BJP leader Arjun Chowrasiya, found hanging in an abandoned building, had fled after during post-poll violence after Mamata Banerjee’s victory

Arjun Chowrasiya, the 26-year-old party worker who was found hanging in an abandoned building in the West Bengal Cossipore area of Kolkata on Friday, had fled from the area following the victory of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) victory in the state assembly elections last year, fearing for life, reports Indian Express.

According to the reports, BJP state secretary Priyanka Tibrewal disclosed that nearly 70 party workers, including Arjun Chowrasiya, were forced to flee from Cossipore after the TMC’s victory in the assembly elections.

“I had visited the Cossipore police station to ensure their safe return,” Tibrewal said.

On Friday, a West Bengal BJP member named Arjun Chowrasiya was found hanging in the Ghosh Bagan area inside an abandoned building in Cossipore. Chowrasiya, who was Cossipore BJYM Mandal Vice-President, had planned the celebrations to welcome Home Minister Amit Shah in Kolkata and was supposed to lead his Mandal team in a bike rally on May 6.

Chaurasia, who worked in an undergarment factory in Burrabazar, had left home at 8:30 pm on Thursday night. On the next day, he was found dead. Arjun was appointed vice-president of the party’s Mandal committee recently.

Arjun had lost his father when he was six-year-old. As per the family, no money was found on the body even as he withdrew his salary on Wednesday. However, his mobile phone was found in a pocket and was handed over to the police.

“My son was killed since he was an active BJP worker,” said an inconsolable Laxmi Chaurasia, Arjun’s mother.

Chowrasiya had made all the arrangements for a bike rally to welcome Home Minister Shah to the state. He was supposed to lead more than 200 bikes in the rally. However, he was found hanging in an abandoned rail quarter in the Cossipore area on Friday morning.

Meanwhile, the BJP has blamed the ruling TMC party for the death of Arjun Chowrasiya.

Following the death, all the celebrations for Amit Shah’s welcome in Kolkata were cancelled. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also visited Chowrasiya’s residence on Friday afternoon.

Mysterious deaths of BJP workers violence in West Bengal

This is not the first time when a BJP karyakarta has been found dead in the state of West Bengal. On April 19 this year, a BJP worker’s body was found mysteriously hanging from a tree at Mallarpur town in Birbhum District. The deceased, Purna Chandra Laha, aged 40, was a daily wager and an active supporter of the BJP in the state. While the BJP then stated that he was killed for political reasons, the family of the deceased claimed that the TMC workers had murdered Laha.

Also, in November 2021, Shambhu Maity (36), BJP leader, was hacked to death at Bhagabanpur in Purba Medinipur (East Midnapore) district of West Bengal. According to the reports, the body of the head of BJP’s Shakti Kendra in the Chandipur Assembly constituency was recovered from the banks of the Keleghai river.

On October 17, Mithun Ghosh (37), the district vice-president of the BJP’s youth wing, was shot dead in the Itahar area in Uttar Dinajpur district. Ghosh was fired upon by some unidentified miscreants right in front of his residence in Rajgram village. Though he was immediately rushed to the Raiganj Medical College and Hospital, the doctors declared him brought dead.

Several BJP karyakartas have been brutally murdered in the post-poll violence that the state witnessed after the results of the state’s Vidhan Sabha were declared. The BJP has alleged that the number of party workers killed since the announcement of poll results on May 2 is over two dozen. The names of a few deceased party workers are Jayprakash Yadav, Anil Barman, Raja Samonto, Dhiren Barman, Prosenjit Das, Nirmal Mandal, Ghanshyam Rana, Arindam, Midya Dharma Mandal, Chandan Roy, Haradhon Ray and many more.

Manjinder Singh Sirsa makes sensational claim, says Punjab cop behind the arrest of Tajinder Bagga was involved in the Bhola drug scam

On Friday (May 6) night, BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa claimed that the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Mohali) KS Sandhu, who came to arrest BJP spokesperson Tajinder Bagga from Punjab, has an ill-famed past.

