Bangladesh interim government once again downplays communal violence against Hindus and other minorities, claims they were political attacks

On 11th January, the interim government of Bangladesh once again downplayed the violence against Hindus and other minority groups in the country, stating that they were “politically motivated” and not communal. The claim by the government came after an alleged police investigation into the incidents of violence that erupted in the country following the fall of the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina’s regime.

According to a report in Bangladeshi news outlet Dhaka Tribune, the police investigation said that 98.4% of the 1,415 reported incidents of attacks and vandalism against minorities in the country were “politically motivated.” The report suggested that only 1.59% of the incidents occurred due to communal reasons. The police “findings” were shared by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus’s press wing.

Notably, the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council reported that 2,010 incidents of communal violence occurred in the country between 4th August and 20th August. However, experts believe that the number of incidents could have been much higher than those reported.

According to the report, police claimed that there were 1,769 cases of reported attacks and vandalism, out of which investigations into 1,415 incidents were completed. The investigations into 354 cases are still underway. Among the investigated cases, 1,254 were found to be substantiated while, according to Bangladeshi authorities, 161 lacked evidence.

The report read, “The investigation involved visiting the affected locations, communicating with institutions and individuals involved, and encouraging victims to formally file complaints.”

The data shared by the police said that out of 1,769 cases, 1,452 incidents occurred on a single day, 5th August, following the fall of Hasina’s regime. Furthermore, the report suggested that 134 additional communal violence cases were reported until 8th January.

The Yunus administration, while downplaying the attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh, maintained that they have a “zero-tolerance policy” towards any communal attacks in the country.

Attack on Hindus in Bangladesh since the fall of Dhaka

While the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) had deliberately avoided documenting the plight of Bangladesh Hindus, OpIndia had been vetting and reporting cases of atrocities since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina.

There have been at least 205 attacks on Hindu temples, shops and businesses within 3 days of the fall of Dhaka.

We previously exposed how Muslim students have forced as many as 60 Hindu teachers, professors and government officials to resign from their positions.

Human rights activist and exiled Bangladeshi blogger, Asad Noor, has recently revealed that the minority community is now being coerced into joining ‘Jamaat-e-Islami’.

On 6th September, a procession of Hindu devotees carrying the idol of Lord Ganesha came under attack in the Kadam Mubarak area in Chittagong city of Bangladesh.

Ahead of the Durga Puja celebrations, a radical Muslim man named Yasin Mia vandalised the idols of Goddess Durga and other Hindu deities in Gouripur town in the Mymensingh district of Bangladesh on 25th September.

In the latest series of attacks, idols of Goddess Durga and other Hindu deities were vandalised at the Rishipara Barwari Puja Mandap and the Manikadi Palpara Barwari Pujamandap on 28th September and 1st October respectively.

The attacks were carried out in Sujanagar upazila in Pabna district in Rajshahi Division of Bangladesh. While a total of 4 idols were defaced at the Rishipara Barwari Puja Mandap, another 5 Hindu idols were destroyed at the Manikadi Palpara Barwari Pujamandap.

On 3rd October, 7 idols of Hindu deities were destroyed at the Gopinath Jiur Akhara Durga Puja mandap in Kishoreganj, Dhaka Division, Bangladesh.

On 5th November, the Hindu community came under attack from police and law enforcement authorities in Hazari Goli in Chittagong city of Bangladesh.

On 29th November, a violent Muslim mob attacked Hindu minorities and vandalised 3 temples in Patharghata in Chittagong district of Bangladesh.

The Hindu religious sites that the Muslims targeted included the Shantaneshwari Matri Temple, the Shoni Temple, and Shantaneshwari Kalibari Temple. The attack took place immediately after the conclusion of Jumma Namaz

On 30th November, a prominent Hindu journalist named Munni Saha was arrested by the police from Karwan Bazar in Dhaka city of Bangladesh.

A group of extremists attacked the Mahashmashan Kali Mata Mandir, vandalised 7 idols of deities and stole gold ornaments on 13th December 2024.

On 19th December, a Muslim man identified as Alal Uddin vandalised an idol at the Polashkanda Kali Temple and then attempted to create a fake alibi. The incident occurred in Haluaghat upazila in the Mymensingh district of Bangladesh.

Another 37-year-old Muslim man identified as Azharul vandalised several idols of deities in Haluaghat Upazila in the Mymensingh district of Bangladesh.

The recent arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu and his aides, attempts at banning Hindu organisation ISKCON and stiffling Hindu protests with cases of ‘sedition’ highlight systematic persecution under the interim government of Muhammad Yunus.

There have been multiple instances of attacks on Hindus under the pretext of ‘blasphemy.’ The recent cases of Hridoy PalUtsab MandalPartha Biswas PintuAkash Das and Utsab Kumar Gian are shining examples of targeted persecution.

There have been many attempts to downplay violence against Hindus as ‘fake‘, ‘exaggerated‘ or ‘politically motivated‘.

PM Modi to inaugurate Sonamarg Tunnel, a project with great strategic and economic benefits – All you need to know

On 13th January, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the highly anticipated Z-Morh Tunnel, also called the Sonamarg Tunnel, in Jammu and Kashmir. The time for the inauguration has been set for 11:45 AM. This landmark infrastructure project will provide year-round connectivity to Sonamarg and the strategic Ladakh region, enhancing both defence logistics and tourism potential.

Prime Minister’s visit and response to CM Abdullah

During his visit for the inauguration, PM Modi will address a gathering and meet the workers who contributed to the construction of the tunnel. In a post on the social media platform X, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir shared some photographs of the tunnel from his recent visit to inspect the preparations. In the post, he wrote, “Visited Sonmarg today to review preparations for PM Narendra Modi ji’s visit on Monday. The inauguration of the Z-Morh Tunnel will open Sonmarg to tourism all year round. Sonmarg will now be developed as a great ski resort. The local population will not have to leave in winter, and the travel time to Kargil/Leh from Srinagar will also reduce.”

