Chingari, Indian alternative to TikTok, gains momentum amidst calls to boycott Chinese products

Amidst calls to boycott Chinese products in the wake of India-China standoff at the border, a homegrown app named Chingari had reportedly been gaining momentum in the Indian digital space. Hailed as an alternative to Chinese TikTok, Chingari was developed by Sumit Ghosh, Biswatma Nayak, and Siddharth Gautam, mobile application developers from Chattisgarh, Odisha, and Karnataka respectively. With over a million downloads to its name and 4.6 stars and 23,000 reviews, the Indian entertainment app is set to compete against its Chinese counterpart.

Sumit Ghosh, Product Head of Chingari, informed that it took him two years to develop the app. He stated that the app has been customised to meet the demands of Indian users. Although released in November 2018, Chingari has started gaining traction recently. Ghosh highlighted, “We are receiving an overwhelming response from Indian users, and as per recent stats, the App has more than 25 lakh plus downloads. This is the only social application developed in India which is a complete rival to TikTok App.”

As per the report, Chingari is available in multiple languages such as Bangla, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Punjabi, Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu. Besides creating content, the Indian app allows users to socialise and browse trending and entertainment news, funny videos, song videos, love quotes, and so on. Users can watch, download, and even share information or entertainment videos with friends and family. It also allows people to earn money on the basis of the virality of the videos. Views can be converted into points and then monetised.

Chingari has over a million downloads on the Google play store

Co-founder of Chingari praises ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given us the clarion call of ‘Vocal for Local’ and Chingari has been developed completely in India. It is the best replacement for video entertainment apps by foreign firms. Chingari isn’t a clone of some foreign app but has been designed in keeping with the needs of Indian users. It is time for all of us to switch to Indian made apps like Chingari,” co-founder Nayak was quoted as saying.

Youtube challenges TikTok with 15-second videos

On Wednesday, Youtube announced that it will test a new feature on its app that would allow users to upload 15-second multi-segment videos. Just like TikTok, users can tap and hold the ‘record’ option to create a video. The app will then combine the clips and post them as a single video, similar to TikTok. The introduction of the new feature implies that mobile videos that are longer than 15 seconds can no longer be uploaded from the Youtube app itself while using this new feature. Users will have to record the long-form videos first and then post it on Youtube from their phone gallery.

Sonam Wangchuk urges Indians to boycott Chinese products

Earlier, Sonam Wangchuk, Ladakh based innovator and education reformist, and the inspiration behind the character Phunsukh Wangdu in the movie 3 Idiots, had taken to his Youtube channel to urge fellow Indians to boycott Chinese products. “The money spent by us on Chinese products will be used by the Government to arm their soldiers. We should not be funding the martyrdom of our own army personnel,” he concluded. Wangchuk also cited the example of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and explained how the boycott of Chinese products can turn out to be a boon for the Indian economy

China sends mixed martial art experts to Tibet capital to train its military posted at the border

Recent reports suggest that China has decided to send 20 martial arts trainers to the Tibetan plateau to train the army personnel there. There is no official word on the reason behind such a decision. However, it is believed that they took the decision after the face-off with Indian troops in the Galwan valley. As per the agreement between India and China, neither side can use arms or explosives in the area. At least 20 Indian troops were killed in the clash, while China has not yet confirmed the exact number. Some experts suggest that the number of dead is higher than 40 on the Chinese side. All this casualty along the LAC happened in the fight without using firearms, using stones, sticks and other such weapons.

Honk Kong media reported that official Chinese news outlets informed about sending the new martial arts trainers to the valley. China’s state broadcaster CCTV said that 20 fighters from Enbo Fight Club would be based in the Tibetan capital Lhasa.

Official military newspaper China National Defense News reported that five new militia divisions including former members of a Mount Everest Olympic torch relay team and fighters from the mixed martial arts club arrived at Lhasa on June 15. Tibet commander Wang Haijiang said that the Enbo Fight Club members would “greatly raise the organization and mobilization strength” of the troops and their “rapid response and support ability.” However, Chinese media has not confirmed if they are going to train troops posted at the border with China.

