South Korea: Christian sect with secret religious practises spread coronavirus across the country, criminal charges to be filed against the cult

The investigators in South Korea are planning to criminally charge 12 executives of the controversial Shincheonji Church of Jesus for the rapid spread of COVID-19 in the country, the disease that results from the coronavirus, France 24 reports.

According to the reports, the 80-year-old Lee Man-hee, 80, leader the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, a secretive religious sect often described as a cult, will be charged by South Korean investigators for the propagation of COVID-19 (Coronavirus disease 2019) in South Korea. Eleven other executives of the movement are also in investigators’ sights.

Lee Man-hee, who fancies himself the new “messiah” and the leader of a South Korean sect linked to more than half the country’s 4,000-plus coronavirus cases had also apologized for the spread of the disease.

“I would like to offer my sincere apology to the people on behalf of the members,” said Shincheonji head Lee Man-hee.

The 88-year-old twice got down on his knees to bow before reporters in Gapyeong, his head to the floor. “Although it was not intentional, many people have been infected,” he said. He added, “We put our utmost efforts but were unable to prevent it all. I seek the forgiveness of the people.”

The authorities want to investigate whether due to cult’s unorthodox religious practises and preference for secrecy, it has put lives at risk during the coronavirus outbreak. More than 5,000 people have been infected and at least 28 deaths have happened to date in South Korea, the largest cluster of infections outside of China.

The virus spread in South Korea after a 61-year-old woman who was a member of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus in the city of Taegu was diagnosed with the symptoms. The elderly lady is considered to be at ground zero of the explosion of COVID-19 cases. The Korean health authorities believe one in five of the people infected by the coronavirus can be linked to her.

The woman first went to the hospital on February 7 after a minor traffic accident. During that tests, she complained of a pain in her throat. She then returned to the hospital a few days later for treatment of a persistent fever. The doctors had twice recommended that she submit to coronavirus screening.

However, the woman had refused to take a test both times. Later, her health continued to deteriorate and 10 days later on February 17, doctors examined her more closely and diagnosed a COVID-19 infection.

In the meantime, the patient had managed, twice, to leave the hospital to attend the Sunday gatherings of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus. Each time, she had contact with a thousand fellow faithful.

“Her behaviour is not surprising to people familiar with the church,” said Chung Yun-Seok, a South Korean expert on religious cults. “To them, getting sick is a sin because it prevents them from doing God’s work,” Seok added.

Shincheonji Church of Jesus: A cult of secrecy

The discovery of infection in Taegu and the link made with the Shincheonji Church of Jesus has been a turning point in South Korea’s coronavirus battle. The authorities believe that the very secretive practices of the sect have resulted in members’ keeping their membership secret from their relations, even from their parents.

“To Shincheonji members, their priority is not the safety issue but rather protecting” the church, Ji-il Tark, a Busan Presbyterian University theology professor who studies the group revealed.

Initially, the church executives were accused of a lack of forthrightness, but later, officially, offered assurances that they were cooperating completely. However, they had sent messages to members asking them to lie about their membership in Shincheonji Church if contacted.

The groups religious practises is considered to be the reason for the rapid spread of the virus. The group members meet often in small halls, where they are huddled close together. The members are not allowed to wear any accessories on their faces as such practices are considered insults to God.

In addition to that, participating in weekly meetings is mandatory, even in case of illness. The members of the movement must record every detail during the prayer meeting, allowing executives of the group to monitor devotees’ diligence.

With the church head now apologising for the spread of the virus, there are growing demands seeking a ban on the cult. A petition signed by more than a million people has been presented to the South Korean government requesting the dissolution of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, which counts more than 260,000 members.

Madhya Pradesh: Operation Lotus vs Operation Panja? Congress accuses BJP of poaching its MLAs to topple state government

The Congress party on Tuesday claimed that the BJP took 10 of its MLAs from Madhya Pradesh to a luxury hotel in Gurugram as a part of its conspiracy to topple the government in Madhya Pradesh. As per reports, 6 Congress MLAs, 2 BSP and an independent MLA were allegedly held hostage in the ITC hotel in Haryana.

