Centre extends BSF’s operational area in Punjab, West Bengal and Assam, Congress and TMC objects while Captain Amarinder Singh supports the move

The Union Ministry of Home & Affairs has amended its July 3, 2014 notification to extend the jurisdiction of Border Security Forces (BSF) from existing 15 km to 50 km inside the international border in Assam, West Bengal and Punjab which share borders with Bangladesh and Pakistan respectively.

The BSF was raised in December 1965 as a specialized force to guard India’s international border.

The decision was taken in the wake of an increasing number of cases of cattle and drug smuggling and Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) racket alongside the international borders. Drug and arms smuggling has emerged as a new challenge in Punjab whereas Assam and West Bengal are the hotbeds of cattle smuggling, FICN, and illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya migration.

The ministry, empowered under Section 139 of the Border Security Force Act 1968 to revise operational areas of BSF, has said that it will improve the operational efficiency of the BSF to crack down on smuggling rackets.

As per the gazette notification issued on Monday, BSF will now have the power to carry search, seizure and arrest within 50 km from the borders in these states under Acts namely Criminal Procedure Code, Passport Act, NDPS Act and Customs Act. BSF has been given similar power of search and arrest in other North-Eastern states namely Mizoram, Tripura, Manipur, Nagaland and Meghalaya besides UTs of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

On the other hand, the jurisdiction of BSF in Gujarat has been reduced from 80 km to 50 km and no change has been made in Rajasthan where BSF continues to guard 50 km radius area.

The basic idea was to bring uniformity in the area of operation in states sharing international borders. The vast swathe of Gujarat sharing the international border is the Rann of Kutch, which is uninhabited, hence such a large operational area is not required.

But as usual, Punjab and West Bengal ruled by the Congress and Trinamool Congress (TMC) have started protesting the decision as an attack on federalism and interference through Central agencies.

“I strongly condemn the GoI’s unilateral decision to give additional powers to BSF within the 50 km belt running along the international borders, which is a direct attack on federalism. I urge the Union Home Minister to immediately roll back this irrational decision,” Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi tweeted.

Congress MP Manish Tewari wondered that by this decision “half of Punjab will now fall under BSF jurisdiction”. Punjab Home Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa said that an internal emergency has been imposed and the patriotism of Punjabis is doubted.

Former Punjab Chief Minister Caption Amarinder Singh rebuffs Punjab CM and Congress

But former Punjab Chief Minister Caption Amarinder Singh rubbished these allegations and asked the chief minister and the Congress party not to drag central forces into politics.

He said that the enhanced power and presence of BSF will save Punjab and make the state stronger. Our soldiers are being killed in Kashmir. We are seeing more and more weapons and drugs being pushed by Pak-backed terrorists into Punjab. Let’s not drag central armed forces into politics,” he said

Captain Amarinder Singh’s media advisor Raveen Thukral posted two tweets back to back on his behalf making it clear that the he stands with security forces.

He further said, “Partisan considerations can’t & shouldn’t dictate our stand on issues of national security. I’d said that at the time of the 2016 surgical strikes & am saying it again. We’ve to rise above politics when India’s security is at stake, as it is now.”

West Bengal Transport Minister Firhad Hakim accused the federal structure of the country has been violated by extending the operational area of BSF. He said that law and order is a state subject which the Central government is trying to interfere with through central agencies.

However, there are obvious reasons as the Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her party have been opposing the Indian Army, BSF, CRPF and any other central security agencies. In December 2016 she had staged 33 hours long political drama on a normal security exercise of the Indian Army. Besides, her government has been accused of protecting illegal immigration, cattle smuggling and likes.

Uttar Pradesh: Congress leader Haseeb Ahmed and Irshad Ullah hurl mother-sister abuses over samosa distribution, watch video

While some may joke about waging wars for samosa, Congress leaders in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj literally got into a fight over the deep fried delicacy.

Note: Abusive language, discretion advised.

The incident took place on October 6 when the Congress leaders and workers were protesting against Priyanka Gandhi’s arrest and the Lakhimpur incident. As they were disrupting the traffic, the Police detained them and took them to Police Line. At the Police Station, Congress Secretary, Prayagraj, Irshad Ullah, brought Samosas to distribute among the party workers. He noticed district spokesperson Haseeb Ahmed took three samosas and confronted him. The argument went out of hand, and they started abusing each other.

Congress’s General Secretary, Nafees Anwar, tried to calm down the situation and warned the leaders that they were not at home. However, they continued their fight. The Police had to intervene and stop them.

