Journalist Rana Ayyub lies, shares a video on Instagram to claim a passenger on-board Shramik train had died of hunger

India is in the midst of a raging coronavirus outbreak as the number of infected continue to soar at an alarming rate. However, even during such difficult times, when an intractable pandemic is sweeping through the country, there exist certain individuals who are unabashedly exploiting the calamity to further their nefarious propaganda against the central government.

Recently, journalist Rana Ayyub took to Instagram to hold the government in the dock for being accountable for the death of the woman, who she claims died because the government did not provide her with food and water on board and the interminable delays caused by the train.

“Trigger alert. She had taken a train from Gujarat. A train that took multiple diversions, served no food onboard. At Muzaffarpur station, she collapsed of hunger and died. Her child here trying to wake his dead mother. How do we sleep at night? This is no death, this is a cold-blooded murder,” Rana Ayyub posted on her Instagram account along with a hard-rending video of a child trying to wake his mother.

The truth of the death of a woman at Muzaffarpur station

In her Instagram post, Ayyub claimed that the woman “collapsed” on the Muzaffarpur railway station and died of starvation. However, the truth about the passing away of the concerned woman starkly contrasts with her figment of the imagination. According to the sources in the Railways Ministry, the woman, who was travelling with her sister, husband and two children, was suffering from a prolonged illness and had died in the train during the journey.

The Railway sources further said that the Inspector-in-Charge of Railway Protection Force and Deputy SP Headquarters GRP Muzaffarpur, Mr Ramakant Upadhyay were informed about the death of the woman in the train and after securing permission from station in-charge, the body of the deceased was disembarked at the Muzaffarpur railway station and was subsequently examined by the Muzaffarpur Railway Division doctor.

The woman was suffering from prior ailments but Ayyub not only falsely claimed that the woman died of hunger, but she also weaved an imaginary story that the woman crumpled on the Muzaffarpur station before dying. Rana’s assertion that the woman died of hunger also doesn’t hold water as Indian Railways has clarified multiple times over that passengers on-board Shramik trains are provided with food, water and proper medical assistance.

Despite multiple clarifications, a certain section of the media is working overtime to prove that the government is negligent.

Railways calls out misleading reports that claim lack of food and water on Shramik Trains

Indian Railways has called out the misleading reports that are attributing deaths due to prior ailments to negligence by the railways. On Wednesday, May 27, 2020, Jagran published news claiming that four people died on Shramik Express due to negligence. The report states that the migrant workers onboard Shramik Express have been deprived of food and water and cast aspersions that some of the migrants who died on these trains died due to lack of basic food and water.

However, the Indian Railways took to Twitter to rubbish the misinformation being spread regards to deaths on-board. Indian Railways asserted that medical assistance is provided to every passenger in case of emergencies. Moreover, food and water are provided on the Shramik Express trains for all passengers.

On Tuesday, Indian Railways had rebutted Dainik Bhaskar report which had claimed that lack of food and water on Shramik Express trains is leading to death of migrant workers. In its report, Bhaskar chalks up deaths of passengers to negligence observed by the railways. However, the Indian Railways categorically rejected the assertions made in the Bhaskar report, claiming that the cause of death of others onboard cannot be ascertained till the postmortem reports are out. One of the dead, a 4 year old Mohammad Irshad, had passed away while boarding the train from Muzaffarpur to Betiya. The Railways clarified that the child was ill and was returning from Delhi after treatment.

1100-year-old monolithic sandstone Shivling unearthed in Vietnam’s Cham temple complex in My Son Sanctuary

The Archaeological Survey of India on Wednesday unearthed an 1100-year-old monolithic sandstone Shivling during its conservation project at Vietnam’s Cham temple complex in My Son Sanctuary. The structure dates back to the 9th century.

India’s External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar who shared the news on Twitter termed it as ‘Reaffirming a civilisational connect’. He applauded the Archeological Survey of India for its efforts.

The 9th-century fully intact Shivling is part of a complex of Hindu temples which were constructed by the Champa Empire between 4th century CE and 13th century CE in My Son sanctuary, in Quảng Nam province, central Vietnam.

The Minister of External Affairs added that the excavation was a part of a recent conservation project where India’s ASI is also involved. It is notable here that India has been helping several South-East Asian nations in preservation and restoration works of ancient sites.

President Ramnath Kovind had visited the My Son sanctuary in 2018 and had informed that ASI is helping in the preservation works in the ancient Hindu site.