Enbo Fight Club is located in the city of Chengdu, which trains more than 400 young fighters each year in mixed martial arts (MMA). Most of the students are orphans and from poor background.

India and China have blamed each other for the face-off that took place in Galwan river valley on 15th June. It is considered the deadliest clash between the forces on both sides in more than 50 years. China has tried multiple times to claim land that belongs to India around Line of Actual Control that is a poorly demarcated border between the two nations. Though the bilateral accord prevents the countries from using arms, both countries are increasing their army presence in the area since the face-off.

PDP-NC upset as 25,000 people including over people from Dalit and Gorkha community get domicile certificate, allege govt trying to change ‘Muslim majority’ character of J&K

The Mehbooba Mufti led People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Omar Abdullah-led National Conference (NC) are reportedly upset and angry that 25,000 people, including people from Dalit and Gorkha community are provided domicile certificates of union territory of Jammu & Kashmir. Navin Kumar Choudhary, a Jammu and Kashmir-cadre IAS officer, has also become the first senior non-local officer to get a domicile certificate in Jammu and Kashmir under the new domicile law that was notified after the abrogation of Article 370 in the state.

The senior IAS officer Choudhary, who is the principal secretary of the Jammu and Kashmir Agriculture Production Department, was granted a domicile certificate by a tehsildar in the Bahu area of Jammu. He has been serving in the Jammu and Kashmir government for the past 26 years. With the domicile certificate, the non-locals will now be able to get residency certificate for education, employment and buying land.

“That the applicant is eligible in terms of the following clause of Rule 5 of the Jammu and Kashmir Grant Domicile Certificate (Production) Rules, 2020,” reads certificate issued by the Government which has a photograph and copy of Aadhar Card of Choudhary. About 50 refugees from West Pakistan belonging to Valmiki and Gorkha community who were living in Jammu & Kashmir but were not eligible to full citizenship as per previous laws, were also given the domicile certificate. These families had come to India after 1947 partition and settled in Jammu.

As per reports, the member of the Valmiki community were brought from Punjab in 1957 to work as cleaning staff but it was only after abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, were they given eligible to get domicile certificate and subsequently vote.

The new domicile law has replaced the 93-year-old ‘state subject law’ which barred non-permanent residents from owning land and immovable property in the erstwhile state.

Kashmiri political party oppose domicile certificates

Meanwhile, the political parties in Jammu and Kashmir PDP and NC, along with the Pakistani-sponsored Hurriyat Conference on Friday condemned the issuance of domicile certificates. They claimed that issuance of domicile certificates to non-locals is the first major step towards changing the demography of the Muslim-majority region. They also accused the RSS of hatching the conspiracy of trying to change the demography of Muslim-majority state.

These parties also issued a warning to the the Centre and the local administration of the grave consequences of the “ill-advised, arbitrary and dishonest”.

The PDP alleged that the Modi government was attempting to change the J&K’s Muslim majority character, target its unique identity and facilitate loot of its resources.

“The PDP has voiced its stern opposition to the domicile rules before. It reiterates that through such underhand means, the Government of India intends demographic flooding in J&K while plundering people of their identity and constitutional guarantees,” it said.

The National Conference chief spokesperson Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi said the party unequivocally rejected the “unconstitutional and anti people process” of granting domicile certificates to outsiders and demanded immediate revocation of Domicile Order and Rules.

He said, “All the misgivings raised after the domicile laws were changed in J&K are coming to fore with J&K government’s issuance of domicile certificates to nonresidents of J&K”. He added that the first casualty of this process will be jobs and the land holdings which were earlier reserved for the permanent residents of the erstwhile state, irrespective of their religion or region.

Muslim cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who leads the Pakistan-sponsored Hurriyat conference said that while initiating the implementation of a demographic change in Jammu and Kashmir, the government is simultaneously exploiting its natural wealth and resources and rendering local people jobless, taking advantage of the situation as people are struggling with the COVID-19 pandemic and its adverse effects on their daily lives and livelihood.