The high-voltage political drama started late Tuesday night after the former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Digvijaya Singh set the Congress party on its heels when he accused the BJP of trying to overturn the government in Madhya Pradesh. Singh also alleged that a senior leader of the BJP had taken a BSP lawmaker to Delhi in a chartered flight, asserting that “poaching” attempts were being made by the BJP on Congress MLAs in Madhya Pradesh.

Digvijaya Singh accused the BJP of indulging in horsetrading by offering Rs 25-35 crores to the Congress MLAs to switch side. However, he added saying that there is no threat to the Congress government and it is absolutely safe.

As per reports, BSP MLA Rambai was allegedly manhandled when Congress ministers reached the hotel to meet her. “When we got to know about the BJP’s ploy, Jitu Patwari and Jaivardhan Singh went sent there. People with whom our contact was established were ready to come back to us. We were able to get in touch with Bisahulal Singh and Ramabai. Ramabai came back even when BJP tried to stop her,” Digvijaya Singh said.

Earlier, Jitu Patwari flew to Delhi to meet the Congress MLAs allegedly held against their will in an ITC resort in Gurugram. Speaking to news agency PTI, he said, “Senior BJP leaders including former chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, former ministers Narottam Mishra, Bhupendra Singh and Rampal Singh among others who had forcibly taken MLAs to a hotel in Haryana.”

“Shivraj Singh Chauhan is the mastermind behind all this. BJP wants to kill democracy. Is this the kind of politics Modiji talks about? MLAs have been offered Rs 50 to 60 crores to join the BJP. Some MLAs are in Bengaluru, but they are with us,” Patwari told news agency ANI.

Congress leader Digvijaya Singh’s son Jaivardhan Singh stated that Congress was successful in getting six of 10 MLAs out of the hotel and the party was in touch with the rest of the MLAs. 4 MLAs are still in the Gurugram luxury resort but the Congress leaders have claimed that they will soon return back.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath too reassuringly said that things are under control and the MPs will come back.

However, rubbishing the allegations levelled against him, the former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chauhan said that Digvijaya Singh is a blackmailer who tries to keep his relevance by issuing baseless statements.

Regarding the allegations of being the mastermind of this “poaching” attempt, Chauhan said, “The matter is of their party but allegations are being levelled against us. There are so many factions within the Congress party that they are fighting within themselves.”

The ongoing upheaval can be attributed to the fact that the ruling coalition led by the Congress Party in Madhya Pradesh has a tenuous majority of 121 seats in the 230-member Madhya Pradesh Assembly. The BJP, on the other hand, has 107 MLAs. In such a scenario, the Congress MLAs switching sides to the BJP can topple the coalition government in Madhya Pradesh and provide the BJP with the prerequisite numbers to stake a claim at the government.

25 new cases of coronavirus confirmed in India including 16 Italians, India to send laboratory and scientists to Iran: Health Minister

As the Coronavirus outbreak deteriorated across the world with more cases of infections reported in India, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan addressed the press today to talk about the situation and the steps the govt is taking to combat the situation.

The health minister said that there has been a dramatic increase of confirmed positive results for coronavirus in the country, which has gone up to 28. 25 new cases were confirmed last week, after 3 in Kerala who were discharged from hospital after their infection was cured earlier.

Harsh Vardhan informed that on conducting contact tracing of the person tested positive in Delhi two days ago, 6 family members of the man have tested positive for coronavirus. Authorities had tested around 86 persons who had came to contact of that person, and the 6 relatives that have tested positive are from Agra. Now the health authorities are checking every household within 3 km of that house to check if anyone else was infected by that person.