Quoting his post, PM Modi expressed his eagerness to visit Sonamarg and wrote, “I am eagerly awaiting my visit to Sonamarg, Jammu and Kashmir, for the tunnel inauguration. You rightly point out the benefits for tourism and the local economy. Also, loved the aerial pictures and videos!”

What is the Z-Morh Tunnel

The Z-Morh or Sonamarg Tunnel is a 6.4-km-long bi-directional structure with a 5.6-km approach road that connects Gagangir in Ganderbal to the health resort of Sonamarg. The name of the tunnel has been derived from the Z-shaped stretch of road it replaces. The road, which is being used to date, is prone to avalanches during winter, leaving Sonamarg virtually inaccessible.

The tunnel has been constructed at an altitude of over 8,500 feet. It is a critical part of the Srinagar-Leh highway and will ensure all-weather connectivity to Ladakh. Notably, it is vital for both military and strategic purposes as well as for the local economy and tourism industry.

Strategic and economic benefits

The tunnel is expected to transform Sonamarg into a year-round tourism hub. It will boost winter sports and adventure tourism in the region. Furthermore, it will enhance defence logistics by providing a safer, more reliable route to Ladakh.

The tunnel has been developed by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL). Originally, it was started by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) in 2012 but faced delays and retendering. The project was completed by APCO Infratech under a public-private partnership.

Future developments: the Zoji-la Tunnel

It is noteworthy that the Z-Morh Tunnel is part of a broader initiative to improve connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh. The construction of the Zoji-la Tunnel, which will link Sonamarg to Drass in Ladakh, is also underway. The Zoji-la Tunnel construction is expected to be completed by December 2026. Once operational, it will significantly reduce travel time and further strengthen economic ties between the two regions.

Security measures ahead of the inauguration

Ahead of PM Modi’s visit for the inauguration, security has been heightened across the region, specifically in Ganderbal. This will be the first time PM Modi is visiting Jammu and Kashmir since an elected government assumed power in October 2024.

All intelligence officials assigned to National Security Council must resign by 12:01 PM on 20 January, says Trump’s incoming NSA Mike Waltz

0

Donald Trump’s incoming National Security Adviser Mike Waltz has said that every intelligence official deputed to the National Security Council (NSC) at the White House will have to resign by 12:01 p.m. Eastern time on 20 January, the day Trump becomes the president for the second time. He said that every intelligence official from the various departments and agencies currently assigned to the NSC will have to leave the White House by that time.

In a phone interview with Breitbart, Waltz said, “Everybody is going to resign at 12:01 on January 20. We’re working through our process to get everybody their clearances and through the transition process now. Our folks know who we want out in the agencies, we’re putting those requests in, and in terms of the detailees they’re all going to go back.”

He said that he is making sure everyone understands that it’s “crystal clear what the agenda is.”

The National Security Council is led by the National Security Adviser who serves as the President’s primary advisor on security matters. Under the Adviser’s leadership, a team of political appointees works with a group of “detailees.” These detailees are career government employees from federal agencies and departments such as the FBI, CIA, NSA, Pentagon, and other intelligence or law enforcement organizations. They are temporarily assigned to the NSC based on their expertise in specific areas.

The NSC is divided into different issue areas, such as counterterrorism, cyber policy, or regions like the Middle East, Europe, or Asia. The detailees help connect the work of the NSC with their home agencies, making sure the entire federal government follows through on the president’s decisions.

During the first term, Trump faced opposition from some of the detailees in the NSC. This included Alexander Vindman who led the first impeachment of Trump by testifying before the United States Congress regarding the alleged Trump–Ukraine scandal.

Incoming NSA Waltz said that he is taking very serious steps to ensure that there are no more Vindmans during the second term. He added that it will be ensured that people who are brought in are 100 percent aligned with the president’s agenda.

He said, “a good portion of the NSC are detailees, out from the agencies, our team knows who we want to bring in and we’re putting those requests out and we’re going to bring them in.”

Earlier Waltz had posted on X that “anyone working under President Trump in the NSC will be fully aligned with his America First agenda.” Over concerns expressed by some over faulty appointments, he said, “Any rumors or suggestions to the contrary are fake news and a distraction from the mission. We will clear the decks to Make America Great Again!”

Dhruv Advance Light Helicopters to be grounded till the root cause of coast guard helicopter crash in Porbandar is known

0

The Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd on Saturday decided that all `Dhruv’ Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) will remain grounded till the cause of the crash of the Coast Guard helicopter in Porbandar is determined. The HAL has told all operators of the ALH that the flying of the indigenous twin-engine choppers should remain suspended till the “root cause” of the crash on 5 January is established.

According to an official, the preliminary analysis of the data retrieved from the FDR (flight data recorder) and CVR (cockpit voice recorder) has shown that the pilots lost control of the helicopter three to four seconds before the crash which killed two pilots and a crew member.

The ALH Mark-III was procured by the Coast Guard in June 2021, and was hovering at 200 feet altitude after completing a 90-minute training sortie in the Coast Guard Air Enclave in Porbandar. The aircraft suddenly failed to respond to the controls of the pilots, nose-dived into the ground and burst into flames.

Two pilots, Commandant Saurabh and Deputy Commandant S K Yadav, and aircrew diver Manoj Pradhan Navik, were killed in the crash.

Following the crash, all 330 Dhruv Helicopters operated by the armed forces were grounded for safety checks. Earlier on Friday, HAL said that it was carrying out a detailed analysis of the crash and will take a call on whether the ALH fleet can resume flying operations or continue to remain on the ground. Now, it has been decided that the entire fleet will remain grounded till the exact cause of the crash is not found out.

HAL sources have said that the flight data recorder has been recovered and its analysis is going on extensively and it is expected that the exact cause will be known.

