Chinese human rights activist calls for the world to organise ‘clean Olympics’, says China should not have the honour of hosting the event

China is due to host the Winter Olympics in 2022. Amidst the ongoing debate over whether an communist regime, accused of committing genocide, atrocities, crimes and grave breaches of an international treaty deserve to host this prestigious sporting event, a Chinese human rights activist has in his article for The Washington Post chronicled why China does not deserve the honour of hosting the Olympic Games.

Recounting the innumerable atrocities the dictatorial regime of the Communist Party in China has committed over the years, Teng Biao, Chinese human right activist, demands that the world should at least this time, organize a “Clean Olympics” elsewhere.

Biao reminds of what the Olympic Charter refers to, which he says time and again calls to boycott games being hosted by China and other repressive regimes and has been discussed but never implemented.

Biao writes that in the year 1935, the “Committee on Fair Play in Sports” had questioned Nazi Germany’s hosting of the 1936 Summer Olympics. The then American Olympic Committee had backed Germany’s hosting privileges by saying politics should not be mixed with sports. Despite being criticised and called Hitler’s “propaganda bonanza”, America then went ahead to support Germany’s right to host the Olympics.

The activist recollects how a similar question arose when Beijing prepared to host the 2008 Games. The human right activist pens down how China had then carried out an oppressive initiative against common people in order to “clean up” the city to build a state of the art infrastructure. Biao writes that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) regime had then arbitrarily bulldozed homes and forcefully evicted people. Those who objected were detained and tortured. The journalists who told the truth were imprisoned.

Here the activist recounts his personal life experiance. He shares how he and his friend Hu Jia were implicated by the government in 2008 for publishing an article called “The Real China and the Olympics.”

While Hu Jia was charged with “inciting subversion of state power” and sentenced to three and a half years in prison, Bias recounts how his license to practice law was cancelled, his passport was confiscated and he was kidnapped from a sidewalk by plainclothes police who detained and tortured him.

The Chinese activist further writes that others who signed an open letter organized by Liu Xiaobo (who later won the Nobel Peace Prize) and Ding Zilin proposing that Beijing’s Olympics slogan be revised to “One World, One Dream, Equal Human Rights” were either detained or imprisoned

He recollects how despite all the calls to boycott, China could not be stopped and it had gone ahead to host the 2008 Games. “No country boycotted, even as tens of thousands of prisoners of conscience stood mute in prison and rights lawyers, like me, were held under house arrest”, says Bias.

Speaking on China’s double standards, the human right activist writes that though from the outside, China has always tries to project itself as a progressive country which respects and guarantees basic freedoms but from the inside it has always been extremely autocratic and repressive.

“Since 1949, China’s Constitution has guaranteed basic freedoms. The regime has signed many international human rights documents to deflect foreign criticism. In 1997, Beijing promised no change in Hong Kong for 50 years”, however, all this has been just a eye-wash, claims the activist.

Additionally, Biao recounts that in the year 2015, when China won the rights to host the 2022 Olympics, it cracked down on lawyers, journalists and activists across China. Since then, it has not only inflicted atrocities on native lawyers, journalists and activists but the Xi regime has transgressed dissidents even outside China’s borders. It has shut down nongovernmental organizations, demolished Christian churches, Tibetan temples and Muslim mosques, persecuted, sometimes to death, believers of Falun Gong; and sharply increased its control of media, the Internet, universities and publishers.

The activist furthers that in late 2019, China concealed the covid-19 outbreak by jailing and silencing whistleblowers and journalists.

Directing attention towards the ceaseless incidents of atrocities and persecution under the CCP regime in China, Bias furthers that the Chinese Communist Party has systematically rounded up millions of Uyghurs and Kazakhs into concentration camps in Xinjiang since 2017. There are credible reports of systematic rape, sexual abuse and torture, forced sterilizations, coerced marriage to Han people, and separation of children from parents.

Since 2009, more than 150 Tibetans have self-immolated, calling for basic freedom and for the Dalai Lama to be allowed to return. The regime has sent a reported 500,000 Tibetans into forced-labour camps. The Xi Jinping’s communist regime has also stopped the teaching of Mongolian language in schools in Inner Mongolia.

He furthers how President Xi Jinping has centralized power and taken all possible steps to ensure that he remains dictator for life.

Saying so, Teng Biao recounts how in October when he along with representatives of more than 160 human rights organizations, met the International Olympic Committee, he got the same response which the then American Olympic Committee had given while backing Nazi Germany’s hosting privileges in 1935.

Biao says that though it would be wrong to deprive athletes of the opportunity to perform on the world stage, it would be criminal to grant the honour of hosting the game, not once but twice, to an communist regime, that has ceaselessly been committing genocide and assaulting human rights and dignity. Saying so, the Chinese activist urges the world to organize a “Clean Olympics” elsewhere.

