Congress supporters attack PM Modi over his old comment on meeting between Jamsetji Tata and Swami Vivekananda: Here’s when the two met

0

A short clip from PM Modi’s address to a students’ convention in 2017 to mark the 125th anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’s Chicago address at the World’s Parliament of Religion in 1893 has gone viral on social media.

In the video, PM Modi said that Swami Vivekanda and Jamsetji Tata shared a cordial relationship and wrote letters to each other. PM Modi also said that Swami Vivekananda was among the earliest proponent of ‘Make in India’ and had urged Jamsetji Tata to set up businesses in India.

Several Congress supporters and ‘independent’ journalists who harboured pathological hatred for PM Modi shared the five-year-old video to attack the Prime Minister and allege that what he said in his speech was untrue.

Congress supporters and ‘independent journalists’ alleged that Swami Vivekananda, born in 1863, had urged Jamsetji Tata to set up businesses in India when he was just six since Jamsetji had started his first business in 1869.

Curiously, the videos were retweeted several thousand times on Twitter even though the cause of sharing a 5-year-old video remains unclear. A raft of Modi detractors retweeted the video and perpetuated the claim that a six-year-old Swami Vivekananda motivated Jamsetji Tata to start businesses and help the motherland, discounting the possibility of the duo’s meeting later in their lives.

Jamsetji Tata wrote a letter to Swami Vivekananda in 1898, seeking his support for Indian Institute of Science

However, contrary to what the propagandists would have us believe, PM Modi was referring to the letter communication that Jamsetji Tata and Swami Vivekananda routinely had, to exchange ideas and intellectual opinions. Moreover, the two had met on board the SS Empress of India in 1893 and the meeting left a lasting impression on Tata which led to the setting up of IISC.

In a letter by Jamsetji Tata to Swami Vivekananda in 1898, the business mogul wrote to the Hindu spiritual leader seeking his support for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Science, the first of its kind in India. The letter also reflected the bonhomie and admiration Jamsetji Tata and Swami Vivekananda shared, providing a rare insight into how the two stalwarts of their respective fields tried to leverage their expertise to advance India’s cause.

“I trust, you remember me as a fellow traveller on your voyage from Japan to Chicago. I very much recall at this moment your views on the growth of the ascetic spirit in India, and the duty, not of destroying, but of diverting it into useful channels. I recall these ideas in connection with my scheme of Research Institute of Science for India, of which you have doubtless heard or read. It seems to me that no better use can be made of the ascetic spirit than the establishment of monasteries or residential halls for men dominated by this spirit, where they should live with ordinary decency and devote their lives to the cultivation of sciences –natural and humanistic,” Jamsetji Tata wrote.

Seeking Vivekananda’s support for the Indian Institute of Science, Tata wrote, “I am of opinion that if such a crusade in favour of asceticism of this kind were undertaken by a competent leader, it would greatly help asceticism, science, and the good name of our common country; and I know not who would make a more fitting general of such a campaign than Vivekananda.”

He further added, “Do you think you would care to apply yourself to the mission of galvanizing into life our ancient traditions in this respect? Perhaps, you had better begin with a fiery pamphlet rousing our people in this matter. I would cheerfully defray all the expenses of publication.”

‘I thought Kunal Kamra had a mental condition’: Arnab Goswami on the incident of heckling in flight

Speaking about the heckling on a flight by self-proclaimed stand-up comic Kunal Kamra, Republic TV’s Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami remarked that he had thought Kamra had a “mental condition.”

Appearing on the ANI Podcast with Smita Prakash, Arnab stated that he was unaware of what was going on around him during the trip in which Kamra heckled him and that he assumed Kamra had some mental problem that the cabin crew would address.

Arnab said, “I had just begun watching a film and I didn’t recognise the individual you are speaking about, I thought there was a condition the individual had. I felt that it is not my job and it is the job of the security people there to do it. And I really thought he was shouting at someone else.”

“Truly, to be very honest with you, I had my headphones on and I was watching the movie at the volume level of 90. I did not realise much about this whole episode till I actually landed. I was on my way to interview Yogi,” Arnab further added.

Kunal Kamra harassed and heckled renowned journalist Arnab Goswami on a January 2020 trip from Mumbai to Lucknow. Kunal Kamra then turned to Twitter to share a clip of himself heckling Arnab Goswami. He also tweeted that he had a “monologue” with Arnab Goswami on his journalism. He closed the tweet with the words ‘F*ck Arnab,’ and stated that Arnab failed to respond and labelled him mentally insane.

