Punjab: Congress high command reluctant to give free rein to Channi-Sidhu, ‘remote-controlled’ cabinet expected

With the fallout with Captain Amarinder Singh fresh in mind, the Congress high command does not seem inclined to delegate powers to its Punjab unit. Within 4 days after being elected as the new Punjab Chief minister, Charanjit Singh Channi was summoned to Delhi two times to hash out a “consensus” cabinet, demonstrating party leadership’s resolve to keep the reins of the state government in its own hands and not allow local leadership to take control, a report published in News 18 said.

On Friday, 24 September, Channi was summoned again to Delhi, to discuss cabinet expansions, as per reports.

From administrative shuffle to the appointment of bureaucrats to the selection of ministers in the new Punjab Cabinet, Gandhis will reportedly have a say in all decisions concerning the state. The decision to take absolute control in Punjab state stems from the bad optics the party attracted in the wake of the unceremonious removal of Captain Amarinder Singh from the post of the chief minister.

“Besides deciding who all will be the part of the cabinet, the appointment of the bureaucrats assisting the government will now be taken by the high command, more specifically, the Gandhis,” said a senior party leader quoted by the News 18 report.

As per sources quoted in the report, the Gandhis are even keeping the Pradesh Congress Committee Navjot Singh Sidhu ‘under check’. Earlier this week, while returning from Shimla, the Gandhis took along with them former Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jhakhar to Delhi to consult him on the Punjab cabinet formation, indicating that they would also include those who are not firmly embedded in the Sidhu camp.

The party is mulling over appointing someone “neutral” as an election campaign party in charge to make sure that competing factions within the party do not indulge in recriminations over the appointment of the said person. Jakhar is among the frontrunner in the contention. According to the sources, Gandhis are open to consultation not just with Sidhu but with other voices within the party.

Officially, the party high command has maintained that it wants to give a free rein to the Channi-Siddhu duo in running the state, but the sources privy to the internal working of the Congress claim the Gandhis are still unwilling to devolve the entire responsibility to the two and still want to keep their functioning under check.

Sources say the inordinate delay in the announcement of the revamped police top brass was because of the high command scrutinising the names passed by the Punjab government. It is said that chief minister Channi was interested in having senior IPS officer Iqbal Preet Sahota, but the high command was less disposed to him and instead other names were also deliberated upon.

African countries cancel Chinese projects blaming China’s lack of transparency and shoddy work of Chinese companies: Report

0

The Chinese companies in Africa face resistance from the African administrations as several Chinese projects got cancelled and actions are being taken against Chinese investment in Africa. According to the Singapore Post, the shoddy work of the Chinese companies is to blame that led to tensions among several countries in the African region.

The Beijing Everyway Traffic and Lighting Tech company’s contract to develop an intelligent traffic management system for the country was cancelled by Ghana while Felix Tshisekedi, president of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), wanted the 2008 contract signed with China to be reviewed.

President Felix said he wanted better deals for the people of his country and indicated the exploitative nature of the Chinese saying, “Those with whom his country signed contracts are getting richer while DRC people remain poor.”

The Chinese companies had signed contracts in 2008 with the Congo President Joseph Kabila to construct roads, hospitals and bridges in the Democratic Republic of Congo in return for a 68% stake in the Sicomines venture of the country.

Lack of transparency and poor quality of work done by the Chinese companies was the main reason behind the cancellation of projects in Africa.

In Kenya, the high court cancelled the Standard Gauge Railway contract worth $3.2 billion when the court deemed the project illegal when it found that the contract prevented Kenya Railways from the procurement of Standard Gauge Railway.

John Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies’ China-Africa Research Initiative report said that China signed 1,141 loan commitments with various African governments and state enterprises which were worth USD 153 billion. This was done during the period 2000 to 2019, according to the Singapore Post.

