CSDS, The Spider Web – Undermining India’s Democracy: Detailed research paper on the foreign funding nexus

This research paper undertakes an exhaustive investigation into the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), scrutinising its history, ideological orientation, funding ecosystem, and collaborations with foreign entities. The analysis contends that CSDS operates as a node in a transnational network of NGOs, think tanks, and media organisations that are ideologically opposed to India’s interests—particularly those of its majority Hindu population and the democratically elected government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This executive summary distils the paper’s major revelations, critiques the intentions and motivations at play, and exposes the coordinated efforts of CSDS and its funders to influence India’s political and social discourse, furthering foreign interference in India’s democracy and undermining India’s sovereignty at the behest of foreign powers and furthering the foreign policy agenda of other countries under the pretext of research and civil society activism.

Origin and Ideological Leanings of CSDS

CSDS was established in 1963 by Rajni Kothari, whose early academic work and later activism display a consistent bias against Hindu society, secularisation of the state, and a tendency to launder divisive, caste-based, and anti-majority narratives through academic jargon. The paper traces CSDS’s roots to foreign-sponsored entities such as the Asia Foundation—a CIA front—making it clear that its founding moment was tainted by external influence. Over decades, CSDS leadership and faculty have cultivated an intellectual project that pathologises India’s majority community, champions false minority victimhood, and provides ideological ammunition for adversarial foreign policy goals, particularly those aimed at undermining the sovereignty and unity of India.

The Foreign Funding Web: Cash, Collaboration, and Confluence of Interests

CSDS’s operational and research budgets are sustained not only by Indian government grants (primarily through the Indian Council of Social Science Research, ICSSR) but also reveal a heavy and steadily increasing reliance on foreign funding. Since 2016, CSDS has received at least ₹15.6 crore via FCRA, though actual foreign receipts are likely far higher due to incomplete disclosures. Major foreign contributors include:

Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS): The German government-funded foundation, directly affiliated with the ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has donated over ₹2.6 crore since 2016. KAS’s explicit mandate is to advance German foreign policy and Western democratic values, which often align with undermining or “reforming” target countries’ political cultures and supporting regime change operations.

International Development Research Centre (IDRC): A Canadian crown corporation, IDRC provided up to a third of CSDS’s annual budget (over 8 years) under its Think Tank Initiative. IDRC is an arm of Canadian foreign policy, and its support focused on amplifying identity-based and separatist agitations. Canada’s open patronage of Khalistani secessionists further compounds the strategic risk posed by its funding of Indian civil society and think tanks.

Siemenpuu Foundation: This Finnish NGO, bankrolled by Finland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, funds “ecological democracy” projects via CSDS and its offshoots (notably SADED). Siemenpuu’s India interventions are framed around “supporting Adivasis,” but their networks and dialogue platforms routinely provide oxygen to Naxal-aligned and anti-Hindu intellectuals and activists, often amplifying Western narratives about oppression and dispossession in India.

Berggruen Institute: Founded by a globalist billionaire, the BI’s anti-India and anti-Hindu output is disseminated through its magazine “Noema,” which repeatedly denigrates India as authoritarian, communal, and backward—often using overtly ideological and factually selective authors, including those with links to hostile Pakistan and anti-Indian Western lobbies.[1]

Ford Foundation, Henry Luce Foundation, Omidyar, Open Society Foundations: These U.S.-based entities are well-documented for funding regime change, “civil society empowerment,” and promoting identity politics internationally. Their support to CSDS directly or via collaborative projects (such as the “Indian Muslims Project”) habitually seeds, amplifies, and exports the victimhood and “rising fascism” narrative about India and its government.

Sciences Po/FNSP: France’s premier political science institution, through the FNSP, made substantial financial contributions to CSDS. Its faculty, notably Christophe Jaffrelot, has routinely produced research critical of Hindu identity politics and the Modi government, contributing to a hostile international narrative.

Collusion with Western Media, “Investigative” Networks, and Regime Change Actors

The research details how CSDS and its research/policy ecosystem—Lokniti, SADED, and affiliated academics—are intricately connected to and promoted by Western “media freedom” and “investigative journalism” networks (such as GIJN, OCCRP, Bellingcat, Reporters’ Collective, RSF, and others). The overlap is not accidental: these global networks have documented histories of receiving support from the U.S. State Department, NED (an acknowledged CIA offshoot for regime change), Soros’s Open Society, and European government agencies. Through these channels, Western intelligence and political actors shape India’s media and research discourse, selectively funding those who amplify Western policy priorities and narratives of India’s failure, oppression, or “authoritarian drift”.

This nexus generates a feedback loop: foreign-funded Indian researchers produce alarmist reports on India’s democracy, media, or communal situation; these are then cited in global “freedom indices” and media exposés, which, in turn, justify more foreign funding and “democracy assistance” to a curated set of Indian actors—many of whom have either direct or indirect links to urban Naxals, separatists, and radical activists.

Intellectual Strategy: Caste, Minority Victimhood, Anti-Hindu, and Anti-Nationalism

The CSDS’s research, publications, and “surveys” are found to advance four strategic goals consistently:

Divide Hindus: CSDS research uses Western sociological categories and caste frameworks to amplify intra-Hindu divisions—especially by alienating Dalits, Adivasis, and OBCs from their Hindu identity, and by framing political outcomes through the lens of caste oppression and “majoritarian tyranny.” The creation and perpetuation of these fault lines mirror the strategies advocated by known separatist outfits like PFI and global anti-India campaigners.

Promote Dalit-Muslim Unity narrative: The CSDS repeatedly attempts to hyphenate Dalit and Muslim victimhood, asserting that both face oppression from Hindus or the state, and that unity between them—often at the expense of Hindu social cohesion—is necessary for “democracy”.

Demonise Hindus and the Indian State: CSDS scholars, affiliated journalists, and collaborators like Ashis Nandy and Ananya Vajpeyi, systematically paint Hindus as fascists, bigots, or perpetrators of violence, even when evidence disproves these claims (e.g., Godhra 2002, Delhi 2020). Their research is weaponised to delegitimise Indian nationalism, justify external intervention, and feed global media outrage cycles.

