Lakhimpur Kheri violence: Congress-friendly media shares cropped video, misleading news about ‘who was in the Fortuner’

As the investigation, as well as the propaganda around Lakhimpur Kheri violence intensifies, a new video of police interrogating an associate of former Congress MP’s nephew has emerged on social media.

In the viral video, a police officer is seen asking the injured man his name, address and other details. The man reveals that he is a resident of Charbagh Lucknow and works with Ankit Das, nephew of Congress leader and former MP Akhilesh Das.

The officer then asked who and how did he travel with on the day of the violence. To this, the man revealed that he was in a black Fortuner (SUV) with Ankit Das, three others and a driver.

The police then asked if Ankit Das too was on the spot and if the car belonged to him. The man replied in positive. The officer then enquired about another car that was ahead in the convoy.

“Aage kiski gaadi thi? (Whose car was ahead?)” asked the officer.

“Vo mujhe nahi pata (That I don’t know),” replied the man. “Vo bhi to saath me hogi? (It too must be with you)” said the police officer asking the man to narrate the scene.

“Aage Thar sabke upar chadate hui jaa rahi thi aur peeche Fortuner thi (The Thar went ramming into poeple and there was a Fortuner behind),” informed the man. Thar was the car that was attacked by ‘farmer’ mob with stones and sticks, thereby breaking the windshield. The driver then lost balance and drove over the crowd. Subsequently, it is believed that the driver of the car was also thrashed by ‘farmer’ mob and killed.

The police further probed about the Thar to which the man said that while he does not know who was in the car, it did belong to ‘bhaiya’ and that the men were also with him. It is not yet clear who ‘bhaiya’ the man was referring to.

Reports suggest that the police are in search of Ankit Das.

Left ecosystem shares misleading information

Meanwhile, in a bid to further their propaganda, the left ecosystem has been promoting misleading information on social media by sharing a cropped video of this interrogation.

The Wire ‘Journalist’ Rohini Singh retweeted the cropped video shared by a farmers group on her Twitter timeline.

Rohini Singh retweets misleading and cropped video. Image Source: Twitter

In the video shared by Rohini, the man only speaks about Thar ‘running over’ the crowd and mowing people. The portion where he mentions he was in the Fortuner with nephew of a Congress leader is cropped out.

While, NDTV in its headline pertaining to the video insinuated that the man suggested the presence of Union Minister’s son in the violence-affected area.

NDTV in its report assumed that the man is referring to UP Minister’s son Ashish Mishra as ‘bhaiya.’

“The “Bhaiya” is seen (as) a reference to Ashish Mishra, Union Minister Ajay Mishra’s son,” reads the report.

This despite the man referred to Ankit Das as ‘bhaiya’ in the first half of the viral video. As we said, it is not yet clear which ‘bhaiya’ was being referred to in Thar. But everyone just assumed the ‘bhaiya’ is Ashish Mishra.

Who is Ankit Das?

Ankit Das is said to be the nephew of former Congress MP Akhilesh Das who was the Minister of Steel from January 2006 till May 2008 in the Manmohan Singh UPA-I government.

He was also the Mayor of Lucknow from May 1993 to November 1996.

Opposition continues to peddle lies

In a classic case of political opportunism, the opposition and the left ecosystem insisted that a deceased farmer was shot at despite the post-mortem report denying the same. The farmer unions as well as the family of the alleged farmer demanded a second autopsy to be conducted in the presence of union representatives.

Attacking the central government over the Lakhimpur Kheri violence, the Gandhi scion said it is a systematic attack against the farmers. “Farmers are being mowed down by a jeep, they’re being murdered, the name of a union minister & his son is coming up in this incident (Lakhimpur Kheri). Yesterday, PM visited Lucknow but he didn’t visit Lakhimpur Kheri. It’s a systematic attack on farmers,” Gandhi said while addressing a press conference.