Kamra had used abusive language against Arnab.

In the video, Kamra can be heard mocking Arnab and questioning how he could discuss Rohit Vemula’s caste. He further informs Arnab that he should respond to him since he supports Rahul Gandhi and is a part of the ‘Tukde Tukde Gang.’

Following this, IndiGo Airlines banned Kunal Kamra from flying for heckling Republic TV’s Arnab Goswami. On cue, Air India, SpiceJet, and GoAir all announced restrictions on Kamra. The government of India, through the Ministry of Civil Aviation, issued guidelines in September 2017 to address on-board disruptive and disorderly behaviour by passengers, which might land them on the No-Fly List.

On-flight behaviour and passenger safety are rigorously monitored on most local and international flights, and there are severe procedures in place following the 9/11 tragedy in 2001.

After ordering minor Hindu girl to return to her abductor, Pakistan court reverses order following social media outrage, sends her to safe home

On Thursday, October 20, a court in Pakistan’s Hyderabad city sent a 15-year-girl minor Hindu girl, who was abducted and forcefully converted to Islam, to a safe home. She was initially not allowed to go with her parents and instead was sent back to her abductor by the court. The court was on Thursday, however, forced to reverse its decision following a social media outrage and the judge ordered that she should be sent to a safe home and can meet her parents.

Netizens were enraged after a video of the teenage Hindu girl crying and clinging to her mother following the court’s ruling went viral on social media.

In what transpired, the 15-year-old was abducted by one Shaman Magsi and three others on 12 August in broad daylight from the Fateh Chowk area of Hyderabad in Pakistan. She was allegedly forcefully converted to Islam and married to her abductor.

Soon after, the girl’s parents rushed to a nearby police station to lodge a complaint of suspected forced conversion but reportedly the police did not register an FIR until September.

“We are poor people. No one here is helping us. I visit the police station almost every day but they are neither helping us nor saying anything about my daughter,” the mother of the kidnapped girl said.

In September, the police and human rights officials recovered the Hindu victim from Balochistan province and she was brought back to Hyderabad and kept in a shelter home as her abductor, now her so-called husband filed a case in court against her parents.

He also presented a medical and marriage certificate in court, claiming the girl was 19 years old. Her parents, however, informed the court on Thursday that she was a minor and that the police were not cooperating with them.

The Pakistan court initially accepted the marriage certificate and did not allow the minor to go back to her parents and instead sent her back to her abductor, but after social media uproar over videos of the girl crying and holding her mother inside the court surfaced, the judge ordered that she be moved to a safe home and a medical examination be conducted.

The abductor was also barred from contacting the girl or her family until the medical report was validated.

Hindus in Pakistan live in perpetual fear of persecution at the hands of the Muslim majority. News reports of Hindu women kidnapped, forcibly converted to Islam, and married off to their abductors have become par for the course across the length and breadth of Pakistan but particularly stark in the southern province of Sindh. Even courts and judiciary have failed in providing justice to the Hindus as they had, in many cases, sided with the abductors and ordered Hindu women to live with their kidnappers. And not just women, but men too have been the victim of Islamic conversions in Pakistan.

Mass conversion of Hindus in Sindh, Pakistan

In July last year, OpIndia reported that as many as 60 Hindus were converted en masse to Islam in the Sindh province of Pakistan.

Similarly, in the year 2020, as many as 171 Hindu men, women and children belonging to the highly marginalised and socio-economically backward Bhil community have forcefully been converted to Islam in the Sindh province of Pakistan.

Viral video: Pakistani Maulana seen in photo with Aamir Khan describes dream where he sucked honey oozing from Jinnah’s fingers

An Islamic cleric from Pakistan named Tariq Jamil has come under the spotlight once again after he was seen describing his dream of sucking the “honey-filled fingers” of the country’s founder Mohammed Ali Jinnah. The video, dating back to August 2020, has now gone viral on social media.

“Once Maulana Shabbir Ahmad Usmani (Islamist who supported the Pakistan movement) was asked about his decision to lead the prayers after Jinnah’s death. He narrated that he had a dream few days prior to the event, where Prophet Muhammad was describing Jinnah as Allah’s soldier,” the cleric remarked.

He further added, “Even I had a similar dream about Mohammed Ali Jinnah. On seeing me, he put his two fingers forward and asked me to suck on it. When I did, I could feel the flow of thick, sweet honey into my mouth.”

