Close on the heels of the Dumka case where minor girl Anita (name changed) was set ablaze by one Shahrukh for not reciprocating his advances, another minor girl from tribal community was found dead, hanging from a tree. The postmortem report has now revealed that she was carrying a foetus of four months. The minor girl belonged to Raneshwar Police Station area and was found hanging from a tree.
As per a report in Lagatar24, the minor girl worked as daily wage earner and was allegedly sexually abused by Arman Ansari who is a Raj Mistri. She was missing from past three days.
However, as per news agency ANI, while the postmortem has been conducted, the report is yet to be made available to them.

BJP MP Nishikant Dubey said that these kind of crimes indicate Islamisation of Jharkhand and suggested that investigation into the identity of the accused would reveal that he is from outside of India. As per reports, the accused, Arman Ansari has been arrested.
BJP leader Kapil Mishra has said that in this case, the accused Arman Ansari had given a fake name to the girl to befriend her.

On Saturday morning, authorities in Mississippi, US had a major scare after a pilot who hijacked an aeroplane threatened to smash the plane into a Walmart store in the Tupelo City of Mississippi. The Tupelo police evacuated the Walmart following the threat. However, the drama ended peacefully, as informed by Governor Tate Reeves after the pilot landed the plane in a field.

Benton County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to the local news that the plane landed in Ashland, in Benton County, Mississippi. The suspect is now in the custody of the Benton County Sheriff’s Department. The suspect has been identified as Cory Patterson from Shannon, Mississippi. Patterson circled in the air for around 4 hours before landing the plane. He was flying a fixed-wing multi-engine 1987 Beech C90A aircraft, believed to be stolen. He was flying alone and there was nobody else onboard the plane, confirmed FAA after the plane landed.

Reportedly, Cory Patterson worked for a company that is contracted to maintain planes at the airport, including fueling the planes. The plane he stole was refuelled at the airport last night, and he flew with it in the early morning finding an opportunity. Authorities believe that he landed the plane because it had run out of fuel. The Beech King aircraft has a fuel tank enabling it to fly for around 5 hours.

Earlier, the town of Tupelo was sent into a state of panic after the pilot hijacked an airplane and threatened to smash the plane into a Walmart store in the city. The Tupelo Police Department said the pilot contacted them at 5 a.m. and said that he is going to crash the plane into the Walmart store. The Tupelo police said that the store had been evacuated following the threat. Around five in the morning, the jet began to circle, and for more than four hours, it was in the air.
The local police warned everyone to avoid the area as the damage from any kind of crash into the Walmart store would have extended to several places in the area. Several government agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, are now engaged in the inquiry and trying to determine a purpose.

Authorities claimed to have spoken with the Beechcraft King Air 90 pilot personally who is intending to deliberately crash the aircraft. The police wrote in a notice published on Facebook, “Citizens are asked to avoid that area until an all clear is given. With the mobility of an airplane of that type, the danger zone is much larger than even Tupelo.”
The pilot has since been identified as Cory Patterson of Shannon, Mississippi. Patterson shared a message on Facebook saying that he never wanted to hurt anyone and that he loved his family. However later that post was deleted. A screenshot of the message is given below.

The plane flying above the Mississippi city was visible in a video posted by the news network BNO. According to a report, the aircraft had departed the Tupelo area’s airspace and was now flying close to a Toyota production factory in the nearby Blue Springs.

