News channel Calcutta News removed from cable networks in Kolkata allegedly on orders of Mamata Banerjee govt, BJP terms it ‘undeclared emergency’

In yet another incident of attack on dissenting voice by West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, the West Bengal govt stopped the broadcast of a News Channel on cable networks for questioning the govt. As per reports, the broadcast of the channel Calcutta News was stopped on various cable networks in Kolkata and surrounding areas.

BJP MP Swapan Dasgupta said that Calcutta News has been ‘mildly critical’ of the Mamata Banerjee government, and that was enough for the govt to remove it from cable networks. He said that cable networks in Kolkata pulled the plug on Calcutta News under sustained administrative pressure. “This sustained attack on news & opinions that are not to TMC’s liking is a feature of this state government that sustains itself on crude propaganda & sycophancy,” Dasgupta said.

Images shared by social media users show that the channel was not showing up on various cable networks like Siti Cable, DEN, WishNet, DDCTN, CCTN etc.

West Bengal BJP termed it as an undeclared emergency in Bengal. They said that after gag order on mainstream media and arrests of Social Media activists, now the channel has been banned as it it has been taken off air by all MSOs.

The channel confirmed that it has come under the attack of state government. They updated the banner image in their social media accounts to inform that their channel was off the air from some areas not due to some technical issue, but due to attack from the state government.

The Calcutta News is one of the few media houses in West Bengal which is questioning the state government over the handling of the Coronavirus crisis. There have been allegations of the state government under-reporting the Coronavirus infection and death numbers in the case, severe mismanagement of hospitals and other such issues, which were being exposed by the channel.

While the channel has been taken down from cable networks, it is still available on DTH platforms. Moreover, the channel’s live feed is also available online on Youtube.

With an uncalled for jibe at Goa, Kerala’s Communist Minister has shamed India

There is a lot that needs to be said here. About attitudes of Indian Communists, about relationships between Indian states, about BJP and its opponents and so on.

First, the factual errors, which Goa CM pointed out in his tweet thread:

(1) There is no case of anyone from Goa going to Kerala for treatment and dying of Corona.

(2) Goa has enough hospitals.

(3) Goa is a full fledged state and not a Union Territory.

Let us now try to unpack everything, one by one.

(1) Kerala Health Minister spoke with the aim of belittling the rest of India

BBC was praising her enough as it is. But trust the narrow minded Communist to launch into a tirade over how it was only 3 deaths in Kerala according to State govt. How Central Govt is counting a fourth death in their “account.” How Union Territory of Goa does not have enough hospitals.

(2) Imagine how much BBC is laughing at us

Here’s what BBC anchor and people watching would have thought. Look at this Indian. We praised her. The praise has immediately gone to her head. She is jumping up and down, talking down other Indians. The inferiority complex would have delighted British hearts.

(3) She appeared to be reading something written in front of her. Can there be a slip of tongue in writing?

The Minister’s excuse is that she was talking about Mahe (part of the UT of Puducherry) and not about Goa. That she said Goa by mistake. But she was clearly reading something out. Could there have been a slip of tongue in writing?

(4) Whether she wanted to say Goa or Mahe is a secondary matter

The Minister’s clarification is problematic in itself. Are we supposed to feel better that she says the “not enough hospitals” jibe was directed at Mahe and not Goa? Here’s a basic fact about India for the minister from India’s most literate state : Goa is 100% Indian. Mahe is 100% Indian. Kerala is 100% Indian.

(5) Has the Kerala Health Minister made a public apology to Goa?

An apology can make things better only when news of it is disseminated at least as widely as news of the original act. In this case, while the minister has clarified, I have not been able to find any public apology made by her. If you can find one, I would be happy to know. In fact, the least she could have done is replied to the tweet by Dr. Pramod Sawant.

(6) It looks worse because Goa and Kerala are competitors in the tourism sector

As much as we may despise it, the BBC has huge reach. Goa is a global tourist hub and an irresponsible statement by the minister hurts their economy. When you realize that Goa and Kerala are competitors in the tourism sector, it raises all sorts of questions about the minister’s intentions.

(7) The civility of Dr. Pramod Sawant shines bright

Especially when contrasted with the Kerala Health Minister. Notice that Dr. Sawant did not even try to identify where the fourth patient was from. He merely said that the person was not from Goa. His tweet was classy, factual and very respectful. Exactly the opposite of how the Kerala Health Minister came off in her exchange with BBC.

