Pakistanis shame cricketer Danish Kaneria on social media, ask him to leave the country for speaking against forced conversions in Pakistan

On Monday (May 9), former Pakistani spinner Danish Kaneria shared how he was forced to remain silent on the plight of forced conversion in Pakistan. He had also accused ex-Pakistani captain Shahid Afridi of forcibly trying to convert him to Islam. However, his revelations have not gone down well with ordinary Pakistanis who refuse to acknowledge this problem.

In a tweet, Danish Kaneria said, “When I raised my voice against forced conversion, I was threatened that my career would be destroyed.” Within minutes, Pakistanis descended on his Twitter timeline and accused him of lying and defaming Pakistan.

They also asked him to leave the country and settle in India instead. “Bro, I don’t (think) Shahid bhai has forced you to convert. He might have told you about Islam but didn’t force you as Islam doesn’t allow forceful conversion,” wrote one Ahmad Raza.

He further claimed, “Instead of highlighting the privileges being given to Hindu and Other Non-Mulsim communities, you are making false comments.”

Allegations made by Danish Kaneria against Shahid Afridi

On April 29 this year, Danish Kaneria accused his former team-mate Shahid Afridi of ill-treatment for being a Hindu. He had called Afridi a characterless forger and a liar.

While speaking to IANS, Kaneria remarked, “Shahid Afridi always let me down. He used to keep me on the bench and not let me play One Day International matches. He didn’t want me to be on the team.”

He further said that Shahid Afridi is a characterless and false person. He also told the news agency that Shahid Afridi was jealous of his good performances and provoked other players against him. Kaneria said that ignoring all these things, he used to focus only on cricket.

Later in another interview with Zee News on May 4, Danish Kaneria said, “Yes, Afridi used to often tell me to convert to Islam. But, I never used to take him seriously. I believe in my religion and it does not depend on cricket.

While speaking to The News International on May 6, Shahid Afridi cried foul and accused Kaneria of not being a ‘man of character.’

“Kaneria was like my younger brother and I played with him for many years. If my attitude was bad then why he did not complain to the Pakistan Cricket Board or the department he was playing for,” Afridi argued.

Accusing Danish Kaneria of giving interviews to ‘enemy nation’ India, Afridi said, “He is accusing me in order to get cheap fame and make money. He is giving interviews to our enemy country which can incite religious sentiments. Everyone knows about his character.”

Following Afridi’s allegations, Kaneria slammed Afridi for calling India an ‘enemy country’. “India is not our enemy. Our enemies are those who instigate people in the name of religion. If you consider India as your enemy, then don’t ever go to any Indian media channel,” Danish Kaneria tweeted.

Danish Kaneria is the highest wicket-taking spinner for Pakistan in Test cricket, and 4th on the overall list behind Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Imran Khan.

Another case of Taharrush? 13 teenage boys arrested in Egypt after video of mass harassment of female tourists goes viral

Egyptian authorities have arrested 13 teenage boys between the age of 13 and 15 after a video of mass harassment of foreign female tourists at Giza pyramids went viral. The incident happened on the 3rd day of Eid-al-Fitr at the famous pyramids near Cairo.

As seen in the viral video, a number of teenagers harassed 2 female tourists while they were trying to get away from the mob. Reminiscent of the sickening and terrifying Arab rape ‘game’ Taharrush, the mob of boys surrounded the girls and continued to follow them even when they were trying to get away. The person shooting the video said, “We want this video to be conveyed to the Minister of Tourism. This place is on the pyramid plateau on Eid al-Fitr. Countries harass foreigners.”

The video was shared on Facebook and then quickly went viral in the country. The video clip shows the pursuit and harassment of foreign tourists by a number of people in the area of the pyramids and the Sphinx.

While the tourists did not file any complaints after escaping from there, the security agencies moved on their own to track down the offenders after the video went viral in Egypt. Expecting such an incident, the agencies had issued strict instructions before the Eid al-Fitr holidays in the presence of all archaeologists to prevent any such harassment of visitors, whether Egyptians or foreigners.