SP City, Dinesh Kumar Singh said in a statement that the Police had detained Congress workers as they were protesting on the road. While they were at Police Line, a few of them started fighting over some issue. FIR has been registered against them.

That is not all, Congress leaders have now extended their support to the party workers who fought over the samosa.

On October 14, Congress leader and national media panellist for the party, Surendra Rajput, got irked over a tweet by Bharatiya Janata Party’s state spokesperson for Uttar Pradesh, Rakesh Tripathi, in which he had shared a video of Congress leaders fighting over Samosas in Prayagraj. Tripathi had written, “Congress leaders got angry after seeing three samosas in another Congress leader’s hands. They abused and assaulted each other. Now a case has been filed. Poor Congressi.”

Rajput expressed his displeasure over the tweet and said, “You are fighting for crores of rupees. You are fighting to sell the country. We are only fighting over samosas.” He further demanded that the BJP government should have provided food for the protesters. He added, “You are earning a lot. This was the least you could have done.”

Amused by the demand, Tripathi quoted Rajput’s tweet and said in Hindi, “Let’s have a party in such a way, I will bring samosas, and you arrange for the tea.”

Speaking to OpIndia, Tripathi said, “Congress Party is disappointed and desperate. Whenever it comes in power, it loots from the general public. It has been almost 32 years since Congress had ruled Uttar Pradesh. However, Congress’ character has not changed. It is noteworthy that they cannot even tolerate more samosas in someone’s plate and try to loot them. It was visible in their own program when Congress workers fought as one of them had more samosas. The proverb ‘Even though the rope is burnt, the strength is still intact’ fits perfectly in this scenario”

Congress leader Haseeb Ahmed was recently in news after his old video of asking Mahatma Gandhi to ‘come back’ went viral on Gandhi Jayanti on October 2.

A dejected Ahmed can be seen crying as he delivers an emotional monologue while his ’emotionless’ assistant holds on to Bapu’s portrait. Three other supporters stand behind the emotional Congress leader looking quite clueless. One of them, in fact, is also seen grinning for the camera.

Weeping profusely, he told Bapu to come back. “Bapu aap aajaiye. Is desh ko aapki zarurat dobara padh rahi hain. Is desh ki janta aapko dobara dekhna chahti hain. Ya toh hum logon ko aap apne paas bula lijiye, ya is desh main jo jhoot, makkari aur fareb karke logon ko lutne ka kaam kar rahe hain unse hum logo ko mukti dila dijiye,” he cried.

In January 2020, he was found crying at a graveyard, praying to his buried ancestors to prove his citizenship as protest to Citizenship Amendment Act. It is imperative to note that the CAA is not applicable to Indian citizens and if Ahmed is an Indian citizen, he would not be required to prove his citizenship. He has also created awesome posters for Priyanka Gandhi. Read about them in detail here.

On the 65th anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar’s conversion to Buddhism, read what he thought of Islam and the Muslims in India

14 October 2021 marks the 65th anniversary of the day when the chief architect of India’s Constitution Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar undertook one of the biggest decisions of his life-giving up Hinduism and embracing Buddhism. He along with close to 3,65,000 of his supporters gathered at Deekshabhoomi, Nagpur, and renounced their faith to take up Buddhism.

Ambedkar was born into a Mahar (Dalit) caste, who were treated as untouchables and subjected to socio-economic discrimination. To bring an end to this predicament, Ambedkar decided to relinquish Hinduism and adopt another faith. After contemplating for over 2 decades on which religion dovetailed perfectly with his requirements, he homed in on Buddhism and converted to the said religion on 14 October 1956.

But before he decided which faith would he choose, Ambedkar was certain about one thing: His religion of conversion would be from the Indian soil and not the one that had its roots elsewhere. He had deeply analysed the Abrahamic faiths at that time and concluded that their homogeneity and monotheistic principles did not fit with the diverse and pluralistic nature of the Indian society.

Among the three Abrahamic faiths, Ambedkar was most critical of Islam. It is a travesty of history then that BR Ambedkar, whose mortifying critiques of the caste system is routinely cited by ‘liberals’ to scorn and deride Hinduism, but whose trenchant criticism of Islam, and more specifically the history of Muslims in India, have received little critical scrutiny and has been swept under the carpet.

One of the enduring traits of Babasaheb Ambedkar was his forthrightness and his unapologetic expression of his opinions. He did not flinch from speaking his mind out, often weighing in on complex issues that politicians at that time studiously avoided.

