West Bengal: 5 kgs of dried seahorses worth crores seized in Siliguri, one Faiz Ahmed held

0

Around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, five kilograms of dried seahorses were found in the Naxalbari area of Siliguri during a combined operation between the Wild Life Crime Control Bureau and Ghoshpukur Forest Range.

The initial assumption was that smuggling attempts were being made from South India through Siliguri to China from the border of Nepal and Bhutan. However, it was seized by agents from the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau and the Forest Department in a joint operation in the Naxalbari region prior to being smuggled. Two big plastic bags containing seahorses were found on a man, Faiz Ahmed, who was taken into custody. According to reports, the accused lives in Islampur.

It is estimated that the retrieved dried seahorses are worth several crores of rupees.

In a similar operation at Howrah Station in March of last year, 51 kg of dry seahorses were confiscated by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Crime Intelligence Branch (CIB) personnel.

The seahorse is a tiny marine creature. They are currently suffering from overfishing and habitat loss. Seahorses have long been employed in Chinese medicine. It is well known that they are used as medicine for a variety of conditions, such as impotence and respiratory issues. Despite the fact that there isn’t any research to support that. Every year, millions of seahorses from all over the world are sold to satisfy the demand for this Chinese medication. Furthermore, it is well known that some people in various locations, like Indonesia and the Philippines, have developed a trend of eating seahorses.

However, it is completely forbidden to sell them on the international market.

Australian Hindu Association writes to Victorian Minister of Police to investigate Hinduphobic crimes by Khalistani elements

0

The Australian Hindu Association Inc has written a letter to the Minister of Police in Victoria seeking an investigation into Hinduphobic crimes committed by Khalistani-elements in the Australian state. In the letter addressed to Anthony Carbines, Minister of Police of Victoria state, the organisation expressed concerns of Australian Hindus about the organised attacks on Hindu Temples.

It was mentioned in the letter that the attacks were initiated by pro-Khalistani elements linked to a “Khalistan referendum”. It read, “Australian Hindus are deeply dissatisfied with the manner in which Victorian Police are handling this issue. There seems to be little comprehension by police of the seriousness of the issues being raised by these temple attacks.”

The organisation provided details of the attacks that happened in January. The first attack took place on January 12, 2023, at BAPS Swaminarayan Temple at Mill Park in Melbourne. It was similar to the BAPS Hindu temple attack in Canada by pro-Khalistan elements in September 2022.

The second attack occurred on January 15, 2023, at the Shri Shiva Vishnu Temple at Carrum Downs. Notably, around the time of the second attack, a pro-Khalistan rally to propagate Referendum 2020 took place in Australia.

The third and most recent attack took place on January 23, 2023, at ISKON Hindu Temple at Albert Park.

Furthermore, it was mentioned that voting is scheduled at Federation Square on January 29 by Sikhs For justice for Referendum 2020. It was added that the Government of India already bans SFJ under UAPA.

Notably, the Australian Hindu Association had provided ASIO first-hand evidence of plans by some individuals to set up SFJ cells in Australia.

The letter pointed out how pro-Khalistani elements called for killing 50,000 Hindus, how Khalistani posters are being circulated in Australia and more.

Counter protests by Hindus

The letter mentioned that many Hindus who oppose the Khalistani movement had organised protests against the rising Khalistani elements in Australia. Notably, a counter-protest is being organised at Federation Square on the same day the Referendum voting is scheduled. There are over 200,000 Hindus live in Victoria, and “if a fraction of that number attends, then there is a real risk of confrontation between the two groups,” the organisation said.

‘Provide adequate resources to investigate Hinduphobic crimes’

Amendra K Singh, President of the Australian Hindu Association, wrote that he and many other Hindus have expressed concerns and wrote to Australian police over the matter. However, they have not received even a courtesy response.

He said, “While there have been a number of statements by politicians condemning the attacks, such platitudes do nothing to alleviate the fears of Australian Hindus whose places of worship have been desecrated. The real action is required so that we can attend our places of worship without fear or being subjected to vilification.

