There was never any doubt that ‘seculars’ were behind the Delhi riots

It was always a matter of common sense. The eyes of the world are upon us. Delhi is all set to welcome the President of the United States. Then, the evening before his scheduled arrival, riots break out in the capital. Thick clouds of smoke rise high above the city as the world media watches.

The US President finishes his visit and his plane takes off. The violence stops. As if someone has pulled a switch.

You don’t even need to ask who was behind the violence. Anyone with common sense would know that this could only have been done by opponents of Prime Minister Modi, trying to embarrass him in front of the world.

But in this case, common sense was facing two powerful enemies: brazen shamelessness of the liberal ecosystem and their overwhelming vice like grip over global media outlets. And thus was born the smear against Hindus, especially the Hindu right, of engineering riots in Delhi. Some went so far as to call it “genocide.”

From Day 1, this was an open and shut case. It was obvious who had the motive. There were viral videos of stones and petrol bombs thrown from the houses of ‘secular’ leaders. Legions of police and media persons later thronged their homes to see their inventory of acid, stones, rods, petrol bombs and assorted riot ammunition.

We had not one or two people, but entire localities pointing fingers at who killed IB employee Ankit Sharma. On TV channel after TV channel. We had the dead body of Ankit Sharma, recovered from the gutter, with injuries too many to count.

And yet the smear continued. They called Hindus the worst of names, starting with Nazi.

Now we even have a confession from Tahir Hussain.

Tahir Hussain confesses he wanted to ‘teach Hindus a lesson’

In his confession, Tahir Hussain has also named people such as Khalid Saifi and Umar Khalid as well as the PFI.

The liberal ecosystem was ahead here as well. They had started raising the pitch over Khalid Saifi a while ago, highlighting the fact that he has a wife and kids. The familiar template, from “headmaster’s son” to “math teacher” to “video game player.” Whenever a ‘secularist’ is accused of a crime, go find some small human aspect of his life that a common person can relate to.

In a world where Osama bin Laden is remembered as “husband and father” and ISIS chief Baghdadi is remembered as “austere religious preacher,” creating sympathy for small fry like Khalid Saifi is no big deal for liberal media.

And therefore, no matter how many facts pile on, the insane global liberal narrative around Delhi riots continues. They don’t have motive, witnesses, physical evidence, confessions, anything to put the blame of Hindus. But they have friends in powerful places and that is what counts.

If control over media is one pillar of the liberal narrative, brazen shamelessness is the other. Almost exactly five years ago, as many as 15000 people from the secular community gathered in the heart of Mumbai to pay last respects to terrorist Yakub Memon. They did it with the whole world watching: a public celebration of one of the worst terror attack in India’s history.

As counter-intuitive as it may seem, the brazenness works in their favor. In terms of public perception. If you can tell a lie, so many times and so brazenly, looking people in the eye, with no trace of confusion or regret, they will start believing you. So bringing 15,000 people to the streets to support Yakub Memon is perverse, but it works. Especially in the court of global opinion. Not everyone in America knows intimately about events in India. Whoever speaks with more confidence has a chance of being believed.

Did you know that the term “conman” is actually short for “confidence man?” The oldest references are to a New York man in the 1840s who would walk up to people on the street and politely ask for their watch. He never snatched anything. They gave it to him. It was art, really.

That’s who the modern liberal is. They lie to you with such amazing confidence that you start believing in them.

There is only one way to stop the confidence man. It’s common sense. So unplug yourself from the silly narratives about Delhi riots. And just ask yourself: who had the motive?

‘Aaj Dekh Lenge Hinduon ko’: The tale of Faizal Farooqui, Rajdhani and DRP school and what Chargesheet number 1 says

The anti-Hindu Delhi riots rocked the national capital on the 24th and 25th of February 2020, leaving over 53 dead and several hundred injured. The Delhi Police and the Special Cell have filed numerous chargesheets in the Delhi riots that pertain to several different incidents of violence that led to carnage and destruction over a period of the two days. Other than Chand Bagh, one of the areas that saw unprecedented planned brutality was Shiv Vihar Tiraha.

