Steve Martin has sent fans down memory lane after posting a photo with his ‘Only Murders in the Building’ co-star, Selena Gomez.
In a brand-new behind-the-scenes picture shared by him on March 21st, the 77-year-old actor looked dashing in a tuxedo as he stood with the Calm Down star, who was decked out in full wedding regalia, including an antique lace gown and matching veil.
He captioned the post, ‘Guess what just happened,’ without revealing who she will be walking down the aisle to.
The three stars of the Hulu series ‘Only Murders in the Building’ are currently shooting for the upcoming third season.
Many fans noted that Martin’s picture was seemingly a homage to his 1991 movie ‘Father of the Bride.’ He played the titular character in the 1991 original and its 1995 follow-up, ‘Father of the Bride Part II.’ He portrayed the role of George Banks alongside Diane Keaton and his Hulu series co-star and friend Martin Short.
A user posted the famous ‘hot dogs’ dialogue with a gif from the movie and another called it ‘the most relatable scene in movie history.’

A netizen called him ‘the neighbour of the bride.’ Meanwhile, another declared his love for the film.

The singer of ‘love you like a love song’ also made the most of the moment as she struck a few fun poses in the gown in her own Instagram post. She raised a can of Coke while sitting on the floor, revealing her white combat boots.
‘Only Murders in the Building,’ starring the funny trio as true-crime enthusiast neighbours who become entangled in a murder investigation, debuted on Hulu back August 2021. Its second season premiered in June 2022.
On Tuesday, the spokesperson of the State Department, John Kirby, emphasized that the protection and promotion of “LGBTQ+ rights” is an essential element of US foreign policy.
“President Biden has been nothing but consistent about his belief — foundational belief — in human rights,” Kirby responded to the question Tuesday. “And LGBTQ+ rights are human rights, and we’re never going to shy away, be bashful about speaking up for those rights and for individuals to live as they deem fit — as they want to live. And that’s something that’s a core part of our foreign policy and it will remain so.”
During a White House press briefing, Kirby made these comments in response to a question regarding the State Department’s concerns that Russia might be trying to leverage Africa’s “anti-LGBTQ movement” to create a division between the United States and the continent.
Since President Joe Biden assumed office in January 2021, various federal agencies have started exhibiting LGBTQ Pride flags outside their offices, which marks a departure from the Trump administration’s ban on unofficial flags on federal premises and also underscores the regime’s bent toward woke politics.
While most countries have self-interest and adherence to the “rules-based order” as a fulcrum of their foreign policy, the United States’s admittance that woke gender politics play a crucial role in shaping their strategies for dealing with other countries highlights yet another attempt by the US to impose indigenously grown movement to countries that do not historically or culturally relate to it.
In all likelihood, when Kirby insisted that “LGBTQ+ rights” are central to the United States foreign policy, the reference was not just limited to Islamic regimes where exhibiting woke and queer tendencies could have people thrown off building tops; and conservative nations, including Russia, where proponents of LGBTQ rights could disappear for defying state diktats.
But more likely, it is an attempt by the United States to mainstream and normalise the woke gender politics that is taking root within the country, informing its domestic policies and public perception.
Increased focus on teaching pupils in US schools about gender identity
For instance, schools in the United States are increasingly taking to teaching pupils that gender is fluid, with gender identity being one of the essential subjects alongside puberty, consent, sexual orientation and other subjects. Children are subjected to complex concepts such as gender orientation and gender transition, actively encouraging them to identify their “internal gender” and defy conventional norms to come out as trans.
The United States is also vigorously pursuing policies that grant puberty blockers to kids, which stifles their natural growth and aids their gender transition. Puberty blockers are medicines that block the natural development of puberty among children. Certain western countries have permitted children to receive puberty blockers without their parent’s consent.
Besides, several stories of transgender couples marrying and delivering children have also come to the fore in recent times. In 2021, a video of a transgender couple from Washington DC with their baby sparked outrage on the internet.
The normalisation of marriages of trans couples and unnatural deliveries of babies
The couple involved a biological female, Ahanu, who claimed to be the father of the child and a biological male, Petrona, who claimed to be the mother. The video captured Petrona attempting to breastfeed the baby but failing at it because he cannot lactate. The couple used supplements to complement the nutrient requirements of the baby.
In another case, a trans male got pregnant in a one-night stand before transition. In January 2023, a 36-year-old non-binary and queer individual from Seattle, who identifies as a trans dad, documented their experience of giving birth using the reproductive organs they were born with, following a one-night stand during their medical transition.
Danny Wakefield, who was assigned female at birth, came out as transmasculine at 25 years old, underwent testosterone treatment for nine years and had a double mastectomy in Florida during the transition.
Such stories have become all but routine in the United States, where a fierce attempt is underway to not just institutionalise the woke concept of gender identity but also internationalise it by imposing it on other nations by making it the central part of the US foreign policy.
On Tuesday, March 14, clashes broke out at a rally of Hindu organizations, and stone-pelting also transpired in the Karnataka district of Haveri. Muslims in the area have complained that their mosques and homes had been attacked. The police promptly intervened to control the situation. More than 20 people associated with the Hindu organization were arrested. It is notable that Haveri is the home district of Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai.
Biased reporting by the leftist media
As is customary for the leftist media, they reported on this incident in a biased fashion, portraying Hindus as attackers. In its report, the Left-wing propaganda website The Wire featured an image of saffron flags and referred to the accused Hindu side as “Badmash” (rogues).