My Son sanctuary, Vietnam

My Son sanctuary in Vietnam is a designated UNESCO world heritage centre and a home to a cluster of Hindu temples built over 10 centuries. The temples there are dedicated to Lord Shiva, known under various local names, the most important of which is Bhadreshvara.

The UNESCO site describes the ancient complex as follows: “Between the 4th and 13th centuries, a unique culture which owed its spiritual origins to Indian Hinduism developed on the coast of contemporary Viet Nam. This is graphically illustrated by the remains of a series of impressive tower-temples located in a dramatic site that was the religious and political capital of the Champa Kingdom for most of its existence.”

Nepal PM faces setback as his proposed constitutional amendment to adopt new map incorporating Indian territories delayed by political parties

The discussions to amend the constitution for updating the country’s map have been held back as political parties in Nepal have sought national consensus on the matter.

Nepal PM KP Oli aggressively pushed the constitutional amendment to update Nepal’s map. But, he couldn’t muster consensus from the political rivals who saw through his efforts to invoke nationalistic fervour against India. The government had floated an amendment proposal on May 22 after releasing the controversial map that showed Indian territories of Kalapani, Limpiyadhura and Lipulekh in Nepal. The map was allegedly released after India inaugurated its road via Lipulekh to Kailash Mansarovar in Tibet.

The release of the new map triggered a stern response from India, describing the unveiling of a new political map with Indian areas as Nepali territory as an “unjustified cartographic assertion” that is unacceptable to her. Condemning Nepal’s actions, MEA spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said, “The Government of Nepal has released a revised official map of Nepal today that includes parts of Indian territory. This unilateral action is not based on historical facts and evidence.”

The constitutional amendment was initially planned to be tabled on Tuesday. However, a leader claimed that it could not be tabled on Tuesday as the prime minister was keen on holding an all-party meet to discuss the issue. A constitutional amendment requires a two-thirds majority vote and therefore Oli had convened a meeting of all political parties on Tuesday.

Though the incumbent Nepal Communist Party holds a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly, it still needs backing from other political parties to get the proposal passed through the Lower House, as it lacks the required majority by 10 seats.

However, Nepal PM KP Oli’s plan to forge a national consensus seemed to fall apart as the principal opposition party—Nepali Congress claimed that it could not take a definitive stand on the matter until it is decided upon by the Central Working Committee after deliberating within the party.

“Our support is for the territorial integrity of the country and we also back government’s release of the map,” Krishna Prasad Situala, a Nepali Congress leader said. However, he added, “The decision on the amendment to update the map will be taken at the upcoming Central Working Committee meeting. So we requested that the amendment be put on hold for the time being.”

Two other opposition parties, the Samajbadi Party Nepal and the Rastriya Janata Party Nepal have also demanded that their calls for amendments to the constitution also should be incorporated in the proposed amendment.

Communist Party of Nepal’s aggression against India

Earlier this month, KP Oli also made expansionist claims in a speech in the parliament where he asserted that Nepal would “bring back at any cost” the Indian territories of Kalapani-Limpiyadhura-Lipulekh area. Nepal’s newfound belligerence against India partly stems from Beijing, which considers New Delhi as a threat to its global ambitions. Many attribute Nepal’s bellicosity against India to China who is rapidly expanding its footprint in the communist-ruled Kathmandu.

It is also worth noting that Nepal’s defiance against India has come 10 days after the Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated a link road on the Kailash Mansarovar route in Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand, leading to Lipulekh.

The foreign ministry of Nepal had issued a press release voicing their protest against the move, claiming the link road passed through Nepali territory. However, India rejected the claims, saying “the link road lies completely within the territory of India”

India claims that the link road follows the pre-existing road that was used by the pilgrims to visit Kailash Mansarovar. “Under the recent project, the same road has been made more robust for the ease and convenience of the pilgrims,” an official said.

‘We are shocked at the brazen and desperate strong-arm tactics of the State Home Minister’, Republic TV accuses Maharashtra govt of vendetta

Reacting to the series of threats and intimidation by the Maharashtra government, the Republic Media Network has issued a statement regarding the re-opening of old cases filed against the media network.

In a press release, the Republic TV network said that there were shocked at the brazen and desperate attempt by the Maharashtra government to target them after they did a series of programmes exposing the mess in Maharashtra regarding the coronavirus situation.

“We are shocked at the brazen and desperate strong-arm tactics of the State Home Minister,” said the media network in a press release.