Most of these Chinese projects in Africa are getting suspended or abandoned by the African countries amidst the Covid-19 crisis and the inability of these African countries to pay back the huge loans taken from China. Hence in order to cut debt burdens, these countries decided to shut down the Chinese projects, most of which fall under Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative 2013. The BRI (Belt and Road Initiative) is China’s attempt to integrate Asia Pacific, Africa and, Central and Eastern Europe through infrastructure developments.

Odisha: OTV journalist dies in tragic boat mishap in Mahanadi during elephant rescue operation

0

On Friday (September 24), OTV chief reporter Arindam Das died while covering the rescue operation of an elephant that was stuck in the overflowing Mahanadi river near Cuttack, Odisha.

As per reports, an elephant was stuck in the Mahanadi river at the Mundali barrage in the city. An operation was launched by Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) team to rescue the elephant from the river, as it was stranded amidst the high-speed river current, terrified and unable to escape.

In a tweet, journalist Siba Mohanty informed, “A swollen Mahanadi river and a sub-adult #elephant caught in its current, near Cuttack city. Forest teams are on the spot, coordinating rescue of the jumbo. Other members of the herd swum through to Chandaka forests.”

Arindam Das along with cameraman Prabhat Sinha had boarded a boat and followed the ORDAF team to cover the rescue mission. However, the boat was capsized by the strong river current. The duo was swept away and it was too late before they could be recovered. A rescue operation was launched to save the OTV employees. Siba Mohanty had shared visuals of the overturned boat and the rescue operation in another tweet.

Das and Sinha were admitted to the SCB Medical College and hospital in Cuttack. Despite the best efforts of the doctors, the Chief reporter of OTV did not survive. His aide, Prabhat Sinha, is said to be in a critical condition.

Arindam Das was a familiar face in Odisha, often seen on TV covering ground reports. His death has come as a tragic loss to the media community in the state. Many political leaders and prominent persons have shared condolence messages on social media.

Gangster Mukhtar Ansari demands exclusive facilities in jail saying he may be poisoned as ‘the UP govt is unhappy with him’

0

Notorious criminal Mukhtar Ansari, currently lodged in Uttar Pradesh’s Banda jail has demanded high-class facilities in the jail claiming that the Uttar Pradesh government might kill him. The BSP MLA from Mau constituency reportedly told the court that the Yogi Government might get him killed by ‘poisoning his food’.

Ansari, according to his lawyer Randhir Singh Suman, made the request to Barabanki’s special sessions judge Kamalkant Srivastava, during a hearing which was being conducted through video-conferencing.

“The state government is unhappy with me. It can happen that I may be given poison in food,” Ansari said, adding that if he is given high-level security, his fear will end. The gangster said that the UP Government is ‘upset’ with him so he was being made to live like a common prisoner in jail.

The lawyer of the gangster argued in court that his client is a high-class prisoner, but the state government and the District Magistrate are not giving high-class facilities to Mukhtar Ansari in jail. He, therefore, urged the court that it should use its powers to give this facility to Ansari.

The court has fixed October 7 as the next date for hearing.

It may be noted that during the earlier hearing in August, Ansari had told the court that a Rs 5 crore contract was given to kill him inside the jail.

In fact, ever since efforts were being made by the Uttar Pradesh government to bring back Mukhtar Ansari from Punjab’s Ropar jail, the Congress-led government has been claiming that the notorious criminal had been suffering from various ailments including depression, high sugar levels in the blood, and heart disease.

Interestingly, the Punjab government had put Mukhtar Ansari on ‘bed rest’ for three months when a team of UP Police had visited Punjab to bring back the gangster. This was the fourth time when Uttar Pradesh police had returned empty-handed. Thrice prior to this incident, Mukhtar Ansari managed to evade the UP police with the help of the Punjab authorities.

It must be mentioned that Mukhtar Ansari was regularly seen appearing in a wheelchair for hearings at the Mohali court of Punjab. However, on reaching the Banda jail in Uttar Pradesh, the notorious criminal was seen exiting from the back door of the ambulance on foot.

