Kerala: Leaked internal document of CPIM warns about radical Islamists grooming young women for terror activities

In a leaked internal note, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) had admitted the threat posed by radical Islamist organisations in Kerala. On Thursday (September 16), the CPIM distributed pamphlets amongst its cadre, warning about attempts by Islamists to lure young, educated women in professional colleges to the path of terrorism.

The internal document titled, ‘Minority Communalism’ noted that extremist forces have ‘infiltrated’ into mainstream Muslim organisations to create communal disharmony in the State. It further cautioned that debates in support of the Taliban were happening in Kerala. The CPIM has urged its supporters and party workers to remain vigilant about these issues.

“Deliberate attempts are being made to lure youth into communalism and extremist ideologies. Conscious efforts are on to make educated young women in professional colleges to think that way…Both the student union and youth organisation (of CPM) should pay special attention to the issue,” the ruling party in Kerala stated. The development comes amidst the backdrop of allegations of ‘love jihad’ and ‘narcotics jihad’ by Catholic Bishop Joseph Kallarangatt.

Leaked internal document of the CPI (M)

Meanwhile, the BJP has accused the Communist Party of India (Marxist) of providing ‘fertile ground’ to terrorists to thrive. “The extremist forces would not have gained a foothold in the state if they have reacted strongly against them. What sincerity do they have to say now that vigil should be stepped up against terrorism, senior BJP leader Kummanam Rajasekharan pointed out.

BJP asks Kerala govt to acknowledge the presence of Love Jihad in the state

BJP state president K Surendran had recently stated that CPM should publicly admit that ‘Love Jihad’ or Grooming Jihad is prevalent in the state of Kerala as the party has now mentioned the same in the note that the party’s state unit has prepared. “CPM should stop its double standards on the issue. There should be a proper investigation on the matter. The influence of terrorists is rising in the state and they are using love jihad to further their goals,” the BJP state president asserted.

Kerala CPM has prepared the note for distribution on September 10 to all its lower committees, which are getting ready to meet ahead of the upcoming state conference of the party scheduled to be held in Kochi in February next year.

Tamil Nadu: BJP functionary hacked to death, Police arrests three

0

On September 16, a BJP functionary, 45-year-old Muthupandi, was hacked to death by three men identified as 27-year-old Sugumar, 22-year-old Palpandi and 60-year-old Selvendran from Viravanpatti. The Police arrested all three accused on Friday. The other three who were allegedly involved in the murder are still at large.

Hailing from Virampatti village in Sivagangai district, Muthupandi was appointed as District Vice President of Fisherman’s team of BJP. As per reports, Muthipandi was brutally attacked at a tea shop. The attackers had gone to his house located on Nelmandi Street but could not find him. They ransacked the house, including the car parked outside his house. They came to know he was spotted at a tea shop near his house.

When Muthupandi tried to escape, they chased him. He was surrounded by the attackers and attacked with sharp weapons. When Muthupandi fell on the road unconscious, the attackers ran away. He was rushed to Sivagangai Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.

A three-member Police team was formed to capture the killers. The Police scrolled through the CCTV footage and found that there were six people involved in the murder who escaped on two motorbikes after committing the crime.

Reports suggest that Muthupandi was accused of the murder of an AIADMK functionary identified as Selvam. The trio, relatives of Selvam, killed Muthupandi allegedly to take revenge. They have confessed to the murder as per the Police. After the arrest, the trio was produced in court and remanded in Police custody. The Police are looking for the other three accused. The Police have recovered two motorbikes and weapons.

Murder of AIADMK’s Selvam

In July 2012, Selvam, an AIADMK functionary from Vairavanpatti, was travelling on a two-wheeler to the Sivaganga district sessions court to appear in a murder case. He was allegedly murdered on the way, and Muthupandi was named as one of the accused in the crime.

Not without our Gandhis: Congress social media wants Rahul as party president, leaders want Priyanka as UP CM candidate

As Congress faces yet again political crisis after Captain Amarinder Singh resigned as Punjab CM, the party workers have again decided the only solution to the mess would be to make Rahul Gandhi as party president. Rahul Gandhi was the party president during the 2019 general elections and he decided to ‘step down’ taking ‘moral responsibility’ of the party’s defeat as well as his own humiliating defeat in the Nehru-Gandhi family bastion, Amethi to BJP’s Smriti Irani. Rahul Gandhi had contested from two seats and managed to win the Wayanad seat.

Upon his resignation, his mother, Sonia Gandhi was again made party president. She was also the party president for nearly twenty years before handing over the business to her son Rahul Gandhi. Now, AICC social media team again wants Rahul Gandhi to come back as party president and save the sinking ship that Congress has been reduced to.

Apparently, Congress social media cell believes Rahul Gandhi, despite his history of goof ups on Twitter, will infuse the party cadre with new energy. Earlier this month, the Indian Youth Congress, NSUI, the students wing of Congress and the Congress SC/ST department had also passed resolutions to make him party president again.

But it is not just Rahul Gandhi the party workers want to be subservient to. If the party wants Rahul Gandhi to take on the national role, senior leaders want Priyanka Gandhi to lead Uttar Pradesh as party’s general secretary.

Senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid on Saturday said that it would be up to Priyanka Gandhi to portray herself as the Chief Minister candidate for Uttar Pradesh elections.

Priyanka Gandhi has never contested any elections. Further, the family members of the Nehru-Gandhi family have always contested the general elections and not legislative assembly elections. It is perhaps below their dignity to contest state assembly elections when they feel they are entitled to becoming the prime minister of the country. In fact, the entitlement is so much that when former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated on 31st October, 1984, her son Rajiv Gandhi was made Prime Minister in her place. Surely, there were other, more experienced Congress MPs who may have been better leaders, but, well, Rajiv Gandhi was the ‘natural heir’.

Considering the circumstances and history, it is unlikely Priyanka Gandhi would put herself out there as face of UP Chief Ministerial candidate, especially when the party’s chances appear bleak, that party leaders, including veterans like Salman Khurshid, cannot think beyond the Nehru-Gandhi-Vadra nexus is amusing, at the very least.

OSD to Rajasthan CM Gehlot ‘resigns’ after his tweet amid Punjab political crisis sparks controversy

Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Lokesh Sharma has ‘offered resignation’ after a tweet by him amid the Punjab political storm sparked controversy. On Saturday, amid reports of former Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh deciding to step down, Sharma took to Twitter to post a couplet in Hindi.

Sharma tweeted that a strong person is made helpless and an ordinary person is made arrogant. When fence itself is destroying the crop, who can save such a crop? Essentially, without mentioning anyone’s names, Sharma said that those who are tasked with protecting things, the top leadership, themselves are destroying things.

This tweet triggered controversy on Twitter, considering there is a political tussle even in Rajasthan Congress with Gehlot camp vs Sachin Pilot camp, the way things stand in Punjab with multiple players playing the power play.

Congress workers demanded Sharma’s resignation after this particular tweet.

Many even speculated that similar fate awaits Rajasthan as well.

However, within hours of the tweet, Sharma has ‘offered to resign’.

As tweeted by news agency ANI, Sharma, in a letter said that his tweet has been given a political colour and being associated with Punjab politics. He said that he has been active on Twitter since 2010 and he has never tweeted anything that goes against the party line. He further said that ever since he became the OSD, he has never tweeted any thing political and has always talked about the government policies. However, since his tweet seems to have hurt the sentiments, he has offered to resign from his post and asked Gehlot to take the final call on it.

Punjab crisis

On Saturday, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh resigned as he said he was being constantly humiliated by the party. Amid the crisis, Congress leaders gathered together to decide on the new Chief Minister of Punjab. Speculations include Navjot Singh Sidhu, Sunil Jhakhar, Ambika Soni and Vijay Inder Singla amongst others. A meeting will be held on Sunday to decide on the new chief minister of Punjab.

Environmental group writes to NGT, demands stay on BMC’s cycle track project over Powai Lake citing damage to ecology

0

An environmental group, Sahyadri Rights Forum, has registered a complaint with the National Green Tribunal over the alleged exploitation of Powai Lake in Mumbai. The forum said that they received a complaint from a student of IIT-Bombay regarding the same following which they acted on the complaint.

In their email to the NGT, the Sahyadri Rights Forum alleged that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was constructing a cycle track on the Powai Lake with complete disregard for the environment. It alleged that the constructions were being carried out in a clandestine manner without due environmental clearances and in violation of judicial orders.

The email said, “The said construction is carried out by reclaiming Powai Lake with mesh wired stones and cutting thousands of trees around it. Such activity would not just engender tree creatures that have habituated there but reclaiming of water in the lake will also engender the marine life and create a total ecological imbalance and amounts to playing with nature.”

The email to NGT

The Sahyadri Rights Forum also demanded that the NGT take immediate cognizance of the matter and put a stay in the project. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board has also written to the BMC over the spraying of chemicals due to concerns regarding the ecology. The BMC has been instructed to stop spraying chemicals such as glyphosate. The directive was issued based on a complaint from an environmentalist associated with the Vanashakti NGO.

D Stalin, the complainant, told TOI, “I am pleased that MPCB has taken corrective measures and directed the municipal body to stop spraying chemicals into Powai lake. Several Indian marsh crocodiles, which are protected species that cohabit in the lake, along with fish and other marine creatures can be severely affected by the use of glyphosate to eradicate water hyacinths.”

He added, “We are awaiting the formal response of BMC on the use of chemicals. We are also opposed to the construction of a cycle track around the lake area. Several trees have already been cut for this track project, and crushed stones have been dumped into the water, which is bad for the environment.”

Another environmentalist based in Powai said, “Was any environment impact assessment report finalized before giving the contract to spray chemicals on water hyacinths in the lake? Any random knee-jerk action to clean the water body can prove detrimental to the environment.”

Pakistan: Nuclear scientist accuses Imran Khan govt of Talibanising education, forcing burqa upon women, TV host wears hijab in protest

0

On Tuesday (September 14), Pakistani nuclear physicist Pervez Hoodbhoy lashed out at the Imran Khan government over the systematic ‘Talibanisation’ of the country’s education system, particularly through the publication of textbooks under the Single National Curriculum (SNC).

