NIA says the urban Naxals accused in the Elgar Parishad case are trying to confuse the court to delay trial

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has told the Bombay High Court that accused Sudha Bharadwaj and Gautam Navlakha, arrested for making alleged inflammatory speeches during December 2017 Elgar Parishad conclave in Pune, are trying to delay the trial of the case.

Sudha Bharadwaj and Gautam Navlakha are among the 15 urban naxals arrested by NIA for their role in instigating violence resulting in the Bhima-Koregaon violence, and planning an assassination plot of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The SP of Mumbai Branch of NIA, V Vikraman, who filed the affidavit before a division bench of Justice Nitin M Jamdar and Justice Sarang V Kotwal has said that both accused are trying to delay the trial by filing pleas on one ground or the other.

The NIA affidavit is in response to a fresh petition filed by Sudha Bharadwaj and Gautam Navlakha. They have demanded clone copies of the electronic devices such as hard disks seized from them.

They want framing of the charges to stay till they receive the clone copies of digital evidence and they have also accused that the digital evidence devices were tempered. Sudha Bharadwaj approached Bombay High Court after Special NIA Court in Mumbai on June 23 rejected her plea seeking cloned copies of electronic evidence. Gautam Navlakha has also filed similar petition before the High Court seeking a stay on trial till the cloned copies are provided by NIA.

However, the NIA has rebutted their allegations. The NIA said that the allegation of tempering is nothing but a fanciful submission and told the court that the accused are deliberately ‘mixing up and controverting crucial facts’ without any basis. NIA alleged that the Urban Maoists are doing this in order to confuse the court and to frustrate the trial proceedings. NIA said that digital evidences are examined by the experts of the Forensic Science Laboratory.

“Appeal praying for clone copies of electronic evidence under Section 207 of CrPC is going to be supplied to the accused persons. Five pending clone copies in respect of the electronic devices of the appellant and her co-accused are yet to be received from the FSL,” the affidavit said.

NIA opposed their demand for interim stay on proceeding and urged the court against such pleas of accused persons. As far as cloned copies of digital evidences are concerned, the NIA has told the court the same will be provided once they are received from Forensic Science Laboratory, Mumbai.

To all accused of this case, the NIA has provided certified hard copies of the documents that the agency has mentioned in its charge sheet. The NIA said that the agency is yet to receive five final reports related to the devices of Bharadwaj and Navlakha. And once NIA receives them same, it will be submitted to the special NIA court and both accused can obtain these documents under due process of law as laid down in the Criminal Procedure Code.

NIA said that the agency filed the chargesheet against the arrested accused on the basis of clinching evidence. It further informed that the High Court had rejected the plea of the accused on the admissibility of the evidence.

In the Elgaar Parishad case, the NIA had submitted the draft of the chargesheet before the special trial court on August 9. The probe agency has charged them under various sections of IPC and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act including terrorist, unlawful activities, conspiracy, membership of the banned organisation and raising funds for it, criminal conspiracy, waging or attempting to wage a war or abetting war against the Union government, sedition and promoting enmity.

Senior Advocate Yug Mohit Chaudhry appearing for Bharadwaj objected that trial should not be commenced till the accused are provided with cloned copies of the digital hard disc. He said that denying the copy is a violation of the right to a fair trial under Article 21 of the Constitution. NIA reminded her lawyer that the supply of a few pending electronic documents which are already relied on against the accused cannot be an alleged non-curable violation of fundamental rights.

NGO supported by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation was accused of bypassing Indian laws, causing death of tribal children and UPA govt didn’t do anything

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) has been renowned for philanthropic activities across the world, especially in underdeveloped and developing nations.

BMGF funds an NGO by the name of PATH (Programme for Appropriate Technology in Health) which runs several health programmes in India. However, in 2009, the same NGO was responsible for the death of 4 tribal children in the Khammam district of Andhra Pradesh (now Telangana), reported Great Game India.

PATH, which has received funds from BMGF to the tune of $2.5 billion between 1995 and May 2021, undertook the initiative to inoculate tribal children in Khammam with the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in 2009. The vaccination drive was conducted in four countries, namely, Uganda, Peru, Vietnam and India.

All these countries had a nationwide immunisation programme and were composed of a different ethnic population. For instance, Uganda had Negroid, Peru had Hispanics, Vietnam had Mongoloids while India had Indo-Aryans, Dravidians and tribals.

Since ethnicity is used as a marker for testing the safety and efficacy of certain vaccines, different ethnic groups were used for the project. The success of the vaccination drive would have meant its inclusion into the national immunisation program of the respective countries and large profit for the drug manufacturers.

The objective of the project was “to generate and disseminate evidence for informed public sector introduction of HPV vaccines.” During the project, PATH used the Gardasil vaccine by Merck & Co. to inoculate the tribal children.

Interestingly, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation had purchased $205 million dollar worth of stocks in pharmaceutical companies, including Merck in 2002. They held the shares in the company until June 2009 i.e. when the PATH project had reached its conclusion. It, therefore, made sense for BMGF to float HPV vaccines in India through the NGO.

