Samsung heir fined SKW 70 million for drug abuse, had earlier served 20 months in prison for fraud

0

On Tuesday (October 26), Samsung Group heir Lee Jae-Yong was convicted of drug abuse between January 2015 and May 2020 by the Seoul Central District Court.

As per reports, he had pleaded guilty to the illegal use of ‘controlled drug’ Propofol. The prosecutors said that Lee Jae-Yong took Propofol for ‘purposes other than medical treatments’ on 41 occasions at a plastic during the 5 year period. He reportedly administered the controlled substance at a plastic surgery clinic in Southern Seoul. Propofol is an anaesthetic medicine, the overdose of which can cause death as seen in the case of Michael Jackson.

Yong’s lawyer, however, argued that he took the drug for the treatment of ‘psychological stress’ owing to his father’s hospitalisation and mounting legal cases. The Seoul Central District Court fined him SKW 70 million (US$60,055) and directed an additional forfeiture of SKW 17 million (US$14580) under the Narcotics Control Act. Reportedly, users and administrators of controlled substances can both be prosecuted in South Korea. The Samsung heir was only fined and jailed since abuse of propofol is rare in the country.

Samsung heir and his run-ins with the law enforcement

The Samsung heir had earlier served a 20-month sentence for his role in bribery and embezzlement, involving the ex-President Park Geun-Hye. He was released in August this year. It was considered as one of the largest financial scams in South Korea. He was also involved in accounting fraud and stock price manipulation. Following his release from jail, Yong and Samsung vowed to invest $206 billion in chips and biopharmaceuticals in South Korea.

‘Very special for me’: Former Pakistan captain Waqar Younis says Rizwan reciting Namaz ‘in front of Hindus’ best part of win against India

Former captain of the Pakistan cricket team Waqar Younis during a talk show on a news channel on Monday said that it was very special for him when Mohammad Rizwan recited the Namaz in front of Hindus during the India versus Pakistan match at the T20 World Cup. Younis has also been the head coach of the team in the past.

Waqar Younis complimented the manner in which the Pakistani openers batted and stayed on the crease until the very end to finish the match. He said that Pakistan has a history of choking in World Cup matches against Pakistan, which led the bookies to believe that India were the favourites to win the match even after scoring 151.

The former Pakistani pacer said, “The manner in which Babar and Rizwan batted, sensible yet aggressive, the strike-rotation, the look on their faces, it was amazing. The best thing, what Rizwan did, Mashalla, he offered the Namaz on the ground surrounded by Hindus, that was really something very very special for me.”

Earlier, Pakistani Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmad had called it a ‘victory for Muslim world’. “I want to congratulate the whole of Pakistan on this resounding victory (against India in T20 Qualifier match). I salute the Pakistan team for decimating its arch-rival in an exemplary display of grit, determination and courage. Pakistan has showcased its righteousness before the Muslim world. This is the only India Vs Pakistan match that I could not attend owing to Ministerial work,” he said.

“The Pakistani team had the emotional support of all Muslims of the world, including Muslims of India. This is the victory of the Muslim world. Pakistan Zindabad. Islam Zindabad,” he concluded.

Before the match, Shoaib Akhtar, who was present at the talk show when Waqar Younis made the comment, had reiterated his belief in the two nation theory after Harbhajan Singh made a ‘we are one’ comment at a talk show.

Is Nawab Malik’s attack against Sameer Wankhede an attempt to extricate his son-in-law from a drugs case? Here’s what we know so far

NCP leader Nawab Malik on Tuesday, October 26, continued his relentless attack against Mumbai NCB’s Zonal Director Sameer Wankhede by releasing a letter he claimed to have received from an unnamed NCB official.

Citing the letter, Malik alleged that Wankhede violated rules in as many as 26 cases. The Maharashtra Minister also accused Wankhede of illegally intercepting the mobile phones of some people through two private people in Mumbai and Thane.

