Aligarh Muslim University: Little has changed between then and now

Recently, a huge controversy has erupted over Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s portrait being hung at Aligarh Muslim University. Many wondered why even after 70 years of independence does an Indian University honour a person who was integral to the partition of the country in 1947. However, when one looks at the history of the AMU and its founder, it becomes evident that it’s indeed natural for them to have a portrait of Jinnah.

Anand Ranganathan, author and columnist, in his tweet series on Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, the founder of the AMU, exposes the many deplorable views that the man seemed to harbour.

Sir Syed Ahmad Khan also stated that it was the duty of Muslims to be loyal to the British empire. He even called the Revolt of 1857 an act of ‘haramzadgi’. He even asserted that being subjects of the British Empire which was Christian was preferable to being that of the Hindus as the former were ‘people of the book’.

And who could ever forget that Sir Syed Ahmad Khan was indeed the first true proponent of the Two Nation Theory. He even asserted that it was ‘impossible and inconceivable’ for Hindus and Muslims to coexist peacefully and it was necessary for one to vanquish the other.

Under such circumstances, it is only natural for a University that had Sir Syed Ahmad Khan as its founder and continues to eulogize him to continue to have a portrait of Jinnah. It is no wonder that the student organization of a university that recently objected to the administration’s invite to President Kovind for the convocation ceremony continues to have Jinnah’s portrait in its walls, a man who was responsible for millions of deaths.

The manner in which Jinnah’s portrait disappeared after the controversy erupted is really intriguing as well. And more intriguing was the administration’s response on the matter. According to the authorities, the portrait was taken off as clean was in progress. And then, they claimed AMU is a ‘secular’ institute. Of course, nothing proves that it is secular more than the fact that it hung the portrait of an individual who was responsible for the partition of the country.

It is a testament to the perverted vision of secularism in the country that Islamist figures such as Jinnah and Sir Syed Ahmad Khan are eulogized while even legitimate concerns of Hindus are deemed communal. And for the liberals of this country, Jinnah is more of an admirable and respectable persona than the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. A close aide of Arvind Kejriwal, Ram Subramanian, hailed Jinnah as a freedom fighter and asserted that every Indian should be proud of him.

The same perverted vision of secularism is also displayed when liberals did not utter so much as a whimper when a ten-year-old was raped at a Madrassa and members of a particular community suggested that the minor victim is married off to her rapist. And it is the same perverted vision of secularism when every transgression of the minority community is glossed over while every crime is communalized shamelessly to paint the minority as a victim and the majority as the aggressor.

Mainstream media outlets often wax eloquence on the ‘greatness’ of the man. In their bid to portray him as a ‘rationalist’, they ignore the foundations he laid for the partition of this country. In 70 years of independence, the contribution of the founder of the AMU to the propagation of Two Nations Theory is ignored while Hindutva ideologues are often blamed for the initial propagation of the theory. It is no wonder then that we have arrived at a time when the portrait of a man is hung at a university that claims to be secular.

India worships numerous false heroes who have been put on a pedestal where they cannot be questioned and any effort at scrutinizing their hallowed legacy is dubbed as fascism and bigotry. That the University that Sir Syed Ahmad Khan founded still honours a man who partitioned the country is merely a natural progression of affairs and that secularism in India still romanticizes Islamists and feels little hesitation in allying with Islamists to counter Hindu assertiveness.

Hyderabad High Court upholds life term awarded to Pakistan spy, Ashique Ali

According to a report, Hyderabad High Court has upheld the life sentence awarded by Nizamabad Trial Court in 2005 to Pakistani spy Ashique Ali alias Shahneel for allegedly transferring strategic defence information of India to Pakistani Army through mobile and emails.

Ali, a Pakistani national was arrested by the Nizamabad police on January 26, 2002, from the Jannapally Junction. It was alleged that he had conspired with Major Chaudry Zahid Ahmed, Hawaldar Mahemood and Hawaldar Tahir, all Pakistan nationals, with an intention to collect sensitive and strategic defence information related to Indian Armed Forces.

