No Confidence Motion defeated by voice vote after opposition MPs walk out, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury suspended from the house

The No Confidence Motion brought by the opposition parties in the Parliament was defeated today after Prime Minister Narendra Modi replied to the motion. Although the result of the motion was already known as the Modi government does not face any challenge in terms of numbers, at the time of the voting, only treasury bench MPs were present in the house.

After three days of debate following the tabling of the motion by Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, the opposition MPs walked out when PM Modi was speaking. They didn’t wait for the PM’s speech to conclude or to participate in the voting on the motion.

After the PM concluded his speech, speaker Om Birla invited Gaurav Gogoi to deliver his concluding remarks as the mover of the motion. But there was no response, as the MP from Assam was not present in the house. After calling his name several times, the speaker put the motion for voting, and it was easily defeated by a voice vote.

Following the voting, speaker Om Birla expressed unhappiness over the conduct of Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and BJP MP Virendra Singh Mast, saying their behaviours were not parliamentary. Responding to the remark, Mast apologised for causing interruptions during the debate, saying that he could not tolerate the insult of his leader.

Following this, the speaker asked parliamentary affairs minister Pralhad Joshi on the matter. The minister said that Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the leader of the Congress party in the house, interrupted the speeches of PM Modi and other members of the treasury bench. He said that it has become the habit of Chowdhury to interrupt others, and he repeatedly makes false allegations.

As a result, Pralhad Joshi passed a motion to suspend Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury from Lok Sabha for the rest of the session. He said that for ‘gross, deliberate, and repeated misconduct of Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury in utter disregard to the house and the authority of the chair’, the matter of misconduct of Chowdhury should be referred to the committee of the privileges of the house for further investigation, and he should be suspended from the house till the committee suspends its report.

The motion was passed by voice vote, which means the leader of the Congress party in Lok Sabha has been suspended from the house.

On Wednesday, August 9, the Nagaur police in Rajasthan, informed that it has arrested a money lender identified as Mehrdeen for allegedly raping and blackmailing a married woman in his neighbourhood.

The action was taken based on a complaint filed by the woman on August 7 at Nagaur police station wherein she alleged that Mehrbeen raped her once five months ago and then later once in Jodhpur. He committed the heinous crime on the pretext of the loan he had given her a few months ago for her husband’s medical treatment.

The woman said in the complaint that she had taken Rs 10,000 as a loan from the accused Mehrbeen for the treatment of her ailing husband, who was suffering from paralysis. She had returned Rs 5000 to Mehrbeen and was continuing to return the remaining Rs 5000 in monthly instalments of Rs 500.

One day, Mehrbeen approached the woman and demanded that she paid him interest on the loan she had taken. He asked her to give him Rs 10 for every hundred rupees she had taken as a loan. From that day onwards, the accused started regularly threatening her to repay the interest amount.

One day, when the victim’s husband was away for some work, Mehrbeen barged into her house and raped her for not being able to repay the interest. He also filmed the act and started using it to blackmail her.

A few days later, the accused forced the victim to accompany him to Jodhpur by threatening her with the video he made the previous time. In Jodhpur, the accused again raped her and also filmed the act. This time, Mehrbeen went a step ahead and leaked the video on social media.

After the video went viral, the victim attempted to commit suicide by jumping into a pond but she was saved by some locals present there. The villagers informed the local police about the incident, who in turn reached the spot and launched a probe into the case. The victim reached the police station on August 7 and filed a complaint against the accused.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday tore into the Congress party for the abusive and unparliamentary language they use against him and his government. Addressing the Lok Sabha in response to the Opposition’s no-confidence motion against the NDA government, Modi took a jibe at the opposition parties saying that “Modi teri kabar khudegi’ is their favourite slogan.

Referring to the insults and slurs hurled at him over the past three days, Modi said that the opposition has a collection of the choicest of slang, insults, and slurs reserved just for him. He stated that the opposing parties’ behaviour is driven by a pattern, and they probably scan the dictionary on a daily basis to choose the most abusive and degrading insults to use against me.

