SVDV BHU students end their protest temporarily, to boycott classes till admin gives answers, to meet PMO tomorrow

0

The students of SVDV which is the Dharma Vigyan department of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) who have been protesting the appointment of one Dr Firoze Khan in the Dharma Vigyan department for more than a fortnight now, has decided to discontinue the protest for the time being. The student in a media brief also informed that he along with other students would be going to the PM’ office tomorrow at 12 noon to submit a letter with their demands.

This development came in after the university administration has, in a written assurance, asked for 10 days time from the students to resolve the issue. Moreover, the students said that since the Prime Minister himself has taken note of the issue and a report has been sent to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), they would like to end the protest based on the expectation of positive outcomes.

The PMO has asked for a report from the BHU administration and Divisional Officer Deepak Aggarwal sent the report to the PMO despite being on a foreign tour. Now the administration is preparing a detailed report, which will be sent to the Prime Minister’s Office.

The students have however said that their fight will be ongoing and they will be boycotting all classes and examinations. But the protest is being put on hold. They said that till the VC and the administration doesn’t release a report, they will continue to boycott classes and examinations.

In a letter addressed to the media, the students have said that they are discontinuing the protest briefly, however, their demands remain the same and will continue the drive until all their demands are not met. They further intimated that though the protest has been temporarily called off on the written assurance of the administration but until there is no positive outcome the students would continue to boycott classes and examinations.

The protests, which were earlier limited to the Dharma Vigyan Faculty and the appointment of Dr Firoz Khan had now, made its way to several other departments. It escalated today after the students burnt effigies of Vice-Chancellor of BHU. Rakesh Bhatnagar is currently VC of BHU. Hundreds of students congregated to burn the effigy of the Vice-Chancellor.

Yesterday, the students presented a set of questions to the administration and have demanded answers. The students of the Dharma Vigyan department are protesting against the appointment of Dr Firoz Khan to teach Dharma Vigyan. While Khan is a professor of Sanskrit, he has been employed in the Dharma Vigyan department and not in the Arts department that teaches Sanskrit as a linguistic endeavour. The Dharma Vigyan department is a course for religious learning and Hindu Dharma.

On Thursday (November 21, 2019), Swami Avimukteshwaranand extended his support to the Dharma Vigyan students of BHU. He said that reading and experiencing the words are two different things. Shankaracharya also wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling the appointment of Firoz Khan contrary to the values of religion.

An elderly Catholic priest, who was also a correspondent of a school in Coimbatore, was arrested on Thursday for sexually harassing students of the institution.

According to the reports, Maria Antony Raj, a 60-year-old the catholic priest has been the correspondent of the St Mary’s High School in the Gandhipuram area of Coimbatore for over a year. He has been accused of forcing the girl students to open sexually explicit content on his mobile phone.

At first, the children informed their parents earlier this week, who in turn demanded the school principal to take action against the Catholic priest Raj. However, the school, which is run by the Coimbatore Diocese of the Catholic Church, did not act on the complaint.

As a result, the parents of schoolchildren complained to police and protested outside the institution on Thursday. The police registered a case at All Women Police Station, Coimbatore Central under provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) against Raj and arrested him.

Wife of Kamlesh Tiwari receives death threat written in Urdu from Maharashtra, police launch probe

0

Barely one month into the Hindu activist Kamlesh Tiwari brutal murder by radical Islamists, his wife has allegedly received a letter written in Urdu last week in which she has been threatened with murder.

The letter was allegedly written by one Ganesh Nago Rao Apte from Latur, Maharashtra. An FIR has been lodged against him.

Kiran Tiwari, the wife of the Hindu activist who was brutally murdered on October 18, 2019, received a sealed envelope at her residence in Khurshed Bagh, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh on the afternoon of November 14. On opening the envelope Kiran saw a nine-page letter addressed to her, out of which 2 pages had something written in Urdu. After she got the letter translated, she learnt that someone had, in the letter, threatened to kill her.

It is pertinent to note here that Kiran Tiwari had after her husband’s murder, filed an FIR against three people including Maulana Anwarul Haq, the head Imam of Jama Masjid in Bijnor, who had once offered Rs 51 lakh to behead Kamlesh Tiwari over his remarks against Prophet Muhammad.

