Gujarat: Over 1,200 hospitalised following food poisoning after having food at Congress leader Wazir Khan Pathan’s son wedding in Mehsana

On March 4, over 1,200 people were hospitalised following food poisoning after eating dinner at Congress leader Wazir Khan Pathan’s son Shahrukh Khan’s wedding. The incident took place at Village Savala, near Visnagar taluka, District Mehsana, Gujarat. There were around 12,000 to 15,000 attendees at the wedding. Around 1,200 were hospitalised after they started showing symptoms of food poisoning, including vomiting and diarrhoea. They were rushed to different hospitals in Gandhinagar.

Visnagar taluka police have initiated an inquiry. BL Maheriya, Inspector, Visnagar taluka police station, said the wedding took place on March 3, and dinner was organised on March 4. After the guests started showing symptoms of food poisoning, they were rushed to the hospital. SP Parthrajsinh Gohil said the hospital authorities informed the police about the incident, after which station diary entry was registered, and an inquiry was initiated.

Gohil said, “FSL and FDCA have taken samples of sweets and other food items served at the dinner, and the results are awaited. The health department, too, is working on this and have taken samples of the vomit and stool. Prima facie, it seems the caterer may have been negligent, and there could have been adulteration in the food.”

He further added in such cases, it was up to the guests or the host to file an FIR. “Aggrieved parties can sue the caterer and seek compensation for treatment costs etc. Usually, because of the civil remedy available, criminal actions are not initiated right away. Approximately 1,250 guests have been affected with mild to moderate symptoms. There have been no deaths so far,” he said.

Office of Rushikesh Patel, health minister, issued a statement saying Patel rushed to Visnagar after learning about the incident and met the patients at the Civil Hospital, Vadnagar government hospital and Nutan Hospital. Out of the admitted patients, 95 per cent recovered and got discharged from the hospital on Saturday.

Visa, Mastercard halt operations in Russia hours after Ukrainian President urged for US companies to halt businesses amid war

On March 5 (local time), Visa and Mastercard issued separate statements announcing they had halted operations in Russia. Both the companies have stated Russia’s military action as the reason for their action. Notably, hours before the announcement was made by the two companies, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had urged the US companies to halt their businesses in Russia during a Zoom video meeting with US Senators. After the announcement, Zelensky talked to President Biden and appreciated the steps taken by Visa and Mastercard.

Visa’s statement

In its statement, Visa said it has started working with its clients and partners within Russia to cease all Visa transactions over the coming days. Once the process completes, the Visa cards issued in Russia will not work outside the country, and Visa cards issued from outside Russia will not work in the Russian Federation.

Al Kelly, chairman and chief executive officer of Visa Inc, said, “We are compelled to act following Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine and the unacceptable events that we have witnessed. We regret the impact this will have on our valued colleagues and on the clients, partners, merchants and cardholders we serve in Russia. This war and the ongoing threat to peace and stability demand we respond in line with our values.”

Mastercard’s statement

The company said it has decided to suspend its network services in Russia. The statement read, “With this action, cards issued by Russian banks will no longer be supported by the Mastercard network. And, any Mastercard issued outside of the country will not work at Russian merchants or ATMs.”

Speaking about the possibility of restoration of the services in the region, the company said, “When it is appropriate, and if it is permissible under the law, we will use their passion and creativity to work to restore operations.”

President Zelensky appreciated steps by Visa and Mastercard during call with President Biden

As per the read-out issued by the White House, US President Biden talked to Ukrainian President Zelenskyy on Saturday evening. During the call, Zelenskyy welcomed the decision taken by Visa and Mastercard to halt operations in Russia.

PayPal had halted operations

Earlier, PayPal, one of the leading digital payment companies, halted its operations in Russia on Saturday. On Wednesday, the company had stopped accepting new customers in Russia. Dan Schulman, President and Chief Executive, PayPal, said in a statement, “Under the current circumstances, we are suspending PayPal services in Russia. The company stands with the international community in condemning Russia’s violent military aggression in Ukraine.”

Russia-Ukraine conflict

On February 24, Russia had announced military action against Ukraine. Since then, several western companies have halted their operations in Russia. In addition, SWIFT, the system that helps banks worldwide to smoothly run financial transactions, had excluded Russia from the system. US and other countries imposed several sanctions on Russia over the military action.

Boria Majumdar threatens to sue Wriddhiman Saha, accuses him of doctoring WhatsApp chats

Hours after Indian cricketer Wriddhiman Saha appeared before the BCCI-appointed three-member committee formed to investigate the WhatsApp scandal involving the cricketer and an alleged journalist, sports anchor Boria Majumdar on Saturday put out a tweet accusing the cricketer of “doctoring” the screenshots of the WhatsApp messages.

On February 19, Indian cricketer Wriddhiman Saha had shared a screenshot of disturbing messages sent to him by a ‘journalist’ forcing him for an interview and then using disdainful language to deride him for not responding. In the purported conversation, the alleged journalist had asked Saha to do an interview with him.

The 37-year-old wicketkeeper posted a tweet, “After all of my contributions to Indian cricket..this is what I face from a so-called “Respected” journalist! This is where the journalism has gone.”

The journalist also said that he would not be pushing Saha for an interview, however, the wicket-keeper must choose the person who can help him the most. Saha did not disclose the name of the journalist, however, it was speculated that the journalist was none other than Boria Majumdar.

With the latest video by Boria Majumdar, the mystery has been unfolded regarding the identity of the journalist who allegedly threatened the Indian cricketer for not obliging his request for an interview.