Mississippi governor Tate Reeves said, “State law enforcement and emergency managers are closely tracking this dangerous situation. All citizens should be on alert and aware of updates from the Tupelo Police Department.”
IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) has denied media reports that separate GST is applicable for using washrooms in waiting rooms of Railway stations. The Corporation have clarified that a flat rate is charged, including GST, for using executive lounges, and several services are included in this amount, including the use of toilets and urinals. It is notable that IRCTC manages the executive lounges at major railway stations.
Today several media houses published a sensational report claiming that two British nationals were charged Rs 112 per head, including 12% GST, for using urinals at the Agra Cantt Railway station. The reports stated that the two tourists had reached Agra Cantt from Delhi via Gatiman Express Train, where they were received by a tour guide.
In the railway station, they expressed their desire to use the urinal, and the guide took them to the railway washroom. But they had to pay Rs 224 for using the urinal, Rs 112 per head, the reports claimed. It was mentioned that while the charge for using the urinal is Rs 200 for two persons, 12% GST was added and the total charge became Rs 224.
The reports claimed that using the washroom at the Agra Cantt Railway station proved costly for the tourists as they had to pay Rs 224 even though they spent just 5 minutes there and they used only the urinals.
However, now IRCTC has issued a clarification saying that the entire episode was misreported by the media. The corporation has clarified that the British tourists had used Executive Lounge at Agra Cantt Railway station which is a paid service, and there is no separate charge for only using washrooms at the Executive Lounges. As the British tourists had visited the Executive Lounge, they were charged the applicable charge for it, IRCTC clarified.
IRCTC said that the entry charge for using the Executive Lounge is Rs. 200 per person for 2 hours, along with 12% GST. The charges include unlimited services in the Air-Conditioned Executive Lounge like TV, comfortable Recliner Seating, Free Water, WiFi, Beverages (Tea-Coffee), washroom facility etc. It is up to the passengers whether they use only one, some or all of these facilities after paying the standard entry charges & entering the Lounge.
The Railway body also pointed out that Washroom facilities are also available ‘FREE OF COST’ at 1st Class & Sleeper Class waiting rooms at stations, implying that the British tourists could have visited those waiting rooms, and they could have used the urinals there without any payment. It is possible that the tourists were not aware of the free washrooms and the guide took them to the Executive Lounge. Here it is notable that apart from free washrooms attached to the waiting rooms, most Railway Stations also have separate pay-and-use washrooms, where the charge for latrine is Rs 2, bathroom charge is Rs 5, but the use of urinals in those facilities is also free of cost.
With regard to the reported incident, IRCTC informed that the two foreigners were informed about the facilities available at the Executive Lounge, and the entry charge for the same. They reiterated that 12% GST is the standard tax for the entry charge, and there is no separate charge of tax for individual services available in the Lounges.
Several recent reports have shown that demography is changing rapidly along India’s border with Nepal. The number of mosques and madarasas is constantly increasing. From August 20 to 27, 2022, an OpIndia team visited several areas in Nepal bordering India to observe the ground situation. What follows here is the first episode of the series of reports documenting the facts noticed by the OpIndia team.
The Dang district in Nepal falls in the Lumbini state. We entered Dang from the Jarwa border in the Balrampur district of Uttar Pradesh. Vehicles were not allowed to cross the border. We walked about one and a half kilometres to reach the border of Dang. During this time, we had to go through security checks by the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and the Nepal Police. This border is situated in dense forests. Our first stop was Koilabas village in the Dang district.
The very first village in Nepal had a Muslim Sarpanch
Abdul Khaliq is the village head (Sarpanch) of the Koilabas village. Villagers informed that no Hindu candidate even contested the election in this village housing approximately 1100 voters. Abdul Khaliq said, “Saddam won the election last time. He is from the Maoist party. The village has an equal population of Muslims and Hindus.”
Koilabas is the first village in Nepal after crossing the border.
Indian Maulavis and students in the Nepali Madarasas receiving government grants
Abdul Khaliq informed us that the Nepal government gives funds and grants to the madarasa in his village. He said, “In addition to the normal course, religious training is also necessary to maintain well-being. Teachers are appointed by locals in the village madrasa. Their expenses are borne by the government. There are 2 maulvis from India to teach children in the Islamia madarsa of the village.”
Village head Abdul Khaliq added, “Many clerics have gone to India after getting religious training from here. There are maulvis in Nepal too, but we get Indian clerics cheaply. They also get better salaries here than in India. There are many maulvis in the Garhwa and Lamhi areas of the Dang district. There are also madarasas and mosques in these places. Most of Nepal’s maulanas and maulvis are also involved in many types of trade.”
According to Abdul Khaliq, the Koilabas madarasa houses Indian students in addition to the Indian teachers. Most of them are from Bihar and West Bengal. Among these Indian students going to Nepal for religious studies, there are many girl students as well. They get free accommodation and food.
Abdul Khaliq informed us that he is not the only Muslim Sarpanch in that area. He told that Muslim village heads and Muslim lawmakers can be seen even in the interior parts of Nepal. To give an example, he named Nasaruddin Khan who is presently the Education Minister of the Lumbini state of Nepal. Besides, Mohammed Lalbabu Raut Gaddi, Fauziya Naseem, and Mohammed Yakub Ansari are important political figures in the Lumbini state.

