Deadly blast in Turkey’s Istanbul leaves 6 dead and over 80 injured, blacklisted terror group blamed for the attack: What we know so far

0

Hours after a deadly bomb blast tore through a crowded shopping street in Turkey’s Istanbul, killing six and wounding dozens on Sunday, November 13, the state-run Anadolu agency confirmed that one suspect has been arrested. Turkey’s interior minister Suleyman Soylu on Monday said the person is believed to have planted the bomb.

The minister attributed responsibility for the Sunday explosion on the Istiklal Avenue to the banned Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), saying, “our assessment is that the order for the deadly terror attack came from Ayn al-Arab in northern Syria” where he said the group’s Syrian headquarters are located.

The Kurdistan Workers’ Party or PKK is a Kurdish militant political organization and armed guerrilla movement. The PKK is designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States, the EU and some other countries. Since the 1980s, the PKK has maintained a deadly insurgency in southeast Turkey for Kurdish self-rule. Regularly the target of Turkish military operations, the PKK is also at the centre of a dispute between Sweden and Turkey. Turkey has been preventing Stockholm’s membership in NATO since May, blaming Stockholm for showing favouritism to the PKK.

“We will retaliate against those who are responsible for this heinous terror attack,” he said, adding that the death toll has risen from six to eight and that 81 people had been wounded, with two of them in “critical condition”.

No group has claimed responsibility for the blast yet.

Video of the bomb blast in Istanbul surfaces

The explosion occurred on a busy shopping street near Taksim Square on Sunday at about 16:20 local time (13:20 GMT). At least six people have been killed and 81 wounded in the explosion.

Videos that were shared online shortly after the explosion showed hundreds of people fleeing the street as ambulances and police rushed to the scene. The place was crowded with tourists, families and shoppers as usual when the deadly blast took place.

As seen in the videos and images that surfaced online, the explosion was accompanied by flames which immediately triggered panic, with people running in all directions. A massive black crater and many bodies laying on the ground were also visible in the images.

Authorities later revealed that among the dead were a Turkish government ministry worker and his daughter. According to news agency Reuters, five persons among those injured were shifted to intensive care in a hospital, with two of them being in a critical condition.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the perpetrators would be punished.

Speaking at a news conference in Istanbul, he condemned what he called the “vile attack” and said “the smell of terror” was in the air.

“It might be wrong if we say for sure that this is terror but according to first signs… there is a smell of terror there,” Erdogan said. “The attempt to take over Turkey and the Turkish nation through terrorism will not reach its goal today or tomorrow,” Erdogan added.

Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag, meanwhile, told Turkish media a woman had sat on a bench in the area for more than 40 minutes, leaving just minutes before the blast took place.

India expresses condolences

Following the blast on Sunday, India expressed its condolences for the unfortunate loss of lives. Arindam Bagchi, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, expressed India’s heartfelt condolences and wished those affected a speedy recovery.

He tweeted, “India conveys its deepest condolences to the Government and people of Türkiye on the tragic loss of lives in the blast that took place in Istanbul today. Our sympathies are also with those who sustained injuries. We wish them a speedy recovery.”

Istiklal Street had previously been hit during a campaign of attacks in 2015-2016 that targeted Istanbul. Those attacks, claimed by the Islamic State organisation, had killed approximately 500 people and injured over 2,000 more.

Punjab: Drunk men create a ruckus in Mata ka Jagrata, attack women with kirpans in Jalandhar

0

The law and order situation in Punjab has been steadily deteriorating in recent times, as seen by a slew of crimes committed throughout the state. A fresh incident has been reported in Jalandhar’s Shaheed Babu Labh Singh Nagar, where drunk hooligans created a ruckus during a Jagrata on Sunday. Several women were injured as a result of the subsequent violence by the hooligans. Following the violence, there has been tension in the area, necessitating a heavy police presence.

According to sources, the drunkards arrived at the jagrata and got into an argument with the organisers. The people in the jagrata tried to drive them away so that they wouldn’t ruin the jagrata, but after a while, they returned and abused and assaulted the people sitting in the pandal with kirpans.

According to those who arranged the jagrata, the hooligans arrived armed with kirpans and created trouble at the function. They attacked individuals listening to bhajans in the jagrata, but the victims managed to flee and preserve their lives. Several women attending the jagrata were also injured in this unprovoked attack. The young men were so drunk that they even hurled kirpans at the sacred flame. The hooligans then left the spot after some time.

Following a complaint, Police reached the spot and took stock of the situation. The police then got the jagrata to resume and promised the organisers that they will catch the hooligans soon.

Deterioration of law and order in Punjab

Notably, the state’s law and order situation has been steadily deteriorating since Aam Aadmi Party came to power early in 2022. After AAP won a landslide victory in Punjab, annihilating the Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal, the state has seen a spike in murders, with even famous Kabaddi players and world-famous singers not immune to the violence, videos of open drug sales in the state have also gone viral, and the state has even witnessed communal violence after so many years.