From fear of nationalist undercurrent to canards of an impending ‘Japanese bombing’: Read the forgotten British suppression of Kumbh festival

The Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh is set to take place from 13th January to 25th February. The significant Hindu festival is expected to attract millions of followers of Sanatan Dharma, as well as visitors from around the globe. As the date approaches, both familiar and obscure aspects regarding the Kumbh and its history have been coming to light. One such lesser-known fact pertains to the period when the British authorities imposed a ban on Kumbh.

Very few people know about the restriction enforced on devotees attending the celebrations in 1942 by the Britishers. This fact remained concealed in the pages of history, known by only a handful of historians. The colonial power had prohibited Kumbh 85 years before that as well, in the 19th century. However, the reasons behind the bans in these two instances were different.

The British provided an alleged justification for preventing the crowd at the religious gathering in 1942. It was during the time of World War II and rumors had spread that Japan might bomb the sacred assembly. Bearing this potential in mind, the British government fortified security arrangements. Trains heading to Allahabad (now Prayagraj) and other modes of transport were thoroughly searched. Both passengers and vehicles were sent back as part of the precautionary measures.

The regional archives office indicated that the British government prohibited Kumbh due to concerns regarding potential Japanese airstrikes on Akbar’s Fort, a military site located along the Yamuna River in the religious fair’s area to prevent mass casualties among the pilgrims. Additionally, they restricted the sale of rail tickets to Allahabad during this time and advised the devotees against congregating in large numbers to mitigate the risk of casualties in the event of a bombing.

They did not allocate any resources for Kumbh to discourage the Hindus, instead redirecting funds towards the ongoing war, which was at its height during that period. However, the absence of any action from Japan, which was ultimately determined to be a false rumour, did not mitigate the impact of the British government’s decision, which barred thousands of devotees from taking a holy dip at the Sangam during the Kumbh.

“Absence of any document regarding preparations, royal bath and expenses in the Regional Archive of Allahabad (earlier Central Archive), Government Archive of Lucknow and even with the urban department supports the view that the then regime refrained from any preparation for Kumbh. Britishers tried every other method to persuade Akharas and pilgrims to keep away from the Kumbh area during the period with the excuse that Japan could invade from the eastern front of the country on any day so there was a sort of war emergency. The British also did not make arrangements and the absence of any document related to Kumbh supports this theory,” Regional archives-officer (RAO) Amit Agnihotri stated. Nevertheless, several sects attended the sacred festival.

However, many historians believe that there was another reason behind the move as the British feared that the massive crowd gathering at the fair could fuel the independence movement. According to the former, freedom fighters assembled during Kumbh. At the time in 1942, the Quit India Movement was at its peak, and a large gathering like the holy Kumbh could become a major concern for the administration. The imperial power was worried that the people present at Kumbh could be inspired to join the freedom struggle.

Thus, the decision had a strong political side. Notwithstanding these apprehensions, the Kumbh of that year was successfully conducted, though with a reduced attendance as only a restricted number of individuals were able to participate.

Restrictions on Kumbh in the 19th century

The First War of Independence in 1857 witnessed several organized uprisings or rebellions in various parts of the then-Allahabad. The Chowk area of the city has been designated and preserved as a historical site, commemorating the location where numerous rebels faced execution. Similarly, the area where the Swarup Rani Nehru Hospital now stands used to be a prison. The area within the contemporary hospital complex that houses the postmortem facility was previously a site where many freedom fighters were hanged, based on accounts.

Hence, in 1857, the British authorities not only bombarded the area where the Kumbh was scheduled to occur but also transformed it into a cantonment, justifying their actions as a means to suppress the freedom movement and prevent the sacred congregation from happening.

According to colonial records, the Prayagwal community (pilgrimage priests) associated with the Kumbh was among those who raised their voices against British rule. They supported and sustained the 1857 rebellion as well as opposed the colonial government and actively campaigned against it, as it supported Christian missionaries and officials who saw them and the devotees as “ignorant co-religionists” and made aggressive efforts to convert Hindu pilgrims to the Christian faith.

The government accused the Prayagwals of inciting unrest in Allahabad and partially provoking the 1857 rebellion. Colonel Neill targeted the Kumbh area, bombarded the site where the Prayagwals resided, and destroyed it. Kama Maclean described as part of the “notoriously brutal pacification of Allahabad” in his book “Pilgrimage and Power: The Kumbh Mela in Allahabad, 1765-1954.” The Prayagwals retaliated by targeting and destroying mission presses and churches in Allahabad.

Before the Kumbh in June 1857, the Mission Compound in Allahabad was set ablaze. At that time, the American Presbyterian Church Mission was also burned down. According to Rev. M.A. Sherring, the author of “The Indian Church During the Great Rebellion,” this act brought missionary activities to a halt. After the British gained control, the Prayagwals endured severe persecution, resulting in the hanging of several individuals. A large portion of the land near the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers was seized and incorporated into the government cantonment.

A missionary named James Owen returned to Allahabad in January 1858. The events he observed have been chronicled in Rev. James Moffat’s publication, “The Story of a Dedicated Life.” James Owen observed that military camps had replaced the tents of the pilgrimage priests near the fort and within the nearby grounds. The city was under rigorous patrol by military and administrative officials and residents were prevented from accessing the area.

Religious customs were preserved through the practice of one or two pilgrimage priests travelling to the Sangam (the confluence of rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati) to gather its sacred water in their vessels. Subsequently, they transported this water to Daraganj, a renowned area inhabited by the Prayagwal. There, the water was released into the Ganges, enabling the local community to conduct their religious bathing rituals with this consecrated water during the Kumbh.

