Project Vartak: To counter Chinese aggression, Modi govt goes on overdrive to develop infra, mobile connectivity in border areas of Arunachal Pradesh

For countering Chinese aggression on the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the Union government is carrying out infrastructure development in the border areas of Arunachal Pradesh.

The chief engineer of ‘Project Vartak’, Brig Raman Kumar told ANI that the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is developing and maintaining all road networks in the key border areas of western Assam and western Arunachal Pradesh. “We have national highways, single-lane roads, double-lane roads and other types of roads as well. We want to connect even the far-flung areas of the Tawang district and contribute to the socio-economic development of this area,” he said.

He further informed that two tunnels — the Sela tunnel and the Nechipu tunnel — are under construction as the vehicular movement becomes difficult due to heavy snowfall during winter.

“The Sela tunnel is under construction and is 400 meters below Sela pass. Once the tunnel is completed, people will be able to pass through it even in winter. We are also working on the Nechipu tunnel, near the Nechipu pass. Once they are completed, both military, as well as civilian vehicular movement, would be a lot more smooth. It will boost not just infrastructure in the area but tourism as well,” he further said.

Apart from road connectivity and other infrastructure development works, the government is working to strengthen mobile connectivity in Tawang and other bordering areas of Arunachal Pradesh.

More mobile towers have been installed in Tawang and other border areas of the Tawang district, along the LAC.

On internet connectivity, a resident said, “The mobile and internet connectivity has improved but still it is not up to the mark. There are a lot of disturbances.”
“If we compare from before, the connectivity has improved a lot. Earlier, we were not able to use the internet but now we can even use Facebook and WhatsApp. The government has worked very well in these areas,” another resident said.

On December 13, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh informed the Rajya Sabha that China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) troops tried to transgress the Line of Actual Control in the Yangtse area of Tawang Sector in Arunachal Pradesh and unilaterally change the status quo but they were forced to retreat to their positions due to the timely intervention of Indian troops.

The Defence Minister assured the Upper House that “our forces are committed to protecting our territorial integrity and will continue to thwart any attempt made to alter the status quo”.

China’s fall from grace amid falling GDP growth, Zero Covid policy

China had been praised worldwide for lifting its 60 per cent of population out of poverty, according to reports. However, 2022 marks Beijing’s diminishing stature on the world platform amid its ‘Zero Covid’ policy, human rights violations and falling GDP growth.

Among the world’s 15 most populous developing countries, China has seen the greatest drop in poverty rates. China’s transformation from an agrarian society into the world’s second-largest economy has lifted hundreds of millions of people out of extreme poverty. China was responsible for just over 60 per cent of this decrease. Decades of rapid economic growth in China helped to lift 748.5 million people out of extreme poverty, dropping the country’s poverty rate from 66.3 per cent to just 0.3 per cent, according to reports.

However, as Chinese leader Xi Jinping kicks off his third term as general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), Beijing is reeling under economic stress due to the real estate crisis and zero-Covid policy, deeply affecting its manufacturing units.

China’s gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to grow at 5.5 per cent in 2022, the lowest in more than 30 years.

China’s GDP growth target for 2022 is sharply lower than 8.1 per cent expansion in the economy achieved in 2021.

The annual official growth target was revealed by Premier Li Keqiang in the Government Work Report that was delivered to the opening of the annual session of the National People’s Congress (NPC), the country’s top legislature, on Saturday morning, Global Times reported.

China’s GDP growth target of 5.5 per cent for 2022 was the lowest since 1991. Another closely-watched data was China’s deficit-to-GDP ratio, which was around 2.8 per cent for 2022, according to the Government Work Report.

Moreover, China deferred the scheduled release of its third-quarter economic data sparking immediate speculation of a slowdown in its GDP growth rate.

During the 20th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), no no explanation was given for why the data was not released as planned. Apart from the overall GDP number, the releases were supposed to include the details of monthly industrial output, energy production, fixed asset investment, property investment and sales, retail sales and housing prices, reported The Sydney Morning Herald (SMH).

The obvious conclusion is that the numbers might have embarrassed Xi had they been released even as the Congress was being asked to approve his third term, rubber-stamping an unprecedented extension of his period as party leader.

Also, the International Monetary Fund forecasted growth of 3.2 per cent in China’s economy for 2022. The reasons for why China’s growth rate has slumped are well understood.

