Rahul Gandhi’s ‘women empowerment’ punch line proves hollow when he appoints a misogynist as AICC secretary

Congress president Rahul Gandhi appointed MP Govind Singh Rajput as AICC secretary on the 7th of this month, raising a lot of questions and doubts on the Congress party’s integrity.

‘Women empowerment’ is the Congress parties most preferred gizmo, used habitually to score self-goals. Though this being the party supremo’s favourite card, he very often chooses to be oblivious when it comes to his own party members going against the parties so-called ethics.

Not long back, in December 2017, Congress leader from Madhya Pradesh, Govind Singh Rajput, the newly appointed AICC secretary, had made a derogatory and rather objectional statement against BJP women legislator Parul Sahu. Rajput had termed Sahu whose father is a big liquor trader the “liquor legislator”, and had taken a dig on her by saying “Daru jitni purani ho jayen utni acchi lagti hain” (older the liquor better it becomes).

Clearly, the Congress ‘Mr. Righteous’, Rahul Gandhi, who’s always zealous to speak up for women rights, chose to ignore this despicable conduct and went on to appoint Rajput as the AICC secretary.

Alarmed at this development the ‘rebel Congress leader Shehzad Poonawallah released a video of this said AICC Secretary raising questions at Rahul Gandhi, the party president and Priyanka Chaturvedi who is the National Spokesperson of the Indian National Congress.

In this video posted by Shehzad on Twitter, Govind Singh, while addressing the public in a rally, is clearly heard taking a dig at Parul Sahu, calling her ‘old wine’.

Govind Singh has also posted pictures where it is evident that he is close to the highest echelons of the party.

In fact, his profile picture on Twitter is one of him with Rahul Gandhi himself.

It is disquieting that being a woman herself, and hailing from a party who at least pretends to always stand up for women rights, Priyanka Chaturvedi too has been completely non-responsive on this issue and moreover has taken a step forward and rewarded people who have shown disrespect to women which has, however, become a culture in Indian Politics.

The narrative here is simple. Rahul and his party’s talk of respecting women seem hollow considering they are willing to elevate and promote people who would say such nasty things about women.