Great Game India had reported, “By 2016, some 1,200 of the girls who had been subjects in the two HPV vaccine trials in India were reporting serious long-term side effects, more than 5% of the total cohort of 23,500. By then, the total number of deaths had risen to seven.”

Over 14,000 Indian girls were given the vaccine, a report by Great Game India stated. Merck’s attempts to force several European nations to include their vaccines in immunisation programmes was severely criticised by several European scientists who asserted that there is not enough data to suggest that it protects against multiple strains of the cancer-causing virus.

Findings of the Indian Parliament’s Standing Committee on Health

On Sunday (October 10), Vijay Patel, the founder of ‘Only Fact India’, shed light on how the Indian Parliament’s Standing Committee on Health exposed the PATH vaccination drive in a report in 2013.

The report noted that the vaccination trials were approved and facilitated by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) without paying heed to international ethical norms and rules. It emphasised how government funds, facilities and manpower was wasted to facilitate an inoculation programme of dubious nature.

The report further added that PATH misused the logo of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) without authorisation.

The Indian Parliament’s Standing Committee on Health found that PATH and ICMR have been in contact since October 2006. The report read, “An employee of PATH India sent an email to Deputy Director of National AIDS Research Institute, ICMR expressing sorrow that she could not travel to Seattle, United States for ‘Formative Research Workshop’ (on HPV vaccine scheduled for October 24-26, 2006).”

Screengrab of the report

Eventually, a meeting took place between the officials on both sides on October 13, 2006, where PATH and ICMR claimed that the HPV vaccine can prevent cervical cancer and HPV. Later, on November 16 that year, a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was shared by PATH officials that emphasised collaboration with ICMR in introducing HPV vaccine into the country’s Universal Immunization Programme.

The report pointed out, “The Committee feels that there was a serious dereliction of duty by many of the Institutions and individuals involved. The Committee observes that ICMR representatives, instead of ensuring the highest levels of ethical standards in research studies, apparently acted at the behest of the PATH in promoting the interests of manufacturers of the HPV vaccine.”

It further added, “It was unwise on the part of ICMR to go in the PPP (Public-Private Partnership) mode with PATH, as such as involvement gives rise to grave Conflict of interest. The Committee takes a serious view of the role of ICMR in the entire episode and is constrained to observe that ICMR should have been more responsible in the matter. The Committee strongly recommends that the Ministry may review the activities of ICMR functionaries involved in the PATH project.”

“To achieve this end effortlessly, without going through the arduous and strictly regulated route of clinical trials, PATH resorted to an element of subterfuge by calling the clinical trials ‘Observational Studies’ or ‘a Demonstration Project’ and various such expressions. Thus the interest, safety and well being of subjects were completely jeopardized by PATH by using self-determined and self-servicing nomenclature which is not only highly deplorable but also a serious breach of the law of the land,” stated the Indian Parliament’s Standing Committee on Health.

Conflict of interest, personal benefits and bypassing Indian laws

To its utmost surprise, the Indian Parliament’s Standing Committee on Health also found that Merck and Co. and Gardasil sponsored a vaccination trial at AIIMS to check whether two doses of the HPV vaccine was safe and effective instead of 3 doses. Without naming the official, the report stated, “Documents received by the Committee in connection with the examination of AIIMs also revealed that the individual in question availed the hospitality of these very sponsors during the said individual’s visit to Seoul to attend a conference.”

The Committee also found that the official also kept the FCRA application incomplete deliberately to withhold information. Another senior ICMR official who was the main link between the government body and PATH was also made an official Resource Person in the Enquiry Committee, instead of being summoned as a witness to answer questions. This exhibited how officials discharged their supposed duties despite the clear conflict of interest.

It had also come to light that PATH was running its office in India without proper authorisation and approval of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoH) and Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). “The Committee is concerned that if PATH can set up an office in India so easily without getting the required mandatory approvals/permissions. then individuals and entities inimical to the interest of the country can do the same…It is surprising that security and intelligence agencies did not raise an eyebrow on the way a foreign entity entered India virtually incognito through the backdoor,” the report concluded.

UPA and funding by Bill and Melinda Gates foundation

In his tweet, Vijay Patel, the founder of ‘Only Fact India’ pointed out how the PATH was not prosecuted for the death of 4 tribal children in the Khammam district of present-day Telangana.

Patel wrote, “But no action has been taken on any of these NGOs or individuals, for these unacceptable wrongdoings and Conflicts of Interest. Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) was the main NGO behind all these, so when I have checked their funding list I was shocked. and I think this could be the reason why there wasn’t any action against them.”

Vijay Patel showcased how the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation had committed grants to the tune of $9,30,125 (September 2012), $13,20,129 (November 2015), $39,10,529 (November 2015), and $42,87,102 (November 2015) to Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust. Besides, the foundation that funded PATH also committed a grant of $99,972 to the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation in September 2013. BMGF funded Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust and the then UPA government chose to not act against Merc and Co., PATH, despite the critical report by Indian Parliament’s Standing Committee on Health

Delhi govt bans Durga Puja idol immersions in public places, water bodies and Yamuna, directs devotees to immerse idols in buckets at home

There is no end to restrictions on Hindu festivals in the national capital Delhi by the Arvind Kejriwal led AAP govt. After banning Diwali firecrackers and Chhath Puja celebrations, the state govt has now banned idol immersions for the ongoing Durga Puja.

