Last surviving member of Burhan Wani’s gang of Hizbul terrorists killed in Shopian encounter

The last surviving member of the Burhan Wani led group belonging to the terrorist organisation, Hizbul-Mujahideen, Lateef Ahmad Dar alias Lateef Tiger has been neutralised in an encounter by security forces in Kashmir’s Shopian on Friday. With this, the 11 member group of Burhan Wani stands completely eliminated.

Media reports state that Lateef and another terrorist named Tariq Maulvi have been killed in an encounter in Shopian.

Slain Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani’s famous group photo, which went viral on social media in 2015, had 11 terrorists along with arms and ammunitions posed in it with Burhan in the centre, to announce the birth of “new-age militancy” in Kashmir.

Nine team members were already neutralised earlier and one team member had surrendered. Now with the last member, Lateef Tiger being killed, the entire Burhan Wani’ group stands eliminated.

Meanwhile, the operation which is underway was launched by a joint team of 34RR and Special Operations Group (SOG) in Adkhara area of Imam Sahib of Shopian district on Friday morning, following inputs on the presence of terrorists in the area.

Tariq Maulvi alias Mufti Wakas, another terrorist has also been killed in the encounter. However, authorities have not yet officially confirmed the news.

In the exchange of firing which took place between the security forces and terrorist, an Army man has been reportedly injured, while two more terrorists are still trapped in the area. The area has been cordoned off.

Mobile internet services have been snapped in south Kashmir by the authorities as a precautionary measure.

Following the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen chief, Burhan Wani, on July 7, 2016, in an encounter in the Kokernag area of south Kashmir, Shopian district, which falls under Anantnag Parliamentary Constituency, became one of the worst violence-hit areas in Kashmir.

It is notable here that Burhan Wani was a dreaded Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist who was gunned down by Indian security forces in 2016. Wani’s death was used by scores of Kashmiri separatists and even Indian ‘liberals’ to peddle separatist narratives and had created months of unrest in the valley. Journalist Barkha Dutt had introduced Wani as the ‘son of a school headmaster’.

Pakistan had also attempted to fan the unrest in the valley by hailing Burhan Wani as a martyr. Former PM Nawaz Sharif had even addressed Wani as a ‘young leader’ in an address in the United Nations. Last year, in another brazen attempt, Pakistan had issued a series of postage stamps commemorating Wani and terrorists in Kashmir hailing them as martyrs.

India had reacted strongly to the stamp release and had proceeded to cancel a scheduled meeting between EAM Sushma Swaraj and her Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi.

Meanwhile, Pakistan continuing with its effort to exalt terrorists and celebrate radical Islamists has recently allowed the release of a movie on Burhan Wani’s life. Not only this, but it also has one of its legislator from Imran Khan’ party, named Aamir Liyaqat Hussain playing the role of Burhan Wani in the film.

However, details regarding the terrorist encounter are still emerging and there has been no official word yet.

Rahul Gandhi is like the Joker. He just wants to watch the world burn

Remember Joker from The Dark Knight Rises? The menacing Joker who is wreaking havoc and chaos on the streets of Gotham taunts Harvey Dent, “Do I really look like a guy with a plan? You know what I am? I’m a dog chasing cars. I wouldn’t know what to do with one if I caught it! You know, I just… *do* things.”

Congress President Rahul Gandhi is just like that.

He is just throwing allegations without any base and would probably have no idea what to do if someone actually questions him. He may have apologised to the Supreme Court for wrongly attributing Congress campaign ‘Chowkidar Chor Hai’ to the apex court ‘in the heat of the moment’ but he is not done yet.

In his interview with India Today, Rahul Gandhi has shown how he doesn’t really have a plan except to wreak havoc and chaos.

The Gandhi scion was speaking on being persistent when the interviewer threw a softball question at him towards the end. Rahul Gandhi’s suggestion to improve fitness was ‘being persistent’. “You can’t run 5 km right now, but you can run 5 km if you’re persistent. We’ll get you to 5 km to 10 km to 20 km, to 200 km! But don’t start with the idea that you can’t do it. You can. All it takes is persistence,” said the ‘fitness freak’ (interviewer’s words) Rahul Gandhi.