Ashique was sent to India on June 15, 2001, with a passport bearing No J-970511 and visa No P210841 under the charade of a tourist for 30-60 days to visit Delhi and Kanpur.

After entering Delhi via Samjhauta Express, Ashique destroyed his passport. In violation of rules, he visited Batala, Amritsar and Qadian in Punjab; Hyderabad and Nizamabad in then AP; and Mumbai and Nagpur in Maharashtra. This time, he was mailing sensitive information to Pakistan. Ashique overstayed in Hyderabad to collect Defence information and thereby violated provisions of sections 3 and 14 of the Foreigners Act. Finally, he was caught at a telephone booth while talking with Pakistani masters on the night of January 26, 2002, near Jannapally junction, Nizamabad.

The defence argued he lost his documents and could not go back. But to this, the Bench said, he ought to have informed this to police or concerned authorities to make arrangements for his migration. In absence of such attempts, his argument could not be accepted. The bench said the accused was liable under Section 14 of the Foreigners Act.

The police booked him under Section 121 and Section 121-A of the IPC and Section 14 of the Foreigners’ Act and also under Officials Secrets’ Act.

During the trial, the accused confessed that he communicated in cryptic language using ‘uncle’ as code for 54 division; ‘sons’ as units; ‘house nos.’  as a number of units;  ‘ name of colony’s place’ as code for the location of the units.

However, this not the first time that a Pakistani spy has been arrested for allegedly transferring important information across the border. In fact, in 2016 the Indian government had shared that more than 46 Pakistani spies had been arrested across India between the years 2013-16. Three Pakistani spies were nabbed in 2016 for getting information from people in BSF, taking the count higher. As a matter of fact, the loophole indubitably lies within the system. How do these outsiders get access to such confidential information lies the question?

Madras HC allows Income Tax department to proceed against Karti Chidambaram under Black Money Act

The Madras High Court has allowed the Income Tax department to proceed against Karti Chidambaram and others under the black money act. According to reports, the Madras HC on Thursday granted permission to the I-T department to probe Karti and other directors of the Chess Global Advisory Ltd under the act.

The HC bench comprising Justices V Bharatidasan and N Sheshasayee, however, has reportedly directed the Principal Director of Income -Tax (investigations) to let Karti Chidambaram and the others have a proper opportunity to present their case. The HC bench was hearing a petition filed by Karti and the other directors of the company against a show cause notice issued by the I-T department to them on April 13th. The bench has reportedly posted the matter to June 5th for further hearing.

According to reports, Karti and the other petitioners had also filed another petition challenging the validity of section 50 of the black money act mentioned in the show cause notice against them. The section 50 of the black money act concerns undisclosed foreign assets and income. The Principal Director of the I-T department reportedly had issued a show cause notice to Karti and the others asking why prosecution should not be sanctioned against them under the said act. The alleged undisclosed incomes and assets are related to the investments made by the concerned individuals through the company to Totus Tennis Ltd of UK and Nano Holdings LLC of the US. The petitioners had claimed that the I-T department has issued them the notice despite all the investments, remittances and holdings being disclosed in their I-T returns.

The petitioners had reportedly argued that the black money act can be warranted only if there are ‘undisclosed assets and incomes’. The HC bench in its order has reportedly asked the principal director of I-T to file a counter and proceed with any inquiry or take a decision exercising his powers under the section 55(1) of the black money act.

It is notable here that Karti is already facing probe and is currently on bail in the INX Media case and also under probe in the Aircel-Maxis case. On May 2nd, Delhi’s Patiala House Court had extended his interim protection from arrest till July 10.

Maoists blow up culvert in Bhadrachalam Agency, seek ‘revenge’ against security forces

In a recent incident, The Maoists have again resorted to violence in Bhadrachalam-Charla highway near Telangana-Chattisgarh border. The CPI (Maoist) had called for a state bandh in retaliation to the killings of Naxal terrorists by security forces in Dhandakaranya region. This is a repeated incident in less than a fortnight as they blew up another culvert at Pedamidisileru village in the same mandal on April 24.