Mohammad Tanveer, who claims to be a journalist, labeled the perpetrators of the violence a ‘Hindu mob’.

OpIndia contacted the accused party in this case. They stated that the conflict on March 14 was brought about by protracted harassment and unilateral action. Karnataka-based Hindu organizations also referred to media coverage of the news as one-sided reporting. We are not revealing the names for security reasons.
Hindu organizations denied entry into Muslim-dominated areas
OpIndia talked to a few attendees of the March 14 procession who were affiliated with Hindu organizations. One of the attendees claimed that the main objective of the Muslims behind the conflict was to prevent the procession of the Hindu organizations from entering their area of influence. We were told that the place where the violence occurred is under the jurisdiction of the Rattihalli police station. There, it is estimated that 40% of the population is Muslim. In Rattihalli there is a place called Tipunagar which is named after Islamist tyrant Tipu Sultan.
‘Earlier they halted religious yatras, now they oppose Hindu freedom fighters too’
Speaking to OpIndia, a participant in the procession said they were not taking out any religious procession. The procession taken out on the 14th of March 2023 was of Sangolli Rayanna, the notable revolutionary of Karnataka, who fought the war of independence against the British.
According to a participant in the procession, there was a plan to erect a statue of revolutionary Rayanna on March 9 at an intersection inside Rattihalli. However, the statue could not be installed since the Muslim group obstructed the procession from reaching Kotioni on that day.
‘Rayanna a Hindu revolutionary, Muslims hail Tipu Sultan only‘
A person who took part in the rally said, “Muslims told us that this revolutionary Rayanna is a Hindu, therefore we will protest.” We were also told that the Muslim side was screaming “Tipu-Tipu” in front of Rayanna’s statue. On March 9, 2023, the Muslim side allegedly carried stones and iron rods to block the Hindu side as they marched through the Koti Oni region. However, the police intervened and the standoff did not escalate. It has been alleged that women were also standing behind those who stopped the procession.
We also received a video via which we learned that Muslim residents of the area where the procession for revolutionary Rayanna was prevented, celebrate their religious events on the streets with much fanfare and without any hindrances. A crowd can be seen along the entire road in the footage, and various announcements are being made by setting up multiple big music systems. Provocative comments were also made in this video, in which the crowd is seen screaming and supporting it. It is said that the video was shot during an event in December of last year.

Police did not take action in a prior incident
According to a person who was part of the procession bearing the statue of the freedom fighter Rayanna, on March 9 when about 100 people from the Muslim side obstructed their path, a police complaint was filed. Yet, the police have been accused of not acting in this case. It is said that the police did not take the complaint seriously. We have the video of the incident from March 9. In this footage, a frenzied mob can be seen smashing the police barricade. In another video from March 9 itself, a large crowd is seen raising slogans before the police.
Mob breaking the police barricade on March 9, 2023
Although two Muslim youths named Qasim and Mammu halted the installation of revolutionary Rayanna’s idol on March 9 and no action was taken by the police, Hindu organizations once more brought the same statue of Rayanna five days later on March 14, 2023. It is said that the police granted permission for this rally on March 9. A participant in the march alleges that although there was a large police presence during the March 14 procession, Muslims were shouting “Aao-Aao” and inciting from a distance with their hand gestures.
OpIndia was informed that the incident infuriated the procession’s participants and violence ensued. However, the police force deployed on the site soon brought the situation under control. Local people said that the name of the persons leading the Muslim side is Qasim Qazi and Mammu Qazi, who seem to be brothers. Qasim is a welder by profession.