In an order issued by The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) on Wednesday, immersion of idols have been completely banned in public places and water bodies, including the heavily polluted Yamuna River, to prevent water pollution.

“On festive occasions such as Durga Pooja. etc., it has been a tradition to immerse idols in water bodies like rivers, lakes, ponds, wells etc. Consequent pollution of such water bodies has been a matter of concern. In addition to silting, toxic chemicals used in making idols tend to leach out and pose serious problems of water pollution. Studies carried out to assess deterioration m water quality due to idol immersion reveal deterioration of water quality in respect to conductivity, biochemical oxygen demand and heavy metal concentration,” the order issued by the chairman of the committee says.

The order states that Idol immersion will not be allowed during the “forthcoming” Durga Puja in any public place including River Yamuna or any other water body, public place, ponds, ghats etc. It says the Idol Immersion ritual may be performed in homes in a bucket/container etc. Those who violate the order by immersing idols in water bodies will be fined Rs 50,000 per default.

Interestingly, the order states Durga Puja is ‘forthcoming’ whereas the festival had already started before the order was issued yesterday, and is concluding tomorrow with the idol immersions.

The order also issues directions on how the idols should be made, when the idols were already made weeks ago and are scheduled for immersion tomorrow on the occasion of Vijaya Dashami. It says that idols should be made only from natural materials like traditional clay, and used of Backed clay, Plaster of Paris etc are prohibited.

The Delhi Pollution Control Committee order further directs the Delhi Police to check the entry of vehicles entering into Delhi carrying “prohibited idols” as their cargo.

Durga Puja Idol Immersion in River Yamuna was banned in Delhi in 2019 and 2020 also, but the river remains one of the most polluted rivers in the country.

‘Congress ran a Jungle Raj where Hindus were killed on Supari’: Karnataka CM Bommai to ex-CM Siddaramaiah

Former Karnataka Chief Minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah got into a Twitter spat with current CM Basavaraj Bommai demanding his resignation. Siddaramaiah alleged that there has been an increase in right-wing vigilantes in the state and expressed displeasure over Bommai’s justification for the same.

“Mr. @BSBommai, You have accepted your incapability to maintain law & order by justifying moral policing by few anti-social elements. Please resign & save Karnataka!!” said Siddaramaiah in his first Tweet against Bommai reacting to a statement given by the latter in media.

However, that is not where the attack stopped. Siddaramaiah in a bid to attack the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) leader in his following Tweets also took a jibe at the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) saying, “Appeasing RSS may be necessary to save your position, but you should not stoop to this low, Mr @BSBommai.”

“Do you have any plans to dissolve the police department, and hand over the law & order to RSS?” he Tweeted further.

Bommai hits back at Siddaramaiah

Replying to the Congress leader, Bommai said, “RSS is a tallest Nation-building Org, which treats every citizen equally unlike ur selective appeasement for votes, during calamities RSS works leading from the front, My Govt & my party works as per the constitution of India & not as per the extra-constitutional bodies like NAC (National Advisory Council).”

Replying to Siddaramaiah’s ‘jungle raj’ comment, CM Bommai stated, “Jungle Raj was when you were blind, deaf and dumb to the killings of Hindus under your tenure, in my administration, it’s the law which takes the action while in yours it was jungle raj hence Hindus were killed on supari and many riots took place.”

Further accusing Siddramaiah and Congress of promoting lawlessness, CM Bommai stated, “While you were the CM You became the icon of anti-Hindus by getting killed Hindu activists as Tippu Sultan did in his regime, I need not learn administration or policing from you, we have an able police force to tackle the law and order which was sitting Ducks under ur government.”

Left liberal ecosystem claims ‘Bommai justified moral policing’

Bommai while speaking at an event in Mangaluru when asked about the recent cases of moral policing in the state said, “This is a sensitive issue. We all have responsibilities in a society.”

“There are multiple sentiments in a society and people will need to function in a manner that does not hurt sentiments. When sentiments are hurt, there will normally be action and reaction,” the Karnataka CM said further.

Talking about social responsibility, Bommai said, “The responsibility of the government, apart from maintaining law and order, is to preserve social harmony. Everyone must cooperate. Some youths need to ensure that the sentiments of their society are not hurt. This is a social issue and we need morality in society. We cannot live without morality.”

“Today, we cannot live without morality. Peace in society and relationships are dependent on morality. When there is no morality there will be action and reaction. There is a responsibility on everyone and not just one section of society,” added Bommai.

However, the left-liberal and Congress ecosystem claimed that Bommai was justifying moral policing and initiated a cohesive attack against him.

Recent cases of so-called moral policing

Reportedly, police in Bagalkote district on Tuesday arrested eight people after a brawl between two Class IXth students got communal. Members of both Hindu and Muslim groups who belong to the same locality attacked each other.

There were allegations that one of the students objected to the other wearing a skull cap, however, the police has not confirmed the reason for what started the fight as yet.