The security forces intensified operations against Maoists. The successful operation near Gadchiroli in Maharashtra where more than 40 Naxal terror operatives have been killed has weakened the morale of both terrorists and their sympathisers. In another operation in Bijapur, in Chattisgarh, more than 7 terrorists have been killed. These operations have been considered as one of the best in four decades resulting in massive losses to Naxals.

Since then Maoists have been retaliating on different fronts. In a dangerous trend, posters and banners have been put up in Repanpalli in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district vowing revenge for the operations. The CPI (M) blamed the security forces and has warned of severe repercussions. The police have also published advertisements in Newspapers regarding price money of Rs 1.6 crore for information on five naxal leaders.

Banners of revenge

This worrying trend of retaliation is not limited to Naxal forces. Many left leaning journalists have condemned the counter-terror operations. An ex-journalist named Raosaheb Dokhe has called for revenge and urged Naxal forces to kill 400 policemen in responce to the neutralisation their ‘comrades’. In his post uploaded on his Facebook page late on Saturday afternoon, Pune-based Raosaheb Dokhe dubbed the twin anti-Naxal operations as “fake encounters” and said those killed in the two operations were not Maoists. Dokhe had urged: “Let us kill all those police, who killed our comrades brutally.”

A prominent activist and Naxal Sympathiser Nalini Sundar and wife of Siddarth Varadarajan has even mourned for the Naxals. Interestingly Nalini Sundar and four others are accused of the murder of a tribal man in Sukma district of Chattisgarh and she is out on bail.

Other Maoist-infested states besides Maharashtra — Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana are on a state of high alert, ever since the state security forces here launched their biggest anti-Maoist operations in around four decades.

Dishonest journalist creates an issue after alleging that her flight’s pilot was named Amit Shah

Journalist Saba Naqvi who has managed to make a name for herself for dishonest journalism, created an issue on Thursday evening, after tweeting her possible exasperation at her flight’s pilot being named ‘Amit Shah’:

As seen in the above tweet, Saba claimed that the pilot flying her Jet Airways flight to Bangalore was named Amit Shah, and either seriously or in jest expressed exasperation over the same. This was soon picked up by Twitter users, who decided to give it back to her for creating an issue out of a non-issue, thereby exposing her hatred:

While this could have been the end of the issue, but one twitter user claimed that he too had flown on the same flight and that the pilot wasn’t named Amit Shah:

We too decided to dig into the matter and searched the members list of Federation of Indian Pilots, a member body of Indian pilots to ascertain whether they had any pilot by the name of Amit Shah registered. Incidentally, that search didn’t throw up any such pilot name:

Dishonest journalist creates an issue after allegedly lying that her flight's pilot was named Amit Shah
Members list of Federation of Indian Pilots

Even variations like “Ameet Shah” or “Amit Saha” failed to throw up any matches:

Dishonest journalist creates an issue after allegedly lying that her flight's pilot was named Amit Shah
Members list of Federation of Indian Pilots
Dishonest journalist creates an issue after allegedly lying that her flight's pilot was named Amit Shah
Members list of Federation of Indian Pilots

A Google search though throws up a Linkedin profile of a First Officer named Amit Shah who claims to be working for Jet Airways, raising the question whether he was the one who had the ‘experience’ of flying Saba Naqvi.

People though might refuse to give Saba the benefit of the doubt, owing to her controversial past as a journalist. It was reported all the way back in 2016 how she was accused of blurring the lines between being a journalist and an AAP cheerleader.

New York Times, the lying sack of colonialists out to ‘civilise’ the ‘unwashed masses’ in India

0

New York Times is very fond of portraying India as the ‘perpetually wrong’. Stemming part from the inherent colonialistic culture that never stops looking down at the “poor unwashed brown people” and part from the leftist elitism that holds every aspect of an indigenous civilisation as backward, the paper not only indulges in frequent ‘India shaming’ but also has a knack of pontificating when it comes to real-world problems. That is problematic because virtue signalling is not a good practice when one’s own backyard is on fire.