The gatherings of Prayagwals and pilgrims at Kumbh were marked by the waving of flags that referenced the rebellion and racial oppression, in the aftermath of 1857. The British also misreported on the issue. Kama Maclean wrote that the British media depicted these assemblies and subsequent protests at later Kumbhs with feelings of “hostility” and “distrust.”

Kumbh continued to play a significant role in the independence movement until 1947, serving as a venue where locals and politicians gathered in large numbers. The Sanatan Dharma Sabha held a meeting at the Prayag Kumbh Mela in 1906 and under the leadership of Bharat Ratan late Madan Mohan Malaviya, resolved to establish Banaras Hindu University. Kumbhs have also been pivotal centres for the Hindutva movement and its politics. The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) was founded at the Haridwar Kumbh in 1964. This historical event highlighted that cultural and religious festivals like the Kumbh not only have spiritual importance but can also have a profound impact on political and social spheres.

‘Let our govt come, will slit your throat’: Azam, Kais, Akif and others attack Hindu youths with weapons in UP’s Sultanpur

On 10th January, Hindu youngsters were reportedly attacked by members of the Muslim community in Koeripur Nagar Panchayat of Chanda police station in Sultanpur of Uttar Pradesh. A First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged against Mohammad Azam, Sarfaraz, Mohammad Kais, Akif Ahmed, Zaid Rain and other accused based on the complaint of one of the victims, Jatin son of Hari Shyam from Arya Nagar Mohalla.

OpIndia has a copy of the FIR which stated, “On 10th January 2025, at 2:00 pm, Jatin was standing outside his residence when a large group of youths from the Muslim community unexpectedly assembled, approaching from the direction of Goddess Jalpa Temple. They launched an unprovoked attack, resulting in significant injuries to him. Additionally, Mohit Kasera, Sunny Agrahari, Rinku Agrahari, Swayam Agrahari and Shivin Agrahari, all residents of Koeripur who attempted to intervene, also sustained serious wounds.”

It further conveyed, “Mohammad Ibrar, Majid, Mohammad Sahadab, Sahil, Mohammad Azam, Sarfaraz, Mohammad Kais, Akif Ahmed, Zaid Rain, Saddam, Hamid Rain, Abbu Kaleem, Kais Rain, Sufiyan Ansari, Abbu Huraira, Kaif Suhain, Ramzan, Gabbar, Mustafa, Irshad, Aman Javed who also live in the same area along with around 50-80 unidentified people targeted Sunny Agrahari earlier with sticks, swords, iron rods, spears, knives and hockey. They also hurled abuses at him and threatened to murder him. He was attacked twice.”

“The perpetrators threatened that once their government (insinuating Samajwadi Party/I.N.D.I. Alliance) is in power, they will inflict violence upon the other side by slitting their throats and cutting their hair, which will be stored in the mosque,” the complainant informed and requested strict and urgent action in the case. Sections 191(2), 191(3), 352, 351(3) and 115(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) have been invoked against the offenders.

According to media reports, Jatin mentioned that in the past, hundreds of these Muslim youths had unleashed a deadly assault. Chanda Station Officer (SO) Ravindra Singh confirmed that the situation at the scene is presently calm. A complaint has been received from one side, leading to the registration of a case and those who were injured have been sent for medical attention.

Faijan (14), Saqib (14), Kahnur (13), and Adnan (15), who reside in Hazratganj Mohalla ventured into town at 3 pm to purchase shoes and slippers. It was claimed that upon their arrival at the market in Shastri Nagar Mohalla, Vipin ran his motorcycle over Adnan’s foot. When the children protested, he along with his associates Sunny and Pradeep assaulted them. The former subsequently returned home and then went back with ten to twelve other youngsters from the village. A confrontation ensued between the two groups.

Witnesses indicated that the conflict was temporarily resolved through the intervention of local elders. However, around 5:30 pm, 18-20 members of the other side arrived near the mosque and began to assault women and children. This led to a renewed altercation between the two factions, during which sticks were used and bricks and stones were thrown, resulting in injuries to four individuals out of which two are in a critical state.

The two parties engaged in a dispute regarding the collision involving a bike and a large number of people from a particular community reached there in no time, per another report. These people started fighting with weapons and people from the other side also gathered. Meanwhile, the former ambushed them and attacked them with sharp weapons. The individuals injured included Jatin, Mohit Kasera, Shani Agrahari and Vicky Agrahari, all from Arya Nagar. Notably, Jatin and Mohit have incurred injuries to their heads.

China jails Uyghur Muslim woman, her two sons and a neighbour for “illegal underground religious activity” because she was teaching them Quranic verses

0

A 49-year Uyghur Muslim woman in China was reportedly sentenced to 17 years in jail for teaching religious verses to her sons and a neighbour. Her activities of Quranic verses were termed as ‘illegal underground religious activities’ by the Chinese authorities.

The woman named Seylihan Rozi is a resident of Saybagh village in Kashgar’s Konasheher county and will be sent to Xinjiang prison. As per reports, Seylihan Rozi was teaching 10 Quranic verses that Muslims recite while offering namaz. This was considered teaching “illegal religious education” and “illegal underground religious activity” by the authorities.

Rozi’s two sons were also sentenced to 7 and 10 years, respectively, in prison for receiving “illegal religious education” from their mother. Moreover, the neighbour named Yakub Hidayatullah who attended her lessons has also been sentenced to 9 years in prison.

China’s persecution of Uyghurs

For years, Chinese authorities have imposed harsh restrictions on Uyghur Muslims in the north-western region of Xinjiang. More than a million Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities, who are primarily Muslim, have reportedly been interned in camps, according to the UN.

The country is accused of trying to eliminate the Uyghur Muslim culture and forcing the Uyghur people to assimilate in the Han Chinese culture. It has also destroyed mosques and Islamic shrines over years. From banning fasting during Ramzan to learning or teaching religious verses, China has been using all kinds of tactics to eliminate Uyghur Islamic culture.