For instance, the criticism of Islam was considered a political hot potato then and even after decades of India’s independence, but that did not deter Babasaheb Ambedkar from expressing his strident views on the Islamic doctrines and beliefs.

Ambedkar’s scathing views on Islam and Muslims in India

A compendium of Ambedkar’s thoughts on Islam and Muslims in India could be found in the seminal book ‘Pakistan Or The Partition Of India‘, first published in 1940, with subsequent editions in 1945 and 1946. The book, a collection of his writings and speeches, lays bare a staggering account of what Ambedkar thought about Islam.

Those thoughts have the potential of earning him the tag of “Islamophobic” by radical Islamists today.

In crude and lucid language, Ambedkar expounded that Islam was a divisive religion, a faith that segregated people into rigid groups of Muslims and non-Muslims, where the benefits of brotherhood and fraternity were limited only to the former, i.e Muslims, while the latter was treated with contempt and enmity.

“Hinduism is said to divide people and in contrast, Islam is said to bind people together. This is only a half-truth. For Islam divides as inexorably as it binds. Islam is a close corporation and the distinction that it makes between Muslims and non-Muslims is a very real, very positive and very alienating distinction. The brotherhood of Islam is not the universal brotherhood of man. It is a brotherhood of Muslims for Muslims only. There is a fraternity, but its benefit is confined to those within that corporation. For those who are outside the corporation, there is nothing but contempt and enmity,” BR Ambedkar wrote in ‘Pakistan or Partition of India.

Ambedkar also elucidated the incompatibility of Islam with local self-government. Underscoring the Islamic ideology of Muslim Ummah, Ambedkar said loyalty of a Muslim is not based on his domicile in the country but on the faith to which he belongs. Islam, according to BR Ambedkar, could have never allowed a true Muslim to adopt India as his motherland. For that to happen, the establishment of Islamic rule was imperative.

This was a bleak possibility given that India was a Hindu majority nation. Therefore, he concluded that for a Musalman, India could never be his motherland. This, of course, was the cornerstone of the two-nation theory propounded by the Muslim League, which inevitably led to the partition of the country.

The second defect of Islam is that it is a system of social self-government and is incompatible with local self-government because the allegiance of a Muslim does not rest on his domicile in the country which is his but on the faith to which he belongs. To the Muslim ibi bene ibi patria [Where it is well with me, there is my country] is unthinkable. Wherever there is the rule of Islam, there is his own country. In other words, Islam can never allow a true Muslim to adopt India as his motherland and regard a Hindu as his kith and kin.”

‘For a Musalman, loyalty to faith trumps his loyalty to the country’: BR Ambedkar on the question of Muslim allegiance to India

On the question of Muslim loyalty to his country vis-a-vis his loyalty to Islam, Ambedkar wrote:

“Among the tenets, one that calls for notice is the tenet of Islam which says that in a country which is not under Muslim rule, wherever there is a conflict between Muslim law and the law of the land, the former must prevail over the latter, and a Muslim will be justified in obeying the Muslim law and defying the law of the landThe only allegiance a Musalman, whether civilian or soldier, whether living under a Muslim or under a non-Muslim administration, is commanded by the Koran to acknowledge is his allegiance to God, to His Prophet and to those in authority from among the Musalmans…”

Ambedkar opined that the teaching of the Holy Quran rendered the existence of a stable government almost impossible. However, he was more alarmed by the Muslim tenets that prescribed when a country is a motherland to the Muslims and when it is not.

According to Muslim Canon Law, the world is divided into two camps, Dar-ul-lslam (abode of Islam), and Dar-ul-Harb (abode of war). A country is Dar-ul-Islam when it is ruled by Muslims. A country is Dar-ul-Harb when Muslims only reside in it but are not rulers of it. That being the Canon Law of the Muslims, India cannot be the common motherland of the Hindus and the Musalmans. It can be the land of the Musalmans—but it cannot be the land of the ‘Hindus and the Musalmans living as equals.’ Further, it can be the land of the Musalmans only when it is governed by the Muslims. The moment the land becomes subject to the authority of a non-Muslim power, it ceases to be the land of the Muslims. Instead of being Dar-ul-lslam, it becomes Dar-ul-Harb,” he said.

As per Islamic teachings, the world was divided into a binary setting: Muslim and non-Muslim countries. This division, Ambedkar explained, was the premise of the extremist concept of Islamic Jihad. The appellation used to describe non-Muslim lands, Dar-ul-Harb, which roughly translates to Land of War, is another testament to the bigotry promoted against the non-believers.