The major one is Xi’s harsh ‘Zero Covid’ policy, which has seen near-continuous rolling lockdowns of China’s major cities and industrial hubs. In the second quarter it was a protracted lockdown of Shanghai that was a major factor in the economy’s stagnation, reported SMH.

The property crisis, triggered by Beijing’s imposition of hard limits to property developers’ leverage, has caused an implosion of the developers, a spate of defaults on their debts and a slump in house prices and sales.

There have been spillover effects into other sectors reliant on the property industry and a widespread revolt by mortgagors, who had borrowed to fund purchases of apartments before they were built, now find themselves with debts but no apartments. Local governments that rely on property sales for much of their income are also stressed.

Unemployment among 16 to 24-year-olds is nudging 20 per cent and has more than doubled during Xi’s current five-year term.
Chinese consumers have become cautious, with retail spending slumping and the slowdown in the rest of the world threatening its exports, reported SMH.

For the first time in living memory China’s economy might grow at a lower rate than the rest of the emerging economies. That’s hardly outstanding.

Given all the headwinds China’s economy is facing and Xi’s continuing commitment to stringent responses to Covid outbreaks, it, perhaps, isn’t surprising that anything less than positive news about the state of the economy would be delayed until the

Congress has concluded and his continuing leadership confirmed.

Niels Graham, an assistant director at the GeoEconomics Center, writing in Atlantic Council said that the decisions he makes during this third term risk reducing the Chinese economy by as much as five trillion dollars over the next five years, with potentially devastating effects for global growth.

The economy that greets him today is vastly different from the one that saw him ascend to his role a decade ago. When Xi became China’s leader in 2012, he inherited a nation of newfound wealth growing rapidly. Expanding at an average pace of around 7 per cent a year, the Chinese economy nearly doubled in size over the course of Xi’s first two terms.

Now, the situation is markedly different. For the first time since 1989, China will miss its annual gross domestic product (GDP) growth target, said Graham.

Officially, Beijing points to the sweeping Covid-19 restrictions it has implemented across the country to explain the slowdown, reported Atlantic Council.

Meanwhile, China’s extreme Covid-19 testing policies are projected to give a blow to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by about 1.5 per cent, said media reports.

China has ramped up its testing with the country now requiring nucleic acid tests done within the past 48 hours just to enter public spaces, offices and even schools. However, it is estimated that the testing could cost some 1.7 trillion yuan a year in

China’s major cities alone, or about 1.5 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product.

Moreover, the emotional toll of China’s ‘Zero Covid’ strategy has also taken a toll on the Chinese people. This emotional toll has outweighed everything else. But it is interesting to note that China is still insisting that these stern policies are the only way to go, reported Straits Times.

The world is now more than two years into the pandemic and with this China’s Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests, quarantines and flash lockdowns have almost become a part of “normal” life.

Meanwhile, nothinghas rocked the Chinese society under President Xi Jinping’s leadership to date more than the ‘Zero Covid’ policy which appears to have failed miserably as China is still struggling to cope with the daily rise in cases inside the country, according to Colombo Gazette.

The policy was introduced by the government in view of a resurge in coronavirus cases in China with 1,000 new cases being reported each day. The Covid policy has, however, led to fear, anger, and confusion among Chinese citizens caused by repeated lockdowns in vast areas.

The curbs were even more harsh and stringent in Xinjiang where residents kept pleading for food during the lockdown and in Tibetan capital Lhasa, angry crowds seen protesting in the streets after being at home for more than 90 days.

Moreover, after the severe Covid outbreak in August and September, Chinese officials imposed strict lockdowns in Xinjiang which resulted in some deaths of Uyghurs from starvation as well as lack of medical care, as per Radio Free Asia.

The local officials also detained 600 Uyghurs from a village in Ghulja (Yining) in the northern part of Xinjiang after they protested the lockdown that has made the lives of locals miserable.

Also, China made a mess of alleged human rights violations resulting in loss of respect among the world. They are suspicious of China over the human rights violations of Uyghurs in its Xinjiang region.

Xinjiang have long faced prejudice and persecution. Beijing launched policies of assimilation and strict police control on the pretext of fighting terrorism and secession. Chinese authorities allegedly suppressed Uyghur calls for autonomy and their religious expressions.

These policies have in recent years developed into a program of ethnic and religious persecution. More than one million Uyghurs and other Turkic minorities are held in more than 300 detention facilities, while twice as many are reportedly receiving “re-education”.