The Hindustan Times in its report claimed that two other cases of alleged moral policing were reported on Monday from Dakshina Kannada and Shivamogga respectively. In the first case from Dakshina Kannada, two people of a right-wing outfit objected to two Hindu girls traveling with a Muslim couple.

Whereas, in the other case two youngsters were detained for allegedly assaulting a Hindu youth for dropping off a Muslim girl on his two-wheeler.

Human rights activists and organisations call Bommai’s statement ‘dangerous’

As many as 35 human rights activists and organisations released a statement on Wednesday calling Bommai’s remark “dangerous.”

“This statement has been made at a time when instances of communal policing have increased in Karnataka, which has in fact witnessed the killing of persons for the simple act of loving across caste and religion,” read the statement.

It is imperative to note that the case had nothing to do with any right-wing party or organization.

“Your statement that social morality is (to) be protected is not an innocent message. It sends out a dangerous message that as far as you are concerned, it is ok to use violence to enforce what some people see as ‘morality’,” the statement read further.

Giving it a spin as an ‘attack on minorities, Dalits and women,’ the statement claimed, “It condemns minorities and Dalits to lead the life of second class citizens. It also conveys the message that women have no right in choosing their partners. It is an attack on all women in fact. It also fills the minds of many youths among majority community with hate.”

The persecution continues in Noakhali: 150 Hindu families attacked over ‘Quran insult’ rumours as Bangladesh sees a bloodied Durga Puja

Brutal attacks, vandalism, looting, and arson have returned to haunt Hindus in Bangladesh’s Noakhali district, as close to 150 households have been reportedly attacked and at least three killed in a violent clash on Wednesday (October 13).

The incident took place after a Facebook rumour claiming ‘insult to Quran’ at a Durga Puja pandal went viral. Videos have emerged on social media where a mob of enraged Muslims are seen pelting stones and vandalising at makeshift Durga Puja pandals in Bangladesh and attacking Hindu families in Bangladesh’s Chandpur area.

A social media user from Bangladesh stated that the Islamic mob was calling for the burning of a local ISKCON temple.

Bangladeshi handles have stated that under the guise of attacks, rampant loot and molestation of women have also taken place. 2 persons have been found dead in the Chandpur area.

Taking a note of the recent incident of attack on minority Hindus in Bangladesh, West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari urged PM Modi and HM Amit Shah to take up “this painful & shameful issue with the Bangladeshi authorities diplomatically, & support the Sanatani Bengalis in this times of distress.”

Since yesterday, a Facebook post claiming Hindus put a copy of the Quran near a Durga Puja pandal to ‘insult’ it has been doing rounds on social media. Within hours of the Facebook posts circulating, mobs of local Muslims attacked the Cumilla Durga Puja pandal, damaged the idol and unleashed violence in the area. The Islamists claimed that the Hindus had deliberately kept their holy book in the pandal as a mark of insult.

Before one could know it, Islamic extremists took to the streets and vandalized temples in Chandpur’s Hajiganj, Chattogram’s Banshkhali, Chapainawabganj’s Shibganj and Cox’s Bazar’s Pekua and brutally attacked the Hindu devotees. 150 Hindu families were attacked. At least three Hindus have reportedly lost their lives in the ensuing ruckus.

Shibu Prasad Dutta, the general secretary of Cumilla Mahanagar Puja Udjapon Committee, informed that someone placed a copy of the Quran at a Durga Puja pavilion in Nanua Dighir Par early in the morning when no one was watching, as a deliberate act to create a rumour.

Hindus continue to face systematic persecution by radical Islamists in Bangladesh

Yesterday’s incident in Bangladesh was, however, not the first incidence of violence against the minority Hindus in the country, triggered by some stray social media post.

Similar to Pakistan, Hindus in Bangladesh have also witnessed unbridled attacks from the majority Muslims. For decades, the Hindu community in Bangladesh have been facing systematic persecution at the hands of the radical Islamists in the country.

In March this year, over 80 houses of Hindus in the village of Sunamganj, Bangladesh were attacked and vandalized by the supporters of Islamist group Hefazat-e-Islam. The attack was planned after a young Hindu man criticized Joint-Secretary General Maulana Mufti Mamunul Haque in a Facebook post as reported by Dhaka Tribune.

Following the brutal attack in the northeastern Sylhet division, Bangladesh, OpIndia chronicled as many as 11 more tragic tales of Hindus facing systematic persecution at the hands of the radical Islamists in Bangladesh over the last decade.

Noakhali riots

In fact, the tragic persecution of the Hindus in Bangladesh started with the 1946 genocide only to heighten during the Bangladesh Liberation War, when almost 3,000,000 Hindus were butchered in one of the biggest genocides of the century, continues until today.

In fact, one of the worst instances of Islamic onslaught against Hindus in Bengal was during the 1940s when calls for a separate Muslim nation were high. It was on 16th August 1946 that Direct Action Day was started and it is no coincidence that the 16th of August was the 18th Day of Ramzan.

These Noakhali riots were a series of semi-organized massacres, mass rapes, abductions and forced conversions of Hindus to Islam and looting and arson of Hindu properties perpetuated by the Muslim community in the districts of Noakhali in the Chittagong Division of Bengal (now Bangladesh) in October–November 1946.