He then topped it up with an example of persistence. “Everyone told me Mr Narendra Modi can’t be defeated. I said, Yeah, you really think so?’ I asked them, Tell me what Mr Narendra Modi’s strength is.’ They said, His strength is his [incorruptible] image.’ I said, Okay, I’m going to rip that strength to pieces. I’m going to take it and shred it.’ And I’ve done it. Persistence, my friend! Keep going and keep going and keep going. And I will keep going until the truth on Rafale is out!”

So it seems the only reason he has brought up the Rafale bogey is he wanted to ‘rip apart’ PM Modi’s strength of ‘incorruptible image’. To “take it and shred it”. Effectively, Rahul Gandhi persistently sent the country on a wild goose chase, cast aspersions of a defence scam, play with the nationalistic feelings of Indian citizens, brazen out the lies despite official clarifications even from the French partners only to destroy Modi’s image. Because, why let facts get in the way of creating chaos? Especially when you are a man with no plan.

In his NDTV interview, Rahul Gandhi had repeated this as well. That he has succeeded in shattering PM Modi’s ‘incorruptible image’. In fact, he had even prided in the fact that when he started off with the Rafale rhetoric, only 20% people believed that there was a scam in Rafale, whereas now, according to Congress’ ‘internal numbers’, 67% of the country believes that there is a scam in Rafale.

So it is not about corruption but the perception of corruption created to put a man who is known for his incorruptible image in a dock so that people start doubting it. To sow a seed of doubt in people’s mind because if a lie is repeated a thousand times, people start believing it as truth.

Rahul Gandhi claims in this interview that he does not lie. When questioned by the interviewer about ‘going after the big guys’ to curb corruption, Rahul Gandhi says, “It’s not a question of going after the big guys. It’s not like we’re going to be vindictive and go after anyone. There are laws. They must be followed.” This was in response to his lies regarding Rafale and how Anil Ambani was ‘given’ Rs 30,000 crore. See how Rahul Gandhi says the law will take its own course? Just a few minutes later, when the interviewer asks him where will the money for NYAY come from, “Some of this money is going to come from crony capitalists like Anil Ambani,” pat comes the reply.

If this is not being vindictive, I am not sure what is. Like his alter ego Arvind Kejriwal would say, on odd days he’s not vindictive and won’t go after ‘big guys’, but on even days, he will make sure money for his populist nightmare will come from ‘crony capitalists like Anil Ambani’. Earlier also he had said how the NYAY will be funded by money recovered from defaulters of bank loans. The money which actually belongs to the depositors. Rahul Gandhi then adds how they have already ‘tested’ the financial model for NYAY. Effectively, it means, he does not look like a man with a plan.

The interviewer, too, repeats the ‘Rs 15 lakh in bank account’ lie. This Rs. 15 lakh trope is being spread by Congress and its functionaries for the longest time. In reality, the Prime Minister had never promised that he would transfer Rs. 15 lakh in every citizen’s account. He had also mentioned Rs. 15 lakh as an indication of the quantum of black money stashed abroad.

Rahul Gandhi then says how his NYAY promise will not be a ‘lie’. He says that the money for NYAY “is not going to come from the middle class. That is my guarantee to you. That not a rupee of this thing is going to come out of your taxes. We’ve done the calculations, the money is going to come from present revenue streams, from reducing inefficiencies in government schemes and from better monetisation of government assets.” So, either Rahul Gandhi is lying, or his trusted lieutenants and advisers are lying.

If the money is going to come from ‘present revenue streams, from reducing inefficiencies in government schemes’, does that mean that if voted to power, Congress will kill all existing subsidies and make NYAY the mother of all scams? Gas, fertilizer, electricity, crop prices, MNREGA, health – will all these subsidies go to make way for NYAY? Those 3.6 lakh crore rupees ain’t coming on their own, no?