‘Fatima Sheikh’ is not the only lie, Indian history is filled with many such fiction like Breast tax, Aryan Invasion, Mughals building temple, Amarnath discovery and more

The reform related to the education of women in the state of Maharashtra is historically credited to Savitri Bai Phule who stood alone to fight for the educational rights of women. However, in the past few years, several leftist, activists had begun lauding ‘feminist educator Fatima Sheikh’ and claimed that she was the first Muslim woman teacher who struggled to make the country’s first schools for girls alongside Phule.

In a sensational remark on Thursday, 9th January, author and activist Dilip Mandal revealed that Fatima Sheikh celebrated as India’s first Muslim school teacher, never existed. Mandal claimed that Fatima Sheikh was a fictional character he created and that she was never a real person or historical figure. “Please forgive me. The truth is that Fatima Sheikh never existed; she is not a historical figure. Not a real person. It is my mistake that, during a particular phase, I created this name out of nothing—essentially from thin air. I did that knowingly. You will not find a single entry in a Google search earlier. No article, no book, no mention. Nothing,” he said.

He stated that he created a fictional figure for narrative building and that there was no photograph of her so a fictional sketch was also made. “I know the art of creating narratives, of building images. I have mastered this craft, so it was not difficult for me. A fictional sketch was created because there were no old photographs. I spun many stories about her. And thus, Fatima Sheikh came into being. The story spread. Those who needed this narrative for political and ideological purposes amplified it,” he said.

He also said that the name of Fatima Sheikh is not found in the writings of Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule. Notably, Sheikh has been described as a colleague of social reformers Jyotirao Phule (also known as Jyotiba Phule) and Savitribai Phule in Maharashtra.

Dilip Mandal wrote, “The complete writings of Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule have been published, and nowhere is the name Fatima Sheikh mentioned as someone who taught alongside them. Even Babasaheb Ambedkar never referred to such a name. No biographer of Mahatma Phule or Savitribai Phule has mentioned Fatima Sheikh. No Muslim scholar referenced this name until 15 years ago. British documents that discuss the educational efforts of the Phule couple make no mention of Fatima Sheikh either.” She is nowhere to be found nowhere, he said, adding at the end, “I have mentioned Fatima Sheikh’s name the most. I admit to this. But she never existed”.

Evidence claiming Sheikh’s existence

It is crucial to note that there is a Wikipedia article on Fatima Sheikh, and Google celebrated her 191st birthday on 9th January 2022 with a doodle. The name Fatima was once also mentioned by Savitribai Phule in her letter, but it nowhere mentioned that she was a school teacher or a reformist.

Interestingly, Savitribai’s letter is not the only evidence that claims the existence of Fatima Sheikh. Several Urdu textbooks prepared by Balbharti by the Maharashtra Education Board have mentioned Fatima Shiekh alongside Zakir Hussain and Syed Ahmed Khan. There’s also a separate chapter on her in Andhra Pradesh standard 8 textbooks.

“Fatima was Savitri’s adjutant and took over as headmistress of the school when Savitri was unwell or had to go canvassing for more girls to attend school. Savitri and Fatima met at Mrs Mitchell’s school in Poona where they both took English lessons. Jyotirao Phule and Usman Sheikh went to school together and they both had the same mentor in Pune, Munshi Gafar Baig, an Urdu and Persian scholar,” Reeta Ramamoorthy Gupta who researched on life of Savitribai Phule to write a biography was quoted as saying.

‘Legacy’ of Fatima Sheikh lauded by Islamists, leftists

Several media houses and leftist, Islamist leaders continue to laud Sheikh as India’s first woman Muslim teacher. Aakar Patel, head of Amnesty International India said in the year 2022 that some of the Hindu Nationalist leaders were trying to erase the contributions of the minorities, especially Muslims like Fatima Sheikhh from the Indian history.

“Muslims have been marginalized in ways which only partly include wiping them out of history books. If you look at the political representation of Muslims in India, it is at its lowest point,” he was quoted as saying.

Telangana CM Revantha Reddy also paid rich tributes to Sheikh calling her a ‘social reformer’. He said that Sheikh, an ally of Savitribai Phule, the first Muslim woman teacher remains an inspiration for countless individuals striving for education and equality. He further lauded her so-called efforts for the upliftment of the oppressed and the marginalized communities.

Wikipedia which has a history of spreading propaganda and misinformation has also refused to delete the page on Fatima Sheikh, which probably is a fictitious character as claimed by Mandal. While there was a proposal to delete the page after Dilip Mandal’s revealations, other editors rejected it, and removed mentions of Mandal’s claims from the page.

They refer to a 1991 book as evidence that Fatima Sheikh actually existed. However, the book names a woman named Fatima Sheikh just once and does not mention anything about her being the first Muslim female teacher or that she was an educationist who worked closely with Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule. It just mentions that she was a colleague. A detailed report regarding this can be read here.

Media houses like Shesightmag, and News Laundry also claimed that Sheikh was India’s first Muslim teacher and that Mandal had written a piece for The Print asking why history had forgotten the contributions of Fatima Sheikh. Notably, Fatima Sheikh indeed may have existed and worked in schools set up by Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule, but she was never a teacher or a reformist and Mandal is insistent that she is fictitious.

It is further important to note that Fatima Sheikh is not the only lie that has been propagated by the leftists or activists for narrative in history. The leftist activists have made it a habit to propagate false narratives and portray the minority community as the activist, reformist, or freedom fighter, then be it Tipu Sultan, an Islamic bigot who slaughtered Hindus, or Bahadur Shah Zafar who is revered as India’s ‘great patriotic kings’.

Tipu Sultan ordered the killings of Hindus

Tipu Sultan is often credited in our history textbooks as a ‘secular’ ruler of Mysore who fought against the British in the late 1700s. While the latter part of the sentence does hold merit, the former is nothing but blatant propaganda planted in History textbooks by the Congress party.