“Even after my dream ended and I woke up to the reality, I could still feel the taste of honey from Jinnah’s fingers,” Tariq Jamil was seen saying. The Islamic cleric was earlier seen describing Hoors (mythical virgins) to his Jannat-loving audience.

“She will have 100 unique sets of dresses, and layers of makeup over her face. The Hoors will have a unique scent and will be clad in transparent dresses, with no underwear,” he had infamously said in a viral video. He then went on to describe that the virgin will be so beautiful that the Muslim (man) who arrives at Jannat cannot help but look at her non-stop, forgetting the passage of time, and will keep looking at her beautiful body, visible under her transparent dress, for years and years.

Tariq Jamil later received flak for sexually objectifying women in the name of Islam.

In 2020, he courted controversy for blaming women for the Wuhan Coronavirus. During a prayer meeting, Maulana Tariq Jamil spoke about the plagues in ancient times and claimed that these were natural disasters sent by God.

He claimed that begging for repentance from Allah was the only way for humans to rid themselves of the calamity. He also offered sermons on the kind of clothes women should wear.

Expressing dismay, he said, “Hamare betiyon ko kaun nacha raha hai? (Who is making our daughters dance?)” He said that when Muslim women and the youth indulge in shameless and immodest behaviour, then Allah inflicts pain and agony on humans.

After contracting Covid-19, he acquired the sensitivity to spread awareness about preventing the deadly disease. He said that Allah has sent the virus as a test but told everyone to wear masks and practice social distancing.

Tariq Jamil and his meeting with Aamir Khan

Ahead of the release of ‘Lal Singh Chaddha’, a picture of Aamir Khan and Maulana Tariq Jamil went viral on social media. The said meeting took place in October 2012 in Saudi Arabia during the annual Islamic pilgrimage of Hajj.

It must be mentioned that Tariq Jamil is a member of Tablighi Jamaat. It is important to note that Tablighi Jamaat is banned in Saudi Arabia after the custodian of the two holy Mosques called Tablighi Jamaat “one of the gates of terrorism”.

Tablighi Jamaat gained widespread prominence in India when the gathering of its members in Delhi became one of the earliest hotspots of Coronavirus in the country. The Tablighi Jamaat event was not only attended by Indian Islamic clerics but also by foreign nationals.

Section 144 imposed in Mumbai from November 1 to 15 after receiving intel of a potential threat to law and order

0

On Friday, Mumbai Police issued the order to impose section 144 across the city for 15 days, which go into effect from November 1 to 15. The decision was taken in the wake of a potential threat to the law and order situation in the city.

Section 144 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) prohibits groups of more than five people from gathering in public places. The order to impose Section 144 is issued under sections 10 (2), 37 (3) of the Maharashtra Police Act, 1951.

The commissioner stated in the order that they had received information indicating a possible threat to the city’s law and order situation, which could result in damage to public property and the loss of human life.

Apart from restricting public gatherings of more than five people, the order also states that processions and the lighting of firecrackers will be prohibited in the city. The use of loudspeakers and music bands during a procession will also be banned.

However, the Mumbai Police have exempted the processions on occasion of wedding ceremonies and funerals, in educational institutions, office meetings, general society meetings, cinema halls, and for trade activities from the restrictions imposed.

According to the order, whoever is found violating these orders shall be punished.

In another order issued under Sections 2 (6), 10 (2), and 37 (1) of the Maharashtra Police Act, 1951, the commissioner prohibited the use or transportation of any weapon from November 3 at 0.01 hours until December 2 at 24.00 hours.

According to the order, an individual may not store or transport any weaponry, ammunition, or explosives without prior police clearance.

The order also bars people from collecting, transporting, or possessing stones or other items capable of projecting missiles, among other things. It also outlaws the display of effigies and corpses and states that no one may show or disseminate anything that may disrupt the law and order situation or cause tensions.

Kerala Minister R Bindu blames ‘frustration caused by globalisation’ and ‘conservative ideas of RSS’ for the horrific human sacrifice and cannibalism case

0

In a shocking development, Kerala Higher Education and Social Justice Minister Dr R Bindu has said that the disturbing incident of the human sacrifice of two women in Kerala was the result of frustration caused by globalisation and the efforts of some reactionary forces to restore hollow and obsolete value systems.

According to the Social Justice Minister, while such incidents occurred throughout India, they were quickly brought to light in the southern state because the public is more aware and vigilant. According to her, one of the reasons for this is “the frustration caused by globalisation.”