‘To Muslims of India, a Hindu is a Kaffir and therefore, undeserving of respect and equal treatment’: BR Ambedkar

The Muslim Canon Law made it incumbent upon Muslim rulers to convert Dar-ul-Harb into Dar-ul-Islam. This ideology was the cornerstone of the numerous crusades that Islamic invaders from the middle east carried out to conquer India starting from around the 9-10th century.

In fact, this ideology powers Jihad even today when thousands of Islamic terrorists around the world carry on with their crusade against non-believers, whom they pejoratively refer to as Kuffars or Kaffirs. How Muslims were instructed to convert Dar-ul-Harb into Dar-ul-Islam was summarised by Ambedkar as:

“…It might also be mentioned that Hijrat [emigration] is not the only way of escape to Muslims who find themselves in a Dar-ul-Harb. There is another injunction of Muslim Canon Law called Jihad (crusade) by which it becomes “incumbent on a Muslim ruler to extend the rule of Islam until the whole world shall have been brought under its sway. The world, being divided into two camps, Dar-ul-Islam (abode of Islam), Dar-ul-Harb (abode of war), all countries come under one category or the other. Technically, it is the duty of the Muslim ruler, who is capable of doing so, to transform Dar-ul-Harb into Dar-ul-Islam.” And just as there are instances of the Muslims in India resorting to Hijrat, there are instances showing that they have not hesitated to proclaim Jihad,” Christophe Jaffrelot quoted Dr BR Ambedkar as saying in his book ‘Dr Ambedkar and Untouchability: Analysing and Fighting Caste‘.

Addressing the question of Muslim obedience to a Hindu majority government at the centre, Ambedkar opined that it is an improbable prospect to expect Muslims to accept the authority of a government ruled by a Hindu majority because for them Hindus are Kaffirs and therefore, unworthy of respect and undeserving of ruling them.

“To the Muslims, a Hindu is a Kaffir. A Kaffir is not worthy of respect. He is low-born and without status. That is why a country that is ruled by a Kaffir is Dar-ul-Harb to a Musalman. Given this, no further evidence seems to be necessary to prove that the Muslims will not obey a Hindu government. The basic feelings of deference and sympathy, which predispose persons to obey the authority of government, do not simply exist. But if a proof is wanted, there is no dearth of it. It is so abundant that the problem is what to tender and what to omit…In the midst of the Khilafat agitation, when the Hindus were doing so much to help the Musalmans, the Muslims did not forget that as compared with them the Hindus were a low and an inferior race,” BR Ambedkar had said.

Ambedkar’s take on the prevalence of caste inequities within Islam

Ambedkar was also first among prominent intellectuals of his time to bring to fore the prevalence of the caste system in Islam. Hinduism hitherto had long been vilified for the existence of the caste system but Ambedkar highlighted that the dominance of the caste system and the practice of untouchability was pervasive in Islam as well.

He said Muslim society was riven by the social division between the Ashrafs and Ajlafs. The Ashrafs or the nobles included the foreign descendants and converted Brahmins whereas the Ajlafs or wretches were the lower caste Muslims.

Even after their conversion into Islam, Muslims were identified and stratified accordingly based on their caste. Besides Ashraf and Ajlaf, there was a third category called Arzals, which by many accounts is the most discriminated community among Muslims. Muslims were forbidden from associating themselves with Arzals. Arzals were not allowed to enter mosques to offer prayers. In addition to this, Arzals were also prohibited from using the same burial grounds as other Muslims. On occasions, they were also treated as untouchables.

Ambedkar did not stop just there. He pulled no punches in criticising Islam for the prevalence of child marriage, religious intolerance, the concept of slavery, rabid adherence to faith, the status of women in the society, polygamy and various other controversial practices.

“Take the caste system. Islam speaks of brotherhood. Everybody infers that Islam must be free from slavery and caste. Regarding slavery, nothing needs to be said. It stands abolished now by law. But while it existed much of its support was derived from Islam and Islamic countries. But if slavery has gone, caste among Musalmans has remained. There can thus be no manner of doubt that the Muslim Society in India is afflicted by the same social evils as afflict the Hindu Society. Indeed, the Muslims have all the social evils of the Hindus and something more. That something more is the compulsory system of purdah for Muslim women,” Ambedkar said while describing the scourge of casteism that plagues Islamic society in India.

Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar was a man of great discernment and character. At a time when other Congress leaders were condoning behaviour that needed to be called out, Ambedkar made no bones about what he felt about Islam and Muslims in India. Unfortunately, decades later as ‘liberals’ appropriate him and selectively invoke his statements to have a go at Hinduism, in order to drive Dalits away from their Hindu roots, this facet of his life where he presided over a thorough and comprehensive assessment of Islam and the social maladies afflicting Muslims is conveniently brushed aside. It is time that Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’s views on Islam receives the same critical scrutiny as his opinions on Hinduism have.

Video of police brutality at Kalka Ji Temple during Navratri goes viral, Delhi Police claims ‘everything is smooth as of now’

An undated video is making rounds on social media platforms in which Police personnel can be seen assaulting devotees at the famous Kalka Ji Temple in the national capital. The video has raised several questions on the crowd management tactics of the Delhi Police at the Temples.

A Twitter user Akshay pointed out such crowd management tactics are not used at places of worship of particular religion. He said, “This is our weakness that we have police in every famous temple. Have you seen any police in Jamia masjid or gurudwara inside the temple?”

In another video, it was claimed that the Police closed down the doors of the Temple. Some Police personnel were seen using batons at the devotees outside the Temple. The priests of the Temple said, “Our Temple has a history of over 5,000 years. Our ancestors have been serving in the Temple since the time of Mahabharata. Our ancestors and now this generation has managed the Temple perfectly without any problems. The Temple’s gates were never closed for the devotees. However, today, the administrator that has been placed by the High Court has closed the Temple from all sides. The Police personnel assaulted the priests.”

He further showed that all the gates were closed by the administration and again emphasised the fact that the Temple’s gates had not been closed even during eclipses. Notably, the majority of the temples close down the gates during the eclipse for a short period till the eclipse is over.

As per a report published in Hindustan, on October 9, the administration had closed down the temple’s gates, alleging Temple administration had broken DDMA rules. The report suggested that the Priests were allowing devotees to enter ‘Garbhagrih’, which was not permitted.

Priest Deepak Bharadwaj said that the administration took away the right to worship from the priests. He added that all the rituals are performed in the Garbhagrih. He requested the administration not to take away the worship rights and help the Temple administration better management during the festivities.

Replying to the video, Deputy Commissioner of Police, South East Delhi, said that the video is recent but a few days old. When the Navratri Festival began, a large crowd at the temple and Police used force to push the line forward. DCP office further said that crowd control arrangements were ramped up, and the rest of the days, things were smoother.

DCP Office’s reply further irked the netizens who objected to devotees being slapped by the Police. Twitter user Arvind said, “Hindus should next time treat these coward sarkari ****s like Muslims treat them! Pls form a mob & beat the shit out of these officers next time or else they won’t learn! Hey @DCPSEastDelhi, aren’t u ashamed of trying to justify this? If it were a Mosque would you all have dared to do this?”

Another Twitter user Nikhil said, “Police justifying violence on devotees in name of crowd. If it would have been done in Maharashtra then BJP would have raised this issue. Why Delhi BJP is silent, or for the matter, why is VHP/Bajrang dal silent.”

Twitter user eyes_of_argus said, “@DCPSEastDelhi justifying beating up of Hindus inside the temple during Navratri. Imagine how they must be treating Hindus the rest of the year. @PandeyEsha You should immediately apologize to all Hindus. You are an IPS officer not some leader of a mafia.”

A Twitter user Jagga Jasoos pointed out that such crowd management tactics are regularly used by Police in Temples. He said, “police do not treat devotees with respect, they show high handedness, manhandling in temples is very common. it’s time Hindu society adopts some best practices from others.”

OpIndia tried to reach out to Police and temple administration but could not connect.

Bangladesh: Islamic extremists vandalize multiple Durga Puja pandals, three Hindus reported dead

The vibrant festival of Durga Puja ended in violence and vandalism for the Hindu minority community of Bangladesh as Islamic extremists exhibited barbaric behaviour over a Facebook rumour.

A Facebook post allegedly showing Hindus insulting the Quran went viral on social media on Wednesday night after which the religious fanatics took to the streets to vandalize several Durga pandals.

Denying the claims of insulting Quran, Shibu Prasad Dutta, the general secretary of Cumilla Mahanagar Puja Udjapon Committee, informed that someone placed a copy of the Quran at a Durga Puja pavilion in Nanua Dighir Par early in the morning when the guard was asleep.

“The miscreants took some pictures of this and ran away. Within a few hours, using Facebook, the propaganda spread like wildfire with the provocative pictures,” confirmed a district official.

He hinted at the role of some  Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islam workers.

Temples in Chandpur’s Hajiganj, Chattogram’s Banshkhali, Chapainawabganj’s Shibganj and Cox’s Bazar’s Pekua were brutally attacked with the Hindu devotees being thrashed.

