PTC TV MD arrested on a harassment complaint days after his channel debunked Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann’s ‘Rs 6 lakh bridge’ claims

Punjabi News and Entertainment channel PTC’s Managing Director Rabinder Narayan has been arrested by Punjab Police on Wednesday. Narayan was taken into custody over allegations of exploiting innocent girls after duping them for a beauty contest telecast on the channel.

The action from the Punjab Police reportedly came when a contestant from PTC’s Miss Punjab beauty pageant lodged a complaint against the channel. The complainant revealed that she was forcefully enclosed inside a room and harassed by one of the staff members at PTC during the Miss Punjab show. The contestant alleged that human trafficking was taking place in the garb of the beauty contest aired on the channel.

On Wednesday, PTC MD Rabinder Narayan was arrested from his Gurugram residence while an FIR against him was registered in Mohali. Reportedly, the Punjab Police is looking for another suspect in the case while officials have launched a deeper probe to identify the role of any bigger racket involved.

On the other hand, the PTC MD has alleged that the inquiry is an attack on the press. Narayan accused the Mann government of muzzling the voice of the press and has called it a politically motivated move. PTC channel spokesperson told reporters that the SIT formed to probe this case has already recorded the statement of Rabinder Singh Narayan.

PTC’s report on Bhagwant Mann’s bridge

On 31st March 2022, a video of newly sworn-in Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann made rounds on social media. In an interview alongside Arvind Kejriwal, Mann made hilarious claims about building a bridge in Punjab for just Rs 6 lakhs against a quotation of Rs 1.80 crores, during his tenure as MP. Local news channel PTC News decided to report the story by sending a reporter on-site to cover the bridge. PTC aired a satirical story exposing Mann’s claims where it was found that a concrete paver slab instead of a bridge was laid over the waterway in the Dirba village of Sangrur district.

As per a report published by PTC News, locals were seen outraging over the claims of Mann for the so-called bridge. pIn the televised report, people were seen talking to the media accusing Mann of lying and making sensational claims to extract political brownie points. They were also angry with the local AAP MLA Harpal Cheema, who is currently the finance minister in Bhagwant Mann’s cabinet.

The arrest of PTC MD Rabinder Narayan has come days after the channel exposed Bhagwant Mann’s wonderous claims over the bridge. It is to be noted that the PTC Television Network is owned by Sukhbir Singh Badal, president of the Shiromani Akali Dal.

‘India is deciding what is best for our national interest’: EAM Dr S Jaishankar speaks on Ukraine issue in LokSabha

On April 6, while replying to questions on India’s stand on Ukraine, External Minister Dr S Jaishankar said that India, first and foremost, is strongly against the conflict. “We believe that no solution can be arrived at by shedding blood & at the cost of innocent lives. In this day and age, dialogue and diplomacy are the right answers to any disputes.”

EAM Jaishankar was replying to the debate in Lok Sabha on Ukraine’s situation after Congress MP Manish Tiwari and RSP member NK Premachandran issued a notice under rule 193.

He further added that the conflict in Ukraine has significant consequences on the global economy, including that of India. “Like all countries, we too are assessing the implications and deciding what is best for our national interest.”

Speaking about the debate on Ukraine on Tuesday in the House, he said, “We strive to ensure that foreign policy is a subject of maximum consensus in the country. Certainly, that should be the case with a subject as important as Ukraine, and I was glad to see yesterday that was the case. I was also very pleased that four ministers spoke on this matter because these ministers went to the neighbouring countries, they participated in the evacuation operations, and they brought a ground perspective which was very important for the House to listen.”

Emphasising the importance of a nation’s approach to be guided by the national beliefs and values, he said, “Honorable members would all agree that India’s approach should be guided by our national beliefs and values, by our national interest, and by our national strategy. Let me dwell on each of these aspects before addressing some of the specific issues that were brought up by honourable members yesterday. What is India advocating in Ukraine? We are, first and foremost, strongly against conflict. We believe that no solution can be arrived at by shedding blood and at the cost of innocent lives.”

He said India encouraged dialogue between Russia and Ukraine. “If India has chosen a side, it is the side of peace, and it is for an immediate end to violence. This is our principled stand and has consistently guided our position in international forums and debates, including in the UN,” the External Minister said.

Speaking on the civilian deaths in Bucha, Ukraine, he said India had expressed deep concerns about the reports. “We strongly condemn the killings that have taken place there. This is an extremely serious matter, and we support the call for an independent investigation,” he added.

