US invites 110 nations including Taiwan, to virtual summit on democracy, China and Turkey missing from the list

United States President Joe Biden has invited 110 nations to a virtual summit for democracy scheduled for December 9-10, 2021. While its major Western allies, India, Israel, African nations and Taiwan, are included in the list, China has not been invited for the same. The State Department issued the list of participating countries on its website on Tuesday (local time).

From the Middle East, Iraq and Israel are participating in the summit. Interestingly, Arab allies of the US, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates, are also missing from the list. From Africa, several nations, including Nigeria, South Africa and Niger, are among the invitees.

In the Indian subcontinent, while India, Pakistan are there in the list, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are missing.

Turkey, a NATO nation, is also missing from the list.

The Summit for Democracy

The summit was announced in August this year. At that time, the White House said the meeting would “galvanize commitments and initiatives across three principal themes: defending against authoritarianism, fighting corruption, and promoting respect for human rights.” According to the State Department’s website, the main focus of the summit would remain around the challenges and opportunities facing democracies. It would provide a platform for the leaders to announce commitments, reforms and initiatives to ‘defend democracy and human rights at home and abroad’.

The US administration has planned to consult experts from multilateral organizations, philanthropies, civil society, and the private sector to table practicable and bold ideas around defending against authoritarianism, addressing and fighting corruption and promoting respect for human rights.

US-China relationships

Though it was believed that after President Biden took over the US administration, its relationship with China would improve. However, things did not work the way anticipated. Recently, reports suggested that the US would boycott Beijing Olympics scheduled for 2022. As per a report by the Washington Post, the US is pegged not to send a delegation to China where the games are just three months away in February 2022. As per the report, while the American athletes will take part in the games, the official delegation of the United States, as well as state politicians, will not attend the ceremony.

Kerala: Christian groups launch a campaign to identify hotels and restaurants owned by non-Muslims for ‘spit free food’

Earlier this month, a video of a Muslim man allegedly spitting in the plate of food had rekindled the debate surrounding the unhygienic practices adopted by some Muslim cooks while preparing food. After the video went viral on social media, Christian groups in Kerala reportedly launched a campaign to identify hotels owned by non-Muslims and urged their followers to visit only these hotels for ‘spit-free food’.

Social media pages of Christian groups such as ‘Soldiers of Cross’ shared lists of Kerala hotels that served “spit-free food”. These lists included hotels owned by Hindus or Christians in different districts across the state that they call “spit-free hotels”.

A report published by The News Minute said both Hindu and Christian Groups have been leading the campaign against Muslim hotel-owners. However, OpIndia could not independently verify if Hindu groups were also involved in creating the awareness of the menace that is being reported from various parts of the country.

‘Soldiers of Cross’, a Christian Group, has been sharing a district-wise list of Hindu-Christian owned hotels that they assert are ‘spit and mucus’ free. The lists are being widely circulated on Facebook, Whatsapp groups, and other social media platforms, where users are exhorting others of patronising only those restaurants that follow higher standards of hygiene practices as against those who might be serving their patrons with spit food.

As a part of its campaign to create awareness among patrons, the group is also asking people to avoid hotels and restaurants with ‘halal’ signboards, asserting that ‘spit food’ is being served there.

Increasing instances of Muslim cooks found allegedly spitting in food

The “spit-free” food campaign was launched in the wake of a viral video that showed a Muslim man allegedly spitting in food while preparing it. Habitual fake news peddler and an apologist for Islamists, Alt News defended the perverse practice by proffering a bizarre argument in its defence. In the article, Alt News tried to justify the act of ‘spitting’ by passing it off as blowing air onto food.

Notably, this is not the first time that Muslim cooks have been under the spotlight for spitting or applying saliva while preparing food. There have umpteen videos shot in different parts of the country where Muslim cooks are seen spitting in the food. On November 15, just a week after the aforementioned video started doing the rounds on the internet, another video of a cook—from a Muslim hotel in Ghaziabad—spitting on the dough before preparing rotis went viral on social media.

In October 2021, a similar video had surfaced on social media in which a man was seen spitting on roti at a Dhaba in Ghaziabad. The accused arrested in the case was identified as Tamizuddin. Hindu Raksha Dal had filed a complaint in the matter. The video was of Chicken Point in Panchvati Ahimsa Vatika market at Bhatia Mod. Not only several cases of cooks spitting on roti have emerged in recent times but incidents of spitting had come to light while packing food items as well.