“Changing the name doesn’t change the past & notorious actions of a person. This KS Sandhu who came to pick Tajinder Bagga today is the same notorious Kuljinder Singh with an ill-famed past,” he wrote.

Sirsa revealed that Kuljinder Singh Sandhu was posted as the DSP (Mohali) on the directives of the primary accused in the Bhola drug case, Sarabjit Singh. He slammed the AAP for choosing Sandhu to carry out the illegal arrest of Tajinder Bagga from his residence in Delhi.

“Sarabjit also a dismissed cop & main accused in Bhola drug case wanted by police in many states is presently in a Punjab jail in connection with half a dozen drug smuggling cases,” Sirsa added.

Sirsa also shared an audio clip of an allegedly leaked conversation between tainted cop Sarabjit Singh and former Punjab DGP Siddharth Chattopadhyay. Sarabjit could be heard conceding that Kuljinder Singh Sandhu enjoyed his ‘full confidence’ and could carry out illegal operations on his behest.

“DSP Kuljinder was posted on the instructions of drug lord Sarabjit who is also being investigated by NIA for his links with terrorists and drug smugglers, after a Chandigarh-based newspaper, Daily World exposed a recording in which Sarabjit can be clearly heard,” he continued.

“Sarabjit gave instructions to the then Punjab DGP Siddharth Chattopadhaya to post DSP Kuljinder in Mohali. This “defaulter cop” Kuljinder who has links with criminals & is the one patronised by drug smugglers like Sarabjit was today used by AAP Punjab Govt as its henchman,” Sirsa reiterated his claims.

He further accused AAP (Punjab) of using Kulwinder Singh to execute illegal operations and intimidate their political opponents.

Bhola Drug case

In February 2019, a special CBI court in Mohali sentenced Jagdish Bhola, ex Punjab police DSP, to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment for his involvement in a drug smuggling case. He was dismissed from service in 2004 after poppy husk was recovered from him.

He was arrested in 2013 for smuggling synthetic drug pseudoephedrine from India to other nations. Bhola had bought properties worth crores from drug money. His entire racket is estimated to be around ₹6000 crores. Besides Bhola, 23 others were found guilty of various charges.

Sarabjit Singh is a proclaimed offender in the Bhola drug case. He is currently in jail for forging the signature of former DSP Chattopadhaya and issuing fake promotion orders. He was arrested in 2013 after 2.6 kg of opium was seized from his Nayagaon house.

Hindustan Times labels BJP as ‘party of goons’, later deletes tweet and issues apology: Here is what they said

On Saturday (May 7) morning, the national English daily Hindustan Times courted controversy for labelling the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as ‘Gundon ki Party’ (party of goons).

The publication had tweeted, “In a dramatic sequence of events on Friday, #BJPGundoKiParty leader Tajinder Singh Bagga was arrested by the Punjab Police and brought back to Delhi within hours.”

The deliberate use of the defamatory hashtag by a leading English daily irked several social media users, who then slammed the publication for being partisan and biased.

“Seriously? This hashtag passed editorial scrutiny? Or is it reflective of HT’s considered editorial policy? Or, part of a deal the paper may have entered into for Delhi Government ads, perhaps?” inquired veteran journalist Kanchan Gupta.

Popular Twitter user Alok Bhatt remarked, “Aapiya handler of Hindustan Times forgot to change handle and ended up tweeting from @htTweets instead – tweet stands deleted. First tweet of this hashtag after a year was 2 days ago and was by the Vadodara branch of AAP.”

Another popular Twitter user Rosy tweeted, “SHAMELESS Hindustan Times. This is the hashtag you will use to report on Tajinder Bagga Kidnapping ?? Are you a news organization even??”

While taking cognisance of the matter, BJYM President Tejasvi Surya pointed out, “If mainstream news portals like Hindustan Times goes this way, then we will have to change the definition of what mainstream is.”

