Jagan govt decisions in Andhra Pradesh are anti-Hindu and freebies encourage conversion to Christianity, report suggests

Experts have expressed their concerns regarding the spree of freebies doled out to the Christian communities by the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led Andhra Pradesh government. The freebies are not only causing a loss of public money, but these appeasement schemes are also aimed at encouraging ordinary Andhra citizens to convert, reports Sunday Guardian. 

According to the report, the rampant conversion drives in the state of Andhra Pradesh has become a serious issue in the state, which may even take a serious violent turn if not prevented. The opposition parties in Andhra Pradesh right-wing activists have been accusing YS Jagan Reddy, a Christian that ever since he became the Chief Minister of Andhra, he has spent huge on the services Christian community, with an eye on encouraging conversion activities.

Reportedly, the Jagan government has hiked the financial assistance, which was being given to Christian pilgrims going to Jerusalem, from Rs 40,000 to Rs 60,000 for those with an annual income up to Rs 3 lakh. The assistance money given to those who are earning over Rs 3 lakh per annum has been increased to Rs 30,000.

Earlier this year in August, Jagan’s government had announced that they would provide an honorarium of Rs 5,000 per month to Christian pastors. The Andhra government is also working to launch housing schemes and financial assistance for the poorer sections of the Christian community. 

The Sunday Guardian quotes Chandra Mohan, a BJP leader from Andhra Pradesh, who alleges that the freebies given by the Jagan government would give rise to conversion activities in Andhra. “Most of the decisions of the Jagan government are proving to be anti-Hindu and his spree of freebies is nothing but promotional programmes for encouraging conversion. If this is not checked soon, the issue may turn the state into clash zones between the majority and minority communities,” Chandra Mohan added.

Meanwhile, Jana Sena Party president Pawan Kalyan had also alleged that baptism has been aggressively carried out in Andhra Pradesh after YS Jaganmohan Reddy became the chief minister. He had alleged that religious conversions are taking place in the vicinity of Jagan’s residence and right in front of prominent Hindu temples such as Kanaka Durga temple in Vijaywada.

Pawan Kalyan had said Jagan is using the ‘Reddy’ caste tag though his family practices Christianity.

As per the 2011 Census, the Christian community in Andhra Pradesh accounts for about 1.4% of the total population, however, the number of followers of the faith is estimated to be higher in the state due to the rising conversion phenomenon.

The Sunday Guardian then quotes Dr Gautam Sen, who taught at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He said, “I am hearing persistent anecdotal evidence of frequent accounts of travellers suggesting conversion of ordinary Andhra citizens to Christianity, despite their Hindu names and no outward signs of their newly acquired Christian faith. My inference is that conversions have occurred on a significant scale in Andhra Pradesh, with the coastal belt now dominated by Christian communities and a majority in some tribes have also converted to this religion.”

Sen added that money and other services offered along with the Jagan government’s intervention in favour of Christians may lead to an increase in number of religious conversions. “Jagan Mohan Reddy has proved to be a stronger evangelist than his father Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy,” he said.

Explaining the consequences of the rising cases of conversion, Sen said that the other important phenomenon that is being ignored by most people is the scale of ‘church planting’, which has been a common historical practice as a prelude to conversion and the assertion of political authority over Christian communities. In countless Andhra Hindu-dominated villages, churches outnumber temples.

Sen further added that once a critical minimum of Christian population presence is reached in states like Andhra Pradesh, the state will act in ways familiar to the Northeast. “Whether a bid will be made for full sovereign status remains a question, but if Tamil Nadu also becomes substantially Christian and the DMK is merely an evangelist front, serious consequences may occur. Also in Telangana, or (even) the number of churches across Bengaluru,” Sen told the Sunday Guardian.

“Conversion is resulting in serious consequences due to leading Andhra families converting to Christianity, including leading filmmakers of the state joining the bandwagon,” Sen said.

While the religious card is doing well for the Jagan Mohan Reddy government, promises of infrastructure development and policies to drive economic growth seem to have taken a backseat. The Andhra government has cancelled many projects during the contract period and this has damaged the confidence of investors.