The minister also informed that 14 members of a tourist group from Italy have been found infected with the virus. This group had entered India on 21 February, when persons coming from Italy were not being screened at airports. Earlier one person in the group had tested positive in Jaipur, after which the entire group was kept in isolation in an ITBP camp in Chhawla. Later the wife of the person was found infected. Now, 14 additional members of the group have tested positive. One Indian person, the driver of the group, also has tested positive for coronavirus. Therefore, total 17 persons have been infected in the group, 16 Italians and one Indian. The minister also informed that the Italian group had wanted to return after the first person in the group had tested positive, but Italian authorities had advised them to stay in India.

Apart from this, another case has emerged from Telangana, bringing the new infections to 25.

The minister said that all hospitals in the country have been asked to develop proper isolation facilities, as not only confirmed patients, but even persons suspected of having the virus infection need to be kept in isolation.

The government has now decided to start all passengers of all passengers coming from foreign countries, the minister said. Till now passengers from only 12 selected countries were being screened at the airports, but as the virus has spread to several new countries, now there will be a universal screening of everyone coming from abroad.

Talking about evacuating Indians from Iran, which has seen a sudden rise in the number of infections, Dr. Harsh Vardhan said that India has already sent one scientist to Iran, and more scientists are going there today afternoon along with laboratory equipment. He said that India intends to set up a laboratory in Iran so that Indians can be tested in Iran itself before bringing them to India.

The minister urged the people to avoid large gatherings, as one single infected person can infect the whole group, and also to avoid physical contact with people, like not shaking hands while meeting someone.

Dr. Harsh Vardhan informed that in the first phase 15 laboratories were set up to check for the COVID-19 virus, and now 19 more laboratories are being established. He said that among the new 19, 7-8 have already started functioning yesterday and rest will start functioning today.

The union health minister informed that till yesterday, Indian health authorities have screened about 5,89,000 persons at airports, over 15,000 at minor and major seaports and over 10 lakh persons at the Nepal border.

PM Modi decides not to attend any Holi Milan programme amid coronavirus outbreak as positive cases reach 28

Prime Minister Modi today took to Twitter to announce that he will not be participating in any Holi Milan programme in wake of coronavirus outbreak.

PM Modi said that experts around the world have been advising to reduce mass gatherings to avoid the spread of COVID-19 Novel Coronavirus. This year, Holi, the festival of colours, falls on 9th and 10th March. WHO guideline says that when someone coughs or sneezes they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain the virus. So in a social gathering, one can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus if the person coughing is suffering from the disease.

Earlier on Tuesday, PM Modi urged people of the country not to panic and listed out the self-protective measures to avoid infection of any kind. PM Modi informed the masses through twitter that he had an extensive review regarding preparedness on the COVID-19 novel coronavirus and different ministries and states are working together from screening people in India to providing prompt medical attention in order to expel out the deadly virus.

He also listed out certain measures to ensure self-protection and avoid being hospitalized as the coronavirus is extremely proliferating.

The Union Health Ministry has reported 28 cases of a deadly novel coronavirus in India so far. The government of India is taking major precautionary steps and issued a revised travel advisory for immediate implementation. The e-visas to four countries including China, Iran, the Republic of Korea and Italy have already been canceled and the travelers are already suggested to refrain from traveling in these countries.

Karnataka: Jesus statue and crosses on a hill removed by local authorities after local groups allege encroachment and conversions

On Monday, civic authorities of Devanahalli near Bengaluru removed a statue of Jesus Christ and 14 crosses at a Catholic centre, following allegations of illegal encroachment and religious conversion from Hindu residents of the village, reports Deccan Herald.

According to the reports, the demolition drive came days after Hindu groups and villagers had staged a protest at the place on February 23 against the illegal statue that was allegedly built on government land. The local villagers had also accused that priests at the prayer venue were converting local people.

The church officials claimed that the land measuring 4.20 acres was allotted for the burial place in the village. As there were several burial places already and also the Catholic Christians had sought a land grant from the government, the district administration had passed a resolution allowing the Catholic Christian Association of Devanahalli to utilise the land for the community purpose.

However, the Hindu activists and villagers have alleged the church authorities had obtained the government plot illegally. The villagers claimed that the church had not only encroached the land but had renamed the hill as ‘Mahima betta’.