In his 8 minutes 36 seconds long video, Boria Majumdar accused the Bengal-based cricketer of blurring a few parts of the text message he had sent asking for an interview. He also claimed that Wriddhiman Saha tried to erase the date and presented a manipulated version of the conversation in public.

Boria Majumdar also requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India for a fair hearing, adding that his lawyers are serving Wriddhiman a defamation notice.

“There are always two sides to a story. @Wriddhipops has doctored, tampered screenshots of my WhatsApp chats which have damaged my reputation and credibility. I have requested the @BCCI for a fair hearing. My lawyers are serving @Wriddhipops a defamation notice. Let truth prevail,” the alleged journalist tweeted.

On Saturday, Wriddiman Saha made his deposition before the BCCI’s three-member committee comprising the cricket board’s vice-president Rajiv Shukla, treasurer Arun Dhumal and the BCCI Apex Council member Prabhtej Singh Bhatia.

Following his meeting with the BCCI, Saha had said, “I have told the committee everything I know. I have shared all the details with them. I can’t tell you much right now. BCCI has asked me not to talk about the meeting outside as they will answer all your queries.”

According to a report by the Indian Express, Saha had named Mujumdar, who hosts a show “Backstage with Boria”.

More trouble for Ukraine, Russia-backed Transnistria in Moldova along the Ukraine border demands recognition of independence

Amidst an unprecedented turn in the current Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Russia-backed breakaway Transnistria region in neighbouring Moldova has demanded recognition of independence. On Saturday 5th March 2022, the separatist authorities in Tiraspol announced in a press release that they disagree with Moldova’s request to join the European Union. They also demanded the recognition of Transnistria’s independence in the same press release.

According to a report by Romania Journal, the Foreign Ministry of the de-facto govt in Transnistria said it was unhappy that the Transnistrian side had not been consulted before Moldova requested to join EU, and called on the Moldova govt in Chisinau to dialogue “for a civilized divorce and the establishment of inter-state relations.”

In the press release, the separatist authorities have said, “We regard the submission by the Republic of Moldova’s leadership of an application for membership in the European Union as a geopolitical decision leading to a change in international borders and spheres of influence in the regional space and radically altering the circumstances of the final settlement of Moldovan-Pridnestrovian relations. We understand the decision of our neighboring republic’s leadership.”

The separatist authority has further argued by saying, “Nevertheless, Moldova’s application for EU membership in terms of the protracted unresolved conflict between Pridnestrovie and Moldova, without regard to the opinion and outside the framework of consultations with the Pridnestrovian side, while completely ignoring the discussion of this issue in existing negotiation formats, including the international platform of the “Permanent Conference …”, marks an end to the settlement process, requiring urgent international legal registration.”

Reminding Moldova of the incidents in the past, they have said, “We consider it necessary to stress that the Pridnestrovian people determined their fate in a civilized and democratic way on September 2, 1990, stopped the military aggression of Moldova in 1991-1992, defended their freedom and independence, confirmed the inviolability of the course for international recognition of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic’s sovereignty and independence at a national referendum on September 17, 2006.”

Demanding their independence, the Transnistrians have said, “In the new circumstances, including those created by the Moldovan leadership’s actions, we call on the Moldovan side to engage in dialogue with Pridnestrovie with a view to a final civilized settlement of relations based on the peaceful good-neighborly existence of two independent states by signing a comprehensive interstate agreement.”

On the other hand, Romania has maintained its stand that it is with Moldova. Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Bogdan Aurescu has given a statement regarding this issue. Before attending the extraordinary meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, the Romanian Foreign Minister said, “Today Transnistria requested recognition of its independence. I am in direct contact with my colleagues in Chisinau. I discussed with my Moldovan counterpart Nicu Popescu, and our colleagues are preparing their stance on this issue. I would like to talk about this during today’s meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council. I take this opportunity to reiterate Romania’s strong support for the Republic of Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.”

About the agenda of the meeting, he was about to attend, Aurescu said, “The meeting will focus on the situation in Ukraine and the response of the international community to the Russian Federation’s aggressive actions.” He also underlined the importance of transatlantic coordination.

Transnistria: Tiny breakaway region in Moldova bordering Ukraine

Transnistria is a narrow strip of land on the eastern side of Moldova bordering Ukraine to the east. It lies between the Moldova-Ukraine borer on the east and the Dniester river on the west. Even though it is recognised as a part of Moldova, it is a de-facto independent state which is backed by Russia. Transnistria has its own government, parliament, military, police, postal system, currency, and vehicle registration, and is a semi-presidential system of governance. Officially called the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, the unrecognised republic has its own flag, constitution, national anthem, and coat of arms.

Russia maintains around 1,500 troops in Transnistria, a significant number given that the breakaway state’s military has only around 5000 soldiers. The Transnistrian administration is heavily tilted towards Russia. In fact, when Russia had annexed Crimea, the Transnistrian parliament’s president had asked to merge with Russia. Moreover, most people in Transnistria identify themselves as Russians, and also have passports issued by Russia.

Therefore, Transnistria demanding recognition of its independence is bad news for Ukraine. Although Russia at present does not recognise it as an independent nation, Putin can recognise it now, and can send more troops there. This will mean, the western border of Ukraine, which has considered relatively safe, will no longer be safe along the Moldova border at the south-west. Russia already surrounds Ukraine on the east, north and significant portion on the south, along with ally Belarus, and an independent Transnistria will mean Russian presence on the east too.

As Russia already controls Crimea, it can launch attacks from both Crimea and Transnistria, and cut off Ukraine from the black sea. This will effectively turn Ukraine into a landlocked cuntry.