The chief of Pejavara Matha Sri Sri Vishwesha Teertha Swamiji passed away due to multiple organ failure on Sunday at Udupi. The 88-year-old Sri Sri Vishwesha Teertha Swamiji was the seer of Pejavara Matha, one of the the ‘Ashta’ (Eight) Mathas of Udupi.

Earlier, Swamiji was hospitalised on December 20 after he developed breathing difficulty. He was in the ICU since then. Later, he was shifted to Udupi Sri Krishna Matha from KMC Hospital.

Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, who was touring the coastal region, had rushed to the hospital Saturday. Former Union Minister Uma Bharti arrived at Udupi Sri Krishna Matha early morning today to see Pejavara Matha Seer Vishwesha Teertha Swami. The senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Uma Bharti was a disciple of Vishwesha Teertha Swamiji.

Sri Sri Vishwesha Theertha Swamiji was born on the 27th of April, 1931 as the second child of Sri Narayanacharya and Srimati Kamalamma, a devout couple from Ramakunja. The parents named the child as Venkataramana.

Venkataramana, the then head of the Pejavara Matha, Sri Sri Vishva Manya Teertha Swamiji initiated him as a Sanyasi when he was eight years old. The initiation happened on the 3rd of December 1938 at Chakratheertha, near Hampi. Upon initiation, Venkataramana became Sri Sri Vishwesha Teertha.

For the head of any eight Udupi Mathas, the Paryaya and consequent responsibility to worship Lord Krishna for two years is a crown of honour. Such an auspicious duty was bestowed upon Sri Vishwesha Teertha Swamiji for the first time in the year 1952.

Sri Swamiji’s first Paryaya was unmatched in history for its grandeur in spiritual, social and scholarly activities. It was during this Paryaya that the proud torchbearer of Madhva culture, the Akhila Bharata Madhva Maha Mandali (ABMMM) was founded. The ABMMM held its first conference under the Presidency of His Highness the Maharaja of Mysore.

During Sri Swamiji’s second Paryaya in 1968 A.D, the entire region of Udupi was literally revitalized. During this Paryaya, on the occasion of the regional summit of the Vishva Hindu Parishat, the slogan given by Sri Swamiji – “Hindavaha Sodaraaha Sarve Na Hinduhu Patito Bhaveth” became a mantra for all workers of the Parishat. During his second Paryaya in 1968, he got the Badagumalige in Udupi repaired.

Even during the third Paryaya of Sri Swamiji in the year 1984, lady luck smiled on Udupi. The entire spiritual, cultural and physical landscape of Udupi has undergone a revolutionary transformation during the three Paryayas of Sri Swamiji. In his third tenure as Paryaya Swamiji in 1984, he has got a new hall built at Udupi called Krishna Dhama.

He has completed five Paryayas and only one to complete five Paryayas after Shri Vadiraja Swamiji of Sodhe Matha. He started his fifth Paryaya on January 18, 2016, and completed it on January 18, 2018.

Maharashtra: Cracks in Maha Vikas Aghadi emerge as NCP, Congress upset over Shiv Sena taking credit for farm loan waiver

The NCP and Congress are upset at the Shiv Sena for taking all the credit over the farmer loan waiver announced by the Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra earlier this month. Soon after the announcement, posters came up in Maharashtra’s Aurangabad, Pimpri-Chindwad, Pune and other parts of the state with pictures of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray taking credit for the announcement.

The posters announced that Shiv Sena had implemented the ‘complete farmer loan waiver’ in Maharashtra. However, Shiv Sena’s alliance partners in Maharashtra, Congress and NCP does not seem too thrilled with this development. Congress’ Pune spokesperson Ramesh Iyer said that since it was a collective decision, it would have been more appropriate if the hoardings had credited the alliance instead of the individual party.

NCP MLC Satish Chavan reportedly told news agency PTI that it would have been better if the Shiv Sena had put up pictures of veteran leaders of the other two parties as well. He said that photographs of NCP supremo Sharad Pawar and Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi should have also been there.

