Arnab Kumar Sarkar is now survived by his parents.

Attack on Hindus in Bangladesh since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina

OpIndia has been vetting and reporting cases of atrocities on Hindus since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina on 5th August 2024.

There have been at least 205 attacks on Hindu temples, shops and businesses within 3 days of the fall of Dhaka.

We previously exposed how Muslim students have forced as many as 60 Hindu teachers, professors and government officials to resign from their positions.

Human rights activist and exiled Bangladeshi blogger, Asad Noor, has recently revealed that the minority community is now being coerced into joining ‘Jamaat-e-Islami’.

On 6th September, a procession of Hindu devotees carrying the idol of Lord Ganesha came under attack in the Kadam Mubarak area in Chittagong city of Bangladesh.

Ahead of the Durga Puja celebrations, a radical Muslim man named Yasin Mia vandalised the idols of Goddess Durga and other Hindu deities in Gouripur town in the Mymensingh district of Bangladesh on 25th September.

In the latest series of attacks, idols of Goddess Durga and other Hindu deities were vandalised at the Rishipara Barwari Puja Mandap and the Manikadi Palpara Barwari Pujamandap on 28th September and 1st October respectively.

The attacks were carried out in Sujanagar upazila in Pabna district in Rajshahi Division of Bangladesh. While a total of 4 idols were defaced at the Rishipara Barwari Puja Mandap, another 5 Hindu idols were destroyed at the Manikadi Palpara Barwari Pujamandap.

On 3rd October, 7 idols of Hindu deities were destroyed at the Gopinath Jiur Akhara Durga Puja mandap in Kishoreganj, Dhaka Division, Bangladesh.

On 5th November, the Hindu community came under attack from police and law enforcement authorities in Hazari Goli in Chittagong city of Bangladesh.

On 29th November, a violent Muslim mob attacked Hindu minorities and vandalised 3 temples in Patharghata in Chittagong district of Bangladesh.

The Hindu religious sites that the Muslims targeted included the Shantaneshwari Matri Temple, the Shoni Temple, and Shantaneshwari Kalibari Temple. The attack took place immediately after the conclusion of Jumma Namaz

On 30th November, a prominent Hindu journalist named Munni Saha was arrested by the police from Karwan Bazar in Dhaka city of Bangladesh.

A group of extremists attacked the Mahashmashan Kali Mata Mandir, vandalised 7 idols of deities and stole gold ornaments on 13th December 2024.

On 19th December, a Muslim man identified as Alal Uddin vandalised an idol at the Polashkanda Kali Temple and then attempted to create a fake alibi. The incident occurred in Haluaghat upazila in the Mymensingh district of Bangladesh.

Another 37-year-old Muslim man identified as Azharul vandalised several idols of deities in Haluaghat Upazila in the Mymensingh district of Bangladesh.

The recent arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu and his aides, attempts at banning Hindu organisation ISKCON and stiffling Hindu protests with cases of ‘sedition’ highlight systematic persecution under the interim government of Muhammad Yunus.

There have been multiple instances of attacks on Hindus under the pretext of ‘blasphemy.’ The recent cases of Hridoy PalUtsab MandalPartha Biswas PintuAkash DasPranta Talukder and Utsab Kumar Gian are shining examples of targeted persecution.

So far, there have been many attempts to downplay violence against Hindus as ‘fake‘, ‘exaggerated‘ or ‘politically motivated‘.

NHAI orders action in the toll plaza scam, three accused arrested by the UP STF

0

After the Special Task Force (STF) of Uttar Pradesh uncovered a massive toll tax scam involving 42 toll plazas across 14 states across the country, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) ordered action in connection with the scam on Friday. In its order dated January 24, 2025, the NHAI asked all the Regional Offices of all the toll plazas to take necessary action to check fraudulent practices and submit an ‘Action Taken Report’ to the CO Division.

