Congress MPs throw papers at Chair in Lok Sabha, create ruckus over Pegasus controversy

On July 28, Congress MPs tore and threw papers at the Chair and the treasury benches in Lok Sabha while protesting over Pegasus and farmers’ issues. The opposition leaders also raised ‘Khela Hobe’ slogans and demanded a discussion on the ‘Pegasus Project’ report. After the uproar, the Chair adjourned the proceedings till 12:30 PM.

The situation in Rajya Sabha was no different. The Opposition leaders restored to hooting and howling while Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri made a statement in the house. Reportedly, the Opposition parties’ leader had a meeting at the Parliament earlier on Wednesday to plan the future course of action over several issues, including Farmer Protests, Pegasus report and others.

The meeting took place in the chamber of the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge. Leaders from both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha from 14 parties that are Congress, DMK, NCP, Shiv Sena, RJD, SP, CPIM, CPI, NC, AAP, IUML, RSP, KCM and VCK attended the meeting.

Some prominent names included Rahul Gandhi, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Jairam Ramesh, TR Baalu, Tiruchi Siva, Kanimozhi, Supriya Sule, Praful Patel, Sanjay Raut, Hasnain Masoodi, Bhagwant Mann, Manoj Jha and others.

Speaking to the reports after the meeting, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that the Opposition would continue to raise the issues of ‘public interest’ and not compromise on matters including farmer protests, inflation and Pegasus Project. The Opposition has been creating a ruckus in the Parliament since the Monsoon Session commenced on July 19.

PM Modi asked BJP leaders to expose Opposition

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reportedly directed the BJP leaders to expose Opposition leaders for creating a disturbance in both houses.

After today’s incident, Union Minister Anurag Takhur said in a tweet, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi is ready to discuss every issue in the house then why the Opposition is running away? Throwing paper at the speaker, coming with placards and not allowing the minister to read the answers is shameful. Does it suit the MPs of the Opposition?”

“What is the urgency? Why not wait a week?” Calcutta HC grants West Bengal govt more time to file affidavit to NHRC report

Advocates appearing for West Bengal post-poll violence petitioners today took strong objections to Calcutta High Court’s order giving time to the state government to file its reply. The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday granted time to the West Bengal government till July 31 to submit its supplementary affidavit in response to the report of the Committee of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on the violence in the state.

While the Court made it clear during the hearing that no further extension will be given, the advocates representing the petitioners objected to the extra week given to the West Bengal government.

Advocate Priyanka Tibrewal appearing for one of the petitioners vehemently opposed the Court’s sluggish approach in the West Bengal post-poll case. Tibrewal’s arguments came after the Court could not understand the need for urgency in the case.

Tibrewal contested that the victims were being heckled into taking back their complaints due to delay in legal action. “State is using many tactics to delay the proceedings without paying heed to (the) plight of victims,” she argued.

Elaborating further, Tibrewal said, “The victims will end up withdrawing their complaints if the matter is further delayed. There is also a continuance of violence in West Bengal.”

“On last occassion, they (State of WB) were curious to find identities of Victims! They continue to harass rape and sexual assault victims & they have been pressurised to take back their complaints, hold flags of TMC. How long can they hold their courage?” questioned Tibrewal.

To this, the Bench asked if there was an FIR filed in this matter to which Tibrewal answered in negative.

“If your lordships think that people can be hung on trees and still the matters can wait, I have nothing to say,” concluded Tibrewal.

Taking Tibrewal’s objection forward, senior counsel Mahesh Jethmalani appearing for another petitioner contended, “Your Lordships know that extension of time leads to the disappearance of evidence. The police is complicit in this matter”.

He also argued that the state was given enough time to file a comprehensive response to the NHRC report and if the state requires more time, a reasonable cause must be shown.

The NHRC Committee wanted to apprise the Bench of subsequent developments and new cases, however, the same was dismissed stating ‘it was not on the arguments today’.

Closing the argument, the Bench ordered, “More time sought to file further reply to NHRC’s report, even though we had granted time to the state as a last and final opportunity, however, we grant another indulgence to the State to do so on or before July 31.”

The five-judge Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal, Justices I.P Mukerji, Harish Tandon, Soumen Sen and Subrata Talukdar took the required documents and reports of the deceased BJP worker Abjijit Sarkar. They also took on record the affidavit filed in response to the NHRC report by the State and a pen-drive containing the utterances of some members of the NHRC committee in public.