The Shiv Vihar Tiraha lies in the jurisdiction of three police stations – Karwal Nagal, Dayalpur and Gokulpuri. One road in the Shiv Vihar Tiraha leads to Mustafabad, which is a largely Muslim dominated area, and the other leads to areas like Shiv Vihar and Babu Nagar which have a mixed population. The areas have mostly Hindu dominated colonies with Muslim houses as well. The Shiv Vihar Tiraha violence was especially brutal against Hindus. On the afternoon of 24th February, the first body that was found was that of Dilbar Negi. His hands and legs were chopped off, and the rest of him was burnt right in front of Rajdhani school in Anil Sweets.

In Shiv Vihar Tiraha, one of those most sinister plans hatched was executed from the rooftop of Rajdhani School. Islamist mobs fired guns, threw bottles full of acid, stones etc from the rooftop of Rajdhani school which is owned by one Faizal Farooqui. The first chargesheet filed in the Delhi Anti-Hindu riots case also pertained to the Rajdhani school and the events that transpired there on the 24th and the 25th of February 2020.

The complaint in the case was filed by one Mr Yatendra Sharma, the owner of DRP school which is adjacent to Rajdhani school. DRP, which is owned by a Hindu was completely gutted by the mob that was atop the Rajdhani school, which is owned by a Muslim. Most of the PCR calls on that day were made from DRP school, by one Dharmesh Sharma.

The chargesheet mentions the testimony of the guard of DRP school, that categorically blows open the entire conspiracy against Hindus during the Delhi riots. He said that in the afternoon of 24th of February when he went to close the gates of DRP school, he saw that several Muslims were standing at the gate of Rajdhani school and the owner, Faizal Farooqui was also present with them. Faizal, who was sitting on his bike, asked the guard of Rajdhani school (a Hindu whose identity we are withholding) to give access to “all his Muslim brothers” into the school.

The guard of DRP school further makes a shocking revelation. He says that he overheard Faizal Farooqui saying “Aaj dekh lenge Hinduon ko” (Roughly translated, it means “today we will teach Hindus a lesson”).

Then, the guard of DRP school says that the mob descended into DRP school with ropes from the terrace and a large number of rioters broke the gates of DRP school and entered the compound.

The guard further says that one of the rioters saw him and shouted, “Shahrukh bhai, wo raha Hindu. Maaro saale ko”.

Another witness from the area was examined (identity, as mentioned in the chargesheet, being withheld in this report). He too testified to exactly what the guard of DRP school had said. He said that at about 2 PM on the 24th of February 2020, he saw Faizal in front of Rajdhani school with other Muslims. While sitting on his bike, he instructed the guard of Rajdhani school to allow his “Muslim brothers” inside. He also heard him saying “Aaj dekh lenge Hinduon ko”.

Interestingly, further into the chargesheet, a witness also identified the driver of Faizal Farooqui as being actively involved in the riots that gutted DRP school.

What the Hindu guard of Rajdhani school, owned by Faizal Farooqui, said

The Hindu guard of the Rajdhani school, that was used as a launchpad to target Hindus, testified that at around 2 PM, Faizal was talking to his Muslim brothers while sitting on a bike and had instructed him to let them into the school. When the rioters came to the school, he, along with his family, fled to save their lives.

On the 25th of February, on the second day of the riots, Faizal met The Hindu guard and assured him that the Muslim rioters would not harm him “as per the plan”, however, The Hindu guard was scared for his life. He, therefore, did not return to the school. In the chargesheet, it is mentioned how he identified the rioters from CCTV footage.

The conspiracy and how money was paid to rioters by Faizal, owner of Rajdhani school

The chargesheet says that one Sharukh was apprehended by police on the tip-off of a ‘secret informer’. After being apprehended, during sustained interrogation, revealed the involvement of Faizal and admitted to his own involvement in the riots as well. Interestingly, Sharukh identified Faizal Farooqui while he was already in the police station being interrogated in a separate case.

Sharukh under interrogation started that Faizal used to constantly tell him that due to CAA and NRC, all Muslims would be thrown out of India.

