Arcelor Mittal Nippon Steel’s Rs 1 lakh crore steel unit approved in Odisha’s Kendrapada

The Naveen Patnaik government on Friday approved ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India’s (AM/NS India) proposal to set up a 24 MTPA integrated steel plant at Mahakalapada block in Kendrapada district at an investment of Rs 1 lakh crore.

High-Level Clearance Authority of the Govt of Odisha, under the leadership of CM Naveen Patnaik, gave its green signal to the mega project which is expected to create employment opportunities for 16,000 persons and indirect employment opportunities through ancillary and downstream industries and services.

The Odisha government said Arcelor Mitta Nippon Steel’s approved project of setting up a 24 MTPA integrated Steel plant in Odisha’s Kendrapara will be the largest project in the manufacturing sector in the country.

Besides, the plant is also expected to churn out 18.75 MT of cement annually, making it one of the biggest cement manufacturing facilities in the country and thereby, providing a boost to the infrastructure development in the region.

In addition to the Steel plant, the company will also be developing a downstream industry park to assist the MSMEs and helo import substitution. AMNS’ plant is expected to attract a plethora of auxiliary companies in the region to support the country’s biggest steel manufacturing unit, the Odisha government said.

“The infrastructure to be developed for the Kendrapada projects facility will give a boost to the logistics and overall development of the region. This modern, green and environment-friendly steel making facility will put the district and Odisha on the world steel map. A number of international equipment manufacturers will be stakeholders in this project and catalyse more employment opportunities for the state,” a statement released by the Odisha government said.

As per reports, the project will be initiated in a phased manner and completed in 7 years. The state government agencies will provide clearances for logistic infrastructure, power and water utilities in a time-bound manner monitored by a ‘High Power Committee’ chaired by the Chief Secretary.

Earlier in March 2021, the Odisha government inked the deal for setting up the integrated steel complex in the Mahakalapada area of Kendrapara district with the steelmaker in the presence of the Chief Minister and executive chairman of AM/NS LN Mittal at Lokseva Bhavan.

It is also worth noting that Arcelor Mittal Nippon Steel commenced its operations at the Ghoraburhani-Sagasahi iron ore mine in Odisha in September.

Following Karnataka Congress leader KR Ramesh Kumar, Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu joined the foul mouth brigade of the Congress.

Sidhu who has always hogged the limelight for wrong reasons lost his cool and used abusive language at a press conference at the Punjab Congress Bhawan on Friday (December 17). At least one female journalist was present at his press conference.

Sidhu was addressing a press conference regarding the launch of the Urban Employment Guarantee Mission (UEGM) promising urban labour the right to employment if Congress retains power in Punjab.

Sidhu lost his cool when a media person asked how different was UEGM from a similar programme started by the Centre. “Our scheme is not that. Ours is an urban guarantee. Has anyone given it till now? (he uttered expletive). It is a different thing altogether. It is a state government thing. What does the Punjab government have to do with it?” 

Netizens slammed Sidhu for using a Hindi swear word and said that it has become part of the Congress to welcome people using abusive language and rejects true patriots.

Neither Sidhu nor Congress has sought an apology for using foul language, BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa said that there was nothing new in it.

Sirsa said that the arrogance of the dynasty has seeped into the roots of the Congress who can “laugh at rape and say that you enjoy it. Their mindset and arrogance are reflected in this.” Sirsa said that a person like Sidhu has become so arrogant that he is hurling abuses while speaking to the media. He also reminded how the Congress party had equated 1984 Sikh massacre that when a big tree falls, the earth shakes.

Earlier, in November 2018, Sidhu had made an obscene remark against the woman Mayor of Indore, Malini Lakshmansingh Gaur.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (December 17) said that the developments in Kashi can be taken as the roadmap for the development of the rest of the country. Modi said this during his address at the All India Mayors’ Conference held in Kashi (also called Varanasi) which was attended by 120 mayors from several states. Modi participated in the conference through video conferencing.

The conference based on the ‘New Urban India’ theme is organized at the Deen Dayal Upadhyay-Business Facilitation Center (DDUTFC) at Bada Lalpur. Mayors’ conference marks the beginning of a month-long celebration in Varanasi following the inauguration of the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor. 