31 members of Hindu organisations arrested so far
Local Haveri district residents and members of the Hindu group informed us that 31 members of the Hindu organization had been arrested by the police so far. A few of these 31 youths have got bail. Hindu organization members claimed that the police action in the incident of violence was one-sided and that no Muslims were arrested in the March 9 and 14 episodes.
RSS members were assaulted in December 2022
People from the local Hindu groups said that three Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS) volunteers were assaulted in December 2022 at the location where the revolutionary Sangolli Rayanna’s procession was stopped. It is alleged that prior to conducting the “Path Sanchalan,” these RSS members went to inspect the local route map. One victim of the assault, according to the information we have, has still not fully recovered.
Locals allege that even in this incident, the police did nothing to effectively stop the attackers. A video of the incident was sent to us. It is seen in the video that a mob was brutally thrashing the RSS workers in front of the police.
RSS worker assaulted in December 2022
‘Religious processions of Hindus have been stopped earlier as well’, locals say
Hindu programmes have been interrupted numerous times before the incidents like the attack on RSS members in December 2022, and the disruption of a procession on March 9, 2023, a local Haveri resident informed OpIndia. We were told that during the immersion of Ganpati, worshippers had been pelted with stones on numerous occasions in the past, which caused communal tension in the area. A victim revealed to us that following these violent episodes, even the police would vent their anger on the members of the Hindu organisations.
The Jamia Masjid of Rattihalli is the mosque that has been regularly cited in various media reports. A participant in the procession told OpIndia that numerous Muslim community members frequently congregate near Jamia Mosque and molest girls who are passing by. They also assert that a Hindu temple once stood where the Jamia Masjid now stands.
It was also demanded that this accusation be investigated. During a conversation with OpIndia, some locals claimed that Haveri is severely affected by ‘Land Jihad’ and ‘Love Jihad’. We were also told that the Muslim population in the area has suddenly seen a spike in the last few years.
‘Congress leaders want to frame us’
The procession’s participants told OpIndia that Siddaramaiah, the former chief minister of Karnataka and prominent leader of the Congress party, was there on the day of the incident just a few kilometres away from Haveri. They alleged that Siddaramaiah and other Congress leaders were behind the unilateral action by the police against Hindus in March 14 violence in Haveri. We were informed that under this pressure, the names of those who were not even present during the incident were also inserted in the FIR.
Moreover, OpIndia has received a video of a woman who claimed that her son is innocent and has been falsely implicated.
‘How long will the Hindus be compelled to tolerate atrocities?’, questions VHP
Some Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) office bearers in Karnataka told OpIndia that the Muslims’ objection to letting the procession in honour of the revolutionary pass was what sparked the dispute. In an interview with OpIndia, Vinod Bansal, the national spokesperson for the VHP, described the clash in Haveri as the outcome of the long-standing persecution of Hindus by extremist forces.
Police taking legal action
According to the Superintendent of Police in the Haveri area, some 100 rally participants engaged in vandalism and stone-throwing. The police claim that after identifying the culprits, action is being taken against them.

On March 21, Hyderabad Police detained journalist and QNews founder Chintapandu Naveen alias Teenmaar Mallanna and his staff from the Q News office. Some of his followers were also picked up by the police. As per reports, a team of police personnel reached the Q News office located in Peerzadiguda and picked up Mallanna and his staff members. Some of the police officials guarded the entrance to block the entry of his supporters.
After the arrest, BJP State President Bandi Sankay visited his address and extended support to his family. He condemned Mallanna and activist Vithal’s arrest and spoke to the officials to take stock of the situation. Bandi accused the BRS government of silencing the voices of those who questioned the state government and demanded the immediate release of Vithal and Mallanna.
In a tweet, he wrote, “Democracy is under threat in Telangana. Let’s Save Democracy! KCR is digging his own grave by stifling the voices which are questioning his tyranny. Earnest request to media organisations not to budge into the pressure of BRS govt. Visited Tenmaar Mallanna garu & Telangana Vittal garu’s residences & spoke to their family members following their undemocratic arrest by Telangana police. Assured to stand by the families. Are these police or BRS goons? CM is resorting to these tactics after his son’s role came out in paper leakage issue and daughter’s role in Liquor Scam. BJP Telangana demands for immediate release of both of them unconditionally.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday said that the Indian government will make attempts to build a corridor to Sharda Peeth in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, like the Kartarpur corridor, so that devotees can participate in the Shardha Yatra. Amit Shah made the comments while virtually inaugurating the Mata Sharda Devi Temple, located along LoC in the Kupwara district in north Kashmir.
The doors of the Mata Sharda Devi temple located in Teetwal village of the Kupwara district of North Kashmir have been opened for devotees from today which is also the first day of Chaitra Navratri. The temple is just 500 meters away from Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK). It has been built by Sri Sringeri Math and Seva Sharda Samiti Kashmir.
The holy place was inaugurated virtually by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) National President and member of parliament for Bengaluru South, Tejaswi Surya also attended the occasion.