Remembering Mangalyaan mission: 7 years of India’s successful entry into Mars orbit overcoming all odds

On September 24, 2014, India became the first country in the world to enter the Martian orbit in its first attempt. The mission dubbed as ‘Mangalyaan‘(Mars Orbiter Mission) was the first such interplanetary mission undertaken by an Asian country. Although launched on November 5, 2013, from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota (Andhra Pradesh), it took 296 days for the probe to exit the Earth’s orbit.

It was on this day, 7 years ago, that the MOM probe finally reached the Martian orbit. It made ISRO the fourth space agency to achieve such a feat after NASA, European Space Agency and Roscosmos. The purpose behind the mission was to explore the Martian atmosphere and its constituents such as the concentration of methane and carbon dioxide. Another objective was to develop the technology required for operating interplanetary missions. MOM probe was also meant to study the Martian surface features, topography, mineralogy, effects of solar wind and radiation.

The trajectory of the MOM probe, image via MOM probe

The team of scientists, who worked on this project, were led by the then ISRO Chairman K Radhakrishnan. Mangalyaan is regarded as a successful planetary mission, particularly due to its cost-effectiveness. The Indian Space Research Organisation was able to achieve the feat at a budget of ₹450 crores ($74 million) i.e. 1/7th the cost incurred by the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) in NASA. The MOM probe collected close images of Mars’ moons, namely, Phobos and Deimos.

First successful maiden attempt to reach Mars orbit

Before India, the first attempts by the USA and Russia had failed to reach Mars orbit. Even China had tried unsuccessfully. The first Chinese mission to Mars, named Yinghuo, had failed in 2011, along with the Russian Phobos Grunt mission with which it was launched. An orbiter sent by Japan in 1998 had also run out of fuel and was lost.

It was able to capture the full disc of Mars and pictures of the far side of Deimos. From the findings of the interplanetary mission, ISRO concluded that dust storms on Mars can rise up to 100s of kilometres. The biggest achievement of India’s MOM probe was its ability to do manoeuvres without wasting fuel, surviving communication blackout for a month between June-July 2015, and avoiding a clash with the comet Siding Spring. On November 5 last year, ISRO released payload data from Sep 24, 2017, to Sep 23, 2019, to the public.

Elitist cartoon saga by New York Times

Cartoon by the New York Times

In 2014, New York Times had published a cartoon that was criticised on social media as well as in various Indian publications. But the newspaper could not hide its elitism behind the cartoon. In the cartoon, a bare-footed man wearing a dhoti, turban and holding a buffalo next to him is seen knocking on the doors of ‘Elite Space Club’. Perhaps New York Times wanted to remind us of our past when India was ruled by the British and the racism against Indians was at its peak. The cartoon was aimed at mocking India’s attempts to be a space power, in a disgustingly racist way.

NYT had later issued an apology for the racist cartoon. However, India’s space research has seen many milestones over the years. In March this year, ISRO chief K Sivan had announced that India will send a second Mars mission named Mangalyaan 2, most likely an orbiter mission. This mission is likely to be undertaken after the Chandrayaan 3 mission, where India is trying to land a rover on the Moon.

How Narendra Modi and Yogi Adityanath have rejuvenated the sugar economy in Uttar Pradesh

0

Sugarcane farmers and Sugar industry are the backbone of the economy of Uttar Pradesh. In pre-2014 times, the sugar industry was suffering from a huge liquidity problem and sugarcane arrears were in excess of Rs 15000 crore, which was more than 50% of the total sugarcane payment. During 2012-2014, some of the arrears extended for more than two years as well.

In the past, most governments have pitched farmers and the industry against each other irrespective of the fact that both are rather complementary to one another. Sugar industry makes sure that they crush each and every ton of available sugarcane regardless of sugar demand and farmers also back industry for sowing newer sugarcane varieties.

