Raza Academy behind communal violence in Maharashtra: Here is everything you need to know about the Islamist outfit

Maharashtra has been in the grips of communal violence since the 12th of November when protests against the alleged targeting of Muslims in Tripura turned violent. In Nanded, the Raza Academy, an Islamist outfit responsible for 2012 Azad Maidan riots, had called for a sit-in protest. The youth associated with the Islamist outfit made an attempt to enter mixed-residential areas. Their plan was thwarted by the police, following which they resorted to stone-pelting.

As per reports, the riot control police reached the spot to quell the mob, which in turn started targeting the police officers by throwing stones at them. In retaliation, the police resorted to a mild lathi charge. “We are registering offences that took place, currently, the situation is peaceful in Nanded. I request people to not believe in rumours. 7-8 police officials have been injured,” informed SP (Nanded) Pramod Kumar Shewale.

BJP leader Nitesh Rane took cognisance of the matter and dubbed Raza academy as a ‘terrorist organisation.’ He said, “This terrorist organisation Raza academy is behind all the violence and riots in different parts of Maharashtra! Every time they disrupt and break all the rules and the government sits and watches. Either the government bans them or we have to finish them in the interest of Maharashtra!”

The origins of Raza Academy

As per an article in The Times of India, Raza Academy was founded in 1978. Its office is located on Mohammed Ali Road in Mumbai. The Islamist outfit was established to publish and propagate the work of Sunni leader Ahmed Raza Khan, who lived in the 20th century. In 2012, it came to light that the organisation did not have any registration. The most surprising aspect about Raza Academy is that its founder and President Saeed Noori did not even receive a formal Islamic education. He was into the sewing thread business when he decided to become a leader of Sunni Islam.

TOI reported that Raza Academy under the leadership of Noori shifted direction from publishing literature to leading Islamist protests. It had led several protests, which often led to violence, injuries and deaths. Despite its activities, Raza Academy has not been banned or subjected to police scrutiny. The Times of India reported that the outfit had the support of a former Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader R R Patil. Noori had conceded, “We go to Patil because he is accessible to us.” In his defence, the founder of Raza Academy had claimed to provide a platform to Muslims to express their anger in a democratic setup.

On 11 August 2012, Raza academy had staged a morcha at Azad Maidan ground to protest against the alleged atrocities on Muslims in Assam and Myanmar. However, the protest turned violent after the notorious group attacked the policemen. This led to police firing, resulting in 2 deaths and 63 injuries. Raza Academy had earlier assured the Mumbai Police that only 1500 people would turn up for the protest. 

However, more than 15000 people assembled at the Azad Maidan, which later increased to 40000. The most shocking incident of the Azad Maidan Riots was the desecration of the Amar Jawan Jyoti memorial by the Muslim mobs.

Later, it came to light that the police waited for one week until Eid to arrest the 35-40 Muslim youths, who were involved in rioting. The riots had caused approximately Rs 2.72 crores worth of damages to various public properties.

Raza Academy and its crusade against ‘blasphemy’

In July last year, the Islamist outfit forced the Maha Vikas Aghadi government to write to the Centre, seeking a ban on the online streaming of the Iranian movie ‘Muhammad: The Messenger of God.‘ The film was originally released in Iran in 2015 and was selected as the Iranian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 88th Academy Awards. Raza Academy had said that Prophet Muhammad could not be picturised and that the makers of the film had committed blasphemy. “A Muslim will die in honour than to see or hear even the slightest insult on his Holy Prophet,” it had threatened.

In October 2020, the Islamist outfit had demanded that Muslim countries issue a fatwa against French President Emmanuel Macron after cartoons on Prophet Mohammed by Charlie Hebdo were projected onto government buildings. It demanded that all French embassies and consulates in Muslim countries be shut down and all ambassadors to France be recalled. It also urged people on social media to exercise their freedom of expression against the ‘Satanic minded president’ using the hashtag ‘Macron the Devil’.

Raza Academy had hailed the actions of Muslim protestors in Mumbai, who had put up images of the French President on the streets of the city, walked and drove on those posters as a mark of protest against Macron. The protests had come after Macron had condemned the Islamic terror attack on a French teacher who was beheaded by his student for showing Charlie Hebdo caricatures.