Addressing the event, the home minister said, “Ravinder Pandita (head of Save Sharda committee) has asked for a Kartarpur-style corridor for Shardha yatra and that the government of India will surely make attempts in this direction, there is no doubt in that.”
Sharada Peeth is a ruined Hindu temple located in the Neelum Valley of PoK, built several centuries ago. Sharda Peeth is one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peeths. It is near the Line of Control (LoC) where Neelum (Kishanganga) rivers meet Madhumati and Sargun. It was constructed in the first century during the Kushan Empire. The temple was constructed by King Lalitaditya.
A Kartarpur-style corridor for Sharda Peeth has long been demanded by Kashmiri Pandits for a long time. Residents of the village have contributed some of their lands to the committee for the temple’s construction. A mosque and a gurudwara are also being built around 136 miles from the historic site.
The Kartapur Corridor was opened in November 2019, which allows Sikh devotees in India to visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib near Lahore in Pakistan without requiring a visa. The 4.7 km long corridor connects the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan with Gurudwara Dera Baba Nanak in the Gurdaspur district in Indian Punjab.
The Mata Sharda Devi Temple has been built by Kashmir’s Save Sharda Samiti and Sringeri Math to revive the pilgrimage to Sharda Peeth, which stopped after 1948 as the main temple fell under the PoK. The temple has been built on a place which used to be the location of a camp for the Sharda Peeth pilgrimage.
During his address, Amit Shah further said, “Today I am not there but whenever I come to Jammu, my journey will start after offering prayers at this temple.” He referred to it as the beginning of a new era and also congratulated everyone, including Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who contributed to this important milestone.
He said that the installation of the idol is the first step in the process of discovering the Sharda civilization. “It is believed to mark the start of the enlightenment’s foundation, tying sentience to the boundless consciousness of the cosmos. People would travel great distances to visit this location to visit the mother and connect with their culture.”
Amit Shah remarked that the abrogation of Article 370 is taking the Union Territory back to its old traditions, culture, and the ‘Ganga-Jamuna Tehzeeb.’
He further mentioned that Sharda Peeth was formerly regarded as the knowledge centre of the Indian subcontinent. “People from both India and other countries used to travel here for learning and spirituality. It was here that Adi Shankaracharya acquired enlightenment.” The Sharda script bears Goddess Sharda’s name.
He concluded by saying that it is our responsibility to keep Jammu and Kashmir peaceful and assured that the long-standing customs of the valley will be reinstated.
Adani Airports Chief Executive Officer Arun Bansal on Wednesday said the company’s ambition is to be the leading airport operator not only in India but in the world.
Addressing the media on the sidelines of the CAPA India Aviation Summit event in Delhi on Wednesday, Bansal said, “Our ambition is we want to be the leading airport operators not only in India but in the world.” Bansal said, “We will selectively be looking for financial sense right now. We are focusing on India. Our ambition is looking at opportunities where we can contribute and makes financial sense.”
Adani has seven airports in the country and the company has plans to develop more airports in the country as well as in other parts of the world.
CEO Arun Bansal lauded the growth of the Indian economy and aviation development.
“We have been discussing becoming the second-largest economy in the world. Aviation will play a very significant role by talk about GDP (gross domestic product) growth of any country,” he said.
However, Adani Airport Holdings talks about the future of Indian aviation and expectations, Bansal said.
“India to have 1 billion air passengers by 2040, with passenger traffic growing at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 8.5 per cent over the next 20 years,” Bansal said, adding, “With a handsome growth in air passenger traffic this year to pre-pandemic levels, operationalising of new airports with stimulus from the UDAN scheme, and over 30 cities getting dual airports over the course of time, air passenger traffic will touch the 1-billion mark by 2040.”
When asked whether Adani is looking to acquire more airports in the country through bids, CEO Bansal clarified, “Once the tender documents come out, we will study and we will make a strategy. Our strategy is simple to create a scale… if bid condition is right for us, we will bid.”
“We don’t make categories about the strength and size of airports because…”Bansal said, adding, “India has a very ambitious plan with UDAN scheme. For the regional aircraft carriers, we will look at the merit of the airport and merit of the potential growth,” he added.
All seven Adani airports saw an increase of 92 per cent in domestic and 133 per cent in international travel as compared with the figures from last year. There has also been a rise in the number of domestic flights (58 per cent) and international flights (61 per cent), according to a statement from Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL).

Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has demanded the cancellation of membership of all those “fraudulent” MPs and MLAs who won reserved seats by submitting “fake caste certificates.”
Reacting over the recent Kerala High Court order, setting aside the election of CPI(M)’s A Raja from Devikulam Assembly seat in Idukki district, VHP spokesperson Vinod Bansal said here on Tuesday, “Hindu society will not tolerate such unfairness against the members of our SC brothers at any cost.”
“A Raja’s membership was cancelled from Kerala’s Devikulam constituency. It was found that he became an MLA by contesting for an SC seat using a fake caste certificate. When you scan the data, you will find that there are innumerable such MLAs in the country, who are sitting in Parliament, and hurting the pride of the SC community,” the VHP leader said at the Bharat Swagat Utsav programme here Tuesday.
He further added, “We demand that the membership of all such fraudulent Christian MPs and MLAs should be cancelled, who are sitting in the Houses using such fake caste certificates by cheating on the rights of Scheduled Castes”.
The Kerala High Court on Monday cancelled the result of the assembly election held at Devikulam constituency in Idukki district, noting that the MLA does not qualify to contest from the constituency.
The High Court set aside the election on a petition filed by Congress leader D Kumar, who was the runner-up in the 2021 Assembly polls, alleging that Raja was not qualified to contest the Devikulam seat reserved for the Scheduled Caste (SC) community.
Kumar had alleged that Raja belongs to the Christian community and does not qualify to contest for a seat reserved for the Schedule Caste (SC).
The elections on the constituency of Devikulam were held in 2021, and CPM leader A Raja won by a margin of over 7000 votes.
Devikulam happens to be a seat reserved for the candidates belonging to the Scheduled Caste community.

According to a report in the Economic Times, police and intelligence officials in Punjab have informed that nine organisations operating out of six different countries, including Pakistan, are to blame for the growth of terror and bloodshed in the province.
The three organisations linked to Pakistan are the Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF) of Ranjeet Singh Neeta, the Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) of Wadhawa Singh Babbar, and the Khalistan Commando Force of Paramjit Singh Panjwar (KCF).
Hardeep Singer Nijjar of the Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF) is based in Surrey, South East London, while Gurjeet Singh Cheema of Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) is based in Canada and Gurmeet Singh aka Bagga and Bhupinder Singh Bhind of KZF are based in Germany.
On the basis of an assessment made by the law enforcement agencies, another key ally, namely Gursharanvir Singh, is based in the UK, Gurjinder Singh in Italy and Purshottam Singh is stationed in France.
Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the leader of one of the most infamous organisations called Sikhs For Justice (SFJ), hails from the US and masquerades as a political activist.
The most significant role is played by the Indo-Canadian narcotics syndicate, known as ‘Brothers Keepers’ gang, which is comprised of the Grewal and Dhaliwal clans. SFJ chief Pannu is being funded by them, as per a dossier created by government agencies, and they are actively working together to ship Colombian cocaine to Mexico cartels.
A senior Punjab official in charge of counter-insurgency operations informed, “The attempts to revive Khalistan sentiments in Punjab are being clandestinely aided by these groups, as was evident from a series of incidents of vandalism at the Indian High Commission.”
The Sikh population in Canada, which is largely concentrated in the provinces of Ontario and British Columbia, is observing a steady rise in the number of criminal gangs with Punjabi roots operating out of Toronto and Vancouver.
“The number of gangsters who migrated from Punjab to Canada for murder, attempt to murder and UAPA cases are rising with the likes of Lakhbir Singh Landa, Goldy Brar, Arshdeep Singh aka, Arsh Dalla among others,” stated another official.
Officials also mentioned that Khalistan has caused division among the community in the gurdwara. “Among the diaspora, the Khalistan issue has been a divisive issue in gurdwaras. The gurdwaras with Khalistani leadership funnel funds into activities supporting the movement.”
Donations are also being channelled through civil society organisations in India to strengthen and support such organisations.
The development came amidst intense drama surrounding Sikh Khalistan leader and chief of ‘Waris Punjab De’ organisation, Amritpal Singh. He has been designated a fugitive by law enforcements, and they are searching for him.
Many of his close associates, including his uncle and driver, have already been taken into custody by the authorities. Amritpal and his aides are also on the radar of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) over charges of possessing illegal arms after the recovery of illegal weapons from them.
A special POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012) court in Nadiad has sentenced one Mustafa Miyana who raped his -year-old stepdaughter to death. The case is from the Matar taluka of the Kheda district in Gujarat.
According to reports, a minor girl (aged 11 years and 10 months) became pregnant after she was raped by her stepfather. The incident took place in Mahalaj village of Matar taluka of Kheda district. The accused stepfather Mustafa Miyana was arrested after registering a complaint in this case.
The accused was produced before a special POSCO court in Nadiad by the Matar police and sentenced to death by the court. The court has also ordered that the accused will have to pay Rs 2 lakh to the victim.
The accused raped his 11-year-old stepdaughter for six months
28-year-old Mustufa Hanibhai alias Babubhai Miyana, a resident of Mahelaj village in Matar taluka and originally from Godhra, was married to a widowed woman. The widow, who was married to Mustafa, had three daughters from her previous husband. One of the daughters got married in Ahmedabad. The other two daughters lived with their mother and stepfather.
After some time, the family started looking after a farmhouse in Ahmedabad. When there was no one in the farmhouse, Mustafa used to threaten and rape his stepdaughter aged 11 years and 10 months.
The accused stepfather Mustufa Miyana raped the 11-year-old minor girl for six consecutive months. During this time he also threatened the minor that if she informed anyone about this, he would kill her and her mother. So the frightened minor did not inform anyone about this.
The crime was exposed when the minor was taken to the hospital
After some time, the minor’s health started deteriorating. Her mother took her to the hospital and shocking things were revealed in the girl’s medical tests. The minor was 3 months pregnant. Her mother inquired her strictly about this and the minor told all the facts.