Kamlesh Tiwari was arrested by the then Akhilesh Yadav government for his remarks against Prophet Mohammad’s sexuality in 2015. Muslim groups in Deoband, Saharanpur and West Bengal had launched massive riots and protests demanding Tiwari’s death.

A month back, on the 18th of October, Hindu activist and leader of the Hindu Samaj Party, Kamlesh Tiwari, was brutally murdered by Jihadis at his office in Lucknow. He was shot and his throat was slit by the murderers. Since then, the investigation has seen numerous developments and various people have been arrested for their involvement in the murder.

The two main accused, Moinuddin, along with Ashfaq, were arrested by Gujarat ATS on October 22 after being on the run for four days. While Moinuddin worked as Zomato delivery boy, Ashfaq, second man arrested for the murder of Kamlesh Tiwari, worked as a medical representative in a pharma company. He had forged his colleague’s Aadhaar to pose as Rohit Solanki, a Hindu rights activist, to gain the trust of Tiwari.

BJP is beginning to sputter at the state level and the party needs to urgently pay attention

If you ask me to explain in one single sentence the difference between Atalji’s five years and Modi’s five years, I would say this. The BJP’s influence in states was continuously receding during Vajpayee’s five years. On the contrary, Modi / Shah cultivated BJP very carefully in state after state during their five years.

Haryana, Maharashtra, Assam (and all of North East). The historic revival in Uttar Pradesh. A clear upper hand in Bihar. And the big surprise package : West Bengal. Even a modest beginning in Telangana. These days, PM Modi seems to be taking more and more interest in Tamil Nadu.

The list is endless. And very impressive.

But there is a slight trend reversal in progress. It is not strong enough to be called blowback yet, especially with the BJP having just stormed back with 303 Lok Sabha seats. But glitches are happening. And more regularly than expected.

Read: Devendra Fadnavis government has delivered almost every promise on economy and employment made before 2014 Maharashtra elections: An analysis

It began with Karnataka where the BJP failed to form a government. Then, losing 3 states in December of 2018. Now in Haryana where the BJP fell to 40 seats. Now in Maharashtra where the first ever BJP government has been displaced. Jharkhand? We’ll see. Don’t be optimistic. Delhi? Be very circumspect. Relax. Bihar is easy.

To be fair, it is possible to treat each of these elections as unique, as setbacks of various degrees. In Karnataka, the BJP only fell short by a whisker. In Lok Sabha polls, it entered for first time (and swept) the Old Mysore region. Ultimately, it managed to form a government. Then, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh were narrow losses. Chhattisgarh was a blowout but see how quickly BJP recovered.

Haryana is down by just 7 seats. In Maharashtra, BJP is still the biggest by a massive margin. Has both the best strike rate (by far) and most popular leader. Can look forward to imminent collapse of a khichdi govt which will be punished by people for sure. Jharkhand has never given any party a majority. And so on…

But winning is a habit. Each state where BJP stays out of power, even if for a few months, is still a setback. Every day in power is a chance to exert your influence. To sow a seed that might pay dividends in 10-15 years time, even generations later. The Congress understands this concept very clearly.

Read: Rules of Congress Mukht Bharat: BJP and Congress are no longer in the same league, far from it

Power is a funny game. With 303 seats, it is easy to get complacent. To be fair, the same could have happened with 282 seats in 2014. But between 2014 and 2019, Modi sarkar had one very valuable ally.

That ally was paranoia. Because only the paranoid survive. They had learned from Vajpayee’s bitter experience in 2004. As had all BJP workers, sympathizers and supporters. They took nothing for granted, least of all winning 2019. Not for one moment between 2014 and 2019 did they get complacent. The ghost of 2004 would not let them sleep.

Then, the 2019 election happened and the ghost of 2004 died. We all celebrated it when the ghost was finally buried. It had been on our shoulder for 15 years, causing the longest, most annoying pain ever. It was like we had successfully treated cancer and survived to tell the story.

But now the ghost is gone and there is real fear of complacency setting in. Yes, BJP still controls most squares on the chessboard. The largest state of Uttar Pradesh is safely in the bag. The khichdi govt in Maharashtra is bound to generate long term sympathy for the BJP. And the BJP is waiting to pick up the Bengal prize.

I love cricket analogies. It is like when a really weak team like Holland has to face off against a really strong team like India. They can’t really match India in batting or bowling. But what they can do is show exceptional commitment in fielding to block runs.