In February this year, an organisation named Tahaffuz Namoos-e-Risalat Board (Protection of the Honour of Prophet), backed by Raza Academy had filed a complaint against BBC Hindi for displaying a portrait of Prophet Mohammed in one of their shows. BBC, which champions the cause of free speech, gave in to the threats and issued an apology immediately.

In September, Raza Academy ran a campaign on social media platforms, urging King Salman of Saudi Arabia to impose a ban on cinema halls in Madina Shareef. The Islamist outfit also held a protest march outside Minara Masjid in Mumbai. The protestors were heard raising slogans of “Saudi Hukumat Murdabad” and holding placards that read, “Saudi Government Must Stop Desecration of The Holy City of Madina Munawwarah.” The development came at the backdrop of the Kingdom’s decision to open 10 cinema halls in the country.

After senior Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar glorified Mughal rulers and claimed that the Mughals did not indulge in religious persecution or forced conversions, Congress leader Salman Nizami has come out in support of Aiyar and said that the Mughals were those people who fought against the British rule for the country. He further added that ‘Mughals’ were those who maintained good relationship with the Rajputs. He claimed that the GDP of the country under the Mughals were more than 25%.

Nizami said, ‘People are being ‘misled’ about Mughals, RSS hate Mughals because the Mughals have not signed any mercy petitions to the British, they have fought the British in 1857. Mughals were those whose closest people were Rajputs, under the Mughals, the GDP of the country was more than 25%.’

In the video, Anchor Rubika Liyaquat slammed Salman Nizami for heaping praises on the Mughal rulers while Acharya Vikramaditya asked the Congress leader if he got educated in a Madrassa or a University. Nizami continued his Mughal rambling even when Liyaquat said, “I will repeat everything you are saying about the Mughals, but will you be able to speak 10 lines about Maharana Pratap?” Even after repeated insistance, Nizami was not able to say even a line about Maharana Pratap.

Rubika Liyaquat said the number of people glorifying Mughals today would not even have been present at their Court.

Earlier, Senior Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar had praised and glorified the Mughal rulers at a function to celebrate birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru where he said that they did not take part in religious persecution or forced conversions but instead were patriots. Aiyar had also claimed that the Congress party considered Akbar as their own and not an outsider.

He said, “Our Congress office is also on Akbar Road, we have no issues. We are not saying ‘We are Congress, how can we stay on Akbar Road, change it to Maharana Pratap Road’. We never say that. Because we consider Akbar our own. We don’t consider him an outsider. Because he followed the instructions by his grandfather. They married Rajput women and hence they were part Hindus.”

The e-commerce giant Amazon is under the scanner after the Madhya Pradesh police busted an online marijuana smuggling racket following the arrest of two men in Bhind district. The Madhya Pradesh police have summoned Amazon Inc’s local executives after investigations revealed that around a tonne of ganja worth Rs 1.10 crores was smuggled through Amazon over the past four months.

On Monday, the Bhind district police superintendent, Manoj Kumar Singh, said Amazon executives have been asked to explain how their platform could be used for the sale of banned substances.

According to reports, the multi-crore drug racket was unearthed after Madhya Pradesh police arrested two men with 21 kg of Marijuana worth Rs 2,10,000 on them. The police subsequently found that the accused used Amazon online shopping platform for smuggling the contraband narcotic substance from Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) to Madhya Pradesh.

The Madhya Pradesh police on November 13 filed an FIR against the two accused- Suraj alias Kallu Pavaiya, a native of Morar in Gwalior, and Pintu alias Bijendra Singh Tomar, who runs a roadside dhaba in Bhind district. The FIr was filed based on a complaint lodged against the duo by Ashish Yadav. The FIR was lodged under the 29 NDPS Act.

The FIR mentions that the accused were found with two air tickets, one of Indigo and the other of Air Asia airlines. They also found two stroller bags with the accused. From the first bag, the police recovered six Amazon parcels, while four Amazon parcels were found in the second bag. When the parcels were opened, it was found that they contained contraband narcotic substances.

The police informed that Pintu use to receive Amazon parcels containing the contraband in his name at his dhaba, from where it was sold in the city and also pushed to other cities like Bhopal and Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, to Haridwar in Uttarakhand and Kota in Rajasthan.

