A letter to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, dated January 14, states, “Khalsa Aid became the first-ever cross-border international humanitarian aid organization based on the Sikh principle of ‘recognizing the whole human race as one’. Founded by Ravinder (Ravi) Singh, who was struck by the plight of the refugees in Kosovo in 1999, the charity has been providing support around the world to victims of natural and man-made disasters such as floods, earthquakes, famine, and war for over 20 years. They have been able to provide crucial aid to millions of people around the world.”

The letter said, “As the Member of Parliament for Edmonton Mill Woods in the Parliament of Canada, I am honored to nominate Khalsa Aid for the Nobel Peace Prize, with support from the Honourable Prabmeet Singh Sarkaria, Member of Provincial Parliament for Brampton South and Mayor of Brampton, His Worship Patrick Brown. Khalsa Aid is an international NGO with the aim to provide humanitarian aid in disaster areas and civil conflict zones around the world.”

Khalsa Aid is a shady organisation that is suspected to be a front organisation for the Khalistani outfit Babbar Khalsa International (BKI). The NIA had registered a case in this regard in December 2012, alleging that Khalsa Aid was suspected to be one of the organisations linked to the BKI funding the Indian BKI members to commit terror acts in the country.

Recently, Khalsa Aid had set up massage centers at the farmers’ protests in makeshift spaces at the Singhu border raising suspicions that the protests might be a well-thought-out conspiracy by the secessionists to revive Khalistani sentiments by engendering resentment among people against the Modi government.

Babbar Khalsa intends to create an independent Sikh state in India through violent means and is responsible for several terror attacks in the country resulting in many civilian deaths. The Trump administration had declared BKI a threat to American interests.

The NIA had summoned the organisation recently for questioning in connection with the ‘Sikhs For Justice Referendum’ case.

Brisbane Test: Stadium reverberates with chants of ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’, Australian coach says can’t underestimate Indians

The historic victory of Indian cricket team over the Australian side in the latter’s stronghold at Gabba cricket stadium in Brisbane has mesmerised Indians fans and cricket lovers across the globe. Breaking the previously held record of 32 years, India chased down the mammoth target of 328 runs with 3 wickets to spare and retained the Border-Gavaskar trophy.

When Indian skipper Ajinkya Rahane began his address during the post-match presentation on the 5th day of the Brisbane Test, the Indian fans could not help but raise slogans of ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ (All hail Mother India) in unison. The loud cheer and the subsequent sloganeering reverberated in the stadium that even the audience, watching the live telecast, had a ‘goosebump’ moment.

In an earlier video, an Australian fan was seen prompting the crowd on the 4th Day to chant Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ and ‘Vande Mataram’.

Don’t underestimate Indians, says Australian coach Justin Langer

Not only that, the current Australian cricket coach and former opening batsman Justin Langer also seemed to be in awe of India’s superlative performance, not just in the Brisbane Test, but throughout the Test campaign. He said, “First, you cannot take anything for granted. And never ever underestimate the Indians.”

While summing up the masterclass from a predominantly inexperienced Indian lineup, Langer added, “There are 1.5 billion Indians. And if you play in that first 11, then, you are going to be really tough… I cannot compliment India enough. After the first Test match, where we got them out in 3 days for 36 runs, the fightback from them is amazing. Sometimes there are big lessons for us too. You don’t take anything for granted.”

The heroics of the Indian team in Border Gavaskar Trophy

When the Indian cricket team began its tour of Australia in November last year, it would have never imagined that the team would eventually be marred with injuries. As India went into the fourth and final Test match against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on Friday, the team was devoid of star players.

With experienced bowlers such as Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja and RS Ashwin still recovering from injuries, India desperately needed the 29-year-old yorker specialist T Natarajan to come to the team’s rescue. Be it the bowling masterclass of T Natarajan or an all-round batting performance from Shardul Thakur and Washington Sundar in the 1st innings, the inexperience Indian team came together brilliantly to dash Australian hopes in the final day of the series.

With this victory, India has reached the top spot of the ICC Test Championship ratings.

How this New Yorker Article represents Deep-Rooted White Western Racism against ‘Brown Indians’

“The New Yorker” on 15th of January, 2021, published an article by Bill McKibben, titled – Gandhi, History, and the Lessons of the Events at the Capitol. As an Indian, one might feel a sense of pride that the West, the imperialistic west with the White man’s burden is looking towards the East for a solution to resolve the problems with their democracies. But as it turns out, the writers from the west are using their own failures to attack an India which is not fair enough to get their respect as equals, forget being seniors, having old Hindu history of ancient Rigvedic Democracy, secularism and Constitutional Federalism. I had earlier written on my blog urging the West to not use their own follies to attack India and Hinduism. This article in the New Yorker proves the worst of my fears true.