Sharukh admitted that Faizal told him to be prepared for any kind of sacrifice for the community. He also admitted that Faizal Farooqui had given him Rs 5,000 and told him to wipe out Hindus and their business interests. He also disclosed that Faizal had strong connections to Deoband and had visited the place frequently.

The chargesheet categorically states that the number of stones, bricks, acid bottles, weapons etc found on Rajdhani school could not have been collected in one day spontaneously. It says that Faizal was the natural leader of his community in the area and was looked upon to give guidance to the Muslim community since he was resourceful and rich. He had three schools in the area and was a leader of the Muslim community. Rajdhani school, which is a tall building owned by Faizal, was used as a vantage point with his instruction to attack Hindus.

Further, the chargesheet says that an analysis of the CCTV footage has proved that the parents of the students studying in Rajdhani inexplicably came to pick their wards up at 11 AM while those of DRP school came as per schedule. The streets adjoining Rajdhani school were also deserted as per the chargesheet. This, the police have concluded is a clear indication that the riots were pre-planned.

On the 25th, the second day of the riots, Faizal even gave Rs 2,000 to the rioting mob for food after praising their “word” and how effectively they had targeted Hindus of the area.

How Faizal Farooqui was in touch with JCC, Pinjra Tod etc

Faizal Farooqui, during interrogation, stated that the CAA and the NRC were against the Muslim community and hence, he had been participating actively in the protests that were taking place across the capital. Further, the chargesheet says that he admitted meeting several Muslim clerics, members of Pinjra Tod, JCC and also the radical Islamist outfit PFI. Further, he said that he was assured all sort of help and cooperation.

From JCC, Faizal Farooqui was also in touch with Safoora Zargar who garnered a lot of sympathies because she was pregnant at the time of her arrest for her involvement in the riots. From Pinjra Tod, Faizal was in touch with Divyangana and Natasha Narwal as well. Further, he was also in touch with Md Illyas, who is the head of PFI Delhi.

Faizal had travelled to Deoband a day before the riots

The chargesheet says that Faizal Farooqui had travelled to Deoband in Uttar Pradesh on the 23rd of February, a day before the riots took place. He left Delhi at 7 AM and returned at about 8:15 in the evening. It is pertinent to note that Deoband is a hotbed for radical Islam and also houses the Darul Ul Deoband where the Sunni Deobandi Islamic Movement began. The radical faction is infamous for issuing fatwas for anything that they perceive as ‘unIslamic’ or not confirming to their traditional, radical view of Islam.

The police also suspect Faizal’s connections with Tablighi Jamaat and the Delhi Markaz. In the chargesheet that OpIndia has perused, 13 calls and messages were exchanged between Faizal and Abdul Aleem, who is close to Maulana Saad. These aspects are still being investigated by the Delhi Police. The police also suspect that the meteoric rise in the properties purchased by Faizal could be connected to the rise to the top of Maulana Saad in Markaz.

The 6 prominent incidents of violence against Hindus in Shiv Vihar Taraha

The chargesheet details the 6 prominent incidents of violence against Hindus in the Shiv Vihar Taraha area.

  1. On the 24th of February, the totally burnt body of Dilbar Negi was recovered.
  2. On the 24th at 4 PM, Rahul Solanki sustains gunshot injury.
  3. On the 25th, acid was thrown as SSB Jawans.
  4. On the 25th at around 4:30 PM, Veer Bhan sustained gunshot injury on his head while crossing the Taraha on his bike.
  5. On the 25th at around 5:00 PM, Dinesh sustained gunshot injury on his head while standing at the Taraha.
  6. On the 25th at around 10:15 PM, Alok sustained injuries from stone pelting by Muslims.

It is pertinent to keep in mind that this was the first chargesheet which was filed in the Delhi riots case by the Delhi Police and subsequently, far more information has come to light. It is difficult to view the riots on the 24th and 25th when the planning of the riots was taking place since December 2019 with several incidents of violence that preceded the final riots. OpIndia report on the planning and chronology of events since December 2019 can be purchased and read here.

