Mamata Banerjee tries to distance herself from SSC scam as accused minister goes missing from swear-in list: Here is how the token step might not work

On August 3, Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee dumped the second disgraced minister after Partha Chatterjee. As per reports, Paresh Chandra Adhikari, whose name surfaced in the infamous SSC scam, found no place in the list of ministers who were supposed to take oath during the Cabinet reshuffle. Adhikari held the responsibility of State Minister for the Department of School Education.

Reportedly, Banerjee has induced fresh faces in the cabinet while a few names, including that of Adhikari, have been removed from the list. It is noteworthy that a PIL was filed in the Calcutta High Court seeking directions to remove Adhikari from his post. In the PIL, the petitioner alleged Adhikary was one of the direct beneficiaries of the SCC scam.

The PIL was filed by state BJP leader Pradipta Arjun before the bench of chief justice Prakash Srivastava and Justice Rajarshi Bhardwaj. In his PIL, Arjun argued that the orders passed by the single bench of Calcutta High Court comprising Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay clearly showed that Adhikari misused his position to get a job for his daughter Ankita Adhikari as a higher secondary political science teacher. During the process, another eligible candidate was deprived of the job. The court had asked Ankita to return two years of salary and dismissed her from the school.

Shunning ministers might not help Mamata Banerjee

While WB CM Mamata Banerjee is trying her level best to get rid of the blot named ‘SSC Scam’ from her image by shunning the accused minister, it might not help her in the long run. Notably, it was reported on July 31 that Partha Chatterjee had allegedly confessed the involvement of the party high command in the School Service Commission (SSC) scam.

Reports suggest that Chatterjee told investigators that everyone in the TMC, including top party leadership, was privy to his activities. He alleged that fellow TMC members were aware that money was collected in exchange for providing government school jobs to ineligible candidates.

Besides, Partha Chatterjee has also alleged that the top leaders of the Trinamool Congress visited the properties that he bought in the name of Arpita Mukherjee. He also said that the party needed a front like an actress to stash the money.

Speaking on the matter, an ED official said that Chatterjee claimed to be just a custodian of the money. He neither asked nor accepted money from any candidate. He was allegedly following orders of the party’s senior leaders and was supposed to sign documents prepared by others.

Another official of the central agency informed that Partha Chatterjee has confessed to the involvement of other Departments in providing jobs via fraudulent means to ineligible candidates.

Considering what Partha said during the questioning by ED, it can be assumed that Banerjee was aware of what was happening during recruitments. Simply removing the accused ministers is not going to save her name from getting dragged into the controversy.

Uganda: Islamist mob attacks Christian evangelists with weapons after 8 Muslims agree to leave Islam in conversion camp, 1 person dead, Bibles burned

In early July, a Muslim mob reportedly murdered a Christian in Uganda by attacking him with sticks and stones. The deceased has been identified as Robert Bwenje and the two assailants have been identified as Ashirafu Kasamba and Kabagambe Kadiri. The Islamists had assaulted Bwenje and a pastor who was with him. The mob had also burned the copies of Bible, as per reports.

According to the reports, the incident is said to have happened on July 6 when Robert Bwenje had accompanied Assistant Pastor Ambrose Mugisha of Elim Pentecostal Church in Nyamiringa village, Kapeke Sub-County, Kiboga District to an ‘open-air debate’. The debate was about a comparison between Islam and Christianity, held in the Sirimula village of Kyankwanzi District.

During the debate, eight Muslims including two women were reportedly impressed by the arguments made by the evangelists and had agreed to accept Christianity by leaving Islam. Assistant Pastor Ambrose Mugisha has stated that the local Islamists were angered over the incident and had wanted to disrupt the event, but could not do anything because police security was provided for the same.

But as the duo returned from the conversion camp-cum ‘debate’, a Muslim mob appeared from bushes and led the attack on the two who were crossing a swamp. The mob raised slogans of ‘Allah Akbar, Allah Akbar’ and beat them with sticks and sharp weapons, as per reports. “They removed the Quran and then burned the rest of the books, including the Bibles, and then beat us with sticks”, said Pastor Mugisha to media later.

He added that he could only identify one assailant named Ashirafu Kasamba who attacked him on his head. “I then jumped into the water and managed to swim and cross to the other side”, he noted. Meanwhile, the Islamists continued to beat Bwenje in the middle of the swamp and fled from the spot leaving Bwenje bleeding in the water. Later a passerby spotted the victim as Christians and took them to the hospital where Bwenje succumbed to his injuries.

