Haryanvi singer comes up with a counter to Sidhu Moosewala’s pro-Khalistani SYL song: Here is what it says

The long-standing dispute over the Satluj Yamuna Link canal between Punjab and Haryana is back in limelight after the release of the deceased Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala’s song ‘SYL’. In the controversial song, which has been blocked by YouTube in India now, Moosewala talked about ‘sovereignty’ for Punjab and talked about the return of Khalistani terrorist Jattana. Now in response to the song, Haryanvi singer Masoom Sharma has released his own version of SYL.

In the song that can be heard here, Masoom Sharma has mentioned how the water from SYL canal is a right of the people of Haryana as per the agreement during the creation of the state of Haryana in 1966. Responding to Moosewala’s lyrics that they will not give even a drop of water, Sharma goes on to say in the song that Haryana will not take any drop, but 50% of the water as per the agreements.

Mirroring the concept used in Moosewala’s song showing various imagery in the video of the song, Sharma shares photographs of SYL agreement signed between the states for water-sharing, and also the Supreme Court judgment that said Punjab can not make laws related to SYL on its own. The video also starts with visuals from protests against farm laws last year when Haryana farmers stepped up to help protestors from Punjab.

The video has several visuals of the SYL part that has already been constructed in Haryana, and the images of dry parched land in Southern Haryana, which will get water for irrigation if SYL canal is completed. Sharma also mentions the patriotic nature of Haryanvis in the song, a sharp contrast to Moosewala who was asking for sovereignty for Punjab in his song.

Sharma ends his song by stating that they respect all religions, but when it comes to the right of Haryana, they will take what is their right as per the agreements.

What is SYL water dispute

The canal, once completed, will enable sharing of the water from rivers Beas and Ravi between the two states. Before Haryana was formed, undivided Punjab was given 7.20 MAF (Million-acre feet) out of the total 15.85 MAF water flowing down Ravi and Beas. Among other stakeholders, Rajasthan was allotted 8 MAF while Jammu and Kashmir got 0.65 MAF.

After the creation of Haryana, the center issued a notification allocating 3.5 MAF to Haryana out of the 7.2 MAF allotted to Punjab before the reorganisation. In a reassessment in 1981, the water flowing down Beas and Ravi was estimated at 17.17 MAF, out of which 4.22 MAF was allocated to Punjab, 3.5 MAF to Haryana, and 8.6 MAF to Rajasthan.

In 1982, PM Indira Gandhi launched the construction of SYL canal at Kapoori village in Patiala. However, Akalis started a protest movement against it by the name of Kapoori Morcha. In 1985, the then PM Rajiv Gandhi signed an agreement with Akali Dal chief Sant Harchand Singh Longowal for a new tribunal to assess the water. Shortly afterward, Longowal was killed by the terrorists in Punjab.

In 1990, the chief engineer working on the project ML Sekhri and a Superintending Engineer Avtar Singh Aulakh were killed by Balwinder Jattana (mentioned in Sidhu Moosewala’s song), and following that, the construction of the canal came to a halt.

Amidst ongoing political crisis in Maharashtra, ED summons Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut for questioning in fraud case

In the middle of the ongoing political turmoil in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena Member of Parliament Sanjay Raut has been called by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday (June 28) for interrogation in connection with the Pravin Raut and Patra Chawl land fraud case. Satyavrat Kumar, Joint Director of the Enforcement Directorate, confirmed that Sena Rajya Sabha MP Raut had received a notice.

Recently, in the Rs 1,034-crore Patra Chawl land scam case, the ED confiscated property worth Rs 9 crore related to Sanjay Raut’s accomplice Pravin Raut and assets worth around Rs 2 crore associated with Sanjay Raut’s wife Varsha.

In February, ED officers investigating the Patra Chawl land fraud discovered that Pravin Raut had transferred Rs 55 lakh to Varsha from the profits of fraud through his wife’s account. The ED further stated that hotel accommodations and tickets for Sanjay Raut and those connected to him had been booked for local and foreign travel.

