The Uttar Pradesh town of Aligarh may soon lose its name to Harigarh after the Zila Panchayat of Aligarh on Monday passed a resolution seeking to rename the city, which members claimed, was a long-pending demand. The proposal was unanimously ratified in the first meeting of the panchayat with 50 out of 72 members in attendance.
“For a long time, people had demanded Aligarh be renamed as Harigarh. The Zila Panchayat approved the proposal unopposed. It would now be forwarded to the state government for approval,” said Vijay Singh, Zila panchayat chairman for Aligarh.
Besides, a proposal was also passed to name the airport of Aligarh after BJP leader Kalyan Singh, who was the resident of the ‘Lock City’ and the chief minister of the state during the Ram Janmabhoomi movement when the controversial Babri structure was levelled to the ground in Ayodhya.
In addition to Aligarh, the Zila Panchayat of Mainpuri also passed a resolution seeking to rechristen the town as Mayan Nagar, after sage Mainpuri who founded the present day Mainpuri, members said.
“One of the members moved the proposal to rename Maiunpuri to Mayan Nagar. The proposal was passed on Monday with 23 members supporting the motion and two opposing it,” said Archana Bhadoria, Zila panchayat chairperson of Mainpuri.
It is worth noting that Mainpuri is the stronghold of Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav, who had won five elections from the constituency.
Earlier this month, a similar proposal to rename Firozabad to Chandra Nagar was passed by the Firozabad district panchayat. According to locals, King Chandrasen lived in Firozabad and because it was earlier known as Chandravar Nagar till about 1560 AD, the city should be renamed Chandra Nagar.
“The city was renamed to Firozabad after a representative of emperor Akbar, Firoz Shah, visited the area. The demand to rename Firozabad as Chandra Nagar has been raised time and again” said a local.
Turkey in an attempt to restrict the illegal entries of migrants, especially from Afghanistan after the fall of Kabul is building a 295 km wall on its Iranian border. The defense minister of Turkey informed that the construction of the modular wall is nearly completed, informing that security on the bordering regions has been intensified through the use of technological means.
“We are building a modular wall. A big part of it has been completed. Nearly 150 kilometers of trenches were dug. Additional reinforcements were made to our border outposts and base areas,” informed Defense Minister Hulusi Akar on Sunday.

Talking about the heightened security deployed to stop the influx from Afghanistan, Akar said, “We operate with around a thousand reconnaissance surveillance vehicles, including thermal night vision devices. Thanks to the electro-optical towers and acoustic sensors, it has become very easy to detect the mobility on the borderline.”
“Our border is our honor,” asserted Akar claiming that all the civilians and military personnel are just doing their jobs.
Not just this, the country says it will intensify its work to “reinforce the understanding that the borders are impassable.”
Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday remarked, “Turkey is facing a growing migratory wave of Afghans transiting through Iran.”
“With this wall, we will totally stop the arrivals,” he exclaimed when pressured by the opposition on the issue of the growing influx of illegal immigrants.
Erdogan and his ministers have, however, denied all claims of “scores of irregular migrants entering Turkey through the Iran border.” Not sure why the country is then gung-ho about the wall.
Reports suggest that up to 1,000 Afghans are entering Turkey illegally through the eastern borders every day to escape Afghanistan which has been overtaken by the Taliban regime.
Turkey is currently home to some 4 million refugees, including Syrians and 200,000 to 600,000 Afghans.
Turkey to work with Pakistan to stop the influx
As per a Wion report, Turkey will be working with Pakistan to help stabilize Afghanistan and prevent a new flood of refugees. “We will continue efforts to enable the return of stability in the region, beginning with Afghanistan,” Erdogan said alongside his Pakistan counterpart Arif Alvi.
The President of Turkey has also proposed to meet the Taliban leader for talks.
Turkey offers to take charge of Kabul airport
Controversies around Turkey wanting to take control of the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul are rife.
Turkey has 600 soldiers deployed in Afghanistan and has offered to take charge of security at Kabul’s international airport after the US completes its military withdrawal by the end of this month.
However, another report by Reuters suggests that Turkey’s plans to gain control of the airport are in disarray but is ready to provide support if the Taliban request it.
“… in the event that the Taliban asks for technical support, Turkey can provide security and technical support at the airport,” said the report.
The opposition parties of Turkey have criticized the government’s plans of taking control of the airport, saying such a mission would put Turkish soldiers at risk. They have also called for their immediate withdrawal amid the growing violence and uncertainty.
Mother of the alleged rape victim from Delhi in a conversation has revealed that no permission was sought from her by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi prior to sharing her image on social media. POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act prohibits sharing image of the minor rape victim or her parents which could reveal her identity. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had shared image of the victim’s parents on social media, following which his account was locked out.
In a video that has been shared on social media, the mother of the alleged victim has revealed that she had interacted with Rahul Gandhi the way she interacted with the person interviewing her at that time and that no additional permission to share her details on social media revealing her identity was taken.
When the interviewer asked the mother if she has signed any consent letter for her identity being revealed, she said she has not signed any such letter. “Neither I, nor my husband signed any papers,” she said. She added that she had no idea her picture was being shared and said that her only concern is that her daughter gets justice and the perpetrators get death sentence for the crime.