Undermine Indian Sovereignty: Foreign-funded CSDS research and agenda provide spin and intellectual cover for “civil society” agitation, street protests, and social media campaigns that regularly challenge the legitimacy of the Indian state, undermine national unity in Kashmir or the Northeast, and advocate for changes in laws or policies that align with foreign interests—often directly at odds with democratic majorities or the elected government.

Alliance with Hostile Foreign Stakeholders and Adversarial Groups

The paper demonstrates that CSDS’s ecosystem is not only ideologically aligned with, but is sometimes directly patronised by, entities and individuals openly hostile to India:

Association with US Deep State Proxies: Several CSDS partners and funders (NED, IDRC, Open Society, Ford Foundation) have well-documented involvement in regime change operations across Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Asia.

Links to Pro-Khalistani, Pro-Pakistani, Islamist, and Leftist Groups: IDRC’s own staff and grantees have participated in farmers’ protests and anti-CAA/Delhi riot networks. Key actors in CSDS or its partner NGOs routinely appear in agitation circles alongside urban Naxals, Khalistani backers, and anti-India lobbies.

China Factor: By hosting, funding, or affiliating with academics and journalists (and even a former Pakistani PM) known for anti-India activism, Western and Chinese funding channels (via the Berggruen Institute) further compromise any pretense of neutrality.

Recurring Patterns and Motivations

A systemic pattern emerges: foreign foundations and governments—with explicit foreign policy goals—collaborate with Indian think tanks and activists who embrace critical or adversarial stances toward India’s government, majority community, and nation-building projects. Their combined efforts amplify negative narratives globally, pressurise India’s policy space, and attempt to create internal social divisions and political instability. This coordinated campaign, the paper argues, is designed to constrain India’s sovereignty, undermine its global standing, and—when possible—influence regime changes through intellectual, media, and activist “soft power”.

Furthermore, the selective silence of these organisations on anti-Hindu violence, religious conversions, and the global targeting of Indian interests—contrasted with overt activism on any perceived or manufactured minority issue—reveals an entrenched, ideologically motivated bias.

This is the full spider web, or the mindmap of the network around CSDS. You can download the high resolution picture (6 MB size) of this mindmap by clicking here.

The Centre for the Study of Developing Societies and its web of allied NGOs, media platforms, and funders operate as part of a coordinated ideological challenge to India’s sovereignty, cultural integrity, and democratic legitimacy. Foreign funds systematically steer their research, outreach, and activism from governments and billionaire foundations invested in global regime change and social engineering. The case study of CSDS exposes how “civil society” and “academic” institutions can be transformed into instruments of narrative warfare against democratic states. For India to maintain its autonomy and national stability, the agendas, funding sources, and linkages of such organisations must be subjected to rigorous scrutiny, regulatory oversight, and public accountability.

‘I’ll slit their throat…’: Aly Goni cites Quran to defend his silence at Ganesh Puja, but dragging his non-Muslim girlfriend to mosque in abaya becomes his idea of ‘secularism’

“In my religion, worship is not allowed. The Quran also states this. I went to Ganesh Puja for the first time. I was targeted because I am a Muslim. If anyone abuses me to my face, I will slit his throat.”

These are the words of TV actor Aly Goni, who kicked up a storm recently after a video of him remaining silent at Ganesha Puja while his non-Muslim girlfriend vigorously chanting ‘Ganpati Bappa Morya’ had gone viral on social media. But his explanation following the controversy nevertheless reflects the mindset of Islamic fundamentalism and how it affects someone as privileged and entitled as Goni, who rose to fame with the MTV dating reality show Splitsvilla Season 5.

In a video that has gone viral, Aly avoids chanting “Ganpati Bappa Morya” even as people around him, including his non-Muslim girlfriend, enthusiastically chants praises to Lord Ganesha. When cornered over the mater, he claims Islam does not permit him to say such things.

The episode begins in Mumbai at the house of Ankita Lokhande and her husband Vicky, where Ganesh Puja was being celebrated. A video from this event surfaced, in which Aly’s girlfriend Jasmin Bhasin is seen chanting “Ganpati Bappa Morya.” Meanwhile, Aly Goni stands silently nearby, his facial expressions showing neither respect nor reverence.

As the video goes viral, people object to Aly’s silence. Instead of addressing it, he plays the ‘victim’ card in a podcast with FilmyGyan: “I didn’t say it because I was worried something wrong might slip out of my mouth. These ‘red-flag’ social media pages are threatening me with FIRs and death threats.”

So listen, Aly Goni—it’s fine for you to call them ‘red-flag pages,’ but is your aversion so deep that you cannot even take the name of a Hindu deity? On one hand, he calls himself secular in the podcast: “I have love for every religion in my heart.” On the other hand, he preaches Islamic doctrine — “In Islam, worship is not allowed.”

Going further into a hardline mindset, Aly even threatens his critics with death: “If anyone abuses me in front of me, I will slit his throat and cut off his legs and hand them back to him.” This is exactly the mental framework of typical Islamist extremism.

Aly Goni is fine with girlfriend wearing an abaya

Amid this controversy, an old video of Jasmin Bhasin went viral, where she is seen wearing an abaya inside Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi. Aly Goni claims that after this video, people called him a “love jihadi” and “terrorist.”

Defending himself in the podcast, Aly says: “Jasmin had gone to promote Abu Dhabi tourism, and the rule there is you cannot enter a mosque without wearing an abaya.”

The hypocrisy of ‘secular’ Aly Goni

The real question is: if his non-Muslim girlfriend Jasmin can wear an abaya to enter a mosque, then why does Aly Goni hesitate to chant Ganpati Bappa Morya? Is his secularism limited only to promoting his religion while avoiding any respect for Hindu traditions?

Here Aly’s hypocrisy is evident. For ‘secular’ Aly, mosque rules are sacred, but when it comes to Ganesh Puja, he makes faces, remains silent, and even chews gum. Bravo, Mr. Aly—so this is your secularism!