Varanasi was among the oldest city in the world which is now turning into a modern city, Modi said that the mayors’ conference in Kashi would play an important role in the growth of cities in India.

“I believe that all the mayors present here have left no stones unturned for the bright future and development of their cities. I was in Kashi recently and I had said that the development of Kashi can be the roadmap for the development of the rest of the country,” Modi said.

Modi said that most of the cities in India are traditional cities that developed in a traditional way. He outlined the need for careful planning to develop cities without destroying their old beauty.

He said that the old character of cities must be preserved while adapting to new things. He referred to the example of Varanasi, his home constituency that has not cast aside its ancient character despite being renovated on a modern line.

Modi discouraged the idea of demolition or reconstruction of the heritage buildings during the town planning. “Rather we need to rejuvenate them,” Modi asked mayors.

Modi floated the idea that people should celebrate the foundation day of their city so that they know its history, antiquity, and speciality. “We can learn from such places about how local skills and products can be the identity of that city and the cities must be a hub of a vibrant economy,” he said.

Modi urged mayors to pay special attention to the cleanliness of their cities and advised them to organize beauty competitions between the wards.

The most well-known incident of the same is the Ram Mandir case, as Swamy claims that Supreme Court had started daily hearing of the case only after his intervention. But the fact is that, the Supreme Court had rejected his intervention plea in the historic case. While the court had retained his plea on enforcement of his fundamental right to worship at the Ram temple, the court had rejected his application for urgent hearing of the same.

The apex court ruling handing over the Ram Janmabhoomi site to Hindus was delivered in the original title suit where Swamy was not a party, as plea to intervene in the case was rejected by the court.

Just three days ago, Subramanian Swamy had taken credit for the governments of Chandrashekhar and PV Narasimha Rao, and BJP’s win in 2014. He said that historic win of BJP in 2014 under the leadership of Narendra Modi was because of his contributions towards Ram Setu, 2G spectrum case and other cases fought by him.

Swamy has taken credit similarly for many other court orders and government decisions, even in cases where his role is not clearly known. And now, the same person is warning against someone else taking claim for BJP’s victory in the upcoming UP polls.

Former Democratic leader of Myanmar Aung Suu Kyi has appeared before a court dressed like a prisoner wearing a white top and a brown coloured wraparound called longyi which is the uniform for a prisoner in the country, according to reports.

Aung Suu Kyi who was found guilty by a Myanmar court for violation of COVID protocols is currently facing a two-year prison term and has been locked up in an undisclosed location by the authorities. She also faces multiple charges against her which might keep her imprisoned for life.

Daughter of Myanmar’s independence hero, General Aung San, Aung Suu Kyi had fought to usher democracy in Myanmar which propelled her to achieve international recognition as a woman who led the path of peaceful resistance against all odds. During the period of her struggle which was aimed at leading Myanmar towards democracy, she was detained for over a decade between 1989 and 2010. Later she led her party National League for Democracy (NLD) to a landslide victory in 2015 in Myanmar’s first publicly contested election in 25 years.

Aung Suu Kyi known as “the Lady” is massively popular among the Buddhists majority in Myanmar. A 2020 survey conducted by the People’s Alliance for Credible Elections revealed that 79% of people had trust in her which had only increased from the previous 70%.

Notably, Aung Suu Kyi who had assumed the title of state counsellor was brought down by the military after her party emerged victorious again in the 2020 elections receiving even more votes than in 2015. The military in its coup orchestrated a crackdown in which several political leaders including Aung Suu Kyi were arrested.

Earlier Indian Foreign Ministry had issued a statement in which spokesman Arindam Bagchi said, “We are disturbed at the recent verdicts. As a neighbouring democracy, India has been consistently supportive of the democratic transition in Myanmar”.

A day after the central government approved a proposal to raise the legal age of marriage of women from 18 years to 21 years, Samajwadi Party leader Shafiqur Rahman Barq came up with a bizarre remark saying that the decision to raise the marriageable age of girls to 21 years would give the girl’s an excuse to do ‘awargi’ (to indulge in reckless, immoral behaviour).

“I don’t think this is the right step. Increasing the minimum marriageable age of women will deteriorate the situation. 18 years was perfect and the age bar was existent for a long time. Now, it will provide more scope for recklessness (awargi)”, Shafiqur Rahman Barq was heard as saying.