Tavleen Singh comes out to defend her son Aatish Taseer for spewing venom on Amit Shah, lies through her teeth

Home Minister Amit Shah was tested positive for Covid-19 yesterday. Though he stated that he is feeling alright, he is currently lodged at a hospital in Delhi for the treatment after doctors advised him to get admitted as a precaution. As expected, a lot of ‘secular-liberals’ are celebrating the news. One of them was Aatish Taseer, the son of journalist Tavleen Singh, who called Shah a “fat b**tard” in his tweet.

Aatish wrote, “Every now and then @TheTweetOfGod stretches the limits of our our moral universe. Just as our love of a free press requires us to defend the @DailyMailUK, so now too we are called upon to wish this fat bastard (who has done nothing but evil in his life) a speedy recovery.” TheTweetOfGod is a parody account who portrays himself as God. If someone follows him and checks his timeline, he is no less than a propagandist who spews venom very often.

Taseer has tagged a popular parody handle TheTweetOfGod which often shares sarcastic statements as that from ‘God’.

Taseer calling someone b**tard has a sad irony

Aatish Taseer is the child of Tavleen Singh and a former Pakistani politician Salman Taseer, born out of a brief affair when they were not married. According to the Cambridge dictionary, the word bas**rd means “a person born to parents who are not married to each other.” Many social media users pointed out to Taseer that his unabated hatred against the Home Minister is only displaying his own upbringing and hateful mind.

The lies peddled by Tavleen and her son over the OCI status

Even though his late father was a Pakistani Taseer had obtained OCI (Overseas Citizenship of India) benefits. As per the law, if someone has any Pakistani connection from either of the parents’ side, the person is not eligible for OCI status. When Indian authorities corrected their mistake and revoked his OCI status, his mother, Tavleen Singh did not take it well and started spewing venom over the social media and in press. Since the revocation of the OCI status, both Taseer and his mother keep ranting on social media and through their articles.

Enraged over the removal of a fraudulent entitlement, both Taseer and Tavleen had helped fan a narrative that the Indian government had ‘taken away Taseer’s citizenship’ and has ‘thrown him out’. However, in reality, Taseer never was an Indian citizen. He was a UK citizen and a person of Pakistani origin by birth.

Indian authorities had revealed that Taseer had lied and concealed the information about his Pakistani father in his documents to violate Indian law and get the OCI status.

MHA tweets on Atish Taseer
Home Ministry’s dismissal of fake claims in media

Tavleen Singh and her son had also constantly lied about “not being able to see each other”, putting forth a narrative that the government’s revocation of OCI status has somehow ‘banned’ Tavleen from travelling abroad or Taseer to travel to India to meet. In reality, Taseer can come to India anytime he wishes, by applying for a visa the usual way. Similarly, nothing can stop Tavleen from going to USA or UK to meet her son. However, the mother-son, for some unknown reasons, do not seem to be doing that.

Taveleen and Taseer, with their media clout, have been fanning a fake victimhood to support him and the cabal has even published articles urging the Indian government to break laws to accommodate him.

Tavleen defends Taseer’s abusive language and hatred

Tavleen Singh has also been defending her foul-mouthed, hinduphobic son. When a twitter user called out Aatish Taseer’s usage of foul language and uncivilised behaviour in reacting to the news of a person (the Indian Home Minister) getting infected with a disease, Tavleen sprang up to defend Taseer, beating the same punctured drum that Taseer was ‘exiled’ from India, which is a big fat lie.

Tavleen’s hatred and sense of entitlement

When the Indian government banned Chinese apps in June, Singh had posted a derogatory tweet mocking the death of the Indian forces. She was called out by Meghna Girish, mother of a martyred soldier, saying how disrespectful it is of her to say something like this after our brave soldiers lost their lives. Tavleen Singh called Meghna a troll and insulted her on social media. According to Tavleen, she is more of a patriot and knows more about Indian forces because she “grew up in army stations.”

Meghana Girish is the mother of Major Akshay Girish who was martyred in the terrorist attack at the Nagrota Army base in 2016. According to Tavleen Singh, the mother who had lost her son for the service of motherland, was ‘urban balcony class shedding crocodile tears’.