In March 2021, the Ghaziabad police arrested one Mohammad Mohsin after a video of him making rotis while spitting on them at an engagement ceremony went viral on the microblogging site. The incident purportedly took place on March 11 in the Bhojpur area of Ghaziabad district. The cook identified as Mohammad Mohsin in seen making rotis and spitting on them.

In the last week of March, another man named Mohammad Khalik was arrested from the national capital after a video of him spitting on the dough while preparing rotis in a tandoor had gone viral on the internet. The Delhi Police took cognisance of the viral video and arrested the cook named Mohammad Khalik.

In yet another case of a cook spitting on rotis from March 2021, Delhi Police arrested two persons named Mohammad Ibrahim and Anwar after a video of them applying saliva on dough of the rotis had gone viral on the internet. In the video that had gone viral, one of the two men was seen spitting on the rotis before putting them in a tandoor. It was then reported that the video was from a hotel in Seelampur in Delhi.

Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar says India has become slave of USA, claims defense spending is empowering Army to destroy the world

Senior Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar while speaking at a seminar on Monday said that India has become slaves of America and lamented about the worsening ties with China and Russia.

He said, “In the last 7 years, we’ve seen that there is no talk of non-alignment & peace. We behave like we are slaves of Americans, begging for protection from China… Our relations with Russia has suffered a massive blow after 2014.”

According to Mani Shankar Aiyar, there has been no talks of peace and non-alignment during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government and an increase in talks with the United States. The Congress leader said that India has sought help from the United States for protection against China which has caused a major disruption in India’s relationship with Russia. He further said that the Congress leaders were not responsible for decisions taken by the Modi government.

Notably, Aiyar had also tried to undermine the Indian Army and suggested lesser spending on Defence saying, “Work in a focused manner to make us prosperous. But instead of that, we are spending crores to empower the army to destroy the world. The amount we are investing in defence equipment to annihilate the world, if we used that in education, health, and nutrition, we can remove the world from poverty. We should spend for maintaining peace.”

Woman accuses Football legend Maradona of raping her when she was 16 years old

A Cuban woman named Mavys Alvarez has accused Diego Maradona of raping her when she was a teenager, according to reports.

Alvarez also accused that the Fidel Castro government in Cuba including Maradona’s close associates like former manager Guillermo Coppola covered up what happened during her relationship with the late footballer. She has claimed that Maradona subjected her to physical and sexual abuse when she was 16 years old and introduced her to drug addiction.

Alvarez said, “I was dazzled, he swept me off my feet by giving me flowers, taking me out for walks and everything was beautiful, he painted this picture. But two months passed, and everything began to change quite a lot. I mean, I loved him but hated him too. I even thought about committing suicide.”

Alvarez had previously told the media that the 5 years of relationship between her and Maradona was consensual but that Maradona had forced him on her atleast once. Alvarez had testified last week before an Argentinian court and made allegations of human trafficking against Maradona’s former entourage. The court is investigating her allegations.

Alvarez’s complaint referred to the year 2001, when Maradona was in Cuba undergoing treatment for his drug addiction. She said in a press conference that the late footballer had raped her in a clinic in Havana while her mother was in the next room.

She said, “He covers my mouth, he rapes me, I don’t want to think about it too much,” adding, “I stopped being a girl, all my innocence was stolen from me. It’s hard. You stop living the innocent things that a girl of that age has to experience.” As per reports, Alvarez had first met Maradona in Cuba during that time and then she was taken to Argentina.

She had further stated that her family did not stop her from dating Maradona because Fidel Castro’s government was involved saying, “They were forced in another way to accept a relationship that was not good for them, or for anyone.” She claimed that Maradona forced her to take cocaine.

Alvarez said that she plans to help victims of trafficking in the future and the unfortunate women who have fallen prey to it. Diego Maradona passed away in November, 2020.

Uttar Pradesh: Man found alive in mortuary after 7 hours slips into coma, family prays for recovery

Srikesh Kumar, the 40-year-old electrician, who was found breathing after he was kept in the mortuary for over seven hours on being presumed dead, has now gone into coma at the Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial (LLRM) hospital in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.

RC Gupta, the Principal of the LLRM medical college said, “Srikesh Kumar has developed a blood clot in his head and he may require surgery in the future. The condition of the patient is still critical and he is on ventilator support. We have put him under conservative treatment at the moment as it is not safe to operate because of a bleeding disorder.”