“Here are the contents of the letter received by me from an unnamed NCB official.
As a responsible citizen, I will be forwarding this letter to DG Narcotics requesting him to include this letter in the investigation being conducted on Sameer Wankhede,” Malik tweeted along with attaching a picture of the letter.

The letter claims current Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana instructed Sameer Wankhede and KPS Malhotra to frame Bollywood artists through any means necessary. The letter claims after filing the fake cases, Malhotra and Wankhede extorted crores of rupees and provided Asthana his share as well.

The letter also alleged that Wankhede used a lawyer as a middleman to collect funds and that he has a team of trusted aides that help in planting evidence against his quarry. It says money and jewellery seized during raids is used for purchasing drugs to plant as evidence.

Anyone who refuses to follow Wankhede’s directives, the letter says, is sidelined and replaced by more docile officers. The letter claimed Arbaz Merchant’s friend Abdul had no drugs but the NCB planted it to have him arrested. The letter shared by Malik also cites various instances where people were allegedly framed by the NCB.

Is Nawab Malik spearheading the campaign against Sameer Wankhede to extricate his son-in-law from drugs case?

Malik has been at the forefront of the smear campaign against Sameer Wankhede, continuously questioning his integrity and painting him as a corrupt officer. Interestingly, the letter shared by Malik also says that his son-in-law Sameer Khan was framed in a ‘fake’ drugs case by the NCB, giving an impression that the motive behind leading a spirited campaign against Sameer Wankhede and NCB could perhaps be an attempt to weaken the case against Khan.

The letter says NCB falsely reported 200 Kgs of tobacco as cannabis to file a case against Sameer Khan. It is worth noting that Nawab Malik’s son-in-law Sameer Khan was arrested on January 13 this year by NCB in connection with a drug case and was granted bail on September 27, after eight months in prison.

NCB had arrested Nawab Malik’s son-in-law after it found an online monetary transaction between Khan and one of the accused in a probe into the Bollywood-drug nexus. The transaction took place on Google Pay between Sameer Khan and Karan Sajnani, which the NCB believes was a payment for drug purchase. Accordingly, he was issued summons to appear before the NCB on Wednesday. After detailed questioning, the NCB had decided to put him under arrest.

Days after Khan secured bail, the NCB arrested Khan and others in a separate case linked to the cruise ship off the Mumbai coast. Since then, Malik has stepped up his attack against the narcotics agency and Wankhede, raising doubts over his motivations to pressurise the central agency and one of its officers by accusing them of being involved in corruption and irregularities.

Malik had launched a scathing attack against Sameer Wankhede, accusing him of being a fraud. Earlier yesterday, Malik tweeted a picture of a document, allegedly related to Wankhede’s birth and claimed, “the forgery began from here”.

Malik had also alleged that Wankhede had extorted money from Bollywood stars earlier during the pandemic, a claim that is staunchly refuted by the embattled officer. Wankhede has alleged that his dead mother and other relatives are being targeted for scrupulously doing his duty.

Pakistani journalist Aroosa Alam calls Punjab HM, Navjot Singh Sidhu and his wife a ‘pack of hyenas’, says won’t come back to India

Pakistani journalist Aroosa Alam, who has been dragged in the political feud between the former Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh and the Congress party, has called Punjab Home Minister Sukhjinder Randhawa, PPCC chief Navjot Singh Sidhu and his wife (Navjot Kaur Sidhu) a “pack of hyenas” and vowed not to ever visit India.

Talking to The Indian Express from Pakistan, the journalist said: “I cannot believe that they can stoop so low. Sukhjinder Randhawa, PPCC chief Navjot Singh Sidhu and his wife (Navjot Kaur Sidhu) are a pack of hyenas. They are trying to use me to embarrass Captain. I want to ask them, are they so bankrupt that they have to invoke me for their political motives.”

The Pakistani journalist expressed anger after Punjab Home Minister Sukhjinder Randhawa, last week, called for a probe into whether Amarinder Singh’s Pakistani friend Aroosa Alam has links with the country’s notorious intelligence agency ISI.