Lakhimpur Kheri violence

On October 3, a ‘farmer’ mob attacked a BJP convoy with stones and sticks. The windshield of one of the cars broke and the driver seemingly lost control, thereby running over the crowd. Two protestors are believed to have lost their lives. Subsequently, the mob took to violence and beat up the men from the convoy and killed BJP workers. As of now, it is reported about 8 people have lost their lives in the incident.

OpIndia exclusive: Journalist Raman Kashyap’s father says they got news of his son’s death 12 hours after Lakhimpur Kheri violence

Every day since Sunday, October 3, when protesting farmers reportedly attacked BJP workers in Lakhimpur Kheri, resulting in an ensuing clash between the two sides, claims and counterclaims are being made about the incident.

While one side says protesting farmers instigated the violent skirmishes by attacking the BJP convoy, the other side claims farmers were run down deliberately by a car. Amidst these recriminations, the grim reality is that 8 people lost their lives in the violent clashes.

One of the casualties of this skirmish was a young journalist Raman Kashyap who was neither from the BJP nor a part of the protesting farmers. Yet he lost his life just because he was in Lakhimpur Kheri, conscientiously carrying out his duty of journalist and covering the farmers’ protest. Like the rest of us, he was unaware of what fate had in store for him. Neither did his family have the slightest of inkling that their son, who was out on work, would never return.

Raman Kashyap’s father along with the deceased journalist’s daughter and son

Raman is survived by his wife, a 12-year-old daughter, a two-and-a-half-year-old son, his father and two younger brothers—Pawan Kashyap and Rajat Kashyap.

Opindia talks to Raman Kashyap’s father Ram Dulare Kashyap

OpIndia got in touch with the bereaved father to talk about the unfortunate tragedy that befell the family. Ram Dulare Kashyap, Raman’s father, said his eldest son left the house at 12 PM on the fateful day of October 3 to cover a program of State Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya and protests carried out by ‘farmers’ against him.

However, at 4 in the evening, he got a call from one of his younger sons who told him that Raman’s mobile phone was switched off. Later, they came to know about the violence that erupted in Lakhimpur Kheri in which 4 farmers had lost their lives. Raman’s family grew tensed. They still had no idea about their son’s whereabouts. The violence took place somewhere between 3 to 3:30 PM in the afternoon but they came to know about his son’s death at 3 in the morning, 12 hours later, he informed.

Ram Kashyap says his son’s body was sent to Lakhimpur Kheri for postmortem at around 6:30 AM on Monday. He could not receive treatment in Tikonia or in Ninghasan. Raman’s father laments that if a modicum of effort had been made, his son would have been alive today.

“Raman was directly taken to the morgue in Lakhimpur Kheri. There were hospitals on their way to the morgue, but no effort was undertaken to get him any medical attention. We saw the dead body. There were no visible marks of serious injury on it. There was a bruise, minor grazings on hands and legs, and specs of coal tar on his body. So many journalists had gone from here together, no one told us anything nor asked us whether our son returned or not.

At 3 o’clock in the morning, Tikoniya Kotwal called my son’s friend and said that a body has not been identified, and asked him to go and identify it,” Ram Kashyap said.

Raman Kashyap(L) and the incident of violence in Lakhimpur Kheri(R)

Kashyap got emotional while narrating the ordeal of visiting the morgue to identify his son’s body. “These people told us about the incident that took place at 3 in the afternoon at 3 am in the morning. 12 hours after it happened. When we reached the mortuary, we saw an unclaimed corpse lying there. Postmortems of three bodies were done. My son was lying skewed. I looked at the clothes and when I turned him around, I saw it was my son’s body. (The father said sobbing) Had he been treated somewhere first, he might have survived,” Kashyap said.

When asked about what kind of support he had received from the administration so far, Ram Dulare said SDM has assured him that his family will receive the same kind of help that would be extended to the bereaved families of the deceased farmers.