This article Mr Bill McKibben is reflective of the same racism which he claims to have written the piece on. The article is full of so much of factual incorrectness that it can only be attributed to a white man’s intellectual arrogance which allows him to lie about the history of brown people without any fear about ever being called out for the falsehood he spreads.

I had previously also written on this when I had requested the Western commentators to not use the follies of their own political systems and societal prejudices as an excuse to attack India. Most of the majority population of India has suffered centuries of political disenfranchisement as the Blacks in the US, with the only difference being that the Indian Hindus were the original inhabitants of the land, which makes it even worse.

Coming to the charge made on RSS, which is world’s largest philanthropy (and yet non-proselytizing) organization, on the forefronts of service in all-natural and man-made calamities, irrespective of the religion or faith of the victims. The largest and first Kitchen to come up to serve the poor during the COVID Lockdown was run by the RSS. RSS also runs one of the largest chains of schools for children from Tribal and rural India with a massive representation of Muslim students in more than 12000 Vidya Bharti schools run by the Organization.

The reason for this large-scale adoption of RSS-run schools is the renewed interest in quality, secular Education among the masses irrespective of their religious faith. Unfortunately, RSS has largely remained aloof to the modern-day media, which has allowed the religious fanatics who go up in arms defending the Madarassas which are schools of Islamic studies, propagate lies about RSS in the West. Unfortunately, the innocent lack of knowledge of common western masses has now started reflecting in the intellectual leaders and opinion-makers, who we find is as inept at differentiating between the Sikhs and the Sheikhs as the less-aware masses they seek to educate.

There are many social initiatives like opposing the Caste-Construct, protecting the indigenous culture, Languages and Literature of India, Support during natural disasters, which are to the credit of RSS. One thing that is not to the credit of RSS is Nathuram Godse. At the time of Gandhi’s assassination, RSS Chief MS Golwarkar was in Chennai and when informed of the Assassination, his first utterance was- ‘What a misfortune for the country! RSS offices across the country were closed for Thirteen Days of Mourning.

The writer totally relies on the position Congress against RSS given that RSS had offered the staunchest opposition to the imposition of Emergency in India which saw draconian Press censorship and entire Opposition imprisoned, and is the ideological force supportive of the BJP, the Political Party in Power. It is also pertinent to bring to the attention of the readers that the Rahul Gandhi, de-facto Chief of Congress had to apologize in the Highest Court of India for making such baseless charges implicating RSS in the Assassination of the Mahatma. Under Rahul Gandhi, Congress, thrown out of power for their Communal politics and brazen corruption by the democratic liberal society of India, has been attacking the Sangh repeatedly and even Savarkar who was kind of Father figure from all Indian freedom fighters from Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose to Bhagat Singh, trying to get back at the BJP, through them.

While it is understandable that the foreign readers know more about Jawaharlal Nehru than Sardar Patel, the fact remains that but for Gandhi’s affection of Nehru, Sardar Patel was almost elected as the President of Congress (winning against Nehru) and would have been the first Prime Minister of India. Sardar Patel, however, remained one of the tallest leader of India, post-Independence, who served as India’s first Home Minister and was responsible for the amalgamation of more than Five Hundred Princely states as on sovereign Nation. While under pressure from Nehru, RSS was banned and Guru Golwalkar, the head of RSS was arrested.

This was opposed to nation-wide peaceful Satyagrah. On 28th March 1950, Sardar Patel, the Home Minister of India, wrote to Nehru that “my original belief that Bapu’s murder was not the result of an RSS Conspiracy but that of a section of the Hindu Mahasabha has been confirmed.” Unfortunately, facts are largely ignored by the people. In fact, almost a month before the assassination of the Mahatma, Patel had alluded to the deep-rooted conspiracy being run within Congress in a speech he had made in Lucknow on the 6th of January, 1948, where he said, “RSS men are not thieves or dacoits. They are patriots. They love their country.” The ban on RSS was lifted on the 12th of July, 1949. In fact

The author can be forgiven for not knowing the history, but since he lies so conveniently about the present, one can conclude that he is either lazy or a brazen propagandist. He writes “Muslims have faced the loss of Citizenship”. He knows that since this narrative pleases the Pakistani-interest groups, why to bother with the facts. In fact, there is no law passed or initiative was taken by any Government in India which might cause the Indian Muslims to lose Citizenship. India has merely passed the Citizenship Amendment Act which allows the people persecuted for their faith, from hitherto Indian geography, which has post-1947 turned into a theocratic Islamic state, to get expedited citizenship rights should they arrive in India as refugees. It is a pity that in spite of everyday reports of forced conversion, rapes and abduction of minorities like Hindus, Sikhs and Christians, the Western world would not want India to even extend a shelter to the refugees.