It is pertinent to note here, that only last week, the Canadian Olympic organisers have said that they would warn its athletes to refrain from openly criticising China ahead of the winter games. The decision was taken due to concerns that the Communist Party’s critics could be prosecuted under the draconian national security law. In an interview with the Globe and Mail, David Shoemaker, chief executive officer of the Canadian Olympic Committee, said that the athletes have been asked to not to comment at least until after the Games have taken place.

Over the years, more and more evidence has emerged of China’s human rights violation of the ethnic-religious minority group- Uyghurs in Xinjiang. The concentration camps are the most extreme example of China’s inhumane policies against the Uyghurs. Uyghurs inside and outside the camps are exploited for cheap labour. Chinese authorities subjected Uyghur women to mass sterilization or have abortions. They are raped and persecuted and put in camps if they resist.

The Chinese government, however, claims that the camps are merely vocational and training centres. It has justified the oppression in Xinjiang as an attempt to clamp down on terrorism and extremism emanating from the Uighur separatist movement.

Armenian group wants USA to push for FATF blacklisting of Pakistan for funding “Jihadist mercenaries” against Armenia in Nagorno-Karabakh

The Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA), the largest Armenian American political organization operating in the USA, called upon the Secretary of the U.S. Treasury to demand the blacklisting of Pakistan at the FATF meeting later this month. In a tweet last week, ANCA implored U.S. Secretary of Treasury Janet Yellen to direct the U.S. representative for the FATF meeting to demand the blacklisting of Pakistan for “terrorist financing, including its funding of jihadist mercenaries to fight for Azerbaijan against Artsakh.”

This campaign from the ANCA comes in time for a series of meetings by the FATF’s working groups before the crucial plenary session during 22nd to 25th February, which will decide Pakistan’s fate. The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) is a global terrorist financing watchdog which sets international standards that aims to prevent illegal and harmful activities. Pakistan has featured in the FATF’s grey list since June 2018 with multiple deadlines and delays preventing its fall into the blacklist.

This push for the blacklisting of Pakistan by an Armenian lobbyist group comes in the backdrop of the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Reports from Armenia suggest that Pakistani troops did have a huge role to play in this conflict against Armenia. According to FreeNews.AM, an Armenian news source, a telephonic conversation between two locals revealed the presence of Pakistani military in the conflict region.

Nagorno-Karabakh is a disputed territory which is internationally recognized as a part of Azerbaijan, but in de facto control of the Republic of Artsakh since the first Nagorno-Karabakh War in the early 90s. The Republic of Artsakh is an unrecognized state with no recognition from any United Nations member or observer state. Artsakh has close relations with Armenia and uses same currency. On 27th September 2020, clashes erupted on the Armenian-Azerbaijani Line of Control. Experts believe that the fighting started with an Azerbaijani offensive, with the support of Turkey.

Turkey has shown its support for Azerbaijan more overtly, choosing to send two Turkish-backed Syrian rebel groups into the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone comprising of around 2,500 men. For this, France accused Turkey of sending Syrian jihadists to fight in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Both Turkey and Pakistan have been historically close to Azerbaijan, being the first and second country to recognize its independence from the USSR in 1991, respectively. Moreover, Azerbaijan and Turkey have openly supported Pakistan’s stance on the Kashmir issue as opposed to India.

Understanding the Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict

To understand the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, a dive into this mountainous region’s history is necessary. The present day conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh has its roots in the Soviet annexation of the South Caucus region. As Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia fell under Bolshevik rule, a re-organization of these regions into Soviet republics part of the USSR was inevitable.

During such a reorganization, the Nagorno-Karabakh region, with a supermajority of ethnic Armenians and Christians, was made a part of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic, instead of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic with which it shared its religious and linguistic culture.

The Nagorno-Karabakh region was a landlocked, self-governing enclave in the Azerbaijan SSR called the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast. According to the 1926 census, the population of this region was 89.2% Armenian. The Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast was a linguistic and cultural enclave in the Shia majority, Azerbaijani-speaking Azerbaijan SSR. It was a flawed decision by the USSR to not unite the Nagorno-Karabakh people with their linguistic, religious and cultural brethren in the Armenia SSR.

As the Soviet Union was headed for dissolution in late 80s early 90s, fighting broke out between the Armenians in the oblast and the Azerbaijan SSR in 1987. This fighting later escalated to the first Nagorno-Karabakh War, which went on till May of 1994. In 1991, an independence referendum was held in Nagorno-Karabakh, which received 99.98% of the voter favoring it. The local Azerbaijani population, which made up for around 20% of the population boycotted this referendum.

The newly established Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, with the help of Armenia, not only managed to retain control of Nagorno-Karabakh, but also captured seven Azerbaijani districts bordering the Nagorno-Karabakh region. From the early 90s, these districts were under either Armenian or Karabakh control. In the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War, Azerbaijan re-captured some of these districts and regained some in the ceasefire agreement.