Now, it is a different issue altogether as to what the New York Times is being called in their own country, but the recent op-ed about the Kathua rape case and the so-called need for a ‘MeToo’ movement India is part of the usual campaign that these papers run. Campaigns to selective outrage, misquotation and false information that often adorn their articles about India.

The article by Nicholas Kristof titled ‘#MeToo goes global‘ starts by discussing the Kathua rape and murder case. It is published on May 2nd, but a quick reading will tell you that the author has not even bothered to read up the latest updates or even tried to dig a little deeper in his hurry to malign ‘Hindu extremists’. First of all, the article names the victim, which, according to Indian law is a punishable offence. Ignoring the numerous reports that stated that the ‘Hindu Lawyers and Hindu housewives’ that he blames with impunity were, in fact, demanding better and independent investigation into the case, the author goes on to blame the Prime Minister for ‘keeping silent for too long’. Nowhere in the article has he mentioned the demand for a CBI inquiry by locals, the reports of targetted persecution and torture that was making the poor Hindus of the village leave their homes or the opposition to the illegal Rohingya settlements the lawyers and local leaders demanded that got so brilliantly and magically painted as ‘shielding the rapists’.

The realities of the Kathua case are now unravelling before everyone to see. No one, no group, Hindu or otherwise has supported or shielded the perpetrators, ever. The killing of the eight-year-old was barbaric and it deserves the strictest punishment, but the way the majority of Indian media, the privileged elite and the opposition has branded a group of women and activists of the region as ‘rape apologists’ is shameful.

The NYT article is just an elaborate and sophisticated version of the placards the Bollywood opportunistic outragers like Swara Bhaskar, Sonam Kapoor and Kareena were holding. The fact that the charge sheet contains gaping holes in the investigation,  the fact that the Indian ‘Hindu Nationalist’ government has now made amendments in the POCSO and rape laws that will ensure the strictest of punishment for the rapists, the fact that false blames and lies spread in the coverage of the case are now falling apart one by one all go conspicuously missing in the article. Mr Kristof should be asked one question, who does he think protected a rapist, locals demanding CBI inquiry or a state administration and media that is hell-bent on denying it? Indians did read it and react.

Coming to the MeToo movement that the article thinks the US should bestow upon the rest of the world, let us be practical, what exactly has the MeToo movement achieved so far, well, apart from celebrity endorsements and a lot of virtue signalling? Has it started an action plan for the 22.3% US girls in the 15-18 years age group that became mothers in 2017? Anything for the 22 thousand girls that died due to drug overdose alone in 2016 in the US? The article starts with discussing a rape case, so let us come to that, does he realise that the USA has one of the worst statistics on rape and sexual violence in the world? 1 in every 6 women in the country has faced either rape or attempted rape. Worse, 99% of the perpetrators have walked free. This is not to downplay the crime, it is only to show that India, which has significantly lower rates than the US, does not need virtue signalling from NYT. We have problems and we are dealing with them.

The article goes on to discuss the crimes against women that is plaguing the world. It states that 125 million women have faced genital mutilation in Asia and Africa. Well, the author should have done basic research on how many ‘Hindu Extremists’ have been involved with that. In an article that feels no shame in falsely blaming Hindus for protecting rapists, does not even bother to mention that Genital Mutilation is a problem Islamists are thrusting upon the world. Female Genital Mutilation happens in India, 75% of Bohra Muslim women go through it. Sadly, we don’t see any Bollywood celebrities holding placards to ban it or any NYT article calling out the Muslim Housewives who perform it. The article states mass rapes at Rohingya camps but conveniently forgets the mass molestations by Muslim immigrants in Germany or the decades-long mass child abuse that Pakistani Muslim grooming gangs have carried out in the UK. The article positions MeToo as a potential global rights movement but the sad reality is it will become a real movement only when it starts being honest. Calling out a community by name for demanding a genuine probe but keeping silent on naming the perpetrators that are the biggest offenders of women’s rights worldwide would only expose its misplaced priorities.