‘Modi is a bio-Robo’, ‘Farmer protests linked to Godhra carnage’: Read the bizarre claims made by Congress MP Kumar Ketkar

On 27th February 2022, it marked twenty years of the Godhra carnage of 2002 and the riots that subsequently took place in Gujarat. At this point, former propagandist-cum-journalist and now a Congress MP in the Rajya Sabha Kumar Ketkar has reattempted his resurrection by targeting PM Modi in his address as the chairman of a seminar on the topic ‘results of farmers protest and the challenges ahead.’ Kumar Ketkar has said that ‘Modi is a bio-Robo’ in the seminar which was organized at Gandhi Bhavan in Pune jointly by Maharashtra Gandhi Smarak Nidhi, Yuvak Kranti Dal headed by 80-year-old Kumar Saptarshi and Samvidhanik Rashtrawad Manch on 27th February 2022.

The speech in which Kumar Ketkar said, ‘Modi is a bio-Robo.’

Starting the speech about farmers by speaking about Godhra

Ketkar started his address with strong denial of Godhra carnage on the very moment it turned two decades old. He said, “Today is 27th February 2022. Exactly 20 years ago on this day, Gujarat was set on fire because a train bogie caught fire at Godhra railway station. All the cases and trials, etc. have been completed but till now there is not a single clear evidence to explain how within just three hours of a train coach catching fire at Godhra, each and every Muslim locality of whole Gujarat was burning.”

Kumar Ketkar does not understand the chronology.

So, from the very beginning, it is clear that Kumar Ketkar has not read the reports of the Nanavati Commission and the judgments of the court in various cases regarding the riots. He has peddled a major lie about the date of the riots which did not erupt the same day but a day after the carnage. Ketkar said, “In 2002, there were no WhatsApp universities. Internet or mobile phone was not that easily available to people. An SMS would charge around 2 to 6 rupees. In such times, the riot in Godhra spread across the whole Gujarat state in a matter of just three hours. And not only this, but the riot was spread marking the houses, shops, and localities of the Muslims. This is how that genocide happened.”

Has Kumar Ketkar employed a secret forensic expert?

After terming the riots as genocide, he further said, “Everything of this, setting up a train coach on fire in Godhra station included, was pre-planned. Because many forensic scientists have proved that it is impossible to set such a coach on fire from outside. So this incident of 2002 changed the course of Indian politics. In fact, it was changed by the Rath Yatra in 1990. The Babri mosque was demolished in 1992, exactly ten years after which we see this Godhra incident.” Interestingly, he has not specified the forensic labs he had consulted with before throwing away such allegations.

How Godhra is linked to the farmers protest?

Kumar Ketkar soon tried to come back to the original track but did not forget to take an opportunity to enlighten the audience about how Godhra is connected to the farmers’ protest. He said, “Now I will tell you how this Godhra is connected with the farmers’ protest.” What he said immediately after this had no connecting link between the two incidents spaced two decades apart on the timeline. Have a look at his explanation. To connect farmers and elections with the Hindu-Muslim riots of 2002, he introduced the Muzaffarnagar angle.

In 2013, riots took place in Muzaffarnagar in which Muslims had attacked Jats. Image Source: Free Press Journal

Ketkar said, “There are elections going on in Uttar Pradesh. They have tried and tested it once again if there can be riots. They tested it in Muzaffarnagar recently. But they did not succeed unlike what they did in 2013. At that time they made Jats and Muslims fight with each other brutally. This time it did not happen so. But this doesn’t mean that the riots can be prevented after the elections. Because of the farmers’ protests, we could temporarily stop it. But right now there are elections.”

Kumar Ketkar goes inconsistent within a matter of a few minutes.

If you are still confused about how Godhra carnage is linked to the farmers’ protest, please go through the series of paradoxical allegations Ketkar has gone on throwing here and there. In this attempt, he conveniently slipped to his original communist thought lines.

He said, “Whosoever comes to the power, Narendra Modi is still confident that he can divide society based on religion and caste. And the biggest testimony to this is that Narendra Singh Tomar has told us in the parliament that the farm laws will definitely be brought back even if they are temporarily revoked. Maharashtra has passed similar laws in the past and that has worked like a vaccine or Omicron and we stayed silent when the laws were introduced, passed without discussions, and repealed.”

This is the blame-Modi part of the speech. Immediately after that, Ketkar has blamed members of the opposition who do not suit his communist agenda. He said, “Even in the opposition, there are some fellow members who unofficially discuss with us like ‘see the world is changing and so should the agriculture field, why don’t we support these laws.’ But under the garb of developmental changes everything there is run by the agenda suitable to the game of global corporate capitalists.”

Kumar Ketkar tries to establish that, not the Congress, but the BJP is actual brown sahib.

Now as the topic itself has unrolled up to international things, Ketkar cleverly introduced British Raj and further peddled his agenda of bashing BJP, RSS and accusing them of genocide which as per his claims is about to happen soon after the elections. Interestingly, he is blaming BJP in advance for the riots which he claims will take place in Uttar Pradesh, irrespective of who comes to power in Uttar Pradesh.

He said, “British people also ruled indirectly in the same fashion. They joined hands with the local princely states, landlords, and sahukars who helped the British people by demanding a rule of law. International corporates and local corporates are now pushing India in global neoimperialism which in turn is backed by the government through such policies. Curzon divided Bengal on a Hindu Muslim basis. The same is happening today. And it cannot be avoided even if Akhilesh Yadav comes to power. The thing is just that if BJP comes to power, the genocide will take place more rapidly. All the prior steps to that genocide are completed.”