This development is noteworthy in light of the recent political situation in Maharashtra, where Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde has been camping with several of MLAs at a hotel in Guwahati. Following the secession of Sena strongman Shinde and at least 40 party MLAs, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government is on the brink of falling. Several Independents have already abandoned the MVA leadership in favour of the Shinde camp.

Even during the crisis, Raut has been quite vociferous throughout. Recently In a strange and scary declaration, the notorious politician vowed that only the dead bodies of the dissident MLAs will return to Mumbai. Raut said, “When bodies of these forty MLAs will arrive, they will be directly sent for postmortem.” After a brief silence after this comment by Raut, a party worker from the audience said, “No sir, we will directly immerse their ashes.” To which, Raut quipped, “Yes, we will send them to Chatt Pooja.”

Gujarat riot case: Ahmedabad Crime Branch seeks custody of jailed anti-Modi cop Sanjiv Bhatt, had attempted to sensationalise the Gujarat riots by lying

Two days after a case was filed against jailed former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt, retired DGP RB Sreekumar, and ‘activist’ Teesta Setalvad for conspiring to fabricate testimony to influence the proceedings of the 2002 Gujarat riots case, the Ahmedabad Crime Branch has sought Bhatt’s remand. Bhatt is currently lodged in a Palanpur jail in a drug peddling case.

According to the FIR, the accused attempted to generate sensation by lying to investigators about the Gujarat riots. According to the FIR, the SIT thoroughly investigated their accusations and found them to be false. The same comments were also made by the Supreme Court while rejecting the plea of Zakia Jafri.

According to a report by the Republic TV, the officials want to confront Sanjiv Bhatt, Ex-DGP RB Sreekumar and so-called activist Teesta Setalvad with each other and also question the trio about the documentary evidence from the 2002 Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigation.

DCP (crime) Chaitanya Mandlik said that as part of the probe, the Crime Branch will collect the documents that the trio provided to the Commission of Inquiry, the SIT, and the courts about the riots in Gujarat in 2002.

Pertinently, a team of Gujarat’s Anti Terrorism Squad had taken the so-called activist Teesta Setalvad into custody from her home in the Juhu area in Mumbai at around 3 pm on June 25, 2022. On the same day, the Gujarat ATS also arrested retired DGP RB Sreekumar and had sent both to police remand till July 1. The crime branch had informed that it is in the process of acquiring a transfer warrant for arresting former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt.

A day after the Supreme Court said that false allegations of a ‘larger conspiracy’ were made in the Gujarat riots case, Gujarat police filed a case against former IPS officers Sanjiv Bhatt and RB Sreekumar, and activist Teesta Setalvad.

The crime branch of Ahmedabad police has booked the three under sections 468 (Forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (using forged document or record as genuine), 194 (Giving or fabricating false evidence with intent to procure conviction of capital offence), 211 (False charge of offence made with intent to injure), 218 (Public servant framing incorrect record), and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the India Penal Code.

In the FIR, it has been said that the accused had tried to create sensation by making false claims about the Gujarat riots.

SC gives clean chit to PM Modi, Amit Shah and others in the 2002 Gujarat riots case

Friday, June 24, saw the Supreme Court reject claims of a larger conspiracy into the Gujarat riots by PM Narendra Modi and other top Gujarat officials. These allegations were levelled by Zakia Jafri, the wife of deceased former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri. At that time, Modi was Gujarat’s chief minister.

While delivering its verdict, the apex court said that the “appeal is devoid of merits”. A bench headed by Justice A M Khanwilkar refused to order a probe into allegations of a “larger conspiracy” behind the Gujarat riots.

The Supreme Court said in its judgment that Teesta Setalvad, a co-petitioner in the case, exploited the emotions of Zakia Jafri. The court denied Zakia Jafri’s request to reconsider the Special Investigation Team’s decision to exonerate Modi in the riots case.