Sam Pitroda, veteran Congress ideologue and Rahul Gandhi’s advisor, has stated that the NYAY scheme will have to be funded by raising taxes for the middle class. In fact, Pitroda had even tried to guilt trip the middle class by asking them to have a ‘big heart’. Putting the onus of guilt on the middle class for worrying about taxes, Pitroda said, “How can you see poor people around you and worry that somebody might take a 10 paisa from you. That is not India.” Abhijit Banerjee, the economist who has been advising Congress in the formulation of the scheme had also stated that NYAY will have to be funded by rising inflation and new taxes.

Displaying his utter lack of comprehension, when the interviewer asks him whether he considers himself a naamdaar (dynast), Rahul Gandhi invokes his father and grandmother whom he has seen get killed but his experience is not same as theirs and hence calling him a dynast is too ‘simplistic’. You see, for the beautiful mind of Rahul Gandhi, he is not a dynast because despite being born into one of the most powerful political families, his experiences are different from that of his great grandfather, grandmother and father and hence he should not be called a ‘naamdaar’.

This interview of Rahul Gandhi reminded me of yet another dialogue from The Dark Knight. It is a conversation between Bruce Wayne and his butler Alfred Pennyworth.

Bruce Wayne: [while in the underground bat cave] Targeting me won’t get their money back. I knew the mob wouldn’t go down without a fight, but this is different. They crossed the line.

Alfred Pennyworth: You crossed the line first, sir. You squeezed them, you hammered them to the point of desperation. And in their desperation, they turned to a man they didn’t fully understand.

Bruce Wayne: Criminals aren’t complicated, Alfred. Just have to figure out what he’s after.

Alfred Pennyworth: With respect Master Wayne, perhaps this is a man that *you* don’t fully understand, either. A long time ago, I was in Burma. My friends and I were working for the local government. They were trying to buy the loyalty of tribal leaders by bribing them with precious stones. But their caravans were being raided in a forest north of Rangoon by a bandit. So, we went looking for the stones. But in six months, we never met anybody who traded with him. One day, I saw a child playing with a ruby the size of a tangerine. The bandit had been throwing them away.

Bruce Wayne: So why steal them?

Alfred Pennyworth: Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren’t looking for anything logical, like money. They can’t be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Rahul Gandhi can’t be bullied or reasoned with because he isn’t looking for anything logical. He just wants to watch the world burn.

Petition filed to EC for cancellation of Rahul Gandhi’s nomination till the matter of his ‘British citizenship’ is decided upon

A petition has been submitted to the Election Commission pleading the cancellation of Rahul Gandhi’s nomination from Amethi until the matter of his alleged British citizenship has been resolved by the competent authority, that is, the central government, specifically, the Home Ministry.

The application, filed by Rajneesh Kumar Singh says that matter of Rahul Gandhi’s British citizenship is pending before the central government since the year 2015 and that the applicant, Rajneesh Kumar Singh had written to the Election Commission on 15th April 2019 requesting the cancellation of Rahul Gandhi’s Amethi nomination on the same grounds and that the applicant had also filed a writ petition before the High Court bench of Lucknow.

The High Court, says the petition, had directed Rajneesh to file an application on the same before the central government, that is the competent authority and the Court had directed the government to act expeditiously in the matter.

The petition goes on to say that the matter of Indian citizenship of Rahul Gandhi and his membership of Parliament has been challenged before the High Court on the ground that Rahul Gandhi has acquired British Nationality as such, he has lost his Indian citizenship under provision of Article 9 of the Constitution of India, read with Citizenship Act 1955. It also says that owing to this, Rahul Gandhi has also lost the right to contest the Parliamentary elections under the provision of Article 84 clause 2 sub-clause 9(k).

Screenshot of the petition

The petition then says that till the matter of citizenship and eligibility to contest parliamentary elections is subjudiced before the central government, the nomination of Rahul Gandhi as a candidate from Amethi should be cancelled in the interest of justice.

Rahul Gandhi British Nationality has been a contentious issue since 2015 after MP Subramanian Swamy raised the issue. He presented documents where Rahul Gandhi had listed himself as a British citizen in some documents pertaining to his company Backops.