The slaughter of Hindus began on October 10th, the day of the Kojagari Lakshmi Puja, and lasted for almost a week. It is estimated that 5,000 were killed and hundreds of Hindu women were brutally raped. Thousands of men and women belonging to the Hindu community were forced to convert their religion. The forcibly converted Hindus were coerced to give written declarations that they had converted to Islam of their own free will.

What is shocking is that these Noakhali riots were orchestrated by some of the most powerful Muslim leaders who went on to hold the reigns of Pakistan. These include Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy who was the then Chief Minister of Bengal and went on to become the Prime Minister of Pakistan.

‘Is it a festival celebration or mourning?’ Delhi firecracker traders lash out at Kejriwal govt for again banning firecrackers during Diwali

0

While Delhi stares at another season of air pollution caused by stubble burning by farmers along with several man-made and natural factors, the administration has again started a crackdown on the Hindu festival Diwali by banning firecrackers in the name of controlling pollution. The Delhi Police on Wednesday arrested one Mohammad Rihan (21), a native of Uttar Pradesh from Delhi’s Sadar Bazar area after more than 470 kg of illegal firecrackers were recovered from his godown in a raid.

With this, the Delhi Police has initiated a crackdown on the sale and distribution of firecrackers this festive season after the Kejriwal-led government imposed a complete ban on the sale and bursting of all forms of firecrackers till January 1, 2022.

The ‘environmentally conscious’ decision taken just weeks ahead of Diwali has wreaked havoc in the lives of small firecracker manufacturers and traders.

Firecracker sellers bash the Delhi govt for reckless decision

Harjeet Singh Chabbra, General Secretary of Firecracker Association in Delhi’s Sadar Bazar, in an interview to a local news channel lashed out at the Delhi government saying, “If Diwali will not be celebrated in India then do we expect it to be celebrated in Pakistan?”

Chabbra further said that he has never witnessed such conditions and bans in his 20 years of career. “Are we celebrating a festival or mourning someone’s death? We have to beg the Supreme Court to allow us to sell crackers on Diwali living in India,” said the visibly upset trader.

“The government imposes a ban but does not consider the impact it will have on the families of the manufacturers, traders and sellers,” said Chabbra.

Lamenting at the reckless imposition of a ban on the sale of crackers, Chabbra said, “The government should instead ban the manufacturing of crackers so the question of selling crackers will not arise. They got us to manufacture green crackers by getting an order from the Supreme Court and now they have imposed a ban on those too.”

“They did the same last year. They first dispense license to the cracker sellers and then ban it after 12 or 15 days. The ones with permanent licenses stock up months prior to the festival. What are they supposed to do with all the stock?” questioned the firecracker seller.

Criticizing Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal’s politics, Chabbra said, “He (Kejriwal) should not be running to Punjab when he cannot handle Delhi. They have the entire year to work on the issue of stubble burning, but the only solution they have to curb pollution is to ban firecrackers.” He asked, “does bursting cracker on a single day result in pollution for the entire year?”

He also slammed the government for installing a non-functional smog tower using taxpayers’ money.

Some other sellers sitting in and around the shop questioned the government that how is just a single-day festival responsible for causing pollution in the capital city.

“Do you think people will not burst crackers? People will procure them from neighbouring cities like Noida and Ghaziabad so why should the traders and sellers of only Delhi suffer?” asked one seller.

“We celebrate Diwali as a mark to welcome Lord Shri Ram. On one side a temple is being built for Him in Ayodhya and on the other, you are imposing a ban on the sale and bursting of crackers,” said another trader asserting that this decision is a direct assault on Hindu festivals and tradition.

‘Covid just a reason to impose ban’

Ramdas, another cracker seller at Jama Masjid cracker market said, “Covid has just become a reason for the government to ban the sale of crackers. We had resumed work just a few months ago and this ban will ensure our end.”

Deepak Jain, yet another shopkeeper selling crackers said that they have lost their means of earning with the ban. “We have been celebrating Diwali bursting crackers for years. But it is all finished now,” said Jain.

Another trader from Jama Masjid revealed that the crackers put up for sale in the market were all eco-friendly and manufactured as per government guidelines. “Imposing a ban on crackers is just a convenient excuse for the government to show that they are taking steps to curb air pollution,” he said.

SC dumped report suggesting crackers don’t cause much pollution

The Supreme Court in July had dismissed a petition challenging the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) order on the ban on the sale of firecrackers. While dismissing the petition, the apex court had also dumped a study by IIT Kanpur which had shown that firecrackers are not among the top pollutants.

Advocate Sai Deepak representing an individual seller had argued that an IIT-Kanpur report does not list firecrackers even in the list of top 15 contributors to air pollution.

However, the court refused to accept the IIT study, saying they don’t need IIT to know that firecrackers cause pollution. Justice Khanwilkar lashed out at the study saying, “Do you need IIT to understand that firecrackers impact your health? Ask someone staying in Delhi what happens during Diwali.”

Industry to suffer losses as multiple states ban firecrackers

Not just Delhi, but even states like Odisha and Rajasthan have imposed a ban on the sale of firecrackers. Manufacturers in the firecracker town of Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu, which produces over 90 per cent of firecrackers in the country, have predicted a loss of around Rs 500 crore this year due to the ban in these states.

