Arnab Goswami has announced that he and his wife Samyabrata Ray will be making public all their financial details since they moved to Mumbai in 2004. Almost 70 representatives from G7 nations pen letter to their leaders, urge them to take ‘allied action’ against China: Details

Almost 70 legislators from the seven G7 nations have penned a letter to the leaders of their countries urging them to “unite around a plan of action that addresses China’s internal & external behaviour” which they believe is “contradictory to international standards.” The G7 countries include Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. The letter was released by Norbert Röttgen, member of the German Parliament.

The legislators in their statement said, “Because the actions of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) are affecting global politics and our societies like never before, the G7 must stand up for the democratic principles we share and believe in. Representing the interests of our electorates, we urgently call our leaders to unite around a plan of action that addresses internal and external PRC behavior which we consider contradictory to international standards.”

The legislators called for the G7 alliance to act together as an alliance in order to “uphold the international order” while ensuring that China ‘plays by the rules’. The statement highlighted 5 areas of concern where the leaders called for “allied action”. The five areas include international institutional reform, technological standards, human rights, tensions in the Indo-pacific regions and co-operation on Covid-19.

The legislators accused China of taking advantage of ‘weakened international governance’. “The consequences of such behavior can be severe, as lately seen at the World Health Organization. Its international response to Covid-19 was severely undermined due to PRC interference and violation of its rules,” the letter said. They further said that China has still not fulfilled its obligations after joining the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The legislators also cautioned, “The Free World must avoid becoming dependent on a country that rejects market principles and democratic values.” It also expressed concern that China has taken the lead in revolutionary technologies such as quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and 5G deployment. The letter also highlighted the ethnic cleaning of Uyghurs in China.

“We call on G7 leaders to hold the PRC and its leaders accountable for its blatant violation of an international treaty through the implementation of the draconian national security law in Hong Kong. PRC expansionism in the region and around the world must entail consequences. Similar aggression with respect to Taiwan and contested territories in the Himalayas and the South China Sea must be deterred,” the letter stated.

The legislators also said that it is up to China to determine whether “Covid-19 is a case of cooperation or conflict.” “Early signs show that the PRC held back important information in the initial stages of the pandemic and undermined the WHO. In doing so, it denied the rest of the world critical time to respond to the virus. To prepare and prevent future outbreaks, we believe that an independent investigation into the origins and spread of the virus is necessary,” it stated.

The letter was signed by 67 representatives from the G7 countries and was addressed to US President Joe Biden, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Macron, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

After Republic Day, farmer protesters plan to disrupt the Budget session: Details

After police granted permission to the ‘farmers’ to carry out a tractor rally at Delhi on Republic Day, the protesting ‘farmer’ unions have announced that they would march on foot to Parliament on February 1, the day when Union Budget will be presented.

“On 1 February, we will march on foot towards Parliament in Delhi from different locations,” said Darshan Pal of Krantikari Kisan Union on Monday.

The announcement came a day before the proposed tractor march by ‘farmers’ on Republic Day in the national capital. The farmers would reportedly take out a massive rally after the Republic Day parade tomorrow. The number of tractors participating in the rally has not been declared yet.

Delhi Police on Sunday granted the permission to carry out a march in Delhi on Republic Day, with adequate security arrangements in place. Three routes were finalised following a week of meetings between farmers and senior police officers.

In his press conference, Special CP (Intelligence) Dependra Pathak said, “We held discussions with Bharatiya Kisan Union leaders and there’s an agreement that they will carry out their march after Republic Day celebrations at Rajpath. There should be no disturbance during the parade. We will provide them with adequate security; their march will be peaceful and they will return to the border at the end.”

However, the routes have become another bone of contention between the farmers’ unions and the Delhi Police. The farmer unions claim that the permitted routes were not the same as decided by them earlier.

Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister Narendra Tomar Singh said the Union Government’s offer of suspending the Farm Bills for 1.5 years was the “best offer” and hoped that the protesting farmer unions will soon reconsider it and convey their decision.

The government of India has decided to honour Col Bikkumalla Santosh Babu of the 16th Bihar Batallion, who had laid down his life in the clash between Indian and Chinese forces in Galwan Valley on June 16, with the Maha Vir Chakra this Republic Day. “Col Babu is likely to be awarded the Maha Vir Chakra posthumously on this Republic Day,” government sources told ANI.