Delhi: Hindu group protests outside Pakistan High Commission over decapitation of a newborn Hindu child in Sindh

A Hindu group protested outside the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi over the horrifying incident of a decapitated head being left inside the womb of a Hindu woman in Pakistan’s Sindh province. The Jai Sri Ram Sena (JSRS) marched to the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi to voice their objection and pass over a memorandum to the mission personnel requesting action against the incident’s perpetrators.

OpIndia contacted Yash Rajveer, the General Secretary of the JSRS, to learn more about the protest. According to Yash, the Ramdoots of the JSRF were well prepared to visit the Pakistan High Commission, therefore a large police force was deployed in the area.

Yash stated that when they approached the High Commission, they were contacted by police officials from the Chanakyapuri Police Station and requested to visit the station. Following that, they all went to the station and were detained for almost 8 hours. Detainees chanted Hanuman Chalisa collectively in the Chanakyapuri police station to oppose their arrest.

The Pakistani embassy permitted two persons to meet with the Pakistani embassy’s top officials in the evening. Following that, JSRS National President Saurabh Jain and General Secretary Yash met with an official and presented him with a memorandum requesting action against the perpetrators of the crime in Pakistan.

The memorandum by JSRS reads, “On 21st June 2022, a Newborn baby was beheaded and the head was left inside a 32-year-old Hindu woman’s Womb from Bheel community. Jeopardising her life by govt hospital staff in Sindh province, and there has been no action taken by the authorities so far. We demand action over such shameful and life-threatening acts. There are many more incidents which are committed in different areas of Pakistan and no criminal Justice system is set to motion.”

The memorandum demanded compensation for the victim who lost her child and strict action against all involved. The JSRS also demanded that the increasing assaults on minorities in Pakistan and forced religious conversions be halted.

On Sunday, June 19, the staff of a government-run Rural Health Centre (RHC) in Pakistan’s Sindh province reportedly amputated a newborn baby’s head and left the severed head in the mother’s womb, putting the woman’s life in danger. The victim has been identified as a 32-year-old Hindu lady from the Bheel community. She was brought to a nearby hospital in Mithi, but no medical facilities were provided to treat her.

Sikh man shot dead ‘execution-style’ in a New York neighbourhood, the area had previously seen hate crimes against Sikhs in April

On June 25, a 31-year-old Sikh man was shot dead in New York in the South Ozone Park area. According to media reports, the deceased identified as Satnam Singh was shot ‘execution-style’ while sitting in a jeep near his home on Saturday afternoon. Singh was rushed to the hospital where doctors declared him dead.

The New York police informed that the incident happened near the South Ozone Park neighbourhood, next to Richmond Hill where three other Sikh men, in two separate incidents, had been attacked in the month of April.

This incident is the fourth such incident of crimes against Sikhs that took place around New York’s Richmond Hill area, in the last three months. Both Richmond Hill and South Ozone Park have large numbers of people of Indian origin.

As per media reports, there was a discrepancy between the police and eyewitness accounts of Satnam Singh’s killing. According to the New York police, the shooter came on foot and shot Singh as he sat in the jeep, but a neighbour said the assailant had fired from a car. The neighbour confirmed that her home security camera had captured the incident.

According to AM New York Metro, the police had made no arrests until Sunday morning. It said that the police were unaware of the motive behind the unprovoked attack. The media quoted police sources as saying that Satnam Singh had borrowed the jeep from a friend and authorities are determining if he was the shooter’s intended target or had been accidentally killed by someone who actually intended to target the owner of the car.

