Neeraj Chopra creates history, wins silver medal at World Athletics Championships

On July 24, India’s Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra won the silver media at the finals of the men’s javelin throw at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon. His best throw was 88.13 meters, which he had registered in the fourth attempt. Anderson Peters of Grenada won the gold with the best throw of 90.54 meters, and Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic won bronze with a best throw of 88.09 meters.

With this medal, Chopra became the first Indian man and second India to win a medal at World Athletics Championships. Before him, long jumper Anju Bobby George had won a bronze medal in 2003.

Chopra’s first attempt was a foul, and he registered 82.39 meters in the second attempt. In the third attempt, he threw 86.37 meters, followed by 88.13 meters in the fourth attempt, which put him up for the silver medal. Notably, he had topped the Group A qualification round. He qualified for the finals with 88.39 meters, his third career-best throw.

In a statement, Chopra said, “While conditions were not good & the wind speed was too high, I was confident I would perform well. I am satisfied with the result, I am happy I was able to win a medal for my country. The competition was tough, competitors were throwing on a good average, and it became challenging. I learned a lot today. The hunger for gold will continue. But I have to believe we cannot get gold each time. I will do what I can, focus and concentrate on my training.”

He added, “It might have looked easy but Anderson must have put in huge effort to cross 90 metres. He is world lead this year, throwing very good throws, several above 90 meters. I am happy he has worked so hard. This is good for me too, I have good competition. I didn’t feel pressured by the fact that I am an Olympic champion. I believed in myself even after the third throw. I made a comeback and won silver, it felt good. I would try to change the colour of the medal next time.”

PM Modi and others congratulated Chopra

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Neeraj and wrote, “A great accomplishment by one of our most distinguished athletes! Congratulations to Neeraj Chopra on winning a historic Silver medal at the #WorldChampionships. This is a special moment for Indian sports. Best wishes to Neeraj for his upcoming endeavours.”

Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur said, “Neeraj Chopra continues his winning streak! Wins silver in Men’s javelin throw at @/WCHoregon22 with his best throw of 88.13m, becoming the 1st Indian male and 2nd Indian to win a medal at the World Championships! Neeraj has now won medal at every Global event!”

Friends and family broke into celebrations to celebrate Neeraj Chopra’s achievement.

Neeraj had won the maiden gold for Indian athletics in Tokyo Olympics last year. After shooter Abhivan Bindra, who had won gold in 2008 in Beijing Olympics, Neeraj was the second Indian to win an individual gold in the games.

Amritsar airport security nabs passenger Md Danish for molesting IndiGo air hostess

On Saturday (July 23), the security deployed at the Amritsar airport nabbed a passenger for molesting an air hostess onboard a flight.

As per reports, the accused was identified as Mohammed Danish. A resident of Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, Danish had boarded an IndiGo flight (6E 6075) from Lucknow at 6:15 am.

The flight was bound for Srinagar with a 1-hour halt in Amritsar. During the journey, the passenger got into a heated argument with an air hostess and then resorted to sexually inappropriate behaviour.

When things turned ugly, the victim notified the Amritsar control room about the matter. When the flight landed at the Sri Guru Ramdas Ji International airport, security officials barged into the flight and nabbed Danish.

An official complaint was filed against the accused with Amritsar Airport Sub Inspector Pargat Singh, following which a case was registered against the accused by the airport police under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 509 (intending to insult the modesty of any woman).

A probe was soon initiated into the incident. Given that IPC Section 509 is a bailable offence, Danish was soon released on bail. Owing to the chaos that transpired at the airport, the Srinagar-bound flight was delayed for about 15 minutes.

WHO declares monkeypox outbreak a global health emergency

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Saturday declared the alarming rise of monkeypox cases in more than 70 countries around the world an “extraordinary” situation and declared it as a global emergency,

The rare designation means the WHO considers the scale of the current outbreak as an ominous enough threat to global health and one that warrants a coordinated international response to prevent the virus from spreading further and potentially precipitating into a pandemic.