He also pointed out that the political colour given to India’s stand on the Ukraine situation was unfortunate.

Tamil Nadu: BJP leader attacked by alleged goons of DMK ally in Cuddalore, victim’s shop also vandalised

On April 2, BJP’s OBC Morcha deputy leader Babu Rasappan was brutally attacked in the Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu. As alleged by the victim, the attack was carried out by goons belonging to the VCK party, an ally of the DMK, on Saturday night.

Identified as Babu Rasappan, the victim was unloading some hay from his two-wheeler at his shop at the Vadalur Panruti Road in Cuddalore. When he heard skirmishes in a roadside shop when went to check but was brutally thrashed by 3-4 goons in return. Rasappan, who is undergoing treatment in a local hospital, has suffered serious wounds while one of his hands is almost amputated. According to the reports, the victim has accused workers of the radical Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) party of the attack on him.

Reportedly, the goons also vandalized the shop that belonged to the victim during an attack on him. Babu Rasappan who lies helpless on his hospital bed has recorded a statement wherein he said, “I went there but the three youths who were identifying themselves as the workers of the VCK party had started yelling at me. They said that they were looking for me as I am working for BJP. They attacked me till I got fainted.” Rasappan runs a modest family and has a son who is seven-months old.

Following the attack, Tamil Nadu BJP extended assistance to the victim’s family in his treatment. President of the Youth Development and Sports Unit, TN BJP, Amar Prasad Reddy has requested justice for Rasappan in a tweet directed to Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin.

Local BJP Units and party workers have started open crowdfunding to support the victim’s family for his treatment.

The state of Tamil Nadu in which attacks and life threats to BJP workers are rampant saw a similar attack in 2020 where Indu Makkal Katchi founder Arjun Sampath was attacked by DMK and VCK cadres while he was on his way to pay tributes to Babasaheb Ambedkar. The extreme radical political outfit VCK was founded by Thol Thirumavalavan and remains a radical caste-based party with strong advocacy for Tamil Nationalism. It was formally known as the Dalit Panthers of India.

Gujarat: Suspended Congress leader organises ‘Havan’ to purify the party, accuses Bharatsinh Solanki of adultery

On 5th April 2022, a Havan was organized in Ahmedabad by Vandana Patel who was recently suspended from the Congress party. The woman leader hosted this Havan to purify the Congress party by destroying the evil ideas and forces who while holding the higher posts in the organization had been working to weaken the party and take the public support away from the Congress party. The Havan was held on the fourth day of the ongoing Chaitra Navratri.

According to a report by GSTV, Vandana Patel said that some Congress leaders are adulterers. She said, “If I reveal a few things, it will be a stir. Some leaders have tarnished the image of Congress. After the party worker’s hard work, some leaders put up a losing candidate. A false audio clip of me was made.”

Making shocking allegations against Bharatsinh Solanki, she said, “I was suspended from the party because I supported Reshma Solanki. I did not resign. I have launched a front against Bharatsinh Solanki. He has consistently worked to damage the party. If someone should be suspended from the party, then it is Bharatsinh Solanki. He commits adultery with a girl who is of the age of his great-granddaughter.”

She added, “All the leaders of the party know everything. Jagdish Bhai (State Congress head Jagdish Thakur) also knows everything but is suppressed. I will raise this issue in front of Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi.”

Bharatsinh Solanki is son of Congress leader and former Gujarat Chief Minister Madhavsinh Solanki. He was the proponent of the KHAM (Kshatriya, Harijan, Adivasi, Muslims) votebank theory for Congress.

It is notable that Vandana Patel was suspended from the Gujarat State unit of the Congress party on 30th March 2022. The decision was taken after an audio clip went viral in which two leaders of Congress – Vandana Patel and Atul Patel – were heard talking to each other about the damage caused to the party due to the allegedly bad character of some of the party leaders in Gujarat. Atul Patel was also suspended with her. Now, after her suspension, Vandana Patel organized the Havan to purify the party and save it from the evil forces.

IMF paper hails Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, says Aadhar-based distribution saved people from sliding into extreme poverty

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Wednesday lauded India’s efforts for food distribution during the pandemic and said that the country averted the rise in extreme poverty during the period by assuring food security through Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY). The IMF further noted that extreme poverty in India is less than 1 percent and the same was maintained in the year 2020.