Alam said she was “extremely disappointed and disgusted with Punjab Congress politicians” and would “never come back to India” as she was “hurt and heartbroken”.

‘They are a deeply divided House. Now please fight your battle on your own’, Pakistani journalist slams Congress fro dragging her name

“I would like to inform them that they were trapped,” she said, despite the fact that she has “no business” commenting on the situation in the state. Their “enemy” suggested they invoke me. However, it will be counterproductive,” the Pakistani journalist added, not naming the ‘enemy’ she referred to.

“I have a message for them: Please grow up and put your house in order. Congress has lost its plot in Punjab. Who changes one’s general in the middle of a battle?” she said, referring to the ousting of Captain Amarinder Singh’s as CM months ahead of the Assembly elections.

“They are a deeply divided House. Now please fight your battle on your own, why are you dragging me into this Punjab Congress and government mess? Now that they have dragged me into it, I can only say ‘Your monkeys, your circus’,” said the piqued journalist.

The journalist further hit out at the Congress party by saying that they dragged her into the whole controversy just to embarrass Captain Amarinder Singh. “They realised that he is floating his own party and finish all their chances”, said Alam while talking to Indian Express.

“I sent him (Singh) pictures of various leaders from India whom I met in my life before even meeting Captain. I must say all this is the lowest low in Punjab politics,” she said.

Speaking to News18, Alam denied having links with the ISI. “The biggest democracy in the world is insulting a woman. I feel sad that my photo is being shared again and again. I too have a family, children and friends; I reiterate that I am innocent,” she said.

Captain releases picture of Aroosa Alam with Sonia Gandhi

On October 23, hours after Punjab Home Minister Sukhjinder Randhawa called for a probe into whether Captain Amarinder Singh’s Pakistani friend Aroosa Alam had links with the country’s notorious intelligence agency ISI, the former Punjab Chief Minister reminded Randhwa that Alam’s visa was cleared by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) for 16 years.

Releasing a picture of the Pakistani journalist with Sonia Gandhi, Captain Amarinder also asked Sukhjinder Randhawa to first make up his mind about the probe instead of being ‘perturbed’ and ‘confused.’ “Why don’t you make up your mind on this so-called probe against Aroosa Alam?” he challenged.

Did you know? Pakistan had targeted the Hindu holy city of Dwarka in 1965, wanted to destroy it

The date was September 7, 1965. India was engaged in fighting the Pakistani forces, which had infiltrated into the Indian territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The war between the two nations was at its peak when Pakistan decided to attack the Holy Hindu city of Dwarka in Gujarat in northwestern India.

Since the armed forces were busy fighting in Punjab and Kashmir, Pakistan deployed its Navy to carry out a ‘nuisance raid’. A detailed account of this raid by the Pakistan Navy was published by Sandeep Unnithan in DailO.

Dwarka is located about 200 km away from Karachi. Owing to its physical proximity to Pakistan’s major port city, the Pakistani Navy sent out a fleet of 7 naval vessels. It included one light cruiser (PNS Babur), and 6 destroyers, namely, PNS Khaibar, PNS Tippu Sultan, PNS Badr, PNS Jahangir, PNS Shah Jahan, and PNS Alamgir.

The ulterior motives of Pakistan behind attacking Dwarka

Interestingly, the fleet was named after all Islamic invaders who had committed brutal atrocities against the Hindus. Pakistan wanted to divert the attention of the Indian Air Force (IAF) from the Northern front and force the Indian Navy to mobilise its ships from Mumbai (then Bombay) towards Dwarka. The Pakistan Navy sought to destroy the supposed radar installations in Dwarka and damage Indian vessels using its submarine, PNS Ghazi.

A signal was sent from the Pakistani Navy Headquarters. It read, “Task group comprising PNS BABUR, PNS KHAIBAR, PNS BADR, PNS JAHANGIR, PNS ALAMGIR, PNS SHAHJAHAN and PNS TIPU SULTAN is to be in position 239 degrees – 120 miles from Dwarka lighthouse by 071800 E Sep with maximum power available.”