Thus the story is clear, Nagorno-Karabakh is a region dominated by Armenian Christians, which was handed over to the culturally and linguistically alien Azerbaijan SSR, either due to a mistake or due to a divide and rule policy. Post the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Nagorno-Karabakh, with the help of Armenia, established itself as a de facto independent state, which is now self-stylized as the Republic of Artsakh. However, it remains unrecognized because Azerbaijan is recognized to have de jure control over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Therefore, it is no surprise that Armenian lobbying efforts are targeting Pakistan, which has emerged as one of Azerbaijan’s closest geopolitical ally. Pakistan recognizes all Azerbaijani claims in the Nagorno-Karabkh region and Azerbaijan returns the favor in the case of Kashmir.

If the allegations coming out of Armenia are true, that Pakistan supported Jihadists in the Nagorno-Karabakh region during the 2020 war, it would make Pakistan’s FATF case even more difficult. Pakistan hopes to be taken off the grey list in the upcoming meeting, however according to experts, Pakistan is expected to remain grey listed post the FATF meeting later this month.

India’s stance on the conflict

India has employed a measured and neutral approach in its foreign policy with respect to the South Caucus region. At the very start of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in 1993, India “followed with great concern the escalation of hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh with considerable ingress of Armenian forces into Azerbaijan” and had called for “respecting each other’s’ territorial integrity and inviolability of existing borders”.

In 2008, India voted against Azerbaijan’s resolution in the United Nations General Assembly which inter-alia demanded “the immediate, complete and unconditional withdrawal of all Armenian forces from all occupied territories of Azerbaijan”, joining Russia, France and USA. India has time and again sought a peaceful resolution of the conflict through diplomatic channels.

Despite Azerbaijan giving every reason for India to side with Armenia in this conflict, India has remained steadfast on her neutrality. India seeks a peaceful resolution this conflict, even as Azerbaijan whole heartedly supports Pakistan in the Kashmir issue. The principled stance of India on this conflict, calling for an immediate cease of hostilities, is certainly not anything new on India’s part.

But with Modi’s bold foreign policy vision at the helm, maybe it’d not be amiss to expect India to have a more forceful stance on such issues. Armenia is a potential strategic ally against an axis of countries which usually align against India which are Pakistan, Turkey and Azerbaijan. That, along with the ascent of Armenian lobbying against Pakistan in Washington D.C., can probably convince some in India’s foreign policy establishment to push for closer strategic ties with Armenia.

Khalistani links of Pieter Friedrich whose name surfaced in the Greta toolkit conspiracy: From being ready to work as a security guard to an ‘expert’

0

A report by the Disinfo Lab has gone viral on social media which makes some startling claims about Pieter Friedrich whose name has surfaced in the Greta Thunberg toolkit conspiracy. The Delhi Police has informed that he first came under the radar of the Indian security establishment in 2006 when his association with an ISI operative became known.

Disinfo Lab, an OSINT (Open Source Intelligence) initiative, says that Pieter Friedrich was struggling economically when Bhajan Singh Bhinder recruited him as part of his disinformation campaign against India. It also says that Friedrich was a Christian missionary. At one point of time, he was even ready to work as a security guard.

In order to boost his credibility, multiple books were published in Friedrich’s name. Articled penned by Pieter Friedrich also surfaced in ‘pliant media’ which was then used to amplify his credibility on social media platforms.

As part of the efforts to build credibility, multiple organisations were established in the United States of America and Pieter Friedrich was appointed to their Boards. One of the most prominent of them was Organization for Minorities of India (OFMI).

It has been reported in the media earlier that Pieter Friedrich has campaigned against the Gandhi statue that was erected at the City of Davis in California, USA. The same statue was vandalized by Khalistanis two days after the Republic Day riots.

Furthermore, Friedrich has tried to deny that OFMI has any links to Khalistanis but it has been reported that Bhajan Singh Bhinder is one of its leaders who was investigated for trying to procure arms for the Khalistani movement in 1992.

One East Bay Express report from 2003 says, “According to Lum’s (Special Agent Lum of the DEA) declaration, a pair of Customs Service agents posed as weapons dealers. Bhinder and Gurtej Singh allegedly met with the undercover agents to negotiate the purchase of assault weapons and shoulder-fired missiles for the Free Khalistan movement.”

The report adds, “Bhinder allegedly said he was looking for one ton of C-4 plastic explosive “to start with.” The declaration says the unnamed agents then showed Bhinder and Singh a collection of machine guns. They were evidently looking for something with more firepower, namely M-16s, AK-47s, detonators, night-vision goggles, mobile communications equipment, remote-control equipment, grenade and rocket launchers and, for good measure, Stinger missiles.”

“Bhinder allegedly said the weapons would travel via yacht to Pakistan. They would then move overland by truck into India, where members of the Free Khalistan movement would receive them. Bhinder, the declaration said, would pay half of the money when he got the weapons and the other half when the shipment arrived in India,” it continued.