(8) How come only BJP ruled states are responsible even if something happens outside their borders?

Let us examine the Kerala Health Minister’s statement in light of the migrant worker issue that everyone is talking about. Right now, everyone wants to know: what is the govt of UP doing for migrant workers in Rajasthan or Maharashtra?

That’s interesting. Because Maharashtra and Rajasthan are supposed to have their own functioning governments. But somehow, the responsibility of a migrant worker in say Mumbai or Jaipur appears to lie with Lucknow. Meanwhile, the Kerala Health Minister makes a huge deal out of the fact that her state had to take a couple of patients from a nearby union territory.

(9) Did you know that Kerala hospitals have allegedly refused treatment to a Tamil man in Kerala?

How sad is this news item from 2017?

Untitled
Three Kerala hospitals denied treatment to a Tamil Nadu worker

I hope this is not part of the famed ‘Kerala model.’ The poor man was ultimately taken to Tamil Nadu. The words of the doctor at Coimbatore Govt Hospital in Tamil Nadu are particularly touching.

We came to know that this issue happened in Kerala with a Tamil Nadu patient, but in Coimbatore, we provide treatment to all people free of cost and don’t charge any money. Mostly, 40 per cent of the Kerala people only come to Coimbatore for treatment and we don’t have any such difference.”

Thank you doctor for remembering that we are all equally Indian. Hopefully Kerala’s Health Minister will remember that the next time she goes around boasting about her Kerala model and obsessing over who came from a tiny neighboring union territory.

(10) What if other state govts started talking back to the Kerala govt in similar language?

As hard as it may be for her Communist ego to digest, Kerala isn’t perfect. Just imagine an ugly scenario in which other state governments went to foreign outlets and began shaming Kerala. For instance over its lack of industry, tech, and finance hubs. How would the Communist minister react? She said Goa doesn’t have enough hospitals. What if some other state govt told foreign media tomorrow that Kerala does not have enough factories?

A pandemic was supposed to bring us together. In a country of 130 crore people, that was probably a bridge too far. But the least we can do is not create sinister traditions where state ministers go to mouthpieces of foreign governments to insult other states.

Kolkata: 500 constables attack and chase DCP rank officer for not sanitising barracks after personnel testing positive for coronavirus

In an unusual situation, over 500 constables in Kolkata attacked and chased a Deputy Commissioner rank officer outside his residence on Tuesday night. The agitating constables alleged that their residences were not sanitized after the advent of coronavirus cases.

As per a report in the New Indian Express, a sub-inspector was recently found coronavirus positive in the barracks of the combat wing force of the city police. The constables also alleged that they are not even provided with adequate masks and other safety equipment despite performing their duties in containment zones.

The DCP, NS Paul, who had come to have a dialogue with the constables protesting at the gates of the Police Training School premises, was attacked and chased on the AJC Bose road. He was later rescued by other policemen and was admitted to the hospital.

As per reports, a duty roster to stay present on the city roads on was given to combat wing of Kolkata police on Wednesday in the wake of Cyclone Amphan.

As per the new Indian express report, 500 constables assembled in front of the gate of DCP’s residence and agitated over adaequate measures not being taken after coronavirus patients were found in the police barracks.

A senior officer of Kolkata Police claimed, “While exchanging dialogues, a section of the constables assaulted Paul. Sensing trouble, he started running away and the attacker policemen chased him.”

The constables have alleged that despite performing duties in the containment zones their safety has been completely ignored by the administration. No measures for their safety has been provided.

A constable of a combat force who was agitating said, “After a sub-inspector tested positive for COVID-19, the barrack where he used to live with us was not sanitized. A few days later, three more tested positive and no step was taken to sanitize our barrack. We don’t know how many among us have already infected with the coronavirus.”

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the Police Training School (PTS) where the incident took place and interacted with the agitating constables.

Sharing a video on social media, a BJP member has written that the PTS constables are continuing their agitation in the premises. They have complained over government apathy and lack of proper food and other problems.

