Largest Communist cover up of recent times: China must be investigated for its role in spreading the Coronavirus, WHO and its Director General should be probed

0

Till date, the pandemic of Covid-19 has taken a toll of millions. With approximately 4.46 million Covid-19 cases reported worldwide, and the numbers increasing every single day, this pandemic has sufficiently challenged our capabilities. With hardly any part of the globe remaining unscathed from this calamity, the post-Covid-19 world will not be the same. While the majority of the world has united in this fight against the pandemic and the advancements in medical research will hopefully soon result in its containment, what will remain with humankind is a vital experience for the future incidents.

The origin of Covid-19 has been traced to a seafood market in the Chinese commercial city of Wuhan. Despite speculations about SARS-CoV-2 having been lab engineered, till date no proof consolidates it. A scientific study published in the journal, Nature Medicine, has ruled out the possibility of the responsible virus SARS-CoV-2 being man-made or a biological weapon leaked through a lab. According to World Health Organisation’s (WHO), by December 31,, 2019, cases of pneumonia were reported in only a few clusters of Hubei province, while by January 5, 2020 the causative agent was not identified as a new virus. A week after this, it crossed the boundaries of China and the first case was reported outside of China in Thailand. On January 14, WHO announced a limited human to human transmission of this virus. Finally, it was on March 11, 2020 that WHO declared it as a pandemic. From the detection of the first few cases, to its culmination into a global pandemic, the possible failures in handling and the resulting socio-economic cost (impact) to human life have been a the subject of relentless discussion.

SARS vs Covid-19: Economic development is the key for epidemic turned to pandemic

China suffered SARS in 2002 caused by SARS-CoV virus. It was an epidemic that affected 26 countries with a global death toll of around 8000 individuals. This stands in no comparison to the current statistics of covid19 which reported 4633 deaths in China and 300,000 deaths in the world and counting (till 14th May 2020). SARS and Covid-19, both diseases have demonstrated similar signs and symptoms. Hence, a major question arises – why Covid-19 turned into a pandemic in 2020 while SARS had a local effect in 2002?

The economic development of China can be taken into account. In the intervening period of about 20 years GDP of People’s Republic of China has jumped from 1.47 trillion to 14.3 trillion. Today, China is the home to the highest number of middle-class families, with around 400 million people who can financially afford any wild or exotic meat from wet markets and travel around the world. Reports indicate, Chinese tourists had made over 6 million trips to Europe in year 2018. China is not just a world’s factory but has also established many mighty multinational companies in areas of IT, finance and construction. Their offices spread across all parts of the globe. With a global market at its disposition, and active businesses across every continent, global spread of Covid-19 can be attributed to both tourism and business-related movements of Chinese work forces. Despite the growing concern, the Chinese work forces were neither screened nor tracked at Chinese checkpoints, upon outbreak of Covid-19. The concern however, is why Chinese authorities turned a blind eye? Was it deliberate or with calculated risk?

Who is accountable for loss: China or WHO

Disease outbreak can emerge anywhere, but can anyone be held responsible for the failure in containing it? What are the roles of multilateral organisations in regulating or controlling it? Few international bodies e.g., United Nations (UN) have been targeted from time to time for their biases, for example, UN peacekeeping mission in Rwanda. Despite article 40 of chapter VII of the UN charter mentioned Security Council will follow act of impartiality or neutrality (is often associated with passivity and inaction) and without prejudice of the parties concerned; WHO’s action does not match the set paradigm. How world and nation(s) should act upon injustice and biases of multilateral organisations?

During the emergence of Covid-19 in Wuhan, the role of China, WHO and the director general (DG) Tedros Adhanom of WHO should be correctly called for a probe. From the beginning of the reported outbreak, the role of China has been highly questionable regarding – the reporting of onset of pandemic, the gravity of its spread; why it took around 14 days to declare its human to human transmission when by that time it had crossed the boundaries and reached Thailand. It is not just about delaying the primary information about number of patients, death, but also accuracy of information, cleaning the area and destroying the primary evidences from Hunan seafood market. Their actions reasonably question the intent of Chinese administrations and health authorities.