The attacks did not occur in some remote locations; they took place in the well-populated suburbs of Melbourne. Yet, the Victorian Police, with vast resources and technology at its disposal, has not apprehended a single individual in relation to any of the attacks.”

He added, “It appears that Victorian Police have little appreciation of the history of, the psyche of and potential for large-scale violence by individuals who support the Khalistan movement.

I request that adequate resources be allocated to investigate these Hinduphobic crimes by terror-linked elements. Are you going to wait until a Hindu life is lost before taking this threat seriously?

As to the proposed referendum, I request you – in the interests of maintaining public order and protecting Australian Hindus from intimidation, harassment and vilification, to ensure that appropriate steps are taken to ensure that the ‘Khalistan referendum’ event does not take place.”

OpIndia did a report on the uprising of the Khalistani movement in Australia. It can be checked here.

SFI plans to screen controversial BBC documentary at Kolkata’s Presidency University after failed attempts at JNU and Jamia

Amid the ongoing controversy over the propaganda BBC documentary, the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) of Presidency University in Kolkata has additionally sought permission to screen the banned documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the 2002 Gujarat riots on January 27 at 4 pm.

The SFI at Presidency University claimed it had submitted an email to university officials to reserve the badminton court on campus, where the video would be screened on a large screen. The university administration has yet to react to the request.

This is after the screening of the propaganda BBC documentary titled “India: The Modi Question” was halted at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University and Jamia Millia Islamia university. The controversy heated up as the JNU administration allegedly cut power and internet connections at the student union’s office to stop the illegal screening of the banned documentary. On January 25, the leftist student body JNU Student’s Union claimed that after the power supply was cut, stones were pelted at them by ABVP as some students gathered to watch BBC’s controversial docuseries on the 2002 Gujarat riots.

The students claimed that stones were hurled at them when they were watching the documentary on their mobile phones as the screening could not be held. ABVP on the other hand has refuted the accusations. Moreover, a senior police officer stated that no such incident was reported to the police.

The JNU administration on the other hand stated that there was a major power line fault that was being fixed. “There is a major power line fault at the university. We are looking into it. The engineering department is saying it will be resolved at the earliest,” the JNU administration said. Notably, the JNU administration had refused to permit the screening and had said that disciplinary action would be taken if the documentary was screened. Earlier, a case was filed against the JNUSU for intending to show the banned documentary on the JNU campus.

The plan of SFI to screen the documentary at Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi also didn’t materialise after the university administration refused permission for the screening. Several SFI members were detained by police for the same.

Last week, India denounced the controversial BBC documentary series on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, described as a ‘propaganda piece’ designed to push a discredited narrative. “We think this is a propaganda piece designed to push a particular discredited narrative. The bias, lack of objectivity, and frankly continuing colonial mindset are blatantly visible,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said during a weekly media briefing.

Apart from JNUSU, many other student organizations at different universities attempted to show the BBC documentary. Earlier, Student Islamic Organisation (SIO) & Muslim Student Federation known as the Fraternity group at Hyderabad Central University (HCU) organized a screening of the BBC documentary inside the campus on Monday. More than 50 students from these groups attended the screening.

Also, the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), the youth wing of the ruling CPI(M) in Kerala, has announced that they will screen the controversial documentary on Tuesday evening in the state capital of Thiruvananthapuram despite stiff opposition from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

‘He is like a father figure to me’: Female TMC member after visuals of her giving foot massage to party MLA Asit Majumder goes viral

On Friday (January 20), a Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA named Asit Majumder courted controversy after he was seen receiving a foot massage from a female party worker.

The incident took place when Majumder visited the Debanandapur village in the Hooghly district of West Bengal as part of the party’s 60-day campaign ‘Didir Surakha Kavach’, ahead of the upcoming Panchayat polls.

After completing the day’s programme, he went to the house of a local TMC leader named Piyush Dhar. It was during his time at Dhar’s residence that Asit Majumder received a foot massage from a woman.

Reportedly, a member of Trinamool Congress (Chunchura) Panchayat Samiti named Ruma Roy Pal began massaging his feet while he lay comfortably on the bed. The picture, which was originally uploaded by Pal on her Facebook account, stirred political controversy.