Muslims draw the major chunk of benefits of the government schemes
In the Dang district, a board of those who get the benefits of government schemes has been installed by the government. As mentioned on the board, a total of 839 people have benefited in the Garhwa region under a scheme run by the government. Out of these 839 total people, the number of Muslims getting these benefits is 602. Besides, 39 tribals and 198 others got the benefits of the scheme.

A century-old mosque
About 1 kilometre after entering the Dang area, we saw a large mosque adjacent to the road. The mosque is right next to the Jhulangi bridge, Dang’s most popular tourist destination. Abdul Ahad, a local resident, told us that the mosque is more than 100 years old. Ahad also pointed out that some more mosques and madarasas in Koilabas have come up recently.

A few words were written in Arabic outside the mosque. Abdul Ahad described it as a prayer to be recited before entering the mosque. Abdul Ahad was accompanied by his relative Tauseef. After going a little away from this mosque, we saw another place of worship located a little away from the main road. There was also a Muslim-dominated colony around, in which stray goats and chickens were seen.

Muslim shopkeepers dominate the market
Most of the shops in Koilabas belong to Muslims. Right next to the Jhulangi bridge is Niyamat Ali’s shop where he sells tea and cold drinks. Abdul Ahad works as a cloth merchant. Abdul Vakil’s shop of chips and pan-masala was seen on the main highway. Abdul Vakil’s wife, who runs the shop, said that one of the two mosques in Koilabas belongs to the Muslims of the Ahal-e-hadith sect. The second mosque is for Sunni Muslims.
As we walked ahead, we met Mohammed Kamal and Mohammed Saddam. Both of them told that they have a business of mobile phones. They said that the SIM of Nepali telecom company ‘Namaste’ sells the most.
Empty houses bearing Hindu symbols and misconceptions on NRC
In the Dang district, we found many deserted and ruined houses. Babbu Kasaudhan, who once lived here, said, “Gone are the days when Koilabas was a Hindu-majority place. After 1995, our business suffered a lot due to Maoist violence. When trade and business were finished, we came to India. Hindus left the area with their entire family and settled in India. At the same time, only a few members of Muslim households left the family and went out to earn. For this reason, the area has now become Muslim-majority. All the empty houses in the area near the lane of the Ram Janaki Temple belong to Hindus.”

We also saw a house with a Swastika sign on it. ‘Shubh-Labh’ was also written on the walls of the house. But at the same house, some lines in Arabic were also written by scraping the wall. The Hindu name written on the door was also blackened. Talking about this, Babbu said, “For the last 3-4 times, a Muslim person is holding the post of the village head of Koilabas continuously. Now that Hindus are not there, who knows what someone is writing in their homes?”
According to Babbu Kasaudhan, many people of the Hindu community were misguided about the National Register of Citizens and they are afraid of the rule because they were told that they would not be allowed to stay in India as they own some land in Nepal. According to Babbu, this was also a major reason for Hindus selling out their lands in Nepal and going to India.
Scars of the Maoist violence
We saw a police station in a ruined state. A Passersby told us that Maoists had hurled a bomb at the police post in 2002. Six policemen were killed in that attack. Since then, the post remains deserted. However, the Nepal police’s identification mark is still visible on the walls of the ruined police station.

