Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha: Teary-eyed Sadhvi Rithambara hugs BJP leader Uma Bharti ahead of the consecration ceremony; pictures go viral

On Monday, 22 January 2024, Sadhvi Rithambara and BJP leader Uma Bharti, two leaders who were at the forefront of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement to liberate the birthplace of Lord Ram, had an emotional moment witnessing the history being written at the Ram Mandir temple in Ayodhya.

The two firebrand leaders, credited for keeping the flame of Ram Janmabhoomi struggle alive in millions of Ram Bhakts, embraced each other on Monday, minutes before the scheduled Pran Pratishtha ceremony of Ram Lalla in the newly constructed temple in Ayodhya.

Sadhvi Rithambara could not hold back tears while hugging BJP leader Uma Bharti, pictures of which instantly went viral on the internet.

For lakhs of Ram devotees, Monday, 22 January 2024, is filled with overwhelming emotions as their God, Lord Ram, is set to return to his abode, Janmabhoomi, in Ayodhya. Sadhvi Rithambara and Uma Bharti have been among the top leaders to lead and invigorate the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, which eventually paved the way for the landmark Supreme Court decision in November 2019, which granted the disputed site to Hindus to build a majestic temple devoted to Lord Ram.

The temple town has been decked up for the momentous Pran Pratishtha ceremony that would mark the reconsecration of Ram Lalla after almost 500 years since the place was violently usurped by Mughal invaders who destroyed an existing temple at the site and built a mosque over it. The ceremony is also a culmination of the centuries of struggle by Hindu devotees, who made profound sacrifices, including giving up their lives in their fight to reclaim the Ram Janmabhoomi.

Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha

The Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha in Ayodhya is not just a religious event. It marks a new chapter in the history of Sanatan Dharma. The ceremony, being completed on Monday, 22nd January, began on 16th January and encompassed a series of elaborate rituals full of Vedic traditions.

The ceremony signifies various aspects of purification, devotion, and consecration. The proceedings also involved a procession through the city with the idol of Ramlala, culminating in the ceremonious placement of the idol in the temple’s sanctum sanctorum.

Understanding Pran Pratishtha: The sacred alchemy of enlivening Hindu Deities

Pran Pratishtha is a foundational ritual in Hinduism. It embodies the spiritual and ceremonial essence of Sanatan Dharma. It is a sacred ceremony that is not just a set of rituals but a profound expression of devotion and spirituality. Pran Pratishtha aims to invoke the divine presence within an idol, transforming the sculpture into a revered embodiment of a deity. This ceremony holds an integral part in Hindu worship as it signifies the actual presence of the deity in the idol, making it worthy of devotion and prayers.

Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha

The Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha in Ayodhya is not just a religious event. It marks a new chapter in the history of Sanatan Dharma. The ceremony began on 16th January and encompassed a series of elaborate rituals full of Vedic traditions. The ceremony signifies various aspects of purification, devotion, and consecration. The proceedings also involved a procession through the city with the idol of Ram lalla, culminating in the ceremonious placement of the idol in the temple’s sanctum sanctorum.

Understanding Pran Pratishtha

In Sanatan Dharma, Pran Pratishtha holds paramount importance as it infuses life force or Pran into an idol. It marks the transformation of an idol from an artefact to a living embodiment of the deity (‘Pratishtha’). The idol, thus transformed into Bhagwan, can receive prayers and devotion from the devotees. The ritual signifies that the deity’s presence within the idol is eternal, transforming the temple into a space of divine communion.

The rituals of Pran Pratishtha

Pran Pratishtha starts with Shobha Yatra, a procession of the idol, which marks the beginning of its transformation into a deity. Rituals at the mandap are conducted to awaken the idol and ensure its readiness to transfer its divine essence to a new form if necessary.

In the “adivas” ritual, the idol is immersed in water and grain. It is believed that it heals any damage from crafting and identifies material defects. After this ritual, a bath or “Abhishek” is performed to cleanse the idol with sacred substances, including water, fragrant flower essence and others. One crucial part of the ceremony is the ritual of opening the eyes of the deity, where kohl is applied around the eyes using a gold needle. This step is carried out from behind the idol to avoid the overwhelming power of direct gaze into the divine eyes.

Notably, Pran Pratishtha is different from Pratishtha. In the latter, regular pujas and rituals are required to maintain the presence of the Bhagwan in the idol. However, Pran Pratishtha permanently installs the life force within the idol, thus eliminating the need for constant maintenance.

Detailed process of Pran Pratishtha

There are several steps involved in the Pran Pratishtha ceremony, as follows:

Karmakutir

It is the process of purification of the idol from the place of the artisan who made it. It involves removing any negative influences and closing the idol’s eyes with honey and ghee along with specific mantras.

Jaladhivas

This process ensures the completeness and checks for the idol’s potential damages by immersing it in water. Panchamrut (a mixture of five elements) is added to the idol vessel.

Dhanyadhivas

This process involves the purification of the idols using grains, also known as Dhanya.

Ghrutadhivas

The next step of purification is submerging the idol in cow ghee.

Snapan or Abhishek

In this process, bathing of ifol takes place with substances like milk and water.

Netra Anvaran

In this process, a mirror and golden needle are used to remove ghee from the eyes of the idol delicately.

Shodshopchar Puja

This process involves placing the idol in the final position within the inner sanctum, invoking the Nidra Devi, the Goddess of Sleep, and performing overnight Yagya away from the idol.