What is Taharrush

The term Taharrush came to wider media attention during the Egyptian revolution when it was widely employed to attack female protesters. The ‘game‘ Taharrush is about large groups of Arab men surrounding their victims and then subjecting them to sexual assault. The attackers encircle the women, and while the inner circle assaults the women, the outer circle keeps anyone from intervening.

Apart from Egypt, this method of sexually assaulting females was observed in several German cities during the 2016 New Year’s celebrations, most notably in Cologne. German police in their report mentioned that the assault was similar to the Arab game Taharrush.

Complaints about a similar method of assault were filed in several European cities as Europe struggled to cope with this ‘cultural shock’ after a huge number of refugees from the Middle East in recent years. Neighboring Pakistan has also seen similar cases where women were assaulted by a large group after surrounding them in public.

Violent clashes erupt as Sri Lanka plunges into crisis after PM Mahinda Rajapaksa resigns amid economic crisis

Violence has erupted in parts of Sri Lanka after Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned amid economic crisis. Soon, his supporters and those who were protesting against him broke into violent clashes in Colombo. As of now at least 78 people have been injured in the violence. There have been increasing protests over increase in prices and power cuts since past few weeks.

As per reports, Rajapaksa sent his resignation to his younger brother President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. While the government has appealed to its citizens to help in the crisis, many Sri Lankans also want the President to resign.

Protestors have been sitting outside President Rajapaksa’s house since April this year which were attacked by Rajapaksa’s supporters. Police fired tear gas and water cannon on pro-government supporters who breached barricades to attack the protestors.

Mahinda Rajapaksa has appealed to public to exercise restraint and not take to violence. On Friday, a state of emergency was imposed in Sri Lanka which gave tremendous power to the military to arrest and detain anyone. The Defence Ministry on Sunday alleged that the anti-government protestors were behaving in threatening manner and disrupting essential services.

Sri Lanka crisis

Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis since its independence from Britain in 1948 with inflation reaching record high of 17.5% in February 2022. The residents of the island nation are struggling with an acute shortage of food, and cooking gas. Power cuts are frequent and people are seen standing in long queues in the National Capital for buying diesel fuel.

The government, headed by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, has been seeking credit lines from countries such as India, China and even Bangladesh for purchasing milk powder and diesel. The situation is so grim that the central bank is forced to buy oil from Iran by bartering tea leaves.

Crisis worsened after the coronavirus pandemic when the country started struggling after tourism, the prime industry, was badly hit on the island nation. Since government did not have enough foreign reserves, import of many goods was banned. This led to long power cuts and blackouts. In April, Sri Lankan government announced it was defaulting on USD 51 billion of foreign debt.

Chowrasiya, who was Cossipore BJYM Mandal Vice-President, had planned the celebrations to welcome Home Minister Amit Shah in Kolkata and was supposed to lead his Mandal team in a bike rally on May 6.

Following her son’s death, an inconsolable Laxmi alleged that he was murdered because he was a BJP member. The BJP had also blamed the ruling TMC party for the death of Arjun Chowrasiya.

Following the death, all the celebrations for Amit Shah’s welcome in Kolkata were cancelled. Union Home Minister Amit Shah had also visited Chowrasiya’s residence on May 6.

‘Targeted Divyang children, weaker sections to spread Islamic agenda’: Court notes serious charges against Umar Gautam for running mass conversion racket

On May 9, Monday, a Lucknow court rejected the bail plea of Mohammed Umar Gautam, arrested in connection with a mass conversion racket busted by the Uttar Pradesh ATS in June last year.

According to Law Beat, Shivani Jaiswal, a special NIA/ATS judge, refused to grant relief to Umar Gautam, citing the serious nature of the charges against him and the fact that he is the key accused in the First Information Report (FIR).

The court also stated that Umar Gautam is accused of participating in a criminal conspiracy with the syndicate by identifying the vulnerable sections of society, including children, women, and individuals, and instilling hatred in their minds towards their religion and faith.

Mohammed Umar Gautam claimed in his bail application that he had been wrongly accused of the crime and that the ATS lacked valid evidence against him. He had contended that the religious conversions he had facilitated were his right, which the Constitution had granted him as part of his fundamental rights.

He further asserted that all religious conversions were performed only after due legal processes were completed and that no family member of a speech or hearing impaired converted individual has complained that any conversion was performed unlawfully or forcibly, as is being claimed.