Although the declaration does not impose mandates on national governments, it serves as an urgent call for action to the member states toward an outbreak that is on its march to becoming a pandemic. Moreover, WHO cannot impose mandates on member states and are required to report events that pose a threat to global health.

While monkeypox has been prevalent in several parts of Africa for decades, it has, so far, not been known to spur infections beyond the continent until May, when health authorities detected dozens of cases across Europe, North America and other places.

However, the declaration of a “global emergency” means the outbreak of monkeypox is an “extraordinary event” that could or has spilled over into more countries and requires an all-encompassing response to stem its spread.

Even so, the emergency declaration only serves as a plea to the countries around the world to mobilise their efforts toward fighting a disease outbreak that could potentially yield catastrophic results. But past announcements have elicited mixed reactions as UN health agency has largely been ineffective in getting countries to act.

Nevertheless, the announcement was made after WHO’s expert committee met this week to assess the threat monkeypox posed for the world. Last month, too, the committee had met to discuss the matter. However, they had then said that the worldwide monkeypox outbreak did not yet amount to an international emergency.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the W.H.O.’s director general, however, on Saturday countermanded a panel of advisers, who could not reach a consensus, and proclaimed monkeypox a “public health emergency of international concern.”

“We have an outbreak that has spread around the world rapidly through new modes of transmission, about which we understand too little, and which meets the criteria for a public health emergency,” Dr. Tedros told reporters.

As per the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, upwards of 16,000 cases of monkeypox have been logged in 74 countries since about May. To date, deaths due to monkeypox have only been reported in Africa, where a more dangerous version of the virus is in circulation, chiefly in Nigeria and Congo.

However, in the last few months, monkeypox cases have been reported in several countries, including in Europe and North America, triggering concerns among WHO authorities about the outbreak turning into a global pandemic.

‘Had Partha Chatterjee entered BJP washing machine, ED would not have arrested him’: TMC after the minister’s arrest in recruitment scam

After West Bengal Industry Minister Partha Chatterjee was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the West Bengal SSC recruitment scam and a huge amount of cash was recovered from the residence of an aide of the minister, Trinamool Congress Party held a press conference and alleged that Bharatiya Janata Party is politically influencing the central agency. TMC also criticized West Bengal’s BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari in this press conference. The press conference was held at the party headquarters in Kolkata and addressed by Firhad Hakim, Aroop Biswas, and Kunal Ghosh.

Talking about the case of over Rs 21 crore and other valuables worth over Rs 1 crore recovered from a flat of actor Arpita Mukherjee, close aide of Partha Chatterjee, the party denied any link with her. Kunal Ghosh said that Arpita Mukherjee is not related to TMC in any way, and thus the party and the government has nothing do with the black money recovered by ED. The TMC leader instead demanded to complete the probe soon so that the source of the money can be revealed. ‘From where so much notes came must be probed’, TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said.

The Trinamool Congress said that despite the arrest of minister Partha Chatterjee, he will be not be removed from the party of the state government now. The TMC leaders said in the press conference that if he is found guilty after the probe, then appropriate action will be taken against him. Kunal Ghosh said that the party has full faith on the law.

However, the TMC leaders completely avoided the matter of SSC recruitment scam, and instead accused BJP of using the ED for political witch-hunting. Firhad Hakim said, the probe in the scam was ordered two months ago, and had Partha Chaterjee entered the ‘washing machine of BJP’, ED would not have arrested him.

West Bengal’s Minister of Transport, Urban Development and Municipal Affairs and Housing Firhad Hakim said, “In today’s situation, it seems like ED is being run by BJP. If Suvendu Adhikari is saying that a lot of things are going to be found in the future even before ED is giving any statement. It means that ED is politically influenced by BJP.”

He further said, “We again say that if found guilty under the law, the TMC will take strict action and TMC has no relation with Arpita Mukherjee. Whoever joined the BJP, gets cleared by its washing machine. BJP has been baffled by the success of the 21 July martyrs day crowd and now BJP is accusing by showing pictures. If this is the case there are so many instances where the accused person’s pictures are seen with BJP leaders. Why no action was being taken against the Narada scam accused Suvendu Adhikari?”