Hoodbhoy made the remarks during the programme ‘G for Gharidah’, which was aired on News One on Tuesday. At about 8 minutes into the show, the nuclear physicist said, “I have seen some books, where girls and their mothers were shown fully covered and sitting on the floors. When such girls will see women not ‘covered’ in such a manner elsewhere, she would believe that it is wrongdoing on the part of the woman.”

Pakistani textbook depicts women sitting on the floor in hijab, while men sit on a sofa in western attaire

Pervez Hoodbhoy strongly condemned the nefarious intentions of the federal government of Pakistan. He added, “This is a gross attempt at gender stereotyping, and the objective is to portray that the place of a woman is within the four walls of the house. This is an attempt at Talibanisation of education. They are trying to transform Pakistan into Afghanistan under the Imran Khan government. “

Nuclear physicist reveals about the growing Islamisation, imposition of hijab and restricted participation of female students

At about 22 minutes into the programme, Hoodbhoy shared his experience as a Physics Professor at the Quaid-e-Azam University (QAD). He recounted, “I started teaching at QAD in 1973. You would hardly find a girl wearing a burqa 47 years ago at the varsity. Now, burqa and hijab have become a commonplace affair. You will not find a normal girl anymore. When these girls sit in classrooms, wrapped in Burqa and hijab, their activeness and responsiveness decline drastically”.

“Most of the times, it is even hard to notice whether they are even in classrooms. Earlier, female participation in class discussions was still low but now it is non-existent,” he added. The nuclear physicist did not mince any words while drawing a clear distinction between ‘normal girls’ and the ones clad in burqa and hijab. He also emphasised how a forced conservative dress code not only curtails individual freedom but also the ability of a woman to freely ask questions and resolve her queries.

Female anchor dawns a hijab to protest against the remarks of Pervez Hoodbhoy

Following Pervez Hoodbhoy’s comments on News One, Samaa TV host Kiran Naz decided to create a drama on live TV by quoting him out of context. Naz, who never appeared on the show in a hijab or burqa, began to defend the ‘Islamic cultural practice’. She further claimed that women who ‘choose’ to wear burqa or hijab are not ‘abnormal’ in any manner.

While dismissing the comments of the nuclear physicist, the Samaa TV host put on a hijab during the live show and continued the remainder of the programme.

Australia: Violent protesters take to streets against draconian lockdown restrictions, assault police officers

0

Violence erupted at Melbourne and Sydney in Australia after thousands of anti-lockdown protesters took to the streets to protest against restrictions imposed by the government in the wake of COVID-19.

On the day when the state recorded 535 new cases and 1 death due to COVID-19, around 1,000 protesters defied the stay-in-home orders and gathered in the north-eastern suburbs of Richmond and Hawthorn to mark their opposition to the new set of restrictions enforced to tame the outbreak.

However, protests quickly turned violent as clashes broke out between demonstrators and law enforcement officials. Victoria Police on Saturday arrested 235 people and three officers were admitted to hospital following the violent skirmishes between the police and the anti-lockdown protesters in Melbourne’s inner city.

Videos of the protests show protesters indulging in riotous behaviour, assaulting police officers and throwing objects, including plastic bottles, cones, at the officials deployed to control the demonstrations.

The protesters also ran over barricades mounted by the police to confine the demonstrations to Burnley Street in Richmond and escaped to Bridge Road. Footage from the ground showed protesters clashing with police on several occasions.

Similar anti-lockdown protests were also witnessed in Sydney as police moved to deter demonstrations by arresting protesters for violating stay-in-home orders as New South Wales crossed the 50,000 COVID-19 cases mark since the start of the pandemic. Besides, protests were also witnessed in other cities in NSW.

The NSW police on Saturday arrested 32 people, 20 of whom were in Sydney. They said 265 infringement notices had been sent for a host of violations, including failure to wear a face mask, 232 of which were in metropolitan Sydney.

Additionally, anti-lockdown protesters also took to streets in Brisbane even though the state was not under lockdown. Thousands of protesters were seen on the streets in Brisbane, expressing their solidarity with fellow citizens enduring lockdown in neighbouring states and lambasting the authorities for infringing on their individual rights.

The demonstrations came at a time when Australia is grappling with the coronavirus outbreak, driven by the more transmissible Delta variant, with both Sydney and Melbourne, and the capital Canberra, in strict lockdowns for weeks now. On Saturday, 1,882 new coronavirus cases were reported, most of them in Sydney.

Widespread protests have become a common feature in Australia, where thousands of citizens, chafing under the draconian lockdown restrictions, have participated in anti-lockdown rallies in various cities throughout the country in defiance of the restrictions imposed by the government.

The law enforcement officials have also displayed no restraint in using harsh measures against the protesters, including the use of rubber bullets and tear gas, to disperse crowds that had gathered on roads in a nationwide protest to oppose the imposition of lockdown by the government.