“The opposition frequently continues to call me names. I am aware that they are obliged to do so by habit. I have no idea where they get the abhorrent language to use against me. They’re constantly looking through the dictionary, I believe, to find such unparliamentary words,” PM Modi said, adding, “I feel happy that by cursing me at least they get their peace of mind.”

Continuing to mock the grand old party, Modi added that the opposition party’s current favourite among all the derogatory and obscene phrases and jargon for me is “Modi teri kabar khudegi” (Modi, your grave would be dug), but I always turn it into a tonic,” Prime Minister Modi quipped.

Notably, this is not the first time that PM Modi has mocked the grand old party for raising the slogan ‘Modi teri kabar khudegi’ (Modi, your grave would be dug). In March this year, addressing a public rally at the inauguration event of the Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway in Mandya, PM Modi said, “Before 2014, the Congress government at the Centre left no stone unturned to ruin poor people. Congress government looted the money which was for poor people.” Taking a dig at Congress for raising the slogan ‘Modi teri kabar khudegi’ (Modi, your grave would be dug), the Prime Minister said Congress is dreaming of digging Modi’s grave’ while Modi is busy in building Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway and easing the lives of poor. 

“Congress is dreaming of ‘digging Modi’s grave’ but they don’t know that blessings of mothers, sisters and people of the country work as protection shield for me. They (Congress) leaders are busy dreaming of ‘digging Modi’s grave’ while I’m is busy in building Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway and improving the lives of poor,” PM Modi said. 

Notably, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP government has served for eight years, and with each passing year, attacks on the Prime Minister and his party from the leftist brigade in India and abroad as well as the rattled members of the opposition parties have only gotten worse. In reality, since Prime Minister Modi took office, members of the opposition, particularly those from the Congress, have frequently used such theatrics to berate the current administration.

‘Modi teri kabar khudegi’ slogan used by opposition in the past

On Friday, 28th April 2023, ‘Modi Teri Kabar Khudegi’ slogans were raised at the wrestlers’ protests at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. India’s ace wrestlers including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, and Sakshi Malik are protesting at Jantar Mantar in Delhi against Wrestling Federation of India’s president and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. 

On 23rd February 2023, Pawan Khera and other Congress leaders raised slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying “Modi Teri Kabar Khudegi”. the opponents of the BJP government in the centre and various states have often used the phrase of burying somebody while registering their so-called protests. Many other Islamists have also raised slogans to bury Hindutva in the past few years, especially during the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act in 2019 and 2020.

A complaint was lodged with the Aligarh police station regarding certain slogans that were chanted against Uttar Pradesh’s chief minister Yogi Adityanath at Aligarh Muslim University. The shocking slogan in the protest in AMU was ‘Yogi teri kabar khudegi, AMU ki dharti par’ meaning “Yogi, you will be buried in the AMU’s soil”. Similarly, AMU students had raised slogans during the anti-CAA protests saying Hindutva, Savarkar, etc. will be buried in AMU.

On Wednesday, August 9, the Madhya Pradesh Police filed a complaint under SC/ST act against one individual identified as Maulana Shadab Khan for abusing sanitation workers in the city of Indore. Khan released a video claiming that the sanitation workers looked at the Muslim women inappropriately in the Chanan Nagar area of the city.

In the video that went viral over the internet, Maulana could be heard saying, “Now we won’t allow our daughters, sisters, and wives to throw the garbage into the sanitation van. We pay due taxes and also extra garbage tax. We’ll throw more Rs 60 per/month (Rs 2 per day) on the face of the sanitation workers but they only will have to pick up the garbage.”

Stating the reason behind this declaration, Maulana said, “I have seen when ladies from our community raise their hands to throw the garbage into the van, their clothes also rise from the waist and these sanitation workers shamelessly watch the ladies in that condition.”

The sanitation workers after the video incident got enraged and demanded strict punishment against the Maulana. They gathered in large numbers in the Chandan Nagar area of the city and protested against the Maulana demanding strict action against him. They also didn’t pick up the garbage from the area for two days.

After this, the Maulana happened to apologize to the sanitation workers who belong to the Valmiki community. However, the latter demanded strict action and said that the house of the Maulana should be demolished.

