Ahilyabai Holkar, the Maratha Queen like no other who constructed and restored Hindu temples which stand tall even today

PM Narendra Modi on Monday, December 13, 2021, inaugurated the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor Project in Varanasi, restoring an array of temples to their past glory. With the inauguration of the hallowed temple corridor project, PM Modi has once again burnished his credentials as the most potent preserver of the Hindu heritage in the recent times.

As PM Modi buckles down the task of fulfilling the promises he made while contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Varanasi constituency in 2014, one of them being transforming it into a “city of temples”, he did not fail to acknowledge the role of historical figures who helped in conserving the city’s holy character.

In his inaugural speech, PM Modi paid floral tributes to Ahilyabai Holkar, Maharaja Ranjit Singh among other people, who played a pivotal role in reconstruction and renovation of Kashi Vishwanath in the past.

PM said, “The role of Mata Ahilyabai Holkar in the reconstruction of the temple is noteworthy. Maharaja Ranjit Singh sent 23 man (920 KG) of gold to the temple.” He said after Mata Ahilyabai Holkar, the expansion of the Kashi Vishwanath Dham had happened now.

And not just in words but in deeds too, PM Modi and the Centre paid homage to Maratha Queen Ahilyabai Holkar for her momentous contribution in preserving the heritage of Kashi Vishwanath. A figurine of Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar has been put up at the sprawling campus of the Kashi Vishwanath Dham, which was adorned with flowers for its inauguration on Monday. In addition to this, large posters of the Maratha queen were also held up in the premises of the corridors.

Who was Ahilyabai Holkar?

Ahilyabai Holkar was one of the most well-known queens to have presided over the Maratha Empire in the 18th century. Born in May 1725 in the village of Chaundi, in present-day Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra, Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar was the Holkar Queen of the Maratha Malwa kingdom.

She was not born in the royal lineage and was the hereditary noble Queen of the Maratha Empire. When she was 8-years-old, she was spotted by the acclaimed Lord of the Malwa territory, Malhar Rao Holkar, while she feeding the poor. Struck by her compassion and empathy for the destitute, Malhar Rao betrothed her to his son.

However, she lost her husband in the battle of Kumbher when she was just 29. After her husband’s death, she tried to end her life with the practice of Sati but was stopped by her father-in-law. She later ascended the throne and became the ruler of Indore on 11 December 1767.

In opposition to the prevailing culture of the time which disallowed women from pursuing education, Ahilyabai Holkar was an educated woman. She was homeschooled by her father. Perhaps, it was her education and knowledge that helped her to pull together the kingdom of Malwa after the demise of her husband and father-in-law.

Ahilyabai ruled for nearly three decades and was conferred with the title of ‘The Philosopher Queen’ by a British historian John Keyas. In her praise, he said: “Ahilyabai Holkar, the philosopher-queen of Malwa, had evidently been an acute observer of the wider political scene.”

Ahilyabai Holkar-The pioneer of temple construction and restoration

Though Ahilyabai Holkar was an astute queen and quite adept in handling court matters, she was best known for being the pioneer, builder and preserver of the Hindu temples across the length and breadth of the country. From Somnath in the west, to the Kashi Vishwanath in the east, Holkar dedicated her life towards renovating and reconstructing temples that were victims of the ravages of the time or were subjected to assault and plunder by Muslim invaders.

She built temples at Srinagar, Haridwar, Kedarnath, Badrinath, Rishikesh, Prayaga, Varanasi, Naimisharanya, Puri, Rameshwaram, Somnath, Nasik, Omkareshvar, Mahabaleshwar, Pune, Indore, Srisailam, Udipi, Gokarna, Khatmandu etc. She built and restored temples everywhere across India except for territories controlled by Afghans, Nawabs & the British.

River Ganga holds special importance as per Hindu scriptures. Regarded as sacred by Hindus, the river is embodied as the goddess Ganga in ancient texts and art. The water of river Ganga is considered as holy, with ritual bathing being an integral part of Hindu pilgrimage. The water, reverentially called as gangajal, was also used in various pujas performed in Hindu temples. Ahilyabai Holkar arranged for supplying water from the river Ganga collected at Gangotri to be received by temples across the country, including temples as far away as in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

The Maratha Queen’s contribution in rebuilding Kashi Vishwanath Temple

She is fondly remembered for constructing hundreds of temples, ghats, pilgrimage centres, Dharamshalas around her kingdom but rebuilding of Kashi Vishwanath Temple is considered as her greatest achievements of all.