Uttar Pradesh: Yogi Adityanath govt to build India’s first transgender university in Kushinagar

The Uttar Pradesh government led by Yogi Adityanath has decided to build India’s first university for the transgender community at Kushinagar district to facilitate the transgender community to study right from class one to PG and even do research and get PhD degree.

Reportedly, the transgender university is being built by the Akhil Bhartiya Kinnar Siksha Seva Trust and will come up in Fazilnagar block of Kushinagar district.

“It is the first of its kind in the country where members of the transgender community will be able to get the education and the process of has already been initiated. From January 15 next year, two children who are brought up by the community members will get admission and from February and March other classes will start,” president of the trust Dr Krishna Mohan Mishra said.

Mishra added, “In the university, the transgender community will be able to study right from class one to PG and even do research and get PhD degree”.

MLA Ganga Singh Kushwaha said members of the community will get the education and will be able to give a new direction to the country. The foundation stone of the school was laid las Sunday in presence of BJP MP Ramapati Ram Tripathi.

The transgender community has welcomed Yogi Adityanath government’s decision and also expressed happiness over the opening of university. Laxmi Narain Tripathi of the Kinnar Akhara welcomed the decision and said that this will help the community members make a life beyond dancing at weddings. Such initiatives help them become self reliant.

“I am happy that we will be educated and get respect in the society. Education has power and I am sure it will not only change our lives but also the lives of others,” said Guddi Kinnar, one of the members of the community.

NDTV journalist defends the shameless heckling of Kerala governor Arif Mohmmad Khan by leftist historian Irfan Habib, calls Khan “opportunistic”

Even as the Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan was today heckled by leftist historian Irfan Habib for quoting Maulana Abul Kalam Azad during an event today, NDTV journalist Gargi Rawat brazened out the heckling of Khan, calling him an opportunistic alliance.


Responding to the shock expressed by another journalist Aditya Raj Kaul on the appalling heckling of the Kerala governor by Habib, Gargi flippantly tweeted, “Lol..Not agreeing with heckling, but you’re calling a former opportunistic politician now Governor Arif Mohammad Khan a scholar and renowned historian Irfan Habib a pseudo-liberal”.

Contrary to the claim of the NDTV journalist, Arif Mohammad Khan can’t be called a opportunistic politician. The former Congress leader had resigned from Rajiv Gandhi government and quit the party as he didn’t agree with the Congress government’s decision to overturn the Supreme Court judgement in the Shah Bano case. Khan is a staunch advocate for reforms within the Muslim community, and a vocal supporter of abolition of Tripple Talaq. Khan was the Minister of State for Home in the Rajiv Gandhi government, and if he was opportunistic, he would not have resigned from such an imporatnt ministry over principles.

And for renowned historian Irfan Habib, he is infamous for weaving lies in the Ram Janambhoomi case. He, along with other leftist historians, had said that there was no mention of the dismantling of the temple before 19th century and Ayodhya is Bhudhist-Jain site. It is alleged that while the Muslim parties were ready for a settlement, Irfan Habib and other hisorians didn’t let that happen.

The far-left historian Irfan Habib had attempted to physically disrupt the Kerala Governor during his inaugural address 80th session of the Indian History Congress, and questioned Khan’s right on quoting Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. Habib said that Khan should not quote Azad and instead should cite Nathuram Godse.

The incident pertains to the inaugural meeting of the 80th session of the Indian History Congress held at Kannur University in Kerala today during which Habib had listed down some of his concerns surrounding the Citizenship Amendment Act. But when the governor tried to address those points during his address, Habib impertinently rose from his seat and tried to physically stop the governor from speaking.

Gargi, known for being a pro-Congress journalist, is a prominent NDTV anchor and married to Yusuf Ahmad Ansari. Ansari is the great-grandson of former Congress President Mukhtar Ahmad Ansari. In 2007, Yusuf Ansari wrote a hagiography of Sonia Gandhi titled ‘Triumph of Will’. He was a member of the department of policy planning and coordination of the All India Congress Committee. Ansari contested 2007 Uttar Pradesh assembly election as Congress candidate. It may be noted that many people wrongly assume former vice president Hamid Ansari to be the grandson of Mukhtar Ahmad Ansari, but actually he is the grandson of the brother of the former Congress president.