Hindustan Times ‘regrets’ its error, vows to not repeat it again

On being called out on social media, Hindustan Times tendered an apology and deleted the contentious tweet. The English daily stated, “An autopull feature on Tweetdeck used a mischievous hashtag for the BJP and the tweet was published before this could be manually checked and corrected. We sincerely regret the error.”

It is, however, not clear how an auto pull function would insert the hashtag so effectively in the right place, and therefore, the apology by Hindustan Times appears facetious.

In a subsequent tweet, it claimed, “We are reviewing our social media publishing processes and putting in place measures to ensure this does not happen again.”

In July 2021, Hindustan Times had courted controversy for trying to whitewash Batla House encounter convict Ariz Khan. Despite Khan being convicted of killing Delhi cop Mohan Chand Sharma Hindustan Times, the English daily tried to absolve the Indian Mujahideen terrorist of the heinous crime by prefixing the term ‘alleged’ before his name.

The typical pattern of various media houses, of the likes of Hindustan Times, to humanize the terrorists did not fail to catch the attention of various social media users.

Nagaraju had sold his gold chain to take his wife Eid shopping, right before he was brutally murdered by his Muslim in-laws over inter-faith marriage

B Nagaraju, the Hindu man who was brutally killed in full public view in Hyderabad over an inter-faith marriage with his Muslim wife, had reportedly sold his gold chain to take his wife Eid shopping. The 25-year-old Billapuram Nagaraju, a resident of Marredpally, was stabbed to death by his wife’s family members at the Saroornagar Tehsildar’s office on Wednesday night.

According to the Indian Express, K Satish, the HR at the vehicle showroom where Nagaraju has worked as a sales professional since March 9, found out about Nagaraju’s marriage recently when he told him about the gold chain.

“He told me he sold his gold chain for Rs 25,000 to take his wife to Charminar for Eid shopping. He was a very honest and hardworking person, very innocent too. He usually changes into his casual wear before leaving for home, but on Wednesday evening, he left in his uniform because he was getting late and had to pick up his wife from his sister’s home,” the media house quoted K Satish as saying.

B Nagaraju’s friend Talari Daniah had told The Indian Express on Thursday that Nagaraju’s wife’s elder brother Mubin Syed had sworn revenge and the couple was very frightened of him. Nagaraju was concerned about Ashrin’s safety so every day while he went to work, he would drop her at his sister’s house in Saroornagar.

According to the report, Nagaraju and his wife Ashrin were attacked while they were on their way from his sister’s residence to their home in Brundavan Colony on Wednesday night.

Ashrin Sultana, wife of Nagaraju reveals they were threatened by her family

Ashrin Sultana, the wife of the deceased had revealed that her brother Syed Mobin Ahmed, had been seeking revenge since the couple married in January. Along with Mobin Ahmed, Mohammed Masood Ahmed hatched a plan to eliminate Nagaraju. Apparently, last month, the accused tried to locate Nagaraju but failed to identify his location.

On May 6, the accused followed him on their scooter and found him at Panjala Anil Kumar Colony, Saroornagar. As they reached the Mandal Revenue Office in Saroornagar, Sultana’s brother stopped them and attacked Nagaraju with an iron rod. Syed Mobin Ahmed stabbed Nagaraju in public, who suffered serious injuries and died on the spot.

Sultana also recounted how her own family had threatened her to kill if she ever married the Hindu guy.

Speaking to News18, Ashrin Sultana, the wife of the deceased Billapuram Nagaraju, has disclosed that her brother tried to kill her twice before her marriage to Nagaraju.

“Before my marriage, my brother tried to kill me. He tried to hang me twice,” Sultana said.

She had also added that the couple had gone to the SP office, where they also signed a bond and informed the police about the threat from her family.

Meanwhile, the Police said that the knife and the iron rod used in the attack have been recovered. Sunpreet Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police, has stated that the matter is being tried in a fast track court.

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo moto cognisance of the case and sent a notice to the state government and the DGP on Friday, seeking a report on the same within four weeks.

