The admission comes at a time when there is a growing consensus that Facebook and other tech giants removed Donald Trump from their platforms based on their personal political biases. In response to a tweet that claimed that Facebook was undermined by its penchant towards appearing neutral, the head of Instagram said, “We’re not neutral. No platform is neutral, we all have values and those values influence the decisions we make. We try and be apolitical, but that’s increasingly difficult, particularly in the US where people are more and more polarized.”

The discussion occurred over an announcement by Facebook Vice-President Nick Clegg that civil rights attorney Roy L. Austin Jr. had been appointed as the first VP of Civil Rights at the company. Austin has previously worked for the Obama administration. Clegg said that Austin will establish Facebook’s new civil rights team.

The honest admission comes at a time when tech giants are engaging in censorship of Donald Trump and his aides, including his supporters. Amazon, Google and Apple together pushed Parler, an alternative social media platform committed to Freedom of Speech, offline after Donald Trump opened an account there after being banned from everywhere else.

Tech giants have been trying hard to maintain the pretense that such extravagant censorship measures were necessitated by the recent riots at Capitol Hill but the consensus is that it has gone too far. And now, after the admission by Adam Mosseri, it will become even harder to deny that the actions were motivated by personal political biases since all these platforms did absolutely nothing when left-wing mobs were burning down businesses and prominent individuals in the mainstream media and Democrat party were instigating the mob and justifying the riots.

PM Modi warns politicians not to jump queues for Covid vaccine but wait for their turn, warns against fake news and rumours

At a meeting with state Chief Ministers ahead of the Coronavirus vaccine rollout, PM Narendra Modi emphasised on Monday that politicians should not jump queue to take the vaccine but wait for their turn. He said that the government has prepared a priority list for the first phase of vaccination and underscored that the plan be followed to the tee. He said that no political leaders, at any cost, should misuse their privilege to skip lines to procure the COVID-19 vaccines for themselves or their family and relatives.

He said that the priority list will be headed by one crore health workers and two crore frontline workers like the police, civil defense personnel and sanitation workers, for whom the vaccines will be free. The other high-risk groups, people above the age of 50 years and those below it who have co-morbidities like diabetes and hypertension, will also be vaccinated in this phase, starting January 16. Overall, 30 crore people will receive the vaccine in this phase.

Addressing the rumours floating around the efficacy of the “Made in India” vaccines, the PM said that the call for vaccination process to begin has been taken after “scientific validation” and their final opinion. He advised people to refrain from spreading false information and fake news regarding the vaccines.

“All States and UTs must ensure that rumours around the vaccination programme are not allowed to spread. Corporate competition and vested interests of certain lobbies within and outside the country may be at work to fuel the rumours,” PM Modi said.

He also said that both the vaccines, Covishield and Covaxin, are “more cost-effective”, adding that dependency on foreign vaccines could have been costly for us.

Proud that India will start the world’s largest vaccination programme from January 16: PM Modi

PM Modi said that while the opposition was taking a dig at him that India is sleeping while other nations have been vaccinating its people, Modi said that he was proud that India will start the world’s largest vaccination programme from January 16.

He alluded that in the coming few months almost 30 crore people in India would be vaccinated and India has taken several measures in the past few months to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted vaccination process. “We will be setting a precedence for the rest of the world, which will in future, adopt similar measure like India”, said PM Narendra Modi.

He congratulated the CMs of the states during the virtual meet by saying: “I’m satisfied that we worked together by standing united in COVID crisis, quick decisions were taken with full sensitivity. As a result, COVID has not spread in India on the scale, on which it spread anywhere else in the world.”

Digital platform named Co-Win has been created for Covid-19 vaccine registration and monitoring, said PM Modi

Modi informed that the most important aspect of this vaccination campaign is the identification and monitoring of those who have to be vaccinated. For this, a digital platform named Co-Win has been created using modern technology. “We’ve made necessary preparations for patients if the COVID vaccine shows any side-effects. We already have a mechanism under the Universal Immunization Programme for situations such as these. We’ve strengthened it specifically for COVID vaccination”, said Modi in the virtual meeting today.

Apart from the two already approved vaccines, four others are in the pipeline, informed the PM.

“After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence,” Twitter had said.