As many as three Hindus have reportedly been killed in the violent clash, however, the police is yet to confirm the same.

Local Hindus took to Twitter to share the visuals of attacks

Several local Hindus and Hindu organizations in Bangladesh took to Twitter to share the visuals of vandalism.

Sharing a video of an attack on Hindus, Advocate Dr Gobinda Chandra Pramanik, Secretary General of Bangladesh Jatio Hindu Mohajote Tweeted, “The situation is terrible!! Attacks on 150 families in Shilpara, Cox’s Bazar, widespread vandalism, looting, vandalism of Hatiya in Noakhali, vandalism of idols in municipal Kalimandir, attack Vandalism, molestation of women, 2 people have been found dead in Chandpur.”

In yet another update, advocate Chandra shared the news of the publicity secretary of Chandpur district branch of Bangladesh National Hindu Youth Grand Alliance being hacked to death. (Warning: graphic content)

Another Twitter handle by the name Jatayu Osint shared some more visuals of Islamic mobs vandalizing Durga pandals.

A pro-Hindu news portal ‘Hindu Voice’ shared yet another video of a Durga idol being thrown into the river. “Muslim mob have demolished 9 Durga mandapas and idols in Comilla, #Bangladesh. Hundreds of radical Muslims attacked this morning. The attack is still going on. Situation is still tense. Hindus are frightened. Police failed to control mob,” it Tweeted.

A Twitter user by the name Neel shared images of a brutally vandalized Durga pandal in the Chittagong district.

Ministries issue emergency notice and assure to take action

In an emergency notice, the religious affairs ministry said that it was alerted of the news of the presence of the Quran in a Durga Pandal in Cumilla, however, it urged the public to not take the law into their own hands over the incident.

Telecoms Minister Mustafa Jabbar had said that steps were taken to pull down the posts and videos immediately. “We’ve requested the removal of more than 100 Facebook links. We hope they will be blocked soon,” informed Jabbar claiming that the ministry was in touch with Facebook officials.

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader assured that the perpetrators behind the incident will not be spared, regardless of their political affiliation.

Heavy security was deployed at several locations all over the country, however, the damage and violence was widespread. Additional Deputy Commissioner (Overall) Shahadat Hossain also informed that a three-member committee has been constituted to investigate the matter further.

As per Quader, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ordered the criminals behind spreading communal attacks and propaganda to be identified and punished as an example.

We reported earlier, how four Durga pandals were attacked by the Islamic extremists since the beginning of the auspicious festive season for the Hindu community in Bangladesh.

Pakistanis attack Chinese tile manufacturing factory for ‘insulting Prophet Muhammad’, watch video

Pakistanis attacked a Chinese tile manufacturing factory in Faisalabad over allegations of insulting Prophet Muhammad. A video of the same has now gone viral on social media.

In the video, one can see local Pakistanis had attacked one Chinese tile manufacturing company, Time Ceramics Limited, Faisalabad, Pakistan. The company was blamed for manufacturing tiles with PBUH written on them. The word PBUH is added after the name of Prophet Muhammad and stands for Peace Be Upon Him.

As per reports, the locals in Faisalabad barged into the factory and smashed the tiles into pieces. The Chinese engineers and workers were also beaten up badly.

Secret Blacklist of Facebook: Islamists, Khalistanis & CPI (Maoist) in the list of around 4,000 ‘dangerous organizations and individuals’

On October 13, The Intercept revealed a list of over 4,000 names of individuals and organizations that are included in Facebook’s Dangerous Individuals and Organizations (DIO) Community Standard policy. The main aim of the policy is to ensure Facebook, as a platform, is not used or accused of helping terrorists or organizations to spread propaganda. Notably, the restrictions can be traced back to 2012, when there were concerns expressed by US Congress and the United Nations about social media platforms being used for terror recruitments.

The list of organizations and individuals include Khalistani terrorist organizations, terrorists linked to such organizations and the Communist Party of India (Maoist).

  • Jaish-e-Mohammed Kashmir
  • Tehreek-e-Azadi of Jammu Kashmir
  • Wilayat Kashmir

Pakistan’s Lashkar-e-Tayyiba and 78 individuals linked to the organization have also been added to the list. The list contains a total of 52 entries originating from Pakistan. Similarly, six Islamic terror organizations from Bangladesh are also on the list.

After the Taliban had captured Afghanistan, it was banned by Facebook from the platform. It had said that it banned the Taliban and all content supporting it from all its platforms as it is considered a terrorist organisation under US Law.