Many people have experienced torture and forced labour in detention. Outside the detention facilities, Chinese authorities have imposed a pervasive system of mass surveillance, controls on movement, arbitrary arrest and enforced disappearance, cultural and religious erasure, and family separation on Turkic Muslims.

Defence Ministry to discuss Indian Army proposal for acquiring 354 ‘Zorawar’ light tanks for deployment on the China border

0

The Defence Ministry will take up an important Army proposal for the development of light tanks for deployment on the China border at a meeting scheduled to be held later this week.

The high-level meeting of the Defence Ministry will discuss the proposal for buying 354 of these tanks under Make in India, government sources told ANI. The Indian Army has issued specifications for its future light tank which has been named ‘Zorawar’.

The tank has been named after the legendary general who led multiple successful victories in Tibet which is now controlled by the Chinese Army.

Army officials said that to overcome the limitations faced by medium battle tanks and equip the Indian Army for all contingencies in High Altitude Areas (HAA), marginal terrain and island territories besides its utilisation in the plains, semi-deserts and deserts, it is now important to induct light tanks.

The Indian Army had to induct a considerable number of T-72 and T-90 tanks in operational areas, gaining tactical surprise over the adversary and thereby forcing the adversary on a back foot.

“However, the tanks were primarily designed for operations in plains and desert terrain having their own limitations when employed in high altitude Areas. They face a similar handicap when employed in marginal terrain of Rann of Kutch,” an official said.

Congress leader and Gandhi family loyalist Ajay Rai says Smriti Irani comes to Amethi only for “latke jhatke”, Amethi MP calls out the misogynist comments

Congress leader Ajay Rai courted controversy on Monday, December 19, when he made misogynistic comments about the Amethi Lok Sabha MP and Union minister of Women and Child Development Smriti Irani. Ajay Rai, who is mainly identified as a Gandhi family loyalist, said that the Amethi MP comes to her constituency only to show ‘latke and jhatke’.

During a press interaction, Congress leader Rai said, “Most of the factories in Amethi are on the verge of closure. Half of the factories in Jagdishpur Industrial Area are lying shut. Smriti Irani comes, shows ‘latka-jhatka’, and leaves.”

Rai further added that Amethi has always been a Gandhi family bastion and that they will ask a Gandhi family member to fight from there in 2024.

In response, Amethi MP Smriti Irani, who is known for giving back as good as she gets, called out the misogynist comments of Ajay Rai and dared Rahul Gandhi to fight from Amethi during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

In her tweet, Irani asked Rahul Gandhi whether she should consider it confirmed that Rahul Gandhi will fight from Amethi in 2024. Notably, Rahul Gandhi chose to fight from Wayanad in addition to Amethi in 2019, and he went on to lose from Amethi to Smriti Irani.

BJP also took exception to the remarks of Ajay Rai as party spokesperson Anand Dubey said, “Such a remark from a leader of the party which gave the woman prime minister to the nation, is definitely shameful”.

Amethi was considered to be the safest seat for the first family of Congress till 2019 along with Rae Bareli, however, Smriti Irani staged a huge upset when she defeated the Nehru-Gandhi family’s scion Rahul Gandhi in the last Lok Sabha election. Sensing defeat ahead of the elections, Rahul Gandhi chose to fight from Wayanad in Kerala as well along with Amethi.

UP: FIR against SRK fans for attacking Yogi Adityanath, Sadhavi Prachi, and others with morphed pictures from the ‘Besharam Rang’ song

The Meerut Police on Monday took to Twitter to inform that it has taken cognisance of the morphed photos posted by Shah Rukh Khan fans on social media that mocked UP CM Yogi Adityanath, Sadhavi Prachi, and others. The police directed the cyber cell of Meerut to initiate action in the matter.

The police were responding to a tweet posted by a user Chaudhary Avkush Singh. Singh had shared two pictures posted by Shah Rukh Khan fans wherein they had shared morphed versions of the still from the actor’s upcoming movie Pathaan’s song ‘Besharam Rang’, replacing the face of skimpily dressed Deepika Padukone with UP CM Yogi Adityanath and VHP leader Sadhvi Prachi.

The said accounts include @iamJames786 and @AzaarSRK_, and their posts are attached below. Both these accounts have Khan’s photograph as their display picture. The accounts had been deactivated after the Meerut police took cognizance of the social media posts disparaging the UP CM and other political leaders and Hindu monks.

