Two weeks after a video of Humayun Kabir threatening the Hindu community went viral on social media, the Election Commission of India (ECI) condemned the remarks of the Trinamool Congress MLA from Murshidabad on Saturday (18th May).
As per reports, Kabir had responded to a show-cause notice that was issued by the ECI on 10th May this year. He alleged that his comments were taken in isolation and presented as a threat.
Despite Kabir’s attempt to downplay his anti-Hindu rhetoric, the nodal election body found that his comments violated the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).
The Election Commission has condemned the remarks of the TMC leader and censored him. It must be mentioned that the nodal election body received a complaint against Humayun Kabir on 2nd May this year.
The Background of the Controversy
Earlier this month, Kabir created a massive stir by threatening to drown BJP workers and Hindus in the Bhagirathi river within 2 hours. He said that there are only 30% Hindus in Murshidabad, while the rest 70% are Muslims.
The Bharatpur MLA made the controversial comments while addressing a party’s booth workers meeting at Shaktipur in Murshidabad.
At the booth workers sammelan at Shaktipur, TMC’s Bharatpur MLA Humayun Kabir said:
Quote
If I can't throw BJP into the Bhagirathi river within 2 hours, will leave politics. I will not let you guys stay in the Shaktipur (most Hindus in this area are refugees, who fled from… pic.twitter.com/EMRTFMg26T
— Amit Malviya (मोदी का परिवार) (@amitmalviya) May 2, 2024
In the video of the speech, he could be heard saying, “I will leave politics if I don’t drown you people (referring to BJP workers and Hindus) in the Bhagirathi River within two hours. I will not let you people stay in the Shaktipur. You are 30 per cent people, we are also 70 per cent here. If you think that you will demolish the mosque of Kazipada and the rest of the Muslims will sit back and relax. Then, I want to tell the BJP that this will never happen.”
On Saturday, 18th May, Karnataka Police arrested X user MumbaichaDon aka Bhiku Mhatre from his house in Goa over the now-deleted post on social media against the Congress manifesto. In the post, Bhiku Mhatre alleged that the Congress “wants to take away wealth from Hindus and distribute it to Muslims as it hates Hindus”.
The post was made on 22nd April. In the post, he wrote, “Throw this in the face of Every Liberal & Every Piddi who was arguing that Congress Manifesto doesn’t mention “Mu$£ims” specifically & it includes SC/STs Also. CONgress WANTS TO TAKE AWAY WEALTH FROM HINDUS & DISTRIBUTING TO MU$£IMS “ONLY” AS IT HATES HINDUS INCL. SC/STs.” The post was later deleted. Though Congress did not speak directly about wealth distribution in its manifesto, its leader Rahul Gandhi has spoken openly about it and there are hints that appears to be in sync with the plan of wealth distribution.
A complaint against the X user was filed by J Saravanan, a Congress worker from Bengaluru on 29th April. Based on his complaint, cyber crime police registered an FIR against the X user under sections 153(a) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 66(C) of the Information Technology Act. OpIndia accessed a copy of the FIR. In his complaint, Jayapalan said that an unknown person who goes by the handle MumbaichaDon on social media platform X posted the said post and claimed that it was done with the evil intention of creating hatred and unrest in the society and bringing a bad name to the Congress Party.

A court order was obtained by Karnataka police, forcing X to reveal the information about the X user. A screenshot of the email from X’s legal department to the X user was shared on the social media platform hours before the arrest. In the email, X said that they were obliged to share the information because of the court order and suggested the X user to seek legal help.
So it seems CONgress wants to intimidate me for speaking Truth. I'm ready to fight against any injustice & will take full Judicial Course even if that means approaching Highest Court, as I have never written anything which may be called as inflammatory or communal.

Following the arrest, Bhiku Mhatre’s son Nagesh Naik wrote on X, “My father @MumbaichaDon has been arrested by @DgpKarnataka @CPBlr @BlrCityPolice A mail was sent by TWITTER and suddenly in the evening the Police showed up at the doorstep and took away my father! FIR is NOT pertinent! #ReleaseBhikuMhatre.”
Bharatiya Janata Party leaders came out in support of the X user and promised to provide legal assistance. BJP leader and MP from Karnataka, Tejasvi Surya said, “This is blatant abuse of power by Karnataka Congress Govt. We will fight this, both inside courts and outside.”