That’s what the opposition is doing right now. They are blocking BJP from scoring singles. Where the BJP expected two runs, it is getting just one. Where they hoped to hit a boundary, they are having to run for three. Every single run counts, remember.

Don’t forget what happens in cricket when the singles dry up. They say that the humble pawn is the most powerful piece on the chessboard. The minister can do a lot more as an individual piece, but remember you have eight pawns but just one minister.

In retrospect, was the ghost of 2004 perhaps a friend?

Shiv Sena will not join hands with BJP even it offers Indra’s throne: Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut

Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut has fired a fresh salvo at its former alliance partner BJP stating that Shiv Sena will not side with the BJP even if offered Lord Indra’s throne.

Speaking to the reporters, senior Shiv Sena leader reiterated that the next Maharashtra Chief Minister will be from his party when the three-party alliance of Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP forms the next government in the state.

“The time for offers has ended,” Raut said while responding to reports that had mentioned BJP had agreed to share the post of Chief Minister with the Sena.

Reportedly, Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut on Friday also reiterated that all the three parties, including the Congress and the NCP, had agreed to a Shiv Sena Chief Minister.

“There will be a Shiv Sena CM for five years, all three parties had agreed to it. Sena has taken this decision for Maharashtra’s pride and to give Maharashtra strong leadership. People of Maharashtra want Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray to become the CM. Shiv Sena has kept the CM post with itself on its own strength,” said Raut.

Raut also added that the new government will be formed in the next one or two days, and the government will be led by Shiv Sena.

Maharashtra has plunged into a political crisis after the Sena broke its three-decade-long ties with the BJP after two parties did not arrive at a decision on the post of Chief Minister of the state.

The BJP and Sena, which fought the Assembly polls in an alliance, had secured a comfortable majority by winning 105 and 56 seats, respectively, in the 288-member Assembly. The Congress and the NCP, pre-poll allies, won 44 and 54 seats, respectively.

As students burn VC’s effigies, Shankacharya writes to PM Modi on the BHU protests, PMO asks BHU admin for report

The students of SVDV, which is the Dharma Vigyan department of Banaras Hindu University are protesting the appointment of one Dr Firoze Khan in the Dharma Vigyan department. The protests escalated today after the students burnt effigies of Vice-Chancellor of BHU. Rakesh Bhatnagar is currently VC of BHU. The protests were earlier limited to the Dharma Vigyan Faculty and the appointment of Dr Firoz Khan. However, now, the protests have made its way to several other departments. Students of several departments are not alleging that incorrect appointments have been made by the Vice-Chancellor and those must be investigated as well. The students are now alleging that the controversial appointment of Dr Firoze Khan in the Dharma Vigyan department was done by the VC to brush under the carpet and distract people from several other improper appointments.

The BHU protests that are now in its third week have finally reached the highest echelons of power. Now, the Prime Minister himself has taken note of the issue and a report has been sent to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). The PMO asked for a report from the BHU administration and Divisional Officer Deepak Aggarwal sent the report to the PMO despite being on a foreign tour.

Now the administration is preparing a detailed report, which will be sent to the Prime Minister’s Office. The students have alleged that attempts are being made to discredit the university by making unqualified appointments in several departments.

On Thursday (November 21, 2019), Swami Avimukteshwaranand extended his support to the Dharma Vigyan students of BHU. He also addressed the students during the ongoing protests outside the residence of VC Rakesh Bhatnagar. He said that non-Hindus should not be appointed in the department of Malaviya ji established for Hindus.

Maharashtra’s bullet train funds to be given away as farm-loan waivers by Sena-NCP-Congress government

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious bullet train project between Ahmedabad in Gujarat and Mumbai may be scrapped if the Shiv Sena, the NCP and the Congress take power in Maharashtra.

According to the reports, the common minimum programme decided by the grand alliance of Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress has decided to scrap the bullet train project by withholding Maharashtra’s share of expenditure to the Rs 1 lakh crore project.

The government, if at all formed, will be absolving itself of the financial load of the project. The common minimum programme being worked out by the Shiv Sena, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Congress plans to go big on loan waivers and intends to use the share of the state fund for building the high-speed rail line project (25%) for the farm-loan waiver programs.

Reportedly, the share of Maharashtra in the cost of building the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail line will be given to farmers in the form of loan waivers.

The foundation stone for the bullet train was laid back in 2017 when Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had visited Modi in Ahmedabad. In order to aid the project, India is taking a loan of Rs 88,000 from Japan at an interest rate of 0.1%.