The UP STF unearthed a huge scam on Tuesday in which crores of Rupees were siphoned off by diverting the money paid in toll tax. The full extent of the losses incurred by the government in countrywide scam is not yet known. An estimate of the total loss can be gauged from the fact that the NHAI suffered losses of Rs 45,000 daily at the Atraula toll plaza of Mirzapur. The STF raided the Atraula toll plaza on Tuesday and later arrested three persons named Alok Kumar Singh (Varanasi), Manish Mishra (Madhya Pradesh) and Rajiv Kumar Mishra (Prayagraj) in connection with the fraud. The STF arrested Alok Kumar Singh on Wednesday near Babatpur airport in Varanasi. From the information received after interrogating Singh, the STF arrested the other two culprits from Shivgulam toll plaza on Mirzapur highway.

Scammers developed an illegal software system to divert toll

Alok Kumar, a 35-year-old MCA graduate, allegedly masterminded the entire scam. He created an illegal software system to divert the toll collections to private bank accounts belonging to his gang members. This software targeted vehicles without FASTag or with insufficient FASTag balance which are typically charged double the toll. Singh reportedly created an unauthorised program that ran parallel to the NHAI official software and generated receipts resembling the authentic NHAI receipts which made it difficult to detect the fraud. He was assisted by toll plaza managers and IT professionals in installing the software on toll booth systems.

The other two arrested persons Manish Mishra and Rajiv Kumar Mishra worked as a toll booth employee and a toll manager respectively. The toll diverted by the illegal software system was shared among Singh and his accomplices including toll managers. Singh reportedly admitted to installing the software system at 42 toll plazas. Out of these 42 toll plazas, 9 are in Uttar Pradesh, 6 are in Madhya Pradesh, 4 each are in Rajasthan, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh, 3 each are in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, 2 each are in Punjab, Assam and West Bengal, and 1 each in Jammu, Odisha, Himachal Pradesh and Telangana.

Laptops, printers and other electronics recovered from the accused

The UP STF seized two laptops, a printer, five mobile phones, cash worth Rs 19, 580 and an MUV. The STF is interrogating the culprits and examining the seized gadgets. According to Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), STF, Vinod Kumar Singh, Alok Kumar Singh monitored transactions and details of non-FASTag vehicles through his laptop which had direct access to the illegal software. He added that legally 50 per cent of the tolls collected from non-FASTag vehicles should go to the NHAI but the culprits diverted this amount to their private bank accounts. Alok Kumar Singh had been operating the scam for the past two years with the help of his other two accomplices Sawant and Sukhantu who managed the system in the 42 toll plazas. To avoid suspicion, Singh made sure that only 5 per cent of tolls from non-FASTag vehicles were registered in the NHAI’s software and the rest was marked as exempted or unregistered.

Former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria says Gautam Adani is dedicating his wealth for Sanatan Dharma, not pandering to any ‘ecosystem’

0

Former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria on Friday praised Adani group chairman Gautam Adani for his service at Maha Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj. Kaneria said that Adani is dedicating his wealth and resources to serving Sanatan Dharma, not pandering to any ‘ecosystem.’

He said that this is the reason why forces around the world are working relentlessly to bring this man down, in an apparent reference to the attack on the Adani group by leftist media houses and the ‘reports’ by now-defunct Hindenburg Research.

Danish Kaneria added, “As someone from a Gujarati Hindu family, I take immense pride in having you as part of our community.” The leg-spinner posted the comments on X quoting a tweet by Gautam Adani talking about the Adani group’s Mahaprasad and Aarti Sangrah distribution services at the Kumbh Mela.

The Adani group chief said, “We are blessed to have the holy opportunity to serve millions of devotees on the divine occasion of Maha Kumbh. Service is sadhana, service is prayer and service is God. May the blessings of Maa Ganga remain on all of us.” He used the hashtag #SevaHiSaadhnaHai in the tweet.

Gautam Adani also posted a video with information regarding the Maha Kumbh and his company’s services offering at the event. It said that Adani Group and Gital Press are distributing 1 crore Aarti Sangrah at the Mela.

Moreover, the company has collaborated with ISCKON to serve Mahaprasad to 1 lakh visitors to the mela daily. The two organisations is offering Mahaprasad Seva to the devotees during the entire duration of the Maha Kumbh Mela, from January 13 to February 26.

Gautam Adani attended the Maha Kumbh Mela on Tuesday and offered prayers at Triveni Sangam. He also visited the camp of the ISKCON temple at the fair and helped cook Mahaprasad.