Pastor Godfrey Ssemujju of Elim Pentecostal Church who visited the duo at the hospital confirmed that Bwenje was 28-year-old and died at around 11 pm on July 10. The Police have reported the case and have arrested one of the accused Kasamba. They have charged him with attempted murder.

According to Pastor Mugisha who has survived the attack, the Islamists including Kasamba continue to threaten him giving him days to re-convert the eight Muslims that he had converted to Christianity earlier. “We are giving days to bring back the Muslims that you converted to Christianity. We know you are hiding them,” the Islamists had reportedly messaged on the Pastor’s phone.

The report mentions that several churches in Kiboga districts are being attacked by Islamists. Earlier on June 26, the Muslim extremists from Kindeke village attacked Pastor Baingana James, demolished his church building in Rwomuriro village, and threatened to kill him if he continued leading Muslims to Christianity. This is after Pastor James converted seven other Muslims to Christianity.

Pastor James stated that he had received a call from an Islamist named Sheikh Mwesigye Ja’afari who asked the Pastor to leave Kindeke village and return the seven converted Muslims. On not taking the threat seriously, the Islamists attacked him and his congregation while they were in the Church for their Sunday service.

IB flags security threat from Jihadis ahead of I-Day, recommends monitoring areas with Rohingyas, cites Kanhaiya Lal murder too: Reports

The Intelligence Bureau (IB) has warned the Delhi Police of a possible terror attack by Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and other radical Jihadi groups ahead of India’s 75th Independence Day on August 15th.

On Thursday, the IB submitted a 10-page report, in which it directed the Delhi Police to put in place strict entry rules at Red Fort ahead of Independence Day on August 15.

The IB report referred to incidents like the assassination of Japan’s former prime minister Shinzo Abe and the brutal killings of the Hindu tailor Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur and Umesh Kohle in Amravati at the hands of radical Islamists and directed the Delhi Police to keep a watchful eye out for radical organisations and their activities in crowded locations.

The IB report mentioned how by providing Jaish and Lashkar terrorists with logistical support, the Pakistani ISI is encouraging terrorist attacks in India. The report also spoke about the instructions given to JeM and LeT to target powerful leaders and important places.

Prior to Independence Day, the IB has directed the Delhi Police and other states to keep an eye on extremist outfits. The ISI-founded Lashkar-e-Khalsa now includes Afghan fighters as members. This terrorist group is capable of conducting a significant terrorist strike in Jammu & Kashmir, read the report.

It also included recommendations for close monitoring of the Delhi neighbourhoods where Rohingya and Afghan Nationals and Sudanese nationals reside. Additionally, IB instructed the police to be on high alert in order to counter the threat posed by VVIED, sticky bombs, and Tiffin bombs.

The report said that the terrorist groups LeT and JeM may carry out the attack using UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) and paragliders and therefore, the BSF has been asked to remain vigilant.

Amid IB warning, Delhi Police to install more than 1,000 live streaming CCTV motion detection for Independence Day security

Following the warning, the Delhi Police have decided to install more than 1,000 Internet Protocol (IP) based CCTV cameras in and around the Red Fort.

According to reports, 80% of the cameras would be IP-based 2-megapixel CCTV cameras and the rest would be 4-megapixel IP-based CCTV cameras. They would be installed in every corner of the venue.

The areas to be put under surveillance are the New Delhi District, North District, South East District, Central District, Security Unit and North West District. A large number of cameras will be installed in the North and Central districts which include the outskirts of the Red Fort, where the Independence Day celebrations are being held.

These sophisticated IP-based cameras will be equipped with features like face detection, motion detection, tripwire, audio detection, intrusion, defocus and abandoned/lost objects. Apart from providing a full HD 1080P live view of the location, it will also share data in real-time for facial recognition servers.

This camera will include a built-in 30X automatic optical zoom lens for enhanced detection, as well as a 12X digital zoom option. The camera must have Infra Red (IR) built-in and cover a distance of up to 150 meters for better viewing at night, the report by the Delhi police read.