Earlier in 2019, he had claimed that if Narendra Modi comes to power again in 2019, then India might shun its democratic roots and elections may not happen in 2024.

Blaming court of helping Modi on Hijab row

In order to make his address appear like that of a chairman of the seminar, Kumar Ketkar tried to take an account of the recent Karnataka hijab row. But more than being contemporary, his focus was directed towards attacking the judiciary for not giving the judgments as per Kumar Ketkar’s wish and will.

He said, “The hijab thing was started in just two colleges of Karnataka and now we are seeing it all over the country, especially in Uttar Pradesh. And by the court judgments in this matter and in other recent matters, it is clear enough that the court is also walking the path prescribed by Narendra Modi.” It is notable that the Karnataka high court had ordered a ban on any religious attire in the educational campuses having a prescribed uniform.

What Kumar Ketkar talked about the farmers’ protest?

Kumar Ketkar talked very less about the protest. He marked that Delhi’s farmers’ protest was inspired by the Nashik to Mumbai march of the farmers that took place in 2017. It is notable that the farmers’ organizations in that protest were also of the left-leaning ideology, and the protest was against the then CM of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis. Kumar Ketkar bashed the so-called Godi media for not reporting the real issues in both the protests – 2017 and 2021.

In 2017, leftist organizations of farmers had organized a long march in Maharashtra from Nashik to Mumbai against the then CM Devendra Fadnavis (BJP). Image source: Business Today

He said, “The media that covered the Kisan long march in 2017 was a Godi media at that time also. But in the 2017 long march, the media was so confused and it did not believe that so many people can walk together to the capital. The upper class of the media supports such incidents compassionately as Barkha Dutt did in the case of the Kisan long march. International media also works the same way.”

Kumar Ketkar still remembers demonetization very well.

Kumar Ketkar did not forget to mention that BJP was elected to power in Uttar Pradesh in 2017 months after demonetization. Linking the media coverage with the daring to speak truth to the power and ask tough questions is a style tone Kumar Ketkar could not avoid using.

He said, “That incident (reporting of Nashik to Mumbai farmers’ march) changed the tone of Marathi media. It gained confidence that Modi can also be questioned. Before that Modi was projected as some invincible man who can ban the notes and still win the UP elections. Kisan March of 2017 broke that myth and became an inspiration for the recent farmers’ protest.”

But he was still not happy with the kind of coverage the farmers’ protest gained in the media. He said, “Initially, the media houses did not give attention to the farmers’ protest in Delhi. Even while covering the protest, no media house discussed the laws but the media reported only how these farmers are living in tents and cooking foods, etc. Other sections of media portrayed them as Khalistani just like BJP did.”

Kumar Ketkar does not like making of New India

Making a backdrop for the picture he wanted to paint, Kumar Ketkar mentioned the central vista project and other developmental projects undergoing in the national capital. Most of them are being done because the old buildings are either dangerous or insufficient for the generations to come. But Kumar Ketkar does not like anything made by some non-Congress government. If someone is harming something made by Nehrus or Gandhis, he is hurt.

He said, “The assembly elections in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh are not the only reason to repeal the farm laws. But, in New Delhi, there is a huge construction site going on and it is called central vista. The hyped project costs 1300 crore rupees. In the next phase, they will raze off Rail Bhavan, Shastri Bhavan, etc. Prime Minister will also have a new house. Trimurti Bhavan is almost gone. Indira Gandhi national center for arts is also in the removed ones. Ok, you don’t like that name, change it. But this man has removed the whole museum. He wants to destroy everything.”

PM Modi had personally visited the Central Vista site and taken a review of the work progress. Image Source: News 18

Kumar Ketkar then went on explaining how anything against Gandhi and Nehru is against India – or say the so-called idea of India. He said, “Basically, this Modi-led RSS wants to erase the Gandhi-Nehru history of this country. It has nothing to do with the freedom struggle. They just can’t directly attack Gandhi unlike Nehru, therefore they worship Godse. All they tell about Nehru Gandhi is how they were responsible for the partition.”

Did Kumar Ketkar just exposed the conspiracy that could not realize?

In the heat of bashing Modi, RSS, and BJP, Kumar Ketkar had gone ahead to reveal what could be the dark secret of the farmers’ protest that lost its direction and funding the moment PM Modi announced to repeal the farm laws. If farmers’ were thinking on the same lines as what Kumar Ketkar has said, no sane Indian will call them farmers anymore. He has explained in detail as if he was involved in the microplanning of the conspiracy that could not realize. By comparing the extrapolated imaginary massacre of innocent farmers with the Jalianwala Bagh incident, Kumar Ketkar attempted to display the rich stock of references he has ready on the tip of his tongue.

The so-called protesting farmers had attacked the red fort on 26th January 2021. Image Source: Live Mint

Kumar Ketkar said, “Modi was afraid that if on the 26th January, the farmers sitting on the borders of Delhi come by normal local trains into the capital, and not tractors this time, plain simple train travel. Not a morcha, but coming in singles and doubles as 144 was imposed. So what if these people one by one gather at the site called central vista. You cannot separately locate everyone individually at such a place and you have to open the fire. You have to blow up the central vista site. And the farmers were Sikhs. So another Jalianwala Bagh was not affordable. Modi has repealed the farm laws just to maintain his image in international media. His image in international media is made by his grand concert-like speeches abroad attended by the NRIs in general and mostly Gujaratis in particular.”