They mentioned their community sentiments had been hurt and that they are not in need of money, but respect. “He is talking about Rs 60, we can individually throw Rs 60,000 on his face. His house should be bulldozed,” the sanitation workers added.

Valmiki Samaj has now filed FIR against the Maulana and booked him under relevant sections of the law.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his address with his much-awaited response to the no-confidence motion in the Parliament. He drew the cricket analogy while taking a dig at the Opposition’s conduct while moving the no-confidence motion against the Modi government.

“Respected Speaker, when you (the Opposition) finally let the Session run, you (the Opposition) assembled only for the no-trust vote that to bound by the conditions applied by your ‘kattar bhrasht’ colleagues,” PM Modi said in a dig at the Opposition alliance, I.N.D.I.A.

Further, taking a jibe at the Congress loyalists, he said, “What kind of discussion did you hold on the no-confidence motion? I have been seeing that your ‘darbaris’ (courtiers) on social media are also disappointed. Such is your condition.” PM Modi’s veiled attack, or not so veiled really, was against the Congress loyalist media persons like Rajdeep Sardesai, Arfa Khanum Sherwani, Tanushree Pandey, Yogendra Yadav, and Ravish Kumar, and many more who have peddled Congress propaganda and parallelly spread Hindu hate.

PM Modi then began to draw the cricket analogy saying that the fielding was organised by the Opposition but the fours and sixes were hit from here (Treasury benches). “And the Opposition kept moving with no ball after no ball. Centuries are being hit from here (Treasury benches) and no balls are being delivered from there (Opposition),” Modi said with a grin.

He mocked the Opposition saying why don’t you work hard? “You should work a little bit harder. I told you back in 2018 that do come back (in power) in 2023. But you couldn’t even work hard for five years. Such is your condition, such adversity you are in,” PM Modi said amid loud laughter from the MPs of the ruling party.

Trinamool Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP from Krishnanagar Mahua Moitra used the opportunity to address the lower house of the parliament in her vitriol against the majority community of the country. She expressed her contempt and hatred for the prime minister’s display of respect to the Adheenam seers during their visit to New Delhi to deliver the Sengol which was placed near the chair of the speaker of the lower house.

She alleged, “India has lost confidence in you. The spectacle of the prime minister of the greatest democracy bowing to the religious seers of a majority in the chamber of the new parliament fills us with shame,” in her symbolically shrill tone amidst the ruckus in the house.

However, the lawmaker’s attack on the prime minister and Hindu traditions didn’t get unanswered and Bharatiya Janata Party Hooghly MP Locket Chatterjee responded to her vicious rant. She replied, “The people who committed atrocities against women after the West Bengal Panchayat polls talk about democracy. 59 party workers died in this year’s Panchayat polls. Since West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has been in power there have been atrocities against women in the state.”

She also called out the opposition’s hypocrisy and further added, “To create their image, they are asking why is PM Modi silent on the Manipur issue. The opposition is silent on the Rajasthan, West Bengal, and Chhattisgarh incidents and is talking about Manipur.”

Notably, Mahua Moitra is notorious for her unparliamentary behaviour and her relentless support for anti-Hindu elements and things. She made controversial remarks about Goddess Kali while speaking at India Today Conclave East 2022 on 5 July. She mentioned that the latter was a meat-eating and alcohol-accepting deity for her. Her disrespectful views angered many Hindus and resulted in a First Information Report against her.

Her statement came in support of alleged filmmaker Leena Manimekalai’s documentary “Kaali” after a controversy erupted over the film poster which depicted a woman dressed in a costume portraying the goddess while smoking a cigarette. A flag of the LGBTQ+ community was also visible in the background.

A complaint was made against her in May of last year for disrespecting Lord Shiva in the wake of the discovery of a shivling at the contentious Gyanvapi mosque structure. She had posted a photo of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre along with the sarcastic caption, “Hope Bhabha Atomic Research Centre is not on the digging list.”

Violence in West Bengal

There is a long history of brutal violence against opposition leaders and workers, especially Hindus in Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee’s TMC ruled West Bengal, but Mahua Moitra, who is otherwise one of the most vocal leaders in the party has never found the time or the gumption to speak against the atrocities perpetuated by her own party people.