The proposed bullet train will run approximately 508 km between Mumbai and Ahmedabad with a top speed of 320 km/hr. The deadline for the project is August 15, 2022.

The National High-Speed Railway Corporation (NHSRCL), which is responsible for the construction, has already acquired over 48 per cent of the land for the project and also floated tenders for several works.

The Congress-NCP alliance are working out on a Common Minimum Programme (CMP) to form a government with the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra to keep the BJP, the single largest party with 105 MLAs, away from power in the state. The Shiv Sena, NCP, and Congress won 56, 54 and 44 seats respectively in the October 21 Maharashtra Assembly polls.

If we get into it legally, you’ll also derail movement: Mahima Kukreja allegedly to Utsav Chakraborty in second part of viral audio

An audio clip was released on Wednesday which was allegedly a conversation between standup comic Utsav Chakraborty, who was accused of sexual harassment, and Mansi Kukreja, lawyer-sister of Mahima Kukreja (Twitter user @agirlofherwords) who had put up these allegations. In the conversation, the woman can be heard threatening legal action if Chakraborty releases screenshots of conversations which may, allegedly, prove his innocence.

Since then, another audio clip has been released, this one much longer than the previous one, where the conversation follows a similar trajectory as the earlier one. The man in the audio, identified as Utsav, appears to be on the verge of tears and asks the woman who is addressed as Mahima why did she not verify the screenshots that were sent to her.

The caption of the video says, “In this audio clip, Mahima Kukreja and her lawyer/sister Mansi Kukreja can be heard telling Utsav Chakraborty that his life will be destroyed by them if he releases screenshots that would exonerate him from all allegations made by Mahima. He tells them to file a police complaint and go to court so he can come out with his side of the story but they refuse, saying that he cannot release anything without her permission. But didn’t SHE release false information about him without HIS permission?”
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1MpI6_XSxg]

‘You have put me through something I don’t think anyone should put even their worst enemy through this, I don’t even know why you did that,’ the man says, ‘but you have to understand the gravity of what happened.’ He also elaborates that he had troubles with numerous people and wasn’t getting too many shows. He had only started getting shows at that point of time when she treated him as ‘some sort of head-honcho, some Weinstein, someone who had so much control’.

The woman says she knew some of the women personally in real life who had made these allegations. She also says she received some accusations from people she did not know which she did not put up. ‘The point of the conversation is I didn’t want to put myself through more mental harassment which is the reason I did not file an FIR,’ the woman said. Utsav then questions why didn’t she and tells that he did tell her to file an FIR and reminds her that she still can.

Utsav then tells Mahima that she named and shamed him. ‘Mahima, listen, were you not naked right before?’ Utsav asked. Mahima then insists that it was her public Snapchat photo but Utsav denies it and says ‘stop saying that, be honest for one second’. ‘I asked you whether you were naked and you said yes, you were, I said prove it, you send me a picture,’ Utsav said. But Mahima continued to insist that it was a public photo but Utsav says she is confused and he has stuff on record to prove it. ‘Why would you ask for a selfie after sending me a nude?’ he asks. ‘I did not send you a nude, what the hell is wrong with you?’ Mahima insisted.

After a while, Utsav says, ‘You have destroyed my life and I am in pain. I will never have a job.’ Utsav eventually breaks down and says that he got ‘fu**ed’ more than anyone in this and more than he should have. He says, ‘I can’t go to the shrink because I don’t have money to go to the shrink. Even the lawyer I am talking to is a pro-bono lawyer. My parents are not rich. You kicked someone, Mahima, who had nothing.’ He also says that he was close to killing himself.

During the conversation, the women also say that in case he does anything, they would be forced to take legal action which will be worse for him. Utsav then asks what is he supposed to do in the meantime, how is he supposed to get a job. One of the women say, ‘Do you want to know what the conversation I have been having with my sister? I said this guy needs reformation. You should own up, you should go to therapy, you should get into social work.’ Utsav then asks, ‘What about the ones who were lying? Including you.’

Towards the end, Mahima says, ‘If you get into it legally, then I will also get into it legally. You’ll also derail the movement.’ Utsav responds, ‘I don’t want to derail the movement.’ She also tells him that it’s his chance to ‘move on’, to ‘get better’, to ‘get help’, ‘this is the chance to change your life’. ‘I don’t think everyone’s lying,’ a woman says, Utsav responds, ‘are you saying no one is lying?’ The video continues on this trajectory and is over 40 minutes long.