Red Fort siege during India’s 71st Republic Day

It may be recalled that last year, during Republic Day, violent rioters claiming to be ‘farmers’ had stormed into Delhi’s Red Fort, assaulted policemen, and vandalized the monument. The rioters who unleashed mayhem on the streets of the national capital and carried out the insurrection against the state by denigrating the national flag have also been caught urinating on the walls of the national monument. In a shocking act, the rioters who had climbed the Red Fort to hoist the alleged Khalistan flag by throwing away the tricolour desecrated the premises by urinating on the monument. 83 policemen were injured during the violence that ensued.

It was also revealed that proscribed Khalistani terror organisation Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) was behind the Red Fort siege and rioting in Delhi. They had even announced a reward of  $250,000 for waving Khalistani flags at the Red Fort.

Sandy Hook defamation case: Alex Jones’ lawyers sending all his texts to the opposing lawyer, the ‘insurrection committee’ and perjury

In the latest development in the defamation case in USA’s Texas against Infowars host Alex Jones, the lawyer representing one of the parents of Sandy Hook massacre victims has revealed in the courtroom that Jones’s lawyers had sent him the entire digital copy of his mobile phone, including 3 years worth of text messages regarding the Sandy Hook incident, ‘by mistake’.

It is notable here that Jones had claimed in court that he had never received any text regarding the Sandy Hook school shooting. Mark Bankston, the lawyer representing the parents of a 6-year-old boy who was a victim of the Sandy Hook school shooting in 2012 was confronting him.

Alex Jones, the host of Infowars, had long maintained that the 2012 school massacre was a ‘hoax’.

Following the exchange, the judge in the Travis County court reprimanded Jones for lying under oath. “This is not your show. You must tell the truth when you testify,” Judge Maya Guerra said to Jones.

As per reports, during a court hearing in Texas, Mark Bankston showed Alex Jones a copy of text messages that criticized his platform’s coverage of the 2020 covid pandemic, likening it to their earlier claims that the Sandy Hook school shooting was a hoax.

Alex Jones was on the witness stand and when he expressed surprise at the text messages, Mark Bankston reportedly revealed that his own attorneys had sent them ‘by mistake’.

“Do you know where I got this? Your attorneys messed up and sent me a digital copy of your entire cellphone, with every text message you’ve sent for the past years”, Bankston replied, as per The Guardian. Bankston further added that he had informed the attorneys about the mistake, but they apparently did not take any steps to retrieve the texts or stop them from being used in court.

Jones acknowledged during the exchange that the texts were his and admitted indirectly that he had sworn under oath that he did not have any messages in his phone about the Sandy Hook shooting.

Mark Bankston then joked that he now has his ‘Perry Mason’ moment, referring to the popular TV show where the lawyer gets people to confess their crimes on the witness stand.

Alex Jones had said the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting was a hoax, but now admits it was 100% real

Infowars host Alex Jones is facing a defamation case for claiming that the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting was a ‘hoax’ by the Obama government. Through many of his shows, Jones had kept on claiming that the deadly 2012 school shooting in Connecticut was “an elaborate ruse to force gun control in the USA”, and the grieving parents were all actors.

He is being sued by Neil Heslin and Scarlett Lewis, the parents of 6-year-old victim Jesse Lewis who had lost his life in the massacre, along with 19 other students and 6 teachers.

Following the courtroom drama, Jones reportedly admitted that he had been ‘irresponsible’ and that the shooting was 100% real.

Jan 6 committee may request to see the texts to find out Trump connection

As per a report in Rollingstone, the House committee investigating January 6, 2020, Capitol riots in the USA is preparing to subpoena the texts of Alex Jones that are now with Mark Bankston and his team. The House committee is investigating former US president Donald Trump’s alleged role in instigating the Capitol riots. Alex Jones is already under probe for helping to get public support for the ‘insurrection’.

Alex Jones is a far-right conservative radio show host who works from Austin Texas.

ED seals Young India office, says Mallikarjun Kharge came and left without cooperating with the raid, Congress now plans ‘protest’: Details

Following the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) decision to temporarily seal Young India’s office located inside Congress-owned National Herald’s building (Herald House) in Delhi, the Congress Party has called a meeting of all its members from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha at the Congress Parliamentary Party office to decide the next course of action.

Earlier, it was reported that the National Herald building was sealed, but later the reports came out that only the office of Young India was sealed, not the entire building. The action by the central investigation agency has been taken as a part of an ongoing money laundering investigation. Reports suggest that Congress MPs might give adjournment motion notice in the Parliament over ED’s action against Young India.