Following the severe protests, the officials, led by the tahsildar, conducted a meeting and removed the statue of Jesus Christ installed atop the Mahima Betta amidst high security.

“The statue and the cross have been wrapped in a cloth and handed over to the church authorities while the other belongings, like furniture, have been shifted out,” said an official from the local administration.

Meanwhile, Archbishop of the church has released a statement, claiming, “During a meeting with tahsildar, villagers said that the presence of Christians and prayers are of no problem and why should some outsiders come and disturb the harmony of the village. It is unfortunate and regrettable that the police, bowing to the pressure of a few outsiders, have forcibly removed the statue of Jesus. It is a blow to the communal harmony of the people in our villages and also a violation of religious freedom guaranteed to us by the Indian Constitution.”

The controversy comes on the heels of a similar dispute in Karnataka over the issue of construction of a 114-foot statue of Jesus Christ in Kanakapura in the state. Senior Congress leader DK Shivakumar had sponsored the construction of a 114-foot statue of Jesus Christ, however, the project had met with severe protests from the local Hindus as the land had belonged to the government and was illegally granted to Christian communities.

Following the protest, the BJP government had decided to take a relook at the land sanctioned by former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy.

Shekhar Gupta’s ThePrint whitewashes Delhi shooter Shahrukh as ‘TikTok buff, PUBG addict’ who carried pistol ‘to protect his sister’

It was only a matter of time that the media would rush to whitewash Shahrukh, the rioter who wielded gun at policemen and fired 8 rounds from his pistol on February 24 after his arrest yesterday. Shekhar Gupta’s ThePrint has been the first in what we expect many outlets who will go out of their way to humanise him.

The Print describes Delhi riots shooter like he’s a regular teen

ThePrint describes Shahrukh as ‘an aspiring model, TikTok buff, PUBG addict and a hookah smoker’ in its headline. The fact that he fired at police officer and wielded gun on the streets of the Delhi is not his major identifier. ThePrint talks about how Shahrukh aspired to be on the cover page of a fashion magazine before becoming the face of Delhi anti-Hindu riots.

ThePrint says how Shahrukh has revealed to Delhi Police how he took his gun out and shot 8 rounds of bullets ‘in spur of the moment’ when ‘other side’ started pelting stones. As if roaming around with loaded gun, in all possibility obtained illegally, is the most normal thing a person does. ThePrint claims they talked to Shahrukh’s neighbours who claim Shahrukh went to ‘save’ his sister who was sitting at one of the protest sites at Jaffrabad when riots broke out. Quoting one of the unnamed neighbours, ThePrint reasons why Shahrukh was carrying a gun, “He was very angry.”

Shahrukh’s father no school teacher

Amusingly, ThePrint failed to paint a ‘son of a schoolteacher’ picture of Shahrukh because his father has drug peddling and fake currency smuggling cases against him. Shawar Pathan, Shahrukh’s father, has been jailed a few times on charges of drug peddling. Apparently, when Shahrukh fled after his gun-wielding picture went viral on social media, he was sheltered by his father’s friend in Bareilly, who is also a drug peddler.

Shahrukh, the art lover

Shahrukh loved Punjabi songs. A ‘police source’ told ThePrint that Shahrukh’ father was a Sikh who converted to Islam to marry the Muslim woman he fell in love with. Hence, Shahrukh loves Punjabi songs. 33-year-old Shahrukh dropped out of college to pursue a career in modelling. As per ThePrint, Shahrukh got his portfolios made, got into gymming and was just a fun-loving PUBG addict.

ThePrint claims the neighbours claimed that Shahrukh’s mother wanted him to get married and take care of ‘family business’. However, since his father is accused of being a drug peddler and fake currency smuggler, ThePrint hasn’t clarified what ‘family business’ would Shahrukh be taking care of.