The author of New Yorker, forgets even while building the whole anti-India narrative around Gandhi, that Gandhi wanted Citizenship Amendment Act when he had mentioned that those minorities (Hindus, Sikhs, Christians) who were left behind in Pakistan, Afghanistan or Bangladesh should be able to seek shelter in India whenever they want to come to India as their natural home. For obvious reasons, the law does not apply to illegal migrants who move to escape the law or to spread crime and violence. In fact, US routinely deports illegal immigrants, a number constantly rising to reach a high of 438,421 in 2013. Developing and overpopulated nations like India do have a right to protect their citizens from unlawful entrants to the nation while at the same time offering shelter to the persecuted refugees, which India has been doing since the time when Parsis had sought shelter in India in ancient days of Hindu rule while escaping Islamic persecution in their ancient lands.

The writer then refers to the currently elected Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state as ‘an extremist Hindu monk named by the BJP’ as if were some nation where heads of state were nominated by a Monarch or elected through a confusing Postal Ballot. The said extremist Hindu Monk comes from a tradition which was at the forefront of India’s freedom movement and had represented his Constituency five times in the past as an elected Member of Parliament before taking oath as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. His exemplary work has been praised many times by international bodies like WHO. Under his leadership, Eastern UP has also been able to fight the perennial Japanese Encephalitis and received commendations from UNICEF.

Continuing with his lies, the author claims that Adityanath called for building a temple to the Hindu God Ram on top of a mosque destroyed by a mob, and had proposed renaming of one of the Uttar Pradesh’s cities in Godse’s memory. The writer is wrong on both counts. The building of Ram Temple is a demand not of one political leader, rather of a vast Hindu majority. The structure which was brought down was not in use and was not a Mosque. A Hindu temple was ordered to be built at the site where the disputed structure was taken down by the Supreme Court of India based on objective analysis of scientific archaeological evidence which proved without dispute the presence of a Hindu Temple atop which the Islamic structure was built by Islamic invaders by destroying a pre-existing temple.

One needs to read a little bit of History and Supreme Court Judgement to understand that taking down the disputed structure was akin to BLM activists in the US taking down the statue of Edward Colston or Christopher Columbus. The second part of the claim is also inherently wrong since the claim refers to an NYT article by Samir Yasir. The 2017 Article quoted by the writer blatantly lies stating that ‘several Hindu temples are being converted to Godse temple‘ with no reference or substantiation. The writer in NYT claims that the Government of Uttar Pradesh which is led by a firebrand Hindu monk, Yogi Adityanath proposed changing the name of Meerut to Godse City. That propaganda article links to an article from IndiaTV News Desk.

The said source article actually posed this statement as a question as “Meerut to be renamed as Pandit Nathuram Godse Nagar?”. Further, the article clearly explains that it is not the State Government led by ‘Firebrand Hindu leader’ which is proposing the change of name, rather a non-descript Hindu group seeking to get this change and the State Government asking the opinion of the local administration on the matter. It is lazy journalism and pathetically careless Editorial that a charge made in 2017 is quoted with impunity to malign the image of India, which has world’s second-largest Muslim population without checking whether the change of name had happened in 2020 or not.

The lies of one propaganda journalist is quoted by another and thereby it becomes an established truth between two racist intellectuals who is a representative of world’s largest majority, Bill as a Christian supremacist and second-largest majority with Yasir Islamist fanatic decide to lie using one another references. Bill also mentions that Muslims are being killed without having any fact to back the claim. This totally ignores the fact that a thief who died of a heart attack in Police custody was turned into a hate-crime victim, another hoodlum who fought with people for a seat in a crowded train was made into a Messiah, while a Ramalingam hacked to death by evangelists and another Kamlesh Tiwari beheaded for blasphemy is not even spoken about.

While the media houses take matters pertaining to American and European nations pretty seriously, it is rather unfortunate that the brown-skinned nations and their societies be treated with brazen disrespect (a BJP is a Hindu bigot party in the article, but a Pakistan PM or Turkey’s President threatening the world with Nuclear war as a punishment to blasphemy is not, and a Bible-carrying white supremacist is merely a believer). Such articles form the backbone of half-baked reports routinely published by agencies like UN Human Rights Watch and lies oft-repeated are taken by the innocent consumer of these journalistic pieces as solemn truth.