Three Sikh men attacked in New York in April

On April 13, OpIndia reported how unidentified men attacked and robbed two Sikhs in the Richmond Hill neighbourhood of Queens in New York. This incident had come a week after a 75-year-old Indian Sikh was attacked while he was on his way to Gurudwara Sahib in Queens, New York to offer his obeisance. The victim, identified as Nirmal Singh, suffered a broken nose and bruising to his face. The New York police said that the attack that took place on 95th Avenue and Lefferts Boulevard at around 6:45 am was unprovoked since no words were exchanged prior to the assault.

Following the incident, the South Asian community in New York were outraged. Many had come forward to condemn the act and express their concern for the safety of the Indian diaspora in the area.

Twitter account of pro-Khalistan author withheld in India, had previously blamed Hindus for attack against Sikhs in Afghanistan by Islamists

The Twitter account of Kashmir-based pro-Khalistan author Amaan Bali has been withheld in India on the instructions of the Government of India. Twitter now displays a notice on his profile that says that his account has been withheld in India following a legal demand.

Twitter account withheld notice

Amaan Bali had extended support to the Farmer’s Protest that turned violent on several occasions and had also peddled pro-Khalistan propaganda. Bali had previously accused the ‘Sanghi Ecosystem’ of taking advantage of the abduction of two Sikh girls by Islamists. He was also seen justifying the lynching of a man within the premises of the Golden Temple over an alleged act of sacrilege. In fact, in a tweet, Bali had confessed to being a Khalistani but later tried to portray it as a virtue of sorts. In October last year, he had also tried to downplay the killing of a Kashmiri Hindu teacher by Islamic extremists.

Recently, after Gurudwara Karte Parwan was attacked by terrorists belonging to the ISIS Khurasan, he blamed Hindus for the attack in Afghanistan by Islamists. He had somehow also blamed Nupur Sharma for ISIS attacking the Gurudwara in Afghanistan.

This is not the first account that has been withheld in India. Earlier, on June 22, the Twitter handle of fake news peddler and Islamic terror apologist CJ Werleman was withheld in India. If someone from India tried to open his account, a message that read “@cjwerleman’s account has been withheld in India in response to a legal demand” appeared on the screen. As per this message, his account has been banned in India following a request from either a court or a competent authority in the government.

Rana Ayyub’s tweet being withheld in India

In what seems like concerted action against anti-India rhetoric by the government of India, on June 26, Twitter withheld a tweet by financial fraud-accused Washington Post columnist Rana Ayyub in response to legal demand by the Government of India. Notably, in the tweet that has been withheld, Ayyub had cast aspersions on the judiciary in connection to the disputed structures called mosques.

After the survey was allowed by the court, the judge who had passed the order had been given additional security after they received death threats. The threats came after the videography of survey found Shivling in the wuzukhana of the ‘mosque’ where people who offer namaz at masjids would wash their dirty hands and legs before offering prayer.

In the tweet that has not been withheld by Twitter, Ayyub had said, “Setting the stage for demolition of yet another mosque in India, sanctioned by the judiciary, endorsed by the regime, abetted by the silence of its liberals and enabled by the complicity of the citizenry. Yet another day of humiliating the Muslim minority. Democracy anyone?”

Tweet of Rana Ayyub withheld in India

The tweet was published on April 9, 2021. Ayyub was quoting a tweet by Bar & Bench where it was reported that the court had allowed an ASI survey of the disputed structure known as Gyanvapi ‘mosque’ adjacent to Kashi Vishwanath Mandir.

25 years of Harry Potter: Author JK Rowling thanks the readers on the occasion for making the books a success, here is what she said

As the iconic children’s fiction series Harry Potter completes 25 years since the first book’s release, author JK Rowling reminisces about the time when the first book in the series got published in 1997. Rowling has taken to Twitter to thank her readers while celebrating 25 years of the book launch at a bookstore in Edinburgh on Sunday.

The first book in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone was published by Bloomsbury on June 26, 1997. “25 years ago today, I saw Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in a bookstore (Waterstones, Prince’s Street, Edinburgh) for the very first time. It was one of the best moments of my life,” Rowling wrote on Twitter.