Leaders across the world are condemning the manner in which Trump’s account was suspended by the platform. The spokesperson of German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the leader considers the decision “problematic”.

The fundamental right to freedom of opinion, according to spokesperson Steffen Seibert, “can be intervened in, but according to the law and within the framework defined by legislators — not according to a decision by the management of social media platforms.” “Seen from this angle, the chancellor considers it problematic that the accounts of the U.S. president have now been permanently blocked.”

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who leans towards the Left himself, said, “How can you censor someone? Let’s see, I, as the judge of the Holy Inquisition, will punish you because I think what you’re saying is harmful? Where is the law, where is the regulation, what are the norms? This is an issue of government. This is not an issue for private companies.”

Earlier this morning, AAP MLA Somnath Bharti flew into a rage and dished out a death threat to Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath after an unidentified person hurled ink at him while he was haranguing police officers who had detained him in a guesthouse.

Bharti had reached the guesthouse last night and was all set to visit government schools in Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli when the police officers stopped him moving out. A heated altercation ensued wherein Bharti threatened the police officers of getting them sacked from their jobs.

As Bharti continued badgering the police officers to let him visit the government schools, an unknown man hurled ink at the AAP leader and managed to escape away. The incident raised Somnath’s hackles and he resorted to issuing threats to UP CM Yogi Adityanath.

“Nothing is going to happen from this. Yogi Adityanath’s death is assured. You have helped the attacker escape. You need to understand this. Tell Yogi Adityanath he would not achieve anything from such attacks,” said Somnath Bharti while giving a mouthful to police officers.

Apparently, Bharti, along with senior AAP leaders such as Arvind Kejriwal and Sanjay Singh, alleged that the attack was carried out at the behest of UP CM Yogi Adityanath, who was afraid of the AAP MLA’s visit to the government schools that would ‘expose’ to halt the AAP MLA from ‘exposing’ the state of government schools in Uttar Pradesh.

Bharti was sent to judicial custody for 14 days after he was seen misbehaving with on-duty police officers and issuing death threats to UP CM Yogi Adityanath.

Nevertheless, this is not the first time that AAP leader Somnath Bharti has embroiled himself in an avoidable controversy. There have been several incidents in the past when the Malviya Nagar MLA has got himself in hot water and embarrassed himself and his party.

Bharti and his dog accused of domestic violence by wife Lipika

The former Law Minister of Delhi, Somnath Bharti and his pet dog ‘Don’ were accused of domestic violence by his wife Lipika in 2015. She had then alleged that Somnath Bharti had unleashed dogs on her when she was pregnant and inflicted on her grave mental and physical torture. Lipika had alleged that Don had bitten her on the directions of her husband Somnath Bharti.

Additionally, she had also alleged in her complaint to the Delhi Women Commission that Bharti had forced her to go for abortion when she had become pregnant for the third time and she had once tried to give up her life by slitting her wrist to end the ceaseless torture meted out by Bharti on her.

In her complaint, Lipika had levelled serious charges against Somnath Bharti, accusing him of domestic violence, mental torture, dowry and forgery against him. The couple had reportedly met on Shaadi.com and Bharti had allegedly lied to her that he owned an international law firm, the complaint mentioned.

After a complaint was lodged, Somnath Bharti and his pet dog ‘Don’ was summoned to appear before the police at Dwarka North police station.

However, a city court gave Don a clean chit the same year, stating that the allegation of the canine biting Lipika was unfounded.

Khirki extension raid: Court orders framing of molestation charges against Somnath Bharti

In July 2018, a Delhi court ordered framing of charges against former Delhi law minister Somnath Bharti in connection with his alleged involvement in the 2014 midnight raid at Khirki Extension in New Delhi.

The charges were framed for the offences of molestation, assault, threat, promoting enmity, rioting and others under the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The charges under sections 147/149 (rioting), 354 (molestation), 354C (voyeurism), 342 (wrongful confinement), 506 (criminal intimidation), 143 (unlawful assembly), 509 (outraging a woman’s modesty), 153A (promoting enmity between two groups or religions), 323 (assault), 452 (house trespass), 427 (criminal trespass) and 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) of the IPC were framed against the accused.

An FIR was lodged in the case on court’s direction after one of the victims of the assault, a Ugandan woman, had filed a plea on January 18, 2014. She had sought lodging of a criminal case against unknown persons in the incident.