‘Sab yaad rakha jayega’: PM Modi and HM Amit Shah take on China and China sympathisers on the same day

The India-China conflict in Ladakh has shown no signs of a resolution yet. After the clash between soldiers from the two camps at Galwan Valley, it appears that the world is realising that the current skirmish at the Line of Actual Control is far more serious than what was previously assumed. Under such circumstances, the government has regularly been issuing statements assuring citizens that Indian territorial sovereignty will not be compromised.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his monthly address – Mann Ki Baat – again paid tributes to the fallen warriors of Galwan Valley. He said that their valour will always be remembered. “Families who lost their sons, still want to send their other children to defence forces… their spirit and sacrifice is venerable,” he added.

Prim Minister Modi also took veiled potshots at China over its conduct at the LAC. He said that “a befitting reply has been given to those coveting our territories”. He also said that the world has taken note of India’s commitment towards protecting its borders and sovereignty.

The same day, Home Minister Amit Shah also took a jibe at China at the expense of the Congress party and Rahul Gandhi. During an interview with news agency ANI, he said, “We are fully capable of handling anti-India propaganda but it does pain when a former president of such a big political party does ochhi rajiniti (shallow politics)’ at a time of problems.”

“It is a matter of self-introspection for him and Congress that his hashtag is being taken forward by Pakistan and China. It is not for me. It is a matter of concern for Congress that hashtag of their leader is being encouraged by Pakistan and China. You say what China and Pakistan like. And at this time of crisis,” he added.

The Home Minister stated further, “There will be Parliament (session). If you want to discuss, we will. Let everything be discussed from 1962 to today. No one is afraid of discussion. But when the soldiers of the country are making efforts, the government is taking solid steps after taking a stand, at that time, making statements that please Pakistan and China should not be done.”

During the same interview, when journalist Smita Prakash suggested that India was fighting two wars currently, one at the LAC and the other against the Wuhan Coronavirus, Amit Shah assured that India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi will win both these wars.

Statements by the Prime Minister and Home Minister of the country on the same day against China and its sympathisers in India come at a time when the ruling dispensation appears to have made up its mind that time has come for India to address the ‘panda’ in the room. Numerous moves are also being made on the economic front as China seeks to establish itself as essentially an economic hegemony.

Apart from voluntary efforts by private entities to boycott China, the government is also reportedly drawing a list of countries to replace China in supplying critical components. Simultaneously, India is also looking to ramp up its manufacturing base to cut its dependence on China for products. Consistent with this, the government has also made it mandatory for sellers on e-markets to mention the ‘country of origin’ of products.

Thus, the government appears to have decided that the conflict with China will not be resolved in a day or weeks or even months. A well calibrated approach appears to have been formulated to counter China effectively. Thus, the regular statements by the Prime Minister and Home Minister and other functionaries within the government appear to be a conscious effort to instil consciousness about the Chinese threat among the larger populace.

As OpIndia takes on the mighty and the powerful, here is an ode to the one taking it heads on

0

“It was March in 415AD in Alexandira that the Parabalanis, a group of fanatic Christian terrorists, gathered around the chariot of Hypatia and declared that she was not merely a difficult woman, not merely a philosopher and mathematician, she was a creature of hell. It was she who was turning the entire city against God with her trickery and her spells. She was atheizing Alexandria. And then she was ordered to get down from her chariot and the Church Magistrate seized the ‘pagan’ woman and threw her to the fanatics. They then lynched her, tore her body into pieces and threw what was left of the luminous child of reason onto a pyre and burned her.” –broadly referring to Catherine Nixey’s description of the death of Hypatia in her book The Darkening Age.

Every woman who goes around breaking the idols of false Gods, atheizing the people must be fearing this frightening fate of Hypatia at the hands of fanatics. Nupur Sharma is the editor of Opindia, a news portal which has taken it onto itself to refuse the silken softness of fakery which has been passing on as News for long in India. I have been writing for OpIndia as an independent contributor and that is how and that is how much I know Nupur.