The TMC also claimed that photographs showing Partha Chatterjee and Arpita Mukherjee together dos not mean that Chatterjee is linked to cash found at her house. To probe their point, they also displayed photographs showing PM Narendra Modi with Vijay Mallya and others accused of scams.

The TMC leaders also slammed the Congress party for praising the ED over the probe against Partha Chatterjee. The TMC leaders said, if the ED can be good for the probe in Kolkata, how can the the agency be bad in Delhi for interrogating Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

Arpita Mukherjee, a close aide to West Bengal Minister Partha Chatterjee, was detained after unearthing Rs 21 crore in cash at her residence. Partha Chatterjee was presented before the Bankshall Court in Kolkata after he was arrested. The Enforcement Directorate detained Partha Chatterjee on 23rd July 2022 in connection with the suspected teacher recruitment fraud in West Bengal.

TMC leader Partha Chatterjee’s arrest took place just one day after the huge cash was found in Mukherjee’s residence. The ED is following the money trail in the scandal as the CBI is investigating the suspected anomalies in the School Service Commission (SSC) recruitment. While in custody, Partha Chatterjee experienced chest pain symptoms and was rushed to the SSKM hospital in Kolkata.

Hours after being remanded to ED custody, West Bengal Cabinet Minister Partha Chatterjee develops chest pain, taken to hospital

Hours after being remanded to Enforcement Directorate custody, West Bengal Industry Minister Partha Chatterjee developed chest pain and has been taken to the SSKM hospital in Kolkata. Trinamool Congress leader Chatterjee was arrested on Saturday (July 23) in connection with the School Service Commission (SSC) scam case.

Partha Chatterjee’s lawyer Somnath Mukherjee said, “Partha Chatterjee (West Bengal cabinet minister and former Education Minister of the state) is not feeling well. He has developed heartache. We demanded that proper medical facilities should be given to him if ED’s custody is granted.”

The 69-year-old TMC politician owns several flats, including the one where a massive amount of cash was found, which he had reportedly gifted to Arpita Mukherjee. It is notable that more than Rs 21 crore in cash and jewelry worth over Rs 1 crore were recovered earlier from the resident of Arpita Mukherjee, a ‘close aide’ of Partha Chatterjee. It has also emerged that he owns a luxurious flat in the Naktala neighborhood of South Kolkata, which is reportedly used to keep only his dogs.

On July 23, officials of the Enforcement Directorate arrested Partha Chatterjee and later produced him before the Bankshall court. He was sent to judicial custody for a period of 2 days by the court. Arpita Mukherjee also has been arrested after the recovery of just a stash of cash from her flat.

The arrest came a day after the Enforcement Directorate began search operations at various premises linked to the recruitment scam in the West Bengal School Service Commission (WB-SSC) and West Bengal Primary Education Board. Prior to the arrest, Partha Chatterjee was questioned for around 26 hours in connection with the SSC scam case. The Enforcement Directorate also raided 13 locations linked to the TMC Minister.

Kerala Gold smuggling prime accused Swapna Suresh says NIA officials took orders from CM Pinarayi Vijayan

Swapna Suresh, one of the prime accused in the Kerala gold smuggling case, Friday accused the NIA officers of Kerala cadres working on the directions of CM Pinarayi Vijayan. Speaking to news agency ANI, Swapna alleged that the central agency had deleted evidence submitted by her.

She further alleged that her phone, which she submitted to the agency, containing chats and other information about the involvement of Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in the gold smuggling case had gone missing.

Swapna asserted in her affidavit submitted to the High Court that the phone was not included in the seizure mahasar.

The device, according to her, contained evidence that the former principal secretary M Sivasankar had informed her about the CM’s request for an NIA investigation into the case. Sivasankar had claimed that it would be easier to manipulate records because the officers assigned to the agency were from the Kerala cadre and were close to the CM and his party.