The matter has been adjourned till August 02 for further arguments on behalf of the NHRC.

‘Biharis don’t have brains, took away railway jobs because Lalu Yadav helped them clear exams by copying’: Tamil Nadu minister KN Nehru

On July 25, KN Nehru, the Municipal Administration Minister in Tamil Nadu made a derogatory and racist statement against the people of Bihar. As per a report in Outlook, while attacking Lalu Prasad Yadav for his tenure as railway minister, he said, “Lalu Prasad Yadav as Railway Minister had packed the Railways with Biharis, especially at lower-level jobs, even though Biharis were less brainy than Tamils.” The Minister was speaking at an employment camp at the DMK office in Tiruchy.

He further added, “Over 4,000 people from Bihar are currently working at the Golden Rock Workshop of Southern Railway located in Tituchy. The majority of the gatekeepers at railways crossings are Biharis. This is all due to the handiwork of Lalu Prasad Yadav. When he was railway minister, he had all his fellow Biharis pass the railways exams by copying and then got them appointed in railway jobs. These people know neither Tamil nor Hindi and lack the brains that we Tamils have. Yet they are working in Tamil Nadu.”

He blamed Tamils as well for not showing any inclination or take the initiative to apply for the jobs in the Central Government or its undertakings. He said, “Even though ten per cent of jobs in Railways and PSU banks are reserved for candidates from outside the respective states, very few of our students took advantage of this. Compared to the southern states, the youth of Tamil Nadu are on par with those from Kerala in terms of intelligence. Therefore, people from Tamil Nadu should try harder for central government jobs,” Nehru said, as per reports.

Recalling former Chief Minister Karunanidhi’s request to become MP and move to Delhi, he said that he declined the offer as he did not know English or Hindi. “I regret that now,” the Minister said. His remarks have caused a stir in the political arena. Interestingly, Prashant Kishore, DMK’s strategist for the last Assembly elections, is also from Bihar.

In the centre, DMK, as an opposition party, has accused the BJP government of appointing people from North India in the railway and bank jobs. However, all the appointments were made after the candidates passed the written exams and joined their respective posts via a 10% non-state quota. The same DMK is now blaming former Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav for preferring Biharis and Tamils for not applying for government jobs in the state.

Other bizarre statements by Nehru

This is not the first time DMK Minister KN Nehru has given a bizarre statement. During a political rally in March 2021, he justified allowing Tamil Nadu students to cheat in NEET exams claiming students from Bihar and Madhya Pradesh also cheat. He had added that if his party come back to power, he would extend the ‘privilege’ to the medical students of Tamil Nadu.

Rolls Royce entry tax: Madras HC stays order against Tamil actor Joseph Vijay that had asked him to behave like a ‘real hero’

In a big relief to controversial Tamil actor Joseph Vijay, the Madras High Court stayed a scathing order passed by a single judge recently against the actor, asking him to pay a fine of Rs 1 lakh for committing an alleged tax irregularity.

According to the reports, a Division Bench of the Madras High Court stayed an order passed by a single-judge bench of Justice SM Subramaniam asking him to pay Rs.1 lakh as a fine for failing to pay an entry tax on his Rolls Royce Ghost car he had imported from England. In a critical order, the court had asked him to be a ‘real hero’ and pay the due taxes after the actor had sought an exemption from payment of entry tax on his luxury car.

Imposing a fine, the court had also criticised Vijay for flouting the rules and had opined that tax evasion ought to be “construed as an anti-national habit, attitude, and mindset, and unconstitutional”.

In response to the court ruling, Vijay had challenged the fine and sought remarks against him to be expunged.

The actor’s counsel had stated before the court that he is not challenging the tax levy and is willing to pay the tax as early as possible. However, the actor’s counsel argued that the judge’s adverse comments against the actors has created aspersions in the mind of the public against the actor.

Hearing the plea, the Madras High Court bench comprising Justices M Duraiswamy and R Hemalatha granted the interim stay after the actor said he was ready to pay the entire tax amount but wanted the “uncharitable” remarks made by the single judge against him to be expunged.

The Division Bench also directed the Commercial Tax department to raise a challan demanding 80% of the tax amount since Vijay had already paid the 20% fine after another court had directed him to pay in 2012.