Later, in an interview with ANI, he claimed, “India a poor country and everybody wants to marry off their daughter at an early age. If it comes to education the girl continues her education after marriage also…I will not support this Bill in Parliament,” said the SP leader.

Interestingly, Shafiqur Rahman Barq is not the only Samajwadi Party leader who had raised objections to the central government’s decision to raise the legal age of marriage of women. In fact, Samajwadi Party MP ST Hasan went a step ahead and opined that girls should be married when they attain the age of fertility, even if it is at the tender age of sixteen.

“Girls should be married when they attain the age of fertility. There is nothing wrong if a mature girl is married at 16. If she can vote at age of 18, why can’t she marry?” said the SP MP ST Hasan.

IUML dubs the move as an attempt to bring about Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the country

The decision did not go down well with the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) also. On Friday (December 17), the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) submitted an adjournment notice in the parliament after the Union Cabinet gave a nod to increasing the minimum marriageable age of women from 18 years to 21 years.

According to reports, IUML had dubbed the move as an attempt to bring about Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the country. The Islamist party also claimed that it would affect society in the future. The Indian Union Muslim League leaders also stated that the move to increase women’s legal marriageable age to 21 years was against the Muslim personal law.

Union Cabinet raises minimum marriageable age of women, personal laws to be amdended

On December 15, the Union Cabinet approved a proposal to raise the legal age of marriage of women from 18 years to 21 years. During the Independence Day address in August 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the same and said the Government was planning to amend the law for the same. He again pointed out the same in an address to the people of the nation in October 2020 and said the government would soon take a decision over it. Once the law is amended, the legal marriageable age for both men and women would become the same, i.e. 21 years.

Following the announcement of the decision, there was speculation that the decision would just affect Hindus because it was unclear whether personal laws would be changed. It was unclear if any change to Muslim Personal Law would be made to amend the minimum age of marriage for women, which is currently 15 years.

The speculation was that the Muslim personal law would give the community the right to marry their girls at 15, and Hindus would follow the law, thereby affecting the fertility rate and screwing the demography further.

OpIndia reached out to sources in the know to get clarity on the issue. Sources have clarified that all personal laws, including Sharia and Christian laws, would also be amended to increase the marital age of women to 21.

“Repeat a lie often enough and it becomes the truth”, a law of propaganda often attributed to the Nazi Joseph Goebbels seems to be the mantra adopted by journalists and propagandists sympathetic to the Congress party of late. Blatant lies and misinformation maligning the Centre are peddled ad nauseam to portray them in a bad light while painting Congress and its leaders as victims of state excesses.

YouTuber Abhisar Sharma, who recently had a delightful meltdown after PM Modi inaugurated the hallowed Kashi Vishwanath Corridor earlier this week, is one such individual who has taken it upon himself to propagate lies in the hopeless pursuit of them becoming truth. In his recent video, Sharma alleged that Indira Gandhi, who was the Prime Minister of the country when Pakistan was dismembered into two countries, was likened to Goddess Durga by BJP stalwart Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the aftermath of the 1971 war.

It is noteworthy to mention that allegations made by Abhisar Sharma, in his YouTube video, jibed perfectly well with the Congress party’s propaganda, where they blamed the BJP for ignoring Indira Gandhi’s contribution in hacking off Pakistan into two separate countries in the 1971 war. Sharma alleged that the BJP snubbed Indira Gandhi, a leader who was hailed by the former Indian PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee refutes equating Indira Gandhi with Goddess Durga

As it turns out, Sharma’s assertion that Vajpayee compared Indira Gandhi to Goddess Durga in the wake of the 1971 war transpired to be what the tainted journalist has come to be associated with lately: misinformation. Vajpayee had not equated Indira Gandhi with Goddess Durga, something which he had himself clarified. Yet, the claims of him glorifying Ms Gandhi and elevating her to the status of Goddess Durga keep doing the rounds, courtesy propaganda peddlers.

In his interview with Rajat Sharma on Aap Ki Adalat, Vajpayee said he had never referred to Indira Gandhi as ‘Durga’ and how a hitjob was done against him by the media bent on aggrandising the former prime minister’s role in dismembering Pakistan.