Meanwhile, the ATS had vehemently opposed Umar’s bail application, claiming that he is the kingpin of this syndicate, which runs an organization called Islamic Dawah Center in Jamia Nagar, New Delhi, and that, according to documents received, he has converted approximately 1,000 non-Muslims from Uttar Pradesh and other states to Islam.

The ATS further submitted before the court that Umar Gautam’s organization receives foreign funds that are utilized to change the country’s demographics by converting a large number of people and promoting mutual animosity and hatred among different sections.

ATS contended that as a result of these unlawful activities, the state’s law and order situation is deteriorating, and the country’s unity, sovereignty, and security are jeopardized. ATS further told the court that evidence of unlawful conversions of 115 people in Uttar Pradesh has already been gathered.

Based on the arguments presented by both parties, the Lucknow court rejected the bail plea of Mohammed Umar Gautam.

In June 2021, the Uttar Pradesh ATS arrested two men identified as Mohammed Umar Gautam and Mufti Qazi Jehangir involved in illegal religious conversions. According to police, women, and physically challenged children were their targets. The duo was arrested in the Jamia Nagar area in Delhi.

Ever since the duo has been arrested for operating a mass conversion racket in Uttar Pradesh, shocking details have emerged with regards to the modus operandi employed by the two to target non-Muslims and bring them into the fold of Islam.

The two accused, who ran an organization named Islamic Dawah Centre(IDC), along with their other associates, were charged for mass conversion of people into Islam through allurements such as marriage, jobs and money, and mental pressure.

Mohammad Umar Gautam received funds from Pakistan’s ISI and India’s most wanted terrorist Hafiz Saeed

The Islamic Dawah Centre(IDC) received heavy funding from the Middle East countries for their operations of carrying out religious conversions in India. Not just from the Muslim countries in the Gulf, but the duo also allegedly received funding from Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence(ISI), the police have stated. It was also reported then that sources within the Uttar Pradesh police had confirmed that they suspect the conversion racket run by Mufti Qazi Jahangir Qasmi and Mohammad Umar Gautam had funding from India’s most wanted terrorist and Jamaat-ud-Dawah chief Hafiz Saeed.

Umar Gautam and Jahangir converted over 1000 people to Islam: Police

The Anti Terror Squad (ATS) said Umar Gautam had allegedly converted over 1,000 people to Islam and got many of them married to Muslims to prevent the possibility of their relapse to their earlier faith.

Umar Gautam who is a convert himself had also revealed that they converted around 250-300 people every year. During the interrogation, Umar also informed that they targeted people from the economically weaker section of the society including women, children, and the disabled. They were also getting the women married so that they do not return to their original faith.

‘Education minister used to sit with us to protest, now refusing to meet us’: PTI aspirants in Punjab get lathi-charged by police for demanding jobs

On May 8, a protesting group of Physical Training Instructor job aspirants who are yet to be employed got into a scuffle with the Punjab Police outside the residence of Education Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer in Barnala, Punjab. The Police used lathi-charge to disperse the protesters.

The aspirants were holding a protest against the state government, demanding the recruitment of around 2,000 PTIs. The posts were announced by the previous Congress government in December 2021. Notably, Hayer used to sit on protests with these teachers before getting elected in the Punjab State Assembly Elections.

The scuffle between the protesters and the Punjab Police started when the protesters attempted to break the barricades that were placed in front of the minister’s house. The PTIs tried to gherao the minister’s house, but Punjab Police stopped them. Some of the protesters were detained by the Police, but they were released later.

Amandeep Kamboj, President of the New Unemployed PTI Teachers’ Union, said in a statement, “The Congress government in December 2021 advertised 2,000 posts of PTI teachers and 5,994 of ETT teachers, but the recruitment didn’t start. But now, the AAP government has started the recruitment process for ETT teachers. The government should also start hiring 2,000 PTIs.”

PTI Teachers’ Union Punjab’s district President Baljinder Singh Fatehpur said, “Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer used to join our protests before becoming a minister. He would sit with us on water tanks during protests. He had promised us that our demands would be fulfilled once his party formed government in the state. Now he is not giving us time, and he has changed his number as well.”