Swapna Suresh alleged, “the evidence was first seized by NIA and when I tried to sit with other investigative agencies, they couldn’t find them because they were deleted from them. Most of the evidence was deleted. I am just trying to gather them. So, I will definitely be successful. Those NIA officers were from the Kerala cadre. So obviously, they have to do what the honourable CM demands them. And they will definitely be given stars and offers.”

“He (KT Jaleel) cannot deny any allegation. It is not an allegation, it is with evidence. I have added this in an affidavit to show that this gentleman can stoop down to any level if he is a Minister or an MLA to do anything or attack a publication and a poor woman like me. I wasn’t working as a PA to the Consul General during that period. If you look into the dates, I was working for the Space Park project under the government of Kerala where I was placed by the honourable CM, Sivasankar and all these people,” she added.

Notably, on Thursday, Swapna also filed an affidavit in the Kerala High Court accusing former Kerala minister and present MLA KT Jaleel of indulging in “anti-national activities” and allegedly violating protocol by having shady dealings with the UAE Consul General.

Swapna filed the counter affidavit against the Kerala government’s petition that opposed her plea to quash the FIR in the conspiracy case registered on the complaint of former minister KT Jaleel.

Swapna Suresh revealed money reached CM’s house in Biryani vessels

It may be recalled that last month, Swapna Suresh had said that she has a lot to reveal about the case but alleged threat to her life. She has raised serious allegations against CM Pinaryi Vijayan and his family. While speaking to reporters after her deposition before the court on June 7, Swapna alleged that a bag containing money was sent to CM Vijayan when he was in Dubai in 2016.

She further said that on M Sivsankar’s orders, biryani vessels containing heavy metals were transported from the consulate general’s house to the Cliff House, the CM’s official residence. “These vessels had heavy objects other than biryani. I can’t reveal everything right now. I will make further revelations when the time is right,” she added.

Suresh names CM Pinarayi Vijayan and three other ministers in the Gold smuggling case

Notably, Swapna Suresh, in the past has also levelled serious allegations against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and three ministers of his cabinet pertaining to the Gold smuggling case. Last year, ahead of the crucial assembly elections in Kerala, the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) government had been pushed into a tight spot after Swapna Suresh had revealed to the Customs Department that Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was very much involved in the gold and dollar smuggling cases.

In a sensational disclosure, Swapna Suresh reportedly also detailed Kerala CM Vijayan’s close connections with the previous UAE Consul General.

In October 2020, Suresh also revealed to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) that Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had held multiple meetings with the Consul General of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2017.

TMC Minister Partha Chatterjee, arrested in SSC recruitment scam case, has an air-conditioned flat only for his dogs

Trinamool Congress leader Partha Chatterjee, who was arrested on Saturday (July 22) in connection to the School Service Commission (SSC) scam case, has a flat exclusively for his dogs. It is notable that more than Rs 21 crore in cash and jewellery worth above Rs 1 crore from the resident of Arpita Mukherjee, a ‘close aide’ of Partha Chatterjee.

The 69-year-old TMC politician owns several flats, including the one from where massive amount of cash has been recovered, which he reportedly gifted to actor Arpita Mukherjee. Now it has emerged that he owns a luxurious flat in the Naktala neighbourhood of South Kolkata, which is reportedly used to keep his dogs only. As per reports, the TMC Minister does not stay there and uses the air-conditioned flat as an exclusive space for his four-legged friends.

The veteran politician has 3 pet dogs, which are housed on the 2nd floor of the ‘Siddhi Enclave.’ The air-conditioner is reportedly run 24 hours to keep the dogs cool. Moreover, Partha Chatterjee has also hired 2 caretakers, including a woman, to look after his pets. The flat earlier had four dogs, but one died some time ago, and now there are three dogs.

According to reports, Partha Chaterjee has three flats in the same building in Diamond City, one of which has been used to keep the dogs.

In May this year, the Calcutta High Court had raised red flags about the sources of income of Patha Chatterjee and had mentioned the flat for dogs. Justice Abhijeet Ganguly had remarked, “He has a flat for his pet dogs in Naktala. How did he become the owner of so much property? Details of it must be furnished before the court.”