Tipu Sultan was one of the most ruthless Islamic invaders in South India. There have been several recorded instances of Tipu’s army forcefully converting, raping, and kidnapping Hindus on his orders. Many temples are recorded to have been demolished under his reign. Historians such as Khan Hussain Ali Kirmani have pointed out that Tipu Sultan had animosity toward the local Hindus and tribals in the area.

It has been recorded that at least 3 temples in South India were demolished by Tipu Sultan’s army, such as Harihareswara temple at Harihar, the Varahaswami temple at Srirangapatnam, and the Odakaraya temple at Hospet. He also forced around 40000 Hindus to convert to Islam. A detailed report regarding this can be read here.

Despite this, several Islamists and left leaders continue to hail Tipu Sultan as a freedom fighter.

Bahadur Shah Zafar and the Left propaganda

In 2020, Sagarika Ghose, a prominent propagandist in the mainstream media glorified Jihadis who had committed unspeakable atrocities against Hindus. According to Sagarika, people such as Siraj-ud-Daulah, Tipu Sultan, and Bahadur Shah Zafar were India’s ‘great patriotic kings’. On one hand, it has been argued that India did not exist before 1947 while on the other hand, Islamic despots are held up as ‘great patriotic kings’. Quite obviously, liberals don’t care about the truth, they only care about the agenda, and their agenda requires the glorification of Islamic despots from time to time.

The truth about Tipu Sultan is noted above. Notably, the tale of Bahadur Shah Zafar is more complicated. The War of 1857 has been established as the ‘First War of Independence’ in the popular imagination but it certainly wasn’t a tale of ‘Hindu-Muslim Unity’ as it is put out to be. It was a diverse set of groups temporarily collaborating to achieve a strategic objective. The Sepoys raising Zafar as the face of the rebellion had more to do with realpolitik than any real devotion towards the man.

Ghose’s version of history is typical of liberals who blame the British for everything that is wrong with Hindu-Muslim relations. In reality, there has never really been any significant period in the last thousand years when Hindu-Muslim relations have been healthy. However, a conscious effort was made to blame the British for all the divisiveness between Hindus and Muslims so that Congress’s secular-liberal worldview could be justified.

Recently, the Delhi HC dismissed a plea filed by a Mughal descendent seeking possession of Red Fort. The petitioner Sultana Begum is the widow of the great-grandson of the last Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar-II. The appeal was filed against a 2021 decision by a single high court judge, which had earlier dismissed her petition. Sultana Begum claimed that the possession of Red Fort was taken away from her forcibly by the British East India Company in 1857. The plea claimed that Begum was the rightful owner of Red Fort, as she inherited the property from her ancestor Bahadur Shah Zafar II.

Not only has history about Muslims been changed, but several instances from the past have been modified to suit the probable narrative being propagated by several communities for their benefit, far from the truth.

Ashoka converted to Buddhism after the Kalinga war

One such crucial incident from history claims that King Ashoka converted to Buddhism in 262 BC after the war of Kalinga. It is claimed that he converted his religion as a result of regrets he felt for the sufferings of the war. However, this narrative is based on very little evidence and is notably fake as the King was in association with the Buddhists from 10 years before the war, and he had converted his religion to Buddhism two years before the war.

The minor rock edicts of Ashoka, the earliest inscriptions of the Emperor, written in the 11th year of his reign state that the King’s conversion to Buddhism predated the war and that he seems to have had links with Buddhists for a decade before his conversion. As per the reports, around 1,00,000 died in the war, around 1,50,000 were taken as captives, and many more died of hunger and injuries.

According to the popular narrative, Ashoka felt horrified by his own brutal acts and converted to Buddhism after the war. However, his own inscriptions, written in the 11th century, display his association with the Buddhists over the past 10 years, which was before the war.

The myth of breast tax

Another imaginative story claims that upper caste Nairs and Nambuthiri Brahmins in Kerala did not allow women from lower castes to cover their breasts and then levied a ‘breast tax’ on them.

According to this legend, the ‘breast tax’ was imposed on women from lower castes in Kerala to prevent them from covering their breasts. It says that lower caste women who covered their breasts were forced to pay a tax, and it depended on the size of the breasts. The folklore goes on to narrate the story of Nangeli, saying that she had cut her breasts and offered them in place of the tax to the king, protesting against the tax. The folklore also talks about the ‘moustache tax’ imposed on lower caste men who wanted to sport moustaches.

The story has been published and propagated by the media several times, making a section of society believe it to be true. However, according to several arguments made by historians, the story of Nangeli is a fiction based on folklore that had no names whatsoever. In 2018, OpIndia published a detailed report on the origin of the story of Naegeli. Recently, our Hindi team did an explanatory video on the matter after Drishti IAS’s UPSC instructor Vikas Divyakriti’s video narrating the story went viral.

While it is true that lower caste people were taxed by the rulers in Kerala, it had nothing to do with breasts or mustaches. As the land tax was low at that time, the kings introduced various kinds of other taxes to collect revenue, and one such tax was separate taxes for men and women. The tax to be paid by men was called talakkaram or head tax, and the tax to be paid by women was called mulakkaram or breast tax, only to differentiate it from the tax for men.

The head tax was also called the moustache tax, in line with how the breast tax was named. The tax had nothing to do with actual breasts and moustaches, it was just the words used to mean men and women. The rate of tax was different for men and women, therefore they were named this way.

Buta Malik discovered Amarnath: Fake

The famous Amarnath Yatra which leads to the cave is of great religious significance to the Hindus. However, according to another Islamist propaganda, it was first supposedly discovered by a Muslim shepherd from Batakot. It is claimed that the shepherd, Buta Malik, stumbled upon the sacred spot after his flock strayed amidst the mountains. Over time, the shrine of Amarnath became a holy pilgrimage that attracts people from all over the country. The folklore is propagated by several media houses and leftists portraying the Hindu-Muslim unity behind the event. However, several historical records show that the shrine was worshipped by Hindus even before it was allegedly discovered first by Malik.