In 2012 actor Joseph Vijay had purchased a Rolls Royce car worth Rs.1.2 crore and had paid Rs.1.88 crore, or 150 per cent of the cost, as customs. However, he had challenged the Rs.40 lakh entry tax demanded by transport authorities. In 2012, he moved the Madras HC seeking exemption for the Entry Tax imposed on his imported Rolls Royce car.

Delhi HC pulls up Twitter over ‘total noncompliance of rules’, grants one more week’s time as last opportunity

Delhi High Court on Wednesday pulled up social networking giant Twitter over noncompliance of IT rules. Expressing unhappiness over affidavits, the HC granted one more week’s time to file a better affidavit which lists out details of persons appointed as Chief Compliance Officer and Grievance Officer as mandated in new IT Rules.

The Centre, too, has objected to Twitter’s affidavit on compliance.

Senior advocate Sajan Poovayya appearing for Twitter sought two more weeks’ time for filing better affidavits over appointing officers. ASG Chetan Sharma pointed out that Twitter India has earned revenue of USD 7 million in the year 2019 and despite this, there is blatant non compliance of rules in India.

“The officer himself says he is not an employee. It’s a chief compliance officer, there has to be some seriousness about the post. This in itself is in the teeth of the rule. This is a 31 year old person. What is this?” The court said.

Twitter had told the High Court that the same person, Vinay Prakash, has been appointed to two posts and that it has been using the term interim because the appointees are not employees but contingent workers on a third-party contract.

The Delhi High Court said that the affidavits filed by Twitter show clear noncompliance of rules and granted one week’s time to file better affidavits. The court directed that the affidvait must clearly set out details of persons who have been appointed as Chief Compliance Officer and Redressal officer. The affidavit will also furnish reasons as to why nodal contact person is not appointed till date and in what time will he be appointed.

The court has scheduled next hearing for August 6.

Nine-member Taliban delegation visits China to meet Foreign Minister, signals growing China-Taliban ties after US withdrawal from Afghanistan

China is probably seeing the Biden administration’s decision to withdraw all US troops from Afghanistan as an opportunity to ramp up its closeness with the war-torn country. In a first, a Taliban delegation has been seen openly visiting China for holding talks with its foreign minister. According to reports, Taliban delegates led by Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar held talks in China with foreign minister Wang Yi on Wednesday.

The Hong Kong-based newspaper South China Morning Post reports that the meeting was held in the northern city of Tianjin in China. Many pictures of the meeting have surfaced on social media sites.

A nine-member Taliban delegation is on a two-day visit to China for talks with the Chinese government on the peace process and security issues.

Dr. Mohammed Naeem, the spokesperson of the Taliban, tweeted that Mullah Baradar Akhund has visited China as the leader of a 9-member delegation on the official invitation of China. He informed that separate meetings were held with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the Deputy Foreign Minister and the Chinese Special Representative for Afghanistan.

“Politics, economy and issues related to the security of both countries and the current situation of Afghanistan and the peace process were discussed in the meetings,” Naeem said.

The Taliban spokesperson reiterated that the Taliban has assured China that Afghan territory would not be used against the security of any country, meaning they won’t give sanctuary to Uyghur separatists. ‘China pledged to continue and expand its cooperation with the Afghan people, saying that they would not interfere in Afghanistan’s affairs, but would help solve problems and build peace,’ he added. The Taliban also thanked China for ‘its continued cooperation with the people of Afghanistan, especially its continued cooperation in the fight against Covid-19’, the spokesperson further added

This is the first time ever any senior Taliban leader has visited China, since the Islamic terror group launched a massive offensive to capture territory across Afghanistan, coinciding with the rapid drawdown of US and NATO forces.

China raises concerns that under Taliban rule, Afghanistan will become a hub for the East Turkistan Islamic Movement

The meeting is said to come against the backdrop of Beijing’s concerns that under Taliban rule, Afghanistan will become a hub for the Uyghur separatist outfit East Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM).

East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM) is an Uyghur separatist group, aligned to Al-Qaeda, that has long sought independence for the Chinese province of Xinjiang.

Amidst the ongoing UN troop withdrawal and the Talibani offensive to regain control of the country, several hundred members of the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM) has remained active in several districts of Afghanistan. In their bid to establish an Uyghur state in Xinjiang, China, the group facilitates the movement of fighters from Afghanistan to China.