Her contribution in restoring Kashi Vishwanath temple was particularly significant. The temple had stood tall for centuries before becoming an eye sour for the Mughals. The Islamic rulers, who were on the mission to destroy anything that was against Islam, saw Kashi Vishwanath Dham as one of the main targets challenging the supremacy of their faith.

On April 18, 1669, Islamic ruler Aurangzeb gave the order to demolish Kashi Vishwanath Temple. In his order, he had written that the temple was the place where “the foolish Pundits teach evil knowledge from junk books.”

On the explicit orders from Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, Kashi Vishwanath Dham, one of the holiest Hindu sites of pilgrimage, was plundered, desecrated, demolished & converted into Gyanvapi Mosque in 1669. The current structure and the form of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple could be attributed to Ahilyabai Holkar, who got the structure reconstructed in 1776. Then in 19th century, Maharaja Ranjit Singh adorned the temple with ‘golden’ shikhar.

Was not asked to continue as T-20 captain, informed just one and half hours ago before removing from one-day captaincy: Virat Kohli

Days after Virat Kohli was dropped as the one-day captain, he revealed today that he was informed about the decision just one and half hours before the decision was taken officially. Addressing a press conference today, the former white-ball captain of the Indian cricket team said that he was ready to continue as the one-day captain even after resigning as the T-20 captain, but the BCCI had other ideas. It is notable that BCCI has appointed Rohit Sharma as the one-day captain, saying there is no need for two white-ball captains.

He said that reports about the BCCI’s communication with him ahead of the decision were inaccurate, and he was contacted just before the selection committee meeting for the test team. There was no prior communication from BCCI after he had announced resigning as the T-20 captain. Virat Kohli said that he got a call from BCCI one and half hours before the meeting, and he was informed that all five selectors have decided to remove him from the captaincy of the one-day team. He accepted the decision of the committee, he informed.

Virat Kohli also denied reports that BCCI had requested to stay on as T-20 captain, saying the decision was well-received by the team management. He said that the decision was taken as a progressive step, there was no hesitation in accepting the resignation, and there was no request to him to withdraw the resignation.

He further informed after resigning from the T-20 captaincy, he had told BCCI that he will like to continue as the captain of one-day and test captains, but will accept any decision taken by the selectors in this regard.

Gone But Not Forgotten: CRPF Jawans turn up at the wedding of slain soldier’s sister, fulfilling the role of elder brother during ceremonies

On December 13, dozens of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officers showed up at the wedding of slain Constable Shailendra Pratap Singh’s sister. Constable Singh of the 110 Battalion of CRPF made the supreme sacrifice on October 5, 2020, while valiantly retaliating a terrorist attack in Pulwama.

A video of the event was shared on Facebook by one Sandeep Balhara. He wrote, “CRPF Jawans came to the wedding of the sister of slain constable so that she does not miss her brother.” In the video, the Jawans could be seen carrying a flower-veil above the bride and walking her to the stage. The Jawans came to attend the wedding as a surprise. As per reports, one of the soldiers of the battalion came to know about the wedding that was scheduled to take place in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh and informed the others, after which they all decided to show up and fill the space for the martyred Constable Singh. The video had left everyone teary-eyed.

The official handle of CRPF shared photographs of the wedding and wrote, “Brothers for life: As elder brothers, CRPF personnel attended the wedding ceremony of Ct Shailendra Pratap Singh’s sister. As the videos and photos have gone viral, many have praised the Jawans for their gesture.

Thousands had shown up for the final journey of Constable Singh

Last year, On October 5, two motorcycle-borne Lashkar-e-Taiba [LeT] terrorists opened fire on the Road Opening Party (ROP) of the CRPF at Kandizal near Pampore. Constable Shailendra Singh and Head Constable Dhirendra Tripathi lost their lives while three others soldiers were critically injured.

When the mortal remains of martyr Constable Shailendra Pratap Singh reached home, thousands of people showed up for the funeral procession. A video of his son Kushagra was shared on social media where he was saluting his father for the last time while chanting “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”.

He has survived parents, father Narendra Bahadur Singh, mother Siya Dulari Singh, wife Chandni alias Deepa, son Kushagra and three sisters Sheela, Preeti, Jyoti. Two sisters were married at that time, and the third one got married recently.

This is the first time that such a large number of CMs are visiting Ayodhya at the same time, and the district administration has made arrangements for the same.

Karnataka: SDPI leader threatens to gouge eyes of RSS members, minister orders action

On December 14, Araga Jnanendra, Home Minister, Karnataka, issued orders to the State Police to take action against Maulana Nooruddin Farooqui, Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), for his comments in which he threatened to gouge the eyes of RSS members. In his statement to Times Now, Jnanendra said, “I have instructed the police to take action immediately in the matter. I have informed Mysuru cops about taking Suo moto cognisance, I agree that Mysuru cops have delayed in taking action, but now it will be done.”