The above-mentioned steps are the preparatory ones, after which the actual Pran Pratishtha begins. It involves Nayasa, where the Pujari systematically invokes and transfers the life force to different parts of the idol, infusing the idol with Pran (life breath), Jiva (Soul) and the ten Indriyas (senses). After Pran Pratishtha, the idol is then purified with scented water and flowers. Netra Anvaran is performed to open the eyes of the idol, symbolising the awakened state of Bhagwan.

These steps of Pran Pratishtha transform the idol from an inanimate object to a living embodiment of the deity. It is capable of interacting with the devotees and responding to the prayers. The idol, thus, becomes a sacred entity, bridging the human-divine relationship and laying the foundation for Hindu devotional practices centred around the ceremonial worship of Bhagwan in the earthly forms.

The Significance of covering the Idol’s face

One of the most intriguing aspects of Pran Pratishtha is the tradition of covering the eyes of the idol until the completion of the ceremony. It underscores the belief that until the Pran Pratishtha is performed, the idol is not yet the deity itself but only a representation. Covering the face is done to separate the idol’s material form from its spiritual essence and to maintain its purity and sanctity until the ritual infuses it with the divine life. It highlights the reverence and sanctity accorded to the idols in Hindu worship and ensures that they are treated with utmost respect and devotion.

No police permission required for telecasting in private places: Madras HC rules amid removal of LED screens in Tamil Nadu meant for live screening of Ram Mandir Pran Prathistha

On Monday (22nd January), the Madras High Court ruled that no special police permission is required to telecast the Ram Mandir Pran Prathistha event in private spaces in Tamil Nadu.

The matter came up for hearing before a single Judge Bench of Justice Anand Venkatesh. The petition sought relief against the ‘verbal ban’ on Annadhanam (free food), special Puja and bhajans in private halls in Tamil Nadu imposed by the DMK government.

“Ultimately everyone concerned must keep in mind that Bhakti towards God is only for peace and happiness and not to disturb the equilibrium prevailing in the society,” the Madras High Court emphasised.

It further added that prior information to the Executive Officer would suffice for temples which fall under the ambit of Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments Department (HR & CE) in Tamil Nadu.

As per a news report published by Tamil daily Dinamalar on Sunday (21st January), the DMK-led-Tamil Nadu government had reportedly given ‘unofficial verbal directive’ to temples against conducting special prayers and offering Annadanam (free food) on the occasion of Ram Mandir Pran Prathistha.

The report pointed out that the government has verbally warned temple administrators against organising special programmes on behalf of the devotees.

“No special puja, offering of Annadanam and any related programs should be held in Tamil Nadu temples on the occasion of the opening ceremony of Ayodhya Ram temple. No program should be held on behalf of the temple administration or in the name of devotees or in the name of organizations or parties. It should not be advertised. Action will be taken against the concerned temple executive if any activities including Annadanam are done in violation,“ the report emphasised.

The report further added that the Tamil Nadu police are actively working to prevent the live telecast of the Ram Mandir Pran Prathistha on big screens in public places in the State.

On Monday (22nd January), Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman slammed the Tamil Nadu government for not allowing live telecast of Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha in temples. FM Sitharaman was scheduled to witness the ceremony live at a private temple in a small village in Tamil Nadu. However, the police personnel came in plain clothes and removed the LEDs.

Tamil Nadu: Cops remove LED screens meant for live screening of Ram Mandir Pran Prathistha, Nirmala Sitharaman calls out repression of DMK govt

On 22nd January, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman slammed the Tamil Nadu government for not allowing live telecast of Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha in temples. FM Sitharaman was scheduled to witness the ceremony live at a private temple in a small village in Tamil Nadu. However, the police personnel came in plain clothes and removed the LEDs.

FM Sitharaman voiced her concerns about the repression of religious festivities and the infringement of Hindus’ rights by the DMK-led state government. The minister took on X (formerly Twitter) to highlight the situation in various villages and temples where local authorities and police personnel hindered the installation of LED screens meant for the live telecast of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation in the Ayodhya Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha ceremony.

FM Sitharaman mentioned the village of Chengalpattu district, where the community wanted to celebrate the occasion and watch the live telecast on LED screens; however, due to the District Collector’s inaction on granting permission for the same. FM Sitharaman described a similar situation in Singaperumal Koil, another village in the same district, where police personnel in civil clothes came and removed LED screens from the privately held Kamakshi Kovil temple.

The FM expressed her dismay over the direct attack on freedom of worship and stated the actions taken by the DMK govt were anti-Hindu. She specifically pointed out the actions taken by the state government against the live telecast of PM Modi’s participation in the Pran Pratishtha ceremony on the temple premises. In the Kanchipuram district, FM said that there were reports that police blocked LED installation at 400 locations. She stated that several LED suppliers fled out of fear of the government.

Earlier, on 21st January, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticised the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government for prohibiting special poojas and food offerings in temples during the Ram Mandir Pran Prathistha. BJP Tamil Nadu President Annamalai and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman accused the state of anti-Hindu activities and interfering with temple practices, including banning live telecasts of the event. Reports suggested that the government issued an unofficial directive against organising events for the Pran Pratishtha ceremony, Annadanam, or related programs in temples for the occasion. Reportedly, the police also prevented live telecasts of the event at public places with actions threatened against non-compliant temple authorities.