After Rahul Gandhi violated the law of the land by revealing identity of the rape victim, the NCPCR wrote to Twitter to take down the tweet within 24 hours in case Rahul Gandhi himself does not delete it. Subsequently, Twitter deleted the tweet and Rahul Gandhi’s account was locked out, likely for 12 hours on first offence, over policy violation. However, later after the reports came in that they had ‘permission’ from the victim’s parents to use the picture, Twitter winked and reinstated the tweet but flagged it as ‘unavailable’ in response to legal demand. Those who access Rahul Gandhi’s account from outside of India can see the contentious tweet revealing rape victim’s identity.
Subsequently, various Congress leaders, too, tweeted the image of rape victim’s parents in ‘solidarity’ with Rahul Gandhi who violated the POCSO Act. Those tweets were also eventually flagged and some accounts were locked out. Then, many Congress leaders changed their profile picture and name to that of Rahul Gandhi to again show solidarity. However, this was also in violation of Twitter policy and again many Congress leaders’ social media accounts were locked out.
The Congress leaders then cried foul that Twitter was acting on behest of Indian government despite having violated the law of the land. Many netizens speculated that this could be shadowboxing between Twitter and Congress so that Twitter appears neutral and can have a freehand for suspending/restricting Twitter accounts of BJP leaders ahead of high stakes elections in coming months.
Now, while Twitter has unlocked Rahul Gandhi’s account, he has still not tweeted.
On August 16, United States President Joe Biden gave a statement over the ongoing crisis in Afghanistan. During his address, he said that his National Security team is closely monitoring the ground situation, including the rapid collapse of the government in the hands of the Taliban.
He said the US’s mission in Afghanistan was never about nation-building or creating unified, centralized democracy. It was always about preventing a terrorist attack on US soil.
We went to Afghanistan almost 20 years ago with clear goals: get those who attacked us on September 11, 2001—and make sure al Qaeda could not use Afghanistan as a base from which to attack us again.
We did that—a decade ago.
Our mission was never supposed to be nation building.
Biden added that the US went to Afghanistan almost 20 years ago to ensure Al-Qaeda cannot use Afghanistan as a base for an attack on US soil again. He said the US never gave up on the hunt for Osama Bin Laden and eventually killed him a decade ago.
Biden further stated that the US tried its best to equip the Afghan military against the Taliban but the ‘fall’ was quicker than they expected. He further stated that Russia and China would love to see an extended quagmire in Afghanistan and if the Taliban further tries to attack US, there will be a devastating response.
Biden blames Afghans and their military
Biden stated that Afghanistan’s political leaders ‘gave up’ and fled the country and after that the Afghan military ‘collapsed’ because they were unwilling to fight the Taliban.

Biden also blamed his predecessor Donald Trump for allowing the Taliban to become more powerful. He added that he won’t continue to risk the lives of American soldiers for a war that should have ended long ago.
Biden was against surge as VP
President Biden said that when the surge was proposed in 2009 when he was Vice President of the United States, he had opposed it as, according to him, the mission should have been focused on counterterrorism and not counterinsurgency or nation-building.
Today the terrorist threat has metastasized beyond Afghanistan. We conduct effective counterterrorism missions against terrorist groups in multiple countries where we don’t have a permanent military presence.
He added that terrorism had expanded its roots beyond Afghanistan. Terrorist outfits such as Al Shabaab in Somalia, al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, al-Nusra in Syria, ISIS is trying to create a caliphate in Syria and Iraq and establishing affiliates in multiple countries in Africa and Asia need US attention and resources.
Biden points fingers at former President Trump
President Biden further added that former President Trump had a deal with the Taliban on withdrawal of US forces by May 1, 2021. The agreement between Trump and the Taliban had a clause of ceasefire till May 1, and continuing to letting American troops in Afghanistan would have led to American causalities, claimed Biden.
During his administration, the presence of US troops in Afghanistan was already down to 2,500 from 15,500 that too when the Taliban was at its strongest since 2001. Biden said he had two choices, either to follow through on the agreement or send more troops in Afghanistan, stretching the conflict to the third decade. He decided on the former.
‘Afghanistan army surrendered without a fight’
Biden further added that the Afghan leaders and military surrendered without a fight. He said, “American troops cannot and should not be fighting in a war and dying in a war that Afghan forces are not willing to fight for themselves. We spent over a trillion dollars. We trained and equipped an Afghan military force of some 300,000 strong — incredibly well equipped — a force larger in size than the militaries of many of our NATO allies.”