Sivakasi-based T Kannan, Director of Sree Balaji Fireworks, in a statement to media, said, “The production this year is only 50 per cent of last year. Around Rs 3,000-crore worth of firecrackers were produced in 2020 and this year it would be around Rs 1,500 crore. After the ban, the impact would be around Rs 500 crore losses.”

“If the ban continues for the coming years, we wouldn’t have any definite policy to manufacture. We were not prepared for the ban from these states. Firecrackers create pollution in the mind of people and not much in reality,” he added.

Nora Fatehi, Jacqueline Fernandez summoned by ED in Rs 200 crore cheating and money laundering case

0

On October 14, Enforcement Department questioned actress-dancer Nora Fatehi again today in a money laundering case. The questioning is being done reportedly in connection to the Sukesh Chandrashekhar-linked alleged multi-crore extortion racket.

Responding to a summon issued by the ED, Nora Fatehi arrived at the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office to join the investigation in the Sukesh Chandrashekhar case.

ED has also summoned Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez for tomorrow in connection with the case. Earlier also ED had questioned Jacqueline Fernandez as well as a witness in the case. Fernandez was questioned for around four hours in August, and her statement was recorded under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Fernandez was again questioned in September. The investigating agency is looking into if Fernandez or any other actor was beneficiary in the 200-crore money laundering case. She is scheduled to appear before ED again on October 15.

The cases involving Sukesh Chandrashekhar and Leena Paul

Sukesh and his alleged wife Leena Paul are accused of alleged criminal conspiracy, cheating, and extortion of about Rs 200 crore from former Fortis Healthcare promoter Shivinder Singh’s wife, Aditi Singh. They had allegedly promised her that they could get Singh out of jail. Chandrashekhar is also an accused in the Election Commission (EC) bribery case of 2017 in which he had allegedly paid money to get the AIADMK ‘two leaves’ symbol for the Sasikala faction in a by-election in Tamil Nadu. Sukesh is currently lodged in Rohini Jail, Delhi.

Sukesh Chandrashekhar is also accused of duping several people by promising them jobs. Posing as a relative of a politician, he reportedly duped more than 100 people and cheated them to the tune of Rs 75 crore. Sukesh and Leena Paul were arrested in 2011 in a cheating case, but he resumed his activities after his release on bail. Once he had taken Rs 20 lakh from Kerala based businessman promising to bring actor Katrina Kaif for a promotional event, but bought brought Telugu actor Allu Arjun instead.

On August 23, during the raid, ED recovered Rs 82.5 lakh in cash, 2kg gold, 16 luxury cars and other luxury items from a luxurious beach bungalow located in Chennai linked to Sukesh.

No faith in Lord Ram, Krishna, to no Pind Daan and no puja by Brahmins: The ‘Great Conversion’ and 22 vows of Ambedkar

On October 14, 1956, Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar converted from Hinduism to Buddhism. It is believed that this date is associated with Emperor Ashoka’s conversion to Buddhism. The day is also known as the Great Conversion or Mass Conversion or Dharma Deeksha. Approximately 3,80,000 people belonging to so-called ‘lower castes’ among Hindus embraced Buddhism on that day in Nagpur, Maharashtra. Notably, the city is associated with Buddhist folklore and history. The day is celebrated as Dhamma Chakra Pravartan Din.

On the next day, the latecomers to the event were also converted to Buddhism. The total number of people converted during the Great conversion stands somewhere around 6,00,000 to 8,00,000 based on different reports. Deekshabhoomi, a sacred monument, was constructed at the place where the event happened.

While converting to Buddhism, Dr Ambedkar took 22 vows. In these vows, he promised to have no faith in the Hindu belief system and vowed to disown any religions or religious practices linked to Tridev, Ram, Krishna, and other Hindu Gods and Goddesses. I shall have no faith in Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh nor shall I worship them. The vows read:

  1. I shall have no faith in Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara, nor shall I worship them.
  2. I shall have no faith in Rama and Krishna who are believed to be the incarnation of God nor shall I worship them.
  3. I shall have no faith in ‘Gauri’, Ganapati and other gods and goddesses of Hindus nor shall I worship them.
  4. I do not believe in the incarnation of God.
  5. I do not and shall not believe that Lord Buddha was the incarnation of Vishnu. I believe this to be sheer madness and false propaganda.
  6. I shall not perform ‘Shraddha’ nor shall I give ‘pind-dan’.
  7. I shall not act in a manner violating the principles and teachings of the Buddha.
  8. I shall not allow any ceremonies to be performed by Brahmins.
  9. I shall believe in the equality of man.
  10. I shall endeavour to establish equality.
  11. I shall follow the ‘noble eightfold path’ of the Buddha.
  12. I shall follow the ‘paramitas’ prescribed by the Buddha.
  13. I shall have compassion and loving-kindness for all living beings and protect them.

On December 6, 1956, six weeks after Dharma Deeksha, Dr Ambedkar died in his sleep at his home in Delhi. He had been suffering from heart disease and diabetes since 1948.