The Citizenship Amendment Act, after being passed by Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha has created a massive storm in the country. Islamist mobs, actively supported by Congress and other parties like SP have gone on a rampage in several states, with Uttar Pradesh getting the maximum brunt of it. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was in Uttar Pradesh today in order to meet the family of “anti-CAA activist” who was arrested by UP police. When in UP, she alleged that the UP police roughed her up and manhandled her. However, video evidence proves that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was, as usual, spreading fake news.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had claimed that when she got down from her car, she was stopped by the police on the way to meet Darapuri’s family, and a female police officer manhandled her and pushed her, causing her to fall.

She further said, “What is the reason for stopping us, that too in the middle of the city? This is not an issue of the SPG, but of the Uttar Pradesh Police. There is no point in stopping us. Will you stop (anyone) in the middle of a crossing?” she asked a police official. I was going in a peaceful manner, how was the law-and-order scenario going to deteriorate? I did not tell anyone about this (visit) so that not more than three persons accompany me. They do not have the right to stop me. If they want to arrest me, they should do so.”

The Congress has now released a video trying to prove that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was manhandled by the police. She has claimed that the lady police held her neck and pushed her to the ground. She has also alleged that she was held by her collar. She alleged that this happened twice.


Several people alleged that she was lying. In order to prove that she was not lying, Congress released a video where a woman officer was allegedly seen holding her neck and pushing her to the ground.


Interestingly, however, in the very video released by Congress, one cannot see anybody heckling Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. One can see that a woman officer approached Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and was trying to speak to her.

At no point of time in the video can one see either the lady police officer holding Priyanka Gandhi Vadra by the throat or Priyanka Gandhi Vadra being pushed to the ground and falling as claimed by her.

Despite the video released by Congress itself proving that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra lied blatantly, journalists of different hues have resorted to peddling that lie further instead of asking questions of Congress.


Prashant Kumar is a Congress loyalist who has in the past even hoped for PM Modi to get assassinated. In 2017, Prashant Kumar had posted a controversial tweet in the context of PM Modi appearing on Khadi Village Industries Commission’s (KVIC) calendar and diary. He had alleged that Modi has replaced Gandhi in the merchndise, and had asked how soon a Godse will come.

It is evident that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra lied blatantly and now, Congress has released a video where it is proved that she did in fact lied. However, the Congress loyalists in the media industry are now questioning the UP police instead of questioning Congress and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as to why a politician would lie to malign public servants and law enforcement officers and why her goons heckled a lady police officer.

Journalists call out the bias of Editors Guild as it fumes over a Twitter poll about Rajdeep Sardesai

After the Editors Guild issued a statement condemning a Twitter poll run by BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya, the guild is being slammed by social media users for its selective approach. The Guild had issued the strongly-worded statement after Malviya ran a poll asking whether controversial journalist Rajdeep Sardesai should handle the PR for the terror organisation ISIS.

Now even some journalists have joined the criticism against Editors Guild, accusing it of being biased. Today News18 anchor Amish Devgan posted a tweet saying that the Guild is selectively rising up for journalists. He said that the Editors Guild was silent when he was abused by Congress spokesperson on air. “The Guild must remain consistent,” he added.


In July last year, Amish Devgan was abused by Congress spokesperson Rajiv Tyagi during a live TV debate. After Amish had questioned the selective outrage of mob lynchings by the Congress party, Tyagi had verbally abused him by calling him Dalal and Bhadwa (pimp). Despite Amish Devgan urging him to control his language, the Congress leader had continued his abuses.

Commenting on the tweet of Amish, another journalist, Vikas Bhaduria of ABP News, tweeted that the Editors Guild remains silent other than Guild office-bearer issues. It may be noted that Rajdeep Sardesai is a former president of Editors Guild and an Ex-Officio Member of the Executive Council of the Guild.

Several social media users also reminded the Guild that it was silent when a journalist was heckled and abused by Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s team.