Justice Ganguly had added that he can’t accept that Partha Chaterjee does not know anything, and sought a thorough probe on his sources of income.

Interestingly, the flat is located adjacent to Naktala Udayan Sangha, the Durga Puja committee of TMC leader Partha Chatterjee. Earlier, it was reported that the Central Bureau of Investigation was shocked to learn that the TMC politician has a flat in the name of his dogs.

ED nabs Partha Chatterjee

On July 23, officials of the Enforcement Directorate arrested Partha Chatterjee and later produced him before the Bankshall court. He was sent to judicial custody for a period of 2 days. Aripta Mukherjee also has been arrested after recovery of just stash of cash from her flat.

The Enforcement Directorate also raided 13 locations belonging to the TMC Minister.

Uttar Pradesh: Two youths of another community caught spitting on a Kanwar Yatra in Meerut, upset Kanwariyas block highway in protest

An incident of spitting on a ‘Kanwar Yatra’ on the Delhi-Dehradun highway near Meerut has created a lot of tension in the area. The group of Kanwariyas was heading back to Rajasthan after taking holy Ganga water from Haridwar when two youths spit on their Kanwar, desecrating it. The Kanwariyas managed to catch hold of one of the culprits while the other one managed to run away.

The Kanwariyas said that as they were crossing the Kankarkheda bypass post on the Delhi-Dehradun highway, the two youths came after jumping the divider and spat at three places on their Kanwar. The upset Kanwariyas surrounded the duo and managed to catch hold of one of them while the other escaped. The police arrived on the scene and took the caught individual away, who was identified as belonging to another community at the police station.

Demanding strict action against the culprit, the angry Shiv bhakts sat on a dharna on the highway and protested for their demand. Looking at the sensitivity of the matter, several senior officers, DM Deepak Meena, SSP Rohit Singh Sajwan, SP City Vineet Bhatnagar, SP Crime Anit Kumar, and SP Traffic Jitendra Srivastava, reached the spot and tried to placate the upset Kanwariyas.

Meerut DM Deepak Meena and SSP Rohit Singh Sajwan said that the matter is currently being investigated. They added that if the charge of breaking the Kanwar is proved, those guilty will not be spared.

They further mentioned that the Kanwariyas whose Kanwar has been broken in the incident, have sent to Haridwar to take back the Ganges water in a police car. At present the situation is peaceful and the remaining Kanwariyas have marched toward their destination.

Meat thrown at Kanwar Yatris in Delhi’s Seelampur

On Wednesday, scores of pilgrims participating in the Kanwar yatra staged a protest in the Muslim-dominated Seelampur area in Delhi after they discovered that a piece of meat was thrown at one of the Kanwars making the holy Ganga water impure. The Kanwariyas slammed the Kejriwal government and blocked the roads in Delhi for an hour or so.

The Kanwariyas staged a protest and raised slogans against the Delhi government and Police authorities and alleged that someone deliberately had thrown the meat at the yatra. They stated that the incident had hurt the religious sentiments of the Hindus. The outrage escalated so much that the traffic in Delhi was disrupted for about an hour.

‘Media running agenda-driven debates and kangaroo courts’: CJI Ramana slams media amid criticism of judiciary over controversial remarks

Amid the backlash the judiciary is facing in recent weeks over controversial remarks and judgements, especially over oral remarks against Nupur Sharma, the chief justice of India today launched an attack on Indian media during a speech. The CJI alleged that media is creating difficulties for judiciary and harming the democracy. He expressed concerns about the “concerted campaigns” in media and social media against judges, and debates on media on cases heard by the courts calling them “ill-informed and agenda driven.”

Chief Justice of India N V Ramana made these remarks on Saturday at a public lecture at the National University of Study & Research in Law, Ranchi.

In his speech, CJI N V Ramana discussed the difficulties confronting the modern judiciary and slammed the media organizations for allegedly running Kangaroo Courts. “Of late, we see media running kangaroo courts, at times on issues even experienced judges find difficult to decide”, he said while addressing an event at the National University of Study and Research in Law in Ranchi.