Asit Majumder came under fire for ‘exploiting’ his position of power. While speaking about the matter, BJP leader Suresh Sahu said, “His policy of ‘give and take’ is pretty clear. If you want to get something from him, then, you have to give him something in return.”

“He treats his supporters as slaves (Dashi) and keeps them lurking around for his benefit. And in return, he appoints them either as the head of the panchayat or its member…This is a matter of shame. Hope he develops some wisdom. We can only hope for that,” he emphasised.

Ruma Roy Pal defends Asit Mazumder

Meanwhile, the foot masseur aka Ruma Roy Pal has come out in defence of the TMC legislator. She claimed that Asit Mazumder underwent surgery a few months ago but that did not stop him from walking for ‘Didir Surakha Kavach’ campaign.

“He had sprained his leg, which became hard as a brick. He loves me like his daughter and I respect him as a father figure. After my husband’s death, he made me the Pradhan of the Panchayat,” she added.

“Where is it written that I cannot serve him as my parents? He was lying down and I served him as a daughter as you can see in that picture. After the foot massage, he experienced relief. I was blessed to know that,” Pal concluded.

Shanghai Cooperation Organisation chair India invites Pakistan foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto to SCO meeting to be held in Goa

0

As the chair of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), India has invited Pakistan’s Foreign Affairs Minister Bilawal Bhutto, and the Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial to attend foreign ministers’ and chief justices’ meeting which is scheduled to take place in Goa in May.

Pakistan, however, is yet to respond to the invite sent by India through its High Commission in Islamabad. It is notable that India took over the rotating presidency of the eight-member grouping in September last year. India has sent formal invitations to all the SCO member countries including Pakistan and China.

“In keeping with its ‘Neighbourhood First Policy’, India desires normal neighborly relations with Pakistan. India has consistently argued that any disputes should be resolved bilaterally, amicably, and in an atmosphere free of terror and violence. The onus is on Pakistan to create such a conducive environment. India has made it clear that it will not make compromises on matters involving national security and that it will act firmly and decisively to thwart any attempts to compromise its security and territorial integrity,” The Indian Express quoted a top official as saying.

This comes days after the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif in an interview with Dubai-based Al Arabiya TV said that Pakistan has learned its lesson after three wars with India and stressed that now it wants peace with its neighbor.

“We have had three wars with India, and they have only brought more misery, poverty, and unemployment to the people. We have learned our lesson, and we want to live in peace with India, provided we are able to resolve our genuine problems,” Sharif said in the interview.

Earlier in December 2022, Bilawal Bhutto made derogatory remarks about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In New York, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari called PM Narendra Modi the‘ butcher of Gujarat’. He also accused India of carrying out terror attacks in Pakistan and denied that Pakistan is sponsoring terrorism. He made the comments responding to remarks of Indian foreign minister S Jaishankar at the UNSC, where he had pointed out that Osama Bin Laden was found hiding in Pakistan.

Notably, Pakistan has decided not to participate in the SCO Film Festival, which will be held in Mumbai from January 27 to 30. The third such film festival hosted by the group has received submissions from all nations with the exception of Pakistan.

It is pertinent to note that this is the first time in over a decade that India has extended such an invitation. In 2011, Hina Rabbani Khar was the last Pakistani foreign minister to visit India.

Ever since the Narendra Modi government abrogated Article 370 in Jammu Kashmir, the already strained Indo-Pak bilateral ties have been affected. The Modi government also took a strict stand against Pakistan’s state-sponsored cross-border terrorism.

The SCO currently has eight member countries (China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan), four observer states interested in acceding to full membership (Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran, and Mongolia), and six “Dialogue Partners” (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Turkey).

Notably, the Shanghai Five, which was formed in 1996, became the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in 2001 with the addition of Uzbekistan. The SCO expanded to become one of the largest multilateral organizations in the world, representing more than 30% of the world’s GDP and 40% of the world’s population, with the addition of India and Pakistan in 2017 and the decision to admit Tehran as a full member in 2021.