Kejriwal wants to allow Chhath Puja but Sisodia seeks guidelines from Centre: How the blame-credit game will pan out

If there is one person one can learn how to have their cake and eat it too it is Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. On October 14, 2021, Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party head Arvind Kejriwal took to Twitter to announce that he has urged Delhi LG to allow the Chhatth Puja celebrations in November this year.

He claimed that COVID has been in control and many states have allowed the celebrations. This is quite contrary to the request made by Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia. Interestingly, the ban on celebrations on Chhath Puja in Delhi was announced by the AAP govt itself, but now the CM is requesting the governor to lift the ban.

On September 30, the Delhi govt had imposed a ban on holding Chhath Puja in public places, while relaxing the restrictions on gatherings till November 15 in view of other festivals. After the opposition BJP had opposed the ban, CM Arvind Kejriwal had asked them not to do politics over the issue, saying that restrictions imposed on Chhath Puja celebrations are only to safeguard people from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Even on October 8, Arvind Kejriwal had refused to roll back the ban on Chhath Puja celebrations in public, and had said that the opposition is doing dirty politics over the issue. “We want people to celebrate all the festivals. During Chhath puja devotees are required to wade into water. If one Covid infected person gets into water, the entire water will get infected. It could lead to fast spread of coronavirus. Keeping the health of the people in mind we have taken this step,” Kejriwal had said, justifying his government’s decision to impose the ban.

On 12th October, Sisodia wrote to Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya to issue guidelines for celebrating the Chhath festival. What is amusing is that just few days prior to this, Delhi government had on its own banned firecrackers on Diwali.

On 15th September, Kejriwal took to Twitter to announce a complete ban on procurement, storage and sale of firecrackers for Diwali keeping in mind ‘air pollution’. This is despite the fact that scientific studies have shown that firecrackers contribute little to pollution and the bigger culprit is the stubble burning in the neighbouring state of Punjab which adds to Delhi pollution woes.

However, while Delhi government on its own had decided to ban firecrackers for Diwali. But for Chhath Puja, first, they banned it, after that, they wrote to the Central government and LG. Here is how Kejriwal has played a dirty political game over Hindu festivals:

Chhath Puja in Delhi

Chhath Puja is celebrated mostly in Bihar and Purvanchal area of Eastern Uttar Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh goes to polls early next year. Many people from UP and Bihar stay in Delhi, which is why the celebration of Chhath Puja has gained prominence in Delhi too. However, in a poll-bound state, where Aam Aadmi Party wants to contest elections, Chhath Puja is being used as a political tool.

It is clear that if Delhi government on its own can decide for Diwali it can also decide for Chhath Puja. But it did not. Because, vote bank politics. If Central government issues guidelines and issues restrictions as part of COVID protocol, Kejriwal would blame Centre for not paying heed to sentiments of people from Purvanchal, part of UP. But if LG does allow celebration of Chhath Puja, Kejriwal would swoop in and take credit for the same.

A true politician.

Holy Book Vs Facebook: Islamists in Bangladesh damage Durga Puja pandals, attack Hindus over a rumour of ‘insult to Quran’

The Hindus in Bangladesh labelled October 13 as a ‘Black Day’ after a stray Facebook post triggered widespread violence against the minority community in Bangladesh.

Several Durga pandals were vandalized, close to 150 families were attacked and at least three Hindus were reportedly killed in the violent clash after a Facebook post claiming ‘insult to Quran’ at a pandal went viral on social media on Wednesday.

The Islamic extremists immediately took to the streets and vandalized temples in Chandpur’s Hajiganj, Chattogram’s Banshkhali, Chapainawabganj’s Shibganj and Cox’s Bazar’s Pekua and brutally attacked the Hindu devotees.

Facebook post claimed Hindus ‘insulted Quran by placing it in pandal

Reportedly, videos and photos of the Quran kept in a Durga Pandal of Cummila were circulated widely on social media. The Islamists claimed that the Hindus had deliberately kept their holy book in the pandal as a mark of insult.

However, denying the claims of insulting the Quran, Shibu Prasad Dutta, the general secretary of Cumilla Mahanagar Puja Udjapon Committee, informed that someone placed a copy of the Quran at a Durga Puja pavilion in Nanua Dighir Par early in the morning when no one was watching, as a deliberate act to create a rumour.

The same was confirmed by a district official who said, “The miscreants took some pictures of this and ran away. Within a few hours, using Facebook, the propaganda spread like wildfire with the provocative pictures.”

He hinted at the involvement of some  Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islam workers.

Local Muslim boy shares Facebook post hinting at planned conspiracy

A local Muslim boy named Kazi Tanim who is supposedly an eyewitness, took to Facebook to narrate the incident.

Tanim in his post said that he stays next to the Durga Pandal installed at Camilla. He shared that though a Hindu-dominated area, both the communities had been living peacefully since years in the area with even Muslims visiting the pandal during the festival.

He further revealed that the pandal is devoid of any devotees post 4 PM and was deserted on Tuesday night after the aarti as usual. No person guards the pandal especially at night as the area has always remained peaceful.

Tanim, however, said several police vehicles visited the pandal before the violence broke out. They interrogated a bunch of boys standing around the pandal suspecting the administration had received some inputs well before the social media post went viral. No action was taken by the police or administration said Tanim.