Earlier this month, China had expressed its concern regarding Afghanistan becoming a breeding ground for the fighters of the East Turkestan Islamic Movement. The concerns were raised amidst the turmoil precipitated by the US troop pullout and the offensive launched by the Taliban. Reportedly, China is also concerned that Afghanistan, under Taliban rule, may become a hub for the East Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM). The northwest Xinjian region, which is home to Uyghur Muslims, shares about an 8-km-long border with Afghanistan.

In order to assuage the concerns of the Chinese, the Taliban reassured them, saying that it saw China as a “friend” to Afghanistan and hoped that China invests in the reconstruction of the war-torn country.

“Taliban views China as a friendly country and we welcome it for reconstruction and developing Afghanistan”, said Suhail Shaheen, adding that “If (the Chinese) have investments, of course, we will ensure their safety”.

China eyeing to exploit the fallout between the US and Afghanistan

Meanwhile, China is smartly trying to exploit the void created in Afghanistan following the decision of the withdrawal of US troops from the country. Not only has China been vocal in criticising America for its decision to withdraw troops from Afghanistan, citing the deteriorating situation on the ground, but has also urged its all-weather ally Pakistan to step up cooperation to contain the security risks in the war-torn country following the withdrawal of the American forces.

In fact, at a meeting with his Afghan and Pakistani counterparts in June, China’s FM Wang Yi
vowed to “bring the Taliban back into the political mainstream” and offered to host intra-Afghan peace talks.

“China’s position is that this should be resolved within Afghanistan. And the situation in Afghanistan should not threaten China’s security,” a source said, naming security in Xinjiang and Chinese investments in the region as some of Beijing’s top concerns.

China’s interest in Afghanistan is understandable as the country has the world’s largest unexploited reserves of copper, coal, iron, gas, cobalt, mercury, gold, lithium and thorium, valued at over USD one trillion, which China is eyeing access to. Additionally, China wants to ensure that Afghanistan doesn’t become a hotbed for Uyghur Islamic militants from Xinjiang province that shares an 8- km-long border with the country.

According to The New York Post, the Kabul authorities have been interacting, even more deeply in the recent past, with their counterparts in China, as the latter shows interest to invest in Afghanistan’s infrastructure through its international ‘Belt and Road Initiative’.

China’s ‘Belt and Road Initiative’ is a trillion-dollar program of the Communist government of China which it uses to grow its influence by providing infrastructure loans to poorer countries in return for control over local resources.

Bakrid celebrations in Kerala turns out to be “Covid-19 Super-Spreader” as state records more than 50% of total new cases in the country

The Eid-ul-Adha celebrations have turned out to be Covid-19 super-spreader events across the country, especially in Kerala, as the state has yet again recorded more than 22,000 new Covid-19 cases creating a wave of panic.

On Tuesday, Communist-ruled Kerala reported 22,129 cases, the highest single-day spike in Covid-19 cases in two months with a test positivity rate (TPR) of 12.35%. It is the first time since May that Kerala has reported more than twenty thousand cases in a single day.

Kerala now accounts for nearly 53 per cent of the fresh infections in the country. India reported 42,917 new cases, 41,653 recoveries in the last 24 hours, as per the Union Health Ministry.

With Kerala reporting more than 15,000 cases every day on an average over the last two weeks, the total tally of Covid-19 cases in the state now stands at 33,87,716, the second-highest in the country after Maharashtra. More importantly, the state has now above 1.45 lakh active cases of the Covid-19, the highest in the country. Maharashtra has the second-highest active cases at around 82,000.

Kerala also recorded 156 deaths on Tuesday due to Covid-19, taking the related death toll in the state to 16,326.

The Muslim-majority in the areas, especially in North Kerala, has reported the maximum number of cases in the state. Malappuram district logged the most positive cases with 4,037 cases in a single day. It was followed by Thrissur (2,623), Kozhikode (2,397), Ernakulam (2,352), Palakkad (2,115), Kollam (1,914), Kottayam (1,136), Thiruvananthapuram (1,100), Kannur (1,072), Alappuzha (1,064), Kasaragod (813), Wayanad (583), Pathanamthitta (523) and Idukki (400).

One of the worrying factors about Covid-19 pandemic mismanagement in Kerala is the active cases in the state. As other states have almost brought the fresh infections to a halt, Kerala still has more than 1,45,367 active cases.

One of the major reasons for the sudden spike in Covid-19 cases in Kerala is the easing of restrictions by the Pinarayi Vijayan-led government for Eid-ul-Adha celebrations, a decision endorsed by the Supreme Court of India.