Furthermore, additional police personnel were also deployed outside the Congress headquarters at 24 Akbar Road, the resident of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and the residence of interim party President Sonia Gandhi at 10 Janpath. The arrangement was made following inputs received from Special Branch that protesters might gather in large numbers at the three locations after ED’s decision to seal Young India’s office.

ED alleges Congress did not cooperate in the raid

As per reports, ED officials said they sealed the office as there was no one present when they reached to raid Young India’s office. Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge had visited the building when ED officials were there, but he allegedly refused to cooperate and left the building. ED has sealed the office temporarily and summoned Kharge to be present for the raid.

An ED official told Aaj Tak, “Principal Officer Kharge came but left the building without participating in the raid. We have summoned him for the raid. Once our search is over in the presence of an authorized person, we will remove the seal.”

On the other hand, Kharge and Congress party denied the allegations levelled by the investigation agency. In a statement, Kharge said neither ED sought permission to search the premises nor did he stop them from doing any search.

Congress denied permission to protest on August 5

Congress has connected the presence of an additional Police force outside the AICC office to the protests they had planned for August 5. During a press conference, Congress leader Ajay Maken informed that the Delhi Police had denied permission for the protests planned for Friday. He said a letter from the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) office was sent to Congress denying permission for the protests the party had planned against price rise and unemployment.

In the statement during the press conference, Maken said, “Today we received a letter from DCP that we can`t protest on August 5 & AICC was turned into a Police cantonment. The government may suppress us as much as they want, but we`ll protest against inflation, unemployment, GST on edible items & go ahead with our schedule even if jailed.”

During the nationwide protests on August 5, Congress MPs were supposed to hold ‘Chalo Rashtrapati Bhavan’ from Parliament. On the other hand, CWC members and senior Congress leaders were scheduled to participate in ‘PM House Gherao’.

Faith a tool for politics: How “Brahmin” Rahul Gandhi gave up his “Janeu” to join the Lingayat sect for the sake of politics

On August 3, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was initiated into the Lingayat sect by the seer of Muruga Mutt, Shivamurthy Muruga Sharana, located in central Karnataka. In a tweet, Gandhi said, “It is an absolute honour to visit Sri Jagadguru Murugharajendra Vidyapeetha and receive the ‘Ishtalinga Deekshe’ from Dr Sri Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru.”

His initiation took place in front of various party leaders. After a conversation with Lingayat seers of various mutts, the seer of Muruga Mutt, Shivamurthy Muruga Sharana initiated Gandhi into Lingayat sect.

There are three aspects here that are interesting to observe. Firstly, Rahul Gandhi spend the better part of the last 5-6 years claiming that he is a Janeudhari Brahmin. Second, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and his predecessor BS Yeddyurappa hail from the sect, therefore, Rahul Gandhi is seeing this as a purely political move. Thirdly, the fact that it was the Congress that played the dangerous Lingayat politics in Karnataka.

As Gandhi has been initiated into the Lingayat sect, it is essential to remind that back in 2017, Congress leader Randeep Surjewala had informed the people of the nation that Rahul Gandhi was a ‘Janeu Dhari Hindu’. He had made the statement after images of Gandhi’s name in Somnath Temple’s ‘Non-Hindu’ register had surfaced, leading to controversy. In retaliation, Surjewala had said, “Not only is Rahul Gandhi Ji a Hindu, but he is also a ‘Janeu Dhari’ Hindu. So BJP should not bring down the political discourse to this level.”

Why Rahul Gandhi has to let go of Janeu?

After being initiated into the Lingayat sect, Rahul Gandhi cannot wear Janeu as the members of the Lingayat community do not wear it. Therefore, it is safe to assume that Rahul chose to be a Janeu Dhari Hindu when he thought he could potentially get votes from the Hindu community by pretending to be from their community, however, with Karnataka politics heating up, he has no qualms in giving up his identity, so to speak, to be initiated into the Lingayat sect.

With the current and past chief minister of the state being from the Lingayat community, Rahul Gandhi and the Congress have realised that the community holds substantial sway in Karnataka politics. Owing to that, he seems to have given up his Janeu and got inducted into the Lingayat sect.

Congress’s obsession with Lingayat

The Lingayat community, also known as the Veerashaiva community, is a politically dominating group in Karnataka. Rahul Gandhi’s, or better to say, Congress’s obsession with this community might be entirely political. It has to be noted that before the 2018 Assembly elections in Karnataka, the then-Congress government had given the status of a separate religion to Lingayats, which was overturned by Karnataka High Court.