Congress leader Digvijaya Singh’s latest publicity stunt: Makes donation for Ram Mandir construction to score political brownie points

In a bid to turn around his political fortunes, senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh has decided to pull off a publicity stunt by playing to Hindu sentiments using the issue of Ram Mandir construction.

On Monday, Digvijaya donated an amount of ₹1,11,111 to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra but claimed to not know where to make the donation. In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he wrote, “As I am not aware of where to donate money and in which bank account, therefore, I am enclosing a cheque of Rs 1,11,111 for Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra with a hope that you (PM Modi) will get it deposited in an appropriate account,” Singh wrote in a letter to PM Modi.

Interestingly, Digvijaya Singh claimed that he was unaware about where to make the contribution although Shri Ram Janma Bhoomi Tirth Kshetra Trust has put up all payment details on their official social media handles. Instead, the Congress leader chose to write an open letter to the Prime Minister in order to make a political statement.

Digvijaya Singh and his political stunt

Digivijaya Singh went on to make sly remarks against the BJP by claiming that he has never used the issue of Ram Mandir for political gains. He said, “Since religion is a personal affair, there a person should refrain from reinforcing the strength of his Faith in public. Such an act can lead to the path of ‘arrogance’ which can create obstacles in the pursuit of self-development and public welfare… Even though Lord Ram is an integral part of my life, I never used His name to do politics. This has not only given me peace but has protected my religion from being maligned.”

With an over-emphasis on devotion, he added, “I have not used religion as a political tool and will not do so even in future. I don’t link Lord Ram with the concept of nationalism since Mahatma Gandhi has said – Religion is no test of nationality but a personal matter between man and his God.”

Screengrab of the cheque by Digvijaya Singh

Digvijaya Singh tried to take potshots at the BJP for supposedly misusing the name of Lord Ram to further their political motives. The Congress leader gave the impression that even though he and his party leaders uphold the legacy of Lord Ram but they never bring religion into politics. By doing so, he tried to imply that while the Congress is not ‘averse’ to Hindu interests, yet, the BJP is somehow using religion as a ‘barometer’ for proving one’s nationalism.

However, it is important to note that the Congress leader instead chose to ‘publicise’ his contribution to the Ram Mandir cause in order to play to the Hindu sentiments. While shrewdly using the opportunity to create a distinction between his party and the political rival BJP, Digvijaya Singh desperately attempted to politicise the matter in the name of Lord Ram.

As the Congress leader had highlighted earlier that religion is a personal matter, then, what was the need for him to stress on his personal devotion in a publicised letter? This is the same thing that he had been accusing the BJP of doing in his letter to the Prime Minister.

Congress and contradictory stances on Ram Mandir

It may be appropriate for the party’s senior members to recall that it was the Congress-led Central government which had in September 2007, said that there is no historical proof of Lord Ram’s existence. In an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court, the Congress government had then said: “Valmiki Ramayana and Ramcharitmanas admittedly form an important part of ancient Indian literature, but these cannot be said to be historical records to incontrovertibly prove the existence of the characters and occurrences of events depicted therein.”

This sudden shift in Congress’ stance is definitely overwhelming but speaks volumes about their hypocrisy, considering they were the ones who had refused to even acknowledge the very existence of Lord Ram. The sudden exuberance now displayed by the Congress bigwigs over the construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya clearly goes on to indicate that either the party’s senior members have forgotten history or are assuming that the public has forgotten it.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan never called for “tracking working women”: How liberals made a story out of nothing

You must have heard. Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan is planning to register and track every movement of working women. What more can you expect from the patriarchal, sexist old men of the BJP who run that cow belt state? Headlines in liberal media have already delivered their verdict. Feminists have already made bold declarations of intent: they will never register! A song or poem, on the lines of “kaagaz nahin dikhayenge” may also be in the works.

The Madhya Pradesh government clarified that this was only a proposal to help with security. It had no intention of tracking anyone and would apply equally to both men and women. But this did not stop India’s feminists from fighting the most important women’s rights battle in a generation. A number of left-wing opinion sites chimed in, uncovering all sorts of ulterior motives that you may not have noticed at first.