Whitewashing a normal occurrence

It is almost like clockwork. The moment a crime is committed, a certain section of the media goes out of its way to humanise the accused. Soon after Shahrukh’s gun-wielding video went viral on social media, some media even reported that Shahrukh ‘appeared’ to be carrying a gun when he was clearly seen firing from one. Soon after the Pulwama terror attack, Hindustan Times tried to whitewash the family of the terrorist, only ended up exposing the family even further. Recently, TheQuint tried to create a sympathy wave for the gruesome Hyderabad gang-rape and murder accused by talking to the family.

Kerala: Flood relief funds transferred to local CPM leader MA Anwar’s account, clerk arrested, 2 absconding

In a scam that has been unearthed in Kerala, it has been found that money for the 2018 flood relief had been diverted into the account of a local CPM leader. As per reports, Ernakulam district collector S Suhas has stated that it was not due to technical errors but a deliberate attempt to siphon off funds meant for flood relief.

It was found that over 10 lakh rupees from the flood relief fund were transferred to the bank account of local CPM leader MA Anwar. Anwar belongs to the Thikkakkara local committee of CPM.

As per the internal inquiry findings, it was noticed that the names of 325 beneficiaries were duplicated for the flood relief money at the collectorate office in March 2019. The additional funds that came to the treasury following the addition of fake names, was allegedly transferred to the account of CPM leader MA Anwar held in the Ayyanad Service Cooperative Bank.

Secretary of the Ayyanad bank AN Rajamma had noticed that over 10.54 lakhs were transferred to Anwar’s account in the same bank in five instalments.

The district collector has now suspended a clerk in the flood relief section named Vishnuprasad after the fraud was unearthed. The collector has stated that they have recredited the 10.54 lakhs from Anwar’s account. He added that as per their information, no similar deals were done elsewhere.

As per the latest report in Matrubhoomi, it has been revealed that the clerk Vishnuprasad and his friend had bought a poultry farm in Pollachi. Vishnuprasad, his friend Mahesh and the CPM leader MA Anwar had allegedly used to the money to settle the dues of the farm. While Vishnuprasad has been arrested, Mahesh and Anwar are still absconding.

Vishnuprasad was arrested by the police on Monday, March 2, and his laptop and hard disk were seized. He was then presented at the Muvattupuzha Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Court, where he was remanded to custody till March 17.

The report submitted by the district crime branch names Vishnuprasad’s associates B Mahesh and AM Anwar as co-accused in the scam.

It is notable here that this is not the first time that flood relief fund misappropriations have been reported in the state. In 2019, Kerala Lokayukta had admitted the complaints against the Vijayan government regarding the alleged misuse of Kerala flood relief funds.

In June 2019, the Kerala government had signed a loan agreement with the World Bank worth over 250 million dollars to reconstruct the state’s infrastructure post the 2018 flood. However, in November that year, state finance minister Thomas Issac had admitted that the money has been used for ‘routine’ expenses like salaries and pension.

As per reports, working on a tip-off, the police carried out raids where one Gayatri Singh Veer, who is believed to be the kingpin of the racket, was arrested. Gayatri claimed to be a doctor. Other than that, three women in their 20s were arrested along with six men who were believed to be ‘customers’.

Watch: “Supreme Court did not save secularism in Ayodhya, so now time has come to hit the streets” Harsh Mander inciting mob violence

Harsh Mander, a controversial left-wing ‘activist’ who is associated with billionaire George Soros, was seen inciting mobs to hit the streets to protests against the country. In what appears like an attempt to create anarchy and violence on the streets of the country, Mander said the time has come to decide our fate on the streets as he indirectly called for the dismantling of public institutions in the country.

An undated video has now gone viral where Mander can be heard saying how there is no scope of secularism in Supreme Court especially after the Ayodhya verdict. Speaking to a gathering in Delhi, the foreign-funded activist was seen inciting mob, calling them to descend on streets to decide for themselves based on the show of the strength. Mander claimed that time has now come for people to hit the streets as both Supreme Court and parliament have failed them.