The Republic TV also accused the Maharashtra government of re-opening cases against the media house after it exposed fake claims made by the Maharashtra government regarding the unavailability of trains.

The media network also said that the Maharashtra Home Minister has resorted to desperation after the media network highlighted his failure to investigate the Palghar lynching case and also his alleged close links with Yes Bank-DHFL scam accused Wadhwans.

Continuing its vendetta against the Editor-in-Chief of the Republic TV, Arnab Goswami, the Maharashtra government has dredged up an old case from 2018 and ordered a CID investigation into it. The case is related to alleged non-payment of dues by the Republic TV which allegedly forced two people to commit suicide in May 2018. Clarifying its position on the case, Republic TV stated that an inquiry was carried out and was closed by the court of law as no case was made out. Republic states that Akshata Naik was unable to provide any proof to back the allegations. Republic TV further stated that 90% of the dues were cleared and remaining were to be paid on completion of work.

“Despite multiple meetings, emails, letters and WhatsApp messages reaching out to CDPL (Anvay Naik’s company), Mrs Akshata Naik and Ms Adnya Naik regarding ARG Outlier Media Ltd’s willingness to ensure a full and final settlement, no concrete response has been received,” the statement says. Republic further alleges fabrication of facts.

Despite this, a CID investigation has been ordered by the Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh in a case which was already closed by a court after investigation. Republic TV was served notice to appear for interrogation at a time when Maharashtra is struggling to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

Maharashtra Home Minister himself had taken to Twitter to threaten Republic TV and bully its editor Arnab Goswami by stating that a CID probe has been ordered against Republic TV network based on a complaint filed by one Adnya Naik for the alleged non-payment of dues leading to her father and grandmother committing suicide in May 2018.

Continuous harassment to Republic TV by Maharashtra government

Addition to the above, the Maharashtra government has also begun a new criminal investigation against the network and its chief Arnab Goswami. Fresh interrogation papers were also served to Republic TV for being critical against Maha Vikas Aghadi’s bungled response to the coronavirus outbreak in the state.

The interrogation papers sent to the Republic TV is in connection with its coverage of the chaos in Bandra where a legion of migrant workers had congregated in gross violation of the lockdown restrictions and social distancing norms, presumably for returning to their native places.

Arnab Goswami being hounded by Maharashtra Police

Arnab Goswami has been hounded by the Congress party for weeks now after he referred to their interim President-Sonia Gandhi with her maiden name “Antonio Maino” on his show on Republic TV and questioned her silence on the brutal lynching of the Hindu sadhus in Palghar.

Congress party filed multiple FIRs in multiple places in their attempt to hound Arnab Goswami and the Maharashtra police, which is now under the alliance government of Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP questioned Arnab for over 12 hours. If that was not enough. the police then questioned the group CFO of Republic TV as well. And before the state machinery descended on Arnab, two Congress goons had attacked him and his wife while they were on their way home from the Republic TV studio. The police, in turn, refused to even add Congress’ name in the complaint lodged by Arnab Goswami.

US President Trump offers to mediate between India and China in border standoff

US President Donald Trump has stated that he is ready to mediate between India and China over their ongoing military standoff in the Ladakh region. Trump has tweeted saying that the USA has conveyed it to both India and China.

Trump stated that the USA has informed both India and China that it is “ready, willing and able to mediate or arbitrate their now raging border dispute”.

India-China military standoff

India and China are currently engaged in a military standoff in the Galwan Valley region of Ladakh, near the Line of Actual Control between India and China. It is notable here that vast areas of Ladakh region have been under Chinese control for decades.

In the Galwan flashpoint, it was initially reported that China had started moving heavy equipment and troops in the LAC, and had increased patrols in the area creating skirmishes between Indian and Chinese troops.

As a result, India too has mobilised troops and aircraft in the region. In 2017, India and China had engaged in a similar standoff in the Doklam region near the Bhutan border.

Trump and his mediation proposals

US President Donald Trump has, in the past, made similar proposals over the disputes between India and Pakistan too. The proposals were promptly dismissed by India. It is notable here that India’s stand regarding border conflicts with neighbouring nations has always been that the issues are to be resolved bilaterally, without the intervention of third parties.

Opposition parties choose politics over human life, states run by them have approved far less Shramik Special Trains compared to NDA run states

While the opposition parties, particularly the Congress party, has been the most vocal on the migrant issue during the Lockdown, data shows that states run by Congress and other opposition parties are lagging behind other states in running Shramik Special Trains to bring migrants home.