Revealing next plans

He further said, “Today, we have temporarily won this fight. But the attack after the elections will not be targeted only on the farmers but it will be an attack on every one of us Indians from all sides. So we must be prepared for an all-out fight. Adani and Ambani are in league with the international corporates.

‘Modi is a bio-Robo.’

So that was all Kumar Ketkar had to say about farmers and protests. Then he resumed Modi hatred and Modi bashing. But what he said while attacking Modi personally has only made him look like a miserable court poet of the Gandhi-Nehru family whom a handful of listeners mistakenly think to be an intellectual.

Kumar Ketkar said, and he said it with conviction, “Modi is not just an illiterate uneducated but he is a sheer brainless coward. He does not know anything about anything. Reading and writing? No, you are taking it too long for him. No study and understanding of any subject. Some of his secretaries told me that whenever he goes to any damn place we need to give him an A4 size paper with bullet points written over it. Then he understands something that he has to talk like this and like that.”

PM Modi is an eloquent speaker. His extempore speech at Kashi Vishwanath Corridor has been phenomenal. Image Source: www.oneindia.com

After speaking these many bad words for PM Modi, who has delivered countless eloquent speeches full of references and quotations and numbers at many places without any paper or teleprompter, Kumar Ketkar slipped to the Modi speeches in which teleprompters are used. He said, “Teleprompter thing, we all know that. All he can talk about without a teleprompter is crying and saying how he is a victim. He does that in parliament too. And our politicians are impressed with that. They say, be what may, the man has emotions. No, that man does not have any emotions. Modi is a bio-Robo. He is an emotionless man.”

‘I have proof to say that he is a bio-Robo.’

Kumar Ketkar did not realize that he has just said something very weird. He went on to support his claims with some more weird reasons which rather than proving his point, just establish the fact that Narendra Modi is physically fit thanks to his years of regular yoga practice.

PM Modi has been practicing Yoga for the last so many years regularly. Image Source: www.rediff.com

Kumar Ketkar said, “I have proof to say that Modi is a bio-Robo. You might be listening to him for the last seven-eight years but I have covered his elections of 2002, 2007, and 2012 for Times Now channel and NDTV channel. I was called there for this. I know his speeches from that time period too. Even if we leave those speeches aside and take the ones he gave after 2014, what do we notice in those speeches? Any one of you please show me a single speech of Modi in which he has stumbled. There is none. A talk in which he has hiccupped. None. A talk in which he sneezed. No. An occasion where he had to cough a little bit. No. While delivering a speech, sometimes our voice obstructs, swallow a lump or a sigh or a cry, anything like that with Modi? Never. Why? Because it never happens with a Robo.”

‘Amitabh Bachchan and Paresh Rawal taught him acting.’

Kumar Ketkar, in this program, was looking like he is sane but his words contradicted his appearance. He said, “A Robo is just like a toy operating on a battery, you must have seen children playing with one. Likewise, Modi is a bio-Robo. Being a bio-Robo, he can always display that he has left with so much power and energy even after a long time.”

Kumar Ketkar has claimed that Modi had learned acting skills from Amitabh Bachchan and Paresh Rawal in their special coaching sessions. Image Source: www.indiatvnews.com

Then suddenly Kumar Ketkar said something which only he can believe. He said, “Modi makes his face like this. Then he makes his face like that. He does it just like that man Amitabh Bachchan has taught him. Don’t laugh. Amitabh Bachchan and Paresh Rawal have had regular training sessions for Modi. And this, I am not telling you gossip. This is the truth. And he has prepared on the basis of that only. We must give him some marks for this effort like if some student writes wrong answers in the exams, the teacher gives him a mark or two for good handwriting. It is just like that.”

‘Modi does not know the law.’

Kumar Ketkar did not stop throwing allegations against Modi. Having known that Narendra Modi has experience of heading a state government for 13 years and he has been running the union government for the last eight years, the Congress MP said, “Modi does not know anything about these laws. Even if he had studied a lot and then brought the bill in favor of capitalism, I would have lauded him saying what a well-studied man this is. But that too is not the case. He has been given the script and he has spoken that only. He does not know the pros and cons of the policy. All he knows is to help Adani Ambani and the international corporate capitalism because he speaks the script provided by them.”

Kumar Ketkar indirectly promoted regional divide on the basis of scripts of the language

As if bashing Modi was not enough, Kumar Ketkar revealed how does he look at the nation and how divided he assumes the country to be. He said, “Southern India has four states. Because I don’t count Maharashtra in the south as it has Devnagri script. Up in the north, Punjab is not Devnagri state. Bengal in the east is not a Devnagri state. So the non-Devnagri states, prominently the ones in the south are claiming that their rate of population growth is very less than those in the north and thus they have to carry the burden which is what was first proposed by Chandrababu Naidu and subsequently supported by Stalin. And don’t impose Hindi on us.”

Correlating this to his original BJP bashing agenda, he said, ” What does it mean? It means that BJP is effective only in these handfuls of Hindi-speaking states viz. UP, Bihar, MP, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh. The media calls BJP a national party which it is actually not. It is a local regional party of the north. Down here they don’t have any base in Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Pondicherry, and Telangana. They have managed it by hook or crook in Karnataka. Similarly, they have no base in Bengal, Punjab, and the northeast. This means that BJP is not a national party. We too are living in an illusion actually.”

Ketkar mongers the fear of balkanization

After portraying the division of the country as described above Kumar Ketkar went on to monger the fear of balkanization in the minds of the listeners. He said, “If this north-south divide increases our federal structure is gone. We have seen what happened with Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union. Yugoslavia was a country of 3.5 crore people at that time which is less than one-third of today’s Maharashtra. Sri Lanka is less population than Mumbai and Jaffna wish to separate out. They are already planning for a Vishal Tamil Nadu and if you see in the villages of Tamil Nadu or Jaffna you will find that Prabhakaran is celebrated as someone like Subhash Chandra Bose. See, this is the situation in our country.”