The growing menace of Christian evangelism: How a UP man was taken to a church in Jalandhar and forcibly converted on the pretext of being treated for an illness

0

A man from Kaushambi, Uttar Pradesh became a victim of religious conversion while seeking treatment for a problem of cervical spondylitis. He was taken to Jalandhar where he was forced to convert. The victim Virendra Kumar Divakar is a resident of Jafarpur Mahawa in Kaushami. He has been suffering from cervical spondylitis for a long time. His condition did not improve despite years of treatment.

The victim was taken to church on the pretext of treating his disease

As per reports, one day Divakar came across a person named Shankarlal Chaurasia from the Manjhanpur police station area. Chaurasia allegedly trapped Divakar by promising to get his illness cured. He took Divakar to Jalandhar, Punjab, in May 2024 on the pretext of taking him to a hospital. Instead, Chaurasia took Divakar to a church on the Khambra Nakodar Road in Jalandhar. Divakar’s wife also accompanied him. Divakar alleged that on reaching the church, he was forced to convert to Christianity. He alleged the involvement of several other people in forcing him to convert.

The victim was offered money to convert

According to Divakar, in exchange for conversion, he was promised payment of one thousand rupees every month and a sum of Rs 5 lakh after returning to his home. When he did not receive any money even after six months, Divakar realised that he had been conned into converting. On January 18, Divakar went to confront Chaurasia at his house. But Chaurasia did not listen to him and abused and beat him up.

Police filed a case and arrested the accused

A case was registered by the police on the victim’s complaint. The police arrested the accused near Tannapur village. Around 76 pamphlets and posters containing inflammatory remarks and Christian religious texts were recovered from the accused, as informed by Inspector Sanjay Tiwari. Additional SP Rajesh Singh said that an investigation has been going on in the matter.

The alarming rise of evangelism in India

The case underscores the alarming rise of Christian evangelism in India, especially in rural India, where unsuspecting and uninformed locals are often hoodwinked into embracing Christianity by employing a slew of ingenious and age-old measures, including threats, psychological manipulation, false promises of social emancipation, financial inducements and many more.

A recent report published in Dainik Jagran revealed that in just the last 2 years in Punjab, more than 3 lakh 50 thousand people have converted their religion and become Christians. According to the reports, in Punjab, only in the year 2023-24, 1.5 lakh people converted, while during 2024-25, two lakh people changed their religion.

In November 2024, a report shone light on the shocking conversion activities underway at the Calvary Church in Andhra Pradesh, which reportedly converted over 3,000 Hindus every month. The report sparked outrage among locals, following which the Andhra Pradesh government ordered its demolition.

Similarly, in December 2024, it came to the fore that Christian missionaries in Uttar Pradesh were using the “Madhesi conversion model” from Nepal, targeting economically disadvantaged groups with promises of miraculous healing and financial gain. This strategy, which has been successful in Nepal, involves Korean pastors and funding from foreign countries, raising concerns about cultural identity and national unity. It caused alarm in Uttar Pradesh and spurred the authorities into taking action against conversion ‘crusaders’.

Growing consensus to bring natural gas and aviation fuel under the ambit of GST: Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri

Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Puri on Friday said that there is a growing consensus to bring natural gas under the ambit of GST, but stopped short of hinting at a timeline.

“LPG gas is already 100 per cent saturated,” he said, referring to LPG gas connections and the success of PM Ujjwala scheme.

On the matter of GST on LPG, the government maintained that it was under the GST since the beginning.

“LPG is under the ambit of GST since the beginning,” Petroleum and Natural Gas Secretary Pankaj Jain said, who was also present during the press conference.

Commercial LPG cylinder attracts 18 per cent GST and domestic attracts 5 per cent.

Ujjwala gas currently sells at Rs 503 per unit, and non-Ujjwala at Rs 803 per unit in Delhi.

The minister, responding to a reporter’s question, asserted that aviation turbine fuel will also be taken up for consideration under the GST.

“Our sense out of the last GST meeting was that ATF (aviation turbine fuel) is likely to come on soon under GST but bringing Natural gas is also on the cards,” the minister said.