The central government had issued a notice and given Rahul Gandhi a fortnight to respond to the representation made by Subramanian Swamy recently.

Congress had released an explanation that was tweeted by loyalist media person Pallavi Ghosh. The party had released an old British document that listed Rahul Gandhi as an Indian citizen to counter the British nationality allegation. However, the explanation released by Congress had raised more questions than answered as OpIndia had discovered.

The Supreme Court on Thursday agreed to hear a plea to direct the Election Commission of India (ECI) to debar Congress president Rahul Gandhi from contesting the Lok Sabha polls and “becoming a Member of Parliament” after he had “voluntarily acquired British nationality.” The plea was filed by Delhi residents Jai Bhagwan Goyal and Chander Prakash Tyagi.

Mumbai Mirror prints cartoon calling PM Modi the “Butcher from Godhra”, retracts and apologises later

Prime Minister Modi is perhaps one of the very few national leaders who get more hatred from the media than they attract from opposition leaders. India’s mainstream media and a section of self-proclaimed ‘liberal intellectuals’ often attack the democratically elected, immensely popular Prime Minister of India with derogatory names, baseless allegations and most of the times, just raging, unadulterated, and raw hatred.

Another example of it was seen recently in a ‘cartoon’ printed in Mumbai Mirror. It cited PM Modi as the ‘Butcher from Godhra’.

The derogatory cartoon made by one Ashish Asthana was published under ‘Journalist’ Aakar Patel’s column ‘Poll Dance’ yesterday. The cartoon appeared to project PM Modi as a hopeful monarch ‘AkiNaMo’ who intends to rule for te next 50 years, by depicting him as a Butcher by profession from Godhra.

It portrayed Rahul Gandhi as a trainee from Delhi who wants to ask his ‘ChrysantheMum’ first.

The idea behind the ‘AkiNaMo and ChrysantheMum’ terms is from the recent coronation of Japan’s new emperor Naruhito, where the former emperor Akihito had abdicated his throne for his son and heir. The imperial seat of Japan is known as the Chrysanthemum Throne.

However, the outrageous, tasteless and extremely derogatory depiction of the PM of India drew a lot of flak from social media and readers of Mumbai Mirror.

As per latest reports, Mumbai Mirror has retracted the cartoon from its e-paper and has apologised. An apology was shared in the e-paper version from the editor. It read, “In the column, Poll Dance, that takes a satirical look at elections, there was a cartoon that referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a derogatory fashion. This was uncalled for, in poor taste, and a clear oversight on our part editorially to let it go through. Our apologies for the same. This illustration has been taken off from both our online editions and the e-paper.”

Meenal Baghel is the current editor of Mumbai Mirror.

Apology printed by Mumbai Mirror after the derogatory cartoon against PM Modi

This is, however, not the first time Mumbai Mirror has published derogatory and distasteful remarks against a political leader. Last year, they had published a column by one ‘fashion blogger’ who had written extremely misogynistic, derogatory and distasteful remarks against Union minister Smriti Irani.

The so-called fashion blogger had not only attempted to compare the textile ministry, the ministry that controls over 2% of India’s GDP, 15% of total exports and over 45 million jobs as a “knitting room”, she had claimed that Smriti Irani had reached her position by “sucking up to the boss”. The article had even attempted to criticise Irani for her body weight and appearance.

India Today interview: Rahul Gandhi says he wants to destroy Modi’s image, interviewer repeats a lie about Modi

Rahul Gandhi, the President of the Congress party gave a rare interview to India Today. In the interview, Rahul Gandhi spoke about a host of subjects including the Congress’ strategy to ‘defeat Modi’ in these 2019 Lok Sabha elections. However, there was one extremely revealing segment, where the malice of Rahul Gandhi and the servility of the interviewer was starkly visible.

In one segment, Rahul Gandhi interestingly reveals his true plans and talks about how one of his primary goals during campaigning was destroying the image of Narendra Modi.

In this segment, Rahul Gandhi says that when he started off, he asked his partymen what Narendra Modi’s strength was and they said, his strength is his incorruptible image.