With the collective efforts of farmers, industry, agricultural scientist, state and central government, the sugar industry has had a turnaround from being a vulnerable Industry to a strong cash flow generating sector. Except for a handful of sugar mills, all others have paid 100% of dues for the season. Moreover, sugarcane dues of earlier years have also been fully paid.

Newer sugarcane varieties propelled growth

The enormous efforts of agricultural scientists resulted in introduction of the magical sugarcane variety Co-0238, which changed the entire dynamics of sugarcane economics with a 40% improvement in sugarcane yields and a 20% increase in sugar recovery (extraction of sugar from sugarcane). Though the variety was available even before 2015, it only gained prominence in 2017-18 improving the farmer’s income by 40-50%, largely by productivity improvement. Given the 20% improvement in sugar recovery, cost of production for sugar mills also declined by 20%, which gave them confidence to promote new sugarcane seeds for superior output.

Active government measures revived sugar economy

Though productivity improvement enhanced income of farmers and reduced the cost of production for sugar mills, it also led to the sweeter problem of excess sugar production and significant decline in domestic sugar prices in 2018. At that time, central and state government intervened to make a long term plan to utilize the excess sugar production. The central government came up with the certain short term measure in June 2018 to bring immediate relief to the industry and farmers.

These were (1) declaration of MSP (Minimal Selling Price) for sugar (2) start of monthly quota mechanism (3) buffer subsidy (4) export incentives for sugar companies. These measures ensured stable sugar prices and cash-flows for sugar mills, which in turn helped the millers to continue their timely payment to the farmers. With more than 15 million tonnes of exports, sugar inventories came down from the peak of 14.5 million tons (60% of consumption) in September 2019 to the reasonable levels of 8.3 million tonnes in September 2021. Central government export related support has made the industry self-sufficient to the extent that it may not require buffer and export subsidy in future.

One of the landmark step, after Yogi government came to power, was asking sugar mills to compulsorily open an escrow account. Sugar mills allocate 85% of the money received from the sale of sugar to the bank account of sugarcane farmers for bill payment. It protects sugar mills to divert money for the purpose other than payment of farmers. The state government also provided interest free loans to millers in 2018-19 season for timely payment to the farmers. The aggressive promotions and programs of UP government towards drip irrigation would also ensure that water is utilized appropriately for the high water intensive crops in the state.

EBP is giving wings of growth

Many of the measures taken during 2018-2019 were for safeguarding the industry from the immediate decline in sugar prices. However, with the collaboration of state and central governments, the pace of Ethanol Blending Program (EBP) has been accelerated. OMCs would be producing ~330 crore liters in the current year, which is closer to 8.5% ethanol blending with petrol. Modi government has kept an aggressive target of 10% and 20% ethanol blending by 2022 & 2025 respectively. In this regard investment worth Rs 40,000 crore has been initiated across India. UP, being the largest sugarcane producing state, would benefit the most with the implementation of EBP.

This program would not only ensure that excess 6-7 million tonnes of sugar is diverted towards producing ethanol but it would also push the depressed sugar prices in an upward trend. Notably, sugar prices have remained around Rs 30-35 / kg since 2010. Further, as much as 16 million tonnes of excess grain would also be utilized for ethanol blending program. With the 20% ethanol blending, the government would reduce its crude import bill by Rs 38,000 crore and vehicle emission (Carbon Monoxide, Hydrocarbons) reduces by 20-40%. Hence, the program is a win-win for all stakeholders.

Given the collaborating efforts of farmers, sugar industry, agricultural scientist, State and central government, the sugar industry has come out of the shackles of gloom and doom. Sugarcane payment to UP farmers in past five years has increased to Rs 1.42 lakh crore as against Rs 0.95 lakh crore between 2012-2017. Moreover, all due payments of the previous years to the farmers has also been paid during five years of Yogi Government.