Very recently, Hindu leader Sudhir Suri was shot dead in broad daylight in Amritsar. Suri was shot numerous times in broad daylight on November 4 in Amritsar, in the presence of police. When the attackers fired Suri from the crowd, he was demonstrating outside a temple in Amritsar.

Also, flower petals were showered on Sandeep Singh, the suspected killer of Shiv Sena Taksali leader Sudhir Suri, outside the court as he was being driven there in a police van. Sandeep Singh was produced in court on Saturday after his 7-day police remand expired. The court extended the police custody for three more days after hearing the matter.

Just recently, a couple was brutally murdered in Ludhiana while their daughter could hear their shrieks. These are hardly isolated cases in Punjab over the last 2 months as criminals are getting more and more brazen, and openly executing their activities.

Maharashtra: NCP’s Jitendra Awhad booked for manhandling BJP Mahila Morcha leader during bridge inauguration

On Sunday (November 13), a case was lodged against Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Jitendra Awhad for assaulting, and shoving BJP Mahila Morcha (Maharashtra) Vice-President Rida Rashid in Mumbra.

As per reports, the incident occurred after Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde inaugurated a new bridge in Mumbra. Awhad, who serves as the MLA from the Mumbra-Kalwa Assembly constituency, was also present during the event.

When Rida Rashid was approaching the car of Chief Minister Shinde, she crossed paths with the NCP leader. In a video shared by the BJP Mahila Morcha VP, Awhad is seen pushing Rashid aside while saying something.

In a tweet, the BJP leader wrote, “NCP MLA Jitendra Awhad insulted me openly, holding me by my hand and pushing me saying, “What are you doing here?” I am a woman, who is being insulted publicly in this manner. The police administration should take action on it.”

A First Information Report (FIR) was thus registered at the Mumbra police station, based on the complaint of Rashid. Jitendra Awhad was booked under Indian Penal Code Section 354 (Assault or criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty).

While speaking about the incident, Rida Rashid stated, “Today, the new bridge at Y junction was going to be inaugurated. All of us reached at 4 pm itself as we knew that Devendra Ji and the CM is coming.”

The inauguration happened nicely. When the CM was leaving, I thought that I should meet him. “There was a lot of crowd. So, I was going through one side. I am walking close to the car. Two-three people passed by. The MLA Sahab came.”

Rashid pointed out, “A lot has happened in Mumbra. I have spoken out against this. Today, he insulted me. He grabbed me and pushed me aside. So, I registered my complaint at the police station.”

While reacting to the development, the NCP MLA tweeted, “Police registered 2 false cases against me in 72 hours and that too under Section 354. I will fight against this police brutality…I have decided to resign from my MLA post. I cannot see the murder of democracy with my eyes.”

Jitendra Awhad was arrested for stopping a show of movie ‘Har Har Mahadev’

The NCP MLA was recently arrested by Vartak Nagar police in Thane on Friday (November 11) for forcibly the show of a Marathi film titled ‘Har Har Mahadev’. On November 8, the police registered a case against Awhad and his supporters for disrupting the movie screening on the previous day.

Former minister Jitendra Awhad and some other NCP leaders in Maharashtra claimed that the movie was a distortion of history. They alleged that Jedhes, Bandals, and Baji Prabhu Deshpande were never against Shivaji Maharaj.

Moreover, Jitendra Awhad has said that the current wave of making films on the events in the life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was based on history as told by Babasaheb Purandare. He was later released on bail.

Kashi Vishvanath Temple: 3 suspects detained ahead of crucial verdict by Varanasi court in Gyanvapi case, security tightened

According to media sources, three suspects were detained in Varanasi before today’s crucial verdict in the Gyanvapi Kashi Vishvanath case. On Monday, a Varanasi court will decide on the Hindu side’s petition for permission to worship the Shivling found within the Gyanvapi disputed structure’s Wuzukhana.

As per a report by Times Now, two of the detained three have been identified as Muslims wearing green towels on their necks, as per reports. All three suspects were attempting to enter the Kashi Vishvanath temple when they were discovered to be suspicious by officials, who stopped them and took them into custody for further investigation following primary questioning. Notably, the entry of Muslims is barred inside the Kashi Vishvanath temple.

The 3 suspects are from Giridih, Jharkhand.

As revealed by the suspects in basic questioning, they were on their way to Delhi and stopped in Varanasi to spend some time roaming around. Following the incident, security has been tightened in the area considering the verdict in the Gyanvapi case to be pronounced by the Varanasi district court.

Today, a Varanasi fast-track court will give a ruling on a petition asking for permission to worship the Shivling inside the Gyanvapi complex. The matter was postponed by the court until November 14 during the most recent hearing on November 8.