Speaking about the case, Bhind district police superintendent Manoj Kumar Singh said that investigations revealed that the accused were using the Amazon website to send parcels of contraband narcotic substances, each weighing 2 kgs from Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) to Madhya Pradesh and other places. In total, in the last four months, the accused smuggled 1-ton ganja (marijuana) through the Amazon platform said SP, Bhind district.

Besides, an aide to the arrested men has been apprehended in Haridwar for questioning based on the duo’s interrogation (Uttarakhand).

Manoj Kumar Singh said that during interrogation Suraj alias Kallu Pavaiya confessed to smuggling approximately 1-ton ganja worth crores through the Amazon platform. The arrested duo’s grilling has also revealed that over 67 per cent of the share of the monetary transactions went to the online shopping major, said the SP.

Answering to query whether Amazon has been named a party in the criminal investigation, SP Bhind said that Amazon has been informed and details of a Gujarat-based company named Babu Tex has been sought from the e-commerce giant.

According to reports, the racket’s kingpin Suraj Pavaiya had registered as a seller of herbal products and Curry Leaves with the Amazon shopping portal using details of a Gujarat-based textile company named Babu Tex and also subsequently got the power to generate barcode from Amazon.

Police officer Singh said his team also visited one of Amazon’s delivery hubs in Gwalior city in Madhya Pradesh as part of the investigation to get details of alleged marijuana delivery consignments.

Responding to the allegations, the Amazon spokesperson has reportedly said “We’re currently investigating whether there is any non-compliance on part of the seller. We assure full co-operation and support required to investigating authorities and law enforcement agencies with ongoing investigations”.

Meanwhile, the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chauhan to prevent the issue from becoming a political tool.

CAIT National President BC Bhartia stated Madhya Pradesh police should take the strongest possible action against Amazon under the NDPS Act and the IPC, and arrest those responsible for the operation and management of Amazon.in India immediately.

CAIT Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal said, “Amazon has not only enabled the sale of commercial quantities of forbidden narcotics on its platform but has also actively participated in the sale, earning a significant profit of 66% of the selling value”. The trader’s body has urged strict action against the e-commerce giant.

Raghav Juyal, an actor and a television presenter, has been accused of perpetuating racism on TV show Dance Deewane 3, a dance reality show hosted by him. 

In one episode, Juyal was seen remarks involving Momos and Chow Mein before introducing a contestant named Gunjan Singh, a little girl who hailed from Assam. The clip appears to be old as the host has reportedly quit the show since then.

Before introducing her on the stage, Raghav Juyal tried to evoke laughter among his listeners by making inane remarks in what he claimed to be Chinese. When judges Remo D’Souza, Madhuri Dixit and others asked him what is he speaking, Juyal says they won’t understand it and then goes on on to introduce Gunjan Singh as a girl whose “Chinese” might be incomprehensible, but her dance is understood by everyone. 

“Introducing the little girl whose Chinese may not be indecipherable but her dance is understood by everyone…she is Gunjan Singh from Assam,” Juyal says.

Social media users slam Raghav Juyal for his racist remarks for an Assamese contestant

The Chinese jibes taken at the contestant from Assam did not sit well with social media users, who condemned the television presenter and asked Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and Assam Police to act against him.

Many others were shocked that racism was promoted so causally under the pretext of comedy.

Social media users were angry with Juyal’s racist comments made for Assamese people and asked him to issue an unconditional apology. 

Casual racism and othering of Indians from the northeast are one of the most common forms of racism prevalent in India. People from the northeast India are often racially discriminated on the basis of their appearance or subjected to mockery by making racist references such as “Chinese”, “Momos”, “Chinky” and others against them.

Juyal issues statement

After the clip went viral, Raghav Juyal has issued a statement and said that it was not racism on his part but something that the child had said earlier that led to the joke. He said that once the girl had said she can spek in Chinese, which turned out to be gibberish, and since then, it had become an ongoing joke on the show.

According to Juyal, in previous episodes, it can be seen that it was a running joke which was inspired by the girl’s innocent comment about being able to speak Chinese and had nothing to do with racism. However, he did not elaborate on the ‘Momo’ and ‘Chow Mein’ comments.