Though the research article published on March 17, 2020 in Nature Medicine journal ‘The proximal origin of SARS-CoV-2’ by Kristian G. Andersen suggest that SARS-CoV-2 has not been purposefully manipulated in lab, but due to lack of genome sequences of the virus from very early cases it also does not disprove the former speculated theory of its origin. A published report in ‘The Lancet’ journal on January 24, 2020 by a large group of Chinese researchers reported that one third of the 41 Covid-19 hospitalized patients did not have any link to the seafood market. As per Chinese health authorities and the WHO, first report of pneumonia-like symptoms took place on December 8, 2019, but considering the incubation period (in between infection and occurrences of symptoms) the first infection must have been taken place around November 2019 and thus originate the doubt of primary source of infections.

A 33- year old doctor Li Wenliang who died of coronavirus infection, was earlier heavily criticized by Chinese government for spreading rumours about a new kind of pneumonia but later declared him as martyr. On April 16, 2020, the USA Secretary of state, Mike Pompeo has demanded that China should come clean following the published report that corona virus was originated in ‘Wuhan Institute of Virology’ not as a bio-weapon but just to prove that Chinese scientists superiority to their US counterpart in identifying emerging virus threat and lab worker(s) became ‘Patient Zero’ in some unfortunate lab-accident. On April 17, 2020, Chinese news agency Xinhua added 1300 more deaths reports caused by Covid-19 in the pandemic epicentre, Wuhan.

Together with these anomalies in information of onset and spread of Covid-19, a series of concerns about the Chinese government are justified. It should be considered as a largest communist-style cover up in recent times. It doesn’t stop at this point. The blame game continues. While the Chinese spokesperson Lijian Zhao unsuccessfully tried to twist the global perceptions of China by blaming USA for the pandemic, in response that the US president Donald Trump labels corona virus as ‘Chinese virus’. Canadian epidemiologist, Bruce Aylward who visited China on behalf of WHO, said there was ‘huge back and forth’ with Chinese officials and they did not want to refer to the pathogen as ‘dangerous’.

Another reason to the Covid-19 outbreak after the 2002 SARS epidemic is the uncontrolled wet market of China where live animals are sold for meat consumptions. There are more than 50 wild species which are sold in wet markets in which of course a few are farmed but yet harbour viruses. These traffic and trade zones create an environment where most of the viruses crosses the host’s species barrier and turned into zoonotic diseases. Poor hygiene of such markets accentuates the health risk imposed on humans. Another aspect is the ethical issue of wild and exotic-animal meat consumption which further fuels illegal hunting around the globe. In the global flat world, post-covid19 pandemic food consumption is not going to be a cultural and personal choice any longer! Nevertheless, China banned on holding wildlife in wet market post SARS but was not sufficient!

If China had been a more responsible member of the globalisation phenomenon, it would have acted in a swift and transparent manner in sharing the necessary information, preventing such a catastrophe and disbursing with necessary means to alleviate these crises.

WHO: who’s who?

The global role of WHO has never been such deplored since its inception as an UN body. In current circumstances, it is sarcastically termed as Wuhan Health Organisation because of the alleged support it lends to China and too much trust it apparently shows on the information provided by the Chinese communist regime. On January 14, 2020, WHO tweeted for, ‘No clear evidence of human-to-human transmission of the novel #coronavirus’ although at the same point of time Chinese government bulletin reported, ‘The possibility of limited human-to-human transmission cannot be excluded’. This shows the lacklustre of WHO at both, resource level and organisational level.

China started interfering in many international organisations and its influence on them is quite visible. It is quite evident that the Chinese premier, Xi Jinping kept the WHO DG, Tedros Adhanom quite close (Memes were circulated showing how Xi Jinping is standing tall and WHO’s DG Tedros Adhanom is running for the handshake). The attitude of WHO has been clearly very pliant and at every press brief in early times, Tedros appeared to be defending China’s role in handling Covid-19. Instead of being sceptical, follow protocol, advise preventive and regulatory measures, devise/improvise effective containment strategies, try to mitigate the information gap between the affected and susceptible countries take steps to ensure answers to the questions raised by USA and western media that blamed China for pandemic, he on the contrary, applauded the role of China, ‘China is to be congratulated for the extraordinary measures it has taken to contain the outbreak despite the severe social and economic impact that is having on China’, this too very early!

WHO DG: an inept leader?