The court will decide whether to grant the Hindu side’s demands, which include allowing the Swayambhu Jyotirlinga Bhagwan Vishweshwar prayer to begin right away, handing the entire Gyanvapi complex to Hindus, and banning Muslims from accessing the Gyanvapi complex.

A Shivling was discovered inside the Wuzukhana of the mosque compound on May 16, 2022, during a survey by the court-appointed panel. The Hindu side said that this was major proof that the mosque was erected by razing Lord Vishweshwar’s temple in Kashi.

The Muslim side, on the other hand, stated that the object was a fountain that was no longer in use. On the same day, Civil Judge (Senior Division) Ravi Kumar Diwakar issued an order sealing the disputed location in the complex in response to a plea filed by the Hindu side’s attorney Vishnu Shankar Jain.

The Supreme Court extended its earlier directive to protect the region where the Shivling was found during the court-mandated survey of the Gyanvapi Mosque complex on November 11.

The Shringar Gauri-Gyanvapi complex case has been heated, with the primary lawsuit demanding the right to pray at the Gyanvapi Complex site. In this case, five female Hindu petitioners argued that the structure is a part of the temple.

Pakistan bans the film Joyland, its official Oscar entry, because of ‘highly objectionable content’ concerning queer theme

On November 11, Saim Sadiq’s critically-acclaimed film Joyland got banned in Pakistan by the authorities. In its notification, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said it contained ‘highly objectionable material. The movie reportedly got a screening certificate from the government on August 17. It was the official entry of Pakistan for the 2023 Oscars.

Notably, objections were raised over the content after its release. Some protests and concerns allegedly pushed the authorities to ban the film to avoid a backlash. In its notification, the ministry noted, “Written complaints were received that the film contains highly objectionable material which does not conform with the social values and moral standards of our society and is clearly repugnant to the norms of ‘decency and morality as laid down in Section 9 of the Motion Picture Ordinance, 1979.”

The film was scheduled for theatre release on November 18. The story revolves around a ‘patriarchal family’ wanting to have a baby boy to continue the family line. The youngest son of the family joins an erotic dance theatre secretly. He then falls for a transgender.

The fundamentalists in the country have deemed the movie as anti-Islam. Senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan of Jamaat-e-Islami in the Pakistan Senate said in a tweet, “Pakistan is an Islamic country, and no law, ideology or activity can be allowed against.”

Actors and netizens came forward in support of the film and criticised the ban. They slammed the government for paving the pressure by the fundamentalists against the film. Reportedly, Joyland was the first Pakistani movie to be screened at Cannes Film Festival. It won the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize and Queer Palm award at the festival. Further, it was screened at Toronto International Film Festival and the Busan International Film Festival.

In a statement, Sania Saeed, one of the cast members, said as the film has been banned in Pakistan, it would face hurdles in Oscar nominations. Furthermore, it would be heartbreaking that the people of Pakistan would not be able to see a Pakistani film that received love across the globe, she added.

Another cast member Sarwat Gilani said, “There’s a paid smear campaign doing rounds against #Joyland, a film that made history for Pakistani cinema, got passed by all censor boards, but now authorities are caving in to pressure from some malicious people who have not even seen the film.”

“Shameful that a Pakistani film made by 200 Pakistanis over six years that got standing ovations from Toronto to Cairo to Cannes is being hindered in its own country. Don’t take away this moment of pride and joy from our people!” she added.

The cast of Joyland include Sania Saeed, Ali Junejo, Alina Khan, Sarwat Gilani, Rasti Farooq, Salmaan Peerzada and Sohail Sameer.

‘Will break the hands and bones of Suvendu Adhikari’: Video of TMC leader Akhil Giri threatening BJP leader goes viral

On Friday (November 11), Trinamool Congress Minister Akhil Giri threatened BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari with physical harm after a stage of the ruling party was found vandalised in Nandigram.

In a video that has now surfaced on social media, he was heard saying, “We have seen pictures of people who went up on the TMC stage and destroyed it. I am making a request to the police that we need to nab all the accused, including Suvendu.”

The TMC Minister threatened, “Suvendu is doing a bit too much. He is displaying his might because he has central security. Will break his hand and bones in Nandigram.” As per reports, Akhil Giri is the uncle of Suvendu Adhikari (he had married the now-deceased aunt of the BJP leader).

He claimed that the situation in West Bengal could be brought to a boil only if Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee desired. “We have said this in Netaji Indoor Stadium that if Mamata Banerjee nods her head, then, we will break his (Suvendu’s) bones,” Akhil Giri warned.

“I am giving the police 3 days’ time…If the culprits are not arrested by Tuesday (November 15), then, all the people of Nandigram will gather in one place and teach a befitting lesson to the leader of the rival party (referring to Suvendu Adhikari),” he threatened.

The TMC Minister continued his provocative remarks and warned the Opposition leaders against ‘playing with fire.’ He further reminded them that his party members are capable of violence as they are not adherents of Ramkrishna Mission or Bharat Seva Ashram.