The policy got strict with time

When the DIO policy was implemented initially by Facebook, it was a modest rule that would ban anything hateful or dangerous to save the users. However, as time passed by, it has turned into a large set of restrictions applicable across 3-Billion strong user base of the social media platform. The blacklist that has been recently revealed include over 4,000 people and groups that includes writers, politicians, charities, music acts and historical figures.

Interestingly, though former US President Donald Trump was banned from Facebook, stating hate speech and other policies, his name is not included in the list. However, there are five militarized social movements in favour, and one against Trump added to the list. It is noteworthy that from time to time, there have been requests submitted to Facebook to make the list public, but the company has refused to do so.

Facebook has repeatedly claimed that revealing the list would put its employees in danger. However, The Intercept stated that no such information was provided to them. On Multiple Occasions, the Oversight Board of the company had recommended making the list public as it was “in the public interest.”

In a statement, Facebook’s policy director for counterterrorism and dangerous organizations, Brian Fishman, said, “We don’t want terrorists, hate groups or criminal organizations on our platform, which is why we ban them and remove content that praises, represents or supports them. A team of more than 350 specialists at Facebook is focused on stopping these organizations and assessing emerging threats. We currently ban thousands of organizations, including over 250 white supremacist groups at the highest tiers of our policies, and we regularly update our policies and organizations who qualify to be banned.”

Notably, most of the names in the list came from the US government. Around 1,000 entries have “designation source” of “SDGT,” or Specially Designated Global Terrorists written in front of them that means those names were picked from the list that Treasury Department maintains. It was created by the George W. Bush administration after the 9/11 attack.

What to ignore and what to remove: A detailed document

The Intercept also published an 11-page document that detailed out what kind of content is allowed on Facebook and what should be removed with immediate effect. For example, Facebook would delete content linked to terrorist organizations, hate organizations and their leaders, people who have committed mass murder or multiple murders, criminal organizations, and violent non-state actors. In the Indian context, statements like “joined Hizbul Mujahadeen to fight for the future of Kashmir”, “Hizbul Mujahideen is looking out for Kashmiris like me “, and “Hizbul Mujahideen is winning the war for a free and independent Kashmir” are not allowed.

The detailed report The Intercept can be read here.

A minor Hindu girl was allegedly gang-raped by a history-sheeter named Iqbal and his friend Ashraj Sadiq at Kuchaman town under Kuchaman police station of Nagaur district of Rajasthan. Police arrested both accused on Saturday and they were remanded to police custody for their questioning. Investigation revealed that accused Iqbal had befriended the victim by introducing himself as Shailesh a Hindu boy.

On Monday Nagaur witnessed a massive demonstration called by local outfit Sarva Hindu Samaj where people raised questions over the role of police also. The incident took place on October 6 when the victim who had gone to a dancing institute was found lying unconscious on the Station Road of Kuchaman, about 175 km from state headquarters. Ashraj Sadiq is the dance teacher at the dancing institute where the victim goes to attend dance classes.

But the family was initially apprehensive to lodge an FIR as an anonymous caller threatened the victim not to open her mouth. But after local residents and former sarpanch of Mithari panchayat Lokendra Singh assured the victim and her family their support the family ultimately lodged an FIR after much difficulty. According to reports, local police tried to suppress the matter and delayed lodging FIR despite knowing the involvement of Iqbal.

Iqbal who is booked in as many as eight criminal cases is said to be well connected with local police and he runs several spa centres. Amid public protest, the IG of Ajmer range S Sengathir suspended circle inspector Ramveer and head constable Sohanlal for not lodging the FIR when the victim had first visited the police station.

“Local police knew that Iqbal alias Bhantu Bhat has a criminal history. The phone calls also established Iqbal was regularly calling the victim. She was not aware Iqbal is pretending to be a Hindu. When his photograph was shown to the victim she identified him as Shailesh,” a local resident of Kuchaman told OpIndia over the phone. He said that Ashraj had introduced Iqbal to the victim.

The victim’s mother told the police that once her daughter had lost her mobile. Ashraj told her that Shailesh whom he treats as his elder is well connected with the police and he will help her to lodge a complaint about the missing phone and he will also ask the police to trace her phone.

This way Iqbal befriended her with help of Ashraj. But the victim had not met Iqbal before October 6 incident. The victim had her birthday on October 2 and Ashraj somehow convinced her to throw a party. Trusting her teacher on October 6 she left home for celebrations. Taking this opportunity, Ashraj and Iqbal took her in a car and raped her.