According to Disinfo Lab, the Bhinder-Friedrich duo first began with their tirade against Mahatma Gandhi.

Disinfo Lab also said that OFMI is majorly funded from Pakistan by its influencers and media. It is also claimed that Pakistani Cabinet Minister Fawad Choudhary, who had recently claimed responsibility for the Pulwama terrorist attack, is one of the funders of the OFMI.

Disha Ravi, a climate activist, has been arrested in connection with the Greta toolkit conspiracy. Following the arrest, the name of Pieter Friedrich came to the fore.

The WhatsApp chats between Greta Thunberg and Disha Ravi also surfaced. After the Swedish activist leaked the anti-India toolkit on social media, Disha is reported to have told her, “Can we just not say anything at all for a while. I am going to talk to lawyers.”

Why is the suicide case of TikTok star Pooja Chavan snowballing into another embarrassment for Uddhav govt: What we know so far

A 22-year-old TikTok star Pooja Chavan allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the Heaven Park building in Pune’s Wanawadi area on February 8. The Maharashtra police, probing the case, filed an accidental case and dismissed anything suspicious in the matter.

While the Maharashtra police was all set to write off the case, terming it an accidental death case, six days after the suicide of the young TikTok celebrity, Shiv Sena leader and Forest Minister Sanjay Rathod name surfaced in connection with the case.

Many audio clips allegedly linked to Pooja Chavan’s death, moreover, alluding to the involvement of the state minister, went viral on social media, following which, many BJP leaders namely Devendra Fadnavis, Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil, Kirit Somaiya, demanded a detailed inquiry in the case. Somaiya also demanded that Rathod be sacked from the Cabinet and arrested immediately.

According to reports, the allegations on the Uddhav Thackeray’s cabinet minister was first levelled by BJP leader Chitra Wagh. Actually, after the death of the TikTok star, who hailed from the temple town of Parli Vaijnath in Beed district, audio clips of her purported conservation with two persons went viral.

In one of the viral audio clips, one person is heard making some suggestions to suppress a case. The person also issues instructions in Marathi translated as: “in any case, take possession of laptops and mobiles, this issue should not be escalated”.

Hinting that the voice in the purported audio clip was that of the Shiv Sena leader, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Friday, “The voice in the clip is very easily recognisable by all, and police should also reveal whose voice is there in that clip which is being hidden by the police,” said the BJP leader adding that his office received these 12 clips of conversation between two persons linked to the woman’s death, and he had forwarded them to the Director-General of Police.

Moreover, some social media posts claimed that Pooja Chavan was in a relationship with the Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Rathod.

Sanjay Dulichand Rathod is a Shiv Sena politician from Yavatmal district of Maharashtra. He was appointed as Minister of Forest, Disaster Management, Relief and Rehabilitation in Uddhav Thackeray’s cabinet in 2019. In 2020, he was appointed as the Guardian Minister for Yavatmal district. His win in the 2014 election made him a four-time Shiv Sena MLA from Yavatmal. Sanjay Rathod is a famous leader of the Banjara community.

After the suicide case of the TikTok, celebrity snowballed into a political row in Maharastra, with the National Commission for Women (NCW) also taking cognisance of the case and seeking a report on the death of Pooja Chavan from the Maharashtra Director General of Police (DGP), Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray stepped in, confirming that an enquiry is underway and the truth will surface after the probe is over.

“We have been hearing about allegations from different quarters. We have taken note of everything and given directions for an investigation into the matter. However, attempts to destroy careers of individuals, which had been made in some past cases, will not be allowed in this case,” Thackeray said, adding that action would be taken as per the law.

Speaking on the allegations meted out at their party leader, the Shiv Sena motormouth leader Sanjay Raut also said on Sunday: “Here have been instances of character assassination in politics but “truth and law” will prevail in this case. “Law will prevail and not what the Opposition wants in this case. Truth will always prevail. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has already said that the case was being probed,” he said.

Following the political uproar, the Wanawadi Police, which was close to shutting the case, are now scrutinising Chavan’s social media accounts, the audio-messages, along with her phone logs to ascertain the sequent of events and the cause behind her alleged suicide.

Meanwhile, the Shiv Sena leader who has been named in the case is said to be absconding ever since his name appeared in the case. His phone has also been reportedly switched off since then.

SC directs SAT to hear NDTV plea against ₹16 crores fine in insider trading case, says ‘no precedent set’ while extending special relief: Read details

0

On Monday, the Supreme Court of India directed the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to not take any ‘coercive action’ against promoters of NDTV, Prannoy Roy and Radhika Roy in the insider trading case. The duo had moved the apex court against the order of the Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) asking them to pay 50% of the wrongful gains made through insider trading 12 years ago.

The case was heard by a 3-Judge Bench of the Supreme Court comprising of Chief Justice of India SA Bobde, Justices AS Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian. The CJI said, “No amount shall be coercively recovered from the appellants(Prannoy Roy and Radhika Roy) for hearing the case.”