Don’t click photos, it is prohibited in Islam
During our journey, we spotted 2 youths sitting by the roadside. As we tried to click their photos, they asked us to shut off the cameras. One of them was named Asif Siddiqui. He said, “We are from the Islamic State. Photos and videos are prohibited in our Islam. Till date, I have not taken a single photo or video. I have studied in madarasa till Class 8. There is no government job in Nepal, so I am preparing to go abroad.”
It was not just a few local Muslims who tried to stop us from coverage. Nepal’s police also refused to allow us shoot video and do photography. A police officer, called ‘Gautam Sir’, asked us not to do any kind of coverage.
On Saturday, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) admonished the West Bengal government for putting the people’s health at risk by failing to handle solid and liquid waste generated in the state and issued a Rs 3,500 crore penalty for the enormous gap in solid and liquid waste generation and treatment.
The directive was issued after NGT monitored state and union territory compliance with the Municipal Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, and other environmental issues.
The green panel stated that the state government does not appear to prioritise the installation of sewage and solid waste management facilities, despite the fact that the state budget for 2022-2023 includes a provision of Rs 12,818.99 crore for Urban Development and Municipal Affairs.
Observing that health issues cannot be deferred indefinitely, a bench led by NGT Chairperson Justice A K Goel said that it is the constitutional responsibility of the state and local municipal authorities to maintain a pollution-free environment.
West Bengal government cannot use lack of funds as an excuse to deprive the citizens of their basic human rights: NGT
The NGT highlighted that, despite a sewage generation capacity of 2,758 million litres per day in West Bengal’s metropolitan areas and a treatment capacity of 1505.85 MLD (by establishing 44 STPs), only 1268 MLD is reported to be treated, leaving a huge gap of 1490 MLD.
Coming down hard at the state government, the tribunal stated that the government cannot use lack of funds as an excuse to deprive the citizens of their basic human rights, which it said is the “absolute liability of the state”.
While there may be no objection to any central funds being availed, the state cannot avoid its responsibility or delay its discharge on that pretext, it said.
“Considering the damage to the recipient environment, we hold that apart from ensuring compliance at the earliest, compensation has to be paid by the state for past violations,” it said.
“Final amount of compensation under the two heads (solid and liquid waste) is assessed at Rs. 3,500 crores which may be deposited by the state of West Bengal in a separate ring-fenced account within two months,” the bench said, adding that if the violations continue, the state will be liable to pay additional compensation.
“Compliance with environmental norms on the subject of waste management has to be a high priority. Tribunal has come across cases of serious neglect and continuing damage to the environment in absence of inadequate steps for treatment of solid and liquid waste.”
“We are of the view that issues have been identified and monitored by the tribunal for a long time. It is high time that the state realises its duty to the law and to citizens and adopts further monitoring at its own level,” the bench said.
While India is still reeling from the gruesome murder of a teenage girl in Dumka, another shocking incident has come to light from the same place in Jharkhand. Babulal Marandi, former Chief Minister of the state and leader of opposition in the current assembly, shared the news that a 14-year-old tribal girl was raped and hanged from a tree by a certain Arman Ansari.
Sharing the news, Marandi asked how many more tribal girls will become a victim of such monsters in the state.

Marandi further shared that the girl was just 14 years old and had become a victim of the “jihadi” desires of Arman Ansari. He also said that it could be an international ring of Love Jihad that is behind her murder. He also alleged that CM Hemant Soren is trying to protect the perpetrators of such crimes.