Before Raghav Juyal at Dance Deewane 3, there was YouTuber Paras Singh

Earlier this year, Punjab police had arrested popular YouTuber Paras Singh after a case was registered against him for making a racist slur against Ninong Ering in one of his videos.

Paras had called Ering a non-Indian and Arunachal Pradesh as part of China. It was after the Congress legislator wrote a letter to PM Modi, asking to ban the re-launch of PUBG Mobile India’s new avatar Battlegrounds Mobile India. The Youtuber was then brought to Itanagar on May 27. He was also given lessons on Arunachal Pradesh’s history and culture and was taught about the international border separating India and China. Paras has now been sent to judicial custody.

Former Pakistani pacer Shoaib Akhtar shared a video of a rather ‘unconventional’ manner of celebration by the Australian cricket team after they won the T20 World Cup on Sunday. In the video, Australian wicket-keeper Matthew Wade and Marcus Stoinis could be seen drinking beer from their shoe. Shoaib Akhtar described the celebration by Australia as ‘disgusting’.

Marcus Stoinis himself appeared to be repulsed by the taste, which likely was not too great given that the beer came from a smelly shoe. Matthew Wade took out the shoe he was wearing for the exotic celebratory move.

Pakistanis appeared particularly distressed by the shoe drink move, which could have partly been due to the fact that Australia had beaten them in the semifinal.

Some hurled religious slurs at Australia and called them ‘Mushrik’, that is, someone who has rejected the Islamic world.

Australia defeated New Zealand in the final of the T20 World Cup, chasing the target of 173 with 8 wickets and more than an over to spare. It was the maiden T20 World Cup win for Australia.

A week earlier, Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist Pranaav Jerry Chopra said on Twitter that back in 2018, he was among the athletes invited to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi as part of a felicitation programme. Consequently, athletes had the opportunity to click their photographs with the Prime Minister. Unfortunately, however, not all the photographs were posted on social media.

Thus, on November 8, Pranaav Jerry Chopra appealed to the requisite authorities to share his photograph with Narendra Modi with him as it was a very special moment for him and his family. He said, “PM sir’s photographs were clicked shaking hands with all the athletes and then all those photos were posted on Twitter. Some of the photos were missed and I was one of the unlucky ones whose photo wasn’t posted. It was a lifetime experience for me to be able to meet PM sir and getting clicked shaking hands with him.”

He added, “I tried from different ways other than social medial but could not reach you regarding the same. I humbly request you if you can please share that photo with me as it is a matter of pride for me and my family to have experienced such a moment with our Honourable PM sir.”

On Monday, Chopra informed that he had received the photograph that he so desired. He said that he was immensely grateful for the fact that his request was considered. Tagging, the official handle of the Prime Minister’s office and Narendra Modi, Pranaav Jerry Chopra said, “Respected Sir, I am highly grateful to you for considering my request and sharing the picture with me. It had always been a moment of pride for me and my family that I got a chance to meet you and now I can cherish that picture for my entire life.”

The Badminton player also thanked people for retweeting his tweets.

Pranaav Jerry Chopra is an Indian Badminton player who won the Gold Medal at the Mixed Team event at the Commonwealth Games 2018. He hold the distinguished record of being only the second Indian player ever to hold a position in the Top 15 World Rankings with his partner.

Chopra is one of the many athletes who have a profound respect for the Indian Prime Minister. Recently, after PV Sindhu’s heroics at the Tokyo Olympics, Prime Minister Narendra Modi fulfilled his promise of having ice-cream with the ace shuttler.

Prior to the Tokyo Olympics, Indian athletes on their way to the event had thanked the Prime Minister for boosting their morale.

Complaint asks CJI NV Ramana for action against Kangana Ranaut for ‘blasphemous’ and ‘seditious’ ‘Independence ki bheek’ remark

An advocate practising at the Telangana High Court in Hyderabad has filed a written complaint with the Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana asking him to direct the central government to take penal action against the Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut. Calling the actor’s statement, where she said that India attained true independence only after 2014, blasphemous, the lawyer in his letter dated November 15, 2021, urged CJI to order the government of India to press sedition charges against the actress.