But first, let us check out what the Chief Minister actually said. Here is the video. Luckily, it is from Barkha’s Mojo Story, which should give me some protection from criticism by liberals. Anyway, ignore the title of the video and just listen to what the Chief Minister said (starting 0:20)

Koi mazdoori karne, kaam karne ke liye bhi koi beti-beta baahar jayega, to pehle uska registration zile mein kiya jayega…. Pradesh se baahar jaana hai to zile mein registration hoga ki beta kahaan ja raha hai, beti kahaan ja rahi hai…

Here I have put in boldface the part where he talks about sons and daughters, as well as the masculine forms of the verbs he used in his sentences. He was always talking about both sons and daughters.

After this, he launched into a minute of explanation of how the policy would serve and protect women. Why would he do that? Perhaps because he was speaking at an event called “Samman,” a fortnight-long awareness program about crimes against women.

That was all there was to this story. But who will tell the feminists who are determined to make this the biggest women’s rights battle of this generation?

Incidentally, the Indian state has a number of policies that you could see as paternalistic towards women. For instance, rebates on stamp duty, property tax, slightly cheaper loans and so on. Even Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT) from the government are generally made into the accounts of women in the household. We will not even get into laws on domestic violence or sexual harassment which are not gender-neutral. Till now, these have mostly been regarded as positive measures, necessary for the empowerment of women. But if you wanted, you could turn it around on its head, and argue that they are paternalistic towards women. A woman can earn her money as much as a man. Does she really need a cheaper loan to buy a house?

But that’s a much bigger, more nuanced argument. And it had nothing to do with what Shivraj Singh Chouhan had proposed. His plan was gender-neutral.

Are there legitimate privacy concerns here about the Madhya Pradesh government proposal? Probably, for both men and women. But again, that’s a completely separate debate, having nothing to do with sexism or patriarchy.

But feminists and liberals did not seem to care. They just wanted to scratch their itch against the BJP.

At the risk of being accused of being paternalistic (or worse), I have a humble suggestion for all the feminists out there. The laws in this country allow a Muslim woman to inherit only half of what sons are entitled to. The laws in this country allow for child marriage of Muslim girls. And the laws even protect female genital mutilation of babies in certain Indian Muslim communities. Perhaps we can all come together and raise our voices against that. It is 2021. You have no excuse.

‘Doob maro. If you have the courage, try doing something similar with people of other religion’, Raju Srivastav tears into makers of Tandav

The web series Tandav, which was released on January 15 on Amazon Prime, has been on the receiving end for its alleged casteist and Hinduphobic content. Alleging that the series has hurt the sentiments of Hindus, viewers have been demanding an apology from the makers of the web series. Amid the growing criticism, the veteran stand-up comedian Raju Srivastav also weighed in on the ongoing controversies linked with Saif Ali Khan starrer web series Tandav.

Srivastav, without mincing his words, slams the makers of the web series for shamelessly playing with the religious sentiments of Hindus. He says that this is not the first time something as despicable as this has happened. Alleging a deep conspiracy, the comedian claims that consistent efforts to insult the Hindu dharma have been made in the past as well.

Srivastav said that he has many times in the past warned his viewers about the emergence of this deep-seated conspiracy against Hindus.

You can never crack jokes on the other religion coz you know you will be beheaded: Raju Srivastav on the Tandav controversy

Srivastav lambasts at the makers of such web series saying that such people should be ashamed of themselves for misusing freedom of expression to disrespect Hinduism and the Hindu deities. “Sharam Karo. Doob maro. Tumhe sharam aani chahiye, Hindu devi devtaon ka mazak udate hue (You should be ashamaed of yourself for making fun of Hindu gods and goddesses)”.

He further dared them to make fun of other faiths like this. “If you have the courage, try and make fun of the other religion. Try and crack jokes on the people belonging to the other religion. You can never muster the courage to do so because you know you will be beheaded even if you think of attempting it”, said the visibly miffed Raju Srivastav.

Comedian Raju Srivastav calls Saif Ali Khan a frequent offender

The comedian slams Saif Ali Khan saying that he is a frequent offender, but no one has the courage to stop him. Hindus are large-hearted people. “Hindus tend to forgive and forget easily. This is our shortcoming which people often exploit, opines the comedian, furthering that it is high time the Hindus have to take a firm stand for themselves. We have to stand up for ourselves,” says Raju Srivastav.

The comedian opined that viewers are demanding that those particular scenes where Hindu God and Goddess have been mocked be removed from the web series, but it won’t be enough. The makers of the web series should be penalised so that they can be an example for all those you dare to play with the sentiments of Hindus.

Raju Srivastav further added that the OTT Platforms having absolute freedom from censorship has led to repeated attacks on Hindu sentiments and thus making strict laws to regulate the content on these OTT platforms in the need of the hour.