With a mere PhD in malaria research, the Ethopian, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus became the first African to become the DG of the WHO, who was elected with overwhelming majority despite his non-medical background. His role in administration was not sudden. He had seven years of experiences as health minister of Ethiopia, followed by that of a foreign-affairs minister of Ethiopia thus he carries experiences of both portfolio. During his last days of campaign for DG of WHO, stories resurfaced for cover-up of three cholera epidemics in Ethiopia during his term as a health minister, which he denied as a ‘last-minute smear campaign’. With all his experiences and familiarities with international stint and skills as a head of WHO, Tedros has not only miserably failed in his personal capacity to save the face of the WHO but also missed a chance to be a forefront leader.

Eagle vs Dragon: a fight for supremacy as a pretext for covid19

By April 22, 2020, USA declared as many as 1.06 million confirmed cases of Covid-19 that cost 61504 lives. Amidst lockdown in the USA, the Trump administration has halted its WHO funding for its failure to warn the member countries. As per US president Trump, the WHO made a ‘dangerous and costly’ decision to oppose travel restrictions from China and it’s cost estimated a total of 22 million unemployment claims, a cost that US has never seen after the great recession of 2008. Much of its attribution goes to organisational structure of WHO, making it vulnerable to misinformation. After this debacle, US would want to fill the seat in WHO’s executive board which is vacant since 2018. USA’s contribution to the WHO is around $400 to $500 million dollars around ten times compared to that of China.

Being the largest donor, US faces global resistance when it announces to cut its WHO funding. German foreign minister, Heiko Maas describes that cutting fund is like ‘throwing the pilot out of the plane in mid-flight’. Trump’s immediate plan to cut the funding will jeopardize the global fight against Covid-19 and vaccine development but will also affect other on-going vaccination programmes in African countries. Critics support the US concern but they unanimously believe there will be enough time later to review the action of WHO once pandemic is in control. The reactions from the white house led by Donald Trump that came initially around third week of March were not that fierce, but as the infections and mortality increased and with elections standing next door, they needed to act. Also, to cover up his poor handling of this crisis, they call for some action on WHO and China.

The socio-economic cost of the pandemic

As per the estimate of the ‘International Monetary Fund’, Covid-19 would cost to world economy greater than 9 trillion dollars over 2 years. This means Covid-19 outbreak will lead to global economy shrinkage by 3% alone in 2020. Whereas trade analyst bodies expect around Rs 7-8 trillion of loss incurred during first 21 days of lock down in India. Barclays Research has estimated a loss of $26 billion per week because of closed factories and offices. Revenues of Indian Railways are going to shrink by Rs 6500 crore in 43 days of lockdown. It’s a kind of economy terrorism which was imposed on the whole world by hiding and denying information by undemocratic communist regime and using WHO as a face value.

As per published reports in Metro, UK on April 16, 2020, three citizen journalists – Chen Qiushi, Fang Bin and Li Zehua who wanted to show the truth of Wuhan have gone untraceable since last 2 months. A gross human rights violation during outbreak and lock down have been reported including aggressive cyber policing and deleting reports, invasive online surveillances, kicking out foreign reporters, whistle-blowers casted as rumour mongers, suppressing the voices of frontline doctors and alleged cremation of living Covid-19 patients. These violations belong to the Article 5 and 8 of the UN declaration of human rights violation for subject to torture, cruelty and violating the fundamental rights granted by constitution.

The act of China and its role in spreading the pandemic should be investigated based on the revised adoption 2005, by International Health Regulations (IHR) of World Health Assembly. The purpose of IHR was ‘to prevent, protect against, control and provide a public health response to the international spread of disease in a way that are commensurate with the restricted to the public health risk’. In 2013, the DG of WHO, Margaret Chan stated while introducing the concepts such as ‘human security’ and ‘sovereignty as responsibility’, ‘The aim of IHR is not only to achieve the widest possible population coverage. It is also to ensure that there are no significant gaps at the national level, as these have the potential to threaten the health securities of all countries in the world’. AS UN secretary general Antonio Guterres spoke to the council after Security Council meet on 10th April 2020 ‘The pandemic also poses a significant threat to the maintenance of international peace and security-potentially leading to an increase in social unrest and violence’. China in toto, failed to adhere upon global standard benchmarks of human dignity and sovereignty.