Sushant Singh Rajput case: BMC forcefully ‘quarantines’ Bihar Police officer, DGP Bihar says he was not even provided accommodation

There were already reports of Mumbai Police’s non-cooperation to the Bihar Police officers who were in Mumbai for investigations into Sushant Singh Rajput’s case. In the latest development, Senior Bihar Police officer IPS Vinay Tiwari was reportedly sent to quarantine forcefully by BMC officials on reaching Mumbai on Sunday.

Tiwari was visiting Mumbai to lead the police team in the Sushant Singh Rajput case. A four-member team of Bihar Police is already in Mumbai investigating the case.

Director-General of Police, Bihar, IPS Gupteshwar Pandey showed displeasure on BMC’s action and posted a tweet from his twitter ID. He said, “IPS officer Vinay Tiwari reached Mumbai today from Patna on official duty to lead the police team there, but he has been forcibly quarantined by BMC officials at 11 pm today.”

He added that Tiwari reached Mumbai from Patna on official duty to lead the police team. However, he was forcibly sent to quarantine by BMC officials at 11 PM. Pandey also informed that IPS Tiwari was not provided accommodation in the IPS Mess even he requested for it. The officer is currently staying in a guest house in Goregaon. He also added a video of IPS Vinay Tiwari at the quarantine centre.

Complaint by Rajput’s father KK Singh

Sushant Singh Rajput’s father KK Singh had filed a police complaint last week against actor Rhea Chakraborty and her family members. The Bihar Police registered an FIR under various sections of IPC, including abetment of suicide. Singh said in his complaint that Rhea and her family had blackmailed, and harassed Sushant emotionally and financially. He also alleged that she took crores of rupees from Sushant’s account. The complaint also stated that Rhea had left Sushant’s house after a fight and took jewellery, cash and his medical reports with her.

Ankita Lokhande’s role in the investigation

Lokhande, who worked with Sushant in Pavitra Rishta and was in a relationship with the deceased actor for a long time, went to Patna for his funeral. At that, she showed his family some text messages and shared information about the problems Sushant was facing because of Rhea. She also provided all the information to Bihar Police. When Bihar Police reached Mumbai, she had also reportedly assisted them to commute in Mumbai for investigation as Mumbai Police allegedly did not provide any support for them.

Maharashtra Police vs Bihar Police

The case has turned into a tussle between Police departments of two states. DGP Pandey earlier said that Sushant’s death should not turn into a Bihar vs Maharashtra when he was informed that Mumbai Police is not providing any assistance. DGP, in one of his statements, urged Rhea to join the investigation as she is currently hiding.

The Mumbai Police is also probing the case. So far, they have interrogated some high-profile celebrities including Mahesh Bhatt, Rajeev Masand and many more. There were reports that when Bihar Police asked for information on Sushant’s ex-manager Disha Salian’s alleged suicide, the Mumbai Police said that they have accidentally deleted all the files.

‘Mind your own business’: Capt Amarinder Singh accuses Arvind Kejriwal of playing politics over Punjab hooch tragedy

Hitting out on his Delhi counterpart, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Sunday asked Kejriwal to ‘mind his own business’ for demanding CBI probe in the Punjab hooch tragedy which has claimed lives of over 100 people.

In a statement released by the Punjab CMO, Capt Amarinder Singh accused Kejriwal of trying to play dirty politics over tragedy to revive the political party in Punjab. Aam Aadmi Party is the principal opposition party in Punjab. “Rather than delay the investigation and allow the trail to go cold even in the present spurious liquor case by handing over the probe to CBI, he was more interested in ensuring swift action against all those whose greed had cost the state around 100 lives,” Singh said in a statement.

On Sunday, Kejriwal had taken to Twitter to demand CBI probe in the hooch tragedy.

Kejriwal had accused that none of the illicit liquor cases in Punjab in past few months have been solved by the Punjab Police.

On Sunday, the death toll in Punjab hooch tragedy crossed the 100 mark.