West Bengal: Youth dies after being assaulted by TMC councillor Rupali Sarkar and her aides after she was accused of corruption

A youth named Soumen Das from Belghoria’s Basudebpur area in Kamarhati, West Bengal dies after he was allegedly attacked by the Trinamool Congress councillor Rupali Sarkar and her associates on May 4 (Monday) after he posted a video on social media the previous day, showing Sarkar distributing relief to some and not to others. Sarkar and her associates allegedly thrashed Das, who suffered head, chest and waist injuries. He was rushed to Kamarhati Sagar Dutta Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

What transpired?

In the video, Soumen Das had accused TMC councillor Rupali Sarkar of corruption in the distribution of relief supplies to the needy. Following this video, youths of another group posted a video showing Soumen Das collecting items for a community kitchen in the area for the poor. This video also allegedly contained some adverse comments. Trouble began on Monday after Soumen Das protested the posting of a video on social media. As he protested, Das was severely beaten up by the other group, allegedly supporters of local TMC councillor Rupali Sarkar.

The wailing mother of Das said that her son had left home with Rs 100, saying that he along with his friends would contribute to providing food and other relief materials to the needy, but he did not return home after that. Later she got the information that Rupali Sarkar and her goons had beaten Das mercilessly on the road. When they rushed they saw Das lying unconscious on the road. He was then rushed to the hospital.

TMC Councillor Rupali Sarkar was involved in the crime, reveals eye-witnesses and Das’ confession

Eye-witnesses reveal that Rupali Sarkar had pulled Das by his collar and beaten him up along with her associates. Soumen’s relatives also revealed: “We were not being given relief material. Despite repeated appeals, the councillor did not act. Instead, the councillor’s men beat up Soumen mercilessly.”

Moreover, before succumbing to his injuries, Soumen Das himself confirmed to the police that Rupali Sarkar along with her associates had attacked him.

Gopal Saha, chairman of the TMC-run municipality, however, said: “Trouble broke out over distribution of relief material. If anybody had any allegation, he should have lodged a complaint with the administration instead of spreading rumours on social media. We are probing the matter.”

House of TMC Councillor Rupali Sarkar ransacked by angry mob

Post the incident, a mob ransacked the house of a Trinamool Congress councillor. A mob on May 5 (Tuesday) assembled outside Sarkar’s house and pelted stones, police sources said. They were later dispersed by personnel of Rapid Action Force. Barrackpore Police Commissioner Manoj K Verma said one policeman was injured in the stone-pelting by the mob. Rupali Sarkar was escorted out of the area by the police.

The TMC councillor, who had then claimed to have no role in the assault of the youth and said it was a political conspiracy to frame her, has now reportedly surrendered and been taken into custody by the Kamahati police.

Mamata Banerjee’s false promises regarding free distribution of ration

Apart from facing criticisms for her callousness and incompetence for handling the coronavirus outbreak in the state, Mamata Banerjee has also been under the scanner for corruption in Public Distribution System scheme. Despite announcing free ration for over 7.5 crore population in the state till September in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, locals across the state have been regularly complaining of not receiving ration, relief materials and other essential items.

China deploys more forces near Ladakh, sets temporary tents across Galwan river, NSA Doval monitoring closely: Report

The excessive deployment of forces by the Chinese side at the eastern sector, especially in and around Ladakh, is being monitored closely by the top leadership including National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, reports Economic Times.

The face-offs, which started as a little skirmish initiated by the Chinese troops, later took a serious turn after the Chinese side brought in troops and heavy equipment from a military exercise that was being conducted in the region this week. It is also believed that Chinese troops have also taken up positions along the Pangong Tso Lake and are also carrying out aggressive patrols with motorboats to intimidate Indian forces in the region.

As per the report, the Chinese troops have damaged some temporary structures put up in the finger area near Pangong Tso Lake. At the Galwan flashpoint, Chinese troops have maintained their presence and are being countered by a good number of Indian reinforcements. The face-off position at Galwan was extended by the Chinese to another four kilometres as it was reinforced with additional troops this week.

Reportedly, the Chinese may be targetting Darbuk-Shyok-Daula Beg Oldi (DBO) Road that was constructed last year, which is a lifeline for Sub Sector North (SSN). However, Indian forces have successfully deterred the Chinese with aggressive mobilisation. The experts believe that the current power play is very different from 1962 when Chinese forces managed to inflict damage on Indian soldiers with superior numbers.