In August this year, ABP Ganga reporter Nitish Pandey was blatantly abused, threatened by Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi’s close aide Sandeep Singh for asking questions to Gandhi. But the Editors Guild didn’t issue any statement at that time condemning the incident.


This is not the first time the Editors Guild has been slammed by journalists for being biased. Earlier this year, Zee News Editor in Chief had said that the Guild is a den of petty media politics, a cosy club of self-serving editors who express selective outrage. He had said that despite writing to the Guild regarding the Zee News being targeted by the Congress party, it did not qualify as a case worthy of their time. He has said that he didn’t get any reply even after sending mails and calling Guild President Shekhar Gupta repeatedly.

The attack by left-liberals on Kerala governor Arif Mohmmad Khan for his support to the Citizenship Amendment Act continues as he was heckled by historian Irfan Habib at an event in Kerala today. The left-leaning historian tried to physically disrupt the speech of the governor, even as people in the audience shouted slogans against the governor.


The incident happened at the inaugural meeting of the 80th session of the Indian History Congress held at Kannur University in Kerala today. According to tweets posted by the official Twitter account of the Kerala governor, Irfan Habib had made some points on the CAA. After that, the governor tried to address those points during his address, but at that time Habib rose from his seat and tried to physically stop the governor from speaking.


Irfan Habib also objected to Arif Mohammad Khan quoting Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, and said that the governor should quote Nathuram Godse instead. To this, the governor replied, “is Maulana Azad your personal property? He is ours.” The historian even pushed the governor’s ADC and security officer, who had tried to prevent him from reaching Khan.

As the governor was being heckled on the stage, people in the audience started shouting slogans against him. Shockingly, the police remained a mute spectator to this hooliganism by the historian, which is also a huge security issue.

“Let these people know they can’t shout me down. If I heard them quietly, they must hear me quietly,” Arif Mohmmad Khan said even as several people from the audience were shouting at him. He added that he has the right to respond to issues raised before him. “You will decide whom should I quote?”, he said responding to demands that he should not quote Azad and should quote Godse.

The governor said that he was duty bound to respond to the points made by his previous speakers and defend and protect the constitution, but trying to disrupt his speech from stage and audience due to intolerance towards different opinion is undemocratic.

Earlier, Kerala Congress revoked the invitation sent to the governor to attend the commemoration of former Kerala CM K Karunakaran, following his support for the CAA.

Soon after the Gandhi scion embarked on his deranged rants against CAA, NPR and NRC without understanding the issue at all, a member of AIPC (All India Professionals Congress, a ‘professional wing of INC), one Andria D’Souza aka ‘Ria Revealed’ made a fool of herself when she spectacularly faltered in answering basic questions on NPR on a Times Now debate.

On Friday, Congress member Andria D’Souza, better known by her moniker Ria D’Souza, who claims to be a political analyst, was left googling to figure out basic questions about the chronology of Aadhaar and NPR.

She claimed NPR was first conducted in 2003, to which the Times Now anchor, Rahul Shivshankar pointed out that it was first conducted in 2010. She couldn’t explain how NPR would disturb minorities and was flabbergasted when asked who came up with Aadhaar.


Her denseness left the fellow panellists as well as the anchor in splits. They were all left to ponder as to who out of the two- Ria D’Souza or Rahul Gandhi is the smarter in the flock of birdbrains.

Fellow panellist Shehzad Poonawalla later tweeted: @ProfCong deliberately sent one bright lady member on @TimesNow to “reveal” that Rahul is the smartest they have!


For the uninitiated, Andria D’Souza, better known as Ria D’Souza, was born and raised in Dubai and was an ‘ace’ commercial art and business management student (as claimed by her in her LinkedIn profile).

Claiming to be a proud Congress member, Andria has said that she stands by Rahul Gandhi’s visions (and most certainly, it reflected in the Times Now debate).

Interestingly, Andria D’Souza has had a flourishing career in the entertainment world before she decided to join the Congress. She was an Indian Emirati actress who has acted in films like ‘Kamasutra 3D’ and ‘For Adults Only’ as well as Pakistani serial ‘Maati’. She has also anchored shows for Zee Connect. Currently, Andria is a social media ‘activist’ and an active All India Professional Congress member.