After the incident, CM Yogi Adityanath had announced compensation of Rs 45 lakh to the families of the deceased, along with a guaranteed government job to at least one member of the family. SDM Ninghasan further assured Ram Kashyap that he will extend as much help as possible.

Want administration to arrest the culprit and initiate stringent action against them: Ram Dulare

After the death of his son, Ram Dulare has asked the administration to nab the culprits and take stringent against them. He also asked the government to legislate a law that would ensure the security of journalists. Ram says he does not want anyone to go through what his son had endured.

Journalist Raman Kashyap

Ram Dulare also told us that he has received his son’s mobile phone, which has all the videos shot by him right before the scuffle. The videos show, Dulare claims, protesting farmers waving black flags as vehicles arrived. Ram has been told that his son was hit by a Fortuner vehicle while the farmer protesters were hit by a Thar.

Ram Dulare also clarifies that he has not yet seen any video showing vehicles being attacked, so he does not know about it.

It is also worth mentioning that BJP leader Sumit Jaiswal, who saved his life by jumping off from the Thar, says that when they were on their way, a crowd of hundreds surrounded them and attacked them with sharp weapons. The driver of the vehicle was hurt in the incident and he lost control of the car. According to him, maybe two or three people were hurt by the car as they were standing right in the front.

Union govt approves 7 Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel Parks (PM MITRA), to generate 7 lakh direct and 14 lakh indirect employment

The Narendra Modi government at the centre has approved the establishment of 7 Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel Parks (PM MITRA) in the country with the objecting of putting the country on the global textiles map. The PM MITRA initiative was announced in the union budget for 2021-22.

According to a statement issued by the govt of India, the PM MITRA scheme is inspired by the 5F vision of PM Narendra Modi. The 5F formula includes Farm to Fibre to Factory to Fashion to Foreign. This integrated vision will help to further the growth of the textile sector in the economy. No other competing nation has a complete textile ecosystem like India, which is strong in all five Fs.

The scheme will offer an opportunity to create an integrated textiles value chain right from spinning, weaving, processing/dyeing and printing to garment manufacturing at one location. Such an integrated textile value chain at a single location will reduce the logistics cost of the industry.

Each PM MITRA site will generate 1 lakh direct and 2 lakh indirect employment. This means the entire scheme will generate 7 lakh direct employment and 14 lakh indirect employment.

The scheme will involve a total outlay of Rs. 4,445 crore in a period of 5 years. The 7 Mega Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel Parks will ne se up at Greenfield / Brownfield sites located in different willing states. States with a contiguous and encumbrance-free land parcel of 1,000+ acres along with other textiles related facilities and ecosystem have been welcomed to submit proposals for the parks.

So far states like Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Assam, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana have expressed interest in setting up PM MITRA sites. The final sites will be selected by a Challenge Method based on objective criteria.

The centre will provide ₹500 crore towards Development Capital Support (DCS) of to all Greenfield PM MITRA and a maximum of ₹200 Crore to Brownfield PM MITRA sites, while ₹300 Crore of Competitiveness Incentive Support will be provided to each site for early establishment of textiles manufacturing units. The state governments will contribute by making provision of 1,000 Acre land for the development of a world-class industrial estate.

The PM MITRA parks will include core infrastructure like incubation centre and plug and play facility, developed factory sites, roads, power, water and wastewater system, common processing house and CETP and other related facilities e.g. design centre, testing centres etc. Apart from these, they will contain support infrastructure like workers’ hostels and housing, logistics park, warehousing, medical, training & skill development facilities etc. PM MITRA will develop 50% area for pure manufacturing activity, 20% area for utilities, and 10% of area for commercial development.

The parks will be developed by a Special Purpose Vehicle which will be owned by the respective state government and government of India in a Public Private Partnership (PPP) Mode.