Of these, Taran Taran is the worst hit where as many as 80 people have lost their lives. Punjab CM Capt Amarinder Singh pointed out that 30 persons have already been arrested and five FIRs have been lodged in the case. Further, 13 officials from police and excise and taxation department have been suspended for negligence and are currently under investigation to determine their complicity in the case.

Tripura: FIR registered against CPIM leader and social media accounts of the party for spreading fake news on social media: Read details

An FIR has been registered against a Tripura CPIM leader and social media pages of the party for spreading fake news. The FIR was registered after Tripura BJP filed a complaint against CPIM for spreading fake news on social media claiming that BJP and RSS had demolished a statue depicting a woman performing the traditional Hojagiri dance in Khumulwng town in the state.

On 1st August, the Facebook account of CPIM Tripura had posted a video of the fallen statue, and claimed that it has been taken down by miscreants.

Screenshot of Facebook post of CPIM Tripura

The West Tripura unit of the party went a step ahead, and blamed BJP and RSS for the incident. In a Facebook post, they claimed that miscreants of BJP-RSS had vandalised the statue depicting a young tribal lady located at the Head Quarter of Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council.

Screenshot of Facebook post of CPIM West Tripura District

Jitendra Chaudhury, former MP of the party from Tripura, also posted images of the statue, blaming BJP and RSS for the same. “BJP-IPFT regime was inaugurated in Tripura through demolition of Lenin’s statue at Belonia on the day-1 itself,” he wrote, alleging that “Tripura is now a functioning lab of RSS-BJP in shaping their Hindu Rashtra Model for India”.

Screenshot of Facebook post of CPIM leader Jitendra Choudhury

But the claims made by the entire leadership of CPIM in Tripura blaming BJP and RSS for the fallen statue is incorrect, because it fell due to heavy rains, and it was not attacked by miscreants. Saying that rumours are being spread on breaking of one statue at Khumlung, Tripura police clarified on social media that the statue fell down due to heavy rain.

Screenshot of Facebook post of Tripura Police

The police also informed that a police party was present when the statue fell down, and a General Diary Entry has been recorded at the Radhapur Police Station in this regard. The police added that legal action is being taken against anyone spreading such rumours and thereby attempting to cause disharmony among communities, and requested citizens not to believe and spread such rumours.

Following the confirmation from police that the statue fell down due to rain, Tripura BJP lodged a complaint with the police and the district administration against the Communist Party of India (Marxist), its official Facebook pages, and Jitendra Chaudhury for spreading fake news. Suspecting political conspiracy behind the claims, BJP wrote in its complaint “We see it as a criminal effort to spread communal disharmony among the different communities of the State and as it appears a deep conspiracy has been hatched by the CPI(M) to promote and spread communal violence in the state. Such heinous efforts are also made in order to promote political anarchy in the state especially eyeing the forthcoming ADC Elections.”

They added, “it is an evil effort by the CPI(M) and its allies to destroy the process of progressive development of the state especially the ADC areas. This criminal conspiracy is against the true spirit and is also violative of the laws laid down by the Constitution of India and attracts penal measures of Indian Penal Code, 1860.”

Accordingly, a case was registered by police under sections 505(2)/153A(1)(a)/120B of the IPC at Radhapur Police Station, Khumulwng, Tripura, against the administrators of Facebook pages of Tripura CPIM, along with former MP Jitendra Chaudhury.

Pakistan: Indian flag appears on Dawn news screen with ‘Happy Independence Day’ message, channel claims it was hacked

0

Pakistani media agency Dawn News has said that its channel was ‘hacked’ following which its screen started showing the Indian flag with a message that read ‘Happy Independence Day’, Sidhant Sibal of WION News reported. An investigation has been apparently ordered into the same.

Dawn News has said that broadcast was on as usual when the Indian flag along with the message appeared on screen while a commerical was running. Its administration has said that it is too early to comment on the matter and it will inform its viewers as soon as the investigation has been concluded.

While it is unclear as to which individuals were responsible for the said event, speculation on social media is rife that it was the work of Indian hackers.