Aly Goni is a Muslim, and his girlfriend Jasmin Bhasin is Sikh. Yet when both attend Ganesh Puja, Jasmin has no hesitation in chanting praises to Lord Ganesha. But Aly remains silent. This is the duplicity of Islamic fundamentalists and Aly Goni is no exception. He won’t respect another faith but is comfortable making his girlfriend comply with mosque traditions.

When accused of love jihad, Aly even goes as far as issuing death threats to online critics. Is this not Islamic extremism? This is the same ideology that Islamist radicals follow—converting girlfriends into Islam is the same pattern seen in Love Jihad cases.

The ‘secularism’ that Aly Goni claims to stand for means respect for all religions. But his mindset clearly shows that for him it is just a facade. The truth is, he tries to insult Hindu sentiments while portraying himself as a victim. Indians have now understood that those who wear the mask of ‘secularism’ to disrespect Hindu festivals will no longer be spared.

Wikipedia distorts ‘The Bengal Files’, politically motivated editors brand the movie as ‘propaganda’: Here is how OpIndia had flagged issues regarding the ‘free encyclopedia’

‘The Bengal Files’, a movie that vividly describes the horrors of the anti-Hindu pogroms of 1946 Direct Action Day and the Noakhali riots, has become the latest target of a defamatory campaign by Wikipedia.

Within 3 days of its release, the film has been labelled ‘propaganda’ on the so-called free encyclopedia through a coordinated effort by politically motivated editors.

Given that millions of people continue to hold the false impression that Wikipedia is a reliable source of information, their perception of ‘The Bengal Files’ is likely to be distorted through the featured page of the movie on the encyclopedia.

The introductory paragraphs of the Wikipedia page on ‘The Bengal Files’

The introductory paragraphs (archive) on Wikipedia claim that ‘The Bengal Files’ is a ‘propaganda film’ and how it falsely claims that chapters of history on Direct Action Day and the Noakhali riots ‘were deliberately suppressed or ignored.’

“The movie received negative reviews from critics, alongside significant criticism over its distortion of history,” Wikipedia further claimed.

The negative portrayal of the movie continued throughout the article, particularly in the ‘Reception’ section. “The Bengal Files received predominantly negative reviews from critics,” the Wikipedia page of ‘The Bengal Files’ read.

Talk Page of the Wikipedia article gives insights into the malicious editing of ‘The Bengal Files’

OpIndia referred to the talk page (archive) of the Wikipedia article on the movie and found evidence of malicious editing by some politically motivated editors.

The deliberate distortion of ‘The Bengal Files’ on the Wikipedia is based on movie reviews (which are opinion pieces and not fact-based news articles) by what the free encyclopedia classifies as ‘reliable sources/perennial sources.’

For instance, The Hindu newspaper is considered a ‘reliable source’ by Wikipedia, although it has infamously cropped Ministry of Defence documents to pass off the Rafale Deal as a ‘scam.’

The characterisation of ‘The Bengal Files’ as a ‘propaganda film’ is based on an opinion piece/ movie review published in ‘The Hindu’ newspaper.

A Wikipedia Editor bearing the username ‘EarthDude’, who was involved in malicious editing of the article on the movie, kept on referring to the opinion piece published in ‘The Hindu’ and ‘The Indian Express‘ as the ‘gospel truth.’

When one Editor pointed out that ‘The Times of India’ (a reliable source/perennial source for Wikipedia) does not characterise ‘The Bengal Files’ as propaganda in its movie review, his argument was shot down.

Other Editors involved in malicious editing continuously removed neutral summaries to pass off their political agenda as reality. Another interesting discussion on the ‘talk page’ was the budget of the movie.

Despite a direct quote of ₹30 crores by the Director of the movie, Wikipedia Editors decided to cite speculative media reports about the budget of ‘The Bengal Files.’

Again, the notorious Editor ‘EarthDude’ insisted on referencing a report by ‘The Indian Express’ that claimed that the budget was ‘seemingly’ atleast ₹50 crores.

Despite the unreliable nature of the report, ‘EarthDude’ claimed, “Quotes do not matter. What reliable sources say do. Until and unless a reliable source states that the budget was ₹30 crores, we will state the ₹50 crores budget.”

When one Editor highlighted a report by Amar Ujala, independently claiming that the movie has a budget of ₹30 crores and that the newspaper is a ‘reliable source‘ on films and cinema, there was ‘no consensus.’

At the time of writing, the Wikipedia page of ‘The Bengal Files’ quotes the movie’s budget as ₹50 cr, which is 67% higher than the budget cited by director Vivek Agnihotri.

While analysing the ‘talk page’, OpIndia found out how some Wikipedia Editors conspired to rate the review of the movie as ‘predominantly negative.’ This was despite 4 overwhelmingly positive reviews and 7 neutral reviews.

Popular news website ‘Moneycontrol’ was dubbed ‘not reliable’ while leftist propaganda portal Scroll’s negative review of ‘The Bengal Files’ was included in the reception of the movie.

“So there is no justification for removing Moneycontrol review and having Scroll as far as I can see,” one sensible editor questioned.

Wikipedia Editors involved in malicious editing attempted to brand positive reviews by Amar Ujala and DNA India as ‘fringe sources.’ This is despite DNA India’s inclusion as a ‘reliable source’ on Wikipedia for Indian films and cinema.

Interestingly, notorious Editor ‘EarthDude’ had also objected to stating positive reviews at the start, followed by neutral and negative ones.

This is despite the convention laid down by Wikipedia in its ‘Featured articles’ and ‘Good article.’ At the time of writing, the negative reviews of ‘The Bengal Files’ feature at the top of the ‘Reception’ section.

OpIndia dossier exposes Wikipedia

In September 2024, OpIndia released its 186-page dossier on Wikipedia and made several revelations about the so-called free encyclopedia.

These include facts such as Wikipedia’s non-neutrality, tightly controlled ecosystem, ‘anonymised funding’, support for anti-India and anti-Hindu organisations, role as a publisher, and non-submission to Indian laws, among many other things.