The hypothetical Vishala Tamil Nadu was referred by Kumar Ketkar in his speech. Image source: www.researchgate.net

‘I am in Congress by chance.’

This speech by Kumar Ketkar can be seen as the best example of what happens when a leftist propagandist journalist, after playing a full inning in the media wing of the left-liberal Congress supporting ecosystem, gets membership of parliament just for being loyal to the Nehru-Gandhi family. He said, “Some of our friends say that the people revolted against the emergency in 1977. What does it mean? They defeated Indira Gandhi in an election. That’s it. But in the south, there were slightly more than 130 seats out of which the Congress had won 128 seats. What does it mean? The people in the south supported emergency? No, they preferred her because they knew she was the national leader and the Congress was the national party. Janata Party secured just six seats then. People in the south were not supporting the emergency but they did not want to oppose it through Janata Party.”

Covering up the whole series of directionless blabbering, he concluded by saying, “However, this does not mean that whatever the Congress party does is correct. No. Not at all. And I say this even if I am in Congress. I am in Congress by chance, by a coincidence. But now what can we do with that?”

‘No Indian left in Kharkiv, main focus is Sumy now’, MEA gives updates on the evacuation of students from war-torn Ukraine

According to the ministry of external affairs (MEA), under ‘Operation Ganga’, India has successfully evacuated all Indians from the strife-torn Kharkiv, the second-largest city in Ukraine, where Russia intensified its assault for yet another day. The biggest obstacles facing Indian officials now, according to MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi, is the evacuation of Indians from the Sumy region amid continued shelling and violence, as well as a lack of transportation. Sumy is located in northern near the border with Russia.

“From Pisochyn and Kharkiv, we should be able to clear out everyone in the next few hours, so far I know no one left in Kharkiv. The main focus is on Sumy now, the challenge remains ongoing violence and lack of transportation; the best option would be a ceasefire,” Bachi said in the press statement.

In terms of departure points, Bagchi said that there will be five flights each from Budapest, Suceava, Romania, Rzeszow, Poland, Warsaw, Bratislava, Bucharest, and Kosice, Slovakia. Between Friday evening and Saturday morning, sixteen flights have been scheduled, including one by the Indian Air Force’s C-17 aircraft.

Bagchi told reporters that 15 flights had landed in the last 24 hours, with around 2,900 people on board. “So far, over 13,300 people have returned to India.” Bagchi continued, “There are 13 flights scheduled in the next 24 hours.”

Since the government issued advisories, over 20,000 Indians have left the Ukraine border, said the MEA.

“We will now be looking at how many are still in Ukraine. The embassy will contact those who happen to be there but haven’t registered… In nearby Pisochyn…we have moved (evacuated) 298 students, hoping to complete it by today,” he said.

According to the Indian embassy in Ukraine, buses have been organised to evacuate 298 Indian students from Pisochyn in the Kharkiv region. According to the government, eastern Ukraine, particularly Kharkiv and Pisochin, is receiving the most attention.

“We have managed to get some buses there. 5 buses are already operational, more buses later in the evening. About 900-1000 Indians were stranded in Pisochin and 700+ in Sumy. We are concerned about Sumy,” Bagchi said.

Bachi added that “the problem is in Sumy. We strongly urge both sides for a ceasefire, hope it happens soon as there is shelling, can risk lives. Indian students are safe in the campus… We have our teams now moving towards the East…Problem is shelling, transportation.”

Hours ago, the MEA said India is “deeply concerned” about the status of Indian students in Sumy, which has been rocked by nonstop combat between Ukrainian and Russian forces.

The ministry issued a statement urging students to exercise care and seek refuge in shelters. According to the MEA, the administration is pressuring the Russian and Ukrainian governments for a rapid ceasefire in order to establish a safe corridor through numerous channels.

“Have advised our students to take safety precautions, stay inside shelters and avoid unnecessary risks. Ministry and our Embassies are in regular touch with the students”, Bagchi had Tweeted.

According to the reports, more than 700 students are stuck in the Sumy area of Ukraine without water and proper sanitation facilities. The students have been asking for help since yesterday. While the Indian government is striving to evacuate the Indian students, the students have decided to stay inside the hostel, as requested by the Indian government.

It is worth noting that the Indian government has undertaken a special evacuation operation named ‘Operation Ganga’ for the stranded Indian students. Several special flights have been running from Poland, Romania, and Hungary to bring the students home. Air India, Air India Express, IndiGo, and SpiceJet have joined the Operation Ganga mission operating multiple flights from Ukraine’s neighboring countries to Delhi and Mumbai.

Nearly 20,000 Indian students, most studying medicine were stuck in Ukraine amid the conflict. Out of the total number, 60% have already reached India and efforts are being made to evacuate the balance 40% of the Indian nationals.

Former Jansatta Editor Om Thanvi shares a 3-year-old misleading video to claim BJP is involved in electoral malpractice in UP assembly polls

Ahead of the 7th phase of Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha polls, ‘journalist’ Om Thanvi shared an old, misleading video to insinuate that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is involved in election malpractice. Thanvi was associated with Hindi daily Jansatta and served as its Editor from 1999 to 2015.