Apparently, China is unhappy over the construction of a road and bridge at the Galwan area that has recently been undertaken by India for patrolling and to help the local population. These skirmish at the borders has been on to resolved time-to-time through talks and higher-level involvements. However, a recent commentary by the Chinese media has suggested an aggressive stand by the PLA with reports saying that the Chinese side is ‘tightening its grip’ over the region.

The Indian side is yet to comment on the recent aggression of China but the security establishment maintains that such face-offs do occur on the disputed border and are resolved at the ground level after talks.

Several hundred soldiers from each side have been deployed as the Galwan standoff enters its second week. The Chinese side has over 80 tents at the standoff spot and has made temporary defensive positions, and is believed to have moved fast response reinforcements close to the Galwan River.

Troops clashed in Eastern sector

The Galwan stand-off comes at the backdrop of a recent incident where troops of both India and China were involved in two face-offs in a span of a week in the Eastern Ladakh and near Naku La Pass in the Sikkim sector along the contentious border between the two countries.

In the first incident, the Chinese army personnel had clashed with Indian forces along the northern bank of the Pangong Lake in eastern Ladakh on May 5. The face-off ended the next morning following dialogue between the two sides. A number of soldiers on both sides had sustained minor injuries

Just days before, in another incident, nearly 150 Indian and Chinese military personnel had engaged in a face-off near Naku La Pass in the Sikkim sector of the Sino-India border in which at least 10 soldiers sustained injuries.

TikTok’s dark gut: Why porn, sex, rape, violence is allowed to thrive… Ex-employee explains

The Chinese have this idiosyncrasy that ‘they always know better’ if the owner is Chinese. With that belief, they come to markets, where culture is different, languages that they can’t understand, and so on. I have worked for two Chinese companies, ByteDance (TikTok’s owner) being one of them, and I have friends who have worked with other Chinese companies.

Also, I must clarify here that as an ex-employee, there is no vendetta against them from my side, and I am not going to divulge any trade secret here as it is unethical as well as illegal. Still, I will go on to write my experience with a Chinese company as well as what I gathered by knowing people in similar positions at other Chinese organisations.

As I said earlier, they have big trust issues in foreign markets and they don’t rely on inputs from Indian employees. In the conference meetings, they will give you time to speak, they will nod to note and agree to your points, but those issues will persist unless a Chinese thinks it should be fixed.

Imagine, you have 10 years of relevant experience, you have your colleagues with similar amount of knowledge of their field, you have a team leader with around 20 years of expertise on the subject… And then, imagine a person with 4-5 years of irrelevant experience calling the shots.

They rely on the Hindi knowledge of a guy from Beijing University who had a BA in Hindi, than someone like me or friends who have worked with NavBharat Times, Dainik Bhaskar, Dainik Jagran etc. There was this one incident, I remember, where that guy confused Nepali with Hindi as both have similar script. That is their level of understanding.

How they operate in a foreign market

After arriving in a foreign market, the first thing they do is, form teams and put out 3-4 products which is exact replica of something successful. Let’s say, in India people are fond of ShareChat. Then, their ‘survey’ also suggests that Indians like different types of keyboards on their phone. Also, having a keyboard app helps them lift the typing data (including your card number etc) and store it on their servers, almost legally.

Now, they will have small teams where the tech and back-end is looked after from their Chinese headquarters, and the UI etc is done by Indians (under Chinese supervision). They invest a few weeks, send their people with Indians in different parts of India to know what Indians want. Or, they will rely on some big international organisation to give them the information they need.

As weeks pass, they see one particular product showing some promise. Remember, every product is a copy. They not only copy the physical things like cigarette lighter or phone or even missiles, but they copy the apps as well. This copy app is now the main focus of the company, with money power, they start to recruit more people.

With such huge onslaught and marketing, they start to get bigger and, in the end, they get larger market share then the original app. The original app, might be a start-up, gets lost and a local company dies a slow death. That’s how they end competition in physical market, which we all are aware of.

How do they do it in China?

As explained above, Indian guys with 10 and 20 years of experience in their areas, and society, are to follow orders of some Chinese whose only experience is being a Chinese. He/she might have just passed out of a college, but he/she will be my boss’s boss.

With experience and knowledge, you tend to put that out for the betterment of products. At a Chinese company, that is a no-go zone. For them, keeping your experience to yourselves is the best way. They believe, they know the society you have been living in for whole your life, better.