Citing the impact of Covid-19 and its origin from Wuhan, a $20 trillion action lawsuit was filed in Texas Federal court, US by Freedom Watch and his mentor Larry Klayman along with Buzz Photos against the Chinese government, Chinese army, Wuhan Institute of Virology and its director, and Chinese army Major General Chen Wei. The lawsuit mentioned that Covid-19 virus was designed by China to kill mass populations. Biological weapons are outlawed in 1925 and SARS-CoV-2 should be considered as a terrorist-related biological weapon of mass destruction. As per Klayman’s claim, Chinese president, Xi Jinping in his internal speech to Politburo Standing Committee on Febraury 3, 2020, asserts how he gave an order on January 7, 2020, to prevent and control the coronavirus. Another lawsuit filed in the US district court for the Eastern District of Missouri by Eric Schmitt, a Missouri Attorney General against the Chinese government, Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and other responsible offices files for similar charges like permitting millions of people to be exposed to virus, destroying evidences, hoarding personal protective equipment and so on.

British think tank, Henry Jackson Society has published a report entitled, ‘Coronavirus compensation? Assessing China’s potential culpability and avenues of legal response’, which explores the possibilities of legal action as per the international criminal laws against China. One of the author of this report in a UK Talk Radio station described, ‘The mechanism to defend overselves and the kindred spirit that the IHR were supposed to install effectively were thrown away and this confirms, China’s culpability. He suggests action could be possible through the International Court of Justice, the Permanent Court of Arbitration, and bilateral investment treaties. Former British diplomat to China, also a co-author of the above report describe the whole events, ‘This is like war’. ‘There are somethings you can quantify but others, the full costs, deaths and diseases, loss of career, disruption of education, family breakups which has been unleashed on the world’ can’t be quantified. Apart from a demand of US $4 trillion as compensation, he added – ‘our opponents do not believe in the law. They just use it arbitrarily to control their people’.

Similar war reparation has been filed by The International Council of Jurist (ICJ) and All India Bar Association in United Nation Human Rights Councils seeking compensation from China against Covid-19. Under the ‘Responsibility of States for Internationally Wrongful Act, 2001 China should bear legal liability on committing ‘grave offences against the humanity’ as said by ICJ president Adish Aggarwala. A 32-year age Mumbai based lawyer too, has filed a petition in International Criminal Court, Netherland, suing the Chinese president and other office bearers for criminal negligence, suppression of information and ‘treason against humanity’.

Around two decades back in 2002, Chinese plaintiffs filed a case against Imperial Army of Japan, in Tokyo district court for spreading plagues, anthrax, cholera, typhoid and other communicable diseases in Quzhou, Ningbo and Changde city of China in between 1940-42. Although, the presiding judge found the imperial army had contravened the Geneva and Hague conventions but they rejected claims for compensation on the ground that all reparation issues had been settled by international peace treaties.

Who will tame the dragon?

While answering to an open letter written by the Chinese embassy in Berlin to Editor-in-chief of Bild (a largest circulated daily of Germany), Julian Reichelt mentioned that Xi Jinping wouldn’t be the president without ‘surveillance’ and they have left the world in dark about coronavirus. He questions why his laboratories are not as secure as his prisons for political prisoners. His reactions are in consonant with those of many other world leaders that have started murmuring about Chinese governance. There is a Chinese proverb ‘Zhĭ lĭ bāobuzhù huŏ’ that literally translates ‘You can’t conceal fire by wrapping it in paper’. We hope, sooner or later truth will be revealed and justice will be served to the humanity!

Hindu priests slam Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan for suggesting govt to borrow gold from temples, say take money from Congress leaders instead

Hindu priests on Thursday slammed the Former Chief Minister of Maharashtra and Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan for his suggestions to extract gold from the Religious trusts in the country to use in the war against Coronavirus. They said that money should be taken from the Congress party instead.

Reacting to Chavan’s comment, Swamy Paramhans Tapaswi Chhawni said, “Before taking gold from Hindu temples, money should be taken to combat Coronavirus from Congress leaders who have amassed huge wealth since independence.”

Mahant Kamal Nayan Das, Uttaradhikari, Mani Ram Das Chavni alleged that the Congress leaders are involved in anti-national activities. He also questioned former CM that why is he seeking to borrow money from Hindu sects only and not from Churches and Mosques.

Prithviraj Chavan tweeted seeking money from the temples

Prithviraj Chavan had taken to twitter suggesting that Central Government should immediately appropriate all the gold lying with all the religious trusts in the country. He stated that the gold is worth at least $1 trillion, according to the World Gold Council.