As per the folklore propagated by leftists, the shepherd, a resident of Batakot in the 1850s took shelter in the cave where a Sufi saint gave him a Kangri, a small pot filled with burning coal that is held close to the body to keep it warm. When he went home, he saw that the pot of coal had turned into a pot of gold. Overjoyed, he went back to the cave to thank the saint. But instead, he found only the cave and the Shiva Linga. His descendants then became the custodians of the shrine for a long time. However, now it is looked after by the Amarnath Shrine Board headed by the Governor of the state.

It has been reported earlier that the mention of Amarnath has been found in several scriptures written before 1850s showcasing that the shrine has been worshipped by Hindus for centuries. The pilgrimage to Amarnath caves is an old tradition, and it is mentioned in Kalhana’s Rajtaringini, Nilmat Puran, Ain-e-Akbari, accounts of Francois Bernier, and many more. A detailed report on this can be read here.

The folklore of Buta Malik is being told by his descendants and local Kashmiris, the legend is an amalgamation of Hindu religious traditions and its relation to the local Kashmiri Muslim population. It creates a perfect picture of Hindu-Muslim unity where Kashmiri Muslims are protectors and discoverers of a shrine that Hindus worship. As a local folklore, it is good to have such stories told (like various other folk stories in India). The problem arises when such stories are mainstreamed by eminent historians and celebrated liberals as a historical fact.

Fake claims that Mughals built temples

In 2021, the National Council of Educational Research and Training posted in the school history books that the Mughals destroyed hundreds of Hindu temples, killed lakhs, and offered grants to rebuild the temples. Information in the book ‘Themes of Indian History (Part II)’ for class XII, page 234 of the history textbook, read, “All Mughal emperors gave grants to support the building and maintenance of places of worship. Even when temples were destroyed during the war, grants were later issued for their repair – as we know from the reigns of Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb.”

However, later the NCERT said that it had no sources to claim that the Mughals had rebuilt temples after destroying them or had even issued grants to maintain them. The NCERT has a history of spreading misleading claims and illicit knowledge to youngsters. Earlier it had made misleading claims against the Brahmins, however, the same was later removed.

The Mughals invaded the land of Bharat and destroyed its culture and civilization by attacking Hindu temples in all four directions. They killed Hindus and also converted many to their religion attempting to change the demography of the region. Several historical records show how the Mughals destroyed Somnath temple in the West, Lord Shiva temple in Kashi, and many more in Nashik, Ujjain, Indore, etc. It was the Hindu queen Ahilyabai Holkar who restored the Hindu temples and paid her rich efforts towards protecting and promoting the Hindu Dharma.

Aryan invasion never happened, leftists invented it on their own

The Aryan Invasion Theory, put forward during the colonial period has been propagated by the leftists as the truth. However, it was based on speculative linguistic analysis rather than archaeological or scientific evidence. The theory stated that the Aryans invaded India around 1500 BCE subjugating indigenous people and establishing Vedic culture. However, it was noted that the theory was influenced by Eurocentric colonial perspectives, aimed at justifying British rule, and often misinterpreted Indian texts and culture through a materialistic lens.

Despite discoveries of Indus Valley sites like Rakhigarhi and Lothal, the said theory was probably adopted to fit these findings rather than being questioned. It further evolved into the Aryan Immigration theory. The set colonial narrative then divided Indian society as it portrayed the Aryans as culturally superior to indigenous people, ignoring India’s historical pluralism.

Interestingly, the left-leaning historians continued to uphold and propagate the story, sidelining India’s ancient scientific and cultural contributions. Details regarding the issue can be read here. However, given new archaeological findings and literary evidence, the Aryan Invasion or the Immigration Theory should be discarded in favor of a more nuanced understanding of Indian history, integrating both scientific and textual sources.

Conclusion

The leftists have a history of modifying historical events for favourable benefits and propagating them suppressing the truth. This practice has to date done nothing but malign India’s history and cultural significance on world maps with many still continuing to spread fake information about the glory. This can result in misinterpretation, misunderstanding, prejudice, and poor understanding both at individual and societal levels.

Earlier, a small section of media was operative who was responsibly undertaking tasks to spread correct information and current events to the public after proper verification. But in today’s era, there are plenty of leftist media handles, social media channels, and influencers who possess the ability to reach out to the citizens. Given this, the probability of the spread of misinformation, half-baked information, or fake news at the hands of leftist Islamists has gone on the rise leading to chaos. Amid this, it is now also the reader’s responsibility to analyze and maybe question the source of information for a better understanding of the truth in favor of the country.

While media houses or social media influencers are expected to follow the ethics of verifying and analyzing the facts before making public the details, the readers or the audiences must equally today adopt the practice of critical thinking and verifying questionable claims posted by the leftists. This would help one get closer to the facts, and the truth and be a responsible mind both at individual and societal level.

Rs 2026 crore loss, lapses in policy implementation, kickbacks: Read what CAG report on scrapped Liquor Policy in Delhi says

On 11th January, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) released its report on the Delhi government’s now-repealed excise policy. The CAG revealed that the policy resulted in a staggering Rs 2,026 crore loss to the public exchequer. Furthermore, the report highlighted significant lapses in policy implementation and stated that it was ultimately the taxpayers who paid the price of the mismanagement, while there are also allegations of kickbacks having benefited Aam Aadmi Party leaders.

This is the first time a quantified loss has been attributed to the alleged liquor scam, raising serious questions about AAP’s governance under the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal and the accountability of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party in the national capital. The report could have serious consequences for AAP in the upcoming Assembly Elections in Delhi.