He further added, “We gave them every tool they could need. We paid their salaries, provided for the maintenance of their air force — something the Taliban doesn’t have. Taliban does not have an air force. We provided close air support.” He said the leaders did not come together for the good of the people of Afghanistan, and they would have never done so even if American troops stayed in the country. He claimed that when he hosted President Ghani and Chairman Abdullah at the White House in June and talked to Ghani in July, he had discussed how Afghanistan should have prepared for the civil wars once US troops leave, but they never did anything.
The US will continue counterterrorism missions without a permanent military presence
Biden said that the US had conducted several counterterrorism missions against terrorist groups without a permanent military presence in the country, and it will do the same in Afghanistan if necessary. He mentioned that he had already deployed 6,000 troops for the safe departure of US and allied civilian personal from the war-struck country, and his administration would continue to accept refugees eligible for Special Immigration Visas.

And once we have completed this mission, we will conclude our military withdrawal. We will end America’s longest war.
He added, “We’re also expanding refugee access to cover other vulnerable Afghans who worked for our embassy: US non-governmental agencies — or the US non-governmental organizations; and Afghans who otherwise are at great risk; and US news agencies.”
The military mission will be limited in scope
Biden further said that the current military mission would be short and limited in scope. The main objective would be to get US citizens and allies out of Afghanistan as quickly as possible. “And once we have completed this mission, we will conclude our military withdrawal. We will end America’s longest war after 20 long years of bloodshed,” he said.

He further added, “I will not mislead the American people by claiming that just a little more time in Afghanistan will make all the difference. Nor will I shrink from my share of responsibility for where we are today and how we must move forward from here.”
Adding to the fact that he is the fourth American President to preside over the war in Afghanistan, he is not interested in passing the responsibility to a fifth President. “I am President of the United States of America, and the buck stops with me,” he said.
Congress leader and Member of Parliament from Thiruvananthapuram in a tweet suggested that the Taliban might have recruited some of its members from the Indian state of Kerala.

Kerala a breeding ground for ISIS
Investigations have revealed that ISIS had struck roots in Kerala as far back as 2014 with modules sponsoring religious conversions and trying to motivate professionals to join its fold in Afghanistan and Syria. Last year, in its report on terrorism, the UN cautioned that there are a sizeable number of ISIS terrorists in the Indian state of Kerala, adding that the ISIL Indian affiliate (Hind Wilayah), which was announced on May 10, 2019, has about 180 to 200 members.
Moreover, a charge sheet filed by the National Investigation Agency in July last year, regarding the murder of Special Sub Inspector Wilson exposed the nexus of the ISIS terrorists active and flourishing in the state of Kerala.
Tharoor, however, added new speculation that after ISIS Kerala might have become the next recruitment centre for the Taliban as well.
As the situation in Afghanistan continues to get grim, several Indians in Afghanistan wanting to be repatriated back to the country are said to be in a secure area. In a recent update by the ANI, the Indians will be brought back home safely in a day or two.