While stating that the country is going through an emergency, Chavan mentioned that the gold can be borrowed by the govt through Gold bonds at a low-interest rate.

Chavan affirmed that the gold reserve lying with the religious bodies is worth 1 trillion dollar that is 76 lakh crore rupees. He had further stated, “If it is borrowed from these trusts at a nominal interest rate, the money can be generously spent on the lower middle and poor class to increase their spending capacity.”

Reports suggest that the World Gold Council (WGC) has stated that the gold reserves in India which are lying with the religious sects are worth 1 trillion-dollar. Mentioning that Chavan also said that “there is a little scope for raising funds from open market.”

Congress leader CM Ibrahim writes to Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa urging to allow Muslims to gather for public prayer on Eid

Senior Karnataka Congress leader CM Ibrahim has written a letter to Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa in which he has urged him to allow Muslims to gather for mass prayers at Masjids and Idgah maidans in the state on the occasion of Eid. In a letter dated May 13, Ibrahim has asked Yediyurappa to allow prayer assemblies till 1 pm on the occasion of Eid-ul Fitr during the Coronavirus lockdown.

The letter requested the Chief Minister to consult with medical experts regarding his request before taking a call.

CM Ibrahim, a close associate of former Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah wrote in his letter: “On behalf of the entire community, I would suggest that the government may take a decision by having due consultation with the medical experts to grant permission for Muslims on the day of Eid to offer prayers in the Idgah Maidan or Masjids from morning till 1 pm with all precautionary measures and safety norms.” He requested the CM to take a suitable decision to enable Muslims in the state to offer Idd prayers at Idgah Maidans or Mosques in their respective localities.

Congress leader writes to Karnataka CM

The request by the Congress leader received flak from various quarters as it was largely seen as an attempt to appease the minority community, even if it took to jeopardise the lives of many others during turbulent times of a global pandemic. It may be noted that the guidelines issued by the union home ministry on the lockdown state that religious congregations are prohibited in all zones in the entire country.

Karnataka Govt banned conducting congregational prayers in mosques during Ramzan

Earlier last month, Karnataka government announced that it was banning the five-time Namaz in mosques, Dargahs, Imam Baras during the month of Ramzan in view of coronavirus pandemic in the state.

The state government also decided to cancel the government-funded Dawat-e-Sahri or Iftar, the state-organised community feast during the religious month, in view of the highly-contagious Covid-19 outbreak.

Saudi Arabia imposes curfew during the Eid

It may be noted that Saudi Arabia, where the holiest sites for Muslims are located, has announced a 24-hour curfew for five days of Eid holidays to contain the spread of Coronavirus. According to the directives given by King Salman Bin Abdul Aziz, the curfew would be imposed from May 23 to May 27, following the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. Muslim holy cities of Mecca and Medina are already under curfew, which was imposed on April 2. Saudi Arabia had earlier imposed 24-hour curfews on most towns and cities but eased them for the start of Ramadan. Eid al-Fitr for the year 2020 will be observed on sundown of Saturday, May 23rd ending at sundown on Sunday, May 24th.

Muslims emerge as the trouble-maker during country’s fight against coronavirus

After the Tablighi Jamaat event undermined India’s fight against Coronavirus, the criticism not only of the Tablighi Jamaat but the Muslim community, on the whole, has seen an unprecedented upswing. In addition to the nuisance created by the Tablighi Jamaat members, Muslim mobs across the country are turning out to be quite a headache for the authorities in the fight against coronavirus. There have been innumerable incidents where Muslims have not only been caught flouting lockdown and social distancing orders by gathering at mosques to offer Namaz but have also been found guilty of conducting concerted attacks against health workers and policemen who have been risking their lives to limit the spread of the Chinese epidemic.

Face-offs between the Indian troops and Chinese troops are not co-related with any other global or local activity: Army Chief

The Indian Army Chief Manoj Mukund Naravane has affirmed that the recent face-offs between India and China along the borders are not co-related and they don’t have any connection with any other global or local activity.

“It is reiterated that both these incidents are neither co-related nor do they have any connection with other global or local activities,” General MM Naravane mentioned in a press release.