In the last couple of days, it was already revealed how the Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress run Maharashtra govt failed to arrange migrants to send back from the state, after requesting trains which were arranged by the Indian Railways. On 25th, the Central Railway had arranged 125 trains from Maharashtra to different states, but the Maharashtra govt submitted details of passengers for only 46 trains. Even in this 46, 5 were for West Bengal and Odisha, two states which have requested not to send trains due to Cyclone Amphan. Accordingly, Railways had arranged 41 trains, but only 39 could be run as the administration failed to bring the passengers to the stations.

Similarly, on 26th May, the Central Railway had arranged 145 trains to be run from Maharashtra as per requirement submitted by nodal officers, but only 75 trains could be run by 12 AM midnight due to lack of passengers. While 25 trains were scheduled to run before 12 PM, none of them could run as there was no passenger. By 3 PM, 13 trains had left Maharashtra against planned 50 trains scheduled till that time. Maharashtra failed to arrange passengers for trains arranged by the Railways after alleging that they were not getting adequate trains. They had said that they are only getting half the trains requested per day, but the facts given by the Railways show the complete opposite picture. While Railways is arranging trains as requested by the state govt, the Maharashtra govt has been unable to arrange migrants to send home.

It is not that only Maharashtra is lacking in cooperation in movement of migrants. Several other states have also failed to give approval to receive trains sent from other states. It may be noted that the Shramik Special Trains run to move migrants are run on the basis of mutual cooperation of origin and destination states. Both the states have to agree to run the trains, only after that the Railways arranges and operates the trains.

Railways has run 3,543 Shramik Special Trains till now, and has transported more than 44 lakhs stranded migrants to their home States. Just a couple of days back, Indian Railways took a major decision to operationalise 2,600 more Shramik Special Trains in next ten days across the country. This initiative is expected to benefit another 36 lakh stranded passengers across the country. The preparations for this exercise have been done on a war-footing, and Indian Railways is planning to operationalise trains from 700 districts.

But several states are not cooperating with Railways and other states in this operation. According to Railway ministry sources, West Bengal, a state which sends a large number of workers to other states, has given approval for only 60 trains. This can cater to a very small fraction of people wanting to go back to the state. Further, they have now stopped receiving trains in the name of cyclone Amphan. Similarly, Chhattisgarh has given approval for only 53 trains, Rajasthan for 46 trains, and Jharkhand for 177 trains. Just to put this in perspective, Uttar Pradesh has given approval to 1,548 trains and Bihar has given approval to 1,307 trains till date, this just shows how there is a huge difference in states in approving the trains. A source in Railways says that “only if the states like West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, and Jharkhand stop being callous and show some compassion, better help can be extended to the stranded migrants”.

A Railway Ministry official said, “leaders like Sonia Gandhi and Mamata Banerjee are responsible for the poor state of affairs of stranded migrants. All they had to do was to cooperate with Indian Railways in bringing the migrants back home. It is sad to see that they chose politics over human life.”

Earlier also union railway minister Piyush Goyal had informed that several states such as West Bengal, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, were not giving enough permissions for Shramik Special Trains’ to enter their states. And the same trend continues even now, while the opposition parties continue to attack the Modi government over the migrant issue. If the states don’t give the required approval, the plan to tun 2600 additional trains will also not succeed.

Ancient Roman mosaic of a villa unearthed at a Vineyard in Northern Italy

A entirely intact Roman mosaic floor of an ancient villa has been discovered under a vineyard in northern Italy, reports BBC.

The surveyors in the commune of Negrar di Valpolicella, which is in the north of Verona, have unearthed mosaic floor recently and also published images of the well-preserved tiles buried beneath the earth.

The images, which have become viral on social media, show how the mosaics are intact for centuries. The foundations of the villa can also be seen.

According to officials, few scholars had found evidence of a Roman villa at the site more than a century ago. The surveyors are now excavating the site to unearth remaining architecture of the ancient building.

The commune of Negrar di Valpolicella, in its website, has reportedly said that diggers finally made the discovery “after decades of failed attempts”.

The surveyors will now act as a liaise with the owners of the vineyard, where the structure has been unearthed and the municipality to identify the most appropriate ways to unearth the archaeological treasure.

The local authorities have also pledged to give “all necessary help” to continue with the excavation as technicians, excavators need “significant resources” to unearth the villa.