In the context of Wikipedia’s distortion of ‘The Bengal Files’, we want to draw your specific attention to our findings about the encyclopedia’s so-called reliable sources.

Page 4 of the dossier makes it crystal clear –

Wikipedia’s “NPOV” (Neutral Point of View) guidelines does not mean that the entire spectrum of views would find equal, or even fair, representation in a Wiki article. The result of NPOV is merely that whatever details are mentioned in the “reliable source” would be mentioned.

The pool of “Reliable source” itself is tainted since the editors and administrators, who have disproportionate power in Wikipedia, ensure that “right wing” (non-Left) sources are deprecated or blacklist – which bars those sources from being cited as reference material in any of the Wikipedia articles.

During the course of our extensive research, we found that most non-Left sources were banned from use in Wikipedia.

The list of deprecated sources and blacklisted sources indicate how the articles on Wikipedia are doomed to be biased because of the sources which are considered reliable and the ones which are not. The decision to deprecate sources itself stems from the Left bias that the editors seem to suffer from,” our research stated (Page 139).

Coincidentally, Qatar-funded Islamist propaganda portal Al Jazeera and habitual fake news peddler BBC are marked ‘reliable sources’ by Wikipedia.

Indian State broadcaster Doordarshan does not feature in the list of ‘reliable sources.’ Non-left news publications like OpIndia and Swarajya are banned and blocklisted. Coincidentally, Newslaundry is marked as ‘reliable.’

In our research we had highlighted how fake news peddled by ‘The Wire‘, which led to violence in India’s Northeast, was not added to its Wikipedia page by politically motivated editors.

“Any information on fake news being spread and the consequences of it by the Left media would be mostly covered in the non-Left media, which has in itself been blacklisted by Left editors of Wikipedia. The result of this well-crafted strategy is that the information is heavily biased, skewing towards the Left,” our dossier found (Page 144).

Note: The previous version of the article wrongly identified ‘Computeracct’ as the Editor involved in the malicious editing of the Wikipedia page of ‘The Bengal Files.’ The article has been updated now with the correct information. The inconvenience caused is highly regretted.

300 Koreans detained in Hyundai factory, Japan PM resigns citing ‘humiliating’ trade deal: How the USA treats its ‘close’ allies and partners

There is an infamous quote often attributed to Henry Kissinger, ‘It may be dangerous to be America’s enemy, but to be America’s friend is fatal.’ Whether Kissinger said it or not, the sentiment rings true: America’s enmity and friendship both are detrimental for other nations. Japan and South Korea serve as stark examples of how Washington’s policies whether directed at allies or adversaries, are designed in a way as if destined to harm their sovereignty and stability.

On 7th September 2025, the South Korean government said that over 300 of its workers have been detained in a massive immigration raid at Hyundai plant in Georgia, United States. Presidential chief of staff Kang Hoon-sik said Seoul and the US officials had negotiated on the release of detained workers. Reports say that South Korea will be sending a chartered flight to bring its nationals back home.

South Korea ‘s Foreign Minister Cho Hyun on Saturday chaired an emergency meeting in Seoul, where he confirmed that out of 457 people taken into custody, over 300 were South Koreans. “We are deeply concerned and feel a heavy sense of responsibility over the arrests of our nationals,” Cho said, adding that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had activated its Overseas Citizens Protection Task Force.

He stressed that the economic activities of South Korean companies investing in the US should not be “unjustly infringed” upon during law enforcement operations. Cho also instructed officials to provide active consular support for those detained.

Detained South Korean workers in Georgia (Image via CNN)

Reports say that Park Yoon-joo, South Korea’s first vice foreign minister told US secretary of state for political affairs, Allison Hooke, that this lamentable raid came “at a critical time, when the momentum of trust and cooperation between the two leaders, forged through their first summit, must be maintained”.

As per the American authorities, these arrests were a part of a criminal probe into alleged violations of immigration and employment rules. Homeland Security officials said those detained included individuals who overstayed visas or entered through visa waiver programmes that prohibited them from working. Most of them are now being held at a detention facility in Folkston, Georgia.

Defending the crackdown, Donald Trump called the arrested individuals “illegal aliens” and said that the immigration officers were “just doing their job.”

This humiliating treatment meted out to South Korean workers in the US, comes only weeks after Washington and Seoul announced a major trade agreement in July. Last month, speaking to reporters at White House, Trump also called the trade deal with South Korea “historic”.

In July, Trump announced that the US and South Korea had reached a “full and complete trade deal,” which included a 15 per cent tariff on South Korean exports, a $350 billion investment commitment to US projects, and $100 billion in energy purchases.

However, it now seems that Trump administration’s greed was not satiated despite massive investment commitment from South Korea and just weeks after signing a ‘historic’ trade deal, Trump has resorted to acting against South Korean nationals in the US.

Perhaps, this is yet another of Donald Trump’s pressure tactics, a negotiating tool, to bend his ‘friend’ into handing more profits to his coffers or maybe it was Trump’s way of asserting his dominance, intended to play out to his MAGA support base that he would humiliate even his allies to oust alleged illegal aliens residing in the US.

It is notable here that the USA and the Republic of Korea have been close allies since the 1950s Korean War, marked by strong military and trade ties. Militarily, the U.S. stations approximately 28,500 troops in South Korea under a mutual defence treaty.

Prime Minister of Japan resigns days after being compelled into signing ignominious trade deal with the US

The Trump administration’s ‘bully the friends, humiliate the allies, squeeze maximum profits, leave nothing behind’ approach has inflicted humiliation and burdened trade deal on another key ally: Japan.

On 7th September, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba announced his decision to resign. While his resignation came in the face of domestic political upheaval and electoral losses in the Upper House elections, Ishiba’s decision to step down came  just days after Japan signed a trade deal with the United State, and pledged to invest $550 billion in the USA.