“People are falling into traps as they desperately try to make a quick buck as a result of globalization. In such a situation, some people are easily duped by false illusions that human sacrifices can bring them wealth. People are given illusory promises in order for them to commit such heinous crimes and scams,” the minister added.

The accused couple, Bhagaval Singh (68), a massage therapist, and his wife Laila (59) are examples of this, she claims, saying that they committed the crime for financial gain. “They wanted a little more financial stability in their lives, so they joined the prime accused Mohammed Shafi (52) who is a born criminal,” the Social Justice Minister went on to say.

R Bindu cited the efforts of some “reactionary” forces to revive “hollow” or “obsolete” value systems as another reason for such incidents.

What was even more shocking was the minister dragging RSS into the scene and blaming the organisation and its “actions” for the alleged revival of conservative and reactionary ideas.

When asked who is behind the alleged revival of such value systems, the minister said, “Who is seeking to resurrect reactionary forces among us? What is its name? Who is reviving or reintroducing very conservative, reactionary, and outmoded ideas?” When asked if she meant the Sangh Parivar or the RSS, Bindu replied, “Both.” “Yes. The consequences of their actions can be felt and seen all over the world, including Kerala, and we are watching with bated breath.” Despite the fact that Kerala is a progressive state with renaissance and public movements, as well as a high literacy rate, such incidents occur, and it is grave concern.

The minister claimed that the CM Pinarayi Vijayan-led state government is conducting awareness programs in various districts.

In the horrific Kerala human sacrifice case, police discovered various shreds of evidence, including weapons, during an eight-hour evidence collection drive at the Elanthoor house. This was the place where the three accused, Mohammad Shafi, Bhagaval Singh, and his wife Laila carried out the horrific murder of two women as a human sacrifice ritual for financial gains.

The three accused were present alongside the police at the house as one after another, several horrifying details of the crime emerged with the evidence.

Mohammad Shafi, the main accused reportedly told the investigation team during the search that 10Kg of human meat was stored in the freezer. On the fridge, Shafi’s fingerprints were also found. Shafi cooked the human meat in a pressure cooker and burnt the remains behind a massage centre run by accused Bhagaval Singh.

The Ernakulam Judicial First-Class Magistrate Court granted police custody of all three accused until October 24 at the request of Kerala Police.

Mohammad Shafi, the main accused, is said to have a strange taste for cruelty, inflicting brutal injuries on his victims.

According to the police, the sight of blood rushing out of the wounds of victims would excite Shafi. “He (Shafi) has now been exposed as a psychopath and a sexual pervert.” He derives sexual pleasure from his actions and will go to any length, including murder, for it,” said C Nagaraju, the Police Commissioner, adding that he is a sadist with a desire to injure, harm, and kill.

Laila, the accused who previously confessed to cooking the victims’ flesh, has expressed regret for her heinous actions. However, the main conspirator, Mohammad Shafi, has expressed no regret.

The Kerala Police’s special team investigating the Elanthoor human sacrifice case is looking into Mohammed Shafi’s financial dealings to see if there are any other people involved in the heinous murders.

Google slapped fine of Rs 1,338 Crores by Competition Commission of India for abusing Android platform: Details

Google has been fined Rs 1,338 crores by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) for abusing its market dominance in certain segments of the Indian ecosystem for Android-based mobile devices. The internet behemoth was told to quit using unethical business tactics by the fair trade regulator.

The (CCI) stated in a statement that it has also instructed Google to change its behaviour within a specific time frame. CCI is also investigating Google for allegedly compelling smart TV manufacturers to pre-install specific Google applications and for abusing its dominant position to force developers to only utilise its in-app pricing mechanism and promote its Google Pay service.

CCI said that because Google controls the Android operating system and other licences, it has an edge over its rivals in that it can pre-install the Chrome browser and other popular search entry points like search applications and widgets on Android devices. Additionally, Google possessed a considerable competitive advantage over its other revenue-generating apps on Android smartphones, such as YouTube.

The commission ruled that Google should not bar underprivileged original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) from using its Play Services plugins and that licencing Play Store to Device manufacturers should not be conditional on them pre-installing any Google application.

Findings of CCI

In the case against Google, the Commission identified five relevant markets to check on the behaviour of the company. They are (a) the market for licensable OS for smart mobile devices in India, (b) the market for an app store for Android smart mobile OS in India (c) the market for general web search services in India (d) market for non-OS specific mobile web browsers in India and (e) market for online video hosting platform (OVHP) in India.

The Press Release by CCI.