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the SEBI, stated that the order might be treated as a precedent. It was then that the Supreme Court pointed out that the order shall not be treated as a precedent. The Supreme Court directed the SAT to hear appeals without a deposit and halt recovery proceedings against the NDTV promoters.

We have no other money, claims advocate representing Prannoy Roy

During the last hearing of the case on January 28, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi said that Prannoy and Radhika Roy were ‘willing’ to offer their shares in NDTV as security for the ₹16.97 crore fine imposed by SEBI. Rohtagi argued that the duo held around 50 lac shares in the company, which has been trading at ₹37/share. He argued that the value of the shares was higher than the penalty amount. However, Solicitor General Mehta pointed out that their shares were frozen by SEBI in another case.

CJI Bobde said, “This is a deposit in Court. Not an encumbrance or a pledge. There is a difference.” SG Tushar Mehta asked the Roys to deposit security, other than shares. He pointed out that the appeals before the SAT will be heard on March 6 and that the deposit was a pre-condition for hearing their appeal. Mukul Rohtagi, however, argued that the absence of deposit might lead to attachment of properties and its eventual sale. He added that NDTV is a struggling channel and that the promoters had nothing to offer as ‘deposit’ other than shares.

The background of the insider trading case against NDTV promoters

NDTV founders Prannoy Roy and his wife, Radhika Roy had filed an appeal with SAT against a SEBI order passed on November 27, barring the couple from trading in the securities market for two years. SEBI directed Prannoy and Radhika Roy to shell out ₹16.94 crores, along with 6% interest per year from April 17, 2008, to the date of payment, within a span of 45 days. When they approached the Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT), it directed the duo to deposit 50% of the penalty for hearing their appeal.

According to an investigation conducted by SEBI, the two had violated the Prohibition of Insider Trading (PIT) Regulations. They are accused of possessing Unpublished Price Sensitive Information (UPSI) during 2007-2008 relating to discussion on the reorganization of New Delhi Television Ltd. Besides the duo, India’s capital market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has also found the media network’s CEO Vikramaditya Chandra, senior advisor Ishwari Prasad Bajpai, group CFO Saurav Banerjee guilty of making undue gain from insider trading.

Greta ‘Toolkit’ case: Absconding Nikita Jacob files for anticipatory bail after Delhi Police issues a non-bailable warrant

After the arrest of ‘activist’ Disha Ravi from Bengaluru yesterday, the Delhi court has issued a non-bailable warrant against two accused named Nikita Jacob and Shantanu in the Greta Thunberg ‘Toolkit’ case. Reportedly, they were involved in the creation, editing and distribution of the toolkit that details a global plan to destabilise India. Now, Nikita Jacob, who was thus far absconding, has filed for an anticipatory bail in the High Court.

Advocate Nikita Jacob has filed an anticipatory bail plea before the Bombay High Court fearing arrest in connection with the Delhi Police’s case against the toolkit creators. Reportedly, Nikita Jacob has stated in her plea that she had no intentions of inciting violence, as alleged by the Delhi Police.

Interestingly, it seems like Jacob and her lawyers have come up with an interesting reason to ensure that her digital footprint is not looked into by the Delhi Police. In her petition, Nikita Jacob has claimed that the electronic devices seized by the Delhi Police had confidential information that would breach attorney-client privilege if they are looked into.

Jacob has claimed that she is ready to cooperate with the investigation and has sought transit anticipatory bail for a period of 4 weeks from the date of the HC order and a copy of the FIR. Speaking to Republic TV, Jacob’s lawyer Sanjukta Dey refuted the charge that her client is absconding and revealed that the Bombay HC will hear the matter on Tuesday.

Nikita Jacob spoke to Khalistani Mo Dhaliwal, says Delhi Police

As per the reports, the two activists Disha Ravi (who has now been arrested) and Nikita Jacob (who is now reportedly absconding) took part in an online meeting with Poetic Justice Foundation’s Mo Dhaliwal, who had earlier declared that he is a ‘proud Khalistani’, to discuss and plan a Twitter storm ahead of India’s Republic Day, which saw a massive insurrection attempt and widespread violence by so-called farmers in Delhi. In the Zoom meeting, the group had formulated a plan to post messages, graphics and videos ahead of Republic Day to spread their propaganda against India in the background of farmer protests.

Zee News reported that during the meeting in which Mo Dhaliwal was one of the attendees, it was planned how they could agitate the farmers and spread violence on the Republic Day. Mo Dhaliwal had said that they have to make the issue visible on the international platform. To ensure they succeed in their plan, they decided to contact celebrities, including Greta Thunberg, Rihanna and others.