That results in Chinese ways/thoughts being applied on Indian sensibilities. A citizen from a political dictatorship, with only one culture known to them where free speech is subverted, no concept of religion, knows one language, is trying to push his ideas in to a democratic society, with hundreds of cultures, tens of languages, multiple religions.

I talked to a ByteDance employee, who asked not to be named, about his experiences in content auditing process. Content auditing is something like reviewing the content that is available on the app.

He said, “You have also worked there, so you know how things go. They waited for ShareChat to drag them to court for copying UI/UX, frame by frame, screen by screen. We had warned them, but they didn’t care as they knew money will eventually win.”

“When Helo app by ByteDance was dragged for cloning their app and copyright violations, they changed the UI overnight. I was there that time and I know how their whole tech team was working nightshifts to get it going before the court date.”

“As an auditor, we used to get thousands of pornographic posts, images, texts, videos, audio on Helo. It was humanly impossible to clear them all with just 4-5 auditors for one language. For Toutiao, a ByteDance app in China, they have around 10000 employees. Also, they apply stringent filtering mechanism in China to suit government’s agenda,” said the former employee.

So, with that kind of human reviewers and proper AI, ML (machine learning) technology is place, they have become one of the largest user-based app in China with 700 million daily active user. This includes Toutiao as well as TikTok.

If they can provide data filtering mechanism for China and thrive there, what’s stopping them in India?

The TikTok case: What is stopping them in reviewing Indian content?

There are two aspects of it. First, they don’t care till they are pushed to the wall legally. Second, they really don’t care. Didn’t we know TikTok is pushing all kinds of nonsensical posts. It thrives on Hinduphobic, misogynist, patriarchal, sexist, body shaming content that promotes violence, strengthens prejudices and perversions of society in most outrageous ways. In last three days we have seen what kinds of videos are being posted on the platform.

They should, rather than putting what their community guidelines are, focus on better filtering with AI, audit ‘non-Dalai Lama’ content as if it is actually Tibet freedom, then you will be able to see how crass your platform is: nudity, sexism, religious hatred, misinformation.

We have seen kids (below 9-10) posting sexually suggestive video, females getting their breasts squeezed, guys swinging their penis… the absurdity goes on! Can they not use AI to figure out age? Can the content auditors not be watchful of hate/sex/violence promotion? Recent videos have shown them promoting acid attacks, rapes, kids attaching two videos to show him engaging in a sexually suggestive act and so on…

This happens because an app like TikTok does have auditors from India, but the guidelines come from China. For a Chinese acid attack might be a new thing, might not have realised what is ‘Haidar ki talwar’, what slapping a girl for not putting hijab means… The policies are decided oblivious of Indian sensibilities, social values and its complex problems.

They will come and say, “No, we have Indian staff that does those things.”

Keeping Indian staff is just a facade or requirement for business as they are pretty poor at English and business deals in India require good English. Here, I am not being condescending, it is a fact that most of the Chinese working in India can’t speak one proper sentence in English.

Now, think about number of languages in India and how TikTok or Helo works in more than a dozen Indian languages. Even if they figure out one language with large user base, but what about others? Tech world is still figuring out English, the most prevalent language on social media, and here you have India where languages not only sound different but even tone changes the meaning.

So, it will be quite a task for them to put tech in to it. The other way is to employ more people, like they do in China and have extensive audit processes so that the app doesn’t promote ghastly crimes like rape, massacre of Hindus, violence against women etc.

When Indian staff is not the deciding authority, it results in the disasters that we are seeing today on TikTok where content audit is so liberal that someone wanting for heads of kafirs is being allowed. This is not one-off instance. No. Such songs (Haider ki talwar) are pretty viral and many post it almost everyday. One viral song will be repeatedly posted by a large pool of users with their own spin or choreography of the  act.

So, these things can be easily figured out by systems and the most viral stuff (that has more potential of damage in those cases) can be audited on priority. It can be pushed forward and seen if one audio is getting traction among users, what kind of audio it is, does it have potential of misuse, is it actually being misused?

They can run a line of code, identify that audio and kill it before it spreads out. They can warn all the users that next violation will result in suspension (or whatever their policy is). Did they do it? No.

Misuse of platform is written all over TikTok

Similarly, use of a girl’s content, without her permission, is visible everywhere that we see boys using half of the video screen to show they are ‘raping’ her, getting a ‘blow job’, throwing acid on face, saying selective words to make her look like some slut. The absurdity goes on.