The commission determined that Google secured its users and continued to utilise its search services on mobile devices, allowing Google to generate its advertisement income without interruption. Furthermore, it aided Google in sustaining its investment there and developing its services at the expense of rivals. Consequently, Google’s underlying goal in imposing numerous limits through multiple agreements was to safeguard and strengthen its dominating position in general search services, and thus its earnings from search adverts.

The Commission thus punished Google for engaging in anti-competitive behaviour that was found to be in breach of Section 4 of the Competition Act 2002 by imposing a monetary fine and a cease and desist order in line with Section 27 of the Competition Act 2002. The Commission found apparent anomalies and broad caveats in Google’s presentation of several financial datasets. However, in the interest of fairness and to ensure that required market corrections occur as soon as possible, the Commission estimated the interim monetary penalty based on the data provided by Google.

The commission further ordered that the OEMs shall not be restricted from selecting from among Google’s proprietary applications to be pre-installed and shall not be forced to pre-install a bouquet of applications; Google shall not offer any monetary/other incentives to or enter into any arrangement with, OEMs to ensure exclusivity for its search services; Google shall not restrict users’ ability to uninstall Google’s pre-installed apps.

In India, Google is facing a slew of antitrust lawsuits. Following consumer complaints over Android-based phones, the CCI launched a thorough investigation in 2019. The CCI has penalised the internet behemoth for the second time. In 2018, it fined Google Rs 136 crore for market abuse in the Indian internet search sector.

Maharashtra: Eknath Shinde govt restores general consent to CBI for filing cases in the state, was withdrawn by Uddhav Thackeray govt

The Eknath Shinde government in Maharashtra revoked the denial of consent to CBI for filing cases in the state on 21st October 2022. Now the central investigation agency will not need any permission to file cases in the state. It is notable that the Maha Vikas Aghadi government led by Uddhav Thackeray had withdrawn the general consent to the Central Bureau of Investigation for filing cases in Maharashtra.

Now, two years after the Maha Vikas Aghadi government’s action, the current Maharashtra government is reversing that directive. Several of the Uddhav Thackeray government’s decisions were changed when the Eknath Shinde’s faction of Shiv Sena and BJP’s coalition government took office. This decision of banning general consent to CBI to file cases in the state was regarded as one of the Uddhav government’s key decisions.

On October 21, 2020, Uddhav Thackeray signed a plea from the Home department asking that the CBI not be allowed to undertake an inquiry in the state without prior permission from the state government. Anil Deshmukh served as the state’s home minister during the time. Anil Deshmukh is now on trial in the Antilia bomb threat case as well as the money laundering case.

The CBI must now seek case-specific permission from at least seven states that have withdrawn their blanket approval. The opposition has accused the BJP-led Center of frequently using the CBI and ED for political gain. In West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee’s government has withdrawn the general consent to CBI for filing cases in the state.

CBI is governed by the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, which defines the CBI as a special division of the Delhi Police and restricts its initial territorial power to Delhi. Therefore, before it can investigate cases in other states, it must obtain prior permission from that state government. But as a large number of corruption and criminal cases are handed over to the CBI by the governments and the courts, most states grant general consent to CBI. This general consent means that CBI does not need to seek permission for each individual case. But some state governments withdraw this consent due to disputes with the central government.

Rajasthan: Instagram ‘influencer’ Mustafa Arshad Khan issues death threats to Hindus in his reel, says ‘Kaafir’s, you all will be buried’, arrested

0

On Thursday, the Kota Police arrested an Islamist ‘influencer’ named Mustafa Arshad Ali aka Arshad Khan for making an Instagram reel and issuing death threats to Hindus. “Kaafir’s, you all will be buried when the time comes”, Khan said in his Instagram reel posted on October 17.

Confirming the development, Kota Police informed yesterday evening that Naeem Ali’s son Arshad Ali has been arrested. Earlier on October 19, Kota Police had tweeted that the higher authorities have been informed about the matter. Notably, while the police used the name Arshad Ali, the arrested person uses the name Arshan Khan in his social media account where the objectionable video was posted.

The incident came to light when Radharaman Das, the vice president of Kolkata-based ISKCON shared the video on Twitter. “Mustafa Arshad Khan say’s that when time will come they will bury al!ve all Hindus. He is an Islamic influencer and have more than 14,000 followers on Instagram. Muslims are clear about what they will do with Hindus when their time will come. Hindus, what you will do?”, he tweeted.