Greta Thunberg Toolkit case

On February 4, Swedish ‘Andolanjeevi’ Greta Thunberg had shared a ‘toolkit’ on Twitter that had step-by-step instructions on how her followers can ‘support’ farmers protests. The file had several interlinked documents dated back months. The connection between the pro-Khalistani organization, Poetic Justice Foundation, raised questions over the authenticity of the support Greta was providing for the Farmer Protests. The toolkit provided a detailed roadmap to organise widespread support and mobilisation to create nation-wide protests in India. It also stressed a lot about organising a campaign that would see India’s image besmirched on the world stage.

After the backlash, Greta removed the tweet and posted an edited version claiming the old file was outdated. Delhi Police recently arrested one Disha Ravi from Bengaluru who had allegedly helped create the toolkit and shared with Greta. Disha is a founding member of Fridays for Future’s India’s chapter, Greta Thunberg’s NGO. Delhi Police also said that Disha allegedly asked Greta to remove the toolkit from her Twitter profile.

A High Court Lawyer and activist from Mumbai, Nikita Jacob was one of the editors of Greta Thunberg Toolkit. It has been alleged that she was Aam Aadmi Party member as well. While checking the documents, it came to light that Nikita Jacob had been allegedly editing documents much before it got viral on social media platforms, thanks to Thunberg. After her name appeared in the reports, Jacob had deleted her social media accounts.

It is notable here that after the ‘toolkit’ drew sharp reaction from the public and government officials in India. especially because of the Red Fort violence, Google had agreed to provide details of individuals who have been involved in the creation and editing of the document on its platform to the Indian government.

Government removes restrictions on mapping, industry experts welcome step: Here is what it means

For any country, maps and accurate geospatial data are crucial for national infrastructure projects including river linkage, development of industrial corridors, deployment of smart power systems and more. Maps with greater precision, depth and resolution provide essential support to Digital India, Smart Cities, eCommerce, autonomous drones, delivery, logistics and urban transport. The applications with high-precision geospatial data help small businesses, farmers, construction companies, mining and local enterprises etc. in formulating a better plan for an economically sustainable future.

The issue with the present mapping system in India

Any Indian company that want to create or disseminate maps need to get the proper license and follow a cumbersome system of pre-approvals and permissions. Compliance with these regulatory restrictions has subjected startups in India to unnecessary red tape, hindering Indian innovation in map technologies for decades.

Radical liberalisation of mapping policy

To ensure Indian companies have unhindered access to the geospatial data, the government has radically liberalised the mapping policy. The government believes that what is readily available globally should not be restricted in India. Thus, as per the new policy, the geospatial data will be freely available for Indian companies. The corporations and innovators will not be subject to restrictions not do they will require prior approvals before collecting, generating, preparing, disseminating, storing, publishing, updating digital Geospatial Data and Maps within the territory of India.

In a series of tweets, PM Modi said, “Our government has taken a decision that will provide a huge impetus to Digital India. Liberalising policies governing the acquisition and production of geospatial data is a massive step in our vision for an Aatmanirbhar Bharat.”

The government will trust the startups and mapping innovators to self-certify and apply sound judgement. They will be relied upon to demonstrate adherence to guidelines. The government will take measures to promote the development of Indian geospatial innovations that take advantage of the latest map-making technologies. The new policy will enable Indian innovators to create substantial advances in mapping, ultimately making our lives easier and empowering small businesses.

‘Indian Startups will revolutionise mapping’

The changes in mapping policy are being seen as a welcoming step by the corporate world. Product Nation, a technology think tank said that the Indian Startups will revolutionise mapping and it will create thousands of jobs. It added, “Next-generation hyper resolution maps will happen. $Billions value unlocked, thousands of jobs.”

Sanjeev Sanyal, writer and collector of old maps said that this is the first time since Rennel and the East India Company, this sector is open to private innovation.

The negative list of sensitive attributes

There are some speculations over security concerns with such liberalisation of the mapping system. The government has already considered the sensitivity of selected attributes. Made-in-India alternative of Google Maps

Recently, ISRO and MapmyIndia joined hands to build an alternative to Google maps with ‘make in India’ mapping portal and geospatial services. As per reports, ISRO with MMI will develop a fully indigenous, made-in-India mapping portal and geospatial services. ISRO in a statement said: “The collaboration will enable them to jointly identify and build holistic geospatial solutions utilising the earth observation datasets, “NavIC”, Web Services and APIs (application programming interface) available in MapmyIndia, “Bhuvan”, “VEDAS” and “MOSDAC” geoportals.” Through the combined partnership with ISRO, MapmyIndia’s end-user maps, apps and services will now integrate with ISRO’s huge catalogue of satellite imagery and earth observation data.

Half knowledge is a dangerous thing: How Disha Ravi spread misinformation and blatant lies to defame India on a global platform

21-year-old Disha Ravi from Bengaluru works in a plant-based food startup Goodmylk and is a graduate in business administration, specialising in finance. A course she picked up ‘despite her dislike for capitalism’. In an hour-long interview with writer Gayle Kimball, sometime in mid-2020, Ravi blames ‘patriarchy’ for rapes and paints a picture of doom. Kimball is a US-based writer and Professor Emerita at California State University.