“From now on, the decision will not come from the Supreme Court or Parliament. We saw what the Supreme Court did in Ayodhya, NRC and Kashmir matters. The SC has failed to honour secularism, equality and humanity. We will try fighting there too, but, the decision will not happen in neither Supreme court nor Parliament, it has to be made at the streets,” said Harsh Mander at Gate no. 7 of Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi.

The George Soros funded former member of Sonia Gandhi’s NAC, Harsh Mander is now indirectly pushing the Muslims to rebel against the institutions of the country, by asking them to show their strength on the streets. In a way, Mander who claims to be a saviour of Constitution asked the crowd to dismantle Parliament and Courts and create anarchy on the streets of the country. Harsh Mander is perhaps hinting at a mob-controlled governance structure where justice is delivered on the streets.

Harsh Mander’s hate speech comes at a time when the Delhi High Court has already issued a notice to the centre in connection seeking an FIR against him and others including rabble-rousers like RJ Sayema, Swara Bhaskar, Amanatullah Khan (AAP Party) for instigating people to indulge in violence during the anti-Hindu riots.

Harsh Mander is also the Chairman of George Soros’s Open Society Foundation’s Human Rights Initiative Advisory Board. Recently, George Soros had vowed to fight PM Modi and nationalists of the country and had committed $1 billion towards fighting nationalism and nationalists.

Ironically, Harsh Mander – a part of the well-funded anti-India industry of George Soros, had himself filed a petition against BJP leader Kapil Mishra claiming that the BJP leader had made hate speech resulting in riots in Delhi. However, the courts not only issued a notice to centre on the matter but also took cognizance of hate-speech made by Mander himself, which according to many was the spark for the anti-Hindu riots in the national capital.

It is important to note that Harsh Mander and his NGO Karwan-e-Mohabbat have been very active since the anti-CAA protests in the Shaheen Bagh. He has been hatching a plot to create anarchy on the streets as he had earlier spoken on the ‘importance of solidarity’ and “how we can practice civil-disobedience in today’s India”.

During the recent spate of violence after the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Act, Harsh Mander with his organization ‘Karwaan-e-Mohabbat’ had published a report on the violence at the Aligarh Muslim University that absolved the students of all sins and peddled numerous lies against the Uttar Pradesh Police. Later, of course, the entire report turned out to be a massive fraud.

Indian Navy may postpone its giant naval exercise ‘Milan’ amid Coronavirus crisis

Indian Navy may postpone its biggest maritime exercise ‘Milan’, in the wake of the rising scare of coronavirus infections outside China, reports Hindustan Times.

The Multi-nation naval exercise was scheduled to be held the Vishakhapatnam coast from March 19 to March 28. Over 40 countries were to be a part of the ‘Milan’ exercise with the Indian Navy except for China.

An official on condition of anonymity, said, “The exercise is being postponed due to the coronavirus scare. The new dates have not been finalized yet.”

The decision of adjourning the exercise was taken by several navies indicating their inability to participate in the exercise because of the novel coronavirus outbreak in different parts of the world.

As per reports, the government has also asked the armed forces to prepare for quarantine facilities over suspected cases in the coming days.

The exercise was earlier planned at Port Blair but was moved to the eastern seaboard this year because of better facilities and scope for bigger drills.

The latest exercise of Milan was being organized in the backdrop of China’s growing naval activity in the Indian Ocean.

The countries to whom invitations were sent include Indonesia, France, Mozambique, Sudan, Israel, Qatar, Thailand, Malaysia, Australia, Somalia, Kenya, Egypt, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Myanmar, New Zealand, the US, Tanzania, Comoros, Maldives, Brunei, Philippines, Japan, the UK, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Mauritius, Cambodia, Singapore, South Korea, South Africa, Kuwait, Iran, Madagascar, Bangladesh, Russia, Djibouti, Eritrea, Bahrain, UAE, and Seychelles.

Some of the participant nations have expressed their inability to partake in the exercise amidst the rising concerns over the novel coronavirus outbreak across the world.