“There were a large number of states which earlier had reservations like Gujarat, Maharashtra, AP, but they are now more or less seeing the benefits of that. I don’t want to put a timeline, because its not my field. I am the line ministry, and the taxation issue falls under the finance ministry and GST council,” said the minister. “If you ask me, I would say sooner than later (it will happen).”

There have been discussions of bringing petrol and diesel under the GST regime, but several states, from time to time, have opposed this idea. Petroleum products are currently not part of the GST framework.

Moving on to biofuel blending with petrol, Minister Puri said that 20 per cent blending of ethanol with petrol will be completed next month.

The government has been ambitious of attaining 20 per cent ethanol-blended petrol by 2024-25 financial year and 30 per cent by 2029-30. The government has advanced the target of E20 fuel from 2030 to 2025.

E20 blending in petrol was introduced by the Centre to reduce the country’s oil import cost, energy security, lower carbon emissions and better air quality.

India, however, has no plans to mandate the blending of ethanol with diesel. The issue of blending ethanol with diesel is still at an experimental stage.

First conviction of Christian evangelists under UP’s anti-conversion law: Christian couple sentenced to 5 years in prison for mass conversion of Dalits. Read the court verdict

On 22nd January, a special court in the Ambedkar Nagar district in Uttar Pradesh known for redressing offences against socially disadvantaged castes, for the very first time in the country, convicted a Christian couple under Uttar Pradesh’s anti-conversion law. Pastor Jose Pappachan and his wife Sheeja Pappachan were found guilty of forced religious conversions. They were put behind bars for five years. A fine of Rs 25,000 was also levied on each of them. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Dalit activist Dr Chandrika Prasad filed a complaint against the couple on 18th January 2023.

Jose was imprisoned on the same day while his spouse was incarcerated on 22nd January. The BJP leader disclosed that the couple had been active among the Dalit community in the district’s Shahpur Firoz area for several months, attempting to persuade poor families to become Christians and offering them multiple temptations for at least the past three months. Their actions have offended people and also hurt members of the Dalit community. They had even assembled a sizable Dalit population to perform mass conversions on 25th December 2022.

A First Information Report (FIR No. 0031/2023) was registered by the authorities at Jalalpur Police Station based on the written complaint. The authorities probed the case, gathered witness accounts, conducted an inspection and created a map of the events during the inquiry. The chargesheet against the accused was handed to the court for cognizance once the official completed all the formalities.

The chargesheet was submitted by the police using the testimony of the eyewitnesses that resulted in the conviction. The pair were deemed culpable under section 3/5 of the Uttar Pradesh (UP) Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, according to Ambedkar Nagar SP (Superintendent of Police) Keshav Kumar. Section 3 (1) of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act was also invoked against them which was later scrapped by the court. The perpetrators are residents of Bijanwada village, Pipariya Tehsil, Bajjarwada in Hoshangabad of Madhya Pradesh. Jose Pappachan is from Kerala. The order was pronounced by the bench of Judge Ram Vilas Singh.

What’s inside the verdict

On 31st March 2023, Josh Pappachan and Sheeja AMN were charged under Section 3/5 (1) of the UP Prevention of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021 and Section 3 (1) of the SC/ST Act. However, the accused contested the allegation and requested a trial. On 8th October 2024, the court issued an order amending the Act to replace the Ordinance in Section 2 and deleting Section 1 of the aforementioned charge dated 31st March.

Chandrika Parasd was also among the PWs (prosecution witnesses). CO (Circle Officer) Devendra Kumar was also examined. Various testimonials and statements were employed to prove the charges as well as the incriminating evidence including one big book, four diary books, two small diaries and four calendars on Jesus Christ. On the prosecution’s request, the introduction of the evidence was halted.

The accused’s statement, recorded under Section 313 CrPC (Code of Criminal Procedure) upon the prosecution’s evidence, refuted the accusations and claimed that the other side was fabricating the case out of political ambition and improperly acquiring government funds. It was alleged that there was no defence evidence provided.

“I have carefully reviewed all of the material in the file and listened to the arguments made by the state’s knowledgeable Special Public Prosecutor and the accused’s skilled attorney in this case. The accused were unlawfully converting members of the Scheduled Castes in the village of Shahpur Firoz, Jalalpur Police Station, district Ambedkar, according to the prosecution. The police forms in the file and the prosecution’s examination of the testimony attest to the incident and the accused committed a very serious crime. Therefore, the accused should be convicted,” the court pronounced.