In a video shared by Thanvi on Friday (March 4), a man (dressed in blue) named Virendra Kumar could be heard claiming that three BJP workers were distributing money among electorates and inking their hands to prevent them from casting their votes. “They told me not to vote, handed me ₹500 and forcibly inked my index finger,” he alleged.

Furthermore, an Opposition party leader could be heard claiming that the ‘election malpractice’ was being done on the behest of BJP candidate Mahinder Pandey. He alleged that Pandey sent his men to lure voters with money and inked their hands. He even threatened to stage a protest, demanding the right to vote from Election Commission (EC) for those who were ‘fraudulently’ stopped from casting their votes.

Another woman had also claimed that a BJP worker by the name of Chota Tiwari. While posting the contentious video on Twitter, OM Thanvi wrote, “Duniya ka sabse bada Loktantra (This is the plight in the biggest democracy of the world).”

By sharing this video amidst the ongoing polls in Uttar Pradesh, Om Thanvi tried to cast aspersions about the manner in which elections are being conducted in the State. The ‘journalist’ attempted to create an atmosphere of doubt and suspicion, which could be exploited if BJP is re-elected to power.

What is the Truth?

The contentious video dates back to May 2019 when residents of Tara Jivanpur village in Chandauli district of Uttar Pradesh alleged that ink was forcefully applied on their fingers and ₹500 was handed to them during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

While speaking about the matter, the then Chandauli Sub-Divisional Magistrate Kr Harsh had said, “Complainants are present at the police station. We will take action as per the complaint they file. They are still eligible to cast votes as the elections hadn’t begun then, they will have to mention in the FIR that ink was forcefully applied to them.”

Screengrab of the news report by The Economic Times

As such, the video is 3 years old and has nothing to do with the 2022 Vidhan Sabha polls in Uttar Pradesh. The official Twitter handle of UP Police also made it clear that the video is from 2019.

“The matter is related to the Lok Sabha elections 2019 in which necessary legal action was taken at that time. Chandauli Police has debunked this misleading post. Please don’t spread rumours by posting unverified content,” it tweeted.

Despite being ‘fact-checked’ by the UP Police, ‘journalist’ Om Thanvi did not bother to apologise or take down the video.

Didi darr gayi? TMC govt wants probe for air turbulence encountered by chartered plane carrying Mamata Banerjee, had earlier seen conspiracy in late landing

TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee won’t leave any opportunity to allege that the central govt is trying to harm her physically. After numerous allegations earlier, this time the West Bengal government has sought a report from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation because her flight from Varanasi to Kolkata had faced encountered air turbulence, a scary but regular and familiar experience for most air travellers.

The West Bengal chief minster was travelling in a Dassault Falcon 2000 business jet which has been leased by the state govt.

According to reports, the Mamata Banerjee govt has written to the DGCA seeking a report on the incident of turbulence that the aircraft carrying her from Varanasi to Kolkata had faced mid-air. Along with the report, the govt also wants to whether the route taken by the aircraft was granted prior permission by the civil aviation regulator.

Reportedly, Mamata Banerjee had suffered a back injury after her flight had encountered a spot of air turbulence. The incident had shaken the aircraft violently before the pilot had steered it away from the rough zone. The incident had happened yesterday when Mamata Banerjee was returning from Varanasi after campaigning for Samajwadi Party in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections.

TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh had said that the CM was already recuperating from a back pain, and the turbulence flared it up again. According to reports, a senior airport official said that the pilot had reported to the air traffic control about turbulence at a certain level, and had sought permission to descend at a different level to avoid it. After the permission was granted, the pilot descended from that level and landed the flight safely.

Weather officials said there was no forecast about any turbulence and the air pocket that the flight had encountered was sudden and extremely localised. “There was no turbulence forecast but such localised turbulences occur from time to time. Had it been a larger craft, the passengers would have faced less, or no turbulence on most occasions,” an official said.

Reacting about the reports of WB govt seeking a report on the same, DGCA said that they are already working on the report as per routine procedure. “We conduct investigations in all such cases and accord priorities where VVIPs are involved. We have already started working on preparing our report in this connection,” a DGCA official told media.

Even though aeroplanes regularly hit air pockets, TMC leaders are seeing conspiracy behind the incident. TMC national spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy has said that it was a serious matter and posed a threat to the chief minister. “There should be a high-level probe by the DGCA covering all aspects from the aviation point of view. There should also be another probe by the Centre from the security aspect as the chief minister is entitled to Z category security,” he said.

This is not the first time TMC seeing conspiracy in regular incidents. When an Indigo flight in which she was travelling had hovered over Kolkata airport for some time due to heavy traffic, TMC had claimed that it was a plot to kill her. Then, when some Indian Army personnel were deployed in her state under a routine exercise, Mamata Banerjee had claimed that it was a coup attempt.

After the famed McAdams moment on Times Now, anchor Rahul Shivshankar shares a light moment as the man of the hour returns on the channel

On Friday (March 4), Times Now anchor Rahul Shivshankar shared a light moment with Daniel McAdams, US foreign policy commentator and the Executive Director of Ron Paul Insitute. The development comes after a video of the news anchor, yelling at a Ukrainian journalist by mistaking him for McAdams, surfaced on social media.

“I am delighted to welcome back Mr McAdams on popular demand. I am sure you are aware that you have become somewhat of an instant cult figure here in India. And for many hours, you were the top trend across the nation. The most impressionable thing was that many in my country had even changed their Twitter display picture with your image,” he said.

The Times Now anchor informed, “This is a McAdams moment for them, not bad for a man who did not even get to speak a word. In a sense, Mr McAdams, you have come very close to emulating a certain legend who moved the nation without speaking a word (sometimes for days at an end). So there is power in silence and I am learning that.”