It further stated, “Task group thereafter to carryout bombardment of Dwarka about midnight using 50 rounds per ship. Force is to retire from bombardment area by 080030 E Sep and return to present patrol area at full speed. One or two enemy frigates may be expected to encounter in the area in addition to enemy air threat.” The sinister plan was to be carried out under the supervision of the then Commodore S.M. Anwar.

Pakistan dubbed ‘Operation Dwarka’ a success, made baseless claims of huge losses to the Indian side

As per Pakistani claims, their warships fired nine shells which supposedly destroyed the infrastructure of the Indian Naval Radar station in Dwarka. The Pakistani forces also claimed to have killed 13 Indian sailors, and two officers. They also claimed that the Indian radar system was to be used by the IAF for attacking Pakistan, which got allegedly stalled due to shelling by Pakistan’s navy vessels.

Hailing the ‘nuisance raid’ as a successful operation, Parhlo wrote, “The success of the Dwarka operation is attributed to the unflinching sense of alacrity to serve the nation beyond the call of duty marked by the highest sense of patriotism and sacrifice. Though the war was indecisive, India suffered much heavier material and personnel casualties compared to Pakistan.”

Eventually, Radio Pakistan also added fuel to the fire of misinformation. It claimed that PNS Babur shelled and damaged Dwarka such that the trail of smoke was visible from 10 miles.

Indian army tells the real story and how Pakistan could manage to kill one cow

While recounting the incident, former Indian Air Force Sergent Ramesh Madan wrote, “I looked at my watch and it was 01:15 am on the morning of September 8, 1965. I wanted to say something to my companion, then, there was a loud SWIIISHHH and a BOOOM. Both, my companion and me looked towards that direction but the first BOOOM was followed by more SWIIIISHES and BOOMS!!  Everyone in the unit and the city was up and running all around. People were jumping in the trenches and or falling flat on the ground to escape from this shelling.”

He added the shelling stopped only after 10 minutes, post which everyone went out of their trenches. In a letter to his family, Sergent Ramesh Madan said, “There are more donkeys in Dwarka than people and none of the donkeys has been injured so what can one say about the people”.” He informed that the smoke the Pakistanis claimed to be of the damage caused due to shelling, was in fact from an Associated Cement Company factory. The said factory was located 0.5 miles away from the Indian base in Dwarka and the smoke could be seen up to 20 miles away.

With the help of villagers, they recovered almost 25 to 30 shells. They bore the marking of the ‘Indian Ordinance’ and were dated between 1940-1946. It became clear that the ammunition fired by the Pakistani vessels were the ones handed to them at the time of Partition. A large number of shells fell on the field between the Dwarkadhish temple and the Railway station.

“All the other shells went over the village and into the fields. The miracle behind this was that the sea level had risen from the time the Pakistani ship had taken its position to the time it started shelling. This resulted in most of the shells overshooting Dwarka,” IAF Sergent Ramesh Madan concluded.

Nevertheless, the Pakistanis failed to inflict any damage and also lost the 1965 war subsequently. But since the State of Pakistan runs on falsified history, despite not making any impact, it celebrates September 8 as ‘Pakistan Navy Day.’ According to DailyO, the only casualty in the Pakistani shelling at Dwarka was an unfortunate cow.

The Impact of ‘Operation Dwarka’ on Indian Navy

Indian Navy underwent tremendous modernisation in the following decades owing to the nuisance raid by Pakistan. “India decided to accept the pending offer of the Soviet Union to meet the Indian Navy’s requirements for the latest ships and submarines; the new units would be based in the Bay of Bengal to counter Indonesian adventurism. Finally, to deter attacks on coastal ports, like that on Dwarka, Soviet missile boats of the type that had been supplied to the Indonesian and Egyptian navies were to be evaluated,” wrote Indian Navy Vice Admiral (retd.) Gulab Hiranandani.