I have initially been exasperated with her demand of having clear citation and references for what I wrote in my article. But later, I got used to it and when I saw these legal hounds chase her with a planned vengeance as Prashant Bhushan urged his leftist friends to drown the opposing ideology in a flood of FIRs, I much appreciated her painstaking and often stubborn insistence to seek reference for historical articles as I argued and eventually succumbed.

I saw her other day on Republic, struggling with her soft voice and respectful tone struggling to speak over the loud, vociferous and indignant rant of another women panelist. She appeared to be having a very vulnerable demeanor, which gives no hint of the steely soul which she hides inside. All the FIRs against her have been stayed.

The leftist lady on the panel, niece to the actor who had claimed to be scared in India on account of his religion, shouted her lungs out, stating that it was only a stay and not the vindication. Those who were celebrating the bail of riot-accused Islamist Safoora Zargar on humanitarian ground were quick to point out that the liberation from the maze of law built around Nupur and OpIndia team is still away.

That Nupur is a woman and mother to a toddler is besides the point. Nupur is an editor who is being harassed by illegal questioning by a Police cell, at the behest of local political leadership of West Bengal, under the pressure of Leftist-Liberal cabal is more important. It is more important that even registration of an FIR against the leftist journalists who are not even editor elicits immediate condemnation from the Editor’s Guild of India, but the harassment of Nupur Sharma, who IS an editor does not get even a pretense of disinterested disapproval demonstrates the fault lines of Indian intellectual class.

With this almost illegal Police action by West Bengal Police, Nupur Sharma stands with Romesh Thapar and Mazrooh Sultanpuri harassed by Jawaharlal Nehru government and numerous other journalists jailed and troubled by Indira Gandhi in Congress tradition of democracy. This incident reduces Editor’s Guild of India led by Shekhar Gupta who leads an outrageously separatist and communalist rag called The Print, into a Carrom Board Club of jobless goons on the street Corner. These Press clubs and Editors’ Guild it seems are nothing but national nuisance. They have allowed themselves to fall beyond redemption.

Another worthy of the party of Mamata Bannerjee, Anirban, on camera, said that OpIndia should be banned. These are the same people who run around shouting Fascism if anything as much as rebuttal is written on the propaganda pieces that they mostly write. While the first instance of book burning goes back to 213 BCE when the Chinese Emperor Shih Huang Ti decided to burn books and scholars (China does not seem to have moved far from those dark days), so that the history of China might begin with him, its most recent history goes to the Nationalist Socialist or Nazi party of Germany under Hitler in 1933.

The thought has always remained dear to the Communists as scholars and artists went untraced earlier in Russia and later China. Now those who trace their links to Fascism, Stalinism and Maoism have merged into one in India. This thought of banning a news portal is not different from the idea of Chinese Emperor to burn the books and scholars.

Mamata Bannerjee was an active young member of Student’s wing of Congress during Emergency and it is a surprise and lack of understanding of History of the common people that she today poses as a big defender of democracy and cries Emergency every now and then whenever her little fiefdom is threatened by the law of the land. What her spokesperson says, says with her clearance, open or otherwise. Neither was she ever a democrat nor is her party. This portal-banning and book burning idea runs from the top of the political forces who claim to be fighting to free India from fascism of Modi government. We need to be worried about this.

We need to worry about Nupur for she lives in Mamata’s state. It is not about Nupur Sharma, the person, the woman, the mother. It is about what Nupur Sharma represents- the iconoclast, the person who is bringing down the demi-Gods carefully created by the cunning gang of crafty intellectuals, post-independence and mostly, post-Emergency when the left prostrated in front of Indira’s ruthless repression. She is the force which is atheizing Indian democracy. She is cleaning up the intellectual space like the modern-age Hypatia.

And for that she needs to be defended and her victory, however small it might be, ought to be celebrated. An independent-minded woman epitomizes a society which is propelled by intellectual prowess, not by animal force of physical strength. This is what Hypatia represented. The collapse of the intellectual edifice of Ancient Rome did not begin in 532 AD when the last seven teachers of the famous Academy of Plato left. It started when Hypatia was brought down.