General Secretary of the Union Parminder Ghuman alleged that the Punjab Police brutally assaulted them. “They removed ‘chunni’ of the female teachers. Pagdi of the male teachers was removed by the Police. Several female teachers fell unconscious. Many teachers were arrested by the Police. We are not going to tolerate such action. Wherever Heyar would go, we will follow him.”

Women teachers fell unconscious

Hindi Daily Amar Ujala reported that during the scuffle, several female teachers fell unconscious. Their colleagues helped them and helped them get to safety.

Danish Kaneria Vs Shahid Afridi: After ‘conversion attempts’ row, ex-Pakistani captain accuses Hindu teammate of speaking to ‘enemy country’ India

Days after former Pakistani captain Shahid Afridi accused Pakistani ex-spinner Danish Kaneria of speaking to the media of ‘enemy country’ (India), the latter advised Afridi to not speak to any Indian channel ever.

It must be mentioned that Kaneria had earlier accused Afridi of coaxing him to convert and accept Islam. “India is not our enemy. Our enemies are those who instigate people in the name of religion. If you consider India as your enemy, then don’t ever go to any Indian media channel,” the ace spinner tweeted on Monday (May 9).

Danish Kaneria further revealed that he was forced to remain silent on the plight of forced conversion in Pakistan. “When I raised my voice against forced conversion, I was threatened that my career would be destroyed,” he wrote.

Danish Kaneria said Shoaib Akhtar was the first person to speak publicly about his problems. Akhtar had openly said how Kaneria was badly treated in the team for being a Hindu. Danesh Kaneria said that later several officials put pressure on Akhtar, after which Akhtar stopped talking about it.

The Background of the controversy

Later in another interview with Zee News on May 4, Danish Kaneria informed, “Yes, Afridi used to often tell me to convert to Islam. But, I never used to take him seriously. I believe in my religion and it does not depend on cricket.”

While speaking to The News International on May 6, Shahid Afridi cried foul and accused Kaneria of not being a ‘man of character.’

“Kaneria was like my younger brother and I played with him in the department for many years…If my attitude was bad then why he did not complain to the Pakistan Cricket Board or the department he was playing for,” he alleged.

Accusing Danish Kaneria of giving interviews to ‘enemy nation’ India, Afridi said, “He is accusing me in order to get cheap fame and make money. He is giving interviews to our enemy country which can incite religious sentiments. Everyone knows about his character.”

The ace spinner has now slammed Afridi for calling India an ‘enemy country’.

Anti-Hindu stance, and anti-India remarks of Shahid Afridi

In December 2019, Afridi had courted controversy after a clip of his old interview went viral on social media. He revealed that he had smashed his television set when he saw one of his children, enacting an ‘aarti’ scene while watching an Indian drama serial.

The former Pakistani captain was seen recently endorsing the Taliban. “Taliban have come with a very positive mind. They’re allowing ladies to work,” Afridi told the media. The former captain of the Pakistan national cricket team also asserted that the Talibs were fun, cricket-loving chaps. “I believe Taliban like cricket a lot,” he added.

During his visit to Pakistan Occupied Kashmir in 2020, Shahid Afridi had made belligerent comments against India that raised several eyebrows. In the aftermath, Indian cricketers Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh, who posted videos to support his NGO had to come forward and apologize for supporting Afridi.

Afridi had also claimed that Indian players would seek forgiveness after being ‘badly defeated’ by the Pakistani team.

Khalistani terror outfit SFJ says Khalistan flags placed on Himachal Pradesh Assembly gates were sent through its activists, booked under UAPA

In a video statement released on May 8, the banned Khalistani terror outfit Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) chief and designated terrorist, Gurpatwant Singh Pannu claimed that the Khalistan flags that were found tied to the main gate and boundary wall of the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly in Dharamshala were sent by them. He claimed that the flags were sent to the state via his activists who went to Mandi with Bhagwant Mann to participate in an Arvind Kejriwal Jansabha on May 6.

It may be recalled that on Sunday, May 9, the Himachal police probing the case had named Pannu as the prime accused in the case and booked him under the stringent UAPA.

