Columbia Asia faces a case of medical negligence after allegedly giving wrong blood to a pregnant woman

One of the premium medical institutions in Kolkata, Columbia Asia Hospital is facing a case of medical negligence. The family of a patient accused the hospital staff of infusing blood of a wrong group during surgery, following which Baishaki Saha, the patient, has been on ventilation since 5th June.

Saha complained of severe stomach ache and consulted a gastroenterologist. There she was advised to consult a gynaecologist. She was three weeks pregnant at that point in time. The gynaecologist informed her husband that she is suffering from fallopian tube leak and needed a surgery.

Her husband, talking to a news organization, detailed the ordeal affected by the family he said that she spoke to him normally before she was wheeled into the operation theatre on 5th June. The doctors stated that his wife’s operation was successful but she needs blood. He is sure that despite his wife having A + blood group, she was administered blood of a different group. The doctors allegedly admitted the wrongdoing in front of the husband and within hours, the woman slipped into a coma.

The hospital, however, denied any charge and stated that all claims made by the family were incorrect. The hospital in a statement stated that after the completion of the surgery and the blood transfusion, the condition of the 31-year old complicated. There is a specialist team of doctors who are ‘aggressively’ treating the woman. The patient has also shown signs of gradual improvement and likely to be weaned off the ventilator in the next 24 hours.