The Home Minister has directed the police to take sou moto cognisance of the video in which Farooqui was seen making a comment and initiate action against him. The video is from December 6. Farooqui allegedly threatened to gouge the eyes of activists from Bajrang Dal and RSS. He also made inflammatory comments about Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.

While referring to the controversy around the Jamia Masjid in Srirangapatna, he alleged that pro-Hindu groups claimed the mosque was built over a Hanuman temple. He alleged they were trying to instigate residents of the area.

He said, “I want to tell the Bajrang Dal and RSS in Karnataka that if they intend to destroy secularism and dare look up at the Srirangapatna Mosque, every single soldier of [18th-century Mysuru ruler] Tipu Sultan is standing ready to gouge your eyes out. Construct however vibrant a temple you want, the chant of Allahu Akbar will echo there.”

According to media reports, some Hindu groups have decided to recite Hanuman Chalisa at Srirangapatna Mosque. They said that the mosque was built on a Hanuman Temple. SDPI had organised a march against the event planned by the Hindu groups. The News Minute contacted SDPI that confirmed that the person in the video was Nooruddin Farooqui. They claimed that his comment was a reply to the comments made by Minister K. S. Eshwarappa and BJP MLA Basangouda Patil Yatnal.

As Gavaskar shuts up Rajdeep Sardesai on Live TV, here are 5 other incidents when he was schooled

Rajdeep Sardesai has faced humiliation on live television once again. On December 14, during a debate on India Today where former Indian Captain Sunil Gavaskar was a panellist, he told Rajdeep it would not matter if Sardesai would not agree with him as he would not lose sleep over it. The debate was about the alleged rift between cricketers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli that has been making rounds the whole day.

Towards the end of the debate, when anchor Rahul Kanwal asked Gavaskar what would he suggest to Jay Shah and Saurav Ganguly about handling the situation, he said it would be better if they both ignored it. He added that it could be just a rumour as there has been no official word over this by anyone. Both players have not said anything about it. Therefore, it would be better not to answer any controversy.

To his reply, Sardesai said that he did not agree with him. Gavaskar, with an ear-to-ear grin on his face, said, “Rajdeep if you don’t agree with me, it doesn’t matter. I won’t lose sleep over it.” Humiliated, yet again on Live TV, Rajdeep could not do anything but laugh over it.

Rajdeep Sardesai and his long history of humiliation

This is not the first time Rajdeep got schooled or humiliated during a conversation. Here are X incidents from the past that might haunt Sardesai for the rest of his life.

‘I don’t take you seriously’, said Mukesh Ambani

In March 2017, India Today Conclave published a 6-minute interview of Rajdeep Sardesai with business tycoon Mukesh Ambani. Sardesai introduced him as the most powerful person in the country. When he asked Ambani how he felt when he introduced him the way he did, Ambani said, “I don’t believe that. I do not take you seriously.” Sardesai, humiliated by the ‘most powerful person’, could only say, “Are yeh kya baat hui (What are you saying).”

Former President Mukherjee scolded him for interupting

In the same year, when former President Pranab Mukherjee completed his tenure, he gave an interview to Rajdeep Sardesai on the launch of his book. During the interview, Sardesai kept interrupting the former President. At first, he did not say anything but by the ninth minute, he had enough. He said, “Let me complete. You don’t have this habit. I am sorry to take you and remind you are interviewing the former President. Please have the necessary courtesy. Don’t interrupt.”

Bachchan refused to fall for his ‘trap’

In January 2016, during an interview with Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan, Rajdeep questioned him about his views on the alleged intolerance in the country. Bachchan, who was clearly taken by surprise by the question as earlier it was mostly about his career, said he was not qualified to answer the question. He said, “You know Rajdeep, I don’t know how the journalists address this issue, but really I am not qualified to answer this question at all. I am the least educated as far as these issues are concerned.” When Sardesai asked him if he was being diplomatic, Bachchan said, “So you are agreeing that it is some sort of trap.”

Sania Mirza expressed shock over Sardesai’s ‘disappointment’

In July 2016, Sardesai, during an interview with ace Tennis Player Sania Mirza, got schooled for his question about motherhood. He asked, “Where is Sania going to settle down? Is it going to be Dubai? Is it going to be in another country? What about motherhood? Building a family. I don’t see that in the book. It seems you don’t plan to retire just yet to settle down?” Sania countered and asked, “You don’t think I am settled?” She seemed surprised and shocked at the same time. He kept asking that she did not talk about retirement or raising the family in her book.