The Indian government has reiterated the assurance to evacuate those Indians who wish to leave Afghanistan. Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, “Ministry of External Affairs has set up a Special Afghanistan Cell to coordinate repatriation and other requests from Afghanistan.”
MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi has just informed that the Indian ambassador in Kabul and his staff members will be brought back to India too.
In view of the prevailing circumstances, it has been decided that our Ambassador in Kabul and his Indian staff will move to India immediately.
This was after the evacuation of Indians from Afghanistan was halted after the commercial flights from Hamid Karzai International Airport were suspended.
“We’ll facilitate repatriation to India of those who wish to leave Afghanistan. There are also a number of Afghans who’ve been our partners in the promotion of our mutual developmental, educational & people to people endeavours. We will stand by them,” Bagchi added.
45 Indians, including the embassy staff posted in Afghanistan, were brought back to New Delhi on Monday in a C-17 evacuation flight. As per reports, over 200 Indians, including some 100 personnel of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, awaited evacuation from India’s Kabul mission.
It is notable here that after commercial flights were halted Indian Air Force had deployed two heavy-lift airplanes to evacuate stranded Indians.
Hindus and Sikhs in Afghanistan
The Ministry of External Affairs on Monday assured that it was monitoring the situation “on a constant basis at high levels” and said it is “in constant touch with the representatives of Afghan Sikh and Hindu communities”.
“The Government will take all steps to ensure the safety and security of Indian nationals and our interests in Afghanistan,” guaranteed MEA spokesperson.
Manjinder Singh Sirsa of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) said that about 320 Sikh and Hindus have taken shelter at a Gurdwara in Kabul.
Fall of Kabul
After a month-long offensive against the Afghan army, terrorists associated with the Islamist outfit Taliban finally reached the gates of Kabul on Sunday (August 15). After entering the capital city, a Taliban delegation made their way to the presidential palace and urged President Ashraf Ghani to surrender to avoid bloodshed.
Congress activist Andrea D’souza aka Ria Revealed on Twitter floated a conspiracy theory that Indian laws prevent Prime Minister Modi from contesting 2024 general elections.

Andrea, alias Ria tweeted that PM Modi’s term ends in 2024 and ‘by law he can’t return back as PM’. She then contemplated who could be next PM face for the BJP.
However, her claims are incorrect.
The Constitution of India empowers any eligible Indian citizen to become the Prime Minister of India, provided that person is the member of either Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha. For a person to become member of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, minimum age requirement is 25 and 30 years respectively.
There is no limit of number of terms a prime minister can serve India. To put things in perspective, Jawaharlal Nehru was the Interim Prime Minister of India right after Independence and he was reelected thrice in subsequent terms in 1952, 1957 and 1962 elections.
The United States, however, has a limit on number terms and years and India works as per Indian Constitution and not American.
In conclusion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi can very well contest 2024 elections and swear in for the third term if Indian citizens vote for him.

CNN reporter Clarissa Ward reported from Kabul, Afghanistan that she was told to stand to the side because she was a woman, only confirming that life has changed radically for women in the country. She reported from the ground wearing a Hijab and covered from head to toe in black clothing.
Clarissa Ward said, “They’re just chanting ‘Death to America’ but they seem friendly at the same time.” She described the scene as bizarre, observing that although the Taliban terrorists appeared friendly, the “welcoming spirit only extends so far and my presence soon creates tension.”
Ward also said that she had seen “far fewer women” in the streets of Kabul than on previous occasions and the ones she saw “tend to be dressed more conservatively than they were when they were walking down the streets of Kabul yesterday.”
“They’ve just told me to stand to the side because I’m a woman,” she said at one point. She also said that she was dressed in a fashion she would not normally wear for work.