The judge also read out the charges in the hearing. He informed that PW1 Chandrika Prasad stated, “The incident took place on 30.1.2023 at about 1:00 pm. I was informed by Lavkush and another person whose name I do not remember at this time from Gram Sabha Shahpur Firozpur Dalit Basti that in my village, two persons named Jose Pappachan and a woman Sheeja are together converting the people of the Dalit community by luring them in several ways, due to which there is a lot of anger among the people of the village. I immediately informed the Station House Officer (SHO) of Police Station Kotwali Jalalpur by phone who went to the location and arrested the accused on the spot.”

Chandrika Prasad further added that the conversion books were recovered from the accused. He also reached the Dalit Basti and was informed about these people from the locals. “I had registered a case by giving an application in Police Station Kotwali Jalalpur regarding this incident, which is attached in the file and is in my handwriting along with my signature.” He voiced that he works as a social worker for Dalits and added, “The conversion of the Dalit caste has caused mental harm to myself and my community. As a result, the community became enraged and a case was registered against the accused. CO also assessed the area and obtained my statement, based on my indication.”

How the illiterate Dalits were tricked by the convicts

The court then conveyed the statement of PW2 Lavkush who belongs to the Lona Chamar caste which is also part of the SC group. He informed, “I am illiterate. It has been about 6 months since the incident. The time was about one o’clock in the day. Jose Pappachan and Sheeja used to visit my neighbour Viphala’s house once a week. I also used to go to the place. The accused made the villagers to sit through Bible teachings when they visited Viphala’s home two or three times. They used to claim Madhya Pradesh as their home state. They gathered residents of the hamlet and talked about how to teach kids to read and write. They presented Viphala Devi with Bible books in front of me. They offered me church books and invited me to a church in Manguradila. Every member of my community used to come together when the accused called, and they would deliver Bible lessons and spread the gospel.”

Lavkush revealed that on 25th December, the accused and the villagers who were with them used to offer food and sweets to people and cut a cake in commemoration of Jesus Christ’s birthday. He mentioned that the cops arrived at Viphala’s house at around one o’clock when the prayer meeting was in progress and his statement had been taken by the CO. He also recognized the accused after spotting them in the courtroom.

PW3 Viphala, who is also from the Lona Chamar caste is not educated and uses thumb impressions unveiled, “The accused Jose Pappachan and Sheeja, who are residents of Madhya Pradesh, used to come to my house and teach me and other villagers not to drink alcohol and not to fight. They gave me Bible books to read at Manguradila Church. I used to call my neighbours and gather them at my residence. Many people from the village used to come there and I taught them Bible. I told them good things about Jesus Christ and asked them to join his path. 5-6 days before the incident, i.e. on 25th December, we celebrated Jesus Christ’s birthday and cut cakes. They fed cake to me and the villagers. They had also put a picture of Jesus Christ there. The CO had come to my house and questioned me. I had told him the same thing and the officer had recorded my statement.” Her statement was also stated by the court.

PW4 Manju, who is also illiterate and from the same caste, stated that the instance took place around 7 years ago. “At about one o’clock in the day, the accused Jose Pappachan and Sheeja, who are residents of Madhya Pradesh, came to Viphala Devi’s house in my village to propagate Christianity, She used to call me and the villagers to her place. When a lot of people from the village assembled there, the accused would take turns to preach about Jesus Christ and instruct us to worship him as well join his way.”

She added that village children used to attend prayer meetings at Viphala’s house and the accused used to tell them to live together, read and write. They would also offer free notebooks, books and pens. Sheeja and Jose Papachan also gave her a Bible book and instructed her to give it to any literate person in my village or home so he could read it and narrate it to her. They also handed over many books to Viphala, in front of her. She reiterated that they made them sit and listen to the Bible and even celebrated 25th December in the village.

“The accused had organized prayer meetings three times in my village in which people were asked to join Christianity. I told Dr Chandrika, a BJP leader who lives in Jalalpur which is about three kilometers away from my house. I know him. He also belongs to the scheduled caste. He came to my village on the day of the incident after which a case was launched in the Jalalpur police station. I told him that prayer meetings are held at Viphala’s house. The CO had come to my village and recorded my statement,” she added, according to the court document.