Confirming the recent incidents along LAC, MM Naravane said, “There were two incidents at Eastern Ladakh and North Sikkim where aggressive behavior by both sides resulted in minor injuries to troops post which both sides disengaged after dialogue and interaction at the local level.”

He mentioned that such incidents are resolved mutually by both sides as per established protocols and the guidelines. The protocols established by Prime Minister after the Wuhan and Mamallaparam summits.

While mentioning the faceoffs General MM Naravane said, “Temporary and short duration faceoffs between the border guarding troops do occur along the LAC due to the differing perceptions of the alignment of boundaries which are not resolved.”

Development of infrastructure along the Northern border is on track

General Naravane further stated, “I can say with confidence that the development of infrastructure capabilities along our Northern borders is on track. Our force posture will not suffer due to the COVID pandemic.”

The Army Chief appreciated the Border Roads Organisation in creating and maintaining strategic roads and infrastructure in the border areas used by both civilians and the military.

He asserted, “Our BRO continues to work tirelessly even during COVID pandemic to connect far-flung areas so that our civil brethren living in those locations are connected and facilitate faster development to the region.”

India-China informal summit in Wuhan

In fact, The first India-China informal summit in Wuhan had ended on 28 April 2018 in which Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had mutually stressed on the importance of peace and tranquility in all areas of India-China border region.

As per the press release of the Ministry of External Affairs, India at the Wuhan summit strategic guideline was issued to the militaries of both nations to strengthen communication in order to build trust and mutual understanding and enhance predictability and effectiveness in the management of border affairs.

MEA further added, “The two leaders further directed their militaries to earnestly implement various confidence-building measures agreed upon between the two sides, including the principle of mutual and equal security, and strengthen existing institutional arrangements and information sharing mechanisms to prevent incidents in border regions.”

Chinese military choppers spotted near LAC

Chinese military choppers were found to be flying close to the Indian territory on Wednesday. Responding to aggressive posturing of the Chinese, the Indian Air Force (IAF) deployed its fighter planes on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) after Chinese military helicopters were seen flying close to the LAC.

Reportedly, the Chinese choppers did not cross the LAC into Indian territory in that particular area. The Indian Air Force frequently flies its Sukhoi 30MKI fighter aircraft fleet from Leh airbase in Ladakh along with other planes.

Troops clashed in Eastern sector

India and China were also involved in two face-offs in a span of a week in the Eastern Ladakh and near Naku La Pass in the Sikkim sector along the contentious border between the two countries.

In the first incident, the Chinese army personnel had clashed with Indian forces along the northern bank of the Pangong Lake in eastern Ladakh on May 5. The face-off ended the next morning following dialogue between the two sides. A number of soldiers on both sides had sustained minor injuries

‘Activist’ Rehana Fathima, who had tried to desecrate Sabarimala temple, sacked from her job at BSNL

Rehana Fathima, a controversial ultra-left wing activist who had tried to desecrate the holy shrine of Sabarimala by entering it along with her friends in 2018, has been sacked by state-run telecom firm BSNL.

According to the reports, Fathima was removed from her job after BSNL authorities after a probe found that her Facebook messages had incited communal tension and she had violated service rules.

Fathima posted a message today on her Facebook account informing that she has been ordered “mandatory retirement” from BSNL. She said that BSNL suspended her, stalled her promotion, and finally sacked her in fear of religious sentiments of some customers. She lamented that even the employee unions also refused to defend her. In her post, she also alleged some dealings to benefit Reliance Jio at the cost of BSNL, and asked if now she will be banished for Facebook also as Facebook has bought shares in Jio. She also indicated that she might contest the decision of BSNL in court.

Earlier, she was transferred to the Palarivattom telephone exchange in Kochi, where she was kept away from interacting with the public. The state-run BSNL had even initiated disciplinary procedures against Rehana Fathima and had carried out an internal enquiry after she had tried to desecrate the holy temple Sabarimala temple by entering it.

For the past 18 months, she was under suspension after BSNL had received complaints from the public about her abusive pictures and videos, which had hurt religious sentiments.

Convicted for cheque-fraud case

Rehana Fathima was also convicted in a cheque-fraud case and awarded a fine of Rs. 2.1 lakh and one day of imprisonment. In 2014, the activist had borrowed a sum of Rs 2 lakh from one Anil Kumar, a resident of Alappuzha, which was returned through a cheque. However, when he approached the bank with the cheque, it bounced as there was no money in the account.