So, if TikTok wakes up one fine day to tell that they promote creativity and have community guidelines, that’s a farce. All they care is how many million are on their platform and how their engagement rate can go up. To push engagement time, they let many things pass.

They keep sitting on it till some thing blows up. The engagement increases with porn, sexually suggestive acts, pervert posts, soft-porn, sexually charged words… This is human tendency. This type of content has larger consumption rate. We have seen this on YouTube where you put a sexually suggestive thumbnail and the views would be more. Now they have discouraged it.

So, TikTok management let it slip because more people are spending time on the platform. They’ve a number to show to brands. As quoted above, three apps by ByteDance, including TikTok, have a monthly active user base of 1.5 billion.

Those numbers are impressive. Then you show your influencer is way, way, way better than that guy on FB or TW or IG or YT… You have an idiot with harlequin-inspired hair, doing absolute shit, promoting r#pe and acid attacks, with 14.3 million followers.

In 15 seconds he can do a #skirt thing and you will have a paid guy telling you how much engagement that one post gave him and now he has a dog that has started to love him… You all know the late night telebrand ads.

So, you are winning the ‘brands in my platform’ war. You bring actors, celebrities on your platform showing them engagement and say that this is the next big thing. It has multiplier effect. Celebs attract more users. The problem of content moderation is hushed off as ‘these things are on every platform’, or ‘we have a mechanism where people can report it.’

Basically, nothing happens because they don’t feel the heat. The pressure of society or policy should be good enough so that they employ more people and do proper content review.

Chinese apps and Big data

Apart from hiding under UGC (user generated content) thing and throwing all responsibility on the users, they also engage in serious data theft. Users give up thousands of MBs of data to these apps. Try to install any Chinese app on Android based phones and ask yourselves, why does an app need access to your SMS, contacts, photos, media and even keystrokes? Ask yourselves.

Unknowingly, the users fall prey to sinister motives of these Chinese companies who are working hard to control markets (and lives through big data) by selling your info to companies that make products. They sell your behaviour, likes and dislikes, interests and even movement.

They have serious privacy issues. In fact, several apps have that. That is altogether another aspect, but to warn you a bit more, let me explain it quickly. Android phones have this ‘speed up’, ‘boost speed’, ‘phone cleaner’ type of apps. Do you know how it works?

They get access to everything on your phone, they even tell you that there is 1.7 GB of data ti be cleaned and show you a sign of rocket taking you data pretty fast. Well, that rocket is going to China. The whole cleaning process is a way to take all you information from you and upload that on servers. Later, it is sold to Alibaba, Amazon or any company which requires that.

Ban TikTok till they show a way to deal with this menace

TikTok does have a fun aspect to it, a platform for expression, a voice for the unheard… We have seen what it can do to those who have been ignored or never had a voice. It does have a creative aspect as well.

But, the negatives are many.

The predominant display of suggestive sex, perversion, sexism, misogyny, verbal pornography, morphed/edited misuse of use content, misinformation, religious extremism, domestic violence, male violence, forced behaviour… is just too much to let it slide.

Banning is the only solution, but that has to be on all subsequent similar platforms where content audit is pathetic. Banning TikTok is only possible solution because they don’t seem to have the technology to identify violations quoted above.

When they have the tech, they should do a public demo that someone is posting a video and, in real time, that video is analysed and allowed, or held for review, before it appears to millions. Or, they can employ thousands of reviewers, identify viral audio signatures, videos and prioritise them in audit, delay posting of content till review is done.

If you can’t ensure that, they have no right to give this sugar-coated slow-poison to users.

NIA arrests Hizbul terrorist and close aide of Riyaz Naikoo involved in the killing of an RSS worker

Indian security agencies achieved yet another breakthrough towards the elimination of Hizbul Mujahideen from the Kashmir Valley when the National Investigation Agency(NIA) arrested one of the most wanted militants from Kishtwar who was allegedly involved in the killing of RSS worker Chander Kant Sharma and his PSO among others.

Identified as Rustam Ali, according to the reports, he was a close aide of slain terrorist Riyaz Naikoo, who was recently neutralised by the Armed Forces in south Kashmir. Notably, the arrest was made after Rustam’s other partner Tahir Bhat, also alleged to be involved in the killing of the RSS functionary, was shot dead by the security forces in an encounter that took place at the Gundana area in Jammu and Kashmir on May 18, 2020.