The Background of the Controversy

On Thursday (November 10), both the BJP and the Trinamool Congress observed Martyr’s Day in Nandigram (the constituency of Suvendu Adhikari) in remembrance of those killed by CPI(M) cadres during the Nandigram agitation of 2007.

A day later, the stage of TMC was found vandalised and charred. The party was quick to blame the rival BJP and staged a road blockade for over 10 hours, demanding the arrest of the accused. The BJP, in turn, alleged that the arson was the fallout of infighting within the Trinamool Congress.

On Saturday (November 12) night, the police raided the residence of BJP leader Meghnath Paul in connection to the case. A First Information Report (FIR) was also lodged against Paul and Adhikari.

The BJP has accused the ruling Trinamool Congress of carrying out political vengeance. BJP leader Abhijit Maity said, “On the instructions of the TMC, the police were trying to malign Meghnath Paul and other BJP workers.”

‘Have you looked at her face’: Akhil Giri made derogatory remarks about President Murmu

On Friday, the Trinamool Congress leader also courted controversy after taking potshots at the facial appearance of President Draupadi Murmu. Akhil Giri made the misogynist remarks during a public address in Nandigram town in Purba Medinipur district of West Bengal.

In a video that went viral on social media, he was heard as saying, “He (Suvendu Adhikari) claimed that I don’t look good. How beautiful is Suvendu? We don’t judge people by their appearance. We respect the office of the President (Draupadi Murmu). But have you looked at her face?”

After coming under the line of fire, the TMC legislator tried to rationalise his remarks in the name of an apology. “I respect President. I mentioned the post&made a comparison to respond to Suvendu Adhikari, I didn’t take any name,” Giri said.

“He had said Akhil Giri looks bad in his appearance. I’m a min, took oath to office. If something is said against me, it’s an insult to Constitution. I said ‘President’, I didn’t take anyone’s name,” he continued.

Following outrage by netizens and from political quarters, the Trinamool Congress was forced to issue a clarification and ‘condemn’ the remarks of its party leader.

In a tweet, it said, “We have the utmost respect for Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu. Our party strongly condemns the unfortunate remarks made by MLA Akhil Giri and clarifies that we do not endorse such statements.”

Rajasthan: Terrorists try to blow up railway bridge near Udaipur, track left damaged following the explosion

0

An explosion took place at a bridge on the Udaipur-Ahmedabad railway line on Saturday, November 12, 2022 as an attempt was made to blow up a railway bridge. Following the explosion, the railway track was left with multiple cracks, and gunpowder was later found on the spot. The bridge was dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi less than a fortnight ago.

The explosion occurred at 10 PM on Saturday night as the unidentified suspects targeted the railway bridge and tracks. The explosion took place on a railway bridge near Salumbar Road about 35 km from Udaipur. The sound of detonation was also heard by the locals who reached the spot following the explosion. The train on the line had passed four hours prior to the explosion. Later, the train coming from Ahmedabad to Udaipur was stopped at Dungarpur.

District Collector Tarachand Meena said, “A conspiracy was hatched to blow up the bridge with a detonator. The Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) of Rajasthan Police reached the spot and is investigating the terrorist angle in this incident.” Udaipur SP said, “Looking at the incident, it seems that it has been executed after a lot of planning. The detonator belongs to the Super 90 category.”

Following the explosion, gunpowder was found on the railway line. The iron tracks were found broken in many places. Not only that, nuts and bolts were removed from the railway track. Seeing the seriousness of the situation, the locals informed the administration. After this, trains on this route were stopped.

While speaking to the news agency ANI, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “There was an explosion on a track about 35 kilometers away from Udaipur. The teams of state government ATS, central government NIA, and railways RPF – all of them are there on this site. The moment the information came, everybody reached the site. The investigation is going on. Whosoever has done this kind of destructive activity, will be severely punished. We will go to the logical end. We will make sure that those people who have tried to destroy the track and cause a big accident, will be punished to the logical end.”

He added, “Simultaneously, from the point of view of the passengers, the team to restore the tracks is ready on the site. As soon as the preliminary investigation is done, within 3-4 hours, the trains will start working again.”

He further said, “We think it is very dangerous because of the recent happenings in Udaipur. So we are very concerned about it. We have taken all possible steps. We deployed the maximum possible and the best possible teams to complete the investigation.”

The Udaipur-Ahmedabad train was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 31, 2022. This track had to wait for 6 long years. Earlier, there was a meter gauge (short line), which has been converted into a broad gauge. Rs 1700 crore has been spent on this project.

As SGPC demands release of Sikh prisoners after release of Rajiv Gandhi murder convicts, read how Khalistanis repeatedly attempted to kill him and might have helped LTTE

On November 11, following the Supreme Court’s orders to release convicts of the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) issued a statement and demanded the release of Sikh prisoners. In a statement, SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami questioned why similar release orders were not being passed in the cases of Sikh prisoners.