Between 1966 and 1971, India acquired 5 patrol boats, 5 submarine chasers, 2 landing ships, 4 submarines, a submarine depot ship, a submarine rescue vessel, and 8 missile boats from Soviet Russia.

Maharashtra govt initiates procedure to declare ex-Mumbai CP Param Bir Singh as absconder

0

Maharashtra government has decided to seek the help of the Central agencies to locate former Mumbai police commissioner Parambir Singh. Reports suggest that the Maharashtra government is also considering legal opinions on the matter and is set to declare Parambir Singh as an absconder after it has failed to trace Singh. Earlier, the state CID had issued a lookout notice against Param Bir Singh.

Param Bir was removed from his Mumbai Police Commissioner post in March, after which he wrote a letter to chief minister Thackeray where he made serious corruption charges against state home minister Anil Deshmukh.

Param Bir Singh missed appearing before the Justice Chandiwal commission constituted to investigate his allegations. The Maharashtra government further told the Bombay High Court that since the former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh facing police probe is missing, the Maharashtra police is under no obligations to extend ‘no coercive action’ assurance to him.

Senior Advocate Darius Khambata had earlier said, “In view of other developments, we are getting reports that Param Bir Singh is not traceable. Hence, the government is not inclined to continue its statement of no coercive action in this matter,”

The submission of the Maharashtra government that Singh was untraceable came when Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil informed that he may have left the country.

Param Bir Singh is known to be on leave from his post and had sought several extensions of his leave to the state govt. His last communication to the state government was in the second week of August, where he had sought an extension of leave till August 29. After that there has been no communication from him.

The former Mumbai police commissioner Parambir Singh is wanted in several ongoing cases under investigation including the Antilia Bomb scare, Mansukh Hiren murder case, and the Mumbai police extortion case.

NCB opposes Aryan Khan’s bail plea, alleges Shah Rukh’s manager Pooja Dadlani influenced witness

Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has opposed the bail application of actor Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan in Bombay High Court alleging Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan’s manager Pooja Dadlani “appears to have influenced panch witness when the investigation is ongoing”. The court was hearing bail application filed by Khan’s advocate.

In the 35-page reply, NCB mentioned the affidavit filed by witness Prabhakar Sail and said there were attempts to tamper with the ongoing investigation. It further added that Khan’s bail application was liable to be rejected on the sole ground that there were clear instances of tampering, influencing witnesses in the midst of an ongoing investigation.

The agency said, “Significantly, such purported affidavit names one Pooja Dadlani, Manager connected to this applicant. It so appears that the said lady appears to have influenced such panch witness when the investigation is ongoing. Such interference at the stage of investigation is a malafide attempt to ensure that the same is derailed and the quest of truth is obstructed.”

Aryan Khan drug case

On October 2, actor Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan was arrested during a raid by NCB. Currently, he is lodged in Mumbai’s Arthur Road jail. His bail plea has been rejected multiple times by the court pertaining opposition by the investigation agency.

Arvind Kejriwal seeks Lord Ram’s blessings at Ayodhya, had earlier invoked his Nani to support Babri Masjid

Arvind Kejriwal on Monday announced that he had been to Ayodhya to attend the Aarti on the banks of the Saryu River. The Delhi Chief Minister appears to have been overwhelmed by a newfound sense of piety ahead of the elections in Uttar Pradesh.

Arvind Kejriwal said that he had sought the blessings of Shri Ram and of Lord Hanuman at Hanumangarhi. He said that he prayed for the well-being and prosperity of all countrymen. He ended his tweet saying, “Jai Shri Ram”.

The Delhi Chief Minister appears to have sharply altered his tone on Ayodhya and Shri Ram. In 2014, Kejriwal had said Shri Ram could not live in a Temple that was built after the demolition of a Masjid. He had said at a rally, “When the Babri Masjid was demolished, I asked my grandmother that she must be happy. A temple for her Bhagwan Ram will be constructed in Ayodhya. To which she replied, my Ram will not live in a temple that is constructed by demolishing a mosque.”