‘Jairam Ramesh sabotaged projects in NE, advocated for Chinese expertise for projects in Arunachal’: Mahesh Jethmalani

BJP MP and advocate Mahesh Jethmalani on Wednesday continued laying into senior Congress leader Jairam over his alleged links to China and sabotaging vital projects when he served as the Environment Minister in the UPA government.

“As EM #JairamRamesh sabotaged India’s vital Hydel projects. He halted the Narmada dam construction in Gujarat&MP. Significantly, in a note to the then PM he put a question mark on all NE hydel projects(see link)All this while China was making giant strides in HEP,” Jethmalani tweeted along with sharing a Financial Express article published in 2010.

The article titled ‘In a note to PM, Jairam takes on govt, puts a question mark on N-E projects’ talked about how the-then Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh demanded a review of all hydel projects in the North East and a moratorium on any further clearances for hydel projects in Arunachal Pradesh.

In his letter to former PM Manmohan Singh, Ramesh raised alarm over “making Arunachal Pradesh a pawn” in the race between India and China, the report stated.

The report also cited Ramesh as warning the Centre about the possible resentment among the Assamese society against mainland India for “exploiting North East hydel resources for its benefits”.

As per the report, Ramesh had also conveyed his concerns to the PM over mega projects in Bhutan like the Kurichu dam and Mangdechhu hydel project, which he claimed would bound to have diplomatic ramifications as those projects were being built with Indian help, and power produced from them would be purchased by India.

Ramesh chiefly cited concerns over projects mostly being built on Brahmaputra, which even China was eyeing to harness on its side, the report shared by Mahesh Jethmalani said.

Significantly, even as Ramesh was seeking a review of all hydel projects in the North East, he advocated drawing on Chinese expertise in implementing hydel projects in Arunachal Pradesh at a time when China was laying claim on the Indian state, Jethmalani said in a subsequent tweet.

The Supreme Court advocate shared a Times of India report published in 2010 when Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh spoke about the possibility of seeking Chinese expertise to build hydrological projects in Arunachal Pradesh because “it did not have the kind of experience that China had”.

“But our ability to handle vast hydel projects is much less compared to China,” Ramesh said while hinting at the possibility of seeking Chinese help in building hydel project in Arunachal Pradesh.

Mahesh Jethmalani asks Jairam Ramesh to come clean on his links to China

This is not the first time that Jethmalani had cornered Ramesh on his allegedly close links with China and his softer approach towards tackling the threat posed by Beijing.

Earlier yesterday, advocate Mahesh Jethmalani asked Congress leader Jairam Ramesh to come clean on his links to the Chinese company Huawei. Notably, Huawei has been banned by several countries, including the United States, for security reasons.

In a tweet, Jethmalani said, “Since 2005, Jairam Ramesh has been lobbying for Chinese telecom co Huawei’s activities in India (see below excerpts from his book). Huawei has been banned in several countries as a security threat. Jairam now questions GOIs China stand. It behoves him to disclose his Huawei links.”

Earlier, Jethmalani had called Ramesh a “mouthpiece of Chinese disinformation” in a tweet. On December 30, he wrote, “Jairam Ramesh’s denigration of India’s pharma industry is natural. An ardent Sinophile, he is a mouthpiece of Chinese disinformation. His rant comes against the backdrop of China’s present grim crisis & India’s success. His lies stand exposed by the Gambian& Uzbekistan govts.”

SFI’s plan to screen the controversial BBC documentary at Jamia Millia Islamia university foiled after 4 SFI members detained

0

Following the announcement by the Left-affiliated Students’ Federation of India (SFI) that it is going to screen the contentious BBC documentary about Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Jamia Millia Islamia campus, the Delhi Police reported on Wednesday detained four members of the organization. The screening of the documentary, which was scheduled to take place at 6 PM today, was also halted as the administration didn’t allow the unauthorised event.