Rahul Gandhi says that his response was “Okay, I’m going to rip that strength to pieces. I’, going to take it and shred it”. He then asserts that he has managed to do just that because he was ‘persistent’.

Rahul makes a rather interesting revelation here. The Rafale deal rhetoric has been a persistent campaign ploy with the Congress party and Rahul Gandhi. The desperation to prove that a scam existed in the Rafale deal was such that Rahul Gandhi once lied blatantly on the floor of the house, claiming that the French President had spoken to Rahul Gandhi personally and told him that there was corruption in the Rafale deal. Later, in a massive embarrassment, the French government had to issue a statement, essentially saying that Rahul Gandhi lied and no such meeting ever took place.

In their desperation to prove that Rafale deal was a scam, Rahul Gandhi even pretended to visit ailing Manohar Parrikar as a courtesy visit. That “courtesy visit” was later turned into a ploy to attack the Rafale deal. Rahul Gandhi used a visit made to an ailing Chief Minister to claim that Manohar Parrikar had himself told Rahul Gandhi that he had some files on the Rafale deal and that there was a scam in the deal. Parrikar, suffering from cancer, had to come out and issue a statement calling out Rahul Gandhi’s lies. In fact, even after Manohar Parrikar lost the battle to cancer, even in death, Rahul Gandhi lied in Manohar Parrikar’s name.

The changing numbers of the “scam” amount, the fact that his allegation of the amount “Modi gave to Ambani” is greater than the entire offset amount, the shoddy audio tape that was thrown out by the parliament, the fact that the Supreme Court itself gave a clean chit to the deal and the fact that he admitted that the Supreme Court had made no observation of ‘chowkidar chor hai’ as he had alleged are all facts that have been put forth a number of times. Rahul Gandhi was forced to apologise.

After all of this, the fact that Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly walked the path of lies, thereby undermining national security, was a conundrum that alluded many, until now.

With Rahul Gandhi’s admission that he wanted to “rip PM Modi’s incorruptible image”, the strategy behind his Rafale lies are clear. With Congress’ corrupt image that reduced them to 44 seats in 2014, the only way Rahul Gandhi thought Congress could even have a shot at winning was by shattering the PM’s image.

In his NDTV interview, Rahul Gandhi had repeated this as well. That he has succeeded in shattering PM Modi’s ‘incorruptible image’. He, in fact, went ahead and said that when he started off with the Rafale rhetoric, only 20% people believed that there was a scam in Rafale, whereas now, according to Congress’ internal numbers, 67% of the country believes that there is a scam in Rafale. Interestingly, according to CVoter, as on 2nd May 2019, only 9.68% believe that corruption is an issue in the country at all. Unfortunately, we don’t have the data from the Congress era to compare, but logic dictates that the number would have been much, much higher. If according to CVoter data, only a little over 9% believe that corruption is an issue, where the 67% number that Rahul Gandhi cites comes from is a mystery. Perhaps just like most of his lies, this number has also been pulled out from the deepest corner of his vivid imagination.

While Rahul Gandhi lies blatantly, what is interesting is how the interviewer just stays mum and lets Rahul run around with his inconsistencies, unabated.

The Rafale lies were un-countered in both the India Today interview and the NDTV interview. The interviewers were more than happy to let Rahul Gandhi further his lies. Not one question was asked about how his “money given to Ambani” number is higher than the entire offset amount or how Rahul’s own Eurofighter shenanigans play a part in his Rafale rhetoric.

In the India Today interview, the interviewer goes a step ahead. He repeats a lie about PM Modi, out of the blue.

The interviewer asks Rahul Gandhi whether NYAY will be like Modi’s “failed promise of putting Rs 15 lakh in every bank account from the money seized abroad”.

A blatant lie, repeated by a journalist, to help Rahul Gandhi further his lies and propaganda.

Prime Minister Modi had mentioned ‘Rs 15 lakh in every bank account’ to indicate the quantum of money that is stashed abroad. Basically saying that there is so much black money stashed abroad that everyone can get Rs 15 lakh if that money is brought back. At no point of time, was this rhetoric an actual promise that was made to the people of India. For Congress trolls to further this lie is understandable, for a journalist to further this lie just so Rahul Gandhi can lie further is unfathomable.