Despite raging infections in Kerala and the state government’s inability to manage the pandemic, the Pinarayi Vijayan-led government had given in to the pressure of the Muslim community in the society and had lifted lockdown restrictions for three days to celebrate Bakrid or Eid-ul-Adha from July 18 to July 21. The Kerala government had announced relaxations for the Bakrid festival in a press conference organised on July 17.

Eid ul-Adha turns out to be super-spreader events:

Since the onslaught of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country last year, Kerala has remained one of the two biggest epicentres of Covid-19 infections in the country, along with Maharashtra. In fact, Kerala remains the worst Covid-19 affected state in the country and continues to be a burden to the country’s efforts in tackling the second wave of the pandemic even as other states have successfully reduced fresh Covid-19 cases.

Despite failing to tackle the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Kerala government had opened up the state for Muslims to celebrate the Eid ul-Adha festival, risking the lives of citizens in the state. Due to the easing of Covid-19 restrictions, Kerala is now risking another wave of the pandemic as fresh infections have soared since the last two weeks, hitting a peak on Tuesday.

As restrictions were removed ahead of the Eid celebrations, Kerala has recorded the highest number of fresh cases surpassing the two-month average. The Eid events in Kerala have now become the epicentre of Covid-19 infections not just in Kerala but also in its neighbouring states such as Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Interestingly, the Supreme Court, which had ruled against conducting Hindu religious events such as Kanwar Yatra in Uttar Pradesh – one of the successful states to have handled the Covid-19 pandemic, did not direct similar actions to the Kerala government.

The Supreme Court had not passed any strict orders banning the celebrations in Kerala even as the state recorded the highest number of cases. However, two days later, after the completion of celebrations in Kerala, the Supreme Court had rapped the Kerala government for allowing a three-day relaxation in Covid-19 restrictions on the occasion of the Bakrid. This came on the third day of three-day relaxation.

With a sudden spike in cases in Kerala, it seems the worst damage has already been done as Bakrid celebrations in the state have resulted in increasing fresh Covid-19 infections in the state.

Himachal Pradesh: Road milestones in Naina Devi found defaced with Pro-Khalistani slogans

After farmers’ protests in Punjab and Delhi borders were hijacked by Khalistani elements, now slogans in support of the terror outfit and its ideologue Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale have been found scribbled on the road milestones in the Sri Naina Devi-Kolanwala Toba road in Himachal Pradesh. Besides, posters bearing pro-Khalistani slogans were also seen on the roads leading to the town.

One of the messages on the road milestones in Himachal Pradesh said it was the start of the Khalistani territory. Another message said, “You are to Khalistan”. Similarly, other messages included slogans hailing Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and Khalistan.

As per local police, the scribbling of Khalistani slogans on road milestones is the handiwork of mischievous elements bent on vitiating the atmosphere and causing panic among people. An investigation has been ordered to find out people responsible for sullying road milestones with Khalistani messages. DSP Shri Naina Devi Ji Purna Chand said the police would soon find out the errants responsible for the vandalism and arrest them.

The matter came to light when locals saw road milestones were scrawled with messages declaring the territory to be Khalistan. They promptly informed the local administration about the road milestones being marred by messages hailing Khalistan. Slogans of “Khalistan Zindabad”, “Join Khalistan”, “Referendum 2021”, and “Join SFJ” were written in the Punjabi language. In some places, it was written with paint, while in other places, it was scribbled with a marker pen.

It is worth noting that the road milestones were defaced at a time when thousands of devotees are travelling from Kolan Wala Toba to celebrate Shravan Ashtami in Shri Naina Devi. In such a scenario, the messages have created a stir in the region, with suspicions among people growing that some anti-social miscreants want to disrupt the festivities.

‘Kutta gum ho gaya’, public announcements made, entire state machinery made to search for top official’s lost dog in Pakistan

Pakistan too has found its Azam Khan. As the pet dog of Gujranwala’s Divisional Commissioner Zulfiqar Ahmed Ghuman went missing on Tuesday, the bureaucrat deployed the entire state machinery to trace it.

From public announcements to door-to-door searches, the entire police department and municipal corporation officials of Gujranwala literally went to each house in the city searching for the dog. In fact, an auto-rickshaw driver was also compelled to join the mission.