Manipulated innocent people and offered money to convert them

Similar witness testimonies of how the couple deceived the people to push them to embrace Christianity were acknowledged by the court. PW5 Suramani was also examined and informed, “I am not educated and there are many like me in my hamlet. The accused used to come to my village, talk to children and visit Bifla’s house regularly. The people of my village also used to go there. They used to tell us about Jesus Christ and teach Bible lessons. They used to organize Bhandaara in my village and used to tell me that Jesus Christ is God. They had given Bible books related to Jesus Christ to Bifla. CO had recorded my statement.”

According to PW6 CP Santosh Kumar, the case was presented at the Jalalpur Police Station under case number 31/2023 following sections 3(5) of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act 2021 and 3 (1) of the SC/ST Act. “As instructed by the Inspector in charge of the Jalalpur Police Station, I filed the case based on the complainant Chandrika Prasad’s accusations,” he added. The original FIR was lodged by him and signed by the police station in-charge inspector Sant Kumar Singh, which he verified.

PW7 CO Devendra Kumar also attested to the same during his examination. Afterwards, he collected the copy report and file and initiated a probe. He also filed papers and recorded the complaint and FIR in the CD. “I examined the scene of the incident at the complaint’s request and created a map with my signature and handwriting on it. I recorded the statements made by Gavadhan Viphala, Malti, Bhagmani, Luvkush, Kalavati, and Roshni on the aforementioned case on the CD. One book, four large diaries, two small diaries, and four calendars have been placed in police custody in connection with the statement I took regarding the matter. Sub Inspector Rampal Saroj of Police Station Jalalpur has prepared a report, which I have reviewed and recorded on a CD,” he highlighted.

One book with the words “Children’s Illustrated Bible” on the first page, and four large diaries with black bindings and the words “Holy Bible” on the first page were recovered. Two of the books were printed with the BSI logo and two small diaries had the words “New Rules Gideons Inter College” and “Pyaar ka Uphaar (Gift of Love)” on them. Furthermore, four calendars were found in Viphala’s home with pictures of Jesus Christ while the other two calendars had photos of his companions, which he recorded on the CD. Inspector-in-Charge of Jalalpur Police Station informed him about the arrest of the accused.

“I reached the police station Jalalpur on the spot and the statement of the accused Jose Pappachan and Sheeja was recorded by me in the CD,” he stated. He also recorded statements of Manju, Suramani, Purnamasi, Anjari, Govinda, Deera, Sahul, and Gyanmati. He then submitted a case against the accused Josh Papachan and Sheeja on the foregoing sections, based on the evidence. Statements of Suresh, Ratilal, Sintu and Sub-Inspector Rampal Saroj had been taken and recorded in the CD by him along with the statements of HC Mohd. Rais and CP Lalit Saroj.

PW8 Anjani mentioned, “I am not educated. I put my thumb impression. This incident is about one year and ten days old. I used to visit my neighbour Viphala’s house one month before the incident. The accused used to come to my village and used to summon many people to Viphala’s house. They preached Bible lessons and gave Bible books to me, Viphala, Roshni, Malti Devi, Deera and others to read. They also taught our kids. They used to tell us including children about Jesus Christ and asked us to worship him.”

“They claimed that he was our God and pushed us to follow him. The accused also gave me Bible books and money. They used to come to my village about five months before the incident and seduced us to join Christianity by offering money. They coaxed my children and me,” she added and revealed that they were trying to convert illiterate people to Christianity by exploiting and luring them. “They had also given me a calendar of Jesus Christ. They arranged a feast on the birthday of Jesus Christ and feed the people of the village,” she pointed out. Her statement was also recorded by the CO.

More coercion and attempts to lure unassuming villagers

Another illiterate person from the SC community, PW9 Roshni stated that the incident took place about one and a half years ago. Viphala lives in her village and used to teach Bible lessons at her house. All the people of the village used to go there and were coerced to convert to Christianity to gain benefit. “The accused used to teach Bible at Viphala’s house and they used to celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ in our village and used to feed the villagers. The accused had given me a photo calendar of Jesus Christ which I then gave to the Jabalpur Police Station Inspector when he reached at the site. The CO recorded my statement,” she informed.