The IMF April 5 published a research paper presenting the estimates of poverty and consumption in India during the COVID-19 spread. According to the IMF paper titled ‘Pandemic, Poverty, and Inequality: Evidence from India’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s food security scheme, the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana was critical in preventing an increase in extreme poverty levels in the country.

“The expansion of India’s food subsidy program rather than increasing cash transfers enabled India to provide free food as per the average monthly requirement to all those who were in need. This helped maintain extreme poverty at the low 0.8% level. Without any food subsidies, extreme poverty in the pandemic year would have increased by 1.05% (from 1.43 to 2.48 %)”, the paper read.

The report further mentioned that the food transfers were instrumental in ensuring that extreme poverty remained at that low level in the pandemic year 2020. The IMF also noted that the consumption growth was higher in the years leading up to the pandemic than before it. Also, post-food subsidy inequality at 0.294 is now very close to its lowest level of 0.284 observed in 1993/94, it said.

Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) was announced by the government in March 2020 amid the COVID-19 spread to supply free food grains to migrants and the poor. The government had announced the distribution of 5 kg foodgrains per person per month, over and above the regular monthly NFSA foodgrains. It had also announced an additional supply of free-of-cost foodgrains to about 80 crore National Food Security Act (NFSA) beneficiaries.

The initiative was due to expire by the end of June 2020 but the government extended the PMGKAY up to November 2020. Recently, PM Modi on March 25 further announced the extension of the scheme till September 2022. PM Modi said more than 80 crore people in the country will benefit from the decision.

Meanwhile, the IMF noted that India’s efforts demonstrated the social safety net through the expansion of the food subsidy program. It claimed that the program absorbed a major part of the pandemic shock to the Indian economy by providing insurance to the poor and prevented an increase in the prevalence of extreme poverty in India.

Israeli PM Naftali Bennett says security forces foiled more than 15 terrorist attacks ahead of Ramzan

In the run-up to the recent terrorist attacks that have spiked over Israel after the commencement of Ramzan, Israel’s security forces have been set on high alert during the Islamic holy month. In a recent statement, Israeli PM Naftali Bennett claimed that the security forces have foiled more than 15 terrorist attacks in the Jewish state recently.

On Tuesday, PM Bennet said that the recent string of attacks should serve as a wake-up call during a visit to an army outpost on the West bank. “The last two weeks, in which we have been dealing with severe terrorist attacks, are a wake-up call for all of us. The series of attacks must spur officials to take action after years of neglect, and fix what needs to be fixed with all our might,” Bennett said while talking to the media.

From the coming Sunday, Israel is set to host a high-level security meeting to discuss rising tensions due to the activities of Palestinian terrorists on the West Bank and increased fears of violence during Ramzan. Security officials have expressed concerns over a greater escalation in violence during the holy month of Ramzan. Last week, PM Bennett conducted a meeting with the internal security service Shin Bet to assess the situation after a spike in armed attacks and gunfire incidents in the cities along with the West Bank.

The Prime minister said that security officials are currently operating in a very aggressive manner. “So far, the IDF, the Shin Bet, and the Israel Police have foiled more than 15 serious attacks that were planned by terrorist elements in the West Bank and the rest of Israel.” Amidst Palestinian and Arab-Israeli threats, Bennett reported that more than 200 suspects have been arrested, dozens of raids have been carried out, and more than 400 individuals with connections to Islamic State or other “extreme jihadist organizations” have been identified.

Last week, the Isreal Defence Forces (IDF) terminated 3 suspected terrorists during a shootout in the West Bank city of Jenin. According to reports, the team of Palestinian terrorists were was planning attacks in Israel in the near future. During the Jewish Festival of Shabbat, the internal security service Shin Bet, the police, the IDF and anti-terror units stopped an imminent attack rampaging the country.

Israeli Defence Minister Benny Gantz while talking to Palestinians residing in the West Bank had warned, “We are in a difficult period of terror attacks against Israeli citizens, a situation that we cannot accept. We are considering the measures we can take in honour of Ramzan in order to allow you to celebrate the holiday in the best way possible, while we at the same time maintain security.”

Terrorist attacks in Beersheba, Hadera, and Bnei Brak cities in recent weeks, killed more than 11 civilians accounting for the deadliest string of such attacks in Israel in many years. The Islamic State took responsibility for attacks in Beersheba and Hadera. Reports of night riots in the city of Jerusalem have begun since Ramzan with more than dozens injured and arrested during clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces.