Lingayats comprise 17 per cent of the population in Karnataka. They have domination in close to 100 Assembly seats. Most of the community members live in North Karnataka. So far, the community has given nine Chief Ministers to Karnataka.

Who are the Lingayats?

The members of the Lingayat community are Bhagwan Shiva devotees. It is a sub-section of Sanatan Dharma that was started back in the 12th century by saint and philosopher Basavanna, who is also known as Saint Basveshvara. He was born in a Brahmin family in 1131 AD. As the stories go, when Basavanna was eight years old, he had already formed dismay in his heart against the ‘social evils’ like the caste system, ‘Brahmin supremacy’ and more.

Following his Upnayan ceremony, where he wore Janeu for the first time, Basavanna decided to let go of the holy thread and left home. Over time, he rejected ritualistic worship and the pre-eminence of Vedas. His followers do not indulge in idol worshipping and pray only to the Crystal Lingam that they tie around their necks.

Basavanna gave the philosophy that the Isht or Bhagwan that one has to pray for lives inside his/her body. He opposed idol worship and called the human body a ‘temple’. Lingayat community finds its space in the Vamana Purana, and because of that, a section within the community believed that Lingayat is an ancient sect and Basavanna was one of the saints of the sect.

As the members of the Lingayat community do not follow the regular practices of Hinduism or Sanatan Dharma, they do not wear Janeu. Hence, after becoming part of the sect, Rahul Gandhi is now certainly not a ‘Janeu Dhari Hindu’.

Rahul Dholakia, who attacked ‘The Kashmir Files’, pontificates against boycott calls faced by Bollywood movies: Here’s why he is wrong

As Aamir Khan-starrer Laal Singh Chaddha and Akshay Kumar’s Raksha Bandhan face boycott calls over Hinduphobic tendencies exhibited by artists associated with the said movies, filmmaker Rahul Dholakia, best known for glorifying gangster Abdul Latif in his film Raees, took the opportunity to hold forth on the supposed downsides of such boycott campaigns.

In a tweet aimed at criticising the boycott campaigns faced by Laal Singh Chaddha and Raksha Bandhan, Dholakia tweeted, “Trolling a film because a cast or crew members ideology differs from yours is unfair to the other hundreds who have worked hard to make the film. They have also pinned their hopes on the success of the film to help realises their dreams. Spare a thought.”

Rahul Dholakia
Source: Twitter

According to Dholakia, since hundreds of people work on a movie, it is unfair to them if the film faces trolling over the difference in ideology of the cast or crew members of the unit. He also added that the realisation of the dreams of those people is inextricably linked with the success of the movies.

Why Rahul Dholakia’s pontification over boycott calls is misguided

This is a classic case of psychological gaslighting, emotionally manipulating victims into believing that their objection hurts others financially while defending the provocateurs accused of making offensive remarks. Dholakia, in essence, is guilt-tripping those who voice boycott calls after being hurt by the objectionable remarks made by the actors and artists against their cherished beliefs and holds them responsible if the movie fails at the box office.

Dholakia’s argument is flawed on several levels. Firstly, having a differing political ideology is no point of contention. Constantly insulting Hinduism and making unwarranted comments on India is. Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha is facing boycotts because the actor had said he was considering moving out of the country over “rising intolerance”. Similarly, Akshay Kumar’s Raksha Bandhan was embroiled in a controversy recently after Hinduphobic tweets of its writer Kanika Dhillon had gone viral. Several old tweets by Dhillon where she made Gau Mutra jibes and demonised Jai Shri Ram had surfaced on the internet, which had spurred boycott calls against the movie.

Even so, when filmmakers make a movie, the cast invariably takes one or the other stand that they depict through the picturisation of the film. So, when the cast and crew members can take a stand, why can’t the audience take a stand of not watching the movie because their views do not jibe with the ideology of the cast?

Secondly, howsoever callous it may sound, the audience is under no obligation to provide a livelihood to the cast and crew that work on a movie. If that were the case, no film would have failed at the box office. People flock to the theatres for entertainment and not to support the film industry. The entertainment quotient of the movie ultimately decides whether the movie will become a success or end up being a disaster. So Dholakia’s claim that the dreams of hundreds of crew members are linked to the success of the movie is nothing but hogwash.