The media has a penchant of soft-balling the Gandhis. Who can forget Shekhar Gupta asking Sonia Gandhi whether she knew how to cook and whether she tossed the pasta? Or Rajdeep Sardesai asking Sonia Gandhi about her mother-in-law. Or even a Pallavi Ghosh asking Rahul Gandhi about his dog, Pidi. The nature of soft-balling changes. From talking about mothers-in-law to aiding and abetting political lies, however, the nature of the interviews remain the same – an attempt to help the Gandhis perpetuate their lies further.

None of these journalists asked Rahul Gandhi about his own dubious deals. The fact that Christian Michel was a lobbyist for Eurofighter and against Rafale or that in his fax, he had said that Sweden has sway over the Gandhis because of the Bofors scam. Or whether Rahul Gandhi met Eurofighter representatives in Germany and does he have links to Arms Dealer Sanjay Bhandari or even whether his mother, Sonia Gandhi’s Italian family benefitted from the Bofors scam. The pliant media merely displays its servility to the Gandhis, one softball interview at a time.

Child Rights body issues notice to Priyanka Gandhi Vadra over use of children in election campaign

Congress General Secretary for UP East Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has been served a notice by National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) for using children in election campaign. This is related to a video in which children were seen shouting slogans against Prime Minister Modi in abusive language, as she stood there cheering them.

However, blaming the BJP for editing the video clip, Gandhi had said that she had stopped the children from using abusive language for the PM. “I’m sorry but I stopped children from saying slogans which I thought were not correct about the Prime Minister,” she said. “I stopped them. The BJP has edited the tape and made this allegation which is typical of them. Because they twist the truth. I speak the truth”, she added.

The NCPCR had yesterday written to the Election Commission (EC) regarding the video requesting to ensure that children are not involved for the election purposes and had recommended to all National Parties not to use children for distribution of posters/pamphlets, participate in slogan shouting, etc.

The NCPCR notice to Priyanka Gandhi Vadra notes that in the video, children are being actively involved in election campaigning, which is a violation of the model code of conduct for elections.

The letter also stated an earlier order of the EC in which the poll body had mentioned that such violation of children’s rights for any work connected with the election process like campaigning, carrying of campaigning material, etc. would attract necessary action and apart from facing the consequences of the law if any, will be taken by the Commission against erring political parties. The NCPCR urged the EC to take the necessary action as per its discretion.

The NCPCR has asked Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to respond to the notice within 3 days, mentioning the name and address of the children seen in the video, the place where the incident took place, and how the children were brought there.

Even as Priyanka does a u-turn, Rahul Gandhi confirms her initial statement of Congress acting as a vote cutter

Finally overcoming the ghost of the interview with Arnab Goswami in 2014, which had disastrous political consequences for Rahul Gandhi, the Congress president gave an interview to a media channel known for harbouring sympathies for Congress.

In an interview with NDTV, Rahul Gandhi reiterated his sister’s earlier stance that Congress has put up candidates across Uttar Pradesh with the singular aim of cutting into BJP votes.

When asked why the Congress party has fielded candidates across the state of Uttar Pradesh, Rahul Gandhi said, “Our aim is defeat the BJP. The BJP and PM Modi are not coming to power again. Wherever we have strong candidates in UP, we’ll fight for our space. Places where we have weaker candidates, we’ll ensure that the BJP candidate doesn’t win and a secular candidate is elected.”

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi had earlier stated that Congress has fielded candidates across Uttar Pradesh to cut into BJP votes. However, she quickly backtracked on her statement saying Congress candidates are fielded to defeat BJP.

Congress chief Rahul Gandhi alluded in the interview that Congress’ aim is to defeat BJP candidates in UP, even if it meant supporting SP-BSP alliance candidates in places where Congress candidates won’t fare better. This essentially means that Congress would readily volunteer to get into a post-poll alliance with the Mahagathbandhan to ensure that BJP is defeated in the elections.