Retired Bollywood actress Zaira Wasim shares first photograph on Instagram two years after leaving the industry

Former Hindi film actress Zaira Wasim, who had left the industry in 2019, surprised everyone yesterday by posting a photo of herself on Instagram. The Dangal star had quit social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram in May 2020 after receiving criticism for her insensitive post insinuating that the locust attack last year in Rajasthan is Allah’s wrath.

However, she had resumed using social media, but her posts were limited to texts containing quotes from various sources including Islamic religious books, and her own quotes. But she had refrained from posting any photographs. She broke this trend by posting an image of a woman on a bridge, presumably her, on October 5. Zaira Wasim is covered in a burqa head to toe in the photo and she is facing away from the camera.

‘The warm October sun,’ she commented along with the photo on Instagram. This is the first time she posted her photograph, even with face not visible, on social media after 2 years.

In June 2019, Zaira Wasim had announced that she is quitting the film industry saying that it was taking her away from Islam. She said that she wasn’t truly happy with her line of work despite her fame and success. It was only while trying to adjust to the new lifestyle did she realized that her career had impacted her relationship with religion.

She had said that she did not fit in the industry, and she did not belong there. Zaira Wasim had further said that she had found solace in Allah and Quran.

‘Set up a commission of inquiry to investigate crimes of the Church in India, bring law to ban illegal conversions’: Vishwa Hindu Parishad

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad has released a statement demanding that like France, India needs to set up a commission of inquiry to investigate the misdeeds of the Church. On October 6, the VHP in a statement stated, “There is an urgent need to set up a commission like the Niyogi Commission to expose the misdeeds of Church priests and missionaries engaged in horizontal conversions in India.”

VHP chief Dr Surendra Jain stated that like France, Bharatiyas also need to learn about the unacceptable sins and activities of the clergy. He added that strict laws are needed to liberate Bharat from the curse of illegal conversions being carried out by force, fraud and allurement by the Church.”

The statement further read, “In France alone, over 330,000 children have been the victims of sexual abuse in the hands of the Christian clergy. Research carried out over a period of 2 and half years has released the report and exposed the truth that was denied for years by the Church. Today, the Churches all over the world are entangled in allegations of sexual abuse and sexual scandals. When the crimes are exposed, the Church and the clergy have to apologise. That is the reason Christians in many nations are turning away from religion.”

Dr Surendra Jain further stated that the Church’s past and present in India are full of disgraceful incidents, from the Goa inquisition, murders of Hindu Sadhus (Odisha and Palghar) and many such blood-splattered pages. In India, the Church has only converted people by force, fraud and allurement. Multiple incidents of sexual harassment of nuns, and other victims have also come to the fore.

The statement further highlighted the many incidents of human trafficking and selling of orphaned children by the Church-run orphanages. It added that several state governments have also asserted the Church’s links with Naxalites and the terrorist organisations of the North-East. “It is the misfortune of Bharat that whenever such crimes of the Church come to the fore, the Church glorifies the guilty instead of apologizing,” the statement added.

“The VHP demands that a nationwide inquiry commission like the Niyogi commission should be set up to enquire into the conspiracies of the Church in Bharat and the culprits should be given exemplary punishment. The central government should bring a law banning horizontal conversions by those who see themselves to be outside the cultural commonwealth and fraternity of Bharat.”

In conclusion, the VHP statement added, “Church functionaries should come forward and voluntarily confess their sins, stop illegal conversions and other illegal activities, otherwise VHP will launch a massive movement to expose their conspiracies and stop illegal conversions.”

The Niyogi Committee report is a comprehensive report on the activities of Christian missionaries in India, published in 1956 by the government of Madhya Pradesh.

When ‘Ravan’ Arvind Trivedi blessed me

Like every 90s kid, I have grown up watching B R Chopra’s Mahabharat and Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan. All the actors who played roles in these epic series have been part of my childhood and were also my first brush Hindu as an identity. So much that even now if I were to imagine Lord Ram, an image of Arun Govil, who played the role of Lord Ram in the serial, pops up.