Dhami added that the community has been demanding the release of Sikh prisoners lodged in different jails for the last three decades, but the governments have not responded positively. He claimed, “There are many such cases in which the governments have been merciful to the prisoners with heinous charges like murder, rape, etc. On the other hand, injustice is being done to the Sikh prisoners.”

Dhami named Devinderpal Singh Bhullar, Gurdeep Singh Khera and Balwant Singh Rajoana in his statement and targeted Delhi Government, Karnataka Government and Central Government, respectively, for not releasing the prisoners. He mentioned Tamil Nadu Government’s recommendation in the release of the assassinations of Rajiv Gandhi and questioned why other state and central governments failed to do the same for the Sikh prisoners. He said, “This discrimination is deeply hurtful to Sikh sentiments, about which governments should be serious.”

Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal echoed the demand. In a tweet, he said, “Is there still a reason for not releasing Bandi Singhs who have completed their jail terms? If GOI needed any const ground to fulfil PM’s promise on Guru Nanak DevJi’s 550th Parkash Purab, SC provided it by setting Rajiv Gandhi’s assassins free. Release Bandi Singhs forthwith.” (Bandi Singhs means Sikh Prisoners.)

Jain Commission Report on Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination attempts

While Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by LTTE, the Khalistanig terrorists also attempted to take his life multiple times. One of the most famous threats given to Gandhi repeatedly by Khalistani terrorists and sympathisers was ‘Oh Rajiv teri maa maari aa, hun teri baari aa’ (Oh Rajiv your mother was killed and now it is your turn). This threat was repeated by several Khalistani terrorists during speeches, addresses and interviews.

Between 1984 and 1991, there were several attempts on Rajiv Gandhi’s life by Khalistani terrorists. The Volume III of The Jain Commission Report on Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination talked about the threats to Gandhi and his security. Chapters 8 to 10 of Volume III had details of Sikh extremists’ attempts on Rajiv Gandhi’s life.

The commission report noted that the threat to Gandhi’s life was from Sikh extremists living in India as well as foreign countries. It also pointed towards the role of Pakistani agencies in threat perception. The report stated that the threat to Gandhi’s life began before he became the Prime Minister and continued after he ceased to hold office.

They reported that following the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the resentment against the Gandhi family among the alienated Sikhs came to focus. The alleged justification of anti-Sikh riots by Gandhi and the hanging of Satwant Singh (convict of Indira Gandhi’s assassination) and Kehar Singh (co-conspirator of Indira Gandhi’s assassination) added to the resentment.

Almost all the Sikh extremists and terrorist groups including Babbar Khalsa, Khalistan Commando Force (KCF), Bhindranwale Tiger Force of Khalistan (BTFK), Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF), International Sikh Youth Federation (ISYF) and others expressed the desire to assassinate him at some point.

Domestic threats and assassination attempts on Rajiv Gandhi’s life

On October 2, 1986, there was an attempt on Gandhi’s life during Gandhi Jayanti but he escaped unhurt. A gunman named Karamjit Singh had fired shots using a country-made gun at Gandhi Samadhi at Raj Ghat, where PM Rajiv Gandhi, President Zail Singh and other dignitaries were present. Several bullets were fired, and Congress MLA Brijender Singh Mowai and former judge Ram Charan Lal were hit. Karamjit Singh was nabbed after he had fired several rounds, most of which missed as he was using a poor-quality country-made gun.

In 1987, a Khalistani terrorist Harjinder Singh Jinda was arrested for the assassination of Congress leader Lalit Maken. During interrogation, he revealed after killing Maken in 1985, he was assigned to assassinate Gandhi, but he could not succeed.

Intelligence Bureau reports suggested that in January 1988, KCF terrorist Daljit Singh visited Delhi along with Sukhdev Singh, Sukhwinder Singh and Kanwaljit Singh to plan an attack on Gandhi. They allegedly procured four 2-inch mortars, 2 rocket launchers, 20 shoulder-firing missiles and 2 115 mm mortar guns from Pakistan. Apart from these deadly weapons, they allegedly got their hands on SMGs or stun guns, LMGs, assorted small weapons and over 150 China-made AK-47 rifles. The plan did not bear any fruit.

The commission report also pointed towards an alleged attempt to blow up an aeroplane in which Gandhi and other VIPs were travelling. Labh Singh’s group of KCF was named in the attempt. They allegedly procured sophisticated weapons from Canada for the attempt on Gandhi’s life.

On March 29, 1988, Gandhi visited Amritsar with other VIPs. As per the commission report, Sikh extremists in their teens allegedly asserted their determination to kill Gandhi. As per Financial Times correspondent John Eliot, Giani Jagir Singh of Golden Temple asserted they would kill Rajiv and Ribeiro. A large cache of weapons, including RPG-7 rockets, AK-47 rifles, and explosive devices, were recovered from the possession of extremists.