As for his devotion towards Pawan Putra Hanuman, Arvind Kejriwal had posted a derogatory image of Shri Ram’s greatest devotee in his attempt to mock the BJP. The Delhi Chief Minister in recent times has chosen to withdraw his coarse anti-Hindu rhetoric and focus instead on emphasising his Hindu credentials. Ahead of the assembly elections in Delhi, he was targeted over the same by Islamists.

Mamata Banerjee hoardings vandalised in Goa, ‘Khela Hobe’ didi blames BJP: Details

Ahead of TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee visit to poll-bound Goa, posters and hoarding with the Trinamool Congress supremo’s face were vandalised and defaced in the state. Several TMC hoardings and billboards across Goa were pulled down, destroyed, and Mamata Banerjee’s face on the banners was smeared with ink. The Goa unit of the party has pinned the blame on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

TMC alleged on Tuesday, October 26, that BJP conducted a closed-door meeting during which it was decided that Mamata Banerjee’s photo would be defaced and hoardings across Goa would be demolished “overnight.”

Posters of TMC vandalised in Goa ahead of Mamata Banerjee’s visit

TMC releases statement, condemns the vandalism and “attempts to threaten” by the ruling BJP govt in Goa

“Goa TMC condemns this act of vandalism that amounts to insulting a woman who is the only sitting female Chief Minister in the country. Goans will definitely give a befitting response to such a vengeful Government. The latest pictures are evidence of how the BJP has not just vandalised Goa TMC branding but has done so at the cost of Goans,” a press release by Goa TMC stated.

“While defacing Mamata Banerjee’s face in hoardings is in itself a shameful act, what’s more, alarming is how the BJP, drunk on power, is destroying local businesses. They forget that in all such contracts it is the liability of the businessmen or the vendor to replace any damaged hoarding with their own money. So, clearly, the BJP is not just spreading hate but is also attacking the livelihood of hundreds of fellow Goans by destroying their business. Such acts are an attack on the fearless atmosphere for business,” the press release further added.

Posters of TMC vandalised in Goa ahead of Mamata Banerjee’s visit

The party also took to Twitter to pin the blame for the incident on BJP. “National Vice President of AITC, Shri @luizinhofaleiro expresses his disappointment as BJP hits a new low. After the Goa TMC’s launch of the People’s Chargesheet against the Govt, their banners and hoardings were torn & Smt. @MamataOfficial ’s face on the banners was defaced”, Tweeted the party while sharing a video message by former Congress leader and Goa chief minister Luizinho Faleiro, who joined the party last month.

TMC releases political cartoon showing Mamata Banerjee crushing PM and HM with her slippers

While the TMC is attempting to use the issue to launch an attack on the BJP with allegations that have no evidence to back them up, it’s worth remembering that Mamata Banerjee’s party only two days previously released posters wherein TMC not only normalised but also celebrated violence.

The political cartoon showed a woman, clad in a white saree with a blue strip, something which the West Bengal Chief Minister wears, crushing three people, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and one civilian under her slipper-wearing foot.

The image was shared with the text “HATERS BEWARE! SHE IS COMING.” Here, ‘she’ is very likely TMC chief Mamata Banerjee. Essentially, with this image, TMC is not only normalising violence but even celebrating it.

It is pertinent to remember that while TMC is complaining about its hoardings getting vandalised, it had unleashed a reign of terror after the West Bengal Assembly Elections. Several BJP workers were murdered, women raped and villages burnt down. It is believed that the violence was a direct result of the ‘Khela Hobe’ anthem that Mamata Banerjee had given in the run up to elections. Furthermore, TMC had even celebrated “Khela Hoba Diwas” on the anniversary of the Direct Action Day where Hindus had been murdered by Muslims.

Meanwhile, Goa is preparing for the forthcoming assembly elections in 2022, which would include all 40 Assembly constituencies. The TMC and Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are the two new political parties that will run in the 2022 elections.