Taliban managed to capture Kabul on Sunday following US exit from Afghanistan after two decades of warfare. Chaotic scenes were observed at the Kabul Airport as huge crowds rushed into the runaway to flee the country.
Some youths also latched on to the wheels and engines of the flights leaving the country with some falling from the sky to their death after take-off.
Afghanistan is in throes of chaos and anarchy as Taliban terrorists on Sunday stormed the capital Kabul, effectively overthrowing the US-backed government of Afghanistan and touching off a massive humanitarian crisis as people rushed to the Kabul airport to escape the country.
Shocking visuals of panic-stricken people wanting to flee the terrible fate that awaits them under the Talibani rule have surfaced on the internet. Thousands of frantic people, searching for a way out of the country, flocked to the Kabul airport and mobbed the tarmac. Videos that are now doing the rounds on the internet also showed legions of Afghans jostling their way into aeroplanes, with some of them even clinging on the wheels of the planes to fly out of the country with the Taliban poised to return to power.
The crisis that unfolded at the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul takes one back to the time when lakhs of Indians got stranded in Kuwait after the dictator of neighbouring Iraq, Saddam Hussein announced a war on the country. Decades later, the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq and the subsequent evacuation of over 1,70,000 Indians were portrayed in the Akshay Kumar-starrer Bollywood movie Airlift (2016).
The Iraqi invasion of Kuwait
On August 2, 1990, Iraqi forces started the invasion of Kuwait. However, within two days of combat, the Kuwaiti forces were either overrun by the Iraqi Republican Guard or retreated to neighbouring Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. The Emirate of Kuwait was annexed, and a few days later, Saddam Hussein announced that it was the 19th province of Iraq.
As 1,00,000 Iraqi soldiers coupled with 700 tanks marched into Kuwait, the royal family of Kuwait fled to Saudi Arabia. But the general population was left to fend for themselves. Amongst those stranded in Kuwait, over 1,70,000 of them were Indians.
The Indian government found itself in a fix. It could not condemn the invasion of Kuwait and risk the wrath of Saddam Hussein when so many of its citizens were stranded in Iraq. With a teetering economy, India was massively dependent on Arab nations, including Iraq, and therefore, it was not a prudent decision, even financially, to tick off Saddam Hussein with an open condemnation. So, India maintained a dignified silence on the issue, shifting her focus on repatriating the stranded nationals.
India’s ambitious evacuation plan to airlift over 1,70,000 stranded expatriates
With thousands of Indians stuck in Kuwait, the Indian government hashed out an ambitious evacuation operation, which was later termed as the largest air evacuation mission ever. The then Foreign Minister IK Gujral sought an audience with Hussein. When the duo met, Hussein pulled Gujral in a bear hug, photos of which went global and irked India’s allies. The officials from the Indian administration that visited along with Gujral, met Saddam Hussein and got him on board to arrange the repatriation of stranded Indian nationals.
According to those involved in the negotiations, Saddam Hussein patiently listened to the official viewpoint of the Indian delegation and the plans to evacuate their nationals. He reportedly iterated his position and agreed to facilitate the return of the Indian nationals.
Initially, the Indian government arranged a few military aircrafts to evacuate the elderly, women and children. However, due to long and interminable air space clearance procedure, this did not seem like a practical solution. So the government turned to Air India for help.
On August 13, 1990, 12 days after the invasion took place, the evacuation process kicked off as Air India flights brought home the first batch of Indians who were stranded in Kuwait. Initially, Indians were angry with the government as they were expecting a quicker intervention by the Indian government. But the then Foreign Minister IK Gujral swiftly brought the crowd under control after which chants of “Bharat Mata ki Jai” were also made.
Indian citizens were transported from Kuwait through Iraq and to the borders of Jordan. The airlift took place from the Amman airport as Baghdad was closed and Iran was out of bounds. Reportedly, Saddam Hussein also helped arrange buses from Baghdad to ferry Indians from Kuwait to Amman.
Over the period of the next 2 months, i.e from August 13 to October 11, 1990, more than 1,70,000 Indians were airlifted and repatriated to India. It was one of the most successful evacuation missions ever in the world, with Air India registering itself in the Guinness World Records for executing the largest-ever air evacuation mission.
Besides, a Pakistani Airline crew stranded in Kuwait had wished to be evacuated by Indian aircraft. So, on humanitarian grounds, the Indians officials obliged and helped them in fleeing Kuwait.
On Monday (August 16), Prime Minister Narendra Modi fulfilled the much-awaited promise, of having ice cream together, that he made to Olympic bronze medalist PV Sindhu. PM Modi had hosted a party for the Indian Olympic athletes at his official residence on 7, Lok Kalyan Marg.
Prior to the Indian contingent’s visit to Tokyo Olympics, PM Modi had interacted with the athletes via a video conferencing link. During his conversation with the ace shuttler, the Indian Prime Minister narrated how PV Sindhu was stopped from having ice creams prior to Rio Olympics. PV Sindhu created history as she became the first Indian woman to win medals at two Olympic games. She won the Silver Medal in Badminton at the Rio Olympics in 2016 and won the Bronze Medal at the Tokyo Olympics. The ace shuttler defeated He Bingjiao of China 21- 13, 21-15 in the Bronze Medal match. After her historic win, PV Sindhu visited the Kanaka Durga Temple in Vijayawada on Friday to pray for Gold in the next Olympics.
Later, speaking to the media she said that she had set her eyes on the 2024 Olympics and she prayed that she could win the Gold medal for her nation. She also said that she visited the Durga temple before going to the Olympics and won the bronze medal with goddess blessings. After her historic victory, PV Sindhu went back to her hometown, Hyderabad, where she got a rousing reception from her family.