This is not the first gruesome murder to come to light from Dumka recently. Late last month, a teenage girl was burnt alive while sleeping in her home by Shahrukh Hussain and his friend for ignoring his advances. As per reports, DUmka is becoming a hub of such cases thanks to indoctrination by banned Jihadi organisations from Bangladesh.
Dutch legislator Geert Wilders, who has been vocal in condemning Islamist atrocities across the world, had recently asked cutting questions to the Dutch government about the violence against Hindus in Bangladesh and India and the continuous hounding of former BJP leader Nupur Sharma over her remarks on Prophet Muhammad.
Seeking responses from the Dutch government, Wilders asked 12 biting questions, ranging from incidents of violence by Muslims against Hindus to the exaggeration of incidents of violence against Muslims by the media while downplaying it when the perpetrators were Muslims, to violent attacks faced by Hindus in Bangladesh and India and the ceaseless stream of death threats received by Nupur Sharma.
“Are you aware of the horrific violent attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh? What is your opinion on this? Are you aware these attacks are carried out by Muslims? What is your opinion on this?” Wilders asked the Dutch government over the continuous stream of heart-rending reports from Bangladesh, where instances of Islamists attacking the Hindu minorities have risen dramatically in the last few years.
When asked if the government is aware that reports of violence against Muslims are often widely reported in the media while violence by Muslims against others is often downplayed, the Netherlands government said, “It is not up to the cabinet to make a judgment about the relative frequency with which specific violence receives attention in the media. As indicated, the right of everyone to make his or her philosophical or religious choices is an important part of Dutch human rights policy. In that context, the cabinet monitors religious violence worldwide, regardless of the motives or background of the perpetrators.
It further added, “Annually, the cabinet answers Parliamentary questions in response to reports from the organisation Open Doors regarding religious persecution in many countries. In those answers, the cabinet will, according to its ability, address numbers, frequency, causes and motives. In 2021, the situation in India was also addressed.”
On being asked if the Dutch government stands in support of Nupur Sharma, the former BJP spokesperson who was provoked into stating facts about Mohammed in a TV debate earlier this year, triggering a wave of protests by Islamists who called for her beheading and issued death threats against her, the government said, “The cabinet is familiar with the statements made by Ms Nupur Sharma and strongly disapproves of the death threats against her. The decision of whether or not to prosecute her is up to the Indian judicial authorities. Currently, Nupur Sharma is not being prosecuted and the Indian Supreme Court has issued a temporary measure protecting her from arrest.”
The Dutch government also disapproved of the horrifying murder of Kanhaiya Lal, a Hindu tailor hacked to death by Islamists in Udaipur for merely standing in support of Nupur Sharma. “The cabinet is aware of this, and strongly disapproves of the horrific violence. This murder has also been condemned by parties across the width of the Indian political spectrum. The perpetrators were arrested shortly after the murder, and will be tried under Indian criminal law,” the Dutch parliament said in response to Wilders’ question.
The Cabinet also condemned death threats issued to Geert Wilders for voicing his support for Nupur Sharma. “Threats, especially those to democratically elected politicians, are unacceptable and have no place in the Dutch democratic legal order,” the government said.
“The Netherlands, directly and through the EU, calls attention to the rights of all persons regardless of their religion or identity, and the responsibility of governments in this regard. Special attention is paid to protecting the freedom of expression and the freedom of religion and belief. The improvement of human rights in Bangladesh is the subject of both bilateral and EU political consultations, as well as visits by the Human Rights Ambassador (planned for 2023),” said the response by the Dutch government on the question of whether they openly support the Hindus in Bangladesh and India and other countries, and to contact the governments of Bangladesh and India to ensure that Hindus are protected against Islamist violence.
Responding to the question of whether the Dutch government would plead with the governments of India and Bangladesh for the safety of Hindus, it said, “The Netherlands advocates an inclusive society, in which the rights of minority groups, equality and freedom of expression and freedom of religion and belief are guaranteed.”
“It may be added that next September the United Nations General Assembly is organizing a special “High-Level Meeting” in honour of the thirtieth anniversary of the Declaration on the Rights of Persons Belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities. This provides a good opportunity for a global evaluation,” the Dutch government said.
Geert Wilders stands in support of Hindus, Nupur Sharma; receives death threats from Islamists
It is worth noting that this is not the first time that Geert Wilders has voiced his support for Hindus in Bangladesh and India, and former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma.