Besides Yogi Adityanath and Sadhvi Prachi, Sanjeev Newar, who runs the popular Twitter account @GemsofBollywood that criticises Bollywood for promoting underage sex, obscenity, rape and molestation of women, and indulging in Islamic religious propaganda, was also targetted by these anonymous fans of Shah Rukh Khan.

The tweets posted by these self-proclaimed Shah Rukh Khan fans were deemed offensive and insulting by many Twitter users, who called for the perpetrators to face harsh punishment.

Lucknow police file FIR against Shah Rukh Khan fans for posting offensive posts mocking UP CM

Taking cognisance of the offensive posts the Lucknow police also filed an FIR against the Twitter handle @AzaarSRK_ for sharing a snippet of the song with Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath’s face in place of Deepika Padukone. The FIR has been registered under Section 295A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 66 of the Information Technology (IT) Act. The cyber team of DGP headquarters is currently investigating the matter.

Bollywood film Pathaan faces backlash

Notably, the song ‘Beshram rang’ from Shah Rukh Khan’s upcoming movie ran into trouble as soon as it was released on December 12. The song featured Deepika Padukone and several other female actors in bikinis and similar bold attire. The dance by the lead actress involves suggestive and erotic movements, while Shahrukh Khan appears shirtless in several scenes.

Besides taking strong objection to the saffron colour bikini Deepika Padukone has donned in the song, Netizens have also been angry with the way obscenity has been shown in the film’s song.

On 14th December 2022, Madhya Pradesh’s home minister Dr Narottam Mishra expressed objection to actress Deepika Padukone’s attire in the song ‘Besharam Rang’ from the film ‘Pathaan’. The minister has advised the director to correct the attire failing to which the film may face troubles in release in Madhya Pradesh.

On December 15, Supreme Court Advocate Vineet Jindal filed a complaint at the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting against actor Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone for the recently released song ‘Besharam Rang‘ of their upcoming film Pathaan.

After calls to ban the movie ‘Pathaan’ rose, the fan army of Shah Rukh Khan on social media, identified by Khan’s photographs used as display pictures, started posting morphed versions of the controversial still from the song, replacing Padukone’s face with Yogi Adityanath and Sadhvi Prachi, among others.

Is there another major Covid wave in China? Experts say millions may die as concerns over new variant rise

0

Amid the news of the Chinese government implementing strict measures, even to the point of violence breaking out in several places, there are concerns now that the world’s most populous country may be facing a major Covid wave.

The Chinese government has not been very transparent about the Covid cases, the origin of the virus from Wuhan’s research lab and the massive quarantine camps which keep appearing in allegedly ‘leaked’ videos on social media.

The BBC quoted epidemiologist Wu Zunyou as saying that this may be the beginning of a ‘first wave’. He has predicted that the second wave will be in late January when mass travel due to the Chinese New Year celebrations will spread infection. The Third wave is likely to hit from late February to mid-March as millions of people return after the holidays, as per Zunyou.

The govt of China reported only 2097 cases on Sunday, but there is a general mistrust around those numbers.

A US-based research organisation named the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) has announced recently that Beijing’s decision to abruptly lift restrictions combating its spread could facilitate a rapid spike and spread of the virus, causing widespread deaths. IHME Director Christopher Murray has stated that about a third of China’s population may get infected and the country may see over 322,000 deaths by April 2023.

Experts have stated that China’s strict lockdown measures may have deprived the population of natural immunity.

There are some claims in social media about hospitals being overwhelmed and mortuaries continuously busy handling recent deaths. But there are no official confirmations.

Eric Feigl Ding, an epidemiologist, has shared that the current infection wave in China may trigger a total shutdown and severely impact global trade.

Over concerns of a new, more infectious variant of the Coronavirus, a report in NPR stated that the current wave is spreading much faster. Yale-based health researcher Xi Chen was quoted as saying the CDC China has predicted 60% of the country’s population to be infected in the next 90 days.

Scientists at China National Health Commission have reportedly estimated that the R number, an indication of the number of people one infected person gives the virus to, for the current variant, is 16. This is higher than all the previous waves of the pandemic globally.

Was Deepika Padukone representing India at the FIFA World Cup trophy unveiling in Qatar as implied by ‘liberals’? Here’s a fact-check

On December 18, Argentina defeated France by 4-2 and won FIFA World Cup. India was not one of the teams participating in the Football World Cup. However, a few Indian celebrities, including Deepika Padukone, Shah Rukh Khan and, a few days back, Ranveer Singh, were seen at the matches. In fact, Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone unveiled the FIFA Trophy before the match.