PM Modi criticising Congress Manifesto, and Congress’ idea of minorities
On 21st April, PM Modi warned that the Congress Party plans to take away the wealth of poor families and would not even leave the Mangalsutra of married women. Evidently, Congress, left, liberals and Islamists got rattled by PM Modi’s statement and started calling it fearmongering, divisive politics and more. Notably, PM Modi pointed out that it was written in the manifesto that the Congress Party would do all these things.
First of all, it is essential to note that since former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh claimed minorities, particularly Muslims, have the first right to the resources of the country, the Congress Party has faced a lot of backlash. Singh’s statement from 2006 comes back to haunt the grand old party more often than it can digest. The statement was repeated in 2009.
To understand Congress’s plan, we have to go back to Singh’s 2006 statement again. He had said, “We will have to devise innovative plans to ensure that minorities, particularly the Muslim minority, are empowered to share equitably in the fruits of development. They must have the first claim on resources.” Congress thrived on appeasement politics for decades. From the Waqf Board to the Places of Worship Act or flipping the Supreme Court’s decision in the Triple Talaq matter by Rajiv Gandhi, the grand old party left no stone unturned to make the policies Muslim-centric.
Congress promised to ‘Defend the Constitution’ in the manifesto
While MumbaichaDon was arrested by the Karnataka police under the Congress-led government in the state for speaking ill about the grand old party’s manifesto, the arrest itself is the death of irony 1000 times. There is a section in the manifesto titled “Defending The Constitution” on Page 21 of the Congress Manifesto whose sub-section 16 speaks against the “arbitrary and indiscriminate arrests”. It reads, “We promise to put an end to the weaponisation of laws, arbitrary searches, seizures and attachments, arbitrary and indiscriminate arrests, third-degree methods, prolonged custody, custodial deaths, and bulldozer justice.”
Congress talk of ending fascism when they’re exhibiting dictatorial tendencies with such arrests
In the sub-section 5 of the same section of the Congress manifesto, the party talked removing provisions that restrict freedom of speech and expression and violate the right to privacy. Notably, Karnataka police not only got a court order to get the X user’s address but according to some social media posts, they used his cell location to find the address.
Congress claims it will end fascism which is deeply ironic considering the arrest of X user MumbaichaDon by the Karnataka police. The X user merely criticised their manifesto and the arrest highlighted how there is a stark difference between what Congress says and what it preaches. The Congress manifesto, which vows to defend the Constitution and end arbitrary arrests, rings hollow when juxtaposed with their intolerance towards dissent. With the arrest, Congress has revealed their tyrannical tendencies, undermining their proclaimed commitment to freedom and democracy. In the sub-section 5 of the same section, talked about reviewing the Telecommunications Act, of 2023 and removing provisions that restrict freedom of speech and expression and violate the right to privacy.
In another tragic blow to girls’ education in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa amidst the ongoing wave of terrorism, terrorists have targeted a girls’ school in the Wana tehsil of South Waziristan, as reported by Geo News.
The north-western region of the country has been plagued by terror attacks since mid-2021, with several girls’ schools in KP districts being targeted.
The Sofia Noor School, established with support from the Wana Welfare Association to educate girls in the remote and underdeveloped district, fell victim to the bombing just weeks after its inception.
This attack follows closely on the heels of the destruction of another school in the southern districts merely eight days prior, according to Geo News.
On May 9, the Islamia Girls School in Sheva town, North Waziristan, was also bombed, fortunately resulting in no casualties. The bombing of the school has instilled fear among the province’s residents, who have been witnessing frequent attacks on educational institutions for years.
Reports indicate that construction was ongoing in some sections of the Sofia Noor School when the blast occurred around 3 am, causing damage to a portion of the building.
Although no casualties were reported, there have been claims on social media suggesting that the school’s administration received extortion letters. However, locals have vehemently denied these allegations.
In KP, hundreds of schools faced bombings, arson, or attacks with automatic weapons over a decade ago. While the situation improved after police and security forces launched operations, the recent attacks on schools in Waziristan have reignited concerns among the local population, Geo News reported.

In due course, Saifuddin tricked me into visiting Mumbai for a medical consultation, and I was admitted to a hospital where the doctors secretly aborted the five-month-old fetus.”
She mentioned that she was brought to the culprit’s house in Karnataka’s Beedar where she was subjected to physical and psychological abuse by his elder brother, fiancee Monika, and other family members. The police have registered a case for dowry-related harassment against the offenders, including Saifuddin, who is still missing, based on Station House Officer (SHO) Gudamba NK Srivastava.