On June 14, the Dutch politician extended support to Nupur Sharma saying that he respected and supported Hinduism more than he did Islam. “Cultural relativism is a misleading concept. People are equal but cultures are not. A culture based on humanity and freedom is always better than a culture based on intolerance and submission”, he has tweeted. In another such tweet, he had clearly mentioned that Nupur Sharma had done nothing wrong. “If I can help her in any possible way, I will”, he had added.
Soon after extending support, Wilders received death threats to assassinate him as soon as possible. Sharing multiple screenshots of threats, the Dutch MP had said, “So this is what I get supporting the brave Nupur Sharma. Hundreds of death threats. It makes me even more determined and proud of supporting her. For evil may never win. Never. #IsupportNupurSharma”.
Days after the arrest of the second accused named Naeem Ansari in the murder case involving a minor, the Jharkhand police have made shocking revelations about the accused. The investigating officer in the case said that Naeem was highly influenced by a banned Islamic Jihadi organization from Bangladesh named Ansar-ul-Bangla.
According to the reports, the Police confiscated the mobile phone of the accused and traced the suspected contacts from his phone list. The Police, after checking Naeem’s phone, said that he often used to watch the activities of Ansar-ul-Bangla on his mobile. Naeem is a resident of Jaruwadih Mohalla of Dumka and works as a painter.
He used to watch the jihadi activities of the banned Bangladeshi organization and was highly influenced by their content. Reports mention that the main objective of the banned organisation is to incite Islamic men to trap non-Islamic women in a love affair, marry them, and further force them to convert to Islam.
Team Dainik Bhasker conducted an exclusive investigation in the case to learn that there are many non-Islamic girls in several areas of Dumka, Jharkhand including Pakuda, Godda, Dangalpada, Saanidangal, Jaruvaadih, and Banderjodi who have been duped by the Islamists. These women were further forced by Islamic men to marry and convert to Islam.
One of the victim women residing in the Saanidangal area of Dumka talked to team Dainik Bhasker. She said that she fell in love with a man, later she learned that the man she loved was an Islamist. “He forced me to marry him. I was left with no other option. Now, it’s been 10 years that we are married. Our children have also started going to school”, she said.
The father of another victim lady residing in the Gandhi Nagar area of Dumka said that his daughter was similarly cheated by an Islamist. “She fell in love with the man and left us to marry him. This happened 8 years ago. Later she came to know that he belonged to some other religion, but by then she was left with no option but to marry the man”, he added.
Reports mention that many Islamists residing in the area are influenced by Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh. Popular Front of India, and Ansar-ul-Bangla. The Jharkhand Home Department took cognizance of this and discovered that illegal Bangladeshi migrants were residing in the areas like Shaibganj and Pakur and they possessed fake identity cards including voter ID, Aadhaar cards, and driving licenses.
Advocate Priya Dutta Singh from Dumka confirmed that there is an organized gang involving illegal migrants who trap minor girls from Dumka in love affairs and force them to convert to Islam. “This happens more in Dangalpara, Dudhani, Bandarjodi and Jaruwadiha of Dumka. I am sure if the police conduct a proper investigation in the case, they’ll discover shocking facts”, she added.
The 15-year-old minor was a resident of Dumka and was burnt alive by two accused named Shahrukh and Naeem. The accused allegedly poured petrol on her from the window of her bedroom when she was fast asleep. She was taken to the hospital shortly after the incident and on August 28, she succumbed to her burn injuries.
Earlier, Naeem, the second accused in the case had confessed to the Police that he was supporting prime accused Shahrukh at every step in his harassment of the now deceased minor. During the interrogation of Naeem, he stated that Shahrukh was his best friend and that they both had met on the evening of August 22 (hours before the attack). He said that Shahrukh was upset as the girl was not responding positively to his (Shahrukh) friendship.
“Shahrukh told me that he would burn her if she refuses to talk to him”, Naeem had said during the interrogation. He further confessed that he supported Shahrukh’s idea saying that it was the only punishment she deserved.
The Police have arrested both the accused and have also collected evidence against them. The Police confirmed that the accused Shahrukh knew the girl for a long time and used to harass her frequently.
Meanwhile, condemning the murder, the Dumka District Advocates Association has decided not to fight the case of both the accused. President Vijay Kumar Singh said that the union has decided not to take the case of the accused. A condolence meeting will be held on September 3 at 3 pm to pay tribute to the girl.
Recently, we saw how Congress leaders created mayhem, throwing the national capital out of gear simply because the Enforcement Directorate called Rahul and Sonia Gandhi for questioning in the National Herald scam, one of the most notable legal cases in Indian history, in which the mother-son duo are directly accused. Chandra Bhanu Gupta, the three-time UP CM and a senior Congress leader in the 1960s and the 1970s, in his memoir, revealed how National Herald had transformed itself into the ‘Nehru-Indira’ mouthpiece in the years following India’s independence.