While Tahir was entrusted with the task of recruiting local youth in the terror ranks in Doda district, Rustam headed the task of enrolling the youth in adjoining Kishtwar.

Tahir and Rustom along with their other associates had allegedly killed Kishtwar’s well-known social worker and RSS leader Chander Kant Sharma in the hospital in April 2019. In this terror attack, Sharma’s PSO was also killed. The case was handed over to the NIA which in its charge-sheet named Rustam Ali as the accused in the killing of the RSS functionary and his PSO.

Hizbul Mujahideen module in Kashmir severely weakened

The Indian Armed Forces have almost destroyed the Hizbul Mujahideen module in Jammu and Kashmir. The forces are aggressively pursuing their objective of the complete elimination of terror organisations, including Hizbul Mujahideen from the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. In this pursuit, top Hizbul commander Riyaz Naikoo was killed by the forces in an encounter recently.

The slain Hizbul terrorist was quite active in the valley and was responsible for various abductions and recruitment of fresh blood to the Hizbul Mujahideen over the years.

A joint team of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Army’s 55 Rashtriya Rifles and CRPF had launched a search operation in Beighpora after security agencies were a tipped-off about the presence of terrorists in the area. The operation was reportedly launched to track down Naikoo.

Yesterday, another two Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists were eliminated by the security forces. Of the two terrorists killed in the encounter, one of them was identified as Junaid Sehrai, the son of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat chairman Mohammed Ashraf Sehrai. Junaid Sehrai was a divisional commander of Hizb-ul Mujahideen and was also responsible for several terror activities in Central Kashmir. The second terrorist was Tariq Ahmed Sheikh of Pulwama who had joined the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen terror outfit a couple of months ago in March.

Loud sound heard across Bengaluru as window panes, buildings shake, netizens speculate sonic boom

On Wednesday, social media was abuzz with posts from Bengaluru with a huge boom sound people heard in the city. Many people posted on Twitter that a blast sound was heard in Bengaluru at around 1:30 PM, which caused window panes to shake.

Social media users informed that the sound was heard all over the city from electronic city to Whitefield.

Although many people wondered whether the sound was caused by an earthquake, as windows and other things in the houses vibrated, it was ruled out by the authorities. Srinivas Reddy, Director of the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), informed that their sensors have not recorded any earthquake activitiy.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police of Whitefield said that the police are investigating the cause of the boom sound. The DCP said that there are no reports of any damage on the ground due to the boom. He added that this can be a sound created by a supersonic plane.

In fact, many people also speculated that it was a sonic boom created by a supersonic fighter jet of Indian Air Force. Several people also said that it was created by a Mirage 2000, and informed that the jets have been flying over the area since morning today.

Sonic boom

Sonic boom is the sound which is created when an object moves faster than the speed of the sound. When a supersonic jet accelerates and crosses the speed of the sound, it creates shock waves, which creates the very loud boom noise. The shock waves also cause windows and other objects in the vicinity to shack, which can be a frightening experience, and due to which people may mistake it for an earthquake.

Due to this reason, generally planes are not allowed to go supersonic over residential areas, but sometimes they need to do it, and today’s incident can be one such occasion. It may be noted that there is air force base near Bengaluru, and the fighter planes routinely fly from that base. As speculated, such a fighter plane, most probably a Mirage 2000, caused the sonic boom today afternoon over the Karnataka capital.

Update: As reported by TheNewsMinute, HAL has confirmed that the sound had nothing to do with them. Bengaluru Police is waiting for Air Force to confirm if this was a flight. Currently an investigation is going on regarding the same.

FIR lodged by Ahmedabad Police against online portal Muslim Mirror for calling officers of Crime Branch “armed BJP and RSS activists”

The Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Cell on Tuesday registered a case against an online media portal, Muslim Mirror for tweeting a video on May 9 claiming that armed BJP and RSS activists had joined Ahmedabad Police in Shahpur area of the city to enforce lockdown orders. Twitter user and Swarajya intern Harshil Mehta, took to Twitter to share the copy of the FIR against the media portal.