On the intervening night of 15-16 January 2014, a mob allegedly led by AAP leader Somnath Bharti and 16 others reached Khirki Extension, Malviya Nagar and purportedly assaulted Ugandan women living in rented accommodation there.

Somnath Bharti asks a woman journalist to become a prostitute

In addition to the aforementioned incidents, Somnath Bharti was also involved in one more incident where he shunned his moral propriety and asked a woman journalist to become a prostitute.

In November 2018, while interacting with a female journalist Ranjana from Sudarshan News, Bharti lost his cool. He asked her to ‘stop doing bh*dwagiri’ followed by directing her to become a prostitute.

Somnath Bharti was speaking on the incident where a man allegedly threw red chilli powder on Delhi chief Arvind Kejriwal. He got personal with the journalist, following which he threatened that the channel will close down after 2019, “yeh bh*dwagiri chalegi nahin, 2019 ka intezar kar lo.”

When the journalist reminded him to maintain dignity while speaking, he accused the journalist of misbehaving on camera. When the journalist asked him to apologise, he accused her of acting like a middleman for the BJP. He then asked her to stop doing the ‘bh*dwagiri’ and ‘dh*ndhe pe baith jao‘, which in crude Hindi is akin to asking her to become a prostitute.

Senior Aam Aadmi Party leader Somnath Bharti has been sent to judicial custody for 14 days after misbehaving with police officials in Uttar Pradesh. Ink was thrown at him while he was on his way to visit government schools in Rae Bareli. Following the ink attack, an enraged Bharti resorted to dishing out death threats to Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath.

Somnath Bharti said, “Shocked to learn that my bail application has been kept pending till 13th January n I am sent to judicial custody of 14 days.” “Nothing is going to happen from this. Yogi Adityanath’s death is assured. You have helped the attacker escape. You need to understand this. Tell Yogi Adityanath he would not achieve from such attacks,” Somnath Bharti had said earlier in the day.

 The AAP leader was attacked while he was embroiled in a heated argument with a police officer who had stopped him from visiting the schools. After the incident, Bharti was detained in the guest house itself while the man who threw ink on him managed to escape.

“I will get you sacked. Bear this in mind. I can identify all of you. I will get all the officers who are trying to stop me today sacked,” said Somnath Bharti while threatening the police officer who stopped him from leaving the guesthouse.

SAT orders NDTV founders Prannoy Roy and wife Radhika to deposit 50% of disgorged amount in 4 weeks

The trouble for NDTV founders Prannoy Roy and his wife, Radhika Roy, is only increasing with every passing day. In a new development, the Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) has directed the two to deposit 50 per cent of the disgorged amount, earned fraudulently through insider trading of NDTV shares, before market regulator SEBI within four weeks.

It furthered that if NDTV deposits the said amount within the stipulated time, the media network would not be required to make the payment of the balance amount during the pendency of the appeal before SAT. According to SEBI orders, the total amount that couple needs to shelf out, either jointly or individually, amounts to Rs 16.97 crore along with 6% interest per annum.

The tribunal, in two separate orders passed on January 4, noted that the appeals filed by the Roy couple needed consideration and directed the appeals to be listed before the tribunal for final disposal on February 10, 2021. 

SEBI forbids Prannoy Roy and Radhika Roy from trading in the securities market for two years

It is pertinent to note here that NDTV founders Prannoy Roy and his wife, Radhika Roy had filed an appeal against a SEBI order passed in November, barring the couple from trading in the securities market for two years, and directed them to return the illegal gain of Rs 16.97 crore they had made from the insider trading more than 12 years ago.

According to an investigation conducted by SEBI, the two have violated the Prohibition of Insider Trading (PIT) Regulations. They are accused of possessing Unpublished Price Sensitive Information (UPSI) during 2007-2008 relating to discussion on reorganization of New Delhi Television Ltd.

The duo had reportedly bought 48,35,850 NDTV shares on December 26, 2007 at the rate of ₹400per share. On April 17, 2008, they sold 49,13,676 shares at the rate of ₹435.10per share. Therefore, they made a gain of ₹16,97,38,335 on the 48,35,850 shares bought during the UPSI period.

Besides the duo, India’s capital market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has also found the media network’s CEO Vikramaditya Chandra, senior advisor Ishwari Prasad Bajpai, group CFO Saurav Banerjee guilty of making undue gain from insider trading.