It marked the fall of intellectual liberty, it marked the devaluation of mind as a currency of power in the society. Therefore, we need to be very watchful of how the strong and powerful of our society treat the Hypatias of our times. Nupur has taken up a big task. The thought she represents, the team she works with is changing the way we read news. It is irreverential, truthful and blunt.

It fears none and it opens its portals for lesser-mortals. That is why it must be defended. There are fanatics lurking around us in dark corners, sipping their Champagnes and cursing the ordinary folks who have invaded their cozy, little world of journalism where they played havoc on the unsuspecting minds with impunity. As Ray Bradbury said, in his celebrated book Fahrenheit 451,

“There is more than one way to burn a book. And the world is full of people running about with lit matchsticks.”

Rajasthan: FIR filed against Baba Ramdev, NIMS Director and others for claiming that Patanjali’s Coronil can cure Coronavirus

On Saturday, a First information report (FIR) was reportedly lodged against yoga guru Baba Ramdev for marketing ‘Coronil’, an Ayurvedic drug, as a cure for Coronavirus, without the approval of Ayush Ministry. The FIR was registered by the Jyoti Nagar police station in Rajasthan, on the basis of a complaint by an advocate Balram Jakhar who practices in the Rajasthan High Court.

Besides Ramdev, the FIR has pressed charges against the Managing Director of Patanjali Ayurved, Acharya Balkrishna, senior scientist Anurag Varshney, the director of NIMS, BS Tomar, and his son Anurag Tomar. Additional Commissioner of Police (Jaipur), Ashok Gupta, informed that a case was registered against the people, mentioned above, on the basis of a complaint by Jakhar. He further stated that multiple complaints were received against Baba Ramdev and Patanjali Ayurved at several police stations in the State.

They have been booked under the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act and Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The complainant stated that in a press conference on June 23, Baba Ramdev claimed that an Ayurved drug manufactured by the Patanjali Research Institute in Hardiwar could cure Coronavirus. Citing the dismissal of these claims by the Ayush Ministry and the Centre, advocate Balram Jakhar added, “It (Patanjali Ayurved) has not verified that the medicine fulfils the parameters of WHO and AYUSH Ministry. Therefore, this attempt reeks of criminal intent, and therefore, I lodged an FIR at Jyotinagar police station under various sections of the law.”

Patanjali and NIMS defend Coronil

In his defence, Acharya Balkrishna had earlier clarified that all procedures were followed during the manufacture of Coronil and refuted claims of wrongdoings while obtaining the licence. NIMS Chairman Balbir Singh Tomar said, “We had all required permissions for conducting the trial on patients. Prior permission for testing was taken from CTRI, which is a body of ICMR. I have papers to show permission.” He said that trials were conducted on 100 patients at NIMS in Jaipur and 69 per cent of them were cured in three days, while 100 per cent were cured in seven days. He said, “The question of whether Coronil should have been propagated as an immunity booster or cure should be asked from Patanjali. We had informed the Rajasthan health department on June 2.”

Rajasthan’s Health Department has also issued a notice to NIMS hospital here seeking an explanation on conducting trials of Coronil made by by Patanjali on coronavirus patients.

Baba Ramdev launches Coronavirus treatment kit

Amidst rising cases of Coronavirus in the country, Patanjali Ayurved—the entity run by renowned Yoga guru Ramdev had launched an Ayurvedic medicine combination that claimed to cure the Wuhan originated Coronavirus disease within 3-7 days. The Ayurveda based pharmaceutical company launched a kit containing ‘Coronil’ tablets, Swasri tablet, and Anu oil, claiming that these ayurvedic medicines have shown up to 100 percent favourable results during the clinical trials. In addition, the clinical trials have reportedly revealed that the usage of the aforesaid medicine resulted in the reduction of hsCRP and IL-6 levels in the treatment group as compared to the placebo group. The Ayurvedic treatment also showed weaker IL-6 response causing a lesser chance of cytokine storm.