In the interview, Rahul Gandhi’s assertions confirmed that his sister’s earlier comment that Congress’ sole purpose of fielding candidates across Uttar Pradesh is to weaken the prospect of BJP in the state.

Apart from this, Rahul Gandhi also ‘guaranteed’ to the NDTV scribe that PM Narendra Modi will not be becoming the Prime Minister once again. He stated that according to the Congress party sources BJP is not forming the government at the centre.

The ever changing number of surgical strikes Congress leaders claim UPA had conducted

Congress’ response to the Surgical Strikes conducted by the Narendra Modi government has been rather comical. After initially questioning the strikes itself and then demanding evidence for it, the party went on to claim that it was not a big deal as the UPA had conducted similar military operations during its regime as well.

On Thursday, Rajiv Shukla claimed that the UPA government had conducted not one or two but half a dozen surgical strikes during its time.

The claim is quite comical as the number, like many other figures touted by the Congress party, keeps changing at a remarkable frequency. Congress President Rahul Gandhi, for instance, had claimed that the UPA had conducted 3 surgical strikes. Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala had quoted the same figure in a 2016 press conference. Former Union Defense Minister A.K. Antony, too, quoted the same figure.

In March, earlier this year, the Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot, had claimed the UPA had conducted 15 Surgical Strikes. Yes, 15.

Mani Shankar Aiyar, who has acquired a legendary status owing to his flamboyant comments that have played a great role in getting Narendra Modi elected and helping the BJP electorally, claimed in 2016 right after the Surgical Strikes that the UPA had conducted 4 of them.

The most hilarious, perhaps, was Kamal Nath, now the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh who claimed that he wasn’t aware of how many Surgical Strikes the UPA had conducted but was very sure that the biggest did take place under the UPA.

It might seem sensible enough to gather everyone around a table and decide upon the details of a particular fictional story before ordering everyone to peddle the same false narrative. But, of course, as we are well aware, Congress President Rahul Gandhi isn’t particularly famous for his great intellect. Therefore, such goof-ups appear par for the course. It’s no wonder then that it has become a joke on social media that the UPA government conducted surgical and air strikes without informing the Army or the Air Force themselves.

The Director-General of Military Operations (DGMO) in its reply to an RTI application during May, last year, had stated that there is no proof of any surgical strikes before September 29, 2016, responding to a specific question about whether surgical strikes had been carried out between 2004 and 2014.

India to ask for Pakistan to be blacklisted by terror finance watchdog FATF

India will ask the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to put Pakistan on a blacklist of countries that fail to meet international standards in stopping financial crime, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said on Thursday.

FATF is a global money laundering and terror finance watchdog. It already has placed Pakistan in its grey list for failing to curb money laundering and terror financing.

Jaitley told reporters, “We want Pakistan downgraded on the FATF list”. India would make the request when the FATF meets in mid-May.

This comes after India had a major diplomatic victory with Masood Azhar be declared as a global terrorist in the United Nations Sanctions List. Masood Azhar is the leader of the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) which had claimed responsibility for the Pulwama attacks. Before this, China had repeatedly blocked efforts to sanction Azhar.

“A step in the right direction to demonstrate the international community’s resolve to fight against terrorism and its enablers,” said the foreign ministry welcoming the sanction of Azhar.

Jaitley said that the core issue is that Azhar has been declared as an international terrorist for which he and his country would have to face the ramifications of that.

In February, the FATF had decided to keep Pakistan in the greylist for now and has given time until October to avoid getting blacklisted. FATF had said that Pakistan “does not demonstrate a proper understanding” of terrorism financing risks posed by militant groups, including the JeM.

Two months ago, Pakistan Finance Minister Asad Umar had requested FATF to remove India from its Asia-Pacific co-chair for the well-known “animosity between two countries” and “unbiased review process”.

If Pakistan is placed in FATF blacklist, it will be a big blow to Pakistan’s economy, as it will be harder for foreign investors and companies to do business in the country. FATF calls for enhanced due diligence and countermeasures in dealing with blacklisted countries, which increases the cost of doing business with such a counrty.