Utsav Chakraborty, meanwhile, is also tweeting his version of events and allegations by Mahima Kukreja on the matter on the social media platform. In one case, it is claimed that the girl shared portions of the texts between them with her current boyfriend who then proceeded it to share with others without her consent. Thus, the edited version eventually ended up on the social media platform which apparently showed Utsav in a bad light. Utsav tweeted screenshots of the woman’s tweets on the matter which showed her issuing an apology to him.

Utsav also claims that certain people with ‘online-cred’, an ‘exclusive in-group of ex-Buzzfeed writers, ex-pats and artists’ have been ‘regurgitating baseless lies’ in public and private circles. ‘This privileged cabal of cool’, he says, has been ‘furthering my decimation’.

Utsav is now ‘calling out’ women systematically on his profile. However, the truth of this ‘call-out’ on social media in response to the previous series of ‘call-out’ cannot be verified by OpIndia. OpIndia cannot verify any facts related to the matter and is only reporting what is already available on the public domain.

Furthermore, there are a great many allegations against Utsav himself and AIB which haven’t been refuted by anyone. Some women are still saying that Utsav did send extremely inappropriate texts to them and even now insist that he is ‘filth’ and a person with a ‘predatory mindset’. Under such circumstances, it is impossible to reach any hard and fast conclusion on the whole matter.

Minor girl raped and burnt alive in Uttar Pradesh, police arrests one Zeeshan who was the girl’s neighbour

0

In a shocking incident, a 16-year-old teenager was raped and thereafter set on fire by her neighbour in a township named Nakhasa in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district, police said on Friday.

ASP AK Jaiswal confirmed that the accused, the victim’s neighbour named Zeeshan has been arrested and a case has been registered against him. The victim who suffered 70 per cent burns has been referred to the Safdarjung hospital in Delhi. The probe is on in the matter, said ASP.

The girl was alone at her house in Nakhasa police station area on Thursday when her neighbour, Zeeshan, allegedly raped her, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Alok Jaiswal said. He later poured kerosene and set her ablaze, the ASP said, adding that she was rushed to the district hospital from where she was referred to Safdarjung hospital in Delhi.

The accused has been arrested and an FIR was lodged on the complaint of the family members, the officer added.

Last month, in a similar case of brutality, a 22-year-old woman, Shabana Begum, working in a beauty parlour, was set ablaze in her house in Kumarwadi, Tappachabutra in Hyderabad, by her jilted lover, Ibrahim, for refusing to marry him.

Shiv Sena MLA threatens to ‘break legs’ and ‘smash their heads’ if anybody tries to poach MLAs

A Shiv Sena MLA has threatened to “smash the head” and “break the legs” of anybody who tries to poach his party representatives. Sena MLA Abdul Sattar, who represents Sillod assembly constituency in Aurangabad district. was quoted as saying: “poaching or purchasing democratically elected representatives” was illegal in a democracy. “Our party is not some retail shop to buy MLAs from. If anybody tries to poach our MLAs, we will smash his head and break his legs too. However, the Sena will also summon an ambulance for the person and arrange for his medical treatment.”

Sattar’s comments came amid speculations that some Shiv Sena legislators have expressed displeasure with their party’s attempts to stitch an alliance with Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) for government formation in the state.

After the Maharashtra Assembly Elections, Shiv Sena and BJP fell out of their alliance because Shiv Sena insisted on the CM position and BJP was in no mood to oblige. The erstwhile Hindutva party Shiv Sena has now allied with Sonia Gandhi led Congress and Sharad Pawar led NCP to form the government in Maharashtra.

Earlier this month, the Shiv Sena and the Congress had moved their MLAs away from the public eye over concerns of them being “poached” by the BJP. Reportedly when the MLAs were kept at The Retreat Hotel in Mumbai’s Malad, they engaged in abusive arguments over Uddhav Thackeray’s insistence on the post of Chief Minister of Maharashtra. Shiv Sena MLA Aaditya Thackeray had to rush to the hotel following a revolt by Sena MLAs.

Shiv Sena, which emerged as the second-largest party in the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly, ditched its alliance partner, BJP after it decided to tie-up with NCP-Congress in an expectation that the party could get the post of Chief Minister.