Watch: PML-N leader Khawaja Asif slams Imran Khan for Pakistan’s brother nations voting for India at UNSC

On Thursday, Khawaja Asif, Pakistani legislator and a member of the PML-N (Pakistan Muslim League-Noon), slammed Prime Minister Imran Khan for his failures on the diplomatic front and praised India for securing the non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) with a high vote margin.

14 minutes into his speech, Asif stated, “It is not a big deal to become a non-permanent member of the UNSC. However, to win by 184 votes out of a total of 192 votes is a big deal. Our so-called brother nations have voted for India. Other countries get elected by 140 or 145 or even 150 seats but India got elected with 182 seats.”

“Face the reality! Be it foreign policy or health or economy, everything is failing and collapsing (in Pakistan). And you (Imran Khan) are trying to appease us. The water has run over our heads. “The destruction caused to Pakistan due to Imran Khan can only be reversed if we get rid of him. As long as he remains on the throne, the cycle of devastation will continue,” Khwaja Asif emphasised.

Slams Imran Khan for calling bin Laden a ‘martyr’

The PML-N legislator also reprimanded Imran Khan for referring to slain terrorist Osama bin Laden as a ‘shaheed (martyr).’ “The man brought terrorism to this country. He was a terrorist of the highest level. He has destroyed my country. But our Prime Minister is calling him a martyr. Osama was brought to this country by Zia-ul-Haq (erstwhile military dictator) but Imran is calling him ‘shaheed’. Even Pervez Musharraf was Imran’s Godfather and continues to remain so,” Asif highlighted.

India wins UNSC seat unopposed

In a significant development, India was elected to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) as a non-permanent member from the Asia-Pacific category for a two-year term on Wednesday night. According to the reports, India received overwhelming support as it was elected unopposed as one of the non-permanent members of the UNSC after winning 184 votes in the 193-member General Assembly. The minimum requirement to get elected was 128 votes. India will begin its two-year term on January 1, 2021. This is the eighth time that India will sit at the UN high-table, which comprises five permanent members and 10 non-permanent members.

Nizamuddin Markaz charge sheet: Malaysia, Indonesia nationals were virus carriers, ignored lawful directions

The Delhi Police’s chargesheet filed against the Tablighi Jamaat mentions that the Malaysian and Indonesian nationals who attended the gathering were carriers of the deadly virus and that led initial wave of coronavirus in India. The charge sheet talks about similar gatherings in Malaysia which ended up being a super-spreader event. It also talks about a canceled event in Indonesia where Covid-19 cases were reported before the outbreak in Delhi. Markaz Nizamuddin became the Covid hotspot and allegedly played a vital role in spreading it across the country.

The chargesheet says, “It is needless to point out that some of these foreigners have acted as carriers of the highly infectious coronavirus and had thus brought over the infection from their respective countries to India.” In the chargesheet, police mentioned that six people who attended Markaz died in Delhi and Haryana and one of them was a foreigner.

Chronology of events as per the charge sheet

Police mentioned in the chargesheet that the gathering in Malaysia between 27th and 1st March resulted in 500 Covid-19 cases in that country. An event scheduled for 18th March in Indonesia was canceled because of the authorities’ concerns. By that time, 25 people were already dead, and 309 were infected in that country. The chargesheet said that people from Malaysia, Indonesia, and other countries came to India to participate in the Markaz gathering in Nizamuddin. As per the police, they acted as carriers of the virus.

In the chargesheet, it was said that the CDMO/Southeast district contacted Markaz authorities on 19th March and asked to maintain social distancing and ensure home quarantine after an Indonesian man was tested positive in Telangana. He had a history of traveling to Delhi for Markaz gathering. Delhi Police contacted a Markaz official named Haji Yunus and asked him that there should not be more than 20 jamaaties in Nizamuddin at any given time.

On 21st March, Delhi Police called Mufti Shahzad and asked him to immediately ensure foreign nationals leave for their respective states or countries. When the lockdown was announced on 24th March, Delhi Police issued prohibitory orders, but no official from Benglewali Masjid Markaz took any precautionary steps. On 25th March, a medical team was sent for the first time as there were reports no one was following social distancing orders and one jamaati from Bangladesh started to show symptoms for Covid-19. On inspection, the police found that there were 526 foreign nationals and 1,183 Indians at the Markaz.