On March 30, New Delhi issued a statement in solidarity with Israel. The official Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs Arindam Bagchi tweeted, “We strongly condemn the terrorist attacks in Israel. Our condolences to the families of the victims.” Naftali Bennett was supposed to be on a visit to India between April 1 and 4, which was later postponed following his undergoing treatment for Covid-19.

ED files FIR against activist Medha Patkar over money laundering charges during Narmada Bachao Andolan, had received suspicious donations

On April 5, Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed First Investigation Report (FIR) against activist Medha Patkar over money laundering charges during ‘Narmada Bachao Andolan’. Patkar played a significant role in delaying the much-needed Sardar Sarovar Dam. The project was delayed for decades and was finally inaugurated in 2017.

Apart from ED, the Department of Revenue Intelligence and the Income Tax Department also have initiated proceedings against Patkar over the suspicious transactions. She is is being probed for unaccounted money donated to her NGO, and the complainant also has accused her of organised crime.

According to a report in The Pioneer, several complaint were lodged with ED, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, and Income Tax Department against Narmada Navnirman Abhiyan (NNA), an NGO linked to Medha Patkar. It was revealed that the NGO, within a year of its formation in 2004, had received a donation of around Rs 1.2 crores but managed to evade law enforcement agencies for over 17 years.

Source: The Pioneer

The report raised several suspicions about the donations. As per the documents accessed by the Pioneer, the NGO received the funds in a single day on June 18, 2005, from 20 different sources. Interestingly, the amount of all 20 donations were same, which was Rs 5,96,294. One of the donators, Pallavi Prabhaar Bhalekar, was a minor when the funds were transferred. All the funds totalling Rs 1,19,25,880 were received in Bank of India account number 001010100064503.

Apart from the Rs 1.20 crore donation, the NGO also received Rs 62 lakhs from Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) from January 2020 to March 2021. A total of six transactions of different amounts were made during that period. The company name raised eyebrows as it is a Central Government undertaking under the Defence Ministry. The company manufactures warships and submarines for the Indian Navy apart from manufacturing offshore platforms and associated support vessels for offshore oil drilling, tankers, cargo bulk carriers, passenger ships and ferries.

Sanjeev Kumar Jha, who filed the complaint against Patkar, said, “These transactions amounting to crores of rupees clearly indicate that Patkar, who dons a humble and frugal persona, is flushed with money coming in from various sources that have so far escaped the Government’s attention. Patkar and her NGOs have a history of opposing every project/policy of national importance, be it the Sardar Sarovar project, nuclear projects, coal mine projects and recently, the CAA and the farm laws enacted by the Central Government. Such repeated funding from Mazagaon Dock to an organization with such malafide motives is a matter of great concern.”

He further added, “These transaction details raise serious questions as to how 20 different people made identical transactions on a single day amounting to over Rs 1 crore. Generally, donations are made in round figures but what prompted these donors to deposit money in such odd figures is a matter of investigation. It also points toward organized syndicate funding such as self-styled NGOs that have remained unnoticed so far. The source of funding and the mode of transaction is clearly a subject of detailed investigation as also the purpose behind such huge donations.”

Notably, Jha is the same person on whose complaint Patkar’s passport was confiscated by the Regional Passport Officer on the grounds of concealing important facts.

How Sardar Sarovar Dam changed lives in Gujarat

The foundation of the project was laid down in 1961 by then-Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru. It took over 55 years for the waters of Narmada to reach the dry areas of Gujarat. In 2012, then-Chief Minister of Gujarat and now Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi had launched a scheme named ‘SAUNI’ (Saurashtra Narmada Avataran Irrigation) Yojana to provide excess Narmada water to 115 dams across Gujarat.

The dam now provides irrigation and drinking water to dry areas in the state.

Sri Lankan President Rajapaksa revokes State of Emergency, gives no indication to step down amid economic crisis

On Tuesday, Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa revoked the state of Emergency with immediate effect on his island nation. With this, the President also withdrew the Emergency rule ordinance which he had declared on April 1 giving security forces sweeping powers to curb any disturbance in the country. Sri Lanka at present is facing a massive economic crisis.

“I, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, President of the Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, hereby revoke the gazette with effect from midnight on 05 April 2022,” a gazette issued late Tuesday night said, referring to the previous order. This is a day after Rajapaksa’s grip on power weakened as 41 lawmakers of the ruling coalition decided to quit the Parliament.