Ishiba had personally endorsed the US deal involving major Japanese investment in sectors ranging from semiconductors and energy to pharmaceutical production and infrastructure. This strategic economic commitment was made during recent US–Japan trade negotiations. In return, the USA reduced tariffs on Japanese automobiles.

Significantly, Trump has said that his government will decide the sectors where the investments will be made. This essentially means that Japan will hand over the money the USA for investing in sectors and industries of their choice. This deal sparked widespread criticism in Japan and worldwide and is being seen as nothing short of a surrender of sovereignty before the US. Trump has essentially reduced Tokyo from a respected partner to a financial colony.

Again, Japan is a key US partner since the 1951 Treaty of San Francisco. The US deploys around 54,000 troops in Japan, including key bases like Yokosuka, hosting the only forward-deployed U.S. aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan. Over 26,000 US troops are stationed in Okinawa, including key installations like the Kadena Air Base.

The ‘trade deal’ is so insulting for Japan, that even Trump administration officials could not hold back from expressing their glee over having compelled Japan into signing the insulting deal.

Being as uncouth as he could, US Commerce Secretary, Howard Lutnick, recently gleefully said that the US-Japan deal gives Donald Trump “complete discretion” over where $550 billion Japanese-funded investments will go.

Appearing on a CNBC show, Lutnick said “In order to buy down the US tariff rate, the Japanese have given $550 billion dollars to President Trump, to direct where and how these funds are invested in America. That’s half a percentage of GDP growth for a year, for the rest of his term, given to Donald Trump in order build in America for national and economic security. It is the most fun working for Donald Trump…”

The way Trump’s attack dog mocked Japan, shows how the US treats its allies and trading partners. In fact, there are no partners at all. There is US on end of a trade deal and its financial colony on the other end.

Vietnam secured tariff cuts from Trump by trading its self-respect

As ironic as it sounds, Vietnam, the small country which once defeated the US has now surrendered before Donald Trump, to secure a tariff cut from 46 percent to 20 percent. Earlier this year, Trump announced a 46 percent tariff on Vietnamese exports, however, on 2nd April, he announced reduction of tariffs to 20 percent. This news coincided with the approval of an extravagant Trump family golf course in the Southeast Asian country.

The US imposed a reduced 20 percent tariff on Vietnamese exports, while Vietnam granted the US zero-tariff access to its markets. This deal opened Vietnam’s economy to American goods, Trump’s family got approval for a golf course, but it offered no significant reciprocal benefits to Vietnam, as the US did not recognise Vietnam as a market economy or remove high-tech export restrictions. Vietnam’s massive reliance on the US market, around 30 percent of its exports, and the looming threat of huge tariffs, compelled Vietnam to give concessions to Washington.

European Union’s capitulation before Trump, boosted Trump’s confidence in weaponizing tariffs to bully countries into signing pro-US trade deals

Besides Japan and South Korea, the Trump administration has not spared even the European Union (EU). In fact, it was EU capitulation that instilled confidence in Trump that weaponisation of tariffs, threats and charged rhetoric can compel countries into bending the knee and signing trade deals meant to only to boost American economy and giving little in return.

The EU signed a trade deal with the US on 27th July 2025, reflecting its capitulation before Trump’s tariff threats. Down from 27.5 per cent, the European Union agreed to a 15% tariff on most of its exports to the US, while US exports to the EU face zero tariffs.

In addition, the EU committed to approximately $750 billion in US energy purchases and $600 billion in investments, and increased purchases of US military equipment. Trump’s aggressive negotiation tactics, including threats of levying higher tariffs and leveraging the EU’s reliance on US markets and security, pressured EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to agree to the one-sided terms. This, however, came at the cost of leaving European industries, especially automotive and pharmaceuticals, at a massive disadvantage.

Observer Research Foundation’s analysis shows that German automobile manufacturers like Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz, which export over 10% of their vehicles to the US, will witness an annual profit cut of US$1.5–2 billion.

Just as it was seen in the case of India in April this year, Trump had put a deadline for the EU as well, threatening to impose a 30% tariff on European products in the absence of a trade deal by 1st August 2025. Trump had also threatened a massive 200 per cent tariff on European pharma products in the absence of a trade deal by 1st August.

India refuses to bow down to Trump’s bullying

While the EU, Japan and South Korea endured humiliation at the hands of the Trump administration, countries like India, China and Russia have embarrassed Washington with their refusal to give in to America’s pressure tactics.

Donald Trump imposed 25% reciprocal tariffs on India earlier this year, then levied another 25 percent tariff as ‘punishment’ for India’s Russian oil purchases. Trump called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a ‘friend’ and then vilified India, called India’s economy dead even as it is growing phenomenally well, unleashed his attack dogs Peter Navarro, Scott Bessent, and Howard Lutnick to villainise India and blame New Delhi for Russia-Ukraine war.

The US-India relationship is currently in its worst phase, due to Trump’s intransigence and Modi’s refusal to massage Trump’s ego. Trump wanted PM Modi to give him credit for stopping the India-Pakistan conflict in May, using his ‘trade deal’ offer, even as the American President had no role in it. India did not give any credit to Trump, although Pakistan genuflected and went on to ‘nominate’ Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, an award, Trump has made his life’s mission ever since assuming office in January.

India, however, did not indulge in any such sycophancy. Suddenly, India’s Russian oil purchases, which the US itself encouraged and appreciated earlier, became a burning issue for Trump.

From imposing mindless tariffs, accusing India of fuelling Russian war machine and profiteering from the ongoing war even as US itself is the biggest profiteer, vilifying the Modi government for its decision to continue buying Russian oil and improving ties with China, attacking Brahmins, to whatnot, the Trump administration has tried all pressure tactics at hand to force India into opening its vast agriculture and dairy market for American companies.

However, India made it clear to the Trump administration that New Delhi will sign any trade deal with the US only when it is treated as an equal and respected partner and not as a cash cow meant only to boost American economy. The R.I.C bonhomie seen at the recently concluded Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit sent out a strong message to the US, that not all countries can be subdued into servile surrender with tariffs, threats, and unhinged rants.