In the tweet, the current Prime Minister of Canada says that his staff is working to solve what he calls a “Porn site QR code problem”. That has attracted sarcastic and funny comments from users.

We looked into the matter in order to understand what precisely was Trudeau’s “Porn site QR code problem”. And we chanced upon quite the hilarious story. Steve Faguy, a Montreal Gazette copy editor, reported in April 2011 on his personal website that the QR code on the posters of Justin Trudeau, who was the Liberal Party candidate for the Quebec riding of Papineau, led to a porn site.

Faguy reported, “Unfortunately for Trudeau, whoever generated the QR code for his campaign poster made a typo. Instead of typing in “liberal.ca” – the website for the Liberal Party of Canada – he or she typed in “luberal.ca”, the site of an organization devoted to “encouraging the liberal use of lube” in sexual encounters.”

He said that the Trudeau’s campaign staff was rushing to fix the problem. The report is probably what prompted Justin Trudeau to make the announcement on Twitter. Fortunately, however, there is a catch. The report was published on the 1st of April and as it turns out, it was an April Fools’ prank.

A short while later, Trudeau commented on the blog post, “Very cute. Got me for a sec, I almost called my office in a panic, until I remembered it was April 1st. And the QR code actually links to justin.ca.” Thus, it appears that the King of Gaffes did not commit a gaffe on this occasion after all.

Ahead of the upcoming elections in the State of West Bengal, Trinamool Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Shekhar Roy has stirred a controversy by threatening violence against ‘outsiders’.

While speaking to ANI, Sukhendu referred to BJP leaders, campaigning in the State, as ‘outsiders.’ He warned that if the ‘outsiders’ try to disrupt the peace in West Bengal, then, Bengalis will rise up against them and might resort to armed resistance. “Prior to polls, you will see an influx of outsiders like that of BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya. Soon, the BJP leader who said, ‘goli maaro’ would land here and send his goons with weapons,” the TMC leader alleged.

Sukhendu said, “I appeal to the people of West Bengal to refrain from listening to outsiders. If anyone tries to disrupt the ‘peace and harmony’ of the State, then, we will take all necessary steps to prevent it.” While highlighting the story of Sheikh Mujibur Rehman’s freedom struggle against Pakistan to justify ‘political violence’ by TMC goons, he emphasised, “Take up arms against the outsiders… We do not want to take up arms. But, remember, when Bengal starts an armed struggle, the whole country will shake.”

Reiterating the armed struggle of Bengali revolutionaries during the Indian Independence movement, Sukhendu said, “If outsiders such as Kailash Vijayvargiya come here with arms, then, we are ready to fight against the likes of him.” The Trinamool Congress is rattled ahead of the polls that are scheduled in April-May this year, with several heavyweight leaders deserting the party to join the BJP. They want to destroy the diversity of Bengal.”

Political violence in West Bengal against BJP

Recently, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had alleged that Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers vandalised BJP Leader Suvendu Adhikari’s Nandigram office. The incident took place on Saturday night. BJP has demanded that the persons behind the incident should be arrested. Kanisha Panda said that TMC was using muscle power against the BJP. He said, “We protested against an incident caused by TMC Harmad cadres at Nandigram. We want to say that they are using muscle power. The administration is with you and that’s why you are able to get away with it.”

Another BJP leader, Krishnendu Mukherjee, narrowly escaped an onslaught of bullets in Asansol, West Bengal. As per reports, the incident took place on Sunday night when three unidentified men, allegedly from the TMC, open fired at the BJP leader’s convoy near his residence in Hirapur in Asansol. According to Mukherjee, he was returning home from Kolkata and had stopped his car outside his residence. When his driver stepped out to open the gate, three armed gunmen fired bullets at his car, the marks of which are clearly visible on the vehicle.

Mumbai Police detains Elgar Parishad violence accused ‘activist’ Harshali Potdar for criticising state govt

The Mumbai police have today detained ‘activist’ Harshali Potdar, one of the accused in the Bhima Koregaon case for a case registered against her in MRA Marg Police Station for sharing a controversial social media post against the state government during the coronavirus lockdown. The detention came after sessions court on Wednesday rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Potdar. The news was shared on the microblogging site by the official Twitter handle of Bhima Koregaon Shourya Din Prerana Abhiyan’s Elgar Parishad 2021.