Punjab govt spent Rs 45 lakh on a chartered flight for Bhagwant Mann and Arvind Kejriwal’s trip to Gujarat to launch political campaign

The Punjab civil aviation department has received bills of Rs 45 lakh for the private aircraft hired by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s political trip to Gujarat from April 1 to 3.

According to the reports, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had visited Gujarat along with Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal to launch their party’s campaign ahead of the assembly elections scheduled to be held in December.

RTI activist Harmilap Singh Grewal had sought details regarding the amount spent on Mann’s visits to Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. In response, the Punjab civil aviation department has disclosed that the department had received bills amounting to Rs 44,85,967 for the aircraft hired for the visit of the Punjab CM to Gujarat on his three-day trip.

Mann had also visited the hill state on April 6 in the state government helicopter. However, the RTI response said that the expenditure incurred on the individual visit of the helicopter could not be ascertained.

RTI activist Grewal attacked the Chief Minister saying before coming to power, Mann would mock then chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi for his helicopter use within Punjab, however, he is hiring a private jet for a visit to another state.

“His visit to Gujarat and Himachal were purely to campaign for the party and had nothing to do with the functioning of the state government or for the benefit of Punjab,” said Grewal, who was with the AAP but later quit the party. Grewal had contested as a Sanyukt Samaj Morcha candidate from Bathinda.

During his visit to Gujarat, Mann and Kejriwal had visited Sabarmati Ashram and had also taken out a roadshow in Ahmedabad. Gujarat and Himachal are scheduled to hold assembly elections later this year, and in both the states, AAP is eyeing to capture the opposition space vacated by the Congress party.

Madhya Pradesh: Armaan Khan, 3 others, arrested for slaughtering a cow in Vidisha, tensions grip as stone-pelting follows, 13 arrested

On Friday, the Madhya Pradesh Police arrested accused Armaan Khan, and three others after the remains of a cow were found floating in the water well in the Vidisha area of Khasaur, Madhya Pradesh. The Police have booked all the four accused under the Cow Slaughter Act.

According to the reports, an incident of stone-pelting was also reported in Khasaur where the rioters damaged a religious place, 3 residential properties, and a shop. The Police arrested around 13 unidentified people from both the communities on the charges of disrupting peace and harmony in the city on May 5.

SP Vidisha, Monika Shukla said that the incident of stone-pelting was reported after a cow was slaughtered on Thursday. “We reached the spot after getting the information. The accused has been arrested and an FIR has been lodged. Further investigations are underway”, she confirmed.

Reports mention that around 120 police officials were deployed in the area ahead of the Friday Namaz prayers in the city. The enraged people who had seen the remains of the slaughtered cow began to pelt stones at a religious place. Soon the tensions escalated as people from both the communities began pelting stones at each other and damaged 3 residential properties and a shop.

Pertinently, this is not the first case of stone-pelting in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Earlier on April 10, the incident of stone-pelting was reported as the Islamist mob attacked the Ram Navmi procession in Khargone. The cops resorted to firing tear gas shells to bring the situation under control. During the orgy of violence, a total of 24 people were injured, including six police personnel.

Also in the year 2021, an incident of stone-pelting was reported after locals in Vidisha alleged that a Christian missionary school in the area was practicing illegal religious conversion. The Police had then assured that the matter would be investigated and action would be taken against the wrongdoers.

In the current case, the police have controlled the situation and have pacified the matter by resolving the issues between the two communities. The Police also have arrested 13 unidentified people from both the communities in the case of stone-pelting. Further investigations are underway.

Watch: Khargone locals chase away Congress delegation, shout ‘Digvijaya Singh Murdabad’ slogans for politicising last month’s anti-Hindu violence

A video went viral on various social media platforms on May 5, wherein some angry locals, mostly women, were seen sloganeering in front of a Congress delegation that arrived in the riot-hit area of Khargone in Madhya Pradesh on Thursday. The Congress delegation, consisting of its 5 MLAs and some other leaders, was later chased away by the angry locals that accused the party of politicising the incident and defaming Khargone.