At least 48 people lost their lives and multiple received grave injuries during the recently concluded panchayat polls in the eastern state. The Calcutta High Court ordered the retention of central forces in the state for at least 10 days after the announcement of the election results last month to prevent post-poll clashes. Over 800 companies of central forces were deployed in the state to maintain peace.

Two years back, in 2012, after the party supremo and incumbent chief minister gave the slogan of “Khela Hobe” (Will Play) during the assembly elections in the state, the party cadres unleashed a blood-bath and made an absolute mockery of law and order.

West Bengal experienced unprecedented instability and carnage during which several BJP activists were assaulted, threatened, and killed by Trinamool Congress goons in celebration of their victory in the polls. They didn’t even spare the women. Multiple cases of rape, atrocity and molestations were reported in the state.

The situation escalated to such a startling point that BJP workers decided to flee from their homes in an attempt to escape the violence and moved to Assam to save their life and honor. They were provided with food and shelter in the neighboring state.

The convoy of opposition leaders especially those from the BJP were attacked with stones and attempts were made to torch their vehicles. According to a home ministry inquiry into political violence in West Bengal, there were 693 occurrences and 11 fatalities during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, as well as 23 fatalities on election day and the night before in the 2018 panchayat elections.

Following in the footsteps of the left-wing parties, TMC has incorporated violence into its strategy to win elections. Mahua Moitra has never spoken out against the wrongdoings of her own party, but she grabs every chance to discredit the BJP and the Hindus of the country under the garb of democracy and secularism.

On Thursday, August 10, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke in response to the no-confidence motion introduced by the opposition in the Parliament. PM Modi was speaking in Lok Sabha in response to the opposition’s no-confidence motion. During his speech, PM Modi asked why the leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, wasn’t allowed to speak.

Taking a dig at the opposition’s decision not to allow Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury to speak during the debate, PM Modi asked, “Why did Congress sideline Adhir Chowdhury? Was there a call from Bengal?”

PM Modi asked why ‘Adhir babu’ was ignored, and he mentioned that Congress keeps insulting him. However, he expressed his full support to Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury even though his parent party insults him.

Notably, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has been very vocal against the TMC government in Bengal in general and Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee in particular. However, recently, Congress and TMC have come together as part of the I.N.D.I.A. alliance to take on Narendra Modi and the BJP.

PM Modi’s comment was directed towards the newly formed I.N.D.I.A. alliance where Congress and Trinamool Congress from Bengal are allies.

On 22nd July, Congress’s party floor leader in Lok Sabha and Bengal Congress President Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury launched an attack on Trinamool Congress (TMC) led by Mamata Banerjee. Speaking at a press conference, Chowdhury said, “She (Mamata) came to power in 2011 with the help of the Congress. Then she denied that. The people of the state have become disillusioned with Mamata Banerjee now. So, she felt that she should now join hands with Congress… The Trinamool now desperately needs the Congress.”

Chowdhury added, “Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra united the entire country. Rahul Gandhi’s leadership is a clear sign of change in India as a whole. The TMC realised that if they did not join with the politics of Rahul Gandhi, then the party would split.”

On 10th August 2023, BJP MP Colonel Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore addressed the Lok Sabha during the ongoing monsoon session of the parliament. The 2008 Olympic medalist was answering the no-confidence motion moved by the opposition. Colonel Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore said that when he along with other players was participating in Beijing Olympics Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi were busy meeting with leaders of the Communist Party of China.

Colonel Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore said, “I was at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in China. We came to know that Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi are coming to meet us, but they did not actually come to meet us nor did they meet us. Their plates were being served by the Communist Party of China. They met the Communist Party of China. They used to run a government on the remote control. If a soldier attempts anything of this sort, he is tried in a sedition case. They (Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi) were running the government at that time. They should be tried for treason.”

On 7th August 2008, an agreement was made between the Sonia Gandhi-led Congress Party and the Communist Party of China (CPC).

During UPA1 in 2008, the Congress Party and the Communist Party of China (CPC) signed a deal in Beijing for exchanging high-level information and co-operation between them. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) also provided the two parties with the “opportunity to consult each other on important bilateral, regional and international developments”.