“Had absolutely no idea what was coming as I stood dumbstruck in that book shop, staring at my name on the spine of a published novel,” Rowling said while thanking her publisher, Bloomsbury. “Thank you to every single reader who boarded the Hogwarts Express in 1997 and stuck with Harry until the very end. What a journey it was…”, J K Rowling recollects.

In a BBC interview a few years ago, Rowling talked about her struggles as a first-time author to crack the publishing industry. Rowling talked about being completely broke when she completed her first Harry Potter book (Philosopher’s stone) in June 1995. Rowling did not have enough money to print multiple photocopies of her manuscript, and hence typed them herself on her typewriter. After a defeating rejection from 12 publishers, Barry Cunningham, who ran the children’s literature department at Bloomsbury picked it up.

‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ was published with an initial print run of 500 copies. To manage her finances, The Scottish Arts Council rewarded Rowling with a fellowship while she was writing the sequel Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Over the years, Rowling has authored seven fantasy novels in the Harry Potter series, with a combined sale of well over 500 Million copies, making them the best-selling book series in history.

The books have given rise to two multi-billion movie franchises as well, the Harry Potter franchise based on the 7 books, and its spinoff, the Fantastic Beasts franchise.

Ahead of Bramhastra’s release, Alia Bhatt posts a picture of ‘baby coming soon’ amid pregnancy rumours

Reports of Bollywood Actress Alia Bhatt being pregnant have surfaced in the news cycle. In a picture posted by the actress on Instagram, she could be seen in a hospital with her husband actor Ranbir Kapoor by her side. It seems to be image of sonography, a procedure carried out during pregnancy with the caption ‘Our baby… coming soon’.

However, according to some fans, this could be a publicity gimmick, to promote the couple’s first film together ‘Bramhastra’ releasing on September 9 this year.

According to Entertainment News agency Pinkvilla, the 29-year-old actress is reportedly pregnant after she tied the knot with Ranbir Kapoor on April 14 in Mumbai. Nearly two and a half months later, the reports of the Bollywood diva being pregnant have come to the fore. In the pictures that have surfaced, the actress is all smiling while she looks at the monitor, in what looks like a preliminary sonography test. Soon congratulations started pouring in for the newly-wed couple.

The couple looks forward to their joint next flick directed by Ayan Mukherjee, which also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna and Mouni Roy.

‘Ecosystem’ gets into first gear to cry ‘democracy in danger’ over arrest of Teesta Setalvad by ATS, characterises system as dictatorial

Following the arrest of self-proclaimed activist Teesta Setalvad by Gujarat ATS, the entire ecosystem, which was previously busy incriminating the then-chief minister Narendra Modi in the Gujarat riots in 2002, has sprung back into action. They have now taken a stand to protest the authorities’ decision and characterize the government as dictatorial.

The Mumbai Press Club took to Twitter to condemn the move by the authorities and ask to free Teesta Setalvad. They wrote, “Mumbai Press Club expresses shock and dismay at the arrest of journalist and human rights activist Teesta Setalvad by the Gujarat Police on Saturday 25th June. This followed the dismissal by the Supreme Court on Friday, 24th June, of a petition in which Setalvad is a co-petitioner who appealed against a lower court’s order in connection with the 2002 Gujarat riots case.”

They further said, “It is unacceptable that a person who has been fighting for civil justice should be accused of fabricating evidence and misleading the Special Investigation Team.”

Somehow, Teesta Setalvad metamorphosed into a ‘journalist’ just because she runs one propaganda outlet called ‘Sabrang’ which has been used to spread anti-Modi propaganda over the years.

Notable pro-Congress activist Shabnam Hashmi also took to Twitter and shared a poster seeking support from the public to protest in Delhi against the arrest of Teesta Setalvad. Hashmi has been caught several times spreading fake news and lies.

The tweet by Shabnam Hashmi.