Kumar had moved to the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Alappuzha in 2014 who handed her a day’s imprisonment and ordered her to pay the fine. She then filed an appeal against the verdict before the High Court. However, the High Court upheld the previous verdict as well.

Desecration of Sabarimala temple by Rehana Fathima

The controversial activist, Rehana Fathima had sparked a huge controversy after she had tried to enter the holy Sabarimala shrine and desecrate it following the controversial Supreme court judgement granting permission to women of all ages to enter the temple ignoring the shrines age-old tradition barring women of menstruating age to enter the holy place.

She had also created a controversy after she had called the age-old traditional ban on menstruating age as “unconstitutional”. In 2018, the Pathanamthitta police had registered a case against activist Rehana Fathima against a complaint filed by Sabarimala Achara Samrakshana Samithi for putting up social media posts that were “communally divisive” in nature.

The self-proclaimed activist was also expelled from the Muslim community by the Kerala Muslim Jama’ath Council for “hurting sentiments of lakhs of Hindu devotees”.

A model in the past Fathima has been a part of the ‘Kiss of Love’ campaign in Kochi in 2014 against the purported moral policing. She had also stirred a squabble after she posed topless in a photo with watermelons as a mark of protest against a Kozhikode-based college professor’s remark comparing women’s breasts to watermelons.

She has also acted in a film called “Eka” produced by her partner Manoj K Sreedhar. The film is focused on “intersexuality”. The film features nudity and several bold scenes with Fathima. The film’s poster goes, “I am intersex, I have a p**is and a v***na by birth, I want to live”.

As per Bengal police, Muslims in Telinipara attacked Hindus with swords, bombs, gas cylinders and burned their houses down because of a ‘taunt’

Chandannagar Police Commissioner Humayun Kabir, an IPS officer considered to be close to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was the first to attribute a “taunt” to the communal clash in Telinipara, Hooghly, West Bengal, where the houses of many Hindus were burned by a mob on late Sunday evening and again on early Tuesday afternoon.

According to a report by Swarajya, the IPS officer had told the media that some Hindus subjected a small group of Muslim men to ‘corona’ taunt. This had allegedly triggered the Muslims, who then went on to attack the Hindus with socket bombs, gas cylinders fitted with detonators, swords and other lethal weapons, iron rods and bricks.

It is pertinent to note here that Chandannagar Police Commissioner Humayun Kabir is the same officer who was removed as Murshidabad district police chief by the Election Commission before the 2014 Lok Sabha polls on charges of favouring the ruling Trinamool Congress.

The IPS officer had said that some Hindu men hurled the “taunt” after a few Muslims from the Urdi Bazar in Chandannagar had recently tested positive for coronavirus. And it was because of this “taunt”, according to the Bengal government, that the enraged Muslims went back to their locality and informed other fellow Muslims about the taunt. They, then, returned with lethal weapons and attacked the Hindus, but police intervened promptly and peace was restored, claimed the officer.

Even if one is to believe this narrative, this Telinipara incident gives us an insight into the prevailing situation in Bengal, where a mere “taunt” can lead Muslims to attack Hindus and vandalise and torch houses and properties belonging to them, highlights the Swarajya report.

The IPS officer, Humayun Kabir had reportedly further said that after taunting the group of Muslim men, Hindus blocked access to a public toilet that is used by Muslims. The latter objected and the verbal clash that ensued eventually snowballed into a communal clash.

BJP MP Locket Chatterjee condemned the Telinipara incident, criticises WB police and Govt

Hooghly Lok Sabha MP Locket Chatterjee and others had stated that after some Muslims who returned from a pilgrimage to Ajmer very recently, tested positive for coronavirus, locals of Chandannagar became alert and tried to restrict the entry of outsiders into their localities.

“Muslims were roaming around wantonly and Hindus got alarmed. The Hindus of Chandannagar felt the Muslims were deliberately roaming around all over the place to spread the deadly virus and ensure a lot of people got infected. So Hindus erected barricades to protect themselves. Muslims broke through the barricades and attacked Hindus on late Sunday evening for erecting the barricades,” said Chatterjee.

The BJP MP furthered that West Bengal police’s inaction and callousness on Sunday had encouraged the Muslims in the area who again attacked the Hindus on Tuesday in a more ferocious manner. Chatterjee said Tuesday’s attack was premeditated and well-planned where the Muslims used socket bombs, gas cylinders fitted with detonators to attack the Hindus.