Another such fantastic actor was Arvind Trivedi who played the role of the demon king Ravan in Ramayan. Wearing black robes, golden crown and jewels, he fit the role of an arrogant, powerful king. Amongst other scenes, one that has been etched in my memory very clearly is the part where Ravan had prayed to Lord Shiva and recited the Shiv Tandav Stotra, the powerful Stotra which he himself composed.

The original clip is not available, likely because of copyright issue, but I do hope everyone gets to see them on Doordarshan channel. When I grew up and saw the rerun, I got curious and started to memorise the Shiv Tandav Stotra. It is so tough that even now I can recite first three stanzas without reference and next 3-4 if I’m reading it from somewhere and remaining I just cannot. Maybe some day I will.

When I met ‘Ravan’

My memory fails me and I am mixing up years, but it was either sometime in 2002 or in 2006 when Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was on a fast. I maybe wrong but it was likely 2002, just few months before the state assembly elections or in 2006 while protesting for Narmada dam. I do remember the place, though. It was at GMDC ground in Ahmedabad.

A lot of people had come to show support to then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. I got to know that Arvind Trivedi was also going to be there. I decided to go see how it is there.

I was thrilled to see Arvind Trivedi on stage. Soon, audience requested him to recite the Shiv Tandav Stotra. I was thrilled beyond words. ‘Ravan’ was going to recite the Shiv Tandav Stotra I have been trying to memorise. And he did. The audience clapped in rhythm and the atmosphere was so divine. I still get goosebumps.

When he got off stage, I rushed to him. He was surrounded by fans. Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi looked at us as we stood around Arvind Trivedi. I told him that I loved listening to him and that I am also trying to memorise the Shiv Tandav Stotra, having drawn inspiration from him.

“Really? You must recite with me, then,” he said. “Chal, sharu kar (come, start),” he said. And there, ‘Ravan’ Arvind Trivedi and I recited first stanza of Shiv Tandav Stotra as Narendra Modi looked at us. Arvind Trivedi then put his hand on my hand and blessed me.

Today, when I saw the news of his passing, a part of my childhood died. He acted in close to 300 films in Gujarati and Hindi, both. But he was always Ravan for me, and for many others like me.

May Mahadev bless his soul.

I shall leave this short recital of Shiv Tandav Stotra as my small tribute to him.

Conversion Racket: UP ATS conducts raids at premises of recently arrested Maulana Kaleem Siddiqui in Delhi

The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Tuesday conducted massive raids at the premises of Maulana Kaleem Siddiqui who has been accused of running India’s ‘biggest religious conversion syndicate’.

Two residential and two commercial properties of prime accused Maulana Kaleem Siddiqui and his associates were searched in connection with the probe.

As per a press note issued by the ATS, incriminating evidence from desktops, tablets and documents has been seized from the raids conducted at several locations across the national capital.

Press Note on raids conducted by UP ATS

Siddiqui’s residence as well as his organizations Global Peace Center and World Peace Organization located in Shaheen Bagh area of New Delhi were raided along with the residence of one Abdul Rahman.

The UP ATS in September had arrested the 64-year-old Islamic scholar in connection to religious conversions. Reportedly, the accused propagated religious hatred in WhatsApp groups by sharing radical messages. Additionally, Siddiqui’s Jamia Imam Waliullah trust that funds several madrassas had received huge foreign funding.

Uttar Pradesh ADG (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar had informed, “Investigation shows Maulana Kaleem Siddiqui’s trust received Rs 3 crores in foreign funding including Rs 1.5 crores from Bahrain.”

Siddiqui had been on the radar of security agencies and was finally nabbed last month. As per the police, six teams have been formed to investigate the matter further.

Crores received through hawala

The UP ATS had initiated a massive investigative operation in June this year after the arrest of one Umar Gautam and his aide accused of mass conversions.