When host Rajat Sharma asked Vajpayee whether he had indeed referred to Indira Gandhi as ‘Durga’, Vajpayee said that he never called her ‘Durga’ and it was a figment of imagination conjured up by the media.

“I kept saying that I have never called her Durga. They kept insisting that I have. Then there was a lot of investigation carried out on this. Shri Pupul Jayakar was writing a book on Indira Gandhi’s life and she came to me to ask me if I had said this. I said no, I never did. Then she scanned all the books in all the libraries, and she never found any evidence to state that I had actually called her Durga. But this Durga reference never left my back,” Vajpayee told Sharma on being asked if he had called Ms Gandhi ‘Durga’.

It is worth noting that Abhisar Sharma’s misinformation and lies attributed to Atal Bihari Vajpayee comes on the heels of successive meltdowns he had had following PM Modi’s inauguration of the much-vaunted Kashi Vishwanath Corridor on Monday this week.

In his show ‘Suniye Sarkar’ hosted on the Youtube channel of HW News, Sharma lamented the supposed ‘politicisation’ of a religious event. He claimed that the Kashi Vishwanath corridor was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, even before its completion, to send out a political message to his voters prior to the 2022 Uttar Pradesh elections.

He then attempted to dissect the video wherein PM Modi was seen offering his prayers at Kal Bhairav temple. “Look at this footage carefully. Why are there cameras in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple? There is not one but multiple cameras… And who is visible in the footage? Not Kal Bhairav sahab but PM Modi… Had this been a politician from another party, BJP and its PR agency would have declared him anti-religion,” Sharma said.

Within hours, Sharma had another meltdown, this time on why the media focuses on PM Modi and ignores Akhilesh Yadav. Though it is not clear how and why should the media focus more on a former CM of a state and not on the current Prime Minister of the country, Sharma certainly thinks that Akhilesh Yadav deserves more coverage than the Prime Minister.

Sharma, in his video, bemoaned that Akhilesh Yadav deserved more media coverage than the Prime Minister. As per Sharma, Akhilesh Yadav had recently had a rally in Jaunpur where a large number of people turned up. He also insisted that the public was gathered purely out of love for Yadav and not because of money.

Nidhi Razdan issues statement after NYT article over how she was scammed, blames Harvard University

Former NDTV anchor Nidhi Razdan has shared a long statement on the NDTV website regarding her ‘ordeal’ when she thought she has been hired as a professor at Harvard to teach journalism. On December 16, New York Times had shared a long ‘investigative’ article detailing how she fell for the elaborate scam and went around for a year believing that she is a Harvard professor.

In her blog post for NDTV, Nidhi has written that she was in constant contact with the so-called fraudsters for almost a year over emails and letters. She had even signed contracts and the fraudsters had sent documents to her employers with links for references. Earlier she had stated that she had even had a 90-minute long ‘interview’ with the people who claimed to be from Harvard.

She has thanked the New York Times for reaching out to her and engaging a team of journalists, along with experts from Stanford University and the Univerisity of Toronto to find how she was scammed and by whom. She has mentioned that Jiten Jain, a cybersecurity expert was also engaged to look into her laptop and other devices.

Notably, all these experts got together to ‘investigate’ how Nidhi was scammed and after one year, they concluded that they have no idea how she was scammed, and exactly by whom. All they could say was that Nidhi was not the only one targeted. Several other women, including BJP leader Nighat Abbas were targeted by the same group of people too. However, sadly, Nidhi was the only one who actually fell for it and quit her job.

Nidhi blames Harvard

In the blog, Nidhi has stated that Harvard University has refused to give a comment to the NYT on its investigation. Adding that Harvard had not done anything even after BJP leader Nighat Abbas sent emails and all details of how some people are impersonating the University and contacting people on their behalf, Nidhi criticised the University for not doing enough to prevent fraud being committed in their name.

She also stated that even though she had tagged the University in her tweets where she had said she is quitting NDTV to join the prestigious university as a professor of journalism, the University had not reacted.

The NYT article had mentioned that security expert Jiten Jain, who did a forensic analysis of the laptop and devices of Nidhi Razdan, said that a suspicious file he uncovered on Ms Razdan’s computer contained an IP address that had once been linked to a hacking group believed to be associated with Pakistani intelligence.