The organisation also took to its official Facebook page to reshare a post by a frontal organization of banned terrorist organization CPI (Maoist), Kabir Kala Manch, which alleged that the Mumbai police had implicated Harshali Potdar in a fake case.

According to reports, the sessions court while rejecting Potdar’s anticipatory bail application, had also revoked the interim protection granted to her by the court on August 29 last year.

Police had booked Potdar, in April 2020 for spreading enmity between two groups and doing acts prejudicial to peace and harmony through her social media post.

Potdar had allegedly shared a Facebook post written by Mohsin Shaikh, that criticised the state government for targeting Tablighi Jamaat and the Muslim community for spreading corona.

Fearing arrest, she had moved a pre-arrest bail plea before a sessions court here on August 27, 2020. Advocate Ishrat Khan, appearing for Potdar, had submitted that no case is made out against her. The lawyer had told the court that the entire case was bogus and alleged that since she is a social worker, the prosecution intends to implicate her in false cases.

Harshali Potdar named as accused in Bhima Koregaon case by Pune police

It may be recalled that Harshali Potdar’s name had also appeared in one of the FIRs registered by Pune police in connection with 2017 Bhima Koregaon Elgar Parishad case. Potdar’s name had emerged in the draft charges filed by Pune police in December 2019, against 19 out of the 23 accused booked in the Elgar Parishad case under sections of the IPC and Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) for their alleged links with the banned CPI (Maoist).

According to the draft charges, the accused allegedly conspired “to incite people and create violence and to spread disaffection towards government established by law”. It also mentioned that the accused allegedly “conspired to wage a war against the government of India and state government… organised Rs 8 crore for annual supply of M4 (sophisticated weapon) with 4 lakh rounds and others arms, ammunition through designated supplier from Nepal and Manipur and conspired to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the lines of Rajiv Gandhi-type incident during his roadshows.” 

What is the Bhima Koregaon Elgar Parishad Case?

The event by the name of “Elgar Parishad” was organised to commemorate the Battle of Bhima Koregaon of 1818, wherein the Peshwas fought against the between East India Company. In the war, an army of Dalit soldiers had fought under the British forces against the Peshwa, the reason for the celebration by Dalits. In 2018, it was the 200 year anniversary of the war and extreme violence erupted over the matter.

Soon after, the case was transferred to the NIA. So far, 16 people have been arrested in the case as accused — Jyoti Raghoba Jagtap, Sagar Tatyaram Gorkhe, Ramesh Murlidhar Gaichor, Sudhir Dhawale, Surendra Gadling, Mahesh Raut, Shoma Sen, Rona Wilson, Arun Ferreira, Sudha Bharadwaj, Varavara Rao, Vernon Gonsalves, Anand Teltumbde, Gautam Navlakha, Hany Babu and Father Stan Swamy.

Glenn Greenwald said, “One thing that we are seeing clearly is the initiation of a new ‘War on Terror’.” The ‘War on Terror’ refers to the military adventure that the USA embarked upon in the wake of the 9/11 terror attacks in Iraq and Afghanistan and other territories against terrorists.

Glenn Greenwald said that he fears a ‘War on Terror’ on Trump supporters because there are sufficient indications that the Biden administration will legislate a new terror law that will end up curbing civil liberties. He noted that all the actions that constitute domestic terrorism are already criminalized, therefore, what they actually seek is a new law to curb civil liberties.

“What they want to do is increase their power to monitor political groups, infiltrate them, to criminalize activities that are currently not criminalized nor should they be, whether it be advocacy of speech or other things,” Greenwald said.

He also said that people associated with Joe Biden are saying explicitly that the new law being discussed will not be applied to non-state actors or foreign citizens, it is going to be directed at Americans. He said that the strategy so far has been clear regarding what happens when Donald Trump leaves office, who has been extremely profitable for them.

Their strategy is “to inflate the risk of what they call ‘White Supremacist Terrorism’ which increasingly means nothing more than being a Trump supporter and then treating people in the United States who fall into that category the way you treat terrorists.” “You monitor them, you surveil them, you restrain them, you detain them and this is what they are saying explicitly,” Glenn Greenwald said.