In May 1988, a Khalistani terrorist identified as Gurbax Singh Sahota alias Budha visited Punjab to attempt the assassination of Gandhi.

Prominent Khalistani terrorists whose names came to the fore at that time were Gurnam Singh Bundala, Member Council of Khalistan and Convenor of All Indian Sikh Students Federation(AISSF), Dr Jagdish Singh Buttar(AISSF) and Sukhdev Singh Jhamke (KCF). Suicide squads from Jalandhar, Tarn Taran and Bathinda, were reportedly formed for the assassination attempt. Furthermore, underground members of AISSF, Subeh Singh and Jagjit Singh, were assigned tasks to create disturbance in Bathinda to cause distraction and plan attacks on VVIPs.

In 1988, there was an indication that Sikh extremists based in Pakistan got hold of 2 to 6 stringer missiles that they allegedly procured from Afghan Mujahideens. Adequate protection for then-PM Gandhi’s aircraft was provided in light of the threat.

In August 1988, intelligence agencies received input that a group of 63 infiltrants entered India to make an attempt on the lives of Gandhi and Buta Singh by the end of October 1988.

In September 1988, when Gandhi was scheduled to visit Punjab, there were intelligence reports that suggested KCF had communicated with its members that Gandhi might visit Golden Temple secretly. Later, KCF was assigned the task of eliminating Gandhi if he visited the Golden Temple Complex. Reportedly, Rs 4 lakh to Rs 5 lakh might have been offered to Punjab Police personnel to place an explosive device under the rostrum from where Gandhi was scheduled to deliver his address. There were alleged plans by Panthic Committee and KCF to blow up a vehicle in the vicinity of PM’s route during his visit to Punjab.

In December 1988, arms and ammunition were allegedly smuggled into India to attempt the assassination of Gandhi on January 26, 1989. The attempt was not fruitful.

In January 1989, Jaswinder Singh Hundal of the Khalistan movement in North America and a member of ISYF attempted to enter India to conspire with the assassination of Gandhi.

In February 1989, it came to light that two Air Force Personnel from IAF station Ambala were approached by a “common friend” in 1985 at a marriage party. The commission report noted, “they had shown their keenness to serve “cause of Sikh Panth” by attempting the life of former PM.”

In April 1989, Ajit Singh Qadian of AISSE declared the days of Rajiv Gandhi were numbered while talking to a group of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU). In the same month, Pakistan-based leaders of BTFK allegedly asked its cadres in India to use 6KM to 8KM range missiles to cause damage to PM House, Parliament House, Hindu localities and Connaught Place in Delhi.

In July 1989, so-called Area Commander Bakshish Singh of KLF received a letter from one Sarbjit Singh, who expressed his keenness to assassinate Rajiv Gandhi provided he was given Rs 5 crores and weapons.

In December 1990, 24 Sikhs from Punjab were allegedly sent to New Delhi to assassinate prominent personalities, with Gandhi being the prime target. However, attempts were neutralised by the security forces. It came to light that a BTEK (Manochahal group) terrorist Satnam Singh was tasked to assassinate Gandhi.

Babbar Khalsa terrorists in allegiance to gangs of Madha Singh, Dharam Singh Kashtiwal and Sukhdev Singh Chhabra were allegedly assigned the task to attempt the assassination of Gandhi during the election campaign in Delhi. Babbar Khalsa group in the UK also allegedly planned the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi and his son Rahul Gandhi using unconventional methods, including poisonous gloves.

On May 14, 1991, Harpreet Singh Rangi and Sukhbeer Singh Khanna attempted the assassination of Gandhi but failed. They had attended two public election rallies at Shahdara, New Delhi and then at Faridabad. Khalistan National Army was believed to be behind the attempts.

Two incidents were crucial before the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi. On May 17, 1991, a public meeting that Jagdish Tytler was addressing was attacked. On May 19, 1991, Congress leader Sajjan Kumar was attacked by Khalistani terrorists. Two police personnel and a bystander were killed. Following the incidents, the Intelligence Bureau recommended NSG escort Rajiv Gandhi on May 20, 1991. Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on May 21, 1991, while the process to provide him NSG escort was underway.

Foreign threats and assassination attempts on Rajiv Gandhi’s life

There were several attempts on Rajiv Gandhi’s life in foreign land too.

In January 1985, the Federal Bureau of Investigation found out that Khalistani terrorists based in New York were planning to assassinate Rajiv Gandhi. They aimed to bomb strategic locations, including nuclear plants in India. Three terrorists, identified as Gurpratap Singh Birk, Lal Singh and Ammand Singh, were found to be attempting to train cadres in the USA in the use of explosives, automatic weapons, chemical warfare and urban guerilla tactics. Reportedly, they were trying to get in touch with suppliers of C4 explosives and machine guns in India. In its report, the FBI said Gurpratap Singh Birk, Lal Singh and Ammand Singh were booked on charges of conspiracy to assassinate Rajiv Gandhi while he was in the US. Birk was convicted of seven years of imprisonment for conspiracy to carry military enterprise against India but acquitted on the count of attempting assassination of Gandhi as the evidence was found to be weak.