The advocate, also a member of the Bar Council of Telangana, stated that Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut’s remark is disrespectful and hurtful to the sentiments of all citizens of India and that the statement is particularly objectionable as it attacks the Indian Constitution.

The lawyer, in his complaint, further claimed that the actor’s remark has been widely spread across social media and print media and both the central as well as the state governments are well aware of the same, but, somehow, for reasons best known to them failed to initiate any action against Ranaut.

He submitted that Kangana Ranaut’s statement is directly degrading to the freedom fighters and martyrs who have laid down their lives for India’s independence in 1947. He added that Kangana’s remark was critical of the freedom fighters and the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi, which warrants stringent criminal action against her for sedition and bringing disrepute to the Constitution of India.

He added that Kangana should be charged for sedition under the provisions of IPC Sections 124-A, 504, 505 and so also Section 2 of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971.

“In view of the above facts and circumstances in consideration, I pray and begs before Your Lordship to take Suo-Moto cognisance of this Petition by initiating enquiry and directing the executives of the Union of India to take penal action against Kangana Ranaut, in the interest of Justice,” the letter read.

Earlier, four-time national award-winning actress Kangana Ranaut had stoked up controversy after she said that India attained real freedom only in 2014 when the Narendra Modi government came to power. She had described India’s independence in 1947 from the British as ‘bheek’ (alms). After her comment drew ire, Kangana had gone on to defend herself and said that she would return her Padma award if she is proven wrong.

Amidst all the hullabaloo surrounding Ranaut’s remark, veteran actor Vikram Gokhale on Sunday extended his support to Kangana Ranaut. Explaining Ranaut’s rationale behind the remark, Gokhale had said that we in India got freedom in alms as it was ‘given’. He said many freedom fighters were hanged and the bigwigs at that time didn’t try to save them and remained mute spectators, he added.

Loksatta glorifies slain Maoist terrorist Milind Teltumbde, calls his life “exciting and interesting”

Marathi vernacular Lok Satta recently published an article in which it eulogised Maoist terrorist Milind Teltumbde and described his life as “exciting and interesting”. 

The article was published on Sunday, November 14, a day after Milind Teltumbde, a top rung leader of the banned left-wing terror outfit CPI (Maoist) was amongst the 26 Naxals killed in the Gadchiroli encounter with the elite C-60 commando force on Saturday.

In its article, Loksatta recounted various incidents in Milind’s life that led to his initiation into the Naxalism and his subsequent activities while being a part of the Maoist movement. However, while doing so, the Marathi vernacular hailed his journey from embracing Naxalism to becoming the most-wanted Maoist as both “thrilling and fascinating”.

It is worth noting that Teltumbde had been among the “most-wanted” criminals by the law enforcement agencies. He carried a bounty of Rs 50 lakh on his head, and was among the prime accused involved in ginning up violence in the Bhima Koregaon Elgar Parishad case. As per NIA charge sheet, he along with others, was slapped with almost two dozen charges under the UAPA. 

In a charge sheet filed in 2020, the NIA had named Anand Teltumbde, Gautam Navlakha, Hany Babu, Sagar Gorkhe, Ramesh Gaichor, Jyoti Jagtap and Stan Swamy of having conspired to further the ideology of left-wing terror group CPI (Maoist). They were accused of abetting violence and bringing into hatred and inciting dissatisfaction against the establishment and government. They were also accused of promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, caste and community.

Milind Teltumbde was inspired to continue Maoist activities by his brother Anand Teltumbde

Milind Teltumbde has been absconding and was accused of organising training camps for imparting weapon training to other members of the terror organisation. He was the younger brother of Anand Teltumbde, another Urban Naxal arrested in connection with the Bhima Koregaon-Elgar Parishad case.

A special NIA court in Mumbai hard earlier in July 2021 dismissed the bail application filed by activist Anand Teltumbde, stating that charges against him were prima facie true.

Special NIA Judge Kothalikar observed that Anand Teltumbde has failed in offering an explanation as to why his name appeared as a convener on the book or pamphlet titled ‘Bhima Koregaon Shauryadin Prerana Abhiyan’, which was printed prior to the programme on December 31, 2017.