According to reports, the government’s decision came after the Indian Army top brass recommended that soldiers who took on Chinese troops in the Galwan valley clash should be awarded the war-time chakra series awards at this Republic Day.

Maha Vir Chakra is the second-highest Indian military award, instituted to honour the acts of conspicuous gallantry in the presence of the enemy whether on land, at sea or in the air. Param Vir Chakra is the highest military decoration, followed by Maha Vir Chakra and then the Vir Chakra. 

When Indian and Chinese troops had clashed in the Galwan Valley area in the Ladakh region near the Line of Actual Control, Indian security forces, including 16 Bihar Regiment, were asked to ensure that the Chinese post was removed by them. Commander Officer of the 16 Bihar Infantry Battalion controlling the area Colonel B Santosh Babu had visited the site with a team of 35 men.

During a heated exchange of words between the two troops, the Chinese started attacking Indians. It was during this bout of stone pelting that one of the stones hit that took lives of Colonel Babu and Havildar Pilani of 16 Bihar Regiment. ANI report suggests that after the CO was martyred, the Indian side lost their cool and attacked the Chinese ferociously despite being heavily outnumbered.

Earlier, politicians from opposition parties and liberal ‘journalists’ had mocked President Kovind after claiming that the portrait of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose he had inaugurated was actually that of Prosenjit Chatterjee who had played the character in a movie on the stalwart.

President Kovind soon became the focal point of a targeted attack with the likes of Barkha Dutt, Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra and Rohini Singh jumping into the scene in their effort to embarrass the President of India.

However, it was more than evident that the portrait, the work of Padma Shree awardee Paresh Maity, was based on the photograph of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. It was confirmed by the fact that the legendary freedom fighter’s grand-nephew had shared the same photograph in January 2020.

Now, with Prosenjit Chatterjee himself commenting on the matter, it is a cause for further embarrassment for all those who took the opportunity to generate a targeted campaign against President Kovind.

At an event held in Mumbai in support of the ongoing farmers’ protests, Samajwadi Party Maharashtra chief Abu Azmi spewed venom against PM Modi and instigated the demonstrators to take up arms until their demands are not met. Azmi made an incendiary speech in presence of NCP chief Sharad Pawar, who also attended the protest in solidarity with the protesters.

“The wave that has started from Punjab will burn PM Modi to ashes and no trace of him will be left. Every single person should come out of their home and create mayhem until the farm laws are rescinded,” Azmi said.

The NCP supremo Sharad Pawar nonchalantly watched over as Abu Azmi spewed venom against PM Modi and instigated protestors. The Samajwadi Party Maharashtra chief also made deprecating remarks against freedom fighter Veer Savarkar. Maharashtra Congress President Balasaheb Thorat was also present at the protest.

Though initial reports claimed that Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray was going to attend the demonstrations, according to sources quoted by News 18, Thackeray is not going to participate in the event. However, the CM has sent a message to the protesters, expressing his support. Shiv Sena, meanwhile, will send a representative to the venue.

Azmi was speaking at a protest at Azad Maidan in Mumbai where thousands of ‘farmers’ have been reportedly camping in support of the farmers’ protests. They will then march to Raj Bhavan to register their protest against the farm’s laws. The march is part of the agitation being undertaken under the banner of Samyukt Shetkari Kamgar Morcha (SSKM) and aims to escalate the farmers’ struggle in the main capital cities across all states.

As multiple rounds of talks between the Centre and the protesting farmers’ unions fell apart, the protesters recently propped up a masked man to allege that he was an agent provocateur, sent to assassinate prominent leaders. Later, the man, identified as Yogesh Singh, confessed that he was coerced by farmer leaders into lying and implicating Haryana Police.

A similar claim was made by a faculty member at Ashoka University, named Neelanjan Sircar. Unlike others who weaponised the fake news to take potshots at the Modi government, Sircar instead mocked Lord Ram under the pretext of criticising the BJP. Sircar, who works as an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the university, in a now deleted tweet wrote, “Totally amazing! This isn’t Netaji Subash Chandra Bose, it’s a picture of famous Bengali actor Prosenjit Chatterjee playing Netaji in a movie. “

While his tweet, until this part reeked only of falsehood, he then decided to take a jibe on Hindu beliefs. “And this after yelling ‘Jai Shri Ram’ at a Netaji event. The bankruptcy of political appropriation of independence-era leaders,” the faculty member of Ashoka University added.