Speculations are rife that prominent Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Gurnam Singh Chaduni is likely to announce his political party in Chandigarh on Saturday, December 18. Gurnam Singh Chaduni’s party will be the first political party to emerge from the farmers’ year-long protest against the three farm legislation. The decision comes as Punjab gears up for the State Legislative Assembly elections slated to be held in February or March 2022.

On November 26, the BKU leader, who had been at the vanguard of instigating the protesting ‘farmers’ against the farm laws, had offered to place a ‘Punjab model’ in front of the country so that the rest of the states can take ‘motivation’.

“I am not contesting Punjab polls but gathering people to contest and present a model (of governance). We will form our own party for polls… If our govt comes in Punjab, entire country in 2024 (national) polls will look up to the Punjab model”, Gurnam Chaduni was quoted as saying by ANI when he was addressing a convention, Save the Country, Farmer, Mazdoor, a constitution organized by the Save Constitution Morcha and Bharatiya Kisan Union in Haryana’s Ambala city.

It may be recalled how in the last one year, when the so-called farmers were agitating against the farm laws, there have been multiple occasions when the BKU leader had indulged in fear-mongering, instigating and repeating the same trope that the farm leaders have been trotting out ad nauseam—farm laws were meant to benefit the “corporate sector”. Chaduni had continued sowing seeds of mistrust and apprehensions among unwitting farmers, alleging that the Farm Bills would render the farmers landless and they would no longer be the owner of their own land.

In yet another blatant lie, Chaduni has said that the implementation of the farm laws would result in food price inflation. The BKU leader had claimed that if the Bills are implemented, food prices will soar on the same line as the fuel prices. 

In fact, apart from misleading the ‘farmers’ against the central govt’s farm laws, Chudni was on multiple occasions caught instigating them against the police and state machinery. Chaduni had threatened to hold Haryana MPs and MLAs hostage if the ruling BJP government in the State failed to procure paddy from the farmers by October 1.

Besides, on February 22, Chaduni had said: “I’m saying this even today. Dare to touch us. I’m seriously saying this. If anyone of you gets notice, burn it. Burn it. Let me know if the Delhi police enter our village. Announce that no police, whether Delhi or Punjab, must not enter our villages.” The inflammatory speech was aimed to foment unrest and anarchy in the country. 

In addition, farmer leader Gurnam Chaduni was also accused of teaming up with political parties like Congress and getting into a deal worth Rs 10 crore to topple the Khattar government in Haryana in return for a Congress ticket for elections. Chaduni, however, had refuted the allegations.

Gay man asks activist Ankit Bhuptani for recommendation letter to ‘take refuge in Canada’, gets shut down for being a Khalistani

A gay man has asked the Mumbai based gay right activist Ankit Bhuptani for a recommendation letter in order to seek asylum in Canada. The person had messaged Bhuptani on social media platform Instagram, enquiring if Bhuptani ran an LGBTQ support organisation and requested a letter of support to facilitate shifting to Canada.

In his message, the man with the Instagram id ‘navdeep.singhbrar’ carefully avoided revealing his original identity and only mentioned himself as a gay male from India who wanted asylum in Canada.

The message started with, “hey I am reaching out to you guys to seek some support if you guys run LGBTQIA++ support organization or if you are able to help me” and then the man said that he identified himself as a gay male from India who sought asylum in Canada because of ‘traumatic experiences’ in India. The text read, “I know that you guys personally don’t know me. I am gay male from India and I am seeking asylum in Canada because of my traumatic experiences as gay male in India if you guys can write a support letter for me that would be really helpful, I am comfortable sharing my story with you guys if that helps to build trust. I can also share proofs. As you guys can see in my profile, I am out the closet about my sexuality and have always supported queers folks”.

However, it was later found out that the man was also a Khalistani separatist who called himself a Khalistani National.

Bhuptani supposedly had checked the Instagram profile of navdeep.singhbrar and posted the picture mentioned above which revealed that the gay male was also a Khalistan supporter. Here is another look at the picture posted on ‘navdeep.singhbrar’ instagram profile.

Ankit Bhuptani then politely declined the request of the Khalistani and stated that a letter recommendation from him will be of no value as the gay male identified himself as a Khalistani.

Notably, Ankit Bhuptani is a public speaker and a Human Rights advocate. Bhupani is also a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) professional with years of experience in diversity and inclusion space.