He also informed that the Quran was kept in a way that it was easily visible to any passerby, plausibly with an intention to incite communal disharmony. He said by the time the priest arrived and requested the Quran to be removed, a mob had gathered to stop puja and the pandal was vandalized.

He asserted that no Hindu would deliberately place a Quran in a Durga Pandal and that it was done purposely to flare communal tensions. He also requested for thorough investigation at the end of his post.

‘Too little, too late’

If the Facebook post by the user named Tanim is to be believed, then too little was done by the administration to curb this well-planned attack on Hindus in Bangladesh despite receiving intel.

Several locals took to Twitter to share the visuals of the brutal attacks and widespread vandalism of Hindu temples and pandals on the divine occasion of Navratri.

Telecoms Minister Mustafa Jabbar had said that steps were taken to pull down the posts and videos immediately. “We’ve requested the removal of more than 100 Facebook links. We hope they will be blocked soon,” informed Jabbar claiming that the ministry was in touch with Facebook officials.

However, several Hindus and their pandals have already come under attack by then.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (Overall) Shahadat Hossain also informed that a three-member committee has been constituted to investigate the matter further.

Village burnt after a Hindu boy criticized Maulana on social media

This is not the first time that a social media post was used as an excuse to attack Hindus.

A young Hindu man from Noagaon, Shalla Upazila was reportedly enraged by Mawlana Mamunul Haque’s speech at an event and made a Facebook post criticizing it.

Upon discovering the post, Hefazat leaders staged a protest on Tuesday night alleging attempts to incite communal violence. The police had arrested the boy the same evening to bring the situation under control. Yet several thousand members of Hefazat-e-Islam attacked the boy’s village with makeshift weapons. Their excuse was, the insult to the Maulana was the same as insult to Islam.

Authorities busy blaming Facebook

While attacks on Hindus and Hindu places of worship is nothing new in Bangladesh, after the current violence against Durga Puja pandals, many in the Bangladesh government and other ‘intellectuals’ are busy blaming the social media platform Facebook, not the actual perpetrators who did the violence.

Bangladesh Telecom Minister Mustafa Jabbar keeps highlighting how they are trying to take down the Facebook posts and communicating with Facebook to curb the rumours. A report in BDNews24 says, “Many online activists questioned the authenticity of the incident, calling for calm and criticising Facebook and Bangladesh authorities for their failure to take down the posts.”

But the thing is, is Facebook responsible for the violence? There are several other modes of communication when a community wants to attack another community. Facebook here is a mere tool, rather an excuse of a tool to perpetuate another spout of violence against the Hindu community that has been facing a regular onslaught of attacks for decades, be it in India, Pakistan, or Bangladesh.

Islamic mob set police stations on fire in Bengaluru over Facebook post

Islamic extremists in the month of August last year had gone on a rampage and unleashed extreme violence in Bengaluru over a Facebook post that was allegedly derogatory to Prophet Mohammad.

The Muslim mob hit the streets near DJ Halli and KG Halli police station areas and attacked a Congress MLA’s house after one of his relatives had allegedly made a derogatory Facebook post.

Over a 100 people armed with sticks, iron rods, sharp metal objects and other weapons had gathered around the residence of Congress MLA Akhanda Srinivasamurthy.

The angry Muslim pelted stones and torched vehicles, ATMs, shops near the locality while protesting against the alleged derogatory post made by one of the relatives of Dalit Congress MLA Akhanda Shrinivasamurthy.

Social media posts of few people involved in the mob violence indicated that the riots could have been pre-planned as calls for the mobilisation of Muslims were allegedly made on social media platforms.

it is astonishing how the Muslim mobs ensue widespread riots and damage minutes within social media posts getting viral.

Claims of blasphemy: The tools are different, but the victims are always the same, non-Muslims

Be it the Bengaluru riots over an alleged Facebook post by Naveen, or the attack on a Krishna Temple of the impoverished Hindu community in Sindh on the day of Janmashtami, the attacks on Durga Puja pandals in Bangladesh, or the death sentence given to Asiya Bibi, Islamists in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh have always found excuses to attack, maim and kill non-Muslims.

The claims of ‘blasphemy’ are often blurred and confusing. Someone claims someone had seen the targeted person destroying pages of the Quran, someone just places a copy of the Quran at a place where it was allegedly not supposed to be, or someone even just points a finger at a victim and says, ‘Look, a blasphemer, let’s kill him’, and all hell breaks loose.

Recently in Pakistan, an 8-year-old Hindu boy was made a scapegoat and was accused of ‘insulting Islam’, because he had allegedly urinated at the wrong place out of fear.

Just last month, Islamists in Bangladesh had destroyed 4 Hindu temples and attacked a Hindu religious procession, just because it happened to pass near a mosque. In March this year, Islamists had screamed ‘Direct Action’ and had attacked Hindu Temples, just because PM Modi was visiting Dhaka.

In 2020, just in the single month of May, Islamists had attacked and vandalized at least 10 temples in Bangladesh.

Is it Facebook’s fault that a community is always geared up to kill and destroy places of worship of another community?