Thirdly, just like the Constitution of India grants freedom of expression to actors and crew members to ‘bastardise historical facts‘ to make them compatible with their present-day political ideology, the same constitution grants freedom of choice to the audience to decide what films they want to view and which to reject. The audience is well-within its rights to make boycott calls against a movie whose cast and crew members do not refrain from mocking their faith and country.

Perhaps, the most fundamental flaw in Dholakia’s argument is that the box-office performance of a movie determines the fate of hundreds of crew members associated with the film. Movie pundits will tell you that it is always the producers, directors, and on occasions, actors who have a share in profits, who bear the brunt of the failure when the movie tanks at the box office.

The hundreds of crew members whom Dholakia is referring to in his tweets are already paid up for their work even before the movie hits the theatres. Therefore, the argument that the realisation of their dreams depends on the movie’s success is profoundly misleading and patently wrong.

While Rahul Dholakia moralises on boycott calls made against movies by Hinduphobic artists, he had made a veiled attack on ‘The Kashmir Files’

More importantly, it is a bit rich coming from Dholakia to express concerns for the crew members of a movie since he did not feel the same way when he made a veiled attack against ‘The Kashmir Files’, a film that chronicled the violence faced by Kashmiri Hindus at the hands of their Islamic perpetrators.

In March this year, Dholakia tweeted, “Hate sells. Love used to. Sleaze sells. Melodrama used to. Propaganda sells. Fantasy sells. Truth never did. Follow the crowd. Flow with the majority… the price of flowing against is high, doesn’t sell. #Random.”

The tweet was posted on March 13, two days after the release of ‘The Kashmir Files’, leaving little doubt as to whom it was meant for. As such, it was not the first time detractors had launched an attack against Vivek Agnihotri’s latest movie. Ever since he announced that he would be making a movie on the genocide of Kashmiri Pandits, assorted ‘liberals’ and Islamists have indulged in exercises that aimed to discredit the movie.

However, Rahul Dholakia had then not bothered to ask ‘liberals’ to stop attacking the movie as that film may also have had hundreds of crew members whose realisation of dreams relied on the economic success of the film.

In a democratic country like India that enshrines freedom of expression and choice, just like people are entitled to exercise their freedom of speech to speak on anything, except, of course, certain proscribed things that can attract “Sar Tan Se Juda” chants and beheading calls, the audience is also entitled to decide which movie they want to watch and which to boycott.

Directorate of Revenue Intelligence detects Rs 2,217 crore customs duty evasion by Vivo Mobile India, had earlier found tax evasion by Oppo

On 3rd August 2022, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) informed that it has detected Rs 2217 crores custom duty evasion by Vivo Mobile India Private Limited. The information was shared through a press release by the Press Information Bureau. Vivo Mobile India Private Limited is a subsidiary company of Vivo Communication Technology Co. Ltd., Guangdong, China. Vivo Mobile India is engaged in the business of manufacturing, assembling, wholesale trading as well as distributing of mobile handsets and accessories thereof.

The press release said, during an investigation pertaining to M/s Vivo Mobile India Private Limited, DRI detected Customs duty evasion of around Rs 2,217 crore. During the probe, DRI officials launched raids at Vivo India’s industrial plants, which resulted in the seizure of irrefutable evidence suggesting deliberate mis-declaration in the specifications of certain components sourced by the organization to be utilized in the production of cellphones.

Vivo India misleadingly contended unlawful duty exemption savings of Rs 2,217 crore as a byproduct of this misinformation. With the conclusion of the inquiry, a Show Cause Notice was served to Vivo India, requesting Rs. 2,217 crores in Customs duty under the terms of the Customs Act of 1962. Vivo India has voluntarily made a deposit of Rs 60 crore to cover its differential duty burden. It is notable that, show cause notices demanding duty of Rs. 4,403.88 crores have recently been issued to Oppo Mobiles India Private Limited as part of another series of inquiries by DRI.

Both Vivo and Oppo are owned by Chinese multinational giant BBK Electronics Corporation. Oppo has two other subsidiaries, OnePlus and Realme.

Umesh Kolhe Murder: NIA arrests two more culprits accused of raising funds for the murder and providing asylum to the killers

On 3rd August 2022, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested two more accused in connection with the murder of Umesh Kolhe in Amravati, Maharashtra. The number of accused arrested so far in the case has reached nine. Umesh Kolhe, 54, was stabbed to death on 21st June 2022 for purportedly sending a post supporting the former spokesperson of Bharatiya Janata Party Nupur Sharma on a social messaging platform.