According to videos that have emerged, a loudspeaker was placed atop the auto-rickshaw and willingly or unwillingly, the driver was asked to cover every nook and corner of the town making announcements on a loop that the commissioner’s dog has gone missing. The loudspeaker blared threats, warning the abductor with a penalty and legal action.

This is not all, the local media houses and reporters aired messages that commissioner Zulfiqar Ghuman’s dog had gone missing. They then appealed to the civilians that whoever recovers the ‘missing dog’ must immediately take it to the commissioner’s house or face strict legal action.

According to Pakistani media house Dawn, the pet animal apparently escaped from Gujranwala Commissioner Zulfiqar Ghuman’s residence because “the gates were left wide open”. Following the dog’s disappearance, the commissioner lodged an official complaint demanding a ‘house-to-house search.’

Sources familiar with the incident told Pakistan’s broadcasters that the lost dog is worth 400,000 Pakistani rupees which is a little above 1,84,000 in Indian rupees. Meanwhile, the Commissioner’s house help has been reprimanded for negligence. He was pulled up for leaving the main doors of the house open as a result of which the dog fled.

Basically, the entire city was made to come to a halt. Keeping aside all the official work, the entire state machinery kept searching for the dog the entire day on Tuesday. Despite this, the dog could not be traced, reported Hum TV.

Crores gone down the potholes? RTI reveals BMC spent Rs 21,000 crore in two decades on potholes in Mumbai

A Right to Information (RTI) application filed by a BJP MLA has revealed that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has spent more than Rs 21,000 crore on the repair, maintenance and construction of new roads in little over two decades.

The reply said that maximum money- Rs 3,201 crores were spent just in one year between 2013 and 2014. It is immediately after this, that the infamous road scam had come to light, raising questions over the expenditure.

Taking a cue from a Times Of India report on potholes, BJP MLA from Andheri, Ameet Satam had filed a plea seeking a response on the expense incurred on fixing potholes in Mumbai. Satam said the BMC in its road department had spent more than Rs 21,000 crore since 1997.

Satam further said, “Bad roads are among the most pressing problems in this city, yet their condition has not changed for decades. There are multiple reasons for this, one being lack of coordination between multiple utility agencies and the BMC. So, when a road is newly made, the very next year it is dug for laying of cables.”

“Another problem is that no major road construction company comes forward to take up works as the tender size is very small for them (anywhere between Rs 1 crore and Rs 6 crore). Secondly, they are hesitant as they feel they may have to grease palms at multiple levels,” he added.

Case of missing potholes

The potholes have once again slowed the lives of the ever-in-a-hurry Mumbaikars. The BMC’s pothole tracking system says Mumbai roads have a just little over 500 craters, negating the existence of something visible to the naked eye on every turn. The pothole system also claims 307 of the 520 craters have already been repaired, inviting a backlash.

Early this month, the BMC was also trolled by the netizens for claiming that only eleven potholes remain in the city.

Mumbaikars are forced every monsoon to incessantly Tweet pictures of potholes tagging the BMC to bring their attention to something that is seemingly visible even from a great height and distance.

“The civic body has its ward level teams that are expected to move around. They should ensure that a pothole or any bad road patch in their ward is filled once they notice it,” said Dhaval Shah of Andheri Lokhandwala Residents’ Association.

“The incessant rain is exposing the quality of work done by the BMC so far. Two days back the entire road surface of a connecting bridge between SV Road and Mrinaltai Gore flyover near Ram Mandir was washed out and now the authorities have opened it for traffic after making it more like a kuccha road,” he added.

BJP attacks Shiv Sena

Taking a jibe at Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut who wanted Mumbai’s rich to donate for relief work, BJP MLA Ashish Shelar said, “BMC spent Rs.21,000 crores via its favorite contractors to build (Pothole) filled Road works for Mumbaikars in 20+yrs, per RTI! Will BMC Crorepati/Billionaire Road contractors respect SS Leader’s appeal & donate Rs 1,000 crore for Maharashtra??”

BMC post pictures of shoddy work

The BMC Twitter handles had to face the wrath of the citizens time and again for putting up shoddy “fixed” pictures of potholes.

More often than not, the citizens comment saying they find no difference in the before and after images.

It is evident from the images that the mix used to fix the potholes does not survive even a single spell of rain.

However, defending its work, Metropolitan Commissioner S V R Srinivas said, “We have a proper machinery in place and our team repairs the potholes as and when required. If at all there are any potholes or uneven road surfaces they will be repaired when we get dry spells.”