In April 1985, the FBI found out that the leader of a terrorist group attended the ‘World Sikh Conference’ in London. He started a campaign to arrange Gandhi’s assassination during his US visit and was willing to pay USD 60,000.

In June 1985, Gandhi had planned to visit Paris. There were plans to observe a hunger strike by the Sikhs and submit a memorandum to him. However, there were also rumours that there might be a possible attempt on Gandhi’s life. The French Authorities took effective preventive action against the threat.

In October 1985, an assassination attempt on Gandhi was unearned by British Police during his 2-day visit to the UK. Jarnail Singh Ranuana, Parmatma Singh Marwaha, Harminder Singh Rai and Sukhwinder Singh Gill were arrested in the matter. Ranuana was sentenced to 16 years, and Gill was sentenced to 14 years. However, the other two were acquitted.

Another plot was unearthed by British Police where an unknown Sikh had approached a British soldier to kill someone for a large sum of money. It was unclear if it was for Gandhi or someone else.

In November-December 1987, Panthic Committee member Wassan Singh Jaffarwal allegedly visited Pakistan and sought their support to send infiltrators in the guise of Hindus to kill Gandhi. The committee allegedly attempted to approach the Israeli government to hire Israeli commandos to attack VIPs in India and on foreign land.

In May 1988, a rally was organised by Damdami Taksal, Jatha Bhindran, ISYF, Council of Khalistan, Dal Khalsa and World Sikh Organisation at Hyde Park, London, to protest against Indian security forces’ action at Golden Temple (Operation Black Thunder II). Threats to Rajiv Gandhi’s life were issued during the rally.

During Gandhi’s visit to Pakistan to attend SAARC Summit, there were reports of a possible attempt on his life by Babbar Khalsa’s Talwinder Singh Parmar.

In October 1990, a close-door meeting was allegedly held at New Castle, UK. It was attended by Tarsem Singh Pattar, General Secretary of the ISYF(N), UK, Daljit Singh Shergill, Lakhwinder Sikh Malhi, Hardesh Singh (Norway) and one Malwinder Singh from the Federal Republic of Germany. During the meeting, they discussed the possibility of attempting the assassination of Gandhi during electioneering.

The nexus between LTTE and Khalistani terrorists

As per the Jain Commission report, Intelligence reports suggested that the links between LTTE and Khalistani terrorists flourished as early as 1987. As per the information provided by RAW, “Some unidentified Sri Lankan Tamils in Oslo sympathetic to the LTTE have also come to notice for trying to establish contact with Sikhs there. In a recent conversation with the Sikhs, they reportedly sought to blame our Prime Minister for the recent developments and suggested the latter should be killed.”

The founder of the Khalistan movement, Jagjit Singh Chohan, had allegedly tried to bring all militant groups under one roof to fight the Indian government. As per the commission report, two LTTE representatives met him in London on January 22, 1988, to know his position in terms of an armed struggle. Chohan allegedly assured them to form a common policy for Sikhs, Tamils and Muslims.

In early 1988, young Khalistani extremists in Southall, UK, had allegedly approached LTTE extremists to procure weapons for Khalistani extremists in India, but it was not fruitful.

Though there were no clear indications that Khalistani terror groups provided support to the LTTE to assassinate Gandhi, the timeline of attacks on Congress leaders, repeated attempts on Gandhi’s life and the nexus between Khalistani elements and LTTE might point towards the possibility.

Amid divorce rumours, Pakistan-based OTT platform Urduflix announces reality show featuring Sania Mirza and Shoaib Malik

The couple, Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik and Indian tennis player Sania Mirza, who made headlines last week for their separation, have now thrown their fans in surprise and puzzled. Reportedly the two will shortly be seen together on a reality show, even though the pair have not confirmed nor rejected the divorce rumours.

The show will stream on the OTT platform Urduflix and has the working title of ‘The Mirza Malik Show.’ Urduflix made the announcement on Instagram and tagged Sania and Shoaib. UrduFlix is Pakistan’s Urdu over-the-top (OTT) platform. The company posted a picture of the athletes on its Instagram account with the caption “The Mirza Malik Show very soon only on Urduflix.”

Sania is shown standing with her hand on Shoiab’s shoulder on the poster. The Burj Khalifa may be seen in the backdrop visuals. Currently, the pair is living in Dubai.

Urduflix is a Pakistan-based OTT platform which streams various shows that include Pakistani, Iranian, Arabic, Turkish etc content. It claims to be Pakistan’s first Urdu OTT platform.