On 28th March, SHO of Hazrat Nizamuddin sent a written complaint to DCP Crime Branch and informed them about the alleged violation by the head of Markaz Maulana Saad and management. Lawyer for Tabhligi Jamaat, advocate Mujeed Rehman said, What good is an advisory by the administration at that time, asking to ensure social distancing? Tablighi members were self-isolated in Nizamuddin. Authorities should have shut down airports, screened passengers, and undertaken contact tracing.”

Once police started to track jamaatis across countries, they found clusters of Covid positive cases across the country who came in contact with these Markaz members. The information provided by Markaz was incomplete or unverified in many cases and it became hard for the administration to track jamaatis on time. They even tried to project that it is a conspiracy of the Indian government to defame jamaatis. The center has told the Supreme Court in a recent statement that Markaz management deliberately disregarded police instructions to send back its members.

Under PM Modi’s leadership, India will win both the battles: Amit Shah on, China, Chinese virus and Rahul Gandhi

Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said that under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, India will win both the battles, one against the Chinese coronavirus, the deadly disease originating from China that has gripped the world to the one at border in Ladakh.

HM Amit Shah was speaking to news agency ANI Editor Smita Prakash where he took on China’s aggression in Ladakh, the Chinese coronavirus as well as opposition, especially Congress and Rahul Gandhi.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said that the government ready for a robust debate in the Parliament on the recent violent standoff in Ladakh with China and challenged the Congress party to also discuss the India-China relations since 1962 on the floor of the Parliament.

Speaking to news agency ANI Editor Smita Prakash, Home Minister Amit Shah said that the government was fully capable of handling anti-India propaganda but it was painful when a former president of such a big political party indulges in shallow-minded politics at a time of crisis. “No one is afraid of discussion, but when the soldiers of the country are fighting and the government has taken a strong stand and taking steps, at that time, then at such a time one shouldn’t give statements that make Pakistan and China happy,” he said.

Responding to Rahul Gandhi’s constant attack on the Modi government over the current India-China stand-off, Union Home Minister Amit Shah accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of making pro-China remarks during the ongoing border tensions with China. The Home Minister also asserted that the government was prepared for a debate in Parliament where a discussion can also be held from the 1962 India-China war onwards till now.

“Yes we are fully capable of handling anti-India propaganda but it does pain when a former President of such a big political party does “ochi rajiniti” (shallow-minded politics) at a time of problems. It is a matter of self-introspection for him and Congress that his hashtag is being taken forward by Pakistan and China. It is not for me. It is a matter of concern for Congress that the hashtag of their leader is being encouraged by Pakistan and China. You say what China and Pakistan like. And at this time of crisis,” added Amit Shah.

“Parliament honi hai, charcha karni hai to aaiye, karenge. 1962 se aaj tak do-do haath ho jayein. Koi nahi darta charcha se. Jab jawan sangharsh kar rahe hain, sarkar thos kadam utha rahi hai,uss waqt Pak aur China ko khushi ho aisi statements nahi deni chahiye.” (There will be parliament (session). If you want to discuss, we will. Let all be discussed from 1962 to today. No one is afraid of discussion. But when the soldiers of the country are making efforts, the government is taking solid steps after taking a stand. At that time, making statements that please Pakistan and China, this should not be done),” he said.

When asked regarding the current stand-off between India and China, the Union Home Minister said that it was not the appropriate time to comment on the situation at the LAC and that “briefings were on going and if the need arose, he would answer.”

He further said that under PM Modi’s leadership, India will win both the battles, one against the Chinese virus and other against the Chinese intrusion on Indian soil.

The Home Minister’s sharp response to the Gandhi-scion Rahul Gandhi comes after the former Congress President had politicised the ongoing stand-off between the two countries and attacked the Modi government over their silence on the issue critical to national security.