When it comes to India, it isn’t the crimes against humanity and greater issues of the real world NYT is usually after. When one looks at their past reports on India, a distinguished pattern emerges. Issues, data, facts notwithstanding, NYT only loves to malign India. A tax department raid on the promoters of NDTV and NYT comes up with an editorial titled ‘India’s Battered Free Press’. Does it bother about the fact that the raid was for the financial transgressions the promoters allegedly committed and the operations of the News channel were not interfered with at all? Nope, it goes on to scream with eloquent words and alarmist sentences on how India’s Modi government is intimidating India’s news media, what brilliant lies!

Then in November 2017, NYT hits another level, they run an op-ed on how the Saree, India’s widely popular female attire is in fact, a ‘Tool of Hindu Nationalist Campaign’. Indians naturally were not amused. The article drew a lot of flak from all sides, be it left or right but does NYT learn? Sadly, no. Mahindra and Mahindra opens a manufacturing plant in the US and NYT starts the same old condescension, totally ignoring the fact that Mahindra has a significant presence in their country already. The self-proclaimed criticism does not stop at India’s present either, their India and particularly Hindu hatred go back a long way, they have even criticised India’s freedom struggle. The hatred for Hindus and anything associated with it is the reason they are so vocal and PM Modi and al his policies, economic growth, facts, statistics do not matter at all when India has to be maligned. From insulting the victims of Godhra massacre to enabling the bogey of Hindu terror, NYT has done it all.

Crimes against women are a staggering issue in today’s world. We do need a mass movement, a mass movement that is not afraid to address the real issues, a movement that names and shames the perpetrators of these crimes with equal courage and voice regardless of their religion, a movement that does not discriminate between women by their race and colour, a movement that does not end up becoming a mere celebrity photo op. The MeToo movement is far away from that and NYT and the dozens of Indian media outlets that thrive on Hindu shaming should realise that real-world problems are not solved by placard activism and selective outrages.

Fact check: Did Congress govt release more funds than Modi govt for urban infrastructure in Karnataka as Rahul Gandhi claims?

In an attempt to take a dig at Prime Minister Modi, Congress President Rahul Gandhi claimed that the NDA led Central Government has provided lesser funds for urban infra development as compared to the UPA led Congress government as far as the state of Karnataka is concerned.

However, Twitter user and CS Ashutosh Muglikar nailed Gandhi’s lies by providing factually correct figures.

As per data [pdf] provided by Government of India in the Lok Sabha starred question on 3rd April 2018, under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), the Government of India has approved a State Annual Action Plan for Rs. 4,952.87 crore of which committed central assistance is Rs. 2,318.79 crore. In Swachha Bharat Mission (Urban), Rs. 166.88 crore was released to Karnataka state government in past 3 years. Under the Pradhan Mantri Aawas Yojana (urban), a total of Rs. 1,771.32 crore were released in past 3 years in Karnataka as of 28th March 2018.

Under the Smart City Mission, Karnataka, with seven cities, got 836 crores from the Central Government, second highest only after Tamil Nadu which got Rs. 848 crore for 11 cities. With respect to Namma Metro construction in Bengaluru, Rs. 1,220.24 crore was released and utilized for phase one over 3 years and Rs. 1,726.72 crore was released for phase two over three years.

This takes the amount released by Central Government to Karnataka state over last 3 years itself to Rs. 8,039.95 crore, way higher than what Congress President is claiming.

In fact, Rahul Gandhi’s tweet claimed that Congress had released Rs 6570 crores as urban infrastructure funds for the state of Karnataka. As per record, the total funds released to Karnataka by the BJP led central government is 8,039.95 crores, higher than what the Congress government had provided.

Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party have developed a penchant for blatant lies and misrepresentations. Recently, we had fact-checked his assertions regarding MSP for farmers as peddled from his Twitter account. He had also lied about BJP/RSS being responsible for the vandalism of Periyar statue in Tamil Nadu. And as if his lies weren’t enough, he was caught asking the singing of the National song, Vande Mataram, be cut short during a Karnataka rally.