Islamists spit on Ganesh idols, hurl stones from mosques: Ganesh Visarjan processions attacked in Karnataka; 21 arrested

On 7th September 2025, a Ganesh Visarjan procession was attacked by local Muslims in Karnataka’s Mandya. Muslims allegedly pelted stones on the procession, leaving 8 people seriously injured. Meanwhile, another case has come to light of two Muslim youths spitting on the idol of Lord Ganesha during the immersion in Shivamogga, Karnataka.

Reports say that when the procession being taken out for the immersion of Ganpati in Mandya reached near a mosque, Muslim pelted stones from the mosque. After this, the people involved in the procession also got agitated and the situation became tense between the two communities. There was stone pelting from both sides and 8 people were injured in this.

People going for Ganpati immersion have also alleged that the idol of Lord Ganesha was attacked. After the clash, heavy police force has been deployed on the spot and the injured have been admitted to the hospital. At the same time, the police have arrested 21 people while taking action in the case of violence and stone pelting. At the same time, Section 163 has been implemented in the entire area after the dispute.

On Monday (8th September), Hindu organisations staged a protest against the stone pelting incident. The police, however, resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the protesting Hindus, including women, and even arrested some of them.

While Hindus were attacked by Muslims for merely celebrating their festival, Karnataka Home Minister, G Parmeshwara downplayed it as “small incident”.

“An incident has happened in Maddur town, Mandya, a stone pelting incident, which is now under control. The police have already arrested a few people… Section 144 has been imposed. One or two small incidents also happened in the state. One stabbing incident has also happened; everything is under control. The police have taken all the necessary steps,” the minister told the media.

Anti-Hindu violence during Ganesh Visarjan in Mandya in 2024

Communal clashes during Ganesh immersion are not new in Mandya district. In the year 2024, there was a bloody clash between two communities during the Ganesh immersion procession in Nagamangala, in which there was heavy stone pelting and violence. During this, many shops and vehicles were set on fire, creating an atmosphere of panic in the entire area.

As the situation worsened, the police had to impose Section 144 and deploy additional forces. Over 50 people were arrested back then. Earlier also similar clashes had taken place on the occasion of Ganpati immersion, which shows the persistent presence of communal tension in the area.

Ganesh idol spat on in Shivamogga

An outrageous incident during a Ganesh immersion procession taken out by Jai Bhuvaneshwari Yuva Sangha in Sagar Nagar of Shivamogga district sparked tension in the area. Reports say that when the Hindu procession was moving towards Jannat Nagar, two Muslim youngsters allegedly spat on the idol of Lord Ganesha.

After this incident, anger and resentment spread among the people. The devotees involved in the procession have demanded strict action from the administration against those involved in the incident. Meanwhile, the police reached the spot and assured the protesters that appropriate legal steps would be taken. The police have appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony in the area.

Sonia Gandhi attacks Great Nicobar Project: How Congress has been using the pretext of ‘ecological concerns’ to stall archipelago’s development

In her editorial “The making of an ecological disaster in the Nicobar” (The Hindu, September 8, 2025), Sonia Gandhi declares the Great Nicobar Project to be a “totally misplaced ₹72,000 crore expenditure” that poses an “existential danger” to the island’s indigenous communities and “threatens one of the world’s most unique flora and fauna ecosystems.” She accuses the Modi government of “trampling on tribal rights” and making “a mockery of all legal and deliberative processes.”

The rhetoric is vintage Congress: turning development into disaster, and portraying every large-scale project as a betrayal of the Constitution. But a closer look reveals how selective, alarmist, and politically motivated these claims are.

Source: The Hindu

“Uprooting tribals” or empowering communities?

Gandhi claims the project will “permanently displace” the Nicobarese and Shompen tribes. Yet, the designated development zones have been carefully demarcated to minimise overlap with tribal settlements. The claim of total uprooting is an exaggeration. Ironically, it was during the 2004 tsunami that the Nicobarese lost their ancestral villages. Congress was in power then, and little was done to rebuild or integrate communities with modern infrastructure. Today, when the government proposes roads, power, and connectivity, Congress paints it as “existential threat.”

“Mockery of due process” or multiple layers of review?

Gandhi argues that “due process and regulatory safeguards have been evaded” and cites flaws in Social Impact Assessments. What she omits is that the project has been vetted by the National Green Tribunal, a High Powered Committee of the Environment Ministry, and the National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management. The NCSCM’s ground-truthing exercise found the project area fell under CRZ 1B, where ports are permitted, not CRZ 1A, where construction is barred. This is not mockery of process, but adherence to it.

“Afforestation as a farce” or a global compensatory plan?

Gandhi ridicules compensatory afforestation, calling it “a gross environmental and humanitarian catastrophe.” But she ignores that afforestation is a legally mandated offset under the Forest Conservation Act, with strict oversight mechanisms. To dismiss it outright is to disregard established frameworks that India and the Congress-led governments she once headed have themselves followed for decades.

The strategic silence

Most telling is what Gandhi does not mention. Nowhere in her column does she acknowledge that 25% of India’s cargo is transshipped through foreign ports, with Colombo, where China controls a terminal, handling 40% of our trade. Nowhere does she admit that Galathea Bay, with its 18–20 metre depth and location on the East-West shipping route, offers India a once-in-a-century opportunity to build a transshipment hub that can rival Singapore and end our dependence on Beijing-linked facilities. For Congress, the strategic argument simply does not exist.

Congress’ bogey of “ecological concerns”

This is part of a long pattern. Congress governments in the past blocked airstrips, radar facilities, and port expansions in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands by citing fragile ecosystems. The result? The archipelago was left strategically underutilised and economically stagnant. Sonia Gandhi’s piece is merely the latest edition of this playbook, raising the bogey of ecology to stall a transformative project.

The reality of the Great Nicobar Project

In 2024, the Narendra Modi government formally recognised Galathea Bay as a ‘major port’, a move that places the Rs 44,000-crore project under the administrative control of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, making it eligible for central funding. The facility will be developed in four phases, with Phase 1 scheduled for completion in 2028, capable of processing 4 million TEUs. By 2058, the port is projected to handle up to 16 million TEUs.