Rahul Gandhi posted a video and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi should tell “the truth” as several accounts were saying that China has made incursions in Eastern Ladakh. In his tweet, Rahul Gandhi had accused Prime Minister of “publicly supporting” China’s claim and had termed him as “Surender Modi” while alleging that “PM has surrendered Indian territory to Chinese aggression”.

Prasar Bharati may cut ties with PTI, here is why the public broadcaster is angry with the news agency

The Press Trust of India (PTI) has found itself in quite a spot of bother after it provided a platform to the Chinese ambassador to run their propaganda. In an interview with the news agency, Sun Weidong placed the entire blame for the Galwan Valley clash at India’s feet without ever being confronted by the PTI over the Chinese propaganda.

The Government of India appears to have taken a strong position against the conduct of the PTI, a sentiment that was shared by many across the board. As we had reported yesterday, Prasar Bharti has decided to review its relationship with the PTI following the ‘interview’ which some people have called a press release by the Chinese Communist Party.

Sources had told us that PTI’s ‘anti-national’ reporting does not make it feasible for Prasar Bharti to carry forward the relationship. The PTI has been receiving fees from the public broadcaster for decades, which run into crores. We have been told that PTI will be informed of Prasar Bharati’s decision soon. Sources have now told us that since 1980, PTI has received nearly Rs. 200 crores in public funding with no public accountability.

In today’s terms, the funding would be equivalent to an investment of Rs. 400 to Rs. 800 crores, depending on the interest rate. Sources told us that the authorities believe there needs to be greater transparency on how much the PTI charges private media organisations in comparison with the public funding that is sought.

Another major concern is that majority of directors on the board of PTI are from private media organisations. Prasar Bharati believes that PTI charges them much more than what it charges from private newspapers and news channels for their subscription, and the public broadcaster is of the opinion that there should be transparency in the pricing. It is learnt that a thorough review is being sought of the professional relationship between the PTI and Prasar Bharti.

It appears that the authorities have had enough with the transgressions of the PTI. It will become evident in the days to come whether PTI will lose public funding. The news agency, of course, has a history of peddling communally charged fake news and fake news on political matters as well. However, by providing a platform to China to run its propaganda, PTI appears to have crossed the line.

How does a news agency earn its revenue?

The PTI is a news agency and hence, earns its revenue by distributing its news reports among those who have bought their subscription. A news agency thus earns its revenue by gathering reports and then selling it to interested parties. PTI reports, for example, appear on most mainstream media outlets. Other news agencies like ANI, IANS and UNI, and global agencies like Reuters and AP etc also have numerous subscribers among media outlets.

Long history of fake news

Apart from the current controversy regarding PTI, the agency also has a long history of peddling fake news. As news organisations publish agency reports without any editing most of the times, fake news by news agencies have much more reach compared such fake reports by individual media houses. In July last hear, PTI had published a report claiming that finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in parliament that demonetisation has no affect on economy. The finance minister herself had to clarify that she didn’t made any such statement, after several media houses carried the misleading report.

During Delhi assembly elections this year, PTI had completely misreported the share of candidates with criminal records from various parties. While AAP had 51% candidates facing serious criminal cases, PTI reported it as only 25%, misquoting a report by Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR). Similarly, they had also changed the numbers for BJP and Congress.

In 2017, Press Trust of India had claimed that the UP government had drastically cut the budgetary allocation for secondary and higher education in the state. In that instant too, they had reported wrong numbers. In the same year, PTI had come out with a news feed which claimed that the former Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar had planned the 2016 surgical strikes in the Pakistan occupied Kashmir due to an “insulting question” of a TV news anchor, which was completely false.

After the anti-CAA riots last year, the UP govt had decided to take over and auction properties of rioters to recover money for damages caused to public and private properties by them. But this step was also misreported by PTI, which claimed that Yogi Adityanath had“vowed to take ‘revenge’ against those involved in the violence.

These were just a few example of fake news by the news agency, they regularly published fake, misleading and slanted reports, which are widely carried by the media houses.