The duo ran an organization named Islamic Dawah Centre (IDC), along with their other associates, to mass convert people into Islam through inducements such as marriage, job, money and mental pressure.

They have also been accused of targeting differently-abled children to convert and use them as human bombs. Moreover, the investigation has also revealed the illegal foreign funding received by Gautam and his accomplices.

‘Cowards can only pelt stones and fire bullets from behind’: Murdered Kashmir Pandit’s daughter challenges killers to face her

On October 5, Tuesday, terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar fired bullets and killed a well-known Kashmiri Pandit Makhan Lal Bindroo, who ran a pharmacy in the city’s Iqbal Park area. Bindroo was one of the few Pandits who had not left the valley during the violent exodus of Pandits in the wake of Islamist terrorism.

Today, a video has emerged where Makkhan Lal Bindroo’s young daughter Dr Shraddha Bindroo was seen talking to the media. In a brave message to the unknown terrorists who killed her father, the young woman said that stone-pelting and senseless violence is all that the terrorists are capable of.

“I am an associate professor, my brother is a famous diabetologist, my mother runs our shop. Our father had started from nothing, but this is what he has made us. These people (terrorists) can only kill the body, but not the spirit. They are not capable of having meaningful discussions, or a sane debate. Stone-pelting and firing bullets are all they are capable of,” she told in front of the camera.

“You people have killed a body, but you cannot kill my father’s legacy and his spirit. If you think you have guts, come and sit before us and have a discussion. Here I am, my Kashmiri Pandit Hindu father’s Kashmiri Pandit Hindu daughter. Come and face me,” the brave woman challenged.

On October 5, Islamic terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir killed 3 innocent civilians. Apart from Bindroo, a street vendor named Virendra Paswan was killed brutally. Paswan was a pain puri vendor who hailed from Bhagalpur and stayed in the Alamgari Bazar Zadibal area.

The third victim was Mohd Shafi Lone, a resident of Naidkhai who was murdered by terrorists in the Shahgund area of Bandipore in North Kashmir. Lone was the president of the local taxi stand.

Kashmiri Pandit genocide and exodus

The rise of Islamic terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir was marked by the brutal genocide and exodus of Kashmiri Pandit Hindus. Thousands of Hindus were driven away from their native land by Islamic radicals after a spate of murders, kidnappings, rapes and threats. In multiple attacks throughout the region, Hindu families had been brutally massacred and the rest of them were forced to leave, leaving behind their possessions and houses.

Over the years, the few Pandits who had stayed back are being systematically targeted too. Many local politicians have been killed in recent years. Hindu businessmen like the son of the owner of famous Krishna Dhaba, have been the victims of Islamic terrorism in recent months.

Worried about Aryan Khan’s diet, mother Gauri takes McDonald’s burgers to NCB office for him to relish

No love as genuine as a mother’s, they say. Currently in Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) custody over allegations of consumption of drugs on a luxury cruise ship on Gandhi Jayanti in middle of a raging pandemic, Aryan Khan’s mother, Gauri Khan was worried about her son’s diet. Hence, she got a few burgers packed from McDonald’s and took them to NCB office. Aryan Khan is son of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan.

However, the NCB did not allow her to take them inside owing to security concerns. As per reports, Aryan Khan has told NCB officers that his father is so busy he has to sometimes take appointment to meet him. However, the rave party accused have been relishing quite a few delicacies like puri-bhaji, dal-chawal, sabzi-parathas and even biryani and pulao from nearby restaurants.

Aryan Khan drug case

On Sunday, October 3, Aryan Khan, Arbaaz Merchant and other 7-8 people were detained from a luxury cruise liner where a rave party was going on. As per reports, cocaine and ecstasy pills were found on Khan and others with him.

The Court held that a prima facie case is made out against Khan and other co-accused. “Investigation is of prime importance and presence of the accused is needed for detailed investigation. It is useful for both the prosecution and the accused to prove their innocence,” it said.