The video also was shared by Advocate Ashutosh J Dubey, a practising legal solicitor at Bombay High Court and the legal advisor of BJP Maharashtra. “He is openly threatening. What is the administration doing”, he tweeted on October 19 to which the Kota Police replied saying that the accused had been arrested and the senior police officials had been informed about the matter.

Dubey in the series of tweets further confirmed that the accused had been arrested for spreading religious hatred and openly threatening Hindus. He also requested the Kota Police to display the photograph or video of Khan’s arrest. He further demanded the police to direct the removal of the video in question from social media.

Khan in the video can be seen wearing a red T-shirt and throwing a terrible attitude to issue death threats to Hindus. “Hamare Khamoshi ki Alamat, Kafiro tumhare lie behtar nahi. Waqt ane par gadh denge tumhe, jaha tum khade ho vahhi (Kaafir’s, you all will be buried when the time comes)”, he said.

Khan has posted several Islamic videos on his Instagram account which is followed by around 14000 people. In one of his earlier videos he is heard saying that “do not follow any other political party like BJP or Congress. One day, we’ll form our own Islamic government Alam-e-Islam”. The video was posted on October 6 and was captioned with Islamic words which read, “Apni khud ki sarkar Inshahallah ameen”.

In another such video posted on October 1, Khan can be seen using derogatory language for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath and Home Minister Amit Shah. “Modi tu kursi par baitha hai, Yogi tu bhi kursi par baitha hai. Amit Shah tu bhi kursi par baitha hai lekin hukumat sirf mere khwaja ki chalti hai. Isilie tumhe tukde bhi mera khwaja hi deta hai (Though you people are sitting on the chairs and ruling the government, the world is being ruled by only Allah. And you all are controlled by him)”, he said. The video has been liked by around 18000 people.

However, though the police have arrested the individual for issuing open threats to Hindus, the video in question has not yet been taken down from the internet. The video was posted by Khan on October 17, was viewed by around 70,000 people, and has been liked by around 2600 people.

Russian Foreign Ministry calls outgoing British Prime Minister Liz Truss a “catastrophic illiterate disgrace’

0

On Thursday, the Foreign Ministry of Russia welcomed the departure of  British Prime Minister Liz Truss who resigned after 45 days in office, calling her a disgrace of a leader who would be known for her “catastrophic illiteracy.”

On her Telegram channel, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova wrote, “Britain has never known such a disgrace of a prime minister, and will be remembered for her catastrophic illiteracy.”

Liz Truss, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, resigned on Thursday, October 20, 2022. She resigned from the Prime Ministership on the 45th day of her tenure. Truss made the statement outside Downing Street after losing nearly all political power.

Liz Truss stated in her resignation speech, “I came into office at a time of great economic and international instability.” Families and businesses were concerned about their ability to pay their bills. Putin’s illegal war in Ukraine jeopardizes the security of the entire continent. And for far too long, our country had been held back by slow economic growth. The Conservative Party elected me with a mandate to change this.”

Truss served as British foreign secretary before becoming prime minister last month, a position in which she was chastised by Russian officials for what they saw as her failed attempts to improve relations between the United Kingdom and Russia.

Veteran Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov outlined his talks with Truss as “conversations between the deaf and the dumb” during a visit to Moscow briefly before the invasion of Ukraine.

During her tense meeting with Lavrov, she also confused two Russian regions with Ukrainian regions, prompting mockery from the Russian diplomat and across Russian state television talk shows.

Dmitry Medvedev, the former Russian President taking a dig at Liz Truss, wrote on Twitter, “Bye bye @trussliz, congrats to lettuce”, making a reference to the British Daily Star tabloid’s livestream asking whether Truss’s troubled tenure would outlast the shelf-life of a lettuce.

Notably, the Russian media has conducted extensive and mirthful coverage of Truss’ resignation. On a political talk show ‘Time Will Tell’ a guest said that Liz Truss had all the three traits requisite to thrive in British politics, “Stupidity, arrogance, and belligerence.”

Russian officials have been critical of Truss’s term of office from the start, revelling in her numerous gaffes. Lavrov said Truss didn’t know how to compromise when she was appointed in September and questioned how the British leader could say she didn’t know if French President Emmanuel Macron was a “friend or foe.”

Truss’ high-profile photo shoot in Estonia last year, where she donned a flak jacket and helmet to ride in a tank during a visit to British troops stationed in the Baltic country, was also mocked by Zakharova on Thursday.

Even before Russia invaded Ukraine, relations between Moscow and London had deteriorated to their lowest point in decades, following the poisoning of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal in 2018 in Salisbury, Britain.
