid of Sophia.

In a fresh development, the Uttarakhand Police has announced a reward of Rs 1000 for providing information on the former Congress President Kishore Upadhyay’s sister-in-law Nazia Yusuf. Nazia is accused of committing fraud to the tunes of crores and is on the run since the last one year.

press release issued by Dehradun Police

The police issued a press release in which it announced the bounty of Rs 1000 for anyone who gets Nazia arrested or provides vital information to the Dehradun police leading to her arrest. Nazia, wife of Sachin Upadhyay, is charged with serious sections of fraud, the press release said.

“Case number 24/17, 420/467/468/471/120-B is filed against Mrs Nazia Yusuf, wife Mr Sachin Upadhyay, at Bhadwi police station, Rajpur district, Dehradun. The accused is absconding since 19 January 2020,” the official press release said.

The case filed against Nazia is related to the SIT investigation into the fraud committed by her husband Sachin Upadhyay. Sachin was arrested by the police last January. His wife, Nazia is listed as one of the co-accused in the case. She has been absconding since 17 January 2020. The police had launched a wide dragnet to arrest the culprit but when it failed in nabbing her, the ACJM-3 Vibhav Yadav court invoked Section 82 and declared her absconding.

OpIndia first reported the fraud case that led to the arrest of Nazia’s husband

The fraud case was first reported by OpIndia in October 2018, where the detail of the fraud committed by Upadhyay was published. Mukesh Joshi had alleged before the company law board that while he had given a loan of Rs 1.7 crore to the company to purchase land, Sachin Upadhyay didn’t contribute his share. When Mukesh was in hospital following a heart attack caused by financial loss due to Upadhyay’s non-cooperation, Sachin Upadhyay had converted the debt into equity shares, and had allotted the same to his wife, who was made a director of the company by himself. Upadhyay had also removed Mukesh Joshi as director of the company on the same day his wife as appointed.

A case has been registered against Upadhyay under sections 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 467 (Forgery of valuable security, will, etc), 468 (Forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (Using as genuine a forged 1[document or electronic record].), 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace.) and 120b (criminal conspiracy) of Indian Penal Code 1860 in Rajpur police station of Dehradun in the year 2017.

Subsequently, Senior Uttarakhand Congress leader Kishor Upadhyay’s brother Sachin Upadhyay was arrested in Dehradoon last year in connection with the fraud case. He was arrested on the basis of an SIT formed to probe the charges against him.