Hashmi, a pro-Congress ‘activist’ is sister of Safdar Hashmi, a communist activist who was killed by Congress leaders while performing a play.

Communist leader Kavita Krishnan, who has compared the Taliban to Hindutva, also took to Twitter pouring her outrage after the arrest of Teesta Setalvad. She wrote, “Bad enough that the Supreme Court rejected Zakia Jafri’s petition – but outrageous that it criminalised @TeestaSetalvad & others who supported her quest for justice for Gujarat 2002 violence! Chronology is clear – SC has enabled Gujarat ATS & Modi-Shah’s vindictive actions.”

The tweet by Kavita Krishnan.

Financial fraud accused Rana Ayyub also jumped in to support her partner. She retweeted a tweet by another member of their Karuna Nundy, who accused the Supreme Court of undermining India’s constitution after Teesta Setalvad was arrested. It is worth noting that the Supreme Court of India dismissed Rana Ayyub’s description in ‘Gujarat Files,’ rubbishing the book as being based on surmises, conjectures, and suppositions.

The retweet by Rana Ayyub.

Amnesty India also weighed in to defend Teesta Setalvad. They characterised the action as a deliberate retaliation against anyone who dared to call their human rights record into question.

The tweet by Amnesty India.

It should be noted that all of this is happening in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s rejection of a petition in which the Supreme Court of India upheld the Special Investigation Team’s (SIT) clean chit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the 2002 Gujarat Riots when he was the state’s chief minister. The Supreme Court stated in its decision that Zakia Jafri’s petition was without foundation and had been done to keep the pot boiling.

On June 25, 2022, a squad from Gujarat’s Anti-Terrorism Squad apprehended so-called activist Teesta Setalvad. She was detained from her residence in Mumbai’s Juhu locality at about 3 PM and brought to Ahmedabad via road.

The court even said that there is a need for further investigation into Teesta Setalvad as she was using Zakia Jafri’s feelings in the case for her own benefit. The court noted, “It is submitted that Ms Teesta Setalvad, for reasons best known to her and out of vengeance, was interested in continuing with her tirade and persecution on the basis of unsubstantiated allegations in the complaint in the name of the quest for justice with real purpose to keep the pot boiling and sensationalise and politicise the crime.”

Fireworks expected as Sr advocate Harish Salve takes on Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi in Maharashtra political crisis

Days after Deputy Speaker Narhari Zirwal issued disqualification notices to 16 rebel Shiv Sena MLAs, Eknath Shinde had moved the Supreme Court to seek a stay on the notices.

The Shinde camp will be represented in the apex court on Monday (June 27) by eminent lawyer, Harish Salve.

On the other hand, the Uddhav Thackeray faction of the Sena will be represented in the Court by Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi.

“Learnt that two writs filed today by #Shinde group listed tomorrow in SC for hearing in vacation bench! Happy to appear for #ShivSena headed by #Uddhavji and its office bearers,” he had informed in a tweet.

Until a few years ago, Singhvi, like many Congress leaders, was a vocal proponent of the Sema. In July 2014, he tweeted, “Shiv Sena is not Shiv Sena / It is Shameless Sena.” The Congress leader has now deleted the contentious tweet from his timeline.

Screengrab of the deleted tweet by Abhishek Manu Singhvi

Reportedly, the matter will be heard by a vacation bench of Justices Surya Kant and J B Pardiwala.

The Courtroom is expected to be heated with, Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Harish Salve facing each other. The two great legal minds had earlier come face to face during the Rajasthan political crisis.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari had requested the deployment of additional central security forces to maintain the law and order in the State. The development came at the backdrop of provocative remarks by the Uddhav Thackeray camp.

“Offices and homes of some of the MLAs have been vandalised with the police being a mute spectator,” he had informed in a letter to Union home secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla. The Centre had also provided Y+ security cover to the rebel Shiv Sena MLAs.