Tandav controversy

There are several scenes in the web series Tandav that are causing outrage on social media. In one scene, actor Zeeshan Ayyub had mocked Lord Shiva, while in the other scene, there were casteist slurs. As a whole, the series allegedly has the potential to cause religious disharmony in the country, as per the FIR registered by UP police. Several complaints have been filed against the series, including one by BJP’s Ram Kadam and another by BJP’s Kapil Mishra. I&B ministry have also summoned makers of the series in connection to the controversial scenes.

Director Ali Abbas Zafar on Monday took to social media to apologise for offending the sentiments of viewers. He further claimed that they are working with the ministry to resolve the concerns raised.

Has China constructed a new village inside Arunachal Pradesh? Not quite: How NDTV misled with its ‘exclusive’ report

In 2017, China started a dubious campaign called ‘Plan for the Construction of Well-Off Villages in the Border Areas of the Tibet Autonomous Region (2017-2020)’ with an aim to establish more than 600 “well-off” (Chinese: Xiaokang) villages as Border defence villages. The aim of these villages was to relocate the villagers, especially CCP cadres, to border areas, to ring-fence the control around Tibet and its population more tightly as part of its occupation of Tibet and to control Tibetan people’s passage into India.

In words of Chairman Xi Jinping “To govern the country well we must first govern the frontiers well, and to govern the frontiers well, we must first ensure stability in Tibet.” And that is why, most of these villages, were planned and have been built in border areas of Nyingtri, which borders India’s Arunachal Pradesh and Shigatse. The villages are built mostly along the passages that Tibetans take to enter India directly or via Nepal. The entire plan was built along creating a wall around Tibet borders, to contain Tibetans more effectively. Not even a single village was supposed to be built across China’s sphere of influence, so as to not hamper CCP’s command and control of the village.

Thus, the village that fired up the Indian media yesterday, had nothing to do with India per se. Though it can obviously be inferred logically that populating disputed areas, as is the case in the village under question here, China can assert its control over the area better and can claim that owing to local population being Chinese, the areas is effectively Chinese too. Hence it serves two exceptionally good purposes for China. However, the point remains that the village was not inside Indian territory.

The report of this village, located on the banks of Tsari Chu river in Upper Subansiri district, an area along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), was bought out by NDTV yesterday, duly supported by satellite imagery and a picture of the village, claiming that Chinese have built a village 4.5 km inside Indian territory. The report was written by NDTV journalist Vishnu Som.

The statement made in lambent light of ongoing Indo-China tensions does nothing but provide a mental image of Chinese aggression deep into India and with such impunity that they have started building housing projects. Nothing could be further from the truth!

Border village plan, with nearly $5 Billion investment was supposed to end in 2020, and that is why we see these villages now. The Ladakh standoff has nothing to do with this development at all, and none of the villages was to be beyond Chinese borders. Also, the village has been built along the Chinese Xingquionpuzhang to Migyitun Defence highway. The highway goes way ahead for 2-3 Km beyond the village, all within Chinese occupied territory and Migyitun township, as shown by township map of China. Hypothetically speaking, if this village was inside Indian territory, how would Chinese maintain it?

The nearest military post is a couple of kilometres away. Who will defend the civilians living there and how will they get electricity, water, internet, schooling, health etc? Who will be responsible for their safety when Indian authorities come knocking on the door? Where will they farm, work and earn?  So why would Chinese build a village 5 km inside India when at the first instance the residents would be forced to run back to China for security and food!

This is the same area, Upper Subansiri, where 5 Indians were kidnapped by PLA and later released in September 2020. Unless Chinese came deep within Indian territory just to kidnap 5 porters, and later release them too, it can be safely assumed that the area is well within the control of China and its Army. And it has been under their control since 1959. The same was confirmed by many senior military officers, other media portals and locals from Arunachal on Twitter yesterday, after reading this report.

In fact, it is pertinent to note here that NDTV itself added this detail in their report. However, for some mysterious reason, chose to sensationalise the story to create confusion. Though this line was added only after social media outrage calling our their blatant lies.

Screenshot from report by NDTV

Having served and commanded in the area, the firsthand information of General officers cannot be disputed. As the saying goes in Army – You know your Area of Responsibility like the back of your hand. The area is without any doubt under Chinese occupation but claimed by India since long as it belongs to Indian side of McMohan line. If we really had to make noise, it should not have been over this one village, but roads, military barracks, installations, townships, airports and much more that have been built over the decades in all occupied territories.

But then there is no end to the hue and cry we will have to raise since there are Aksaichin and PoK too. Practically speaking, once the area is under occupation, the enemy is bound to build infrastructure there and there is nothing you can do about it except raise concern at international forums and also try to match the development along the border area.