PW10 Bhagmani alias Munni also an uneducated member of the same community conveyed, “It has been almost one and half years since the incident. The accused Jose and Sheeja used to visit their house. They used to hold prayer meetings to worship Jesus Christ. They used to teach us the Bible and gave us diaries to study. The police took all of them from Viphala’s house. I was also given a calendar by the accused which I gave to the police. The CO had recorded my statement.”

Sub-inspector Rampal Saroj was examined as PW11 who revealed, “On 24.01.2023, I, along with constable Lalit Kumar Saroj, head constable Mohd. Rais left from police station Jalalpur and came to the place of incident at Shahpur Ferozepur related to the case.” He also discovered a book with child-friendly illustrations and other aforesaid material regarding Jesus Christ and Christianity. One diary’s print was removed. Pyar Ka Uphaar and Nayaniyam Idioms International were displayed in two separate little diaries. I found four calendars in the custody of Roshni and Viphala from Shahpur village. Two of the calendars had pictures of Jesus Christ and the rest had other images printed on them. He recorded his findings and all the material located there was taken into possession and sealed by him, before the witnesses.

The landmark judgement

The court noted that the trial of the accused was conducted based on the charge sheet sent against them and also read the provisions of the UP Prevention of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act. “In the present case, it has been argued on behalf of the prosecution that the accused were instigating the people of the Dalit community mentioned in the FIR to convert from one religion to another through inducement. The said act of the accused falls under the category of Section-3 of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021,” it observed.

According to the court, it is evident from the statements of all the witnesses the prosecution questioned that the accused, who are from Madhya Pradesh and Kerala, used to travel from there to the villages of Shahpur Firozpur, Thana Jalalpur, and district Ambedkar Nagar to teach the Dalit community about the Bible, Jesus Christ and entice them with money to convert to Christianity. They also distributed books and hosted feasts. The court pointed out that the accused had not explained why they travelled so far to the village given that they do not live there or in the district.

“Thus, from the evidence of the witnesses examined by the prosecution, the crime of instigating the people of the Dalit community to convert to Christianity in a mass illegal manner by luring them has been proved against the accused. As far as the charges levelled against the accused under Section 3(1) of the SC/ST Act are concerned, none of the witnesses examined by the prosecution has stated that the accused abused any person belonging to the Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe in a public place. In such a situation, the offence under the act is not proved against the accused,” the court stated.

Hence, Jose Papachan and Sheeja AMN, the accused are liable to be convicted under Section 5(1) of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021 but are not found not guilty under Section 3(1) of the SC/ST Act in the case. “Sheeja AMN, the accused, is in court and ought to be placed under judicial custody. She is currently out on bond. As a result, the sureties are released from their obligations and the personal bonds are cancelled. She applied on behalf of accused Jose Pappachan, claiming that he was unable to appear in court since he had been admitted to Saint Joseph Hospital in Lucknow because of a prostate condition. Therefore, summons should be issued against the accused Jose Pappachan,” the court conveyed.

It further declared, “Jose Pappachan surrendered in the court and was taken into judicial custody. He is already on bail. His bonds are cancelled and his sureties are discharged from their liabilities.” According to the accused’s learned advocates, the Special Public Prosecutor, and the accused themselves, the two have committed a crime, the court added, however, they have no previous convictions. Jose, one of the elderly accused, is presently receiving treatment for his illness. The least amount of punishment is appropriate, taking into account their circumstances.

“On behalf of the learned Special Public Prosecutor, it was stated that the accused was proven guilty of persuading mass members of the Dalit group to convert to a different religion. The guilty should receive the harshest sentence possible in this case. It has been established that they converted a large number of Dalits by illegally luring them. Therefore, there is a sufficient and legitimate foundation to punish the accused in light of the nature and seriousness of the offence they committed so that the purpose of justice can be fulfilled,” the court stated.

It further directed, “Hence, Jose Pappachan and Sheeja AMN are sentenced to five years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 25,000 each under Section 5(1) UP Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021. In case of non-payment of the penalty, each accused will have to undergo an additional sentence of two months. The period spent by the accused in jail will be adjusted in the sentence as per the rules. A warrant for the accused should be produced.”