Many obvious members of the liberal gang jumped in and took the opportunity to mention that Padukone represented India on an international stage. RJ Sayema said, “It’s such a shame that we allow trolling of icons like Deepika Padukone and Shah Rukh Khan back home when they are the ones who are giving us all the pride globally! True national heroes being attacked like this on SM is such a national shame. Why is the system encouraging such low lives?”

Source: Twitter

Notably, a controversy stirred up recently following the launch of the ‘Besharam Rang’ song of the upcoming film Pathaan starrer Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone. Questions were raised over the dresses, style of dancing and more. So much so there were reports of objections raised over the song, alleging that the song was offensive and hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus. This was because Deepika was seen wearing a saffron bikini.

Now, as Deepika was present at FIFA World Cup, those who favoured Khan and Padukone amidst the controversy have started projecting her presence on the stage as a ‘pride moment for India’.

Bolta Hindustan ‘journalist’ Puneet Kumar Singh posted a photo of Deepika and SRK at the FIFA World Cup and asked if people would start boycotting football.

Source: Twitter

Secretary and Media panellist, Uttarakhand Congress, Pankaj Kshetri said, “Two days back, Deepika Padukone was ‘hurting country and religion’ in Godi Media. Today she is making the country proud. Shameless Godi Media. Are you happy now Dr Narottam Misra Ji?”

Leader of Opposition, Karnataka Legislative Council Hariprasad BK, said, “Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone & her ‘objectionable’ clothes in Pathaan is just a pawn in the sinister plans of the Sanghis. The real target is the upcoming elections Since there are no developmental works to show. Such issues are highlighted ably supported by the Godi media.”

Source: Twitter

Rohini Singh, a ‘journalist’ with the far-left propaganda portal The Wire, also weighed in on the controversy, pompously claiming the world sees India through Deepika Padukone and Shah Rukh Khan. Singh shared the picture of Deepika Padukone unveiling the FIFA world cup to insinuate that she represented India at the football tournament finals.

Salar-e-hind ‘journalist’ Wasiuddin Siddiqui said, “King Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone are making India and Bollywood proud at FIFA. Since yesterday, snakes have been rolling on the chest of the trolls.”

Even Pakistanis took a dig over the issue. Pakistani Twitter user Sehar Shinwari said, “Irony died a thousand deaths seeing the same Sanghis who once declared Deepika Padukone an anti-national and harassed her while she was going somewhere on the road are now taking pride that she was invited as a special guest in FIFA world cup final.”

Did Deepika represent India at FIFA?

It is no doubt a big moment for Deepika Padukone at a personal level, but it is a little strange to think why FIFA would invite a celebrity to the final match of the FIFA World Cup who is from a country that was not among the participants. Well, Deepika Padukone was not there to represent India, but she was representing Louis Vuitton, a luxury brand for which Padukone is the brand ambassador. In fact, Padukone is the first Indian to become a brand ambassador of Louis Vuitton. She joined LV as its brand ambassador in May 2022.

The brand also published a video on December 19 of Deepika getting ready to unveil the FIFA Trophy that was presented in a custom-made LV luxury trunk book. The social media post by the brand read, “A day at the FIFA World Cup 2022 Final with Deepika Padukone. The House Ambassador got ready with Louis Vuitton before revealing the ultimate prize in football. Discover Maison’s tradition of creating bespoke trophy trunks.”

It is also the reason Deepika was not dressed in Indian attire but was wearing LV from head to toe. There were reports that the netizens expressed their dismay over the dress Deepika chose to wear for the ceremony. However, they were not aware that a brand ambassador had to wear the dress chosen by the brand for the ceremony.

Verdict: Deepika Padukone was not at FIFA to represent India but to represent the luxury brand Louis Vuitton.

Qatar 2022: Celebrations after Argentina win turn violent in Kerala, three stabbed and several cops injured

0

On December 18, after Argentina won against France in the FIFA World Cup 2022 final in Qatar, several incidents of clashes were reported from various parts of Kerala. According to reports, clashes broke out during the victory celebrations that the Argentinian fans were carrying out in various parts of the state after Lionel Messi-led Argentina defeated defending champions France in the penalty shootout.