According to police, the men marching in plain clothes showed in the video, posted on May 9 by a Twitter account user- Muslim Mirror.com, which is an online media portal with Twitter handle @Muslimmirror, belong to the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) team of Ahmedabad police and not ‘armed BJP and RSS goons’.

The Ahmedabad police said that the video uploaded by the accused Twitter account shows the flag march conducted by police and crime branch personnel in plain clothes after the clash in Shahpur on May 8.

Muslim mob pelted stones at police personnel after they went to enforce lockdown

In yet another attack on police personal during the Coronavirus pandemic, a Muslim mob attacked a police team after they went to enforce lockdown in Ahmedabad city on May 8.

According to the reports, the incident took place in the Shahpur area of Ahmedabad when an agitated mob pelted stones at policemen who were at the spot to disperse a gathering of people. A police inspector RK Amin was injured in the stone-pelting. The police team had to use tear-gas shells to disperse the violent Muslim mob at Shahpur.

Reportedly, the stone-pelting began after a team of Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel asked people to follow the lockdown rules. A few locals were allegedly beaten up by RAF personnel as they had stepped out of their house to procure food commodities despite a complete shutdown observed in Ahmedabad.

A local team of Shahpur police station arrived at the spot and a mob of over two dozen resorted to stone-pelting in which five police personnel were injured. They were rushed to a nearby primary health centre (PHC) for treatment.

Muslim-dominated Shahpur under ‘Red Zone’

It is pertinent to note that Shahpur is a minority community-dominated area. The area falls under ‘Red Zone’ category as several coronavirus cases have been found in the locality. As of May 20, almost 9,000 people in Ahmedabad have tested positive of the deadly virus that originated in Wuhan, China.

The Ahmedabad police had detained 15 persons in connection with the stone-pelting incident.

Renowned environmentalist Afroz Shah alleges harassment by Mumbai Police for helping migrants and poor amidst coronavirus lockdown

As the coronavirus induced lockdown cripples the financial hub of the country, leaving lakhs of migrants and destitute reliant on hand-to-mouth survival in a state of quandary, a raft of individuals and several notable personalities have stepped up to the task of providing food and needs of daily essentials to such an underprivileged lot of people.

These individuals, popularly hailed as “corona warriors” along with the front-line workers such as doctors, nurses and others, are going on great lengths to aid the state and central government in mitigating the untoward consequences of coronavirus lockdown by providing food, masks, sanitisers and items of daily necessities to the needy ones who are worst-hit by the economic fallout of the rampaging contagion.

However, in many cases, these “corona warriors” are not being treated by the police and the law enforcement officials with the respect that they deserve. For their deed of selflessly helping the poor and the needy, they are pestered needlessly, deflating them from persisting with their altruistic pursuits.

In one such case, renowned environmentalist and lawyer, Afroz Shah, known for spearheading the world’s largest beach cleanup project-Versova Beach clean and who is also involved in activities meant to alleviate miseries of the poor and the homeless amidst the coronavirus lockdown, took to Twitter to express his disappointment with the Mumbai police.

Afroz has been tirelessly helping the migrant workers, providing them with juice, water and food and arranging for their transportation over some distance to partially reduce the hardship of walking to their destination amidst scorching heat. However, Shah was detained by the Mumbai Police for ferrying migrant workers to their destination in Mumbai.

Shah alleged that he was harassed for 2 long hours by Tilak Nagar police. Despondent by the harassment, Shah declared that he will be suspending all his activities directed towards helping the poor during the coronavirus lockdown.

Many netizens reacted to the treatment meted out to Afroz and condemned Mumbai Police for his mistreatment. BJP leader Kapil Mishra posted a tweet in support of the environmentalist, extolling him for helping the homeless and needy ones during the lockdown and denounced the Mumbai Police for maltreating and harassing him.

Others, too, joined in decrying the Maharashtra government and its leadership for detaining Afroz and hounding him unnecessarily.

It is pertinent to note that Mumbai has emerged as one of the most potent coronavirus hotspots in the country with the city’s tally of COVID-19 caseloads crossing 22,700-mark. In such a scenario, it is more important than ever that the Mumbai Police leverage the help extended to them by selfless individuals, celebrities and others in bringing the outbreak under control while also ensuring that the human cost of the crisis is minimised. By harassing individuals who are willing to lend a helping hand to those affected by the lockdown fallout, Mumbai Police only seems to be compounding its own problems.