The All India Professionals Congress is a professional wing of Indian National Congress chaired by another established Congress bigwig, Shashi Tharoor. Tharoor also has an equally intriguing past. The former Union minister who has been charged under Sections 498-A (husband or his relative subjecting a woman to cruelty) and 306 (abetment of suicide) of the IPC but has evaded arrested in the case so far, has often been critical of Modi government.

The ‘Professional Congress’ (yes, paradoxes exist) member, Andria D’Souza, had once found herself in a rather embarrassing situation after it was revealed that she charges Rs 500 for tweeting promotional tweets.

It all started when BJP Delhi spokesperson Tajinder Bagga tweeted in September that the Flipkart Big Billion Sale promotion tweet which Andria had posted was a paid one and that too she was given Rs 500 for the same. The screenshot he shared showed a conversation between two people where a deal was carried out that ‘@riarevealed’ will post a paid tweet for Flipkart for Rs 500. When Andria tweeted the Flipkart Big Billion Sale tweet as mentioned in the conversation, Bagga shared the conversation and added how it is actually his birthday and not Flipkart foundation date as she mentioned in her tweet.

The ‘Kamasurta 3D’ actress then deleted her tweet and had a complete mental breakdown. At first, after deleting her tweet, she posted another tweet with changed date, pretending as if she just made a mistake.

Except, she goofed up here as well because Flipkart Big Billion Day sale for 2019 is between 29th September to 4th October and not between 10th – 14th October as the ‘Adults Only’ star tweeted. The above dates are from 2018.

This is where her meltdown started. When people started mocking how her tweets are up for sale, which could cast aspersions on her genuine support to Congress, she first came up with an excuse that she tweeted it as she wanted a ‘referral code’ for discount. Soon she started indulging in character assassination of Bagga and filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri who had mocked her for making ‘millions’ by trolling him.

A day later, Andria went on to claim how Tajinder Bagga ‘honey trapped’ her ‘manager’ who posted the tweet for Rs 500 ‘without her knowledge’.

According to the Oxford Dictionary, honey trapping is “a stratagem in which an attractive person entices another person into revealing information or doing something unwise.” With this, Ria also revealed (pun intended) her low IQ.

However, Andria’s hard work to quick fame does not end at this. Almost coming across as a threat to Rahul Gandhi’s ‘wisdom’, the Congress’ ‘enlightened’ member had once blamed Prime Minister Modi for an incident of violence that took place in Pakistan.

Andria had quoted a tweet by Pakistani journalist Naila Inayat which reported communal tension in Pakistani town Phuladiyoon where a Hindu doctor was booked over alleged blasphemy charges. The Hindu doctor was accused of burning the Quran.

Ria, however, thought that Prime Minister Modi should be held accountable for this incident in Pakistan. Ria lashed out on PM Modi for the violence in Pakistan and wondered if this was the ‘sabka saath sabka vikas’ he had promised. She even wished the India which voted for Modi ‘good luck’. Again, the incident Ria is holding PM Modi accountable for did not really happen in India.

Moving on, the Kamasutra actress had shot to quick fame after she filed an FIR against Salman Khan’ clothing brand Being Human CEO, alleging that how he abused her physically in November 2017 and attacked her, which led to sensorineural hearing loss in the right ear. Interestingly, in the case, a B Summary report was filed closing the report because the complaint was proved to have no merit. Ria had filed a protest petition against the dismissal of the case. The court had rejected the protest petition as well.

Now, going back to the debate on Times now, Andria D’Souza later took to Twitter claiming that she was being bullied on the show.

Should Rajdeep Sardesai handle PR for ISIS: Here is how Editors Guild fuming over a Twitter poll only exposes its hypocrisy

The Editors Guild of India today issued a statement condemning the Twitter poll ran by BJP IT cell head, Amit Malviya in which he had asked his followers to vote on whether controversial journalist Rajdeep Sardesai should handle the PR for the terror organisation Islamic State.