Allahabad HC directs the UP government to frame policy to prohibit private practice by government doctors

The Allahabad High Court directed the Uttar Pradesh government on Thursday to frame a policy to prohibit the private practice of doctors posted in the hospitals run by the state government. The direction was given by a bench of Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal during the hearing of a petition filed by Dr Arvind Gupta, professor and head of department at Moti Lal Nehru Medical College, Prayagraj.

During the hearing, Justice Agarwal observed that doctors appointed in government hospitals are referring patients to private hospitals for treatment for money. “It has become a menace that the patients are being referred and dragged to the private nursing homes and hospitals for treatment, and the doctors who are appointed by the State Government either under the Provincial Medical Services or in the Stae Mecial Colleges are not treating and attending the patients in Medical Colleges and Government Hospitals, and just for the money they are being referred to private nursing homes and hospitals,” the Judge noted.

Dr Gupta filed the present petition regarding a complaint filed against him by a patient named Rupesh Chandra Srivastava before the State Consumer Forum for giving him the wrong treatment at a private nursing home.

The High Court asked the state whether the HOD of a government medical college could practice in a private nursing home

When the matter came up for hearing before the court on January 2, the court asked the state counsel to inform the court on the next hearing whether the Head of Department (HoD) and professor at Motilal Nehru College, Prayagrag is entitled to practice in a private nursing home. The court also ordered the state to find out how government doctors were involved in private practice. “It is a serious matter. The State shall also conduct an enquiry as to the Government doctors carrying on private practice in Nursing Homes and Medical shops, who are appointed in different state Medical Colleges, ” the court ordered.

The court further directed that the prohibition on private practice should be extended to all government doctors. “It is further directed that only the doctors, who are appointed in the State Medical Colleges, should comply with the Government Orders of 1983, but also Government should come out with a policy for stopping the private practice of the doctors who are appointed in the Provincial Medical Services and District Hospitals which are situated in the district headquarters throughout the State,” the court said.

The Court asked the Principal Secretary of Medical Health and Education to file a personal affidavit on the implementation of the 1983 rules. It was informed to the court on January 8 that the Principal Secretary had written a letter about 1983 rules, which relate to the private practice of doctors posted in medical colleges, to all the District Magistrates where the State medical colleges are situated. The matter will come up hearing next on February 10.

RBI is banning cash and shifting to digital only transactions from 1 February? Here is the fact about ‘report’ by leading Malayalam newspapers

On Friday morning, people in Kerala were shocked to read a first-page report on newspapers like Malayama Manorama and Mathrubhumi, which declared in the headline, “Goodbye notes; now digital currency”. The ‘report’ claimed that “the Reserve Bank of India has announced that from February 1, all cash transactions in the country will be made entirely through digital currency, completely stopping use of paper currency notes to combat black money.”

It stated that India is following the example of countries like China and Sweden, which have already switched to digital currency only system. It said, “Digital cash transactions are the completion of the ‘Digital India’ project launched by the central government three decades ago.” The news report quoted the Prime Minister as saying that cash transactions will be completely converted to digital currency by withdrawing notes in phases without causing any inconvenience to the public.

The report added that the opportunity to exchange paper currency will be available until February 15. Apart from Manorama and Mathrubhumi, the ‘report’ appeared in several other newspapers in Kerala.

While the report created panic among the readers, the fact is, there is obviously no such announcement by the RBI. And, the ‘report’ published by Malayalam newspapers is not a news report, it is actually an advertisement designed to look like a news report.

Front pages of Mathrubhumi and Malayama Manorama with the ‘report’

The advertisement is for an event titled ‘The Summit of Future 2025’ organized by JAIN (Deemed-to-be University) in Kochi. As per the website of the institution, it will be a 7-day event from 25 January to 1February with the aim to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2025.

In line with the theme of the summit, the advertisement actually featured what a news report may look like in the year 2050. The newspapers added that it is an advertisement, but it was not noticed by many readers.

Not just ordinary readers, even journalist Arun Kumar of Reporter TV, in his review of morning newspapers, was fooled by the ad, and included it in his program today.
