The locals alleged a conspiracy behind the idol vandalisation. One of the locals said that the idol was vandalised after everyone had left after performing the daily prayer
"The idol is being replaced and the person responsible for the mischief has been arrested. Preliminary enquiry suggests that the person has mental health issues," Basirhat Police claimed.
In a tweet, Dilip Ghosh said, "In a shocking incident, the idol of Goddess Kali was vandalized at the Kali temple in Shankhchura Bazaar, under the jurisdiction of the Basirhat Police Station."
While speaking about the matter, temple caretaker Uttam Karmakar stated, "I went to the temple on Sunday (2nd March) morning to offer puja and found the idol broken."
The attack was carried out by extremists, who came to the temple in a white car at about 3:45 am on Thursday .Thereafter, they vandalised the idols of the Hindu deities and fled the scene.
In visuals that have now surfaced on social media, it could be seen that the accused beheaded the Hindu deities. The idols were being prepared for the upcoming Hindu festival inside the premises of a temple.