The claim of coming inside Indian territory, and building a village falls flat on the tactical and strategic front also. If you could sneak into enemy territory with an aim to capture it, what would you build, a military fortification or a village? As amply proven in the case of present Leh issue, where both India and China with an aim to assert control over the area have been furiously busy building military infrastructure and roads to connect them.

If the aim were to occupy the area, why didn’t Chinese build a village there? Simply because it’s impossible to achieve and even more impossible to defend and maintain. You cannot carry out construction activities that would last for months inside enemy territory. Not to mention which civilian would be ready to go and why would they volunteer? It will be naïve of us to think that Chinese locals happily sauntered off across LAC with a dream to start living in India. So the only thing PLA would and have done to dominate the area is build military posts. No civilian population or a village is ever built ahead of Military line of defence. That is why there is a No man’s land! And in this case, the No Man’s land extends ahead of a major Chinese post, that was built in 2010, and if a couple of kilometres south of this new village.

Having said this, one still cannot take away the responsibility Indian gov holds in countering these developments by valid means. Yes, we cannot go to war every time China builds a village or road in occupied territory, but we should also not keep sighing helplessly. The way we are building infrastructure and road network in Ladakh, the same model needs to be applied here as well. We need to match boots with boots and brick by brick. We cannot be truly a regional and global power if there we leave these gaps unattended to right on our borders.

China is on the path of reviving colonialism somehow. Its imperialist plans are evident in the South China Sea, Tibet and borders along all neighbouring countries. India is the nearest and only major opposing force standing in its way. Divided we fall! Difference of opinions and criticism of the government should not translate to sly messaging which is almost on lines of hurting national morale and denigrating the image of Armed forces, who are dedicatedly guarding our borders round the clock and making huge sacrifices for our safety. As long as even one Indian soldier is standing guard, the desperate neighbours can keep trying, they will not get an inch inside now, leave aside building a village.

The Government of India has written to Will Cathcart, the CEO of WhatsApp, regarding privacy concerns in the aftermath of sweeping policy changes proposed by the messenger app. The Government has expressed its concerns regarding the implications it could have for users in India.

The letter states, “The changes to the WhatsApp Privacy Policy and Terms of Service outline the vast amounts and categories of data that is collected by WhatsApp and how it will be shared with other Facebook companies. These changes enable WhatsApp, and other Facebook Companies, to make invasive and precise inferences about users which may not be reasonably foreseen or expected by users in the ordinary course of accessing these services.”

“These changes notify users that WhatsApp will collect highly invasive and granular metadata, such as time, frequency and duration of interactions, group names, payments and transaction data, online status, location indicators, as well as any messages shared by users with business accounts. Further, these changes indicate that this information will be shared with other Facebook Companies for an extremely expansive and broad set of purposes, without providing users with any option to opt-out of this integration across social media platforms,” it adds.

The Government noted that such a policy would entail the dissolution of “any meaningful distinction” between Facebook Companies and WhatsApp. The Government also emphasized its sovereignty and said that “any unilateral changes to the WhatsApp Terms of Service and Privacy would not be fair and acceptable.”

Consequently, the Government of India urged the platform to “withdraw the proposed changes.” “Further, you are urged to reconsider your approach to respect the informational privacy, freedom of choice and data security Of Indian citizens,” the letter stated. It also pointed out that the difference between the WhatsApp privacy policy for Indian users and Europe’s.

While the latter’s data is protected from being used by Facebook Companies, the former is not awarded the same protection. The letter said, “This differential and discriminatory treatment of Indian and European users is attracting serious criticism and betrays a lack of respect for the rights and interests of Indian citizens, who form a substantial portion of WhatsApp’s user base. Such a differential treatment is prejudicial to the interests of the Indian users and is viewed with serious concern by the Government.”

The Government of India also noted that the company was being unfair to Indian users. It said, “The Government of India is also concerned with the way in which Indian users have been made subject to these changes. By not providing Indian users with the ability to opt-out of this data sharing with other Facebook Companies, WhatsApp is treating users with an ‘all-or-nothing’ approach.”

“This approach leverages the social significance of WhatsApp to force users into a bargain which may infringe on their interests in relation to informational privacy and information security. This ‘all or-nothing’ approach takes away any meaningful choice from Indian users,” it added.