The victim revealed, “Suddenly, a bunch of people appeared from behind me and began asking me why I was taking pictures of the place. Before I could reply, five to seven unidentified males began punching me and hurled derogatory words to issue me death threats.” Meanwhile, someone from the mob shouted at Farhan and Faisal and asked them to snatch the mobile and documents from his hand and they took his phone during the scuffle. Sandeep added, “I told them that I was a teacher but they didn’t listen to me and continue to beat me.” On the other hand, government documents were stolen from his hand and the people in the crowd were watching silently like mute spectators. Afterwards, he left and went straight to the police station.

In a shocking incident in Bisfi in Bihar’s Madhubani district, miscreants from the Muslim community assaulted villagers who hail from the Maha Dalit community, Ram Samaj, after a local asked the miscreants to not consume intoxicants. The incident reportedly took place on Thursday night (16th May). Several individuals have suffered injuries in the violent attack and it is also alleged that the accused hurled casteist abuses and misbehaved with the women of the victim’s community.
According to a Dainik Bhaskar report, Sarwan Kumar Ram, a resident of Usothu Dih village, and his family members were brutally assaulted by local miscreants who hail from the Muslim community. The accused reportedly assaulted the victim and his family members after he asked some of the Muslim youth to not consume intoxicants.
The injured victim, Sarwan Kumar Ram has filed a complaint at Bisfi Police Station regarding this incident. In the FIR, the victim stated that some young from the Muslim community were consuming intoxicants on Thursday evening. After a lot of convincing, they agreed not to consume intoxicants. However, after some time, accused Mohd. Faiyaz, Mohd. Gufran, Tufail, and eight others reached his house. The accused carried with them sticks and started assaulting the victim and hurled casteist slurs.
When his father intervened to save his son, the accused also attacked him with knives. The FIR also states that the miscreants also misbehaved with the women of the victim’s community.
Police Station Head Avinash Kumar said that based on the application, an FIR will be registered and further action will be taken.
Speaking with OpIndia, Bisfi MLA Haribhushan Thakur ‘Bachol’ demanded strict action in this matter. He said that the victims hail from the Maha Dalit, Ram Samaj and they were beaten mercilessly on 16th May. He noted that there is a large Muslim population in the Bisfi region and miscreants from the Muslim community often disrupt their functions and without any reason assault and threaten the Hindu houses which are very small in number.
He said, “No arrests have been made so far in this incident. We demand strict action against the culprits in this matter.”
Bisfi MLA added that the miscreants from the Muslim community often threaten and intimidate Hindus to transfer lands and property to their name and also leave the village.
According to the demographic, Muslims constitute around 35% of Bisfi, and in around 12 Panchayats their population is around 70%. Hindus in the area said that Muslims regularly disturb them when they play DJ systems at functions like weddings. They force the Hindu families to not play music at such events, several villagers said.
In a major snub to its I.N.D.I. alliance partner, the Aam Aadmi Party, several media reports have indicated that the Congress party has not invited AAP Supremo Arvind Kejriwal to Rahul Gandhi’s rally in Delhi on Saturday, 18th May. Notably, while AAP and Congress are jointly contesting under the I.N.D.I. alliance against the BJP for 7 Lok Sabha seats in the national capital, reports suggest that discontent is brewing within the Congress party against its alliance partner, AAP.
According to reports, I.N.D.I. alliance leaders, who hardly held joint rallies or press conferences during the first three phases of the Lok Sabha elections, recently changed their stance to show unity and appeal to their committed voter base to vote for the alliance candidates. On 17th May, Rahul Gandhi joined Samajwadi Party Supremo Akhilesh Yadav in Rae Bareli and Amethi. However, reports suggest that discontent is simmering among alliance partners, particularly against the Aam Aadmi Party, which has faced backlash after a close aide of AAP Supremo and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, Bibhav Kumar, assaulted one of its party MPs inside the latter’s residence.
Out on interim bail, Arvind Kejriwal was recently seen alongside alliance leaders Sharad Pawar, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Uddhav Thackeray, among others, on the podium at a joint I.N.D.I. alliance rally in Mumbai. However, AAP, considered a better-poised regional player in Delhi, has reportedly not got an invite to Rahul Gandhi’s rally in Delhi on 18th May. Incidentally, when Rahul Gandhi will hold a rally in Ashok Vihar, Delhi, AAP Supremo Kejriwal will be campaigning for Aam Aadmi Party candidates in Delhi.
This development comes at a time when Bibhav Kumar, a close aide of Arvind Kejriwal, has been arrested from the Delhi CM’s residence based on an FIR filed by AAP Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal. However, Congress has refuted reports of discontent or that it is distancing itself from the AAP, claiming that Rahul Gandhi’s rally is not a joint rally.