Shares of Tata Group Companies rallied on Wednesday with Tata Motors, Tata Motors DVR, Tata Power, Tata Chemicals and Tata Investment Corporation among companies that saw their share prices rise in the range of 10 to 20 per cent. Titan, Tata Steel and Tinplate were also among the stocks that contributed to the ongoing rally.

Tata Motors had recently entered into a binding agreement with TPG Rise Climate whereby TPG Rise Climate and its co-investor ADQ, will invest in a subsidiary of Tata Motors that will be newly incorporated. On the back of this new deal, the stock price of Tata Motors rose to 20 per cent to hit a new 52-week high of Rs 506.75 on BSE on Wednesday. It has soared about 42 per cent in the last 5 days. Besides the news of capital infusion, the stock’s impressive rally could also be attributed to the company’s strong volumes and a marked improvement in its balance sheet. The company expects to increase the sale of its product further as the economic recovery continues post slowdown.

The debt of the organisation has been reduced by Rs 14 billion QoQ to Rs 40.9 billion, due to better profitability and improving working capital. Reportedly, its India business cash profits continue to be higher than CAPEX. New launches, a strong pipeline of products and improved sales have underpinned the stock rally witnessed in the last few trading sessions.

Tata Motors DVR, which usually apes Tata Motors stock, also grew by 20 per cent on Wednesday to close at Rs 237.30. Soon after the stock soared by 20 per cent, the upper circuit was triggered, a mechanism enabled by SEBI to prevent operators from driving share prices.

Since stock prices are mostly sentiment-driven, they fluctuate due to positive and negative news, a circuit filter is set up to ensure that there is no extreme price movement and investors are protected from any unwanted surprises. The filters also help limit price variation to a certain extent by stock operators.

The upper circuit limit is the highest price a stock can reach on a particular day. When this limit is touched, there will be only buyers and no sellers. Likewise, the lowest price that a stock can hit is the lower circuit limit and when a stock hits this limit, there will be only sellers and no buyers.

“Arunachal Pradesh is and will always be an integral part of India,” India rejects China’s objection to VP Venkaiah Naidu’s visit to the state

India has strongly reacted to the objection of China to Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh. India’s official spokesperson’s Arindam Bagchi responded to Chinese comments on Wednesday by saying that its leaders and people have the right to visit the northeastern state, strongly reiterating that Arunachal Pradesh is and will always be an integral part of India.

“We have noted the comments made today by the Chinese official spokesperson. We reject such comments. Arunachal Pradesh is an integral and inalienable part of India. Indian leaders routinely travel to the state of Arunachal Pradesh as they do to any other state of India. Objecting to the visit of Indian leaders to a state of India does not stand to reason and understanding of Indian people.”

“Further, as we have mentioned earlier, the current situation along the LAC in the Western Sector of the India-China border areas has been caused by unilateral attempts of Chinese side to alter the status quo in violation of the bilateral agreements. Therefore, we expect the Chinese side to work towards early resolution of the remaining issues along the LAC in Eastern Ladakh while fully abiding by bilateral agreements and protocols rather than trying to link unrelated issues,” said the Ministry of External Affairs.

China objects to M Venkaiah Naidu’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh

Earlier in the day, China had objected to the visit of the vice-president of India to Arunachal Pradesh saying that “China doesn’t recognize the so-called Arunachal Pradesh illegally set by India”, reported its state-controlled media Global Times.

On Saturday, October 9, Naidu paid a visit to Arunachal Pradesh and addressed a special session of the state assembly.

China’s statement came as New Delhi and Beijing failed to make any breakthrough in the 13th commander level discussions aimed at ending the over-a-year-long standoff in eastern Ladakh’s remaining key points.

After deadly clashed in the Pangong lake area on May 5 last year, a military standoff developed in eastern Ladakh.

The long standing India-China impasse

Beijing has claimed Arunachal Pradesh, an Indian state, as part of China and showed it on official maps as part of the south Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR).

The Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has, however, been vigorously promoting infrastructure development and outreach programmes in Arunachal Pradesh, despite China’s constant ‘warnings.’

The Tibetan spiritual teacher Dalai Lama visited the state in April 2017 to attend a ceremony in Arunachal Pradesh, which China strongly opposed. India, on the other hand, has been emphasising to China that Arunachal Pradesh is and will continue to be an important part of India.

During the Doklam impasse, where Indian and Chinese troops were locked in a tense staredown, India had made it clear that it would not be bullied by China under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership.