“For the opportunity, of course, of bringing some joy in these grim times to the world, I and my show producer are thankful to you. Indeed, what would we be without you today, Mr McAdams?” he remarked.

“But, I promise not to stand in your way tonight and so begin by asking you my first question,” he concluded.

The Background of the ‘McAdams’ meme fest

In a video that went viral on social media on Thursday (March 3), Rahul Shivshankar was seen reprimanding Bohdan Nahaylo, the chief editor of Kyiv Post, for the absence of US military intervention in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

But as the Times Now staff had mislabelled the guests of the show, and had switched the names of Bohdan Nahaylo and Daniel McAdams. On the screen, the words Daniel McAdams, Head, Ron Paul Institute was written on the video frame of Bohdan Nahaylo, and McAdam’s frame had the name Bohdan Nahaylo, Chief Editor, Kyiv Post. What followed was a hilarious comedy of error.

When the anchor lashed out at the US foreign policy commentator, he mistakenly used the name Daniel McAdams repeatedly. “Mr McAdams, Mr McAdams, if you are so concerned about the Ukrainians, then, get off the fence and put boots on the ground. Don’t lecture us here in India, okay? I am not going to hear you lecture,” Rahul Shivshankar was heard as saying. As Bohdan Nahaylo continued to interrupt Shivshankar, he continued to shout back at him with the name McAdams, both infuriating and puzzling the real McAdams.

“If you have any problems, then, go and tell Mr Biden who flashes his fancy credentials. Don’t play the cat’s paw for the West here… You ask those Afghans what they have gone through, falling off planes. Because you dumped them. You ask the African nations because you dumped them. You ask the millions of Iraqi citizens because you dumped them,” the anchor continued.

Without realising that he had mistaken Bohdan Nahaylo for McAdams, Rahul Shivshankar emphasised, “You people and your colonial agenda has wrecked the South, wrecked the East. Don’t sit here and lecture us Ms McAdams.” McAdams was trying to correct Rahul Shivshankar, but his voice was drowned in the shoutfest of the other two.

After some time, the real ‘Daniel McAdams’ had enough, and he intervened by saying, “I’m not talking. It’s the other guy who’s talking! Dear host, I haven’t said a word yet. I don’t know why you’re yelling at me…I am Mr McAdams and I haven’t said a word, so stop yelling at me!” To this, the anchor said, “I am not yelling at you, I am talking about Mr McAdams”, and then came the big moment of revelation for Rahul Shivshankar, as Daniel McAdams replied, “I am Mr McAdams, I am Mr McAdams.”

“OK, Sorry, I got that confused”, this what the anchor could say after the embarrassing gaffe on air. The case of ‘mistaken identity’ had sparked off a laugh riot and meme fest on social media.

Netizens took a dig at Times Now anchor over his faux pas

One Akshay Alladi complimented, “Haha, nicely done! Sporting – both by the now famous Mr. McAdams, and by Rahul Shivshankar.”

One user described how the real ‘McAdams’ must have felt while trying to draw Rahul Shivshankar’s attention towards him.

“I promise that from today I will never participate in Tv debates on Indian media because it is too risky, now they want me to change my name from McAdams to Makhanlal,” tweeted a parody account of the Executive Director of Ron Paul Institute.

“I am the Mr. Mcadams of my house. My whole family yells at me for no reason,” wrote one user.

Another user thanked the Times Now anchor for taking revenge for white people, failing to differentiate people of colour. “Proud of Rahul Shivshankar for confusing one white man with another. They have done that to us forever,” he said.

It is evident from the reappearance of Daniel McAdams on the PrimeTime show of Rahul Shivshankar that he did not take things to heart and instead dealt with the faux pas sportingly.

MEA arranges buses to evacuate more than 700 Indian students stuck in Ukraine’s Sumy area amid conflict

Amid the ongoing war in the Ukraine, the Ministry of External Affairs on Saturday has expressed deep concerns for the Indian students who have been stuck in the Sumy area of Ukraine. Arindam Bagchi, MEA Spokesperson, said that the government has strongly pressed Russian and Ukrainian governments to create a safe corridor so students could be evacuated.

“We are deeply concerned about Indian students in Sumy, Ukraine. Have strongly pressed Russian and Ukrainian governments through multiple channels for an immediate ceasefire to create a safe corridor for our students”, the tweet by news agency ANI informed. Bagchi said that the Centre has advised students to take safety precautions, stay inside shelters and avoid unnecessary risks. “Ministry and our Embassies are in regular touch with the students,” he added.

Reportedly, the students are scared and are struggling for basic amenities amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict. They have had no water, no food, no sanitation facility since the day stuck. Students in a recorded video that went viral over the internet said that they had melted the ice, filtered it and consumed it to satisfy their thirst. They also said that the toilets had started stinking since there was no water.

They also said that the ATMs had run out of cash and all the supermarkets are shut. Their contractor is providing them with one meal a day and the students are arranging for the second meal themselves. In the videos, they have also informed about the power outrages and aligned terrifying situation in the area.

Meanwhile, the MEA informed that the Indian embassy in Ukraine had managed the buses to reach Sumy for help. “The highest attention is on eastern Ukraine, particularly Kharkiv and Pisochin. 5 buses are already operational, more buses later in the evening. About 900-1000 Indians were stranded in Pisochin and 700+ in Sumy. We are concerned about Sumy,” Bagchi added.

It is worth noting that the Indian government has undertaken a special evacuation operation named ‘Operation Ganga’ for the stranded Indian students.