While their fans are overjoyed by the news, others are also questioning whether the divorce rumour is a PR gimmick to promote the show. A fan wrote, “So divorce was for publicity purposes. Shame!” Another Instagram user commented, “But I heard they are divorced. What about that?” Replying to this comment, another user wrote, “It was all a publicity stunt to generate fame and money. Like always they achieved that!!!”

Sania Mirza and Shoaib Malik moved to Dubai after getting married in 2010. Izhaan, their son, was born in 2018. According to rumors, Shoaib Malik was cheating on Sania Mirza. Ayesha Omar, a model from Pakistan, has been connected to him. According to Pakistani media reports last week, the two are finalizing the legal processes to dissolve their marriage.

Don’t be surprised by the misogyny of Akhil Giri, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee herself has been accused of trivialising rape on multiple occasions

Trinamool Congress Minister Akhil Giri is under the spotlight for his misogynist remarks against President Droupadi Murmu, who is the first member of the tribal community to hold the post of the Indian President.

Giri, who serves as the Minister for Correctional Administration, was recently heard as saying, “He (Suvendu Adhikari) claimed that I don’t look good. How beautiful is Suvendu? We don’t judge people by their appearance. We respect the office of the President (Draupadi Murmu). But have you looked at her face?”

His derogatory remarks have drawn the ire of social media users and politicians alike, who are now questioning the party for harbouring such a Minister.

Trinamool Congress has a history of misogynist behaviour, even though some of the party leaders are known to mouth platitudes about women’s empowerment. A big part of the problem is the TMC supremo herself, who has a history of victim blaming and has been accused of trivialising heinous crimes such as rape.

In April this year, TMC supremo Banerjee downplayed the brutal rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl in Nadia’s Hanskhali village. She claimed that ‘everyone was aware of the girl’s love affair, so one was left to wonder here whether it was an actual rape or pregnancy that went wrong’.

“As a layman, I am saying where would someone get the evidence of whether the girl was actually raped or pregnant. Or was there any other reason, like someone beat her up or she died of some illness?” Banerjee remarked.

“There was a love affair for sure, her family knew about it, and their neighbours also knew about it. Now if a girl and a boy love each other, I cannot punish them”, she cast aspersions on the case.

The West Bengal Chief Minister blatantly attempted to trivialise statutory rape, only because the prime accused in the case was the son of Trinamool Congress (TMC) Gajna Gram Panchayat member Samar Gowla.

The Infamous Park Street Case

From time to time, Mamata Banerjee had tried to insinuate that rape cases in West Bengal were motivated by political vendetta. She has often accused victims of lying and staging a ‘rape’ to defame her government.

The most glaring example of such problematic behaviour has been her remarks in the aftermath of the 2012 Park Street rape case. An Anglo-Indian woman, by the name Suzette Jordan, was raped in a moving car by five men on February 6, 2012, when she was returning home from Park Street in Kolkata.

Soon after the news surfaced, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee absolved the accused of all charges. She had dubbed the incident as ‘shajano ghotona‘ (concocted incident) that was allegedly ‘designed to malign the government.’

Three years later in 2015, a Kolkata Court upheld the rape charges in the Park Street case and found accused Nasir Khan, Ruman Khan and Sumit Bajaj guilty.

When Mamata Banerjee blamed malls and multiplexes for rise in rape cases

After another rape case in Burdwan’s Katwa in the same year, Mamata Banerjee again dismissed the rape allegations, even before the investigation was concluded.

“A political party is doing all this, shouting rape. They are playing this drama. Harmader diye natok shajachhe jatey Banglar nam kharap hochhe (They are staging an act to give a bad name to West Bengal)”, she was heard as saying.

In 2013, during a debate in the West Bengal legislative assembly about the rising cases of rapes in the State, the CM insinuated that it was due to an increase in the population of the State. She had also blamed modernisation, an increase in shopping malls and multiplexes for rising rape cases.

Akhil Giri gets away with mere lip service

When Mamata Banerjee herself has made disparaging comments about rape victims, it, therefore, comes as no surprise why Akhil Giri was able to get away after mocking the physical appearance of President Droupadi Murmu.

TMC brushed off its responsibility by putting out a tweet of ‘condemnation’ and not taking any concrete action against its motormouth leader. And this bolstered the politician to use his apology to further rationalise his statements.

“I respect President. I mentioned the post & made a comparison to respond to Suvendu Adhikari, I didn’t take any name. He had said Akhil Giri looks bad in his appearance. I’m a Minister, took oath to office. If something is said against me, it’s an insult to Constitution. I said ‘President’, I didn’t take anyone’s name,” he had justified.

For all those who are outraged by the remarks of Akhil Giri, there is little hope of grievance redressal within the Mamata Banerjee-led-Trinamool Congress since the culture pretty much stems from the top.
