‘Rashomon’, ‘Rightwing’, ‘Confusion’: Latest defence mounted by comedian accused of sexual harassment

The stand-up comedy scene in India has been taken by storm after allegations surfaced against multiple people of either harassing women sexually themselves or having knowledge of it and yet doing nothing to prevent it. After Utsav Chakraborty was outed, it was revealed that many many people who claim to be Feminists on social media chose to do nothing about it.

The revelations have come as a huge embarrassment for the stand-up comedy scene and many have issued an apology for their appalling conduct. However, Utsav, the man with whom the whole thing started, appears to hold his circumstances and others responsible for his own misconduct.

In a recent interview with Zoom TV, Utsav attempted to whitewash his inappropriate behaviour again by highlighting his mental health issues without offering any meaningful apology and then blamed the ‘rightwing’ for his current predicament. Utsav also appeared to downplay the allegations against him by asserting that it was only ‘online behaviour’.

Interestingly, ZoomTV has deleted the conversation which was uploaded earlier.

Utsav said, “A lot of it has been galvanized by rightwing Twitter accounts. Please check their Twitter accounts, their Twitter headers, whatever, a lot of it.” He maintained that what happened with Mahima was a ‘genuine misunderstanding’. During the interview, Utsav brought up the movie ‘Rashomon’ to assert that it’s a matter of ‘perspective’ and vehemently denied a particular allegation involving a 17-year-old. He said that he was ‘confused’ and is ‘forgetful’ and attempted to use it as an excuse for his conduct. In line with his thread on Twitter the other day after the allegations surfaced, he continued to portray himself as a victim despite admitting to harassing women sexually.

It is quite unnerving that Male Feminists view allegations of sexual harassment as a matter of ‘perspective’. Utsav kept harping about ‘context’ but there are clear red lines that must not be crossed. Judging strictly from the allegations made by the women and the responses to them by his colleagues and other members from the stand-up fraternity, it appears that multiple red lines were crossed and everyone knew about it. There’s no amount of context that could explain away sexual harassment, mental health is a very pathetic excuse. It is a stern condemnation of the ‘woke millennial male feminists’ that they perceive even sexual harassment as a matter of perspective.

Utsav appears to be incapable of owning up to his own actions and taking responsibility. First, he blamed his mental health for his conduct and now blames the rightwing for his misery. Only male feminists can blame others for their own conduct when they are called out for harassing women sexually. It’s utterly ridiculous. The AIB themselves admitted to knowing about his misconduct and apologized for letting their employees down by not taking any action right then. Is AIB now ‘rightwing’? Certain people had objected to OpIndia.com calling out the Left ecosystem which covers up for sexual predators in their midst accusing us here of politicizing a women’s issue. And here we have Utsav himself who is blaming the rightwing for the current mess he finds himself in.

Feminists are also blaming ‘Patriarchy’ for the current series of allegations that have been made. Woke Millennial Male Feminists sexually harass female feminists and other feminists choose to blame Patriarchy for it. This is patently absurd. It’s not much different from Utsav blaming the rightwing for his misery. It appears ‘Patriarchy’ and ‘rightwing’ have become convenient punching bags for the Left to avoid introspection of their own conduct and beliefs.

Nothing appears to indicate that Utsav truly comprehends the gravity of the allegations against him or genuinely regrets his own actions. He regrets being in the current situation, sure, but he appears to be blaming his circumstances and politics for his own abominable behaviour towards women. As things stand as of now, he appears to be of the mind that a giant conspiracy has been hatched to ruin his reputation.