Police Commissioner Kabir said on Wednesday that a huge quantity of explosives has been seized. “Our bomb squads are there. As of now, we have recovered petrol bombs and socket bombs. They have also used cylinders as explosives.”

“The recovery of explosives points to the fact that one particular community stockpiles weapons and explosives. Why is that so? This is a grave failure on the part of the police. How can explosives be stockpiled under the nose of the police, and that too during the ongoing lockdown” asked BJP national secretary Rahul Sinha.

Internet ban by WB Govt after Telinipara incident

“The state government imposed an Internet ban only in order to ensure that the truth does not come out. People all over the country got to know about the horrifying attacks on Hindus on Tuesday and how properties belonging to Hindus were attacked and set ablaze. The state government wants to prevent a repeat of that. We do not know what is happening at Telinipara and Chandannagar,” said Lok Sabha MP Chatterjee, alleging that police and WB government were trying to conceal the truth and give out a false version of the unfortunate happenings at Chandannagar.

She further alleged that WB police were instead arresting the Hindus who had erected barricades to prevent the entry of outsiders into their localities. “The indiscriminate and one-sided arrests have spread fear and led people to believe that the police are biased. This bias, they apprehend, will embolden Sunday night’s and Tuesday afternoon’s attackers to launch another wave of attacks,” the MP said.

The gagging of the local media by the Hooghly district administration has also raised doubts about the state’s intentions. The gag order issued by the district magistrate also includes visuals of violence and statements about it by politicians.

“This is a blatant attempt to browbeat the local media and stop it from presenting the truth,” said Lok Sabha MP Chatterjee.

Tuesday’s violence

On Tuesday, there were fresh cases of violence, the videos of which have now gone viral on social media. It is alleged that the Hindu homes were set on fire and bombs were hurled by a Muslim mob. Hooghly MP Locket Chatterjee has alleged that the attacks were preplanned and the police stood as a mute spectator. Chatterjee further alleged that lethal weapons were transported in ambulances and women and children were also attacked.

West Bengal govt focuses on ‘misinformation’

As Bengal burned, the Home Department of the West Bengal government claimed that Telinipara is peaceful and warned of ‘strict action’ against those who were trying to ‘disturb the peace’. As per reports, 56 persons have been arrested and police raids are on to nab the culprits. Section 144 of the CrPC has been imposed to maintain law and order and mobile internet services are suspended.

Political uncertainty in Maharashtra ends as CM Uddhav Thackeray elected unopposed to the Legislative Council

After an intense political drama for over a month, Maharashtra Chief Minister and Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray crossed a major hurdle by getting elected to Maharashtra Legislative Council unopposed.

According to the reports, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday made his debut as a legislator, even though indirectly, after he and eight others were declared elected unopposed to the state Legislative Council.

Apart from Thackeray, Council Deputy Chairperson and Shiv Sena leader Neelam Gorhe, four candidates of BJP – Ranjitsinh Mohite Patil, Gopichand Padalkar, Praveen Datke and Ramesh Karad, NCP’s Shashikant Shinde and Amol Mitkari, Rajesh Rathod of the Congress were lected for the nine seats, which fell vacant on April 24.

All the nine candidates elected unopposed

“All of them were elected unopposed. The result was officially announced on Thursday after the deadline for withdrawal of nominations ended at 3 pm,” the official said.

On Tuesday, four candidates – BJP’s Sandeep Lele and Ajit Gopchade and NCP’s Kiran Pawaskar and Shivajirao Garje had withdrawn their nominations. Another independent candidate Shehbaz Rathod’s nomination was found invalid during scrutiny.

Thackeray, who was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra on November 28 last year, had to become a member of either Houses of the state legislature by May 27, as he had not contested the assembly election. Initially, he tried to get himself nominated to the Maharashtra legislative assembly. However, he had faced some criticism on social media for running away from direct elections. it was also pointed out that there is no history of a nominated member becoming chief minister, and it would set a bad precedent.

Later, Uddhav Thackeray had approached Prime Minister Narendra Modi pleading him to intervene to avoid the constitutional crisis in the state.

Uddhav Thackeray had to choose the Legislative Council route to remain as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra as byelections to the assembly could not be held due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