Calling it as “McCarthyist social media poll” on Rajdeep Sardesai, the Editors Guild of India termed the poll as “tasteless and deplorable” and lashed out at Malviya for casting aspersions on the integrity and patriotism of Rajdeep Sardesai, who had also served as the President of the Editors Guild of India in the past.

The Guild also called into question “the BJP’s commitment to a healthy debate and dissent without allowing disagreement to degenerate into abuse. It asked Mr Malviya to urgently withdraw the Twitter poll while asking the BJP to “caution him strongly”.

Amit Malviya had yesterday floated a benign Twitter poll, seeking answers from his Twitter followers on whether controversial journalist Rajdeep Sardesai should preside over the PR for the dreaded terror outfit ISIS. He had given four options for the Twitter users to vote- agree, strongly agree, disagree and he is irrelevant.


On Saturday, when the poll ended, about 33 per cent voted ‘disagree’ while 26 per cent and 28 per cent of the people voted for ‘agree’ and ‘strongly agree’ respectively. 13 per cent of the users voted for ‘he is irrelevant’. The poll saw participation from 144,287 Twitter users.

Just a day before, Rajdeep Sardesai had indeed behaved like the mouthpiece of radical Islamists when he had termed the anti-CAA riots as peaceful and patriotic even as Islamist mobs were rioting, indulging in violence, pelting stones and breaking temples.

While a harmless Twitter poll should not have warranted a response from the Editors Guild of India, but nonetheless, the Guild not only issued a strongly-worded letter of condemnation but it also asked the BJP to “strongly caution” Malviya to remove the poll.

As a citizen of India and an ordinary Twitter user, Malviya is well-within his rights to run a Twitter poll no matter how unpleasant or disagreeable it is for certain sections of the society. Instead of reprimanding and moral policing Malviya, the Editors Guild of India should have exhibited tolerance towards his right to Freedom of Expression.

The response from the Guild, in this case, is in sharp contradiction to its reticence to call out journalists like Ravish Kumar for their contemptuous remarks against fellow journalists. While Amit Malviya’s Twitter poll allegedly slandering Rajdeep Sardesai is denounced, the Editors Guild of India gives a free pass to the repeated derogatory jibes of “Godi Media” made by Ravish Kumar against journalists who do not conform with his worldview. The Editors Guild of India has so far not issued a single statement decrying Ravish Kumar for his snide remarks against other fellow journalists from the same fraternity.

Similarly, the Guild displayed remarkable alacrity in pulling up Malviya for allegedly tarnishing Rajdeep Sardesai but the comparable standard of rejoinder is not employed against Rajdeep for besmirching other journalists who dare question him on his beliefs.

Besides, the Editors Guild of India is notoriously infamous for exercising discretion in weighing in their opinions on contemporary issues. The Editors Guild of India had maintained a stoic silence over the pervasive violence during the fourth phase of the Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal. The vehicle of a Union Minister was vandalized, journalists were attacked, people clashed with the central forces that were deployed but these incidents did not wake up the Editors Guild of India from its blissful slumber.

Usually gratuitous in slamming the government against perceived inequities, the Editors Guild of India remained conspicuously silent when bouncers were sent to the Kapil Sibal’s Tiranga TV office for allegedly rooting out the sacked journalists from their premises. It also turned a blind eye to the abrupt lay-offs of the scribes without providing them with advance notice or a severance pay-off.

In fact, when a journalist was arrested in Karnataka during the Congress-JDS rule, the Editors Guild maintained stoic silence. Till date, that draconian move has not been condemned by the Guild. Further, they were more upset about a anti-Hindu fake news peddler being arrested than a DD journalist being murdered by Naxals.

The partisanship of the Editors Guild of India is evident when it goes hammer and tongs against an Individual for floating a harmless Twitter poll while keeping mum on serious offences like physical attacks against journalists and state-sponsored violence.

Moreover, one can also judge the credibility of the Editors Guild of India when its President, Shekhar Gupta, himself peddles lies and provides a platform for others- The Print, to lie promiscuously.