Sania called out his stereotypical views on women. She said, “You sound disappointed that I am not choosing motherhood over number one in the world at this point in time. But I will answer your question anyway. That is the question I face all the time.” She further said, “No matter how many Wimbledon we win or number one in the world we become, we don’t become “settled”. But eventually it will happen not just right now.”

Rajdeep must be very “happy” now as Sania is indeed a mother of a baby boy who was born in October 2018.

Sardesai schooled by PM Modi

If that is not enough, he was even schooled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2007 when he was Chief Minister of Gujarat. PM Modi was attending Hindustan Times Leadership Summit as a guest. Sardesai, who was interviewing him, asked if he was sorry about what had happened in 2002.

Then-CM Modi said, “A person who had got a chance to become anchor is trying to impose his propaganda while going out of the line from the topic for which I was called for in this Summit.” He questioned the organizers and asked them to decide how they wanted to move ahead with the interview.

Harry Potter author JK Rowling questions Police Scotland’s stand over ‘trans women’ raping actual women, gets hatred from trans activists

Harry Potter author JK Rowling has been at the receiving end of a lot of hatred, online abuse and even threats from ‘trans activists’ over her frank and practical approach on the issues of gender identity and its problems for biological women.

Recently, the author had shared a Times UK article written by John Boothman titled “The absurdity of police logging rapists as women”. The article had expressed concerns over a recent decision by Scotland Police where they had said that they will record rapes committed by offenders with male genitalia as being committed by a woman if the rapist just says he is a woman.

The Scotland police had further stated that even if the accused has not undergone any gender change surgery or is not in the process of changing his gender, and just ‘identifies’ as a woman, they will record the crime of rape as being committed by a woman, as per the wishes of the rapist.

Rowling had tweeted sarcastically, “War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength. The penised individual who raped you is a woman.”

She was quoting from George Orwell’s book ‘1984’.

As per a Daily Mail report, the recent proposal by Police Scotland has received wide criticism from several feminist groups and intellectuals, including Rowling and many politicians too. Feminist and women rights groups are concerned that such a move will warp the records of crime and eventually will understate the threat of male violence faced by women, apart from affecting the trial process of the crimes.

‘Dogma overriding common sense’

The Police Scotland’s statement has emerged after former SNP leader Kenny MacAskill wrote to the police asking them how it plans to deal with rape cases under the SNP’s new Gender Recognition Act, which makes it easier for people to be officially recognised as whichever gender they choose.

Gary Ritchie, Assistant Chief Constable for the police Scotland, stated that there are a number of scenarios under which a rapist can be recorded as a woman, “They include where a person, born male but who identifies as a female and does not have a full gender recognition certificate and then commits rape”, the Daily Mail reported.

It is notable here that under Scotland’s sexual offences law, rape is defined as non-consensual penetrative sex with a penis.

MacAskill, who has been a former Justice Secretary and a lawyer, said, “I have seen some absurdities as a lawyer for 20 years, but this tops it all and is dangerous. It’s physically impossible and is about dogma overriding common sense.’

Scotland’s new Gender Recognition Act

The SNP in Scotland has brought in a new Gender Recognition Act which will remove the necessity of a medical check for anyone who wants to change their gender. It claims to help shorten the time people have to live in their chosen gender before it is legally recognised, but essentially it states that a trans person can just choose their gender by which they want to be identified and it will be admitted officially, without needing documentation of a gender change surgery or treatment.

Asserting the police’s stand on it, Detective Superintendent Fil Capaldi said: ‘The sex/ gender identity of individuals who come into contact with the police will be based on how they present or how they self-declare, which is consistent with the values of the organisation.

“Police Scotland requires no evidence or certification as proof of biological sex or gender identity other than a person’s self-declaration unless it is pertinent to any investigation with which they are linked”, said the officer as per the Daily Mail UK.

Rowling gets called a ‘transphobe’, again, for speaking the truth

As usual, Rowling faced a barrage of online abuses and allegations of being a transphobe for pointing out some obvious truths and raising practical questions. The trans activists usually do not tolerate even a hint of criticism and even the most basic questions over the absolute dominance of trans identity politics are met with vicious trolling and ‘cancelling’.

One person named Stefania Sperandio even declared that Rowling is quoting Orwell without reading the book, or any other book.

Another individual accused Rowling of behaving like Professor Umbridge, a reprehensible, cruel character from Rowling’s Harry Potter novels.