This is not just about building another port; it is about fixing a decades-long weakness in India’s maritime infrastructure. Almost all major Indian ports on the east coast have drafts of 8–12 metres, insufficient for large vessels. Global ports, by contrast, maintain depths of 12–20 metres or more, which allows them to handle ships carrying over 165,000 tonnes. India, therefore, has had to rely on foreign hubs, Colombo, Singapore, Klang, for nearly 25% of its cargo, losing an estimated Rs 1,500 crore annually in direct port revenue and Rs 3,000–4,500 crore to the economy overall.

Galathea Bay, with its natural depth of 18–20 metres and proximity to the East-West sea route, is uniquely suited to reverse this dependence. Strategically, it positions India to compete with Singapore for traffic from Bangladesh and Myanmar, where over 70% of cargo is currently routed via foreign ports.

The national security blind spot

What Sonia Gandhi carefully avoids mentioning is the national security angle. India currently depends on Colombo for over 40% of its transshipment at a port where China operates a terminal and has poured billions into related infrastructure. As Sri Lanka grows financially beholden to Beijing, even allowing Chinese surveillance ships to dock, India’s vulnerability becomes glaring. In such a context, opposing Galathea Bay is not ecological caution; it is strategic naivety.

Sonia Gandhi concludes that “the very survival of the Shompen and Nicobarese tribes is at stake” and that “India’s future generations cannot afford this large-scale destruction.” The truth is the opposite: India cannot afford to remain hostage to foreign ports and Chinese leverage. The Great Nicobar Project is not about destroying the environment; it is about ensuring national security, creating jobs, and positioning India as a maritime power.

Sonia Gandhi’s article is less an environmental plea than a political tactic. By crying “disaster” at every bold step forward, Congress reveals not vision but fear of change. The real disaster would be to let such alarmism derail India’s strategic future.

Film review: The Bengal Files shatters the delicate and sophisticated image of a ‘peaceful society’ living under umbrella of secularism

When a premier ends and people clap for a very good film. Then, why does one sit in stunned silence, rather than join the audience? This question hit me after watching The Bengal Files. Because I was not just looking at the craft of the movie alone. The movie left me pondering about the real lives impacted by the violent partition of Bharat and a cruel episode in history that has been wiped clean by our Sarkari historians and from the collective psyche by the Bengali intellectual class.

Why did our leadership decide to suppress the horrible history of Partition? Why did Leftists and Secular historians try to whitewash this chapter? Does applying band-aid to a deep wound cure the wound or lets it fester and turn into a gangrene? This is essentially the question that the young officer asks his boss. He questions him, why every crime and problem is turned into Hindu-Muslim issue?

The Bengal Files has a better screenplay than The Kashmir File. The idea of bringing in the chief protagonist of this movie from The Kashmir Files is a brilliant idea. It gives the narrative a kind of continuity, and at the same time highlights the fact that day before yesterday it was the Partition of Bharat, yesterday it was Kashmir, and today it is Bengal. Ironically, facing the same situation it faced in 1946. The horrors of exclusivist religious extremism are a continuing thread, not isolated incidents.

The story moves back and forth between the fateful months prior to August 15, 1947 and the current minority driven politics of Bengal. The character holding the past and the present together is the character of Bharati Banerjee, played hauntingly by Pallavi Joshi. It is an outstanding performance that could win her multiple awards. Well, maybe not, because the award distributing lobbies are controlled by the same secular groups that control academia, and till recently media. Only by the end you realise that Bharati, actually, symbolizes traumatized Bharatmata.

Characters that were unknown for the lay people, like Gopal Patha and brave freedom fighters of Hindu Mahasabha come to light as you never knew about them. The idealist Gandhi ji feeling lost in the violent days of Kolkata and Noakhali with confused thinking, spouting ‘benign advice’ for the women of Bengal who were being kidnapped and raped, tired Congress leaders unable to resist the carrot of early declaration even if it meant partition of a thousands of year old nation at the cost of blood riddled partitioned Bharat, trouble you. The disunited frightened response of the Hindu community during 1946 against the violence makes you ponder. If you have read the this part of history, it readies you for The Bengal Files. But watching it on screen hits you hard. You have not seen such brutality in your lifetime, your forefathers who saw it, mostly did not tell you their stories.

Many dialogues of this movie have potential to become iconic, like the dialogue of The Kashmir File – “Sarkar unki hai, par system hamara hai.” I have hardly heard more direct, and unapologetic dialogues about Hindu-Muslim relations, and about artificial façade of secular peaceful and loving relations built on ‘Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb’. We have fidgeted nervously when someone speaks about these issues. However, one must confront the reality. Those who are nervous of their vote bank politics getting exposed under the full flare of film screen will naturally want to ban this film. The secular leaders of Bengal, whose followers tell us, “Don’t watch it if you don’t like it.” But when shoe pinches their collective dead conscience, they go dumb.

It is difficult to get actors for such movies. So, with his intrepid band of well proven veteran actors who can leave behind a big impact, Vivek Agnihotri uses fresh faces. Advantage is that the new actors become the real-life characters. Monologues of the Krishna Pandit played by Darshan Kumar with conviction are some of the highlights of the film. His impotent rage of a person bearing with injustice all his life, who finally breaks the shackles of “ghulami” gives a life of its own to the film. Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Rajesh Khera, Mohan Kapur, Namashi Chakraborty, Mohan Kapur, Saswata Chatterjee et al all play their roles with finesse, painting new shades to their characters. Simratt Kaur looks ethereal as young Bharati Mukerjee and has the biggest and the toughest role, with whom you empathize. I wish it had been done with a little more depth and fire.

Background music haunts you and lifts the movie up a notch and evocative use of well-known Bangla songs heightens the emotions. Vivek Agnihotri has spared no expenses to create the period feel with huge sets. Cinematography is able to capture the period and the mood well.