The Government of India has also asked WhatsApp a series of pertinent questions. Some of them are:

  • Please provide details of the services provided by the WhatsApp application in India.
  • Please disclose the exact categories of data that the WhatsApp application collects from Indian users.
  • Does WhatsApp conduct profiling of Indian users on basis of their of your application? What nature of profiling is conducted?
  • Is there any difference between the privacy policy of the WhatsApp application in India and in Other countries?

The Government of India has also sought information regarding the messenger app’s data security, information security, cyber security, privacy and encryption policies with regards to Indian users. GoI also seeks to know whether WhatsApp has provided access to its user data to a third party. WhatsApp has been directed to respond within a week.

WhatsApp had said that as part of its new privacy policy it would share user data with other Facebook companies. This led its users to believe that WhatsApp would now be able to peek into personal messages of its users and it would share the personal data of users with Facebook. Facebook-owned Whatsapp had given February 8th as the date after which the app would stop working on devices and accounts would be suspended if the new policy was not accepted. As a result, many people started moving to other apps like Signal and Telegram looking for a substitute.

However, after facing flak from its users, WhatsApp had decided to delay its policy update saying users will be provided more time to to ‘understand the policy update’.

A video has been doing rounds on social media where AAP workers are seen welcoming their senior leader Somnath Bharti after his release from Sultanpur district jail in Uttar Pradesh with ‘murdabad’ slogans against Prime Minister Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

In the video, a heavily garlanded Somnath Bharti is seen walking in the middle, surrounded by a handful of his loyalist who chant: “Jail ka taala toot gaya, Sher humara choot gaya” (locks of the prison have been broken, our lion has been released) and “Modi-Yogi murdabad, Modi-Yogi hai hai” slogans to welcome their senior leader.

It may be recalled that the senior AAP leader was sent to 14 days judicial custody for dishing out death threats to Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath. He was granted bail on Friday, but had to remain in jail as the bail hearing for another case was scheduled the next day. On Monday, Special Judge Vinod K Braanwal in the MP-MLA court had ordered his release.

Somnath Bharti threatens UP police official, issues death threats to CM Yogi

Somnath Bharti was sent to judicial custody after he misbehaved with police officials in Uttar Pradesh. Ink was thrown at him while he was on his way to visit government schools in Rae Bareli. Following the ink attack, an enraged Bharti resorted to dishing out death threats to Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath.

Somnath Bharti tweeted on January 11 saying, “Shocked to learn that my bail application has been kept pending till 13th January n I am sent to judicial custody of 14 days.”

Actually, on January 11, the Malviya Nagar MLA had heated exchange with the police officials who stopped him from visiting schools. Later, an unknown person splattered ink on Bharati while he was talking to officials. After the incident, Bharti was detained in the guest house itself while the man who threw ink on him managed to escape.

“I will get you sacked. Bear this in mind. I can identify all of you. I will get all the officers who are trying to stop me today sacked,” said Somnath Bharti while threatening the police officer who stopped him from leaving the guesthouse.

“Nothing is going to happen from this. Yogi Adityanath’s death is assured. You have helped the attacker escape. You need to understand this. Tell Yogi Adityanath he would not achieve from such attacks,” Somnath Bharti said.

‘This is our global approach’: After CEO Jack Dorsey, Twitter legal head Vijaya Gadde floats ‘deamplification’ and more account suspensions

Project Veritas, a prominent journalism initiative, has now released a video where Vijaya Gadde, the legal and policy head of Twitter, can be seen discussing censorship on a global scale. Earlier, Project Veritas had released a video of Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey where he was seen making it clear that Donald Trump’s ban was merely the beginning.

Vijaya Gadde refers to ‘de-amplification’ and permanently suspending accounts that spread ‘conspiracy theories’. It is not clear how the term ‘conspiracy theories’ will be defined or how the policy will be implemented. She also says that they have applied to the United States lessons they have learnt from other markets.

“..in other places around the world where we have seen violence unfold as a result of either misleading information or coded rhetoric. So, a lot of our learnings here have come from other markets. So, in that sense, you know, we do feel like it is – this is our global approach,” she said.

“We need to be very focused on being able to enforce any of these policies or enforcement decisions we make at scale,” said Vijaya Gadde.

This comes after Jack Dorsey had made it clear that censorship on Twitter would only escalate. Jack Dorsey had told employees, “We know we are focused on one account right now, but this is going to be much bigger than just one account, and it’s going to go on for much longer than just this day, this week, the next few weeks, going on beyond inauguration. We have to expect that. We have to be ready for that.”

The suspension of Donald Trump by social media platforms has taken the world by storm. Leaders around the world, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, have condemned the suspension by Twitter and called it ‘problematic’. However, it does not appear that Twitter is willing to heed such words of concern.