Delhi Congress unit and several Congress leaders demand an investigation into Swati Maliwal’s allegation
Additionally, the Congress Party’s Delhi unit has also sought an investigation into Swati Maliwal’s allegations and demanded strict action against the accused. Making his first statement in the case, Delhi Congress’s interim president Devender Yadav said, “The FIR was registered today and Swati Maliwal has given her statement. There should be proper investigation in the case and strict action should be taken against the person responsible for it.”
Yadav added that the Congress stand is very clear on such issues and it stood by any woman who was subjected to atrocities and misconduct.
“Clarity will emerge only after the investigation. But our stand is very clear. Swati Maliwal ji is a Rajya Sabha member, but even if an ordinary woman is harassed or misbehaved with, it will not be tolerated,” the Interim Delhi Congress President Yadav added.
Additionally, addressing a press conference on Friday, West Bengal Congress chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury also stated that a strict probe must be conducted in the Swati Maliwal assault case.
Chowdhury said, “This is a serious offence that should not have happened. Any person, whether Minister or not, does not have the right to assault a woman, regardless of the fact she is an MP, MLA or not.”
He added, “Strict action should be taken against this. The guilty one should be arrested, interrogated, and should be brought to justice.”
A day earlier, on Thursday (16th May), Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had expressed solidarity with Maliwal. Additionally, the party’s women functionaries in Delhi echoed her remarks.
Speaking to ANI, Vadra had said, “If any atrocity happens to any woman anywhere, we stand with the woman. I always stand with women—irrespective of which party they belong to.” She, however, dubbed it an internal matter of the AAP stating, “AAP will discuss among themselves and make a decision. It is up to them.”
Furthermore, AAP has exacerbated the woes of the I.N.D.I. alliance, which has been grappling with its own insurmountable challenges. It has dragged the alliance down on two crucial issues dominating the polls – corruption and women’s safety, thus exacerbating the political crisis for the alliance as a whole. Its leaders have been facing the heat and mounting criticism for sharing the stage with AAP leaders at a time when the latter has been deflecting questions and shifting vicarious liability for AAP’s misdeeds onto its alliance partners.
AAP has caused trouble for the alliance by casting a pall over its campaign, incessantly stirring major controversies ahead of the remaining phases of polling for the Lok Sabha 2024 elections. It has forced alliance leaders to spend their energy on defusing the controversies stirred by AAP, especially following Kejriwal’s release from jail. This has prompted several political pundits and supporters of the I.N.D.I. alliance to suggest that the AAP leader might have garnered more sympathy votes had he remained in jail and is becoming a liability for the alliance after getting Interim bail for campaigning.
The India Alliance regrets including Kejriwal, who became their biggest liability and put them on the defensive. #Kejriwal misled and deceived them. Despite being in the alliance, AAP is fighting against Congress in Punjab.@aajtak@IndiaToday@PTI_News@RahulGandhi@rahulkanwal
Apart from this, after the completion of elections for all Lok Sabha seats in the Southern belt, AAP is the only major alliance partner that is both in alliance with Congress and simultaneously fighting against them in Punjab, thus undoing its efforts to maintain consistency on major issues like corruption, women’s safety, and the governance model of their alliance partners.
On Saturday (18th May), the three Hindu temples were desecrated by unidentified miscreants in Dhupguri in the Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal.
In a tweet, the Bengal unit of the BJP shared visuals of the vandalism and wrote, “Shocking and outrageous attack on Hindu temples in Dupguri, Jalpaiguri, West Bengal! Extremists have desecrated 3 temples, including Maa Durga Mandir and Graha Raja Shani Maharaj Mandir.”
“This violent act is a direct consequence of TMC’s relentless appeasement politics, which perpetually endangers the Hindu community. Local residents are rightfully protesting against this blatant aggression. We demand immediate and uncompromising justice!” it emphasised.

The local Hindus are protesting against the incident and have blocked a highway, demanding strict action against the accused.
In a statement, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad spokesperson said, “The entire Hindu community is angry against the vandalism of four temples near the college last night (17-18 May) in Dhupguri under Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal and the indifference of the local government administration on it.”
“It is reported that two Durga temples, one Shiva temple and one Shani temple have been targeted by Jihadis. Despite written complaints by the temple committees, no attacker has been arrested yet,” he added.
“Vishwa Hindu Parishad demands immediate arrest of the culprits and strictest punishment,” he concluded.