According to the police, three people were stabbed in Kerala’s Kannur after an altercation broke out between Argentina and Brazil fans on Sunday night. In the incident, one person was seriously injured and is admitted to the hospital while six persons were arrested.

In a separate incident, three police personnel were injured in Kochi’s Kaloor after they tried to control a victory procession on bikes by a group of Argentinian fans who were allegedly drunk. As per the Police, twenty people were arrested in connection with the incident, and their vehicles were seized.

Meanwhile, a video, showing a policeman being beaten and dragged by a group of men is doing the rounds on social media. The incident reportedly happened near Kochi’s Kaloor Stadium Junction, where the civil police officer was assaulted when he requested fans to stop obstructing traffic.

According to reports, a group of Argentinian fans was obstructing traffic as they were celebrating their victory when the policeman approached them and asked them to clear the way. The angry football enthusiasts attacked him and dragged him across the road.

Similarly, in Thiruvananthapuram, a sub-inspector was injured when he tried to control victory celebrations in Pozhiyoor. According to reports, the police officer was kicked and dragged by a frenzied crowd when he tried to pacify some who were in an inebriated state during the celebrations. Police have detained five people in connection with the incident.

According to a report by India Today, five people in Kerala’s Kannur district stabbed a 24-year-old youth named Anurag while he was returning home after watching the final match between Argentina and France.

As per sources speaking to India Today, Anurag was stabbed after a brawl erupted during the screening of the match in Palliyamoola’s Nethaji Arts and Sports Club.

Anurag was critically injured and is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in Kannur. His friends who tried to intervene were also hit on the head with a cricket stump. An FIR has been filed under relevant sections of the IPC.

In another incident of violence in Kottarakkara, three people were injured in an altercation during a celebration post the match.

In an incident in Kollam, an 18-year-old youth collapsed and died during a victory celebration after Argentina’s victory.

Argentina won the FIFA World Cup

Argentina won the FIFA World Cup for the third time in history. The first World Cup victory came in 1978 when Mario Kempes led them to a victory, later in 1986, Argentina won the cup for the second time as Maradona dominated the entire tournament. After 36 years, Lionel Messi, the greatest player of all time, emulated Maradona as he pushed Argentina to a World Cup trophy.

EAM S Jaishankar pulls up Rahul Gandhi over his ‘Chinese troops beating Indian soldiers’ remark

0

External affairs minister S Jaishankar on Monday, while reacting to the Opposition’s walkout in the Rajya Sabha after the Chair rejected demands for a debate on Chinese incursion on the borders, said that India’s jawans should not be criticised directly or indirectly.

“Our soldiers are standing at a height of 13,000 feet in Yangtse and guarding our border. They should be respected and appreciated,” Jaishankar said while speaking in Lok Sabha during the Winter Session of Parliament. Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday rejected all nine notices under rule 267 saying they were not in order.

Reacting to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s comment on the Indian and Chinese troops clash in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang recently, the minister said that the word “pitai” should not be used for our jawans.

“We have no problem with political criticism but we should not disrespect our jawans. I have heard that my own understanding needs to be deepened. When I see who is giving the advice I can only bow and respect. The word ‘pitai’ should not be used for our jawans,” Jaishankar hit out at Rahul Gandhi without naming him.

Rahul Gandhi, earlier on Friday while commenting on the recent faceoff between India and China had said that the Foreign Minister should “deepen” his understanding.

“We should understand what is happening. The External Affairs Minister keeps giving statements, but he should deepen his understanding,” Gandhi had said at a press conference in Jaipur on Friday during his “Bharat Jodo Yatra”.

Flagging a “clear threat from China” amid the ongoing border row, Gandhi also had claimed that the neighbouring country is “preparing for war” and alleged that the Centre is “hiding and not accepting it”.

In an apparent reference to the recent faceoff between the Indian and Chinese soldiers in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang sector on December 9, Gandhi said that China is making an “offensive preparation on the side of Ladakh and Arunachal” while the Indian government “is in slumber”.

He then went on to say that Indian jawans in Arunachal Pradesh are being “thrashed up” by the Chinese Army troops.

“The ones who captured 2,000 sq km of India and killed 20 Indian soldiers, and are thrashing our soldiers in Arunachal Pradesh,” Gandhi had said.

Meanwhile today, the External Affairs minister further added, “If we were indifferent to China then who sent the Indian Army to the border? If we were indifferent to China then why are we pressuring China for de-escalation and disengagement today? Why are we saying publicly that our relations are not normal?”