This movie shatters your delicate sophisticated self-image of a peaceful society living under the umbrella of benign secularism, and ahimsa, and your assumptions. All these shattered glasses in your front make you uncomfortable. But uncomfortable one must be, if one does not want history to repeat itself as a farce, as it is happening now; or a tragedy that awaits us unless we find honest solution built on mutual trust and pragmatism. Unless we face the truth, howsoever uncomfortable, and seek reconciliation based on acceptance of real history by all concerned, we cannot attain a peaceful and happy society. World over, countries have done it, communities have done it. The movies on Jew Holocaust have not resulted in riots, they have resulted a more sensitized society. Showing Blacks and Natives in poor light did not bring peace to America, acceptance of their brutalization has sensitized their people and solutions are being found. Don’t blame Vivek Agnihotri, blame the fake narratives. He is only showing us the mirror to spark the process of catharsis.

Kolkata: TMC worker and his aide rapes woman in the guise of birthday party, both accused on the run

On Friday (5th September), a young woman was raped by a Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker and his aide in the Haridevpur area of Kolkata.

According to reports, the accused were identified as Debangshu Biswas and Chandan Malik.

The victim, who is just 20 years old, went to a house with Malik after being told about a ‘birthday party.’ She had known the accused for a few months until then.

On reaching the house, the young girl found only Debangshu Biswas present there. Malik and Biswas then took turns to rape the victim.

“The woman’s birthday was on Friday. On that occasion, the accused Chandan and Deep took the victim to the latter’s flat. There, they had a meal. She said when she wanted to return home, the accused stopped her. They allegedly locked the door and gang-raped her,” a cop informed.

On Saturday (6th September), the victim filed a complaint with the Haridevpur police. The two accused have been on the run since the incident. The police claimed to have launched a manhunt to nab them.

According to the police, the two men are absconding and a search for them has been launched. It has now come to light that the accused Debangshu Biswas is a Trinamool Congress worker.

Coincidentally, he is a revenue inspector with the land reforms department of the Mamata-led West Bengal government.

The owner of the house where the heinous crime took place informed that he had rented the ground floor of the building to TMC worker Debangshu Biswas.

He stated that the accused introduced himself as a government employee and that he would live there with his mother. The owner of the house visited the crime scene on Saturday.

OpIndia has earlier published a detailed report, highlighting connections of South Kolkata law college rape accused Monojit Mishra with influential TMC politicians like Abhishek Banerjee, Mamata Banerjee’s sister-in-law, Firhad Hakim and others.

Bareilly: Rashid repeatedly raped 11-year-old girl, the victim gave birth to a premature child who died later, accused arrested and FIR lodged

In a disturbing incident, a minor girl in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, gave birth to a premature child on Thursday (4th September) after being repeatedly raped and blackmailed by a Muslim man named Rashid. The girl was seven months pregnant when she gave birth to the child, who died half an hour later.

The 31-year-old accused, who is a married man and father of two, was arrested by the police on Saturday (6th September). A case was registered against him the day before under the provisions of rape and the POCSO Act at the Nawabganj police station. Nawabganj Station House Officer Arun Kumar Srivastava confirmed the incident and said that an FIR was registered against Rashid on Friday (5th August). A DNA sample has reportedly been taken from the baby to match the accused.

As per reports, the victim’s family was not aware of her pregnancy and came to know about it only on Thursday when she complained of persistent stomach pain. Her family took her to a government hospital, where an ultrasound examination revealed that she was 7 months pregnant. She was then taken to the District Women’s Hospital, where she delivered the premature baby the same day. Unfortunately, the baby died half an hour after the birth.

The girl was said to be in a critical condition due to her young age and blood loss. However, her condition improved later, as informed by District Women’s Hospital CMS Dr Tribhuvan Prasad.

The victim’s brother said that Rashid lured his sister into his house by offering her a fruit around 6-7 months ago, and raped her there. He added that Rashid threatened her that he would kill her family if she told anyone about the incident. Rashid also reportedly recorded a video of the victim to blackmail and have sexual relations with her multiple times.

Despite committing to supply two F404 engines every month for Tejas Mk1A, GE fails to deliver any engine in August, HAL to ask it to ramp up production

0

The production of India’s indigenous Tejas Mk-1A fighter jet has hit a setback after US-based General Electric (GE) failed to deliver any F404-IN20 engines to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in August, despite committing to supply two engines every month. The lapse has slowed the pace of assembly at HAL, which is under pressure to ramp up production to meet Indian Air Force requirements.

In July this year, Defence Secretary RK Singh had said that GE had assured a steady supply schedule beginning in August, with two engines each month till March. However, with no engines dispatched in August, the timeline has already slipped. GE has now promised to make up for the missed schedule by delivering three to five engines in October, as per reports.

HAL, meanwhile, is expected to formally request the American manufacturer to increase its production rate to ensure timely deliveries for the Tejas programme.

The disruption is significant because the F404 engine line had only recently been restarted by GE after a five-year pause. HAL received the first engine in March and the second in July, which gave confidence that deliveries were back on track. The August delay has revived concerns about whether GE can sustain the promised supply rate.

As per reports, HAL has readied two LCA Tejas Mk-1A jets with the two engines received so far, and weapon trials are going on with them.

HAL’s long-term production targets of the Tejas Mk1A depend heavily on engine availability. With plans to produce between 16 and 24 Tejas Mk-1A aircraft annually, consistent supply of engines is critical. Indian government has already placed an order for 83 Mk-1A jets and has approved an additional order for 97 more. Ensuring uninterrupted engine flow is therefore vital to meeting the Indian Air Force’s urgent squadron needs.

India has also selected the more powerful F-414 engine from GE for the Tejas Mk2 and initial versions of the fifth generation AMCA fighter jet. While a MoU was signed with GE in June 2023 for joint production of the engines in India, the deal has not progressed much so far. However, recent reports suggest that a deal for 113 engines will be signed soon, and a HAL team will visit US in this month for the same. GE has already delivered ten F414 engines to be used in the Tejas Mk2 jets being developed.