Satyanand Gautam, the elder brother of Srikesh Kumar, a dentist by profession was quoted as saying, “We also do not want surgery at the moment because his body is still weak as a result of excessive blood loss. He has been given three units of blood so far. His vital organs are functioning normally at the moment and we are all praying for his recovery.”

“When we call his name, he responds, which is a positive sign that shows that a part of his brain is still responding. The only problem is that he is having a high fever and there is always the risk of an external infection as his immunity is low. Therefore, heavy antibiotics are being given to him,” added Gautam.

According to media reports, the family has still not filed a complaint about negligence against the district hospital staff in Uttar Pradesh. On November 20, it was reported that Srikesh Kumar’s body was kept in the mortuary freezer for post-mortem after the doctors declared him dead following an accident he met with on Thursday. After spending 7 hours in the mortuary freezer it turned out that he was alive.

Videos had emerged where Srikesh Kumar was seen being taken out from the mortuary after his relatives noticed Sreekesh showing signs of life. The family members immediately alerted the doctors and Sreekesh was moved to the district hospital for treatment.

Srikesh Kumar had met with an accident on Thursday night. His family immediately rushed him to the hospital in Uttar Pradesh, where he was declared dead. His body was sent to the mortuary for post-mortem.

On Friday morning, the police arrived to file a panchnama, a document signed by family members after identifying the body and agreeing to an autopsy. It was then that the victim’s sister-in-law, Madhu Bala, noticed that he was showing signs of movement.

In a viral video, Bala was heard exclaiming, “He is not dead. How did this happen? Look, he wants to say something, he is breathing.” Srikesh Kumar was immediately rushed to Meerut for treatment.

Srikesh’s brother-in-law, Kishori Lal, while speaking to India Today claimed that they took Srikesh to three hospitals before he was declared dead by the doctor on emergency duty at the district hospital. He alleged that the doctor who was on emergency duty did a checkup, but did not provide treatment. He said there is neither pulse nor blood pressure and that he is dead.

Meanwhile, Moradabad’s chief medical superintendent Dr Shiv Singh, said, “The emergency medical officer had seen the patient at 3 am and there was no heartbeat. He had examined the man multiple times. Thereafter, he was declared dead but, in the morning, a police team and his family found him alive. A probe has been ordered. Our priority is now to save his life.”

Singh said it was one of those “rarest of rare cases… We can’t call it negligence”.

Pakistan: Hindu Council pressurised to pay fines of remaining accused of the Karak temple attack

0

Hindus in Pakistan who have already paid the fines imposed on 11 Muslim clerics by the Supreme Court of Pakistan for damaging the Karak temple in December 2020 are being pressurized to pay fines of the remaining accused mentioned in the FIR as well, according to a report published in The Express Tribune.

The Hindu community in the Karak district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa had already paid the fines for 11 clerics who played a part in the Karak temple attack in December 2020. The fines imposed on the 11 Muslim clerics by the Supreme Court of Pakistan were paid from All Pakistan Hindu Council’s fund which was a ‘goodwill gesture’ to increase interfaith harmony between the Hindu and Muslim community in Karak district. A local resident said, “The Hindu Council decided to pay the fine of Jamait Ulemai-e-Islam Fazal (JUI-F) district Amir Maulana Mir Zaqeem, former district nazim Karak Rehmat Salam Khattak, Maulana Sharifullah and eight other leaders and Rs268,000 per person have already been paid.”

Notably, the Supreme Court in Pakistan had sought to recover Rs 30.30 million reconstruction charges from all the accused whose names were included in the FIR. As per reports, 123 accused were nominated in the police FIR with the help of video footage of the attack.

Reportedly, the district administration has been putting pressure on all the accused mentioned in the FIR to pay their share of fines having sent them notices on October 26. A Hindu leader said that after the Hindu Council paid the fines of 11 accused, the remaining accused named in the FiR now wanted the Hindus to pay for their share of fines as well. He said, “The amount has already been paid but now all the 123 accused are demanding that their fine should also be paid by the Hindu community which is not possible.”

Karak Temple Attack

Krishna dwara Temple, also known as Karak Temple, located in Karak’s Teri union council of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was attacked by a mob of radical Islamists on December 30, 2020. The mob set fire to the building, then razed it down with hammers and crude weapons. The fanatics were led by a local cleric and supporters of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam party (Fazal ur Rehman group). Video of the attack went viral on social media and showed the mob vandalizing the temple for hours. Allegedly, the temple was demolished in the presence of the district administration officials.