The NIA, which is now probing this case, apprehended two persons, Murshid Ahmed Abdul Rashid (age 49, resident of Transport Nagar) and Abdul Arbaz Abdul Salim (age 23, resident of Lalkhadi). Police sources said that Abdul Rashid is accused of collecting funds and Abdul Salim is accused of sheltering the other accused in the murder case. Abdul Salim is reportedly the driver of Irfan Khan, the mastermind behind the case. The NIA team has started questioning the accused and it is likely that the houses of the accused will be searched. They will also be brought before the court, where the NIA will request custody.

It is worth noting that, as of now, the NIA has detained seven persons in connection with the murder of Umesh Kolhe, and on July 22, a special NIA court remanded all seven accused to 14 days in judicial custody. Irfan Khan, the main culprit in the case, was apprehended in Nagpur. The other arrested accused include Irfan Khan (age 35), Yusuf Khan (age 44), Muddsir Ahmad (age 22), Shahrukh Pathan (age 25), Abdul Thoufique (age 24) Shoaib Khan (age 22), and Atib Rashid (age 22). Yusuf Khan is a veterinary doctor and was a friend of the deceased Umesh Kolhe. Other accused are daily wage workers. All of them live in Amravati. So far, seven of the eight suspects have been apprehended, with Shamim Ahmed still on the run.

The investigation into Umesh Kohle’s murder began in Police Station City Kotvali in Amaravati, Maharashtra. On July 2, the NIA re-registered the case and took over the investigation. The case has been registered under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) Sections 16, 18, and 20 and the Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections 34, 153 (A), 153 (B), 120 (B), and 302.

As per what is known about the case so far, Umesh Kolhe’s friend Yusuf Khan had spotted Kolhe’s WhatsApp message supporting Nupur Sharma, and had circulated it in other WhatsApp groups. He had also informed about it to Sheikh Irfan Khan, who runs an NGO. Irfan Khan then plotted the murder, and gave the responsibility of recce to Maulana Mudassir Ahmed alias Sonu Raza Sheikh Ibrahim. After that, Irfan Khan engaged four daily wage workers Shahrukh Pathan, Abdul Taufiq, Shoaib Khan and Atib Rashid, who had worked for his NGO earlier, for the execution of the plan.

On the night of June 21, Shoaib stabbed Umesh Kolhe in his neck. Initially the police had said that this was a robbery gone wrong, but after there was a change in the government in Maharashtra, the police admitted that Kohle was killed for supporting Nupur Sharma.

Enforcement Directorate seals National Herald office, instructs premises not to be opened without prior permission

In the latest development in the National Herald Case, the Enforcement Directorate has temporarily sealed the National Herald office in New Delhi and instructed that the premises not be opened without prior permission. The action came a day after the ED conducted raids at 12 locations linked to Congress mouthpiece National Herald in connection with a money laundering case.

Herald House is the registered office address of Associate Journals Limited (AJL), the National Herald newspaper’s publisher, which is under probe over its acquisition by Young Indian, a firm linked to the Gandhi family.

A notice duly signed by Kuldeep Singh, the assistant director of the Enforcement Directorate has been pasted outside the National Herald office which reads that the premises cannot be opened without the prior permission of the agency.

On Tuesday, had raided 12 locations linked to National Herald and recovered a few incriminating documents in the raid. Few digital devices were also seized by the agency. As per reports, the statements of some National Herald employees were also recorded.

Moreover, the location of a Kolkata-based shell company involved in the case was also recovered amid the raids.

The National Herald scam is one of the most notable legal cases in Indian history, as the Gandhis are directly accused. The Mother-Son duo of Congress President Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi, along with their aides – Oscar Fernandez, Motilal Vohra and Sam Pithroda are alleged to have been involved in massive ‘cheating and breach of trust’ in the acquisition of Associated Journals Ltd (AJL) by Young Indian Pvt Ltd (YIL). Assets worth crores of rupees had been allegedly transferred for purposes other than originally intended for a paltry sum. Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi got unconditional bail in December 2015.

Recently, both the mother-son duo were questioned by Enforcement Directorate in connection with a money laundering case. While Rahul Gandhi was questioned by ED on June 13 for over 6 hours and his statement was recorded under Section 50 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi finally appeared before the agency on July 21.