He also stated that many of the media organizations were ill-informed and drove agenda-driven debates on issues involving justice delivery. “Biased views being propagated by media are affecting the people, weakening democracy, and harming the system. In this process, justice delivery gets adversely affected. This act of the media is proving to be detrimental to the health of democracy”, he said.

He went on to say that the media was undermining democracy by exceeding and violating their obligations. “There is still some accountability in print media.” Electronic media, on the other hand, has no responsibility since what it presents evaporates into thin air. “Worse is social media,” the CJI claimed.

He added that it would be the best practice if the media could self-regulate and measure its words. The CJI also hinted that the media had adopted the habit of interfering in Court decisions and government practices. “You should not overstep and invite interference, either from the government or from the courts. Judges may not react immediately. Please don’t mistake it to be a weakness or helplessness. When liberties are exercised responsibly, within their domains, there will be no necessity of placing reasonable or proportionate external restrictions,” CJI Ramana was quoted.

Meanwhile, Justice Ramana also made mentioned the increase in the physical attacks on judges. “These days, we are witnessing an increasing number of physical attacks on judges…Judges have to live in the same society as the people that they have convicted, without any security or assurance of safety”, he said. He pressed that the judges were being treated separately from politicians, bureaucrats, police officers, and other public representatives.

The CJI further stated that the most difficult task confronting today’s court was ‘prioritizing matters for adjudication’. “The courts cannot afford to ignore socio-economic reality.” To spare the system from needless disputes and difficulties, the judge must prioritize important concerns”. The Chief Justice went on to say that the major causes for the country’s case backlog were the failure to fill judicial vacancies and the failure to improve infrastructure.

“I shall not fail to place on record my worries about the future of judiciary in this country… The burden on an already fragile judicial infrastructure is increasing by the day. There have been a few knee-jerk reactions to augmenting infrastructure… However, I haven’t heard of any concrete plan to equip the judiciary to meet the challenges of the foreseeable future, leave alone a long-term vision for the century ahead….It is only with the coordinated efforts by the judiciary and the executive that this alarming issue of infrastructure can be addressed,” he said concluding his address at the National University of Study and Research in Law in Jharkhand’s Ranchi.

‘Congress character assassinated an 18-year-old because her mother fought Rahul Gandhi’: Smriti Irani responds to allegations against daughter

Union minister Smriti Irani on Saturday hit back at the Congress party after it accused her daughter of running an “illegal bar” in Goa, stating that she will take the matter to the court of law and the court of people against the malicious character assassination of her daughter.

“An 18-year-old girl, a college student, her character today was assassinated by Congressmen. Her fault is that her mother fought the Lok Sabha elections against Rahul Gandhi from Amethi in 2014, 2019,” Irani said.

Earlier today, Congress leaders, including Pawan Khera, alleged in a press conference that Smriti Irani’s daughter ran an ”illegal bar” in Goa and asked PM Modi to sack her from the cabinet.

Rubbishing allegations against her daughter, Irani hauled Congress leaders over the coals and challenged them to show her daughter’s name in the show cause notice they had flashed in the press conference earlier today.

“Her character mutilation stemmed from the so-called show cause notice. I want to ask that Congress person where is my daughter’s name in the papers he flashed. Jairam Ramesh said he is taking a position based on an RTI application. My question is—where does the RTI application name my daughter,” Irani asked.

“The allegations that my daughter runs an illegal bar is not only malicious to assassinate her character but also to politically malign me,” Irani added.

The Union Minister stated that the allegations against her daughter were levelled at the behest of the Congress leadership, i.e the Gandhi family, because she dared to hold a press conference and question Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi about the Rs 5,000 crore loot of the Indian treasury.

“To the Gandhi family, which directed that this press conference be held against my child, I challenge you to send Rahul Gandhi back to fight Lok Sabha elections in 2024 from Amethi, and he will lose again. That is my promise as a BJP worker and as a mother to that 18-year-old child,” Irani said.