In the video release, the US-based terrorist group’s chief was also heard reiterating the terror outfit’s propaganda about a so-called referendum for the secession of Punjab from India as Khalistan. Today, Sikhs raised 5 Khalistan flags in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly. These flags were sent by Sikhs during AAP’s Jansabha in Mandi. They were raised today in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly. This is about the independence of Punjab,” said Pannu.

“Since Kejriwal-Mann lured pro-Khalistan Sikhs into donating over $6 million to AAP during the Punjab election, SFJ will use activists who are close to CM Bhagwant Mann to promote the Khalistan Referendum,” SFJ general counsel Gurpatwant Singh Pannun added in the video.

“Khalistan flags at Dharamshala is a clear message to CM Jai Ram Thakur that Himachal Pradesh will be reclaimed through Khalistan Referendum and once again will be part of Punjab,” Pannun said.

It may be recalled that a day after Aam Aadmi Party’s massive victory in Punjab assembly elections in March this year, the pro-Khalistan secessionist group “Sikhs For Justice” (SFJ) has sent a letter to Chief Minister-designate Bhagwant Mann saying that AAP clearly won the elections by deceptively bagging the votes of pro- Khalistan Sikhs in Punjab who support SFJ’s secessionist referendum for the independence of Punjab from India.

In a letter released by the SFJ, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the chief of the anti-India outfit, made a sensational allegation that the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP treacherously used Khalistan votes and funds to win Punjab.

Khalistan flags placed on Himachal Pradesh Assembly gates, police books SJF chief under UAPA

On Sunday morning, Khalistan flags were found tied to the main gate and boundary wall of the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly in Dharamshala. Moreover, ‘Khalistan’ was inscribed in green on the outermost wall of the Assembly.

Following the incident, Chief Minister Jairam Thakur asked the state police to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the provocative incident. The SIT, in turn, filed a first information report (FIR) was filed against Pannun under Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for inciting or abetting terror acts and Indian Penal Code Sections 153A and 153B for promoting disharmony or enmity between different groups on the basis of religion.

He was additionally charged by the state police under Section 3 of the Himachal Pradesh Open Places (Prevention of Disfigurement) Act, 1985.

The FIR was filed against Pannun in response to a complaint filed by Ram Chand, a resident of Kaned village in Dharamshala’s Kangra district, informed Himachal Pradesh Director General of Police Sanjay Kundu, adding that, “Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the general counsel to Sikhs for Justice, has been made the main accused in the case.”

Kundu further stated that a seven-person Special Investigation Team has been created to investigate the case.

Supreme Court rejects Communist party’s petition against Shaheen Bagh demolition drive, asks them to approach High Court

The Supreme Court has refused to hear the plea filed by the Communist Party against the MCD’s demolition drive against illegal encroachments in Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh area. As per reports, the apex court rejected the CPM’s plea, stating that none of the affected parties has been a part of the petition and it is purely political in nature.

As per reports, the SC rejected the CPM plea and stated that the apex court cannot respond to any or every petition, especially one that is filed by a political party. Advocate Surendra Nath, appearing for CPM had pleaded with the SC to hear the petition and grant a 2-day stay against the demolition. However, Justice L Nageswara Rao, after observing that none of the affected parties is a part of the petition, rapped up the petitioner.

“We cannot give a pass to people to approach Supreme Court every time there is something, that too at the behest of a political party. The High Court can definitely take this up, you have been in the verandas of the Supreme Court, you should have gone to the High Court. What do you choose, either you withdraw or we’ll dismiss it”, Justice J Rao stated.

Image via LawBeat

As reported by LawBeat, SG Tushar Mehta stated before the SC that certain parties and groups are trying to portray the demolition drive as a targeted action against a particular community. However, that is not the case. He added that he has a list of people whose illegal structures have been removed.

In the end, adding that the CPM’s attempt to directly involve the Supreme Court was ‘too much’, the apex court asked the petitioner to approach the High Court on the matter.

It is notable here that there is a massive political drama underway at Shaheen Bagh nearby areas where the MCD is trying to carry out a demolition drive against illegal structures. AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan and Majid Khan are in the area, telling people to oppose the drive. A large group of people were seen standing in the way of the bulldozers. Delhi Police is providing protection to MCD officials and the vehicles.