Beef mafia in Uttar Pradesh: Man shot dead by cattle smugglers for resisting theft of his buffaloes

Earlier last week, a man was killed in Uttar Pradesh’s Kasganj for holding out against armed smugglers who had raided a house with the intention of stealing the cattle.

The deceased, identified as Usveer Yadav, 21, was attacked and killed by cattle smugglers for resisting theft of his buffaloes.

Swarajya Magazine’s journalist Swati Goel Sharma got in touch with the deceased’s cousin, Govind, to get more information about the tragedy that befell their family. Govind said the incident took place at around 12 am on the intervening night of 16 and 17 November.

Govind, along with his brother, Usveer, was sleeping on the cot when they heard a commotion outside their house. They woke up to find their neighbour Jagdish raising frants alarm calls to inform them that their buffalos were being taken away by cattle smugglers.

The two brothers rushed out to stop the thieves when one of the armed robbers pumped a bullet in Usveer’s head. Govind and his family managed to put Usveer in a vehicle and rushed for the hospital, but he died on the way.

Usveer was the eldest of the six siblings. An elder sister is married, while two younger brothers and sisters each are studying in school or working at home, Govind told Ms Sharma in his conversation with the Swarajya journalist. For more than a year now, Usveer had been living in New Delhi, where he lived on rent and worked.

“He was the sole breadwinner in his family as my uncle is quite old. He used to regularly send money home,” Govind said.

Usveer would come to his village Nagla Dungar in Kasganj district near Agra only twice or thrice in a year. This time around, he had come to his home to attend an annual mela that is organised every November. But little did the family know that it would be the last time that Usveer would return to the village.

When asked to hand over the phone to Usveer’s father, Govind declined stating that the trauma has been too hard on him to put up with and he is yet to overcome the tragedy and speak on the phone about his son’s murder.

Hours after the incident took place, the official Twitter account of Kasganj police posted a note saying four team were deployed to catch the culprits. They had recovered two pistols from the gang, along with some cartridges and two buffaloes.

On November 20, three days after the incident, the Twitter account of the Kasganj police had caught a gang of buffalo thieves that shot dead people. Along with the tweet, a video statement by Kasganj Superintendent of Police Rohan Botre was also shared on Twitter. In the video, Botre said two members of the gang had confessed their role in the killing of Usveer.

According to Hindi newspapers, the two men had been identified as Saddam and Jumman.

As per Govind, the police had informed the family the smugglers were in the business of stealing cattle and selling them to slaughterhouses for meat.

Sharp rise in violent attacks against Gaurakshaks and holdouts by cattle smugglers

However, even as mainstream media obsesses over demonsing Gaurakshaks or cattle vigilantes, the attacks carried out by bovine smugglers against unsuspecting victims have increased sharply over the years.

In 2018, the Punjab and Haryana High Court made critical observations while hearing the bail application of a man accused of cattle slaughter in Mewat’s Nuh region.

“…the offences are being committed by hardcore smugglers, fully trained and that too in a well planned manner on large scale in an organised way. The affidavit [by Haryana police chief] also reveals that whenever the police tried to apprehend the accused or make efforts for intercepting or stopping the vehicles carrying smuggled cows for slaughtering, then accused persons attacked them not only with stones, but there are instances of using illegal firearms/weapons and such incidents are frequent in District Nuh,” the Court said about the nature of crime committed by cattle smugglers.

While the remarks were specific for the cattle smuggler active in Mewat region, wrongdoers in other regions seemed to have embraced the same modus operandi. In August 2019, one youth in Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit region was shot dead for trying to stop the smugglers from stealing cattle. Earlier on July 31, 2019, a ‘Gau Rakshak’ named Gopal had been killed after he was shot dead by a cattle smuggling gang. The incident occurred in a village near Palwal, Haryana.

In the same year, another such incident took place when a person named Vikas Sharma, a resident of Natthu Colony, Ballabhgarh in Haryana was killed after he tried to stop the cattle smugglers. An FIR had been subsequently registered by the police against six persons identified as Arif (a resident of Utawad, Palwal), Tassi (a resident of Punhana), Subin (a resident of Dhauj), Teeman (a resident of Bibipur) and Tareef (a resident of Nuh).