Ravi, in her conversation claims that social evils such as child marriages, dowry, domestic violence and honour killing are common and socially acceptable despite laws against it. She claims that these evil practices are ingrained. She further claims that when some women escape bad marriages and return home, her own family members kill her as ‘honour killing’. “The mercy killing is done by the own family of the women because they feel like she brought dishonour to the family and it is completely acceptable to kill her for that,” she claims about women who are victims of domestic abuse.

On migrant crisis, Ravi blatantly lies about lack of financial support provided to migrant workers and the poor during the pandemic. Various state government as well as central government provided various forms of assistance to the poor including free ration all the way till November 2020. She even spread lies that migrant workers were put on trucks with dead bodies of those who passed away due to coronavirus and were being sent home.

Speaking on the Modi government, the interviewer questions Ravi why did the Indians select and re-elect him despite ‘Hindu nationalism’ and him having a wife ‘people hardly know about’. To this Ravi claims that the Modi government is a very right wing party and he was able to make people understand about his aims. “He convinced the larger population that Muslims for some reason are, somehow they are doing something wrong and the press is controlled by him. So most of the press is right wing. My parents support him, I don’t. Everyone who does not support him is silenced in the most horrific way and it is not shown in mainstream media. You have to go to alternative press,” she claims.

She claims there is ‘next to no freedom of the press’ In India. She claims that because of this ‘no freedom of the press’, PM Modi has ‘convinced’ everyone that what he is doing is good. She claims India is slipping on human growth. The lady taking the interview interjects and claims that PM Modi’s prime goal seems economic development and does not seem to be caring about consequences.

In her obvious hate towards the Modi government, Ravi claims that during US former President Donald Trump’s visit to India last year, there was a huge human right violation. She insinuates that the Modi government had gathered a paid crowd to pull off the huge rally to welcome Trump to India. She furthers that students of a particular college, predominantly Muslims, were attacked, then. However, the mainstream media had covered Modi welcoming Trump, as Modi had spent too much money on it, says Ravi.

The fact, however, is that the campuses of a few colleges like Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University turned violent after the provocative speeches during the anti-CAA protests. The CAA fast-tracks Indian citizenship for persecuted religious minorities in three neighbouring Islamic countries: Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. It does not affect Indians, irrespective of their religion. Despite that, huge mobs gathered, mostly consisting of Muslims, to protest against CAA. Eventually, these protests turned violent and culminated into riots just when the then US President Donald Trump was visiting India.

Surprisingly, in her interview to the foreign lady, Disha talks about farmers and depleting ground water levels and erratic weather conditions because of which farmers have had to commit suicide. She says how climate change has affected the lives of Indian farmers. Ironically, few months later when the union government passed the new laws which aims to help farmers with better storage facility, crop mix and subsequently help fight climate change while increasing their incomes, she has decided to protest against these very laws!

Speaking on Aadhaar card, the climate activist claims that the government has exploited the marginalised people for their lack of knowledge. She claims that though the cost to acquire a Aadhaar card is minimal, the government has fleeced the poor by charging them way too much than the prescribed cost. This is a blatant lie. Aadhaar can be made only at Aadhaar centres and enrolment as well as mandatory biometric update is absolutely free of charge. You can check the rates here [pdf].

While discussing how the ‘activists’ connect for various protests, she mentions how they rely on emails, Zoom calls, Telegram and apps like Slack to coordinate. She says that the ‘activists’ share “toolkits” on various channels and discuss what is happening in each others countries, and on how they can support each other. She says that there are various teams where they could reach out to ‘activists’ of other countries to get them to talk about these ‘issues’ on their social media channels.

Ravi claims that India does not acknowledge global climate crisis. She claims that one of the demands of climate activists in India is to get the government to ‘acknowledge’ that climate crisis is an issue. However, this, too, is far from reality. India is one of the signatories to the 21st Conference of the Parties 21 (CoP 21) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) held in Paris in 2015 which has the main objective of limiting global warming to below 2 degree, preferably 1.5 degree Celsius.

When the interviewer further asks Disha Ravi as to how optimistic she is about the future of India and its efforts to tackle the climate crisis, she paints an extremely negative picture of India claiming that the amount of environmentally destructive projects, especially the huge deforestation projects during the COVID-19 lockdown, which the Modi government is itself approving, does not give a positive vibe about the country. However, she does not give details on which deforestation programmes approved by Modi government she is talking about.

She furthers that there is an urgent need for a change of the government, but at the same time, there are no existing ruling parties that are also capable of tackling the environmental crisis, says Ravi. She even dismisses Congress being helpful in tackling environment crisis.