As per reports, the locals raised objections to the delegation visiting them only after more than 20 days since the violence. They expressed unhappiness with Congress’s stand on the riots issue and accused the Congress leaders of visiting the area with some other motive.

Locals shout ‘Digvijaya Singh Murdabad’ slogans

As per reports, some of the locals also shouted ‘Digvijaya Singh Murdabad’ slogans. The locals were reportedly miffed over the Congress leader’s statement wherein he had accused the Bharatiya Janata Party members of allegedly hiring poor Muslim boys and paying them to throw stones at the Hindu processions. He said that he has received a few unverified complaints which note that the attacks on the Hindu processions are allegedly sponsored by the BJP.

“I have received a few complaints, which I have not verified yet, but as per these complaints, some people from BJP themselves pay poor Muslim boys to throw stones. I will check the facts and will raise the issue then”, Digvijaya Singh was quoted at Nemmuch, Madhya Pradesh.

Khargone violence

On April 10, a Ram Navami procession that began in the Talab Chowk area of Khargone was abandoned midway after it came under a volley of stones. Riots escalated as several vehicles were set on fire injuring more than 24 people, including six police personnel.

The day after the riots, the Khargone administration took strict action against the miscreants and bulldozed their illegally constructed properties. Five JCB machines were deployed for the task. Also, the administration arrested close to 77 people in the case.

Khargone was one of the several places that witnessed stone-pelting, arson and violence during last month’s Ram Navami celebrations where Hindu processions were attacked by Muslims.

Maharashtra: Mumbai Police gives permission to 950 of 1140 mosques, 24 out of 2400 temples in Mumbai to use loudspeakers for prayers

Amid the loudspeaker row in the state of Maharashtra, the Mumbai Police on Saturday stated that out of 1140 mosques in Mumbai, 950 had been granted permission to use the loudspeaker for prayers. It added that the Mosques in the city follow the Apex court and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) guidelines on the use of loudspeakers

According to the reports, the Police received applications from 1,140 mosques across the city to seek permission to use loudspeakers for reciting Azaan. However, only one percent of the total temples in the city had applied for permission. The Police on Friday granted permission to 950 mosques to use the loudspeakers for offering prayers while only 24 out of 2400 temples were granted permission.

Pertinently, this is for the first time that thousands of mosques in Mumbai have applied to the police for permission to use loudspeakers for reciting Azaan. The applications started coming to Mumbai police in the past two weeks, especially after Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray raked up the issue and called upon the state government to pull down loudspeakers from atop the mosques across the state.

Thackeray in his Aurangabad rally on May 1 had warned that if the loudspeakers were not taken down from atop the mosques from May 4, his party workers would play Hanuman Chalisa on loudspeakers in front of the mosques. Reportedly, many of the MNS workers played Hanuman Chalisa during the morning Azaan time in Mumbai, Nashik, Pune, and other parts of Maharashtra. They were detained by the Police on the charges of disturbing peace and harmony.

The MNS chief had also said that there were 1140 mosques in Mumbai out of which 135 mosques acted against the Supreme Court’s decision even after several warnings. The Supreme Court in the year 2005 had issued an order in which it had banned the usage of loudspeakers from 10 pm to 6 am in public places. The court had then considered the serious effects of noise pollution on the health of the people living in the nearby areas.

The Mumbai Police on Saturday said that it permitted the religious places to use loudspeakers only after verifying the credentials of the applicants, the purpose, and the intention behind using the loudspeakers. While the Police said that it received applications from 1140 mosques and 24 temples, the total number of applications received from the other religious places like Gurudwaras and Churches is being evaluated.

Facebook tried to blackmail Australia, took down Australian govt emergency services and hospital pages to influence new law asking tech giants to pay

Social media giant Facebook deliberately took down several pages of Australian hospitals, emergency services and charities to pressure the country as its lawmakers discussed a law that would make tech giants pay to host news articles.