It would certainly seem like Rahul Gandhi is clutching at straws trying to retain Karnataka, the last bastion of the Congress party.

Enquiry contradicts Congress’ conspiracy theories, rejects sabotage of Rahul Gandhi’s flight: The Hindu

A report in The Hindu has claimed that a discreet enquiry into supposed malfunction of a flight ferrying Congress President Rahul Gandhi, has revealed that there was no foul play or criminal conspiracy, in the matter.

Famously in 26 April, it was alleged by Rahul Gandhi’s close aides and the Congress party that a chartered plane carrying their party president from New Delhi to Hubbali in Karnataka had suffered unexplained malfunctioning.

As per Rahul aide, the plane suddenly had a heavy tilt accompanied with a steep drop in altitude. He also alleged that the plane was shuddering violently, with the autopilot too not functioning.

Following this, the party proceeded to peddle conspiracy theories by alleging that the “suspicious and faulty performance of the aircraft” meant that “serious questions relating to intentional tampering” needed to be investigated.

This narrative though has suffered a dent, with The Hindu report claiming that the said discreet inquiry by intelligence agencies had found no foul play in the free fall and shuddering which Rahul’s plane is believed to have gone through.

As per the source quoted by the article, after the autopilot mechanism malfunctioned, the pilot was asked by the ATC to descend, which led to such a phenomenon. It also claimed that the DGCA was conducting a separate inquiry with regards to whether the plane’s instruments had developed a snag.

Concerning to the autopilot, it is being claimed that it was an erratic hydraulic system, which caused the issue.

Incidentally, just a day after the incident, a Times of India report too had quoted sources, who attributed the incident to the erring autopilot system. It had also negated the prospect of a mid air panic (as alleged by the Congress), as Rahul was informed about the snag only after the plane had landed, and that there was no panic among the co-passengers during the flight duration.

Madrasa teacher arrested for sexually abusing six young boys in Hyderabad

In another shocking incident, Hyderabad police on Thursday arrested a Madrasa teacher for sexually abusing six minor children. He taught Arabic at the Madrasa and has been identified by the police as According to the police as 22-year-old Mohammed Rehan Ansari

Venkateshwarlu, the Circle Inspector of Asif Nagar police station stated that all children were between the ages of six and eight years old. According to the circle Inspector, all the children were rescued and sent for counselling.

Speaking to ANI Venkateshwarlu stated –

“On May 1, a father approached the police station and filed a complaint stating his minor son was sexually abused by Maulvi (Teacher) in Madrasa. Immediately, we registered an FIR and took up the investigation,”

The officer also said that all the victims are male as this particular Madrasa is for boys and the perpetrator is originally from Bihar, who had migrated to Hyderabad to teach at this Madrasa. The accused, according to the Police, also resided in the Madrasa.

“We got to know that the teacher has sexually abused six minor children in Madrasa. In this Madrasa, male students study and the teacher is from Bihar and was staying in Madrasa and used to teach children.” – The officer explained.

All the victim children have been sent to the health clinic for a medical check-up and the Madrasa teacher has been produced before the court. The Madrasa teacher has been booked under the section 377, 506 of Indian Penal Code and 5, 6 of POSCO ACT.

This is not the first time Madrasas have been in the dock. We had recently reported how a young girl was raped in a Madrasa and the victim and her family were left traumatised when Islamists demanded that the victim be married off to her rapist. In another incident, a Maulvi was arrested for kidnapping and holding a minor girl captive in his Madrasa in Ghaziabad. 67-year-old Maulvi, Zakir Alam was also arrested for sexual assault on an 8-year-old child in a Madrasa at Narela, Delhi. In December, the UP police had raided a Madrasa in Lucknow’s Shahadatganj area, where girls were allegedly held hostage and molested by the Madarsa’s manager. A total of 51 girls were rescued by the police during the raid and the manager was also arrested.

This is yet another outrageous incident in a long line of appalling crimes that have surfaced in the recent past.