Khan has been remanded to NCB custody till the 7th of October. Arbaz Seth Merchant and Munmun Dhamecha have also been sent to NCB custody along with Aryan. He was represented in the Court by Satish Maneshinde, who claimed that no substance was recovered from him.

‘Don’t want fake sympathies from perpetrators of 1984 Sikh genocide’: Posters come up in Lucknow ahead of Rahul Gandhi’s Lakhimpur Kheri visit

Posters have been put up at various places along the route to the Lucknow airport ahead of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s scheduled visit to Lakhimpur Kheri. In these posters, Rahul Gandhi and Congress have been targeted for using the Lakhimpur Kheri flare-up to gain political mileage.

One of the posters read, “Nahin chahiye farzi Sahanubhuti, khun see bhara hai daman tumhara, tum kya doge saath hamara, nahi chahiye saath tumhara” which roughly translates to “We don’t want your fake sympathies. Your hands are covered in blood, what support will you give us, we don’t want your support”.

Another poster made a reference to the 1984 Sikh genocide. Without referring to the Gandhis directly, the poster said those who are responsible for the 1984 pogrom should not rub salt on the wounds of Sikhs now.

Yet another poster slamming the Gandhis said Sikhs of Lakhimpur Kheri do not want sympathies from people who are responsible for the 1984 riots.

There were other posters too that directly referred to Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi as ‘murderers of Sikhs’ and asked them to go back.

Lakhimpur Kheri: UP’s ‘Mini Punjab’ where Khalistani terrorists flourished during Punjab insurgency

It is worth noting that Lakhimpur Kheri is a Sikh dominant region, also known as UP’s ‘Mini Punjab’. During the Khalistan insurgency, the Mini Punjab of Uttar Pradesh used to be a safe haven for Khalistani outfits. They flourished for decades in UP but went into hibernation following the crackdown in the 1990s. Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) was one of the most active outfits in the region during the insurgency.

Apart from Lakhimpur Kheri, the regions that were part of Mini Punjab were Pilibhit and Shahjahanpur of Uttar Pradesh and Uddham Singh Nagar district which is now a part of Uttarakhand.

During the 90s, agencies had arrested 12 individuals linked to BKI. They were lodged in Shahjahanpur district jail. After they were released, some of them stayed back while others shifted to Lakhimpur Kheri and Pilibhit. Some of them migrated to Punjab.

When the partition happened in 1947, several Sikh families who came from Pakistan were settled in Uttar Pradesh. The majority of these families got settled in Lakhimpur Kheri, Pilibhit, Rampur, Sitapur and Bijnor districts. A couple of small villages comprised of Sikh families only. The land originally belonged to a local King, Raja Vikram Shah. When Sikhs came to UP after the partition, he gave up the land and donated it to the Sikhs.

Earlier today, Rahul Gandhi convened a press conference in which he said he is going to visit the Lakhimpur Kheri village, days after the violence erupted in the wake of an attack by ‘protesting’ farmers against BJP workers led to the death of 8 people.

Violence in Lakhimpur Kheri

On October 3, eight people died after BJP workers were attacked by protesting ‘farmers’ at Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh. As per reports, a large group of alleged farmers had gathered in Lakhimpur Kheri to mark their protest against the three Agriculture laws enacted in September last year. Deputy CM was scheduled to visit Lakhimpur Kheri. The protesters went violent and pelted stones at BJP’s convey. One of the cars in the convoy lost balance and ran over the protesters allegedly killing two persons. After this, the farmers attacked the convoy, torching vehicles and killing people.

Several opposition leaders, in an attempt to exploit the situation, hightailed it to the village, to revive their political fortunes ahead of the UP assembly polls. Priyanka Gandhi, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, TMC leaders and many others proceeded to the village to politicise the incident and mount an attack against the Yogi Adityanath government.