As the mainstream media and left-leaning journalists go out of their way to understate the criminal tendencies of cattle smugglers, they feel increasingly emboldened to continue their illicit activities unabashedly. In June 2021, VHP Gaurakshak Hardik Kansara was killed by cattle smugglers when he tried to stop them from smuggling cattle into Maharashtra. 10 people were arrested in connection with the case.

‘Woman with big breasts available in Paradise’, ‘Hoors do not urinate or defecate’: Kerala Maulana’s X-rated vision of paradise stirs controversy

Maulana EP Abubakar Qasmi has triggered controversy in Kerala after he recounted the advantages of being a Muslim. In his speech, Maulana revealed what Muslims get in ‘Jannat’ or paradise. According to EP Abubakar Qasmi, who gave Islamic speeches in Malayalam, ‘women with big breasts’ are found in paradise. Protests ensued after the offensive language was used by Maulana Qasmi on women as his speeches are popular with Muslims on social media.

Maulana Qasmi further claimed that rivers of wine flow in paradise along with gardens and big bungalows. He went on and said that the women who were in Allah’s paradise neither urinate nor defecate. He also added that Muslims going to Paradise get the privilege of sitting in the lap of the ‘Hoors’ there.

According to ‘Organiser‘, the Maulana said, “If a Muslim going to Paradise needs women with big breasts, then Allah gives them the ‘hoor’ of their choice. In Paradise, Allah has made a river of wine, and those who live there have full permission to swim. There is no restriction on drinking wine, because it is Allah who has created the river of wine.” However, in general, alcohol is considered haram in Islam and consuming it is prohibited.

Notably, Maulana Abubakar said that in Paradise, Muslims do not have to stand in long lines outside liquor shops, because everything in paradise was for free and its quantity is unlimited. Maulana Qasmi then claimed that the ‘hoors’ of heaven do not even have the power to think and understand.

Islamism apologist profiled by Shekhar Gupta’s ‘ThePrint’ wants made-in-India products boycotted globally to ‘save Muslims’

On Tuesday (November 23), self-proclaimed ‘Islamophobia crusader’ and habitual fake-news peddler CJ Werleman appealed to his followers to boycott Indian products to supposedly save Muslims in India and Kashmir.

In a tweet, he pleaded, “Save Muslims in India and Kashmir: Boycott Indian products.” The ‘journalist’ had also plugged an old video, dating back to October 13 this year. Werleman, known for peddling misinformation about India, has been profiled by Shekhar Gupta’s The Print and branded as a journalist.

Screengrab of the tweet by CJ Werleman

At the very onset, he claimed that India is now the subject of a mounting international pressure and boycott campaign for its supposed ‘abuse of Muslims’ in India and the Indian Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. CJ Werleman lamented that Western democracies and Muslim majority nations have remained a ‘mute spectator’ to the Modi government’s alleged initiative to drive Indian Muslims to the neighbouring nations of Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

He alleged that India came under the global spotlight after a photojournalist named Bijay Shankar Baniya jumped on the dead body of an illegal encroacher during the eviction drive in the Darrang district of Assam. While citing an article from The Siasat Daily, Werleman stated that the Kuwait Assembly had condemned supposed atrocities committed against Muslims by ‘Indian authorities and Hindu extremists’. He reiterated that a global campaign to boycott Indian products was underway.

Tennis legend falls for fake news peddled by CJ Werleman

Earlier on October 21, the fake news peddler had tweeted a video of Pramod Muthalik, the chief of the Hindu activist group Shri Rama Sene, to allege that he called for violence against Muslims and the demolition of a mosque in Karnataka. “Leader of Hindutva group Sri Ram Sena calls for violence against Muslims and the demolition of Jumma Mosque in Karnataka,” he wrote.

Even tennis legend Martina Navratilova ended up falling for the fake news. OpIndia had earlier reported how left-liberal news websites had falsely claimed that Pramod Muthalik called for a “Babri-like” demolition of the Jamia Masjid in Gadag in Karnataka. However, in reality, he had made no such claims.

Werleman is a habitual fake news peddler who spends time spewing anti-India venom while inventing incidents out of thin air. Earlier in September, he had called for ‘regime decapitation’ strikes against India.

Note: Earlier this article identified CJ Werleman as columnist with ThePrint. However, it turns out, he was only ‘profiled’ by Shekhar Gupta’s ThePrint and has not written any article for them. We have updated the copy. Error is regretted.