The sea change in the industry was only possible due to the government’s right intent and commitment of increasing the farmer’s income. The productivity enhancement, emergence of ethanol and increase in sugarcane prices is likely to increase the farmer’s payment to more than two lakh crore in next five years along with a profitable sugar industry, which would also contribute to the exchequer. No doubt this old economy sector has been enabled with wings of growth.

FIR lodged against ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ for allegedly disrespecting courts by portraying actors drinking alcohol in a courtroom set-up

An FIR has been filed against the makers of the popular TV show ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ over an episode in which actors performing a courtroom scene were seen drinking alcohol. The complaint against the show accuses producers of disrespecting the court.

As per the complaint, an episode that was allegedly aired in January 2020 and was repeat telecasted in April 2021, showed a scene where the cast of the show was seen consuming alcohol during a court hearing. This did not sit well with Suresh Dhakad, a Madhya Pradesh-based lawyer, who has filed an FIR against the producers of the show in the district court of Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh.

After registering the complaint, the lawyer reportedly said, “The Kapil Sharma Show that is being aired on Sony TV is sloppy. They also make lewd comments on women. In one of the episodes, a court was set up on the stage and the actors were seen drinking alcohol in public. This is contempt of court. That’s why I have demanded registration of FIR against the culprits under Section 356/3 in the court. Such display of sloppiness should be stopped.”

“In the courtroom scene, the co-star comes onstage with a bottle of liquor and urges other people to taste it,” the lawyer said while interacting with reporters. “This scene outrages the dignity of the court. It should have also featured a statutory warning, which it did not.”

The case has been registered against the show’s anchor Kapil Sharma and Sony TV Director MP Singh under the IT Act and Excise Act, according to Dhakad. The case will be reportedly heard on October 1, 2021. However, Kapil Sharma has not reacted to these allegations as yet.

It was just recently that the Kapil Sharma Show returned with its new season. Kapil was seemingly on a break for months after he was blessed with his second child with his wife Ginni Chatrath. According to sources, Kapil wanted to spend quality time with his family and not get taxed with work at a time when a new member was added to his family.

However, Kapil and his team are back with a new season, trying to tickle the funny bones of their viewers with their slapstick comedy and on some occasions with ribald humour. Besides Kapil, the show also features Krushna Abhishek, Bharti Singh, Sumona Chakraborty, Sudesh Lehri in the lead characters, with Archana Puran Singh as the show’s judge.

USA: Women accuse White students of ‘racism’ over ‘Police lives matter’ sticker, people call for Arizona State University to take action

0

A video has gone viral on the internet where two women can be heard accusing a couple a White men of being ‘White nationalists’ and ‘fascists’ for sitting in a University room supposedly meant for ‘people of colour’. One of the two men also had a sticker on his laptop that said ‘Police Lives Matter’, which appeared to anger the women a great deal.

A woman can be heard saying in the video, “This is our space.” “You are white. Do you know what a multicultural space is? It means you are not being centered,” she says.

The woman goes on to add, “This is the violence that ASU (Arizona State University) does and this is the type of people that they protect. This white man thinks he can take up our space and this is why we need a multicultural space. Because they think they can get away with this sh*t.”

An extended 7 minutes 40 seconds recording of the incident is available on Reddit. In the video, a woman says, “You are racist, your sticker is racist.” “You can choose to be a cop, you can choose to kill people with a badge and you are protecting that sh*t, which means you are a racist,” she says.

The women also accuses the white students of making people feel uncomfortable with his sticker. Ultimately, the men decided to get up and leave the scene of confrontation.

The video has sparked sharp reactions on social media, with people overwhelmingly criticising the ‘woke’ women in the video.

Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has called for the University to punish the female students.

Richard Grenell, acting Director of the US National Intelligence under the Trump administration, also criticised the conduct of the women observed in the video.

The comments on the video are overwhelmingly against the ‘woke’ women who appeared to labour under the impression that they had done something heroic.

While the actions of the women have received strong criticism online, the sentiments that spurred them into action is harboured by a great many people in USA. The anti-Police sentiment has gained great momentum following the death of George Floyd last year, which sparked an endless cycle of violence and riots.