The revelation, although made in his memoir decades ago, assumes great significance, especially after the ED had temporarily sealed the National Herald office in New Delhi last month. It had conducted raids at as many as 12 locations linked to Congress mouthpiece National Herald in connection with a money laundering case.
Herald House is the registered office address of Associate Journals Limited (AJL), the National Herald newspaper’s publisher, which is under probe over its acquisition by Young Indian, a firm linked to the Gandhi family.
The agency also questioned both the mother-son duo in connection with a money laundering case. While Rahul Gandhi was questioned by ED on June 13 for over 6 hours and his statement was recorded under Section 50 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi finally appeared before the agency on July 21.
However, this is not the first time that concerns have been raised regarding the funding of the National Herald, a newspaper created in 1938 by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
Three-time UP CM and Congress leader Chandra Bhanu Gupta in his memoir says if inquired about the funding of the National Herald, a big expose will unfold
Chandra Bhanu Gupta, one of Nehru’s party colleagues and a three-time UP CM from the 1960s had once alleged that the paper, for which he and others collected money, became a mouthpiece of the PM and, later, his daughter Indira Gandhi.
Gupta, wrote in his memoir Safar Kahin Ruka Nahin, Jhuka Nahin (Journey did not stop anywhere, did not bend), “I am surprised that National Herald is now considered as a property of the Nehru family. If there is some investigation by an inquiry commission into how funds were collected for National Herald, there will be a big expose. From the very beginning, the policy of the National Herald was to promote Nehru and his daughter. For it, freedom of the press meant attacking whoever criticised the wrong policies of the Nehru family.”
The book was published last year by Naman Prakashan in Lucknow, four decades after Gupta’s death.
Gupta recounted in the book how funds were collected for National Herald during its early years and thereafter when needed.
“We all- Acharya Narendra Dev, Shriprakash, Shiv Prasad Gupt, Purushottam Das Tandon and myself- sold shares. A hundred shares were bought in the name of Nehru so that he could be named its director. Some money was taken from Congress and a part came from money bags gifted to Nehru and other leaders. When I started collecting money for that, it was said that I wanted to take control of the paper. Still, I helped the newspaper during a crisis,” wrote the deceased Congress leader in his memoir.
The former UP CM stated that Rafi Ahmed Kidwai, the state revenue minister in both of GB Pant’s administrations until August 15, 1947, collected money from talukdar families and gave a portion of it to the National Herald. “As a result of that, Nehru never opposed Kidwai’s collection of the fund,” Gupta explained.
In his memoir, the Congress leader stated that on his 65th birthday, July 13, 1966, his well-wishers and friends gave him Rs 36 lakh. This was a year before the UP Assembly elections in 1967. Gupta said that his opponents in the state Congress (HN Bahuguna, Kamlapati Tripathi, and Govind Sahai) complained to the party’s central leadership in Delhi, and Kamaraj got furious with him. Gupta said that the National Herald’s then-managing editor, Uma Shankar Dikshit, a Congress supporter who went on to become a Union minister and the governor of Karnataka and West Bengal, told him that Indira Gandhi wanted a portion of the money to go to the National Herald paper.
But Gupta said he declined, pointing out that he had gotten an Income-Tax Department notification about paying tax on the Rs 36 lakh before Dikshit made this request. He asserted that he had done so.
National Herald was transformed into a Nehru and Indira mouthpiece, Gupta alleged in his memoir
Gupta claimed that since the newspaper had gradually transformed into a Nehru and Indira Gandhi mouthpiece, he “was not ready to fulfil the wishes of Indira Gandhi because she always helped my political opponents silently”. “I told her that I had no funds left,” he added.
Chandra Bhanu Gupta became the third Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in 1960, but he was deposed under the Kamaraj scheme in 1963. K Kamaraj, the then-Chief Minister of Madras State, proposed to Nehru that all senior Congress ministers and chief ministers quit and work for the party. Chandra Bhanu Gupta was re-elected as Chief Minister on March 14, 1967, but resigned on April 2, 1967, after Charan Singh left the Congress party to start his own party. Chandra Bhanu Gupta was elected Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for the third time on February 26, 1969, however, he was deposed a year earlier due to a split in Congress.
The National Herald scam is one of the most notable legal cases in Indian history, as the Gandhis are directly accused. The Mother-Son duo of Congress President Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi, along with their aides – Oscar Fernandez, Motilal Vohra and Sam Pithroda are alleged to have been involved in massive ‘cheating and breach of trust’ in the acquisition of Associated Journals Ltd (AJL) by Young Indian Pvt Ltd (YIL). Assets worth crores of rupees had been allegedly transferred for purposes other than originally intended for a paltry sum. Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi got unconditional bail in December 2015.