Image via Twitter

Another person named Jonathan Van Ness stated that the biggest threat of danger against women has always been cis-gender men, not transgender men. But people like JK Rowling sit safely in their mansion (and peddle transphobia) as trans women are deprived of work, killed and raped.

Rowling has been ‘cancelled’ before

It is not the first time that JK Rowling, one of the world’s most successful and popular authors, has been ‘cancelled’ by the woke lot. She has been vocal about how the new ‘trans’ politics endangers women from vulnerable socio-economical sections and even claims spaces that are meant to be for women.

She had received death threats in the past from trans activists, for voicing her opinion against opening women’s toilets to ‘tans’ women.

Rowling had drawn the ire of the LGBTQ community last year after she linked her experience of sexual assault with her concern over transgender access to women-only spaces in a 3,600 words long essay.

In her article, Rowling, a domestic violence survivor, said she was perturbed that “the new trans activism” was undermining women and girls’ rights to single-sex spaces by “offering cover to predators”.

‘Trans fakers’

It is notable here that there have been instances where rapists and paedophiles have gained access into women’s spaces by just claiming to be ‘trans women’, and continued their crimes. In 2018, a convicted rapist and paedophile ‘Karen White’ was transferred inside a women’s prison in the UK after he claimed he is a woman, despite having never undergone any gender change procedure.

Inside the women’s prison, which had a mother and baby unit too, White continued his sexually predatory behaviour and was later found to have raped four inmates. The authorities were aware that White has undergone no gender change procedure and is still a biological male when he was transferred inside the women’s prison. He had claimed to be a woman by just wearing a wig and a dress.

Sh*t posting meme page asks army personnel to stop cribbing and quit if job is too hard, cries victim when called out

Popular Facebook and Instagram based meme page ‘AndheriWestShitPosting’ on Tuesday took to its sh*t posting page and let out a rant against the Indian Army, paramilitary and police forces.

In a now-deleted post, the meme page advised those serving the armed forces and other security agencies to not think that their jobs are hard. “I don’t get why folks in the police, defense and paramilitary forces (and their family members for some reason) always ask people to respect them because they think their job is hard.” it stated. The meme page then went on to justify that when these people chose their profession, they would have calculated sacrifices they would have to make, the ‘long working hours’.

Referring to the courage and strength required to face the enemy as ‘occupational hazard’ the sh*t posting meme page pointed out how no one asked these personnel to don the uniform. The page then added how these are not the only ‘jobs’ with ‘occupational hazard’ and how firefighters, ward doctors, railway foreman, sewage cleaner all have ‘similar occupational hazards’. “… (they) make similar sacrifices like missing on festivals, family events and shit like that, yet I’ve never seen anyone of them cribbing about it all the time,” the sh*t page said.

It concluded by giving an advice that if the armed forces, police and other security personnel find their jobs tough, they could ‘resign and chill’ as we live in a society where everyone does their part and everyone’s important.

The post came barely a week after the nation lost its Senapati, so to say, Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat, Brig LS Lidder, Lt Col H Singh, Wg Cdr PS Chauhan, Sqn Ldr K Singh, JWO Das, JWO Pradeep A, Hav Satpal, Nk Gursewak Singh, Nk Jitender, L/Nk Vivek, L/Nk S Teja lost their lives in a tragic helicopter crash. Lone survivor of the crash, Group Captain Varun Singh is currently fighting for his life.

Soon after the post went viral, the sh*t page admins likely got critical feedback which they then blamed on the ‘right wing trolls’ and ‘fauji brats’ who are not ready for such conversation.

Andheri West Shitposting page

The page admin claimed that he hoped one day India will reach a place where ‘no one will have to do a favour on anyone’ and all kind of jobs would be treated with equal respect.

AndheriWestShitposting page

A January 2021 article on Vice profiling the sh*t page talks about how one Balram Vishwakarma, whose family hails from Bihar but currently residing in Mumbai, started this ‘fun’ page to post memes back in 2018. The page now has about a lakh followers on Instagram. Fardeen Shaikh and Melvin Deepak Sadankar are two more admins of the page.

As per the profile drawn by Vice, Vishwakarma was at one point a Modi supporter, wished him on his birthday every year and was also homophobic and sexist. But then he became a left-liberal, he claims. However, it is not clear whether the transition to becoming ‘left-liberal’ was at the time of launching the sh*t page. The sh*t page owner also claims he has ‘traded toxic masculinity for G&T’.

Whether the page admin believes or not, the Defence personnel are indeed doing a favour defending, protecting those who sh*tpost because they themselves did not have the courage to sign up for taking the enemy’s bullet on their chest.