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Facebook deliberately blocked access to pages of hospitals, emergency services, weather services, and charities for users in response to potential legislation making platforms pay publishers for content.

Facebook documents and testimony filed to the US and Australian authorities by whistleblowers alleged that the tech giant deliberately had created a vague and lax process to take down pages of Australian government and health services. The company had deployed an algorithm to decide on what pages to take down that affect more than publishers.

Last year in February, Facebook had tried waging war with Australia ever since the latter came up with legislation that would require social media giants like Facebook and Google to pay news outlets.

Angered over this proposed legislation, Facebook had also cut off Australia by cutting off essential information services on health and emergency services. However, at the time of the fallout, the tech giant had termed it as “inadvertent,” but whistleblowers have now revealed that the move was a deliberate step to try and gain leverage over Australian authorities discussing the new law.

“It was clear this was not us complying with the law, but a hit on civic institutions and emergency services in Australia,” a Facebook employee who worked on the project told The Journal.

A Facebook spokesperson has also revealed that the documents in question clearly show that the company intended to exempt Australian government pages from restrictions to minimise the impact of this misguided and harmful legislation.

“When we were unable to do so as intended due to a technical error, we apologised and worked to correct it. Any suggestion to the contrary is categorically and obviously false,” the spokesperson said.

The report suggested that Facebook created and imposed a filtering algorithm that it knew would affect more pages than just news outlets. The tech giant was aware that the process was so vague that it would hit government pages and did not want to try to define what news was as it feared it would breach the law.

The journal also said that the Facebook employees attempted to point out the issue to the team leaders overseeing the project but were met with a cold response.

A few weeks later, Australia’s parliament passed an amended version of the law. Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg had reportedly praised the executives for their “thoughtfulness of the strategy” and “precision of execution”.

The whistleblowers’ accounts and the internal Facebook documents have now been submitted to the US Department of Justice and the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission, The Journal reported.

Pakistan: Unidentified men dig up the grave of a teenage woman and rape her corpse, 17 accused being interrogated, investigation underway

On May 5, Thursday, some unknown men dug out the corpse of a teenage girl and raped it in the Chak Kamala village in Gujrat, Pakistan.

Attaullah Tarar, the deputy secretary-general of the Pakistan Muslim League (PMLN), took to Twitter on May 6 to inform that 17 suspects are being interrogated and the investigation of the case is being done as per scientific methods.

According to reports, the shocking incident came to light when the deceased girl’s relatives visited the graveyard the next morning as per their religious traditions. The kin found the body dug up and lying uncovered. The body showed signs of rape.

The uncle of the deceased teenager approached the police and filed an FIR regarding the same. Based on the FIR, the police have started investigating the case. Reportedly, it is still unclear how many men were involved in this shocking incident.

According to local media reports, the teenage deceased girl, who was mentally and physically handicapped, died on May 4, Wednesday. The family buried her in the graveyard as per their religious traditions at around 6 pm in the evening and returned home.

The next day, when they returned to the graveyard to perform some rituals over the girl’s dead body the kin found the grave dug up and the girl’s body missing. Upon searching, they later found the corpse lying around 200 square feet away from the graveyard. It showed signs of rape.

The shocked family members rushed to the police station to file a complaint and demanded that the perpetrators of the heinous crime be brought to justice as soon as possible. The police, in turn, began their searches to look for and detain the grave-digger.

This is not the first such incident in Pakistan. In 2021, some unknown men had carried out a similar barbaric act in Maulvi Ashraf Chandio village near coastal town Ghulamullah. In 2019, OpIndia also reported about in similar crime wherein a group of unidentified men dug up the grave of a woman in a graveyard in Karachi’s Landhi Town area and raped the dead body.

In 2011, a gravekeeper named Muhammad Rizwan from North Nazimabad, Karachi was arrested for necrophilia. He was arrested after he confessed to raping 48 female corpses. Rizwan was caught running away after desecrating a corpse. He had caught the attention of nearby grave diggers and some other people.