Indian hackers have in the past attempted such endeavours in which they have secured much success. In 2016, one hacker from India had apparently compromised the Agricultural Department of Baltistan’s website and warned Pakistani hackers, “If we start attack on you, it would be more dangerous than surgical strikes.” Some Indian hackers have also claimed to have extracted sensitive information from Pakistan in the past.

Heard people call others ‘rice bag convert’? Here is what the term means

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra during a television debate ahead of the Bhoomi Pujan event at Ram Janmabhoomi in Ayodhya called Congress Rahya Sabha MP Kumar Ketkar ‘rice bag convert’. It was after the senior Congress leader claimed that it is yet to decided whether Rama is a ‘creation of history or literature’.

Kumar Ketkar said, “Ram exists because of Ramayan. However, a conclusion is yet to be reached on whether Ram is the creation of history or literature. Valmiki wrote a great epic and its impact was felt both in India and abroad. But, I don’t know if He existed in history.“ At this, Sambit Patra slammed him and ended up calling him a rice bag convert.

“What is the Congressman saying? He is asking whether Lord Ram is the creation of history or literature. He is telling us to show evidence that Ram existed… If you had said the same thing about Allah, you would have been beheaded by now. Be grateful that you are a Hindu else you would not have the audacity to say something like this,” said Sambit Patra.

What does Rice Bag Convert mean?

The term ‘Rice Bag Convert’ or ‘Rice Christians’ is used to refer to people who convert to Christianity after being induced to do so by Christian missionaries on the promise of material benefits. The Brewer’s Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, published in the 19th Century, defined Rice Christians as “Converts to Christianity for worldly benefits, such as a supply of rice to Indians. Profession of Christianity born of lucre, not faith.”

Jason Wordie in an article for the South China Morning Post wrote, “The term “rice Christians” appears in the writings of William Dampier, an English explorer (and occasional privateer-pirate) who visited Indo-Pacific waters in the late 17th century. Dampier dismissively wrote of the French Catholic priests active at that time in Indochina, opining that “alms of rice have converted more than their preaching”.”

He stated further, “Materially opportunistic religious adherents arrived in the region in the wake of European voyages to maritime Asia from the 16th century. Commonly known as “rice Christians”, they have a long and generally distasteful history in Hong Kong, and elsewhere.” Thus, quite clearly, the term does not mean that the inducement is limited to rice alone but it features prominently.

Concerns about ‘Rice Bag Converts’ or ‘Rice Christians’

As is to be expected, concerns regarding ‘rice bag converts’ or ‘rice Christians’ often come the most from Asian countries such as India, Japan and China. Historically, Japan went on a war with Christian missionaries in order to eradicate the presence of the religion which they perceived to be a cultural as well as a polirical threat.

While Christian missionaries these days tend not to use bags of rice to induce conversions, at least some of them do not appear to have lost their attachment with the symbolism of the object. Mission India, a Christian Evangelical organisation, calls one of its projects the ‘Rice Bag Project’. The project involves handing out ‘Mission India Rice Bags’ to children.

Some Christian organisations, too, have voiced their concerns with such inducement as they believe conversion through inducement will not lead to a true change of heart but only changes on the surface. Some of them have also issued directives to missionaries in order to urge them to refrain from using allurement for conversions.

One Baptist Christian publication said, “On occasion, it might not be wrong to HELP another church to build its building, when it is plain that that congregation is doing all it can to build the building, and when it is plain that that congregation would eventually get its own building with or without outside help. But to channel U.S. church funds into church buildings in Asia (or elsewhere) is a very serious mistake. It will weaken those churches, at best. It is even possible that the churches which are so aided will never be true churches, being peopled only by “rice Christians.””

Another article noted, “Cambodia’s relative religious freedoms have encouraged Christian groups to set up shop in the Kingdom, but they risk creating ‘rice Christians’ when they preach to the poor.” The author of another ‘code of conduct’ for ‘Christian witness’ noted, “To the best of my ability I tried to explain to this well-meaning but misguided pastor that his approach to cross-cultural ministry was bound to produce “rice Christians” drawn to “faith” by the enticing prospect of a free trip to an American vacationland.”