Notably, the report suggested that at the core of the issue is the Group of Ministers (GoM) led by former Delhi minister Manish Sisodia. The CAG stated that the GoM disregarded recommendations from an expert panel. Furthermore, the decision-making process was marred by irregularities, which allowed all entities to bid for licences despite documented complaints and financial weaknesses. For example, a licence was renewed for a firm operating at a loss, which further pointed towards negligence.

Violators of licensing conditions were not penalised, and there was a lack of transparency in pricing decisions, which added to the problem. Cabinet and Lieutenant Governor approvals were bypassed on several key matters, and excise rules, which should have been ratified by the Delhi Assembly, were kept from legislative scrutiny.

The CAG highlighted that the financial breakdown of the mismanagement in the excise policy by the AAP government led to a loss of Rs 2,026 crore, painting a grim picture. The failure of the ruling party to re-tender retail licences surrendered mid-policy resulted in a loss of Rs 890 crore. Adding to the financial misery, the government granted exemptions to zonal licensees, which caused additional revenue depletion of Rs 941 crore. Furthermore, the government waived Rs 144 crore worth of licence fees, which was “justified” under COVID-19 restrictions. This directly contradicted tender provisions that placed all commercial risks on licensees. To add to the woes, the incorrect collection of security deposits led to a Rs 27 crore loss.

The CAG report further criticised the implementation of the excise policy as sub-optimal. It prevented its stated objectives from being achieved. There was a lack of scrutiny over the financial conditions and managerial expertise of the bidders, which led to a weak system. The exclusive arrangements between wholesalers and zonal licensees distorted competition. Key measures like the establishment of quality assurance facilities, including testing labs, were not implemented. Even the equitable distribution of retail vends, a critical policy goal, was left unfulfilled.

BJP and Congress targeted AAP over CAG report

In a post on X, Bharatiya Janata Party president and MP JP Nadda said, “Intoxicated by power, high on misgovernance. ‘AAP’DA model of loot in full display and that too on something like liquor. Just a matter of a few weeks before they are voted out and punished for their misdeeds. CAG Report on ‘Liquorgate’ exposes @ArvindKejriwal and @AamAadmiParty Gov. Intentional ‘Lapses’ in Policy Implementation. Rs 2026 Cr Loss to Exchequer money.”

BJP MP Manoj Tiwari said, “CAG has revealed the whole story of the corruption of AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, who has played the role of a broker by destroying the happiness of Delhi… This is the same CAG report which Arvind Kejriwal used to wave in 2013 to fight against Sheila Dikshit and today the same CAG report has declared Arvind Kejriwal corrupt…”

Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva said, “BJP has been saying this from the first day that the Rs 2026 crore scam was highlighted in the CAG report and it clearly tells that it was deliberately done by Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia. According to the CAG report, it was a well-planned conspiracy… Government rules were disregarded every time… Why is Arvind Kejriwal not tabling the CAG report in the Assembly?…”

Former Union Minister and BJP MP Anurag Thakur on CAG Report on Delhi Liquor Policy said, “The ten findings of the CAG report are very detailed, and I will explain them to you one by one. The first finding is about revenue loss a loss of ₹2026 crore. The second finding is deviation from the objectives of the policy. The third finding is that the expert panel’s recommendations were ignored by the Group of Ministers (GOM)….”

Delhi Congress President Devender Yadav said, “We have been continuously saying that the CAG report should be tabled as soon as possible. I have also received some information from social media, according to which the loss of Rs 2000 crores to the exchequer has been directly caused by this liquor deal. I am also saddened by the fact that during this time there was also a winter session, should this report not have been tabled there? This makes one thing clear. There was some deal behind all this due to which there was a delay in bringing the CAG report. I want to ask what was the deal between AAP and BJP that there was so much delay in presenting the CAG report…”

The CAG report has come at a time when political parties are focused on the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections. The massive revenue loss underlined in the report has highlighted the need for accountability and a thorough investigation into these lapses. There is a need for responsibility to be fixed for the irregularities, as the onus of restoring public trust now lies on those in power.

Delhi Liquor Scam

At the heart of the controversy is the Delhi Excise Policy 2021-2022, which has been explained in 10 simple points.

  • The liquor policy was first proposed in September 2020 but came into effect only in November 2021.
  • It changed the manner in which alcohol was being sold in the National Capital. Introduced private players in the market and marked the exit of government-owned liquor vendors.
  • Delhi was divided into 32 zones and a total of 27 private vendors were to ply in each zone. Every municipal ward had 2-3 liquor vendors operating in the area.
  • Proposals such as home delivery of liquor, allowing liquor vendors to offer unlimited discounts, opening of stores till 3 am were also tabled before the Delhi Cabinet.
  • The drastic policy change resulted in a 27% increase in government revenue to ₹8900 crores. At the same time, it marked the complete exit of the Delhi government from the liquor business.
  • While the objective of Excise Policy 2021-2022 was to end black marketing and the liquor mafia, the Delhi government soon came under fire over allegations of corruption.
  • Chief Secretary of Delhi, Naresh Kumar, found irregularities and procedural lapses in the new liquor policy. Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena ordered a CBI probe on the recommendation of Naresh Kumar.
  • Manish Sisodia waived off ₹144.36 crores on the license fee, to be paid by the private liquor vendors, under the garb of the Coronavirus pandemic. Incurred loss to the Excise Department and benefitted liquor licensees by waiving the import pass fee of ₹50 per beer case.
  • All these changes were made without the final approval of the Lieutenant Governor and thus considered illegal under the Delhi Excise Rules of 2010 and Transaction of Business Rules of 1993.
  • Thus, the Delhi government made a U-turn on its new excise policy in July 2022. A month later, CBI booked Manish Sisodia, ex-Only Much Louder (OML) CEO Vijay Nair and 13 others in an FIR for irregularities in the implementation of the Delhi Excise Policy 2021-2022.