After the Students Federation of India announced the screening on Facebook on Tuesday, officials at Jamia declared in a statement that they would not permit any unapproved meetings on campus. The SFI’s Jamia unit had said that the documentary will be screened at 6 pm at the MCRC lawn gate no 8. Following this, the institution’s management stated that the screening will not be permitted and that they are taking all necessary precautions to stop individuals and groups with a “vested interest to undermine the peaceful academic atmosphere of the university.”

The institution released a statement saying, “It has come to the notice of the administration of the university that some students belonging to a political organization have circulated a poster about the screening of a contentious documentary film on the university campus today.” The university said that in the event of any violations, organizers will face severe disciplinary punishment.

Four SFI members were detained, according to a Delhi Police spokesman, just hours before the screening that the student body had scheduled for 6 p.m. At 4 o’clock, the SFI announced a demonstration against the detention of its members. A poster advertising the documentary’s screening at the MCRC lawn gate no. 8 at 6 o’clock has been made available by the SFI’s Jamia section.

The SFI issued a statement following the detention. It said, “In an atrocious manner, Azeez, a student of Jamia Milia Islamia and SFI Jamia Unit Secretary; Nivedya, a Jamia Student and SFI South Delhi Area Vice President; Abhiram and Tejas, both Jamia students and SFI Unit members have been detained by the Delhi Police prior to the screening of the documentary.”

Security has been stepped up at Jamia Millia Islamia University in advance of the showing of the provocative BBC documentary after activists of the Students Federation of India (SFI) organized its screening.

The documentary’s social media sharing was prohibited on Saturday by the Indian government, by making use of emergency powers provided for under the country’s information technology legislation. The documentary series was referred to by the administration as “hostile propaganda.”

A similar screening that some students attempted to host yesterday night at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) encountered difficulties since the students’ union office’s internet and electricity went out. The JNU administration had threatened disciplinary punishment if the video was shown, saying that doing so may damage campus peace and unity.

A video of some youngsters making reels on the Noida metro has gone viral on social media. Netizens criticized Noida Metro authorities for allowing them to shoot on the Metro as it was inconvenient for the passengers and demanded action against those who were involved. However, it turned out that the video that went viral on social media was not some youngsters making reels but an ad shoot that was being done with the authorities’ permission.

In the viral video, a woman was seen trying the scare the passengers inside a metro coach by dressing and posing as the character ‘Manjulika’ from the 2007 Bollywood movie ‘Bhool Bhulaiya’. The woman dressed in a yellow saree is shouting like Manjulika, and while the passengers keep staring at her, a man with headphones seems to be unaware of her presence. The ‘Manjulika’ then proceeds to push him, ultimately scaring him, and forcing him to leave the seat. The woman then occupies the seat vacated by the man.

Now, it has been revealed that it was not a prank reel made by youngsters, but an ad film for boAT for its headphones. The man in the video is supposed to be wearing boAT headphones, which produce sound so powerful that the characters come to life.

Manjulika was not the only ad in the style of prank videos made by the company, its other ads included people dressed as characters from Netflix’s Squid Game and Money Heist inside metro trains. The company posted a video on Instagram showcasing some of the ads, where a ‘Manjulika’ in a green saree, and Money Heist characters are seen entering metro trains and acting their roles. Apart from headphones, the video also featured boAT speakers.

“Sound so powerful your favourite characters came to life ? Our all-new Stream Edition is what caused the recent #ViralMetroIncident,” the company wrote in the Instagram post.

The Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) also confirmed that it was a commercial ad, and it was shot on the metro with the NMRC’s permission. Managing Director of Noida Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (NMRC) Ritu Maheshwari clarified it in a press statement.

“This is to clarify that video going viral on various Social Media Platforms is a part of a commercial advertisement shooting which was held on 22.12.2022 under approved NMRC Policy for Film Shooting. Also, the video clip is morphed and edited.”

The statement continued, “NMRC has approved Film Shooting Policy where it provides its infrastructure, including Rolling Stock on a rental basis, to earn Non-Fare Box Revenue. Ad Film Shooting was carried out by M/s Creative Productions (A Delhi Based Film Production House) for “boat Air dopes” on NMRC Corridor.”