The lady taking the interview questions on what Disha Ravi thinks about the “progressive party which got elected in Delhi and then faded out”. The activist helps the interviewer by giving her the name of Aam Aadmi Party. Ravi seconds the interviewer’s opinion. She agrees that the AAP is “definitely progressive”, but the issue is that it is only central to Delhi and not in any other city, so they are not being able to make a political shift in all the cities and states across the country. “There are a few issues with the Aam Aadmi Party, but they are definitely better than the others”, says the activist putting her weight behind AAP.

Comparing India’s political scenario to that of the USA, the interviewer asks Ravi whether situation is similar to that of America “where many liberals do not vote which aids ‘Trump kind of guys’ to get elected”. Ravi claims that there are many people in India also who do not vote, despite being eligible to vote and that is why the Modi government exists. She claims that since PM Narendra Modi has his way with words and is able to capture the audience, that’s why quite a few young people and even some conservatives support him.

Delhi Police has arrested the 21-year old ‘climate activist’ Disha Ravi from Bengaluru in connection with the ‘Greta toolkit’ that exposed global conspiracy to defame India on a global scale.

According to Delhi Police, the so-called activist was the Editor of the Toolkit Google Doc, which was accidentally leaked on Twitter by Swedish activist Greta Thunberg. As per reports, Disha created a Whatsapp group and actively collaborated to prepare the ‘Toolkit’ document. The Delhi Police further informed that she worked closely in creating the draft which revealed global conspiracy to defame India.

During the initial investigation, the police found that Disha Ravi also collaborated with Khalistani outfit named Poetic Justice Foundation (PJF). The police informed that the objective was to spread ‘disaffection against the Indian State.’ Reportedly, it was Disha who had originally shared the Toolkit document with the Swedish activist Greta Thunberg.

Update: Kimball has since publication of our report made the video private. We have updated the story with the video.

Ashwin shows ex-English captain Michael Vaughan that it is about the ‘performance’ and not the ‘pitch’

After the Indian cricket team bundled up the visiting English side for a paltry score of 134 runs in the 1st innings of the Second Test match at Chennai, former English captain Michael Vaughan decided to blame the ‘pitch’ for the disastrous performance of the team.

“It’s entertaining cricket as things are happening all the time but let’s be honest this Pitch is a shocker,” he claimed on Sunday. Michael Vaughan further alleged that the pitch was not suitable for a 5-day Test match. He further remarked, “Not making any excuses as India have been better but this isn’t a Test Match 5 day prepared Pitch.”

However, Michael Vaughan was up for a rude shock on Monday when Indian spin bowler Ravichandran Ashwin outclassed the English side, with a stellar batting performance, during the second innings. As India headed into the third day of the Test match, it had a healthy lead of 195 runs. But, the ‘dirt’ pitch had begun deteriorating further, making it an ideal bowling condition than what it was already for the likes of English spin bowlers such as Moeen Ali and Jack Leach.

At the end of 36.1 overs, India was down by 6 wickets with just 106 runs on the scoreboard. And then came Ashwin to bat alongside the Indian skipper Virat Kohli. The duo took the score to 156 runs by the end of the lunch break. Both Kohli and Ashwin completed their half-century with ease. When the skipper got dismissed at 62, the fans believed it to be the end of the Indian innings. However, on a pitch providing dramatic bounce and turn, Ashwin displayed his finesse as a bowling allrounder.

Ashwin comes to India’s rescue

With the support of tailenders holding on the other end, the ace spin bowler beautifully paced his innings, exhibited great defence and played exquisite shots to reach a total of 106 runs in 146 balls. During his majestic innings that diminished the slightest of chances for the English side to make a comeback, Ashwin hit 14 fours and 1 six. He exuberated such confidence that even the 11th batsman Mohammed Siraj pulled off two majestic sixes.

By the time, the Indian team was all out, England was left with a mammoth target of 482 runs. Ashwin thus joined the elite list of Test players, who scored a century in the same match where they took a 5-wicket haul. The Indian spin bowler, who is just shy of 400 wickets, has shown the English side that being able to quickly adapt to the turning conditions could have helped save the Test match.

The England cricket team failed to adapt to the wicket or capitalise on their spin bowling attack. With a target of 429 runs and just 7 wickets remaining at the end of third day’s play, a defeat for the visiting side is inevitable. Ashwin showed that while pitch might be favourable or non-favourable, it’s the performance that matters in the end.

Shane Warne gives befitting reply to Michael Vaughan

While replying to Vaughan, Warne replied, “The toss was more important to win in the 1st test than this one, as it did nothing the 1st 2 days. Then exploded. This one has been a turner from ball one.” He said, “England should’ve bowled India out for 220. No different between spinning or seaming & Rohit showed how to play on this surface.”

He further stated, “Everyone should celebrate the amazing test cricket we are/have witnessed from all countries over the past few months. It’s exciting. The best bowlers/batsman will rise no matter what the pitch conditions or situation of the game. My prediction was (India 359/ England 157=202 run lead) it’s 195.”