Anand Teltumbde also served as an inspiration to Milind Teltumbde for further the activities of CPI(Maoist). The NIA in its charge sheet had said, “Milind alias Deepak is expanding the Naxal movement of Maoist in urban areas with the help of his elder brother Anand Teltumbde on the international level and took guidance from him. Milind was inspired by his brother to join the CPI (Maoist) movement.”

France: Man, who killed a Holocaust survivor in 2018 after shouting ‘Allah hu Akbar’, sentenced to life imprisonment

On Wednesday (November 10), a French court sentenced the killer of a Holocaust survivor named Mireille Knoll to life imprisonment with no chance of parole for 22 years.

As per reports, the 85-year-old Knoll was killed on March 23, 2018, at her Paris apartment by an Islamist named Yacine Mihoub. She was stabbed 11 times and her house was set on fire, which partially burnt her body. The incident had sparked outrage among the Jewish community in France. Mihoub, the 32-year-old accused, lived in the same neighbourhood and visited her house for odd jobs. Knoll was a Holocaust survivor, who managed to flee Nazi Germany for Portugal with her mother.

According to her son Daniel, he did not expect Mihoub to kill his mother. He said that Knoll protected Mihoub for years and it came as a surprise when he turned out to be the executioner. At the time of Knoll’s murder, she was suffering from Parkinson’s disease and could not move an inch without help. Despite this, she was brutally murdered by Mihoub. The Islamist was aided in his crime by a man named Alex Carrimbacus.

Carrimbacus told the Court that the Islamist was arguing with the victim about Jews having money and wealth, on the day of her death. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison on charges of robbery. In his statement in court, Carrimbacus regretted not preventing the ‘savage’ attack on the Holocaust survivor. The prosecutors pointed out the jihadist messages in the prison cell of Mihoub as proof of his anti-Semitic behaviour.

SP MLA loses his mind: Abu Azmi calls Kangana Ranaut ‘talve chatne vali aurat’, says Yogi selectively targeting places with Muslim names

Two days after Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath claimed that the state university in Azamgarh, the foundation of which was laid in the town, would lead it to become ‘Aryamgarh’, Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi hit out at the CM saying that Yogi Adityanath is selectively targeting places with Muslim names. Speaking to TV9 Bharatvarsh, the SP MLA said that the “Yogi government is changing the Muslim name. The purpose is to only do Hindu-Muslim (politics)”.

Abu Azmi was overheard applauding his party’s president Akhilesh Yadav’s remark on the matter, in which the latter reportedly stated that his party would return to power before the ink used by Yogi Adityanath’s government to write the new name of Azamgarh dried out. “Then we would change it back to Azamgarh,” said Azmi.

The SP leader’s response came when the TV9 Bharatvarsh anchor asked Azmi his opinion on Yogi Adityanath’s claim that the constitution of a state university in Azamgarh will truly turn the district into Aryamgarh. The CM was addressing a public rally in Azamgarh along with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday when he said: “The university, the foundation stone of which I laid today, will turn Azamgarh to Aryamgarh, and there should be no doubt about it.”

This statement created a buzz with people speculating that Yogi Adityanath might have dropped a hint at changing the name of Azamgarh to Aryamgarh.

Further, when Abu Azmi was asked what he thought about Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut’s Independence ki ‘bheek’ remark, he was quick to launch an ad hominem attack on the national award-winning actress.

The SP leader said that Kangana Ranaut “ek talve chatne vali aurat hain, use jail bhej dena chahiye” (she is a bootlicker, she should be sent to jail). Without explicitly taking the name of BJP, Azmi added that Kangana Ranaut fawns over the party which she said brought real freedom to India after 2014.

When the news anchor tries to warn Abu Azmi about the perils of making such remarks about a woman, the SP leader exhibited no remorse. In fact, he brazened it out saying “kahen diya so kahen diya” (I have said what I had to), “koi afsos nahi hain” (I have no regrets).

Earlier, Kangana Ranaut had stoked up controversy after she said that India attained real freedom only in 2014 when the Narendra Modi government came to power. She had described India’s independence in 1947 from the British as ‘bheek’ (alms). After her comment drew ire, Kangana had gone on to defend herself and said that she would return her Padma award if she is proven wrong. Amidst all this, veteran actor Vikram Gokhale on Sunday extended his support to Kangana Ranaut in her statement that India attained true independence only after 2014.