According to the reports, the Rajapaksa government who had won 150 seats in the 2020 general elections now has 109 seats against the 113 required to maintain the majority. Rajapaksa yesterday also asserted that he won’t resign from his position but agreed to hand over the government to whoever proved the majority of 113 seats in Parliament.

Earlier on April 5, the newly appointed Finance Minister Ali Sabry had tendered his resignation expressing no intentions to take up another post. “After much reflection and deliberation and taking into consideration the current situation, I am now of the view, for your Excellency to make suitable interim arrangements to navigate this unprecedented crisis, fresh and proactive, and unconventional steps need to be taken, including the appointment of a new Finance Minister”, he had said.

Also, the governor of Sri Lanka’s central bank, Ajith Nivard Cabraal on April 4 had resigned from his post amid the worst economic crisis in decades. Cabraal’s resignation came seven months after he presided over the role to steer the country’s central bank and manage the economy pummelled by the ravages of the coronavirus-induced downturn and soaring debt crisis.

On April 1, President Rajapaksa had declared an Emergency amid massive protests staged over the worst economic crisis in the country. Thousands of citizens during the protest gathered outside the President’s private residence and demanded his resignation.

Sri Lanka is facing the worst economic crisis in its history, with inflation reaching a record high of 17.5% in February 2022. The residents of the island nation are struggling with an acute shortage of food, and cooking gas. Power cuts are frequent and people are seen standing in long queues in the National Capital for buying diesel fuel. The situation is in Sri Lanka so grim that the central bank is forced to buy oil from Iran by bartering tea leaves, as the country does not have any foreign exchange for imports.

The government, headed by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, has been seeking credit lines from countries such as India, China and even Bangladesh for purchasing milk powder and diesel. India had extended a $1.5 billion credit line for the purchase of 40,000 tonnes of diesel. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka had sought an additional $1 billion credit line for importing essential items.

Earlier, the 26-member Sri Lankan cabinet had submitted letters of resignation. Now, with the government losing its majority in Parliament, protesters across Sri Lanka are demanding the resignations of President Rajapaksa and his brother PM Mahinda, raising slogans of ‘Go Home Gota’. However, the Prime Minister and the President have given no indication that they might step down even as calls for them to go grow louder on the streets.

China warns of ‘Ukraine-like crisis’ after the US, Australia and the UK announce AUKUS hypersonic weapons deal

Zhang Jun, China’s envoy to the United Nations, spoke on Tuesday against the AUKUS partnership on developing hypersonic weapons. Speaking on a proposed deal on hypersonic weapons between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, Jun warned of “things which may lead other parts of the world into crisis”, adding that AUKUS countries should avoid creating another “Ukraine-like crisis”.

Jun castigated the recent deal and urged the AUKUS partner countries to refrain from developing hypersonic weapons. He said countries who partner to develop hypersonic weapons could pave the way for another ‘Ukraine-like crisis’. The Chinese envoy also took a swipe at the western nations for entering into a deal that they were against.

“Anyone who does not want to see the Ukrainian crisis should refrain from doing things that may lead the other parts of the world into a crisis like this,” Zhang said regarding the AUKUS hypersonic deal.

“As the Chinese saying goes, if you do not like it, do not impose it against the others,” he said in a cutting remark against the countries. The comments came on the heels of the announcement made on Tuesday regarding the trilateral cooperation on the development of new hypersonic and electronic warfare weaponry between the AUKUS countries.

AUKUS to develop hypersonic weapons

In a joint statement issued on Tuesday, the AUKUS partners said they will work together to accelerate the development of advanced hypersonic and counter-hypersonic capabilities. They also affirmed their commitment to cooperating on developing enhanced techniques to operate in an electronic warfare environment.

“We reaffirmed our commitment to AUKUS and to a free and open Indo-Pacific. In light of Russia’s unprovoked, unjustified, and unlawful invasion of Ukraine, we reiterated our unwavering commitment to an international system that respects human rights, the rule of law, and the peaceful resolution of disputes free from coercion,” the statement added.

It further added that these initiatives will add to the grouping’s existing efforts to deepen cooperation on cyber capabilities, artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, and additional undersea capabilities.

AUKUS is a trilateral security alliance between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, announced last September, seemingly to counter China in the Indo-Pacific region.

The hypersonic missiles travel at the speed of Mach 5 and are known for remarkable manoeuvrability. They are 5 times faster than the speed of sound and have the unique capability of switching paths during flight.