The protest of private doctors against the Rajasthan government’s ‘Right to Health Bill’ continued even on Tuesday in Jaipur as the state failed to comment on the matter. The Police used water cannons to disperse the private doctors as they led the protest towards the state assembly.
Earlier in the day, the Police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the crowd. The doctors said that the cops tore their clothing to pieces and mistreated the female doctors. More than 2,400 owners of private hospitals across the state began the protest on the streets on Monday.
#WATCH | Jaipur: Doctors protest against Rajasthan govt over the proposed ‘Right to Health Bill’ and Police use water cannons to disperse off protesters pic.twitter.com/Rpt0FOPT2V
At first, doctors, health professionals, and hospital administrators met at the Jaipur Medical Association auditorium at SMS Hospital to voice their objections to the Draft Bill. At about midday, the physicians departed the SMS Hospital and arrived at Statue Circle in front of Central Park on March 20.
However, at approximately 1:00 pm, the police stopped the protesters close to Statue Circle, causing a confrontation between the two sides. Reportedly, the doctors alleged that the police engaged in a physical altercation with them, but the police claimed that the protesters had become violent owing to which they had to resort to the lathi charge.
The Right to Health Bill, which seeks to guarantee citizens’ legal rights and entitlements to the finest healthcare, was one of the poll pledges made by Congress for the 2018 state elections. From the bill’s introduction in the assembly in September 2022, it has encountered opposition, among other things because it mandates free emergency care. The present budget session has not yet resulted in its passage.
The protesting doctors stated that the bill fails to define ’emergency’ while it promises free emergency treatment. They also have raised concerns over the payment or reimbursement model as per the bill. The doctors have to pay the staff, and nurses and also have to look after the maintenance of the medical tools and equipment. “If we go on treating patients free of cost, who is going to reimburse the amount?” one of the doctors was quoted as saying.
The Bill nowhere specifies if the state will reimburse private clinical establishments for providing such free services. This may violate Article 19(1)(g) of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to practice any profession or carry on any occupation, trade, or business.
Meanwhile, the Police action was criticized by the People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) which said that the police bandobast was not enough to match the crowds of doctors at the rally. The PUCL also urged the doctors to withdraw the protest claiming that the group of leaders from the joint action committee had met with the administration and government representatives and almost every disagreement was resolved.
As reported earlier, almost 300 private hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes in Kota remained closed for outdoor patients, emergency services, and new admissions as a result of the closure of private institutions, causing a 40% increase in patient volume at the government-run MBS Hospital in Kota.