The protests led to calls for defunding the Police, which have been unsuccessful thus far. Simultaneously, ‘POC (people of colour) only spaces’ have mushroomed across the country with many Universities reserving spaces for non-White people only.

PETA resorts to sex: Shares cringe sexual videos making dubious claims to promote veganism

Sex sells. Since nobody is buying PETA’s ideas anyway, they have now decided to use sex to propagate their claims. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has shared extremely sexual videos on social media to claim that people who are vegan enjoy a better sex life than meat-eaters.

“Can’t put your finger on what’s not working in the bedroom?” claimed one of the videos. The video was about a human hand doing very ‘sexual’ and unspeakable things to different fruits. The idea was to suggest PETA has a solution for people who are experiencing a ‘not so good’ sex life.

And PETA’s so-called “solution” to sexual issues is apparently veganism. The organisation is claiming that vegans enjoy great sex life and they are superior in terms of sexual performance to non-vegans, especially meat-eaters.

The video comes with a barrage of pseudo-scientific claims. “Want to spice up things in the bedroom? Chilli peppers can have you hot and heavy in no time. A squit of OJ increases blood flow to important organs. Get a load of zinc to increase your libido. Avocados will give you the stamina to keep going on for hours. Go vegan. Your partner will thank you,” the video says.

The cringe video was called out on social media by many.

The video generated sharp reactions all over the world. The extremely sexually suggestive nature of the things being done to fruits made thousands of people comment and question PETA over the dubious claims.

PETA, however, maintains that vegans are better performers when it comes to sexual activities. So much so that, in reply to a social media user, they shared another video showing some explicit imagery of two different couples busy in sex.

In that video, while the ‘meat eater’ man tires after a short time, leaving his partner high and dry, the ‘vegan’ man keeps going for hours, trying different sexual positions and giving his partner ultimate sexual pleasure. Viewer discretion advised.

PETA’s go vegan campaign

The videos are a part of PETA’s Go Vegan campaign. In a recent article, PETA has told about the benefits of going vegan. They have stated that veganism is good for animals, meat is not green, and veganism is good for health.

All the claims about veganism boosting sex life, are, however, just claims. There are hundreds of articles and claims shared every year saying what is good for a better sex life and what is not. PETA’s claims about fruits boosting sexual prowess may have some basis on fruits being a good source of vitamins and minerals. But for good overall health, individuals need a balanced diet.

PETA kills thousands of animals every year

Though PETA loves to shame meat eaters and even milk consumers, telling everyone that they are committing an act of animal atrocity through their food, the organisation itself is one of the biggest killers of animals. Every year, PETA euthanises thousands of animals it claims to ‘rescue’.

A 2012 article in The Atlantic had described how PETA’s adoption rate for dogs is just 2.5%. They were found to have killed an overwhelming majority of cats, dogs and other animals they claimed to ‘rescue’. Year after year, many articles have exposed their claims, sharing how they kill most animals in their shelters and use pseudoscientific claims, and an elaborate celebrity marketing strategy to get millions of dollars in donations.

PETA Vs Amul

In India, PETA is best known for its hypocrisy. They target every single Hindu festival, trying to shame the majority population into renouncing their culture and traditions and follow PETA’s commands.

Recently, PETA has even started targeting Amul, India’s largest dairy products co-operative that provides livelihoods to thousands of rural women. They had tried to sermonise Amul, asking them to sell ‘vegan milk’. When questioned about their selective targeting of the Hindu community and total silence over slaughterhouses, PETA made bizarre claims, saying that cow slaughter happens because of the dairy industry.

Though it claims to care for animals, PETA has never bothered to explain why it doesn’t help the hundreds of Gaushalas run in India to shelter and protect cows, often rescued from the hands of cattle smugglers who take them to slaughter. PETA just continues to preach, endorsing highly expensive ‘vegan’ products and shaming people over their food choices.