Interestingly, the MoU was signed by the then Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi and on the Chinese side, it was signed by none other than Xi Jinping himself, who was then the Chinese vice-president and standing committee member of the CPC’s politburo. The MoU was signed in the presence of his mother and party president Sonia Gandhi.

Before the signing of the MoU, then Congress President Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi had held a long meeting with Xi and other senior leaders of the Communist Party of China to discuss issues of mutual interest.

In 2008, Sonia Gandhi visited Beijing along with Rahul, daughter Priyanka, son-in-law Robert Vadra and their two children to attend the opening of the Olympic Games. A year before, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi had also led a delegation of the Congress party to China.

The 2008 MoU between CCP and Congress came at a time when the Left parties in India had expressed a lack of trust in the UPA-1 government led by Congress. The India Today report suggests that even as China was aware of the political landscape in India, Xi Jinping went ahead and signed the pact with Congress as CCP wanted deeper ties with Congress, especially with the Gandhi family.

Arvind Netam, a senior leader from Tribal background, has submitted his resignation from the Congress party’s primary membership, signaling a significant political event ahead of the next assembly elections in Chhattisgarh.

The action comes as a brand-new political force, led by the Sarva Adivasi Samaj, is preparing to jump into action and participate in the November assembly elections.

When asked about the reason for his resignation, Netam told the media, “There are several reasons, including the neglect of tribal communities under the current Congress government in Chhattisgarh. Diluting the PESA rules is a prime example of how the Congress government is least interested in protecting the rights of tribal communities.”

Former Union minister and well-known tribal leader Arvind Netam has a long history of affiliation with the Congress party and has been instrumental in advancing the concerns of tribal groups. The new party, led by the Sarva Adivasi Samaj, claims to provide tribal populations with a forum to express their issues and goals.

Its leaders contend that the Congress and the BJP, as well as other major parties, have failed to address a number of issues, such as protecting “Jal, Jungle, and Jameen” (water, forest, and land), and putting the Panchayat Extension in Scheduled Areas (PESA) Act into action.

The former Union minister, who served in the PV Narasimha Rao and Indira Gandhi administrations at the Union Cabinet level, has already started the process of forming a new political organization. Netam, a member of the Sarva Adivasi Samaj, had previously stated that the new party would put up candidates for at least 50 assembly seats in the forthcoming elections for the 90-member state legislative assembly.

The Chhattisgarh Sarva Adivasi Samaj fielded its own candidate, Akbar Pam Korram, in the by-election for the Bhandupratappur (ST) assembly seat in December of the previous year, and he received more than 23,000 votes.

Madhya Pradesh: Statue of Maharana Pratap vandalised in Morena, FIR registered

 A statue of Maharana Pratap was vandalized by three unidentified persons in Madhya Pradesh’s Morena district and the police registered an FIR into the matter, a police official said on Thursday.

The incident occurred near Purani Sabji Mandi, Kailaras locality in the district at around 11:30 pm on Wednesday. The incident has been captured in the CCTV camera installed near the spot.

On getting the information about the matter the police reached the spot and got the statue repaired in the night itself. Nonetheless, local people are in fury and they demand immediate arrest of the accused.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP, Morena), Arvind Thakur said, “A statue of Maharana Pratap was installed near Purani Sabji Mandi in Kailaras locality in the district which was vandalised by three known persons last night between 11:30 pm to 12 am. The Police registered an FIR against 3 unknown people in the matter.”

The whole incident was captured in a CCTV camera. The police will identify the accused on the basis of CCTV footage and will arrest them soon, Thakur said.

When asked about there is a lot of resentment among the local people, Additional SP replied, “As soon as the matter came to the notice of the police, they immediately got the statue of Maharana Pratap repaired. It is true that this is a matter of anger but soon the accused will be identified and arrested.”

Meanwhile, the District President of Rajput Mahapanchayat Morena, Hanumant Singh Tomar said, “We got information that last night at around 11:30 some anti-social elements vandalized the statue of Maharana Pratap. The administration has repaired it overnight but we demand the administration to arrest the accused immediately. Also, the administration should take strict action against the accused so that such an incident would not repeat in future. If the accused are not arrested, then we will stage an agitation.”
